Cases that redirect sound from rear speaker. - Galaxy Note II Accessories

Does this exist? I hate trying to watch a quick YT vid and it sounds so far away and then it sounds great if I cup my hand around the back of the phone.

That is what you're supposed to do.
Sent from my GT-N7100

Why exactly am I supposed to do that?

All case like that is not practical. And if you can use a smart phone you can cup your hand to help the sound. I wish OEM's would make dual speakers on the front side. One on top and bottom and make it where you can use phone right side up or upside down. Would solve a lot of problems including the one you think you have.
Sent from my GT-N7100

Well not all cases would need to be like that, just a niche product (like those iPhone cases that amplify the sound from the speaker by virtually cupping it through the use of some space at the bottom of the case. The main concern would probably be the thickness of such a case as it needs to redirect the sound from the rear to the sides of the case (in landscape mode).
Samsung missed an opportunity there by not providing stereo speakers on the unit. That would have been awesome.

I dont think it would have to even be that thick to do a good job of directing the sound. Im sure we could get away thinner then a defender case.

The shape affects how sound travels. Having a non concave shape funneling sound would just muffle your speakers.
Just use your hands...better yet, headphones.

If the OP wanted the case to redirect the sound, the more appropriate suggestion would be to use an external speaker (wired or not).

or dual speakers,i had a motorola q9h, that thing was plenty loud..but yeah buds work better

I have an external speaker, and a bluetooth headset capable of music. The point of this was to be instantly available.

Dual speakers on front that are plenty and have a smart flip feature so you can just grab it and talk. And the noise canceling the mics doing the same would be the bomb. A phone that you couldn't hold wrong and in your face stereo.

except the problem with that is the bottom speaker would be right next to the voice microphone, which would make loud speaker cause an echo.
having the speaker on the bottom rear is already close enough to cause echo problems when i use the loud speaker during a call... and noise cancellation doesnt help much due to the differing distances between the speaker and each microphone so it doesnt cancel out perfectly, i can still hear echos.
main reason why most manufacturers dont bother with dual speakers on the rear is because the speakers are too close so you end up with near field interference.

You misunderstood. Dual speakers on the front. One top. One bottom. And use gyroscope and/or accelerometer to smartly use the correct microphone for voice and the other for cancelation. And the same for which speaker needs to be the earpiece in a call and which needs to be deactivated. For games and media both speakers on. For loudspeaker calls, and option to preset which needs to be speaker and a toggle to switch during call if necessary and/or turn off toggle altogether in options. Also makes it easier for us gsm users to use data while using loudspeaker in a call. I am sure the engineering behind it would not be too hard considering all the other more advanced features in a phone. These 5"+ can easily accommodate quality speakers for this purpose. Why it hasn't been done already I don't know. Maybe I should patent it and force the oem who comes out with it first to hook me up with a phone to license it. . If it is apple, I would want time cook to smash an iphone in public and ask for a nexus replacement for right to license.

Ive thought about getting one of these and trying to modifiy it to my needs. I know my local walmart sells them for $4. I havent looked online though.

I found this
A company called element case has these cases.
http://www.elementcase.com/Atom-S4-Samsung-Galaxy-S4-Case-p/sms4-1010-xxfx.htm
They also claim to have a patent on it so it may be hard to find another company with the same idea, really hope they start to support more devices with it.

Mahahahhahahaha! Looks like an old timey record player! That's just ridiculous! Just use headphones if sound is that huge of a complaint. I do like the idea of stereo speakers like the htc one. It's stupid and cheap of the manufacturers not to use them...

don't listen to these people
I've been on the same quest looking for this type of case, to no avail. I had something similar from Element cases for my S4, loved it, sounded great, but unfortunately, I'm not seeing anything for the Note 4. I bought my Note 4 in October, and still nothing. I agree, it's a HUGE market these case companies are missing out on. Wish I had access to a 3D printer, I'd start making them myself and make a killing.

[Q] Any recommendations for a pair of wired earphones with mic and controls?

I've lost the ones that came with it, and though they may show up, I wasn't that happy with them. I plug in my JBLs that I used with my Zune and they sound so much better, but they've no microphone so I can't use them to answer calls.
A search of amazon hasn't really helped since everything is for the iphone or android and no guarantee they will work with the Focus.
I'd like to get a good set of these too. Something for both music and answering a quick call without having to change to my bluetooth headset.
Well the ibeats work well and sound nice, But what I usually use are sets of headphones made for the psp go by sony. No volume control, but it has a mute switch and I can tell you from experience that the mike works. Also, sincethey all use just a standrard 3.5mm triplex jack you can get any brand you want as long as it is not for nokia. They wire the mike and headphones backwards. Heck you could even use skull candy if you are real tacky like that. I am sometimes, in a pinch.

Love the Skullcandy. Have a set of Aviators though and mic is not functional on the Samsung although the headset works fine on a iPod touch. Can anyone else confirm that the pinout is standard on the Samsung Focus?
Skullcandy
I have a pair of 50/50 Skull Candy headphones myself and can confirm the mic nor the volume up and down buttons function on the Focus. Comparing the jack to the one on the headphones that came with the phone there seems to be small but visible size differences in the separation rings.
Skullcandy is cheap and stylish, but if you get a pair make sure you are DELICATE with them! I cannot tell you how many headphones I've bought from them that suffer from the 'dead ear' issue only after a couple of weeks. So make sure that whenever you use them or put them in your pockets that there isn't too much pressure around the jack area.
Do any of the Galaxy S headsets work with the Focus? My dog ate my pair and there is no replacment parts listed at samsungparts.com.
No headphones available for something that was built to listen to music and talk is kind of a big deal.
I bought skull candy full metal jackets off Amazon...

This model has an exact fit 3.5mm jack that fits exactly like Samsung stock headset. Sound quality is superb. If you like bass, these are awesome. You can start and stop music, and answer and end calls from mic. The nylon covered cord is kind of kinky... still getting used to it. Very comfortable in ears and they stay put. Overall, very happy and would buy again. I don't know about durability yet.
Smuook, does the mic work on the skull candy.
Yes, mic seems to work well so far. I've asked a few people and they say they hear me perfectly (depending on call quality obviously). It also works for voice search. You cant initiate a search with mic button, but you can capture your voice with mic. One other thing about cord, it is covered in a nylon jacket. The reason for this is that is that it makes it tangle free and won't end up in knots.
I have some Westone W3's which a Sony Bluetooth Dongle. I find the sound quality is better over Bluetooth (yes believe it or not.)

I've seen different colors... and the black ones with different model numbers. I don't know what the differences are, if there is any. One more "by the way", the FMJs will forward music on double click and backup on triple click. The only thing they don't do is volume, but phone has buttons on side for that so not a big deal.

$185 for a pair of earbuds. Wow. I'll stick with the Skullcandy FMJ's (which are working great for me).
They will cost about 120, as soon as they are available. And I have to tell you: Westones are worth it!

I will take a few in a moment and add to the album. It was too dark when I mounted it last night. I do appreciate the auto brightness on the Tab, makes for an easy transition when driving during the day and night.

Thanks for the photo's.
It looks like it won't work for me and i think alot of others, you can't mount it for example coming up the side of a center console, judging by the shape of the arm? am i wrong has to be on a horizontal surface or windshield.

As described on their website, the headphone jack is accessible when the Tab is mounted. No audio out built into the mount.
The Tab stays clipped in at each corner. The mount grabs each corner. To insert or remove, you peel back each edge.

The design is a bit restrictive. Currently the arm is best suited for a windshield or dash via the adhesive base plate.
I plan on taking the mounting plate and fabbing my own bracket that will put the Tab in front of the stock head unit. It will have a slide mechanism so that the head unit can still be accessed if necessary.

For your information:
The german version comes without the base plate (got.mine today).
In Norway it comes without baseplate and without audio output !
It won't reach for a good position in my Range Rover with the stupid suction cup so I will have to fabricate some bracket for it instead.
The worst was it came without audio output.
I got both the car holder and HDMI desktop stand today and have ripped both apart.
Hopefully I will have time tomorrow to make some schematics of both.
And come up with a good solution so we can get audio output from the car holder as well.
Hmm, $70, it's a pricey wee beast. Looks like a good quality unit though. What're your overall thoughts of it?
The specs doesn't say anything about coming with an audio output, just that the standard 3.5mm connector is still accessible, are people expecting something more than this? (Bluetooth audio ala the Nexus car dock - which apparently doesn't work very well).

In my mind its too expensive just form a bunch of plastic.
Tought there would be an audio output via properitary connection so you are able to hide the cable and dont have to put on x connections to your tab with the looking of a cheap navi.
Really disappointed with this. The mount is by the way for the prototype SGT with a build in stylus on the right upper corner. They just dont change the layout, in my eyes needless ports that dont belong to such an expensive device. Other brands did a better job. Such as zenus with the leather case, the samsung original is bad build.
Yes, its really overpriced, even if you notice the quality of the mount. I didnt wanna wait for womething cheaper and didnt find any simple and cheap solution for this. And there seems to be noone selling a cable with two "angled" plugs in germany... Because the arm of the mount is very short, i have to use it in landscape-mode (makes no sense for navigation for example). Audio-out via proprietary port would make it perfect, as was mentioned above.
Anyways, in-car use of the tab as a navi and music player is really great. I synchronize my music from my desktop to my tab (fortunately i dont need any software for this), using mortplayer as player in the car. Works great, carmode automatcally deactivates suspension-mode with power plugged in.

DIY Custom Speaker Replacement [Pics]

EDIT: After a few days of comparing sound quality with a working Nexus 7, I decided I could do better than the Eee PC speakers. I have another set of better speakers I ordered directly from a components distributor on the way, and I'll post an update when they come in. Link
I'm another unlucky Nexus 7 owner to have their speakers blow out through normal usage. Unfortunately none of the temporary fixes seemed to work, and it's entirely possible that I made my speakers worse through trying them. I had crackling on both speakers, and at any volume. So, I submitted a RMA to Asus about two weeks ago and never received a response.
Then I got the bright idea of removing the speakers altogether to see if I could shoehorn together a custom solution. I'm documenting my findings here in case any of you want to give it a shot yourself and don't particularly care about voided warranties. Yes, you are voiding your warranty simply by taking apart your device. And no, I don't think you should try this if you're afraid of soldering irons. For those of you that are comfortable handling burning hot metal rods, this should otherwise be a pretty simple process. I've burned myself countless times, and even I was able to complete this mod in about 45 minutes.
The first step is that you need to buy a set of small laptop speakers, preferably something that has been gutted from a netbook. Speakers come in all shapes and sizes, so ideally you want something as small as possible and doesn't require much power. Impedance and resistance values are negligible, since the worst thing that could happen when you plug in slightly larger speakers with different values is that your device isn't as loud as before. Once I was ready, I went on eBay and started looking at Asus Eee PC speakers, since I thought the odds are good that Asus re-uses a lot of connectors and speaker sizes in their devices (later I found out this was not entirely true). I also did some Googling just to get an idea of what kind of sound quality I could expect from Eee speakers, and most people seemed to think they were okay. I ended up with some speakers from an Eee PC 1005HAB.

Big thanks to Lokheed for this steal at just over $5 with free shipping. That's half the cost to ship the entire Nexus 7 back to Asus for repair.
The connector looked similar enough to the original for the Nexus 7 speakers that I thought maybe I could get away with doing zero soldering, but unfortunately when they got here the connector was easily twice the size. The other problems were that the pin layout on the connector was different (Vcc, Gnd, Vcc, Gnd versus the Nexus 7's Vcc, Gnd, Gnd, Vcc), and the solder joints for the speakers were hidden inside of the plastic casing. The speakers were much bigger overall, too, which meant things were going to get tricky for ensuring there was enough clearance to actually install them.
This is the point where I realized I had taken a gamble and was on the verge of losing, though luckily it was only a $5 gamble. I immediately set to work on trying to pry apart the plastic housing to remove as much extra plastic as I could. The housing itself was held together with some epoxy, so I had to run a blade through it before prying. Then to get it started, I used a pair of pliers as a makeshift nutcracker to crack one side open so I could fit a spudger in to start prying it apart.
The empty shells from the backs of the speakers. I have no idea why one of them seemed to be more difficult than the other. Luckily without the plastic housing, the speakers ended up being just barely thin enough to still fit. I took some tin snips to the edges and trimmed off as much as I could without breaking the frame on the membranes, then I just stripped the original speaker connector wires and soldered directly to the speakers.
When soldering, just de-solder the old wires from the speakers first and take note of the black vs red/white wires. The 7's speaker wires use red for Vcc and brown for Gnd, so solder the brown wire to where the black wire was, and the red wire to the other one. Simple!
Finally, I powered on my device and ran through a few Youtube videos to test that the speakers worked. Success!
After that I just secured them in place with a dab of hot glue and sealed everything back up. I will say that the speakers are definitely not as loud as the originals, which is to be expected since they're bigger and the Eee PC obviously has more juice to drive the speakers. However, they are a bit clearer than the originals, and it's much better than waiting around for Asus to put another set of speakers in that will probably blow out after a month again. Later on I might consider buying a few extra sets of original speakers in case I get tired of the low volume, but for right now I'm satisfied.
Would using Volume+ with these speakers increase the volume but keep good quality?

I couldn't seem to get Volume+ to work with the stock ROM. That said, it could also be a problem with sound reflection, since I tried flipping it over and it's definitely really loud on the other side.
I also put my girlfriend's 7 next to mine for comparison, and I'm starting to notice that the sound quality isn't actually as good. I've got another set of speakers on order from Mouser Electronics, which should be a lot nicer. I'll post my results when they come in.

First, I agree. But not only BEHIND a device, I'm also irritated by the fact it's off-centered. Watching movie in landscape makes the sound came only from the right or left side...... make it stereo and put speakers on BOTH side!
Secondly, your $190 tablet has Jelly Bean???? Where can I buy it? lol
Asus tried facing the speakers out the front with the TF101. The speakers were behind the screen and made the screen vibrate to make the sound seem like it was coming out the front. It was an interesting concept, but overall sounded kind of muffled because they were still pretty crappy speakers to begin with. I do like that the Yuandao N101 has small cutouts in the glass on the front, but in turn that makes the screen less durable.
It would make more sense to just manufacture a smaller piece of glass and have the entire bezel made of plastic or aluminum, much like how 99% of portable devices before the iPad were made (GameBoy, DS, PSP, etc.). But instead most companies and consumers are obsessed with the design of the iPad, and so all the competitors work on ways to replicate that instead.
If cost were not a problem, we'd be using electrostatic speakers that are integrated into the screen, thereby keeping the iPad-like glass panel and getting exceptional sound quality at the same time. However, nobody wants to spend $1000 on a tablet yet, so we're stuck with $2 integrated plastic speakers that blow out after a week.
So Asus wanted to charge you to ship the device back even though its a manufacturer defect

Mine blew yesterday. A quick search will lead u to a site where they sell OEM n7 speaker assemblies for around 25$. Just ordered one today plan to crack my n7 open takin out three screws and doing it my damn self. Not waiting on Asus or google for repairs or replacement. Plus I don't wanna deal with having to unroot pay shipping wait without a device, finally get it back, re root it and set it up again how I want it. In two day when parts arrive 5 mins later ill have working speakers. Then I plan to get external speakers to avoid this in the future. Hopefully someone will find some decent replacement speakers that will fit and not blow out on normal volume settings

There's at least once place selling it, they look to be around $30. Problem is since it's not "user replicable" I doubt Asus would sell direct even if they had it as a billable part number.

There's at least once place selling it, they look to be around $30. Problem is since it's not "user replicable" I doubt Asus would sell direct even if they had it as a billable part number.

Left one seems to be the only one that blows. Mine went while using MX and 200% boost. Just received a replacement N7 from google...
Saw a vid on youtube with a fix.....
Personally I snipped a piece (1/4x1/4x1/4 roughly) from a mattress pad and placed it over the offending speaker.
I love how this guy is a "technician" yet he's:
Confusing flathead and philips
Using a flathead to open a plastic back case
Suggesting glueing connector half-way in place as a fix
Sliding the tablet around face-down on the table surface
Suggesting cutting wires to disconnect the 'blown" speaker
Informercial
fail.

Granted their all quick/temporary fixes at best, but do you have a better suggestion? Preferably a non warranty voiding one....
Mine blew from using the alarm clock and a standard tone. Pretty ridiculous and am buying a cheap bluetooth speaker to use in my room for movies and alarm. I sent it to Asus last week and delivery confirmation shows they just got it. Hope this is a quick turnaround.
Good afternoon everyone. My best regards to earlyberd for this post. I used the information herein to continue the project where it left off…even though it may not be entirely in the OP’s original direction. I bought the suggested speakers using earlyberd’s link to Mouser. I was able to fit these guys into the Nexus 7, but it took quite a bit of mod work (in my opinion). So, I will quickly share my craziness and fill in details if there is interest.
Attached Word doc has embedded pics. The un-links below are higher res.
Nexus framework milled out with a small Dremel engraving bit:

Speakers staged for fitment:

Everybody wired and working:

It is not apparent in the pictures, but I had to trim some of the ground plane off of the usb/audio jack circuit board to make everything fit. Some may get a queasy feeling at the thought of doing this. I would be happy to provide very detailed pictures for anyone interested.
Thanks.

Fix for distorting speakers.

Nice and simple too.
My speakers were 'distorting', even at half volume sometimes. Now they don't. Just been listening to rock music on YouTube at full volume, and I didn't hear it happen again once.
Step 1. Carefully remove the back cover.
Step 2. Observe the speakers little cloth coverings. It was these that were being vibrated against the back cover.
Step 3. Throw them away to f!?k. (Or even remove them very very carefully, and if this didn't make a difference for you, you can just put them right back on, the choice is yours)
Step 4. Replace back cover.
Sound vastly improved. Congratulations. You are now a fully qualified electronics engineer.
Obviously it doesn't now sound like a boom box, but the 'distortion' is gone, even when left untouched at max volume with music on YouTube. Just be careful to not stick your thumb right through one of them when removing the cloth bit. And if your speakers don't 'distort', then don't do this, you're wasting your time. Also, don't pour iron filings in the back of your nexus once you're finished.
The noisiest tune that immediately sprang to mind was this...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD-E-LDc384&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Doesn't distort on full volume, so try playing that before you decide if you should try this. It did distort on mine before. Skip past the intro.
Edit: for some reason there are some notification sounds that can still make a little buzz, but that's obviously just the limitations of the speaker. I've cured (on mine at least), buzzing when watching a news clip, or some game music used to do it as well.

I'm planning on giving this a try... but I'm not convinced.. I don't recall the speakers being anywhere near the protective cloth stuff.
The speakers aren't near the cloth bits. The sound from the speakers was vibrating the cloth bits against the back casing, which they do touch, either that or it was just from their own vibrations, its not like you can see it actually happening...
Like I said, try playing the video clip I posted, because that did distort at max volume before, and does not now. Since I've done it I have not come across a video or music clip that will make them distort. The only thing I can make it happen with is some notification sounds, which is fine, I can just select others.
If the video clip I posted does distort then try it. If you take them off very carefully with a sharp craft knife, not touching the adhesive with your fingers, you'd be able to just stick them right back on anyway. But if the video I posted doesn't distort like mine did, then I wouldn't bother. Mine were pretty bad. I never noticed when I first got my n7 because I hadn't played any video clips or music on YouTube..
Takes 5 minutes, not like you have much to lose..

Thanks for the tip it worked perfect on my 7. I had the same thing as you did with distortion have been using an EQ app for about 6 months now. Not anymore though.... Thanks

I might try this out soon...makes sense as to why the.distortion noise.
Thanks for the tip, I was thinking about sending mine nexus to Asus for a repair but now I will try this myself.
Update:
Damn it didn't help me, actually right now I know that my left speaker is damaged. So I need to find my receipt and send it to Asus
Oh well, at least you found out that it is damaged for sure. I'm going to have a look around some electronics suppliers and see if I can find some better speakers that I can make fit into the same space. If I get something figured out I'll be photographing the conversion and will post it with all info, will be sometime within the next 2 or 3 weeks, I'm looking for suitable candidate speakers now.
Edit: I just found a pair of speakers in an HP spares or repairs laptop I had kicking around. They look similar in size, and I know for sure that they're better quality than the ones in my n7. Hmmm. Performing extraction surgery right now.

Ah.. A different problem then.. Because the "normal" distorted speaker problem also happens with the cover off entirely. it's the speaker itself.

I should have checked mine just with the back cover off, because I'm not sure if it was the cloth bits vibrating against the mesh on the casing, or if it was just the cloth bits vibrating on their own. I was too scared to have my new baby powered up while I investigated hehe, so I can't say for sure that it would or wouldn't have still been happening with the cover off.

Knuckles tell us how the speaker replacement went, I am interested in the outcome.

No probs, will do. I'm not sure whether to use the laptop speakers which I extracted, or instead try to source the best little speakers I can find. I think I'll maybe have a look online today to see if I can find any quality ones. Even the laptop ones look much more like proper speakers than the ones in the nexus though.

There's a thread on this forum somewhere, someone replaced the speakers with some from a netbook but they were the wrong imedence and had very low output once replaced.
I'm beginning to think this would be a better speaker:

There's probably enough room on the back of the casing to glue like 3 of those speakers on. I'll keep that in mind
I think in gonna just try to spend some money and find the best little speakers I can fit in there.. And I shall be careful of the impedance. Thanks for that.

What is the Ohms ratting of the stock speakers?
You know that one of the little tricks Bose uses to make so much sound out of little speakers is that they are only 2 ohms. Makes me think that a similar approach might work with the nexus. They would have to be of a lot better quality than the stock ones to handle it though...
Plus, have you thought about hacking up the stock little speaker case to mount new ones?....

Best Headphones for LG G2

I just ordered my lg g2 phone Since this phone supports 24-bit, 192 kHz Hi-Fi playback for FLAC and WAV files i'm looking for a pair of in ear headphones w/ Mic do anybody have any ideas?
TripleFi 10
i have a triple fi as well. they rock. but also pretty expensive.
the op wanted one with mic, but as far as i know, they are all crappy.
Get the meelectronics a161p headphones. They have a mic too. Amazing sound! I am a sound engineer.

You can look into the Shure SE215 but they cost more with the mic. I think it it all comes down to your budget but if your considering sound quality to be important you'll have to put down some serious coin.
Thanks allot guys for all the quick reply's..
Has anybody heard of the Quadbeat 2 headphones they say it was made for the G2

They came with my G2, international version, in the box.
Decent in ear headphones as compared to others (Apple, Samsung), offers pretty good noise isolation but lacking in bass.
You can get them on eBay for about 20 dollars, I heard. Plastic build, wire gets stained easily since it's rubber. Wouldn't really recommend it. But alright if you're just looking for an average pair of headphones with mic that works with the G2.

That's great to know. glade I didn't get it now.. I have a $12 credit with buydig.com and notice they have a sennheiser cx 275 on sale for $24. I have a sennheiser cx 215 w/o mic and it sounds amazing so I figure this would sound just as good and with a mic. SO I guess i'll try that with my G2 and the poweramp app.. I also should of mention that this will be mostly used at work around dust so I really don't want anything over price for that.
I'm using a-JAYS-Four with powerAMP.
Awesome for me.
Not a fan of the in ear headphones. Can anyone suggest regular headphones? What's a good one to get?

I tried alot of earphones using the stock Music app, and the bass was just sorely lacking... I ended up buying the Coloud Pop. They are insanely cheap, and offers enough thump to deliver the bass that the software lacks. I love them colors too.

Same here. I've had the shure se215LE for a year now and just went and compared them with the 535 and 435 in store and didn't hear a reason to upgrade. I do use Viper for Android 's root app though which levels the playing field. Aside- If you want quality sound from your phone, it makes all the difference. I feel like half my sound comes from the headphones and half from V4A. Let me put it this way... it's good enough to make a $120 pair sound just as good, if not better, than a $500 pair.
Anyway it doesn't come with a mic, but you can easily find the inline mic attachment for about $20 online or in a store.
Klispch also still sells the s4a with a mic if I'm not mistaken, but as far as cheap in ears go, I can't recommend the Shures enough. The fit may take some getting used to in the beginning, but that would be my only concern with em

Budget?
Are you going to get an amp?
What kind of music do you listen too?
As people mentioned here, your budget is what will determine the final outcome. You know what they say, more money->more music
As far as headphones go, i have a pair of Panasonics DJ series (can't remember exact model) and the sound is amazing. Lacks mic, but headphones are just crazy. Priced around 80-ish $. Basically, you'll want to look for old school brands like Sennheiser and you wont make a mistake.
I was using my headphones for a while but the cost to battery is just a bit too much, so i switched to Sennheiser earphones and they're just amazing! Got them for about 15€ on mad discount at Amsterdam's Media Markt rofl.
