To use a case or not? - Nexus 4 General

Besides the fact of keeping the phone in good condition for resale later on, and or working in a dirty environment. Why do YOU use a case on your Nexus 4?
And who is using the phone just naked?
Don't forget to vote in the poll as well!

This phone is solid yet fragile at the same time. I have hard cover snap on simply because I do not want to damage the back. Without a case it pretty much takes only one fall for the glass to crack.

My Nexus 4 is my most scratched phone (thanks to it's weak back glass) and the chrome borders are so soft you can even mark them with your nails...
I'm so happy that my case finally arrived last week...

Cuz i can!

Can you easily cough up another 350? Without, it's a fantastic piece of equipment to hold & admire.
Can you not? Buy a nice thin case and be extremely f**ng careful with it, chances are it will shatter when falling on to the wrong surface.
Now you can't say we didn't warn you.

I use the LG bumper case because it gives the phone protection and still looks like it is part of the phone. I also love that the buttons on the bumper feel exactly like the ones on the actual phone.
The big negative though, is the extra bulk. I could go without that but I'd rather have peace of mind knowing that if I drop the phone it at least stands some sort of a chance of surviving scratch free.

11 weeks of daily use and abuse yet not a single scratch and mine it's NAKED!
Don't know what others are doing with their phones but mine is holding up superbly.
(Note: I do have a Poetic bumper but I really use it. It's naked 99.99% of the time.)

I went for the Nillkin case cause of the back.
One day before I received it, my cat managed to throw my mobile down while charging.
Chrome Border has a slight dent on the left side, lucky the glass didn't shatter.
So, yes, a case is necessary

I use the LG bumper and have the poetic bumper as well, with no screen protectors on either side. No scratches and everything is fine.
I've never used a full case on a phone, and never will. I still take the bumper off sometimes, this phone looks nice but even with the LG bumper people think it's just the phone without anything on it.

Naked. I hate cases.

Me im going to have my phone all natural when in use, but when in my pocket im going to go for a Bugatti pouch.

Naked, had the poetic bumper case but it was poor quality and fell apart. No scratches or dents with a lot of use

I've had mine since November 15 with no case or screen protector and so far I have a tiny scratch on the front that could only be seen with the keenest of eye sight. I think it was when I was salting my walk way and there must have been some salt residue on my fingers. As for the back there's a couple scratches that happened when I was entering a courthouse and I had to put my phone in one of those plastic trays before I went through a medal detector. I'm almost certain there was some kind of dirt dust in there that caused it. It was literally in the for 5 seconds. I actually considered that possibility and I was right. Overall I baby this thing.. Not counting the time in the plastic bin. I never lay it down on a surface without thinking of the consequences first. When I'm at my house I always put it on a winter hat or a sock or something. For one to protect it from scratches and also to avoid it sliding off on it's own. Don't get me wrong I love this phone, but compared to my Nexus S I feel like it's so fragile. That's why I just ordered an official bumper. To take some of the edge off while using it every day. I don't want to have to worry about it as much.

Official bumper case with Skinomi protectors on front and back. Perfect condition.

To all the people using it naked or with a bumper it's only a matter of time before we see your thread how it cracked in your pocket or best case you just scratch it up. I mean you guys do know that once you crack the front the phone stops working.
I use a mercury slim case because I know this phone is fragile and even though I probably got my nexus for free since I resold a few I would never use it naked for more than a few minutes. Hey some people like living on the edge

Also so that it does not break so I don't have to repair it. I was going to buy the bumper then realized with no case the back of my phone has a chance of cracking if I hit it against something while it's in my pocket.

As I just posted in the post right above this one. This is the exact reason I did not order the bumper from the play store today. I thought about it.

SF Matte Black - Rearth Ringke SLIM for LG Google Nexus 4 Soft Feeling Premium Hard Case - ECO Package [Revised Version]
to protect the back/sides of it which is look like prone to be scratched and broken also protect the Camera lens, Plus good and nice grip.
so i can just put any where without the fear to break/scratch the back glass!.

I always use my phones naked, cases are big and screen protector makes the screen less fluid-like to swipe on.

Otterbox alternative?

Okay I would prefer to have an Otterbox for my Nexus S, but apparently they won't be making one. Anyone know of an Otterbox alternative? I already have a silicon case, a TPU case on the way, and a hard case. (The hard case is a generic piece of crap, doesn't have any padding or rubber coating on the inside so the phone gets scratched when it vibrates, etc.)
Im open to suggestions. Willing to spend $25ish.
$25ish... otterbox style cases sell for 40+. But check out the casemate pop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4auzR3OVB8 it's the best case i could find on the market right now.
Feel free to suggest the $40+ alternatives. If its worth it, a few bucks don't matter to me.
Thanks for the suggestion on Cast Mate, but it doesn't cover the front top area.
Yeah i was in the same predicament, the trident is the only 3 layer case i could find (a la defender)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MenxwxVixGM&feature=channel_video_title but it's not out yet and the makers don't even say when it will be. the best cases you can butyright now are the pop and the seido active x. neither have the glass protector but the pop comes with a crappy scratch protector for the screen, and you can buy it at best buy (which is why i chose it over the active x). if you find one with a glass protector let me know as i am terrified i'm gonna drop my phone screen first on a rock.

The Trident Cyclops? Its out: http://www.tridentcases.com/product_52_67.html
EDIT: I was about ready to buy this phone until I saw in that video review that the screen protector isnt a perfect fit to the curved design of the nexus...
its not out the buy now button takes you to a preorder now page. and it isnt a perfct fit because of the curve, it can probably be adjusted for with some scratch protectors on the glass to make it a tighter fit.
It's showing that the Trident Cyclops is available on amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/Trident-CY-GN..._1_3?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1303943168&sr=1-3
I own the Trident Case, and I have no issues with the screen cover not matching 100%.
There may be a slight gap between the screen cover and the phone itself, but it is minuscule at worst. I have yet to have an issue with the touchscreen not working because of this 'gap'.
The case is pretty sturdy overall, the only real gripe I have against it is the plastic cover over the rear-facing camera reflects a fair amount of flash, distorting pictures. I had to remove it to take a decent picture.
Hope this helps.
Thank you for the feedback. It does help. I will probabaly go for the Trident case unless a better alternative is given.
No worries.
I should also mention that the silicon ring around the outside of the shell is very grippy stuff. Which means it will stick to the inside of your pockets and such.

May I ask where you got yours from? The one from Amazon ships in "1 to 3 months" and there doesn't seem to be a way to order directly from Trident's website.
I ordered mine straight from their website roughly a month ago. Very pleasant company to work with. I had to call and change my order and they were very helpful. You could try calling them and seeing if they are out of stock or whatnot.

I ordered the trident case yesterday. It said it wouldn't be in stock until 5/11 but I'm ok with that. As far as the screen protector goes, with all of my otterbox cases I've always taken that out and put my own sp on it.
The only benefit of the sp on the case is that it seals your phone from dust.
Can't wait to get mine and see how it feels. Best of luck finding what your looking for.

Did you get your case? How do you like it? Does the phone scratch from the inside of the case since there is no interior soft padding?
http://www.seidioonline.com/product-p/bd4-hkr4ssn2.htm
I bought the Seidio Convert.
Like the otterbox it comes with a holster.
It is actually 2 cases in one.
The 1st case is a thin 2 piece hard shell. Nice for in the pocket.
Then you pop a silicone case over that with an additional hard plastic exo-skeleton that protects the sides and corners.
The holster is much better than the otterbox holster and can even lock the phone in.

I bought the same case and I'm pretty happy with it. I find it a little bulky with the full protection and the holster but it's not that bad. I'll come back with pictures.
I just bought that case at bust buy. I hope the inner hard shell case doesn't scratch due to vibration. With all three layers on, it feels like I'm sticking my finger into an oraface.... The outside shell reminds me of fingers. Add that all together and I get the mental image of "what you see you cannot unsee," goatse.
I might have to "circumcise" the rubber lens cap flap so I can do some stealth video/photo shots a little easier. There's nothing more annoying than your flap getting in the way!
LMAO
Now all I need as a home screen wallpaper pic is a shot of someone's "insides" and that would, LOL, complete the whatever. LOL

well after searching for a case, my search is over.. i just came to conclusion that i cant stand cases... i will go naked, anyone else naked? if so how are you standing any scratches?
i just love the nude feeling of my phone. no better feeling imo.
Yes but I am protecting it. Its too elegant. I cant leave it without a case until i go to sleep where I spend 1-3 hours using the phone then I take the phone off the case. But when I am at work or going out, it has to be in a case !

I NEVER use a cover OR screen protector on my phones. Modern phones are hard wearing enough to not need one. Even without a screen protector, my One XL never had a screen scratch even after a year.
Cases are ugly, make the phone bulkier and hide the HTC build goodness. Screen protectors ruin the feel and look of the display.
Agreed, everyone bangs on about the build quality and one of the reasons this phone is better than the s4 is because the galaxy is crappy plastic and the one is stunning aluminum but then cover their one in crappy plastic or leather anyway! I bought the double dip case and used it for a day, spoilt the phone. Unless you work on a building site then leave alone and enjoy your phone. If you're that worried you can get insurance for next to nothing, in fact, a lot of back accounts give you insurance for free!

I'm waiting for Beyza to release a slim leather pouch for the HTC One. I emailed them but they said nothing was in the works yet.
I've never used screen protectors or anything like that but I personally like pouches as they allow you to transport the phone with decent protection and when you use it you get to appreciate it in all its glory. I've always wondered why you would add a piece of cheapish plastic in front of a nice screen anyway.
I haven't got my HTC One yet but am planning on ordering one of these
I'm not going to use a case. I've had cases for previous phones, but I always took them off after a few days because I hate them. So I will go with a leather pouch again just like I always have

Used to have a pouch only policy until I damaged my One X, this time ill try an easy to pull out transparent cover
There is something relieving about covers, you just use your phone without focusing too much but yea I would go with the most thin/transparent/easy to remove cover
Shame about the official double flip, its really nice but not of good quality

Didn't use a cover on my Sensation and it's still in pristine conditions after 2 years. No reason to use a cover if you keep it in your pocket and don't use your phone in disaster zones!
The only reason I've bought a case for my Sensation was because my Clingo car mount was starting to rip the plastic bits from its back.
Considered going naked with it, but eventually I caved in and ordered myself a Spigen Ultra Thin Air.
It comes with a screen protector too, but I don't use these.
When at home it's going to be naked, unless my little sister would be playing with it at that moment.
I've tried cases with several phones I've owned and they never last more than a week or two. Don't plan on buying one for the One. I'm sure I'll regret it someday, but that's what equipment coverage is for!
The problem with the spigen is that its built from hard plastic, too tight for the device and also will most likely break on fall, I prefer the slim Xlevis transparent rubber case looks better as well (posted photos on mega thread)

Same here. My Sensation has been used caseless for two years and its still fine. I've flung it onto a footpath, dropped it many times, placed it in pockets with coins etc and it remarkably robust. I loved the utilitarian design of the Senny. A rubber back for grip, recessed screen. It's been brilliant. The screen has a few sleeks on it, but no scratches.
I wonder how the ONE will fare if treated the same
Pah!
I am loving the feel of my phone. Part of me is thinking of just getting a bumper for it.

id say that a lot less people break the back glass than you think, not even close to everyone. i abuse my device, and have watched it fall many time, no broken back glass. there are micro-scratches on the back, and the front is in perfect condition. that back glass helps the phone cool down faster by transferring the heat out of the phone, thats why the back is glass.

I have a Nexus 4 on the way (very excited to be coming back to Android from WP7). I'm looking at getting the Poetic bumper because I like the colours, and that's what Google seems to recommend for the phone. Does anyone think bumpers help with protection? I am under the impression that cracks and breaks happen when the edge of the devices is met with force, and not just blunt force to the glass, because that is what Gorilla Glass is designed to resist.

The poetic is actually an alright case. The bumpers help with most drops that land on the side. But if you have some sort of coins in your pocket or keys or anything that can scratch the back or front I recommend a back and front screen protector. And also wherever you drop the bumper case the glass will not crack. The weakest spot for it is if a acute object goes straight into the middle of the phone ( near the nexus logo)

I have left my nexus 4 in my pocket but don't tell me how fragile the back is to scratches man! Everywhere. My front screen was perfect and the back was scratched like hell.
Now I have the nillkin matte case but I would much rather if it had the carbon fiber back. Carbon fiber is still a strong competitor to glass. Are those skins hard or soft?

I never put anything but my phone in my right pants pocket. I have an HTC Titan that I had the OEM case and 2 3rd party cases and just stopped using them because they added too much bulk, and also had to be removed to be docked. I've had my Titan for over a year and I've only dropped it maybe 4 or 5 times. I really just need cursory protection as I've never broken a phone.

They are soft. I own two of there skins (installed one so far). They are certainly for aesthetic purposes with the exception that they prevent scratches. Here is my setup with a ringke fusion case.
Dbrand was nice enough to not cut out the nexus symbol on request. The less places for dust to collect the better.

I like the look of the nexus letters showing.... Do you think it would be better to have them not cut out? I like it and seems a little more decoration because its plain. Surely it cant collect a lot of dust can it?

There's such a case but some users have reported total signal loss, while some others get just mild signal loss. Try at your own risk

And thus it's most likely an aluminium back won't work unless there are plastic cutouts for the antenna.

Flex Thin Cases

What are the thinnest Flex cases? Post pictures if you can. The only issue I have with the Flex if you call it a issue is that I don't want to hide the curves. lol I want the thinnest case. Might just have to go with a full body protector.
thanks
get this one bro; super thin, great grip ridges on the side, and it fits like a glove..

You have it? I might get the clear or red one. I guess a mall has cell phone shop that will like shrink wrap a protector on any phone/tab. lol I might take a look at that today.
yeah, I have the red one..its super thin, just like you are looking for..
problem with those shrink wrapped type skins is that if you drop the phone on its edge, on concrete, they wont keep you from chipping the phone...

Post some pictures of the case on your phone if you can. I just wanted something that will make the phone not as slippery with limited bulk possible. I'm not going to say what I want to say for the fear of jinking myself. lol

I will later today, after I exchange this defective phone...but trust me, this is the slimmest, thinnest tpu type case you could imagine for this phone..
I ended up ordering that case and another one yesterday. I guess I didn't need to start another thread.
Sorry mods.
sorry I forgot to post pics; got busy restoring the phone all day yesterday..
Trust me, if you wanted a thin, unobtrusive cast, you bought the right one..what other case did you get?

This one. Only a few bucks so what the heck. A local mall has a invisible shield store and I wanted to have them install one but they said it might be a week til they get it. Might buy one online and have them put it on. I'm kind of picky and thinking they might not stay on with a curved phone as well though. I've had clear plastic cases that don't add much bulk but that's not happening with a curved phone. lol
Fosmon HYBO-SK Series Hybrid PC + TPU Kickstand Case for LG G Flex (Black)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...N=B00HCNFVSO&linkCode=as2&tag=androheadl04-20
I had one of those on my one maxx; its OK, for a cheapo, but not as flexible as the other one you ordered..
for the price, its worth having around.
BTW, I had installed one of those skins on my flex; it was ok for a few days, then it started to come up around the round corners, so I don't know if one is good for a rounded phone like this. I am good at installing these things, but I couldn't get it perfect...
I'm still thinking about getting LG flip case. I know it's pricey but the discount helps and it provides good protection. Don't think you need a screen protctor with that case.

MPERO FLEX S Series Protective Case for LG G Flex
It's ok and doesn't add that much bulk. I don't think it fits like it should on my Flex because I have a Otter Box 360 on. I think I just want a pouch to put my Flex in when I go golfing.

Feather Shine
So I just put the Feather Shine on - it's a nice case, and looks pretty good. There's a strange thing, however: the corners on the front are shaped/recessed in such a way that when the phone is lying face down, the phone's top and bottom edges and corners are in contact with the table. I would prefer if the feather shine was what was touching the table.
I'm very curious about the Vest thing that LG has on their site. I can only find it (so far) from Korean vendors on eBay, with 3-4 week delivery times, so I haven't pulled the trigger. It seems to be minimalist protection, focusing protection exactly on the area I am concerned about: the front corners and top and bottom edges of the phone. Does anyone know someplace in the US that's selling these?
Thanks!
I have the quick window case. It's a nice design with nice patterns and such. The only thing I didn't like was that it really doesn't stand up to scratches much. It makes a nasty scuff Mark on the front of the door where it hits the back of the phone. I bought a vest from overseas last week for $20 on eBay. We'll see how that goes.

Not sure I understand the scuff mark. So the vest case overseas is the same as LG's but you save 40 bucks? Send me the link. Thanks

yep, thats why i have to go with otterbox... hoping lifeproof will kicka$$,,ordered the otterbox symmetry and the alpha otterglass,75$ is better than my godd$%#n phone cracked
I guess i was overconfident after watching all those drop test videos, anyways i ordered the replacement screen that was posted and will replace it myself which seems easy.
Usually never rock cases on my phones but when I heard this phone was gonna have a glass back and after owning an iPhone that had a cracked glass back due to a drop I ordered a case for my S6 when I got home from T-Mobile lol.
Got a Spigen Ultra Hybrid case on the phone. Slim, clear, cheap and offers a fair bit more protection. Not bulky at all like some of those otterbox cases which are just too much for me.

I'd check for a metal one if it happens again. My friend got one for his iPhone the second time he cracked it.

A metal back ? Where do they sell those lol.
Try to avoid too much metal on the case if you want good reception, also a metal case would pretty much nix wireless charging for you if you use that.
I don't know if the S6 is that different in terms of the wireless radio signal's penetrating power, but my iPhone 4's glass back was broken and replaced with a metal back piece and worked fine.

I think the bigger problem is that your screen is painted over in white and also has a camera/heart rate monitor in the middle of it. The back of your phone is not the screen!:good:

+1 Besides all that a hard plastic shell protects much better than metal. Ill never under stand the want for "premium" builds, they just crack, dent and conduct electricity better. I have seen more cracked and dented premium built iphones than all android phones put together. Seriously everybody I know who has a iphone has had a damaged iphone at one time. Im getting a case on this phone the second I get it which pretty much makes that premium build nothing but a bragging right. That is a stupid thing to brag about if you ask me.

It is called "glass." Corning did not break his phone. We're his phone made of normal glass, the results would have been worse.
Luckily, T-mobile forces you to get jump for the first month. You're out $175, but at least you can get a new phone.
The glass is very strong.
The problem with glass is the stronger you make it by tempering the more likely it will fail, sometimes explosively, when that "pent up" tension is suddenly released! How does it happen? All it takes is a strike or stress to the edge. Strikes to the face with blunt objects won't do it. It can take an incredible amount of abuse. So how do you prevent this from happening? A case, even a thin one, will work wonders. When it's dropped even a thin TPU will absorb this sharp shock that the glass would receive when struck on its edge. Of course a face down drop onto gravel allowing a stone to strike the glass on the edge will still cause it to break when it hits right. And Mister Murphy will ensure this just as a cat always lands on its feet...
Even a bumper will offer protection from edge impacts. Unfortunately you have to cover things up for a more rounded real life solution.
Sorry boutcha bro.. Case it up. I ordered the Case Mate clear case that T-Mobile has in store at $34.99 for $18 on Amazon. Got it today and its like its not even on, super thin and clear with metal buttons. I HIGHLY recommend it. At least it's SUPER EASY to replace the back cover, like 5 minutes if that..
