Nexus 4 back with carbon fiber? - Nexus 4 General

Was thinking since everyone always breaks the back glass, maybe it would be nice if someone could get a company of some sort to make one replacing the glass? XD
Imagine, would look awesome with a carbon fiber back. No more cracks sweeeet.
Sorry not sure if right thread? Pics if anyone has don't this would be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure he is talking about replacing the glass with carbon fiber not just covering it
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

id say that a lot less people break the back glass than you think, not even close to everyone. i abuse my device, and have watched it fall many time, no broken back glass. there are micro-scratches on the back, and the front is in perfect condition. that back glass helps the phone cool down faster by transferring the heat out of the phone, thats why the back is glass.

I have a Nexus 4 on the way (very excited to be coming back to Android from WP7). I'm looking at getting the Poetic bumper because I like the colours, and that's what Google seems to recommend for the phone. Does anyone think bumpers help with protection? I am under the impression that cracks and breaks happen when the edge of the devices is met with force, and not just blunt force to the glass, because that is what Gorilla Glass is designed to resist.

The poetic is actually an alright case. The bumpers help with most drops that land on the side. But if you have some sort of coins in your pocket or keys or anything that can scratch the back or front I recommend a back and front screen protector. And also wherever you drop the bumper case the glass will not crack. The weakest spot for it is if a acute object goes straight into the middle of the phone ( near the nexus logo)

I have left my nexus 4 in my pocket but don't tell me how fragile the back is to scratches man! Everywhere. My front screen was perfect and the back was scratched like hell.
Now I have the nillkin matte case but I would much rather if it had the carbon fiber back. Carbon fiber is still a strong competitor to glass. Are those skins hard or soft?

I never put anything but my phone in my right pants pocket. I have an HTC Titan that I had the OEM case and 2 3rd party cases and just stopped using them because they added too much bulk, and also had to be removed to be docked. I've had my Titan for over a year and I've only dropped it maybe 4 or 5 times. I really just need cursory protection as I've never broken a phone.

Wheeew you know I was just looking at the post the guy who had the skins and they look amazing! Carbon fiber with a black poetic case would work awesome! They protect against scratches and also the bumper protects the actual screen...
Now you got me wanting a skin and a bumper myself xD

From the pictures it looks like it's in between hard and soft. The textures seem pretty great though.

I know right! I've actually changed my mind and I'm getting a carbon fiber with a blue TPU bumper case off eBay.
12$ for the skin and 7$ for the bumper= 19$ for a sweet combo! Would look something like this

Anyone know the difference between the poetic bumpers on eBay and the TPU bumpers? Which one is recommended? Not the official since it only comes in black, I want blue...

They are soft. I own two of there skins (installed one so far). They are certainly for aesthetic purposes with the exception that they prevent scratches. Here is my setup with a ringke fusion case.
Dbrand was nice enough to not cut out the nexus symbol on request. The less places for dust to collect the better.

There's such a case but some users have reported total signal loss, while some others get just mild signal loss. Try at your own risk
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2252586
And thus it's most likely an aluminium back won't work unless there are plastic cutouts for the antenna.

[REVIEW] Nillkin Hard Case

Today I took receipt of 2 Nillkin Hard Cases for the GT-N7100 Galaxy Note (One brown, one Red.)
I bought them from eBay for around £6 each delivered, the quality is surprisingly good, I wasn't keen on having a TPU or Soft Silicone case, or the flip case that I had for my original Note. So I thought I'd give this one a try.
You can see that it comes well packaged, not just in an envelope as is usually the case from Chinese suppliers of such products.

It also includes a screen protector, I've not yet fitted that, as I already have one fitted that's in good condition.
As you can see from the next set of photos, it doesn't really add a great deal of bulk, which is another reason I didn't want a TPU or Silicon case.
Granted I can't see it protecting the phone from a massive fall, but I wanted to keep the svelte lines as much as I could, whilst adding some grip, which it does nicely with the texture that is on the under side.
The fit is really snug, I had reservations at first, but once it's fitted it doesn't move at all, so I have no worries about it slipping off.
All-in-all I think it's a really good product, it adds protection from scratches for most of the phone, whilst not being too bulky, just enough thickness to save the camera lens from getting scratched when you put the phone down.
So if you're looking for a case and have similar requirements to my own, consider giving this one a try.
thank you for your return
Excellent review and photos, its a shame the case doesn't cover the top and bottom of the phone .
i just made a thread about this, but yours is nicer so....
I didn't like the fit at ALL until I just removed the back cover from my note 2 completely.
I don't really care about NFC so I'm okay with this. I like having a bit more lip too.
I find a couple of the edges a bit sharp. meaning if I hold the phone in landscape, my index fingers get scraped a little bit by the case edges.
I might sand them down or something.
The texture on the case is quite nice - pretty subtle but noticable when you hold it.

I know what you mean, but at least it looks uniform all the way around, I had a couple of flip cases, one made by a company called Tenda, great case and had a similar hard back to it, that case did cover all the edges... except for one corner, it would have looked a bit daft if it didn't have the flip screen cover.
But because of the material, I think it would be a nightmare taking it off, if it did cover every edge, as because it's really stiff, you need some leverage when you do want to remove it.

It might just be the batch you've got perhaps, I've just been around both cases, both on and off, and there are no sharp edges, in your case, a small nail file or wet'n'dry should do the trick.
I think I know what you mean about the fit, I too was a bit cautious as it "almost" sits flush with the screen, but there is a bit of a lip and I've shaken the hell out it and it's going know where haha.

That's a really nice case you have there. I envy your adventurous nature in going for red, I'd be more conservative and go for grey or black!
Anyhow I was also looking at this similar case and thought it offers a little more protection around the top / bottom. Any opinions?

I'd be more inclined to go for the one you've found, for that added protection, I have ordered a aluminum bumper and a flip case which I'll probably post a review about, unless someone already has.
I might buy the one you've posted about too lol.
Yeah I'm on the case hunt too. Already bought the S-Line with kickstand just yesterday. I also really like the look of the one I linked to above. I'm interested in this flip cover too , which I really like for its corner protection - should be protective enough for most falls and no magnet involved to interfere with the s-pen.
And worst of all, I don't even own a Note 2 yet. Crazy or what?!
Anyhow apologies for hijacking your useful review thread

I use an xtremeguard screen protector, which goes all the way to the edge (like zagg). The case works fine and doesn't overlap on the screen at all. I don't know how to accurately describe it, but it kind of just sits on the chrome bezel.
______
This case scratches REALLY easily on the back, like the Speck Candyshell. I only have my wallet in the same pocket, and there are noticeable scratches on the back. I think if it get's cheaper in the future, I'll pick another one up and try to make this one matte with fine sandpaper.

It goes all the way to the edge. My first one actually got scratched up when I used an alcohol pad to clean it.
No lifting so far. Please be advised that the pen does not work well with it. I use the pen like once every two weeks, so I just left this screen protector on. Might replace it when there is a non-zagg-like one that goes to the edges.

To use a case or not?

Besides the fact of keeping the phone in good condition for resale later on, and or working in a dirty environment. Why do YOU use a case on your Nexus 4?
And who is using the phone just naked?
Don't forget to vote in the poll as well!
This phone is solid yet fragile at the same time. I have hard cover snap on simply because I do not want to damage the back. Without a case it pretty much takes only one fall for the glass to crack.
My Nexus 4 is my most scratched phone (thanks to it's weak back glass) and the chrome borders are so soft you can even mark them with your nails...
I'm so happy that my case finally arrived last week...
Cuz i can!

Can you easily cough up another 350? Without, it's a fantastic piece of equipment to hold & admire.
Can you not? Buy a nice thin case and be extremely f**ng careful with it, chances are it will shatter when falling on to the wrong surface.
Now you can't say we didn't warn you.
I use the LG bumper case because it gives the phone protection and still looks like it is part of the phone. I also love that the buttons on the bumper feel exactly like the ones on the actual phone.
The big negative though, is the extra bulk. I could go without that but I'd rather have peace of mind knowing that if I drop the phone it at least stands some sort of a chance of surviving scratch free.
11 weeks of daily use and abuse yet not a single scratch and mine it's NAKED!
Don't know what others are doing with their phones but mine is holding up superbly.
(Note: I do have a Poetic bumper but I really use it. It's naked 99.99% of the time.)

I went for the Nillkin case cause of the back.
One day before I received it, my cat managed to throw my mobile down while charging.
Chrome Border has a slight dent on the left side, lucky the glass didn't shatter.
So, yes, a case is necessary

I've never used a full case on a phone, and never will. I still take the bumper off sometimes, this phone looks nice but even with the LG bumper people think it's just the phone without anything on it.

Naked, had the poetic bumper case but it was poor quality and fell apart. No scratches or dents with a lot of use
I've had mine since November 15 with no case or screen protector and so far I have a tiny scratch on the front that could only be seen with the keenest of eye sight. I think it was when I was salting my walk way and there must have been some salt residue on my fingers. As for the back there's a couple scratches that happened when I was entering a courthouse and I had to put my phone in one of those plastic trays before I went through a medal detector. I'm almost certain there was some kind of dirt dust in there that caused it. It was literally in the for 5 seconds. I actually considered that possibility and I was right. Overall I baby this thing.. Not counting the time in the plastic bin. I never lay it down on a surface without thinking of the consequences first. When I'm at my house I always put it on a winter hat or a sock or something. For one to protect it from scratches and also to avoid it sliding off on it's own. Don't get me wrong I love this phone, but compared to my Nexus S I feel like it's so fragile. That's why I just ordered an official bumper. To take some of the edge off while using it every day. I don't want to have to worry about it as much.

To all the people using it naked or with a bumper it's only a matter of time before we see your thread how it cracked in your pocket or best case you just scratch it up. I mean you guys do know that once you crack the front the phone stops working.
I use a mercury slim case because I know this phone is fragile and even though I probably got my nexus for free since I resold a few I would never use it naked for more than a few minutes. Hey some people like living on the edge

Besides the fact of keeping the phone in good condition for resale later on, and or working in a dirty environment. Why do YOU use a case on your Nexus 4?
And who is using the phone just naked?
Don't forget to vote in the poll as well!

Also so that it does not break so I don't have to repair it. I was going to buy the bumper then realized with no case the back of my phone has a chance of cracking if I hit it against something while it's in my pocket.

As I just posted in the post right above this one. This is the exact reason I did not order the bumper from the play store today. I thought about it.

I use the LG bumper and have the poetic bumper as well, with no screen protectors on either side. No scratches and everything is fine.
I've never used a full case on a phone, and never will. I still take the bumper off sometimes, this phone looks nice but even with the LG bumper people think it's just the phone without anything on it.

Out of interest, which is the better bumper?

SF Matte Black - Rearth Ringke SLIM for LG Google Nexus 4 Soft Feeling Premium Hard Case - ECO Package [Revised Version]
to protect the back/sides of it which is look like prone to be scratched and broken also protect the Camera lens, Plus good and nice grip.
so i can just put any where without the fear to break/scratch the back glass!.
I always use my phones naked, cases are big and screen protector makes the screen less fluid-like to swipe on.

Tempered Screen Glass did not fit.

So i bought a tempered glass.
But the sides woulnt fit.
Is this thing a bit round on the glass?
Looks like it is round a bit.
Can you post a pic to get a better idea of what you are describing. Also some screen protectors are smaller than the screen to help with cases and also to avoid edge peeling.

Thanks for helping me out.
Will put a pic if i have my round one
Toeterbaas is right.
Yesterday I have installed one on my Nexus 6 (cheap one from E-Bay) and I am suffering same issue, the sides are not fitting well.
The videos in YouTube shows no issues but I am getting them.
I am not sure what is the reason for that.
Today I've ordered a new one called "G-Shield" from Gizzmo, and I'll try something else, but I am not sure.
Anyone with a successfully installed glass?
Best tempered glass protector I've used. Love it. And I tried like 3 different types.

Goes right around the edges. Can't even see it. Love this protector. Seriously

Buy the one @ozzmanj1 linked above; I'm on my 3rd and they all have fit perfectly. This was the 5th and only one I found on Amazon that fit properly.

That's what I was saying as well; just confirming that it was the best one to buy since I've been through a lot of these things. The N6 seems to be a hard phone to fit a TG screen protector on due to the curved screen edges.
No argument intended, but I did edit my original post to clarify. :good:

Apologies I guess I misunderstood. But yeah, it's awesome. I bought 2 extra glass covers. It's superb

I have bought a Nillkin 9H+ 2.5D Tempered glass screen protector, it costs about 12 bucks on ebay, and it is brilliant, one of the best tempered glass you can buy for your Nexus 6. I'd say it is the best one, but I didn't tried every single one on the market, so I can't. But it is hard to imagine a tempered glass for our dear Shamu to be any better than this.
The glass is precisely cut to end right where the glass on the phone starts to curve, so there is almost no halo effect, just a very minor at the top, but that's nothing to worry about. It is also very durable, at 9H it is as strong as other tempered glasses, but in reality it is very hard to scratch it, believe me, I tried. I even tried things like sandpaper on it, just for fun You can obviously scratch it with a sandpaper or something really hard, but with any everyday item like scissors, keys etc. it can't be scratched.
It has also very smooth surface with super good anti fingerprint coating, it doesn't get fingerprints as much as other glasses do, and when it gets dirty, you can easily wipe it on your t-shirt or something. It is also very comfortable for fingers, so much it is in fact addictive
I use it for about half of a year now, and I can fully recommend it. It will last long if you don't drop your phone and crack it. I think it can easily last over a year if you don't drop it and crack it. Mine is cracked but I still use it anyway, because the crack isn't very visible.
Cutouts are proper and precise, on the top there is a cutout for a proximity sensor, the front facing camera is covered under the glass. No image quality issues if you care about selfies.
You can't definitely go wrong with this one, it is worth every dollar. It can be a little more expensive one at $12, but it is worth it. If it breaks, I'll buy the same one again. I use it with Spigen neo hybrid case and it is perfectly fine.
And as a bonus, you get a couple of small rear camera plastic protectors.
I might take a photo when I get home if you want
PS: the edges of the glass are a little rounded, so called 2.5D effect. Very cool and smooth for fingers.

Real wood slickwraps with the curved back???

Hey there XDA freinds. I'm REALLY wanting to get the Bamboo Slickwrap for my white Note 5, but from my experience with putting the bamboo skin on the Nexus 6, the real wood does not play well with curves. I ended up getting it on the curved back of the N6 good with a hair dryer. Got the sides heated up and extra sticky and it held down pretty good. Just wondering if anybody has tried on the Note 5 yet. Its mostly flat, but the edges are curved so much that I fear it will be impossible to get the real wood skins on without breaking them or having them pop up.
Any feedback is appreciated.
i'd be curious to know too. they look pretty slick (no pun intended). I know with dbrand skins in general, they say to use a hair dryer for the curves of a phone, so that's probably pretty standard, OP.

that's cool. how much thicker was it than a normal wrap? could you tell it was a little thicker? also, is it slick to the touch or kind of matte (helping with holding it?)

It's pretty thick compared to a regular wrap. At least as thick as stacking 3-4 standard skins on top of each other.
As for the feel. It's real bamboo. Feels like bamboo. The closest thing I can compare the texture to (other than bamboo) is a wooden cutting board. It's a very nice feel and the wood has enough texture to make the phone pretty easy to hold. When I had the bamboo on my nexus I never felt like I was going to drop it like I did without a case or skin.

nice. could you feel like a sharp edge at the bottom of the phone from the wrap? when I hold my phone, I have my pinky finger under the bottom of the phone supporting it.

I hold mine the same way. Have had the "sharp edge" issue with several cases but not the bamboo slick wrap. It was pretty comfortable.

Had a leather back on my nexus 6 favorite phone accessory by far. It looks like the style / company who makes the leather for the note might be different? Very interested in pictures.

Exactly, even giving thought into punching out a hole in my leather once it arrives to mimic the dimple in my Nexus right now. I hope / think the leather is thick enough that it will recede the camera lens._Thoughts?

Just did a quick test. I layed my previous leather skin from my Nexus 6 on the Note5, it's nearly flush with the camera. Giving some thought on "padding" around the camera cut out in order to raise it slightly. Hope it gets here soon.

That looks great, could you take a picture of it from the side? I'm curious how far it sticks up from the edge. Also any signs of it peeling off?

Gorgeous. As expected. But can we get a pic maybe of the phone laying flat on a table, and from the side. As other said, would like to get an idea of the depth of the skin.
Also, is this skin still on the phone? Are the sides peeling at all? How did you get it to wrap around the curved edges so nice? Do you use the hairdryer trick?

Hello,
If your familiar with the Nexus 6 Bamboo back and it's thickness, than these pieces are thinner which means more flexibility and better adhering. In addition, the corners are slightly beveled to lessen any sharpness while holding the device.
Not a photographer, but delighted to help.
