As soon as i get any sony phone out of the box i remove the factory fitted screen protecter.
The screen looks better without it, the screen is tougher than the protector so always looks better as it does not get scratched.
I keep my phone in mypocket with car keys and loose change, my screen has not a single scratch on it, but the screen protectoer always gets scratched and attracts dust....Its my one and only complaint about the phones

¿How about the finger oil the girl talks about?. It seems the bare screen is much harder to keep acceptably clean.
I aint taking mine off.
And i put the provided screen protector on, still feels good.
.....might put another one on to protect the 2nd one

It's easier to keep clean than the screen protector, it's more responsive, collects less dust, and does not get scratched like the screen protector does.
If you do it, you won't go back to using one

Each to their own, I can only share my experiences and opinions with you, however my wife did that to her T when she got it and IMHO made the screen dim, was less responsive and attracted dust a lot

I don't like or use screen protectors either, that's why I'm interested in taking it off or not.
However the thing that worries me is how "oily" it remained when the girl removed it.
Right now it certainly attracts dust like crazy, but a quick rub with my sleeve and it's clean again. In the video however seems that the bare crystal is not so easy to clean off.

My Xperia T was not "oily" at all when I removed the screen protector. It was perfect. Just get comfortable while trying to make the first peel, because it may send you nuts.
I started from the narrow strip above the earpiece hole, used a stitch needle to weaken the protector plastic (the glass won't get any scratches from it) and then managed to lift it off the surface... it then came away easily.
Without the screen protector, I don't have dust on it anymore (i think it's electrostatically attracted by the protector). It is more oily, for sure, but the oil makes your finger slip better on the screen, and I like that.

Same for me.
I removed it 3 seconds using a needle then peeled it off, cleaned with dishwasher rinse aid (innovative alternative for proper glass cleaner) on a micro-fibre cloth.
Screen is so much better. Crisper, less dust and I'm not really getting finger print marks; same as with protector.
Glad I took it off and did the same with my X10. You do wonder though why Sony don't use top grade glass on most of their phones. Strange.
I happen to like the feeling of the screen protector it's super ultra smooth but sadly as we all know super easy to scratch I think mine retained it's scratched from a little bit of pocket lint and some bubble gum rappers kinda makes you think WTF Sony WTF any how it doesn't look like she truly cleaned the screen proper and what we all want to know is what the phone is really like with out the glued on screen protector ?
What is it made of is it any thing like my Xperia arc which doesn't feel so great after I use it with my dirty work hands but if actually clean it feels alright.

I have to say that the built-on proctector does not feel good to me. My finger could not glide well at all. For the moment I have put the thinnest screen protector I had for the T and that has made a world of difference.
Just a question. If Sony use some kind of shatter-proof glass (Corning's gorrilla or Asahi Dragontail (don't they make beer too?)) why do they stick a thick sheet on top. Makes me think it is not very shatter proof!

Most Gorilla glass customers state they are using it, the same way they tell you the manufacturer of the processor.
The white paper for the xperia T that came out in Sept.(ver 3) just says:
"Shatter-proof sheet on scratch-resistant glass"

After noticing that the screen protector on my V was literally covered with probably 100+ microscratches from being in my pocket all the time, I went ahead and took it off. The screen looks much better now, but gets much greasier than before. No big deal, it's just like my old phone. What I really don't like, however, is that I lost my Sony logo, as it was printed on the screen protector and not the handset itself.

You may be right, the post at Sony Mobile were a Sony guy states it is Gorilla Glass, has been deleted.
Emailed Corning but they can't disclose info because of a privacy clause.

Well Sony make a distinction between the two.
"Shatter-proof sheet on scratch-resistant glass"
I did not like the sheet, so I stuck a proctector on top that that feels much better.

I've been wondering about this for a little while - is there a point in having my screen protector on since the XT720 has Gorilla glass? The SGP case I bought came with a screen protector so I just put it on. Is there actually any benefit considering Gorilla glass is unscratchable/ virtually indestructible? The screen protector doesn't really annoy me or anything, I'm just curious if the screen is a little brighter/better without it on and if there's actually any point at all for me to have it on or I should just take the screen protector off.
Also, the case came with a little screen cover for the camera shutter, this one I've thought is probably more useful since the camera doesn't have gorilla glass. Or does it and this screen cover is also pointless?
I do use one and I don't think it does any harm. I guess it would depend on whether you think the device warranty covers scratches to the screen (which I haven't looked into but I highly doubt).
A long time ago when I upgraded from a Palm Pilot to a Palm III, I went through a similar doubting phase about screen protectors since the III was advertised to be the latest and greatest in scratch resistant at the time, etc. Unfortunately it scratched within a month after my keys managed to slide between the flip cover and gouge a huge slash in the middle of the screen. Of course that sort of damage wasn't covered by the fine print of the warranty. An ounce of prevention is less annoying than a huge gash in the middle of your screen. At least that's where I am.
I'd be happy to scratch the hell out of someone else's screen to test it, though. I wonder if Best Buy frowns on bringing nails into the store...

I say keep the protector if it doesn't bug you.
I had an invisible shield from Zagg and it soon bugged me and I took it off.
That being said gorilla glass IS NOT impossible to scratch, in the light mine shows quite a few minor scratches now.
I scratched my screen. so better safe than sorry

Confirmed! It is possible to scratch it - I can see it everytime I look on it ...
Well some day i take off the original protector (the new one) and i like it moore, i like the touch of my finger with the screen but after arround 3 weeks i notice a 2 little scratches... i just bought a Invisible shield and it's pretty ok. I don't have another option, i think.

I had a martin fields protector on my desire for a year, there expensive but worth the money. You can't tell it's there, but they do scuff up and scratch.

When I bought my phone,I ordered a full InvisibleShield from mobileden.co.uk for 20 pounds. It has been about 3 months and nothing arrived,they are not responding to emails and my screen has been scratched more that a lottery ticked in a retirement home...

Ya there's a film over your screen stock and it picks up every scratch under the sun. The screen itself is very hard to scratch, you can take your car keys and try to scratch it nothing well happen. But ya take of that film it's a scratch magnet.

I think there already is a screen protector preinstalled, i didn't noticited it. I think that's the reason why it's so hard to put another screen protector on it.

There's actually one under that, it's got a great fit to it and you can't even tell it's there. If you look where the buttons meet the glass you can see there's a film on the screen. It's not really a screen protector it's a film they put on to prevent the screen from shattering if you dropped your phone kind of like safety glass in your car windshield it will still break but it doesn't let the glass fly. The problem with it is it's super soft so it picks up a ton of scratches. I recommend removing it and if you want apply a real screen protector that won't pick up scratches. Like I said it isn't really a screen protector just a soft piece of thin vinyl that scratches like crazy. To get it off get a pin or tack and pick away at it by the search button and once you get it lifted a little you can just peal it off with no problem. The mineral glass underneath is pretty dang scratch resistant but once that crappy film is off you can apply a proper protector with ease. Hope that helps some

Here is what it looks like when removing the factory vinyl. I had to use a thumb tack to get it started. I pushed down hard on it to get it started, and it did not harm the glass, but the vinyl scratches easily.
Edit: ack, the camera really captures the lint. I will say the colors are much more vibrant with that vinyl off. I should have taken a before and after pic of that.

Been wondering about this as my screen has got a couple of annoying scratches on it. Good to know the actual screen is much more resistant

I hate the Zagg "invisible" (quite the opposite) shields. The material is so uncomfortable I would take scratches on the screen instead every day of the week. Those shields are soft plastic of some sort and the fingers almost gets stuck on them while swiping (lots of friction). No smooth movement because of that and the image gets a lot more distorted than with the original screen protector on.
I really like the original screen protector as you can hardly tell it's there and it feels good on the finger. I regreted I ever removed mine and bought new original ones and am a happy camper again. They protect against speckles very well too which the Zagg ones doesn't do either. The Zagg shields are the most uncomfortable ones I have ever used and it's hard to get it on without getting bubbles and leftovers from the liquid that distorts the image even more.
I think it's the shatter proof one that's picking up most my scratches. Can somebody post a video of peeling it off? I see a very thin line with less than a millimeter gap between the phone edge and this protector. Can somebody confirm that it's the protector I'm looking at?

I am not sure why people still use screen protectors on today's high end devices especially phones like the Galaxy Note II with the enhanced toughened glass it has. Not only do they look terrible, they cause problems. See the numerous video uploads of people trying to scratch the glass for proof of how tough it is.
The Galaxy Note II has an extra issue with screen protectors in that it obviously uses an S-Pen detection layer.
I have just read the official manual for it and it clearly states NOT to use one as it causes sensor malfunctions. See attached clipping:

This is very true with the invent of gorilla glass I have personally tried acracthing screens with no success I have even gone to the point of using an extremely sharp knife and dragging the point across the screen, he screen protectors are only really good for keeping fingerprints off screen ans if you are worried about that you really have no business having a touch screen and yes the cause many problems

ya let me see you go to the beach and somehow manage to get some sand accidently on ur phone like i did when i tucked my phone in my bag which happened to have caught some sand from playing arnd..........do that and then come back here and tell us what u think of screen protectors......
I think the massage for sensor error is not for s-pen. but maybe for brightness or gesture hand on the top of the sensor.
I'll test it when it arrives.
But gorila glass or not... every phone i had got scratched, and if it was made with diamond glass .- it would scratch...

I get AMAZED when people vouch for screen protectors like they are invincible ARMOR which protects the screen from all possible damage like that from Sand all keep talking about.
Is it so that sand will not scratch the screen protector but will the screen? Or is it that we feel that even if it does scratch the screen protector, it will miraculously save the screen? Both this conditions seems quite ambiguous and UNBELIEVABLE to me unless I see a proof that screen protectors ACTUALLY save the screen even when scratched through Sand or Diamond or whatever!
I would appreciate enlightenment through fellow members on this and more thoughts accordingly.
This really annoys me.
Gorilla Glass SRATCHES. It may not be a huge scratch but you will always get light scratches which only show up when you inspect the screen closely and I HATE those more because you can be so careful with the phone and then find some tiny dust particle you couldn't even see has made a mark on your display. I hate it.
Screen protectors get Scratched. They will get more scratches than the glass because they are softer but the screen will be perfect underneath.
And when it's really dirty ill just change the protector.
I agree that the protectors won't stop something seriously sharp like metal going through but if you take care with the phone and use a protector then the phone will be perfect for as long as you have it.
And incidentally I have a GLAS.T SGP protector on my iPhone 5. It's glass so it won't scratch easily, and yes it will pick up light scratches but again underneath its perfect.
That's why I use them.

Why is this confusing to you? If you cover something, and the cover is scratched, then you can just change the cover. If your protector is pierced, then of course no go, but I suspect your screen is still damaged. Scratches are typically not deep.

I have a Spigen Crystal Clear protector on my Note II
So far after a days use i have found NO problems with having the protector on.
I will keep this thread informed if I run into any problems.

My question is more related to the THICKNESS of those screen protectors. How does a less than 1mm thin plastic skin protect whats beneath. Wouldn't it scratch the screen anyway when it is exposed to sand and hard metal which can scratch Gorilla glass?
I get extremely annoyed when the screen protectors themselves may get easily scratched even while putting on the screen. I have used SGP Ultra Fine on my SGS2 for few weeks and while I loved the way my fingers used to glide over them with hardly any smearing compared to the original Gorilla glass screen, I could not tolerate the numerous scratches it got despite careful use and hence had to remove it to avoid the distraction and recover the outstanding display beneath. I hate spoiling the display for such hypothetical situation where we believe that the protector can actually protect the screen as I anyway never had any scratch on my SGS1 and only recently noticed couple of them on my SGS2 which may have come during a visit to the service center and am still okay with the screen without the protector as otherwise the screen is still flawless and those scratches are invisible unless specifically searched at an angle with strong light (like sunlight) comes through a specific angle.
I think people are missing the point here, my original post made reference to the Samsung manual for this device which clearly tells you not to use one as it causes malfunctions.
The negatives outway the positives in that, they alter functionality of the phone as stated by Samsung, they spoil the appearance of your phone with bubbles and mis-alignment, they are not going to save the screen from heavy scratches anyway and the only people that really benefit are companies that sell them.
If you use one and you are happy with that then all well and good. But personally I find if you take care of your phone and use a good case as I have done for years you simply won't need a protector.
I used one for months on a first gen Note, no problems at all; I can't imagine why it would cause any problems. And the reason I installed one is because before I installed it, a small bit of dust caused a noticable scratch on the glass. As for appearance issues, if you take your time and install a decent quality one, you won't notice it at all, and I tend to prefer the feel of a protected screen over glass now. Having used a few protectors over the years, it's hard to imagine what you'd be doing that could penetrate a protector, short of attacking it with a Stanley knife, in which case your screen is the least of your worries. They're designed to take minor scuffs, and since this is a stylus orientated device, I'd be worried about dragging plastic over it without some protection.
I am on day 3 with my protector on my Note II and no problems.
Pen works perfectly. Pressure also works perfectly.
I want to know about this as I plan to draw a lot on my galaxy note and I am known to be quite "expressive". I don't want to scratch up my screen from doing digital paintings, that's why I want a screen protector :/

I'm still not sure what they meant by malfunction....is this a long term malfunction or short tern while the screen protector is on?

The bottom line is your screen will probably end up with a minor scratch after a year of use. So do you put some cheap plastic/rubber film on it and never enjoy the brilliant screen? Or do you enjoy it for all it's glory and deal with scratches if they happen?
The Note 2 comes with the best screen protector already. It is called Gorilla Glass 2. Why put a 10 cent (sold to you for $40) piece of crap on it?

There are great protectors out there that are very clear and looks almost like as if nothing is on it

Unless your screen protector is magnetic, it's not going to cause malfunctions.
You can put a piece of cardboard on top of your screen and it doesn't affect the stylus. Seriously. Try it.
The only way you are going to induce scratches is if your protector is made out of sand or something, or you trap sand or whatever under it.
I didn't use screen protectors with my galaxy note until I got a small scratch on the screen.
There is also a nice degree of comfort knowing your screen is protected. If you get something on the screen - dirt, oil, whatever.
Worst case scenario is you just get a new protector. (versus a new screen).
Do I really NEED one? Perhaps not. But I do anyway.

I've installed the in the box screen protector, it will do its job but its cut the same size as the shatter protector so was a nightmare to align without it going off one side but not the other. The application was the hardest of any I've ever applied as the shatter protector attracts dust like a magnet! The edges are already picking up dust so I'm on the lookout for a replacement.
I've got some Terrapin ones from Amazon...anyone tried these yet?

they are a like a foil and very hard to apply indeed. Ended up with a lot of bubbles but was able to get rid of most of them, only with few where the dust particles settled.
It is very clear and leaves the screen smooth to use. Also they only have the cut for the front cam and does cover the sensor areas whereas the terrapin ones seem not to cover the sensors as well. Ordered a terrapin pack too off Ebay as a comparison.
The Terrapin ones I ordered from Amazon just arrived today (I bought the 10-in-1 pack) and they seem very good so far - the screen no longer attracts dust like a moth to a flame. It was a bit difficult to apply at first (it took me 3 attempts) but I finally got it nice and smooth with only a few bubbles around the edges where I think it lost it's stickiness due to me trying to peel it off again to reapply.
At the price of 10 for £3.49 I'm quite happy with these,

Doesn't the phone come with a factory screen protector? Mine looks like it has one. I received a screen protector with my Incipio case, but didn't put it on since it looked like mine had one already. Didn't know if that would affect the screen sensitivity.
I think the phone come with a preinstalled anti-shattering film. (but it's a little confusing since there is no mention to that in the manual or box)
It can act as a screen protector too, but you can put another one above if you want to keep it in mint condition.

Yes, all xperia phones (Correct me if i am wrong) come with a factory fitted protector. And the first thing you should do is take it off and dont bother with them
IMO the protctors get sctatched very easilly and atract dust, whist the bare screen is very durable and looks cleaner.
I dont use a case and keep my phone in my pocket with car keys, house keys and loose change. The screen never gets scratched. And I have done that on my x10, my neo and now my T.
Disclaimer, if you take the protector off and then drop a working diamond tipped drill onto it and it scratches the screen, thats not my fault
So you think the factory installed "supposedly shatter-proof film" is meant to be removed before use (if you didnt like it) ?
like on my xperia s e my tablet s , i took it off on my XT and is so smooth ... the glass feel is 100times better then the plastic and the screen is sharper .. the screen protector preinstalled is so thick...

I'm glad you mentioned this. Has your Xperia T attracted particles underneath the camera or the gap between the display and corners while in your pocket? It may be too early to tell, but it seems all phones are prone with the issue.

so the issue I have is the feel of the screen with the think layer on it (not the free protector in the box or the other you can buy and apply).
So I too would be tempted to peel, but who else has done this.
Glass would indeed feel better.

I've never used screen protector on mine. Only irritating thing is that it's quite prone to getting smudged by skin fat, that means the oleophobic coating of the screen surface could be better, maybe the only reason that I would put a screen protector on my 3t.
The screen protector definitely makes a big difference in durability and scratch-resistance, but after time with a case it kinda messes up the protector. I like using my phone without one.

ive got a few hair thin scratches on my screen so i wouldnt say that the glass is superb but it holds up against some abrasion. I just wouldnt put your keys in the same pocket as your phone.
This screen is definitely not scratch resistant. 4 months of usage and I've got one nice scratch down the middle and some superficial scratches towards the top corners. Phone has never been in a case, just keep it in a leather holster
Whether the glass is classified as "scratch resistant" is a semantic and marketing distinction. To answer "yes" or "no" to this (whether it is "really" scratch resistant) doesn't mean much of anything. Gorilla Glass is meant to resist some scratches. But that doesn't mean it can't be scratched (and far from it). And that doesn't account for oleophobic coating applied to it, which can also scratch.
For every person who says they never have gotten a scratch, you will find another person that scratched theirs in days/weeks. My other (work) phone is an iPhone (also Gorilla Glass). I'm admittedly not too gentle with it, and it got a big gouge on the screen the first week or so after I received it.
Whether to use a screen protector or not, comes down to a personal choice. Many folks don't like the feel or hassle of a protector. But if you don't use one, you will have to live with the potential of at least superficial scuffs, or even deeper scratches.

Keys cant damage gorilla glass unless they are made of diamond or any material which is harder or equally hard as gorilla glass, sand, concrete, diamond can scratch screen easily.. it doesnt matter how sharp the object is but how hard it is

Its not keys.. your pocket probably has dust inside with particles of material which is harder than ur screen

The Corning Gorilla Glass 4 is indeed 'Scratch-Proof' under normal usage in urban daily life, but still it cannot stand the IMPACT force when it drop to the ground, so get a TEMPERED GLASS Screen protector. If u still feel sick of using it, then spend some bucks to buy RhinoShield CrashGuard along with some DBrand skins ? !

While GG may be hard to scratch, it doesn't account for the oleophobic coating, which is much easier to scratch. To the user, it doesn't matter which scratches (the glass or the coating). A scratch is a scratch.
Scientifically you are correct. For that matter, you can't even scratch a regular glass beer bottle with a key (go ahead and try, I have) since the Moh's hardness of glass is 5.5 , and steel is only around 4.

Everyone (not just you, but others on the thread, including the original poster) should stop thinking about terms like "scratch resistant" and "scratch proof" as absolute yes/no things, since they aren't. There is no technical or scientific definition for these terms. Nothing is scratch proof, even a diamond can scratch a diamond. And I know you qualified it with "normal usage" but that term itself is completely subjective. Many folks wear diamond rings on their hands on a normal daily basis, after all.
Similar to the term "water proof" which doesn't really mean anything by itself. That is why things like IP ratings (which define specific water depth/pressure and exposure times) have been developed to better define water resistance/water proofness.
And as I already mentioned above, even if the glass was "scratch proof" (if there was such a thing), it would be irrelevant, since they've put a coating on top of the glass, that can be scratched.

I dont think there would be any visible damage to our eyes if oleophobic coating was scratched.. i'd feel its as easy to scratch as paint from metal or wall or wood so if you would be able to see oleophobic scratches my phone would already look like a scratch hell

It may be why folks are seeing superficial scuffs on the screen.
I've definitely seen oleophobic (or some other type of coating) get scratched on other devices. On my old HTC M8, it was reported by many users (myself included) that the coating on the back camera was getting scratched and peeling to the point that it clouded the photos. Removing the coating (various methods, most used alcohol, toothpaste, or some other mild solvent or abrasive) and the glass underneath was just fine (no scratches). This is probably a "worst case" example where the coating was particularly low quality. And just the camera glass, not the screen. But an example, nonetheless.

I took it off from day one, and have regretted it ever since. I haven't dropped the phone nor put it in a pocket with anything else, yet I have two scratches... A light one in the top left corner of the phone and a deeper one I can feel with my nail in the centre. Not sure how but yeah...
So I'd keep it on if I were you.

There is no anti-scratch phone, If you care for your phone you'll need a screen protector,PERIOD.

Yeah, I got a bit overconfident after watching JerryRigEverythings videos and took it off. A few months later I'm ordering a pack of screen protectors off Amazon and looking at maybe replacing the screen.
I still hope they are just in the oleophobic coating but doesn't seem likely. At least for the second one. And it's not really worth the risk of removing the coating to find out.
The 3T screen is pretty soft. I've owned this phone twice ([emoji38]), and both times just sliding in my pocket has created small scratches. The small scratches that you can only see, if you angle the phone in light, not a biggie, but if you have OCD..it will bug the heck out of you. Also if you ever sell, just know most OnePlus 3T screens will trend towards "good" vs mint.

The hair thin scratches are usually in oleophobic coating and not in glass, so yeah it's definitely visible.
