Do not use a screen protector! - Galaxy Note II Accessories

I am not sure why people still use screen protectors on today's high end devices especially phones like the Galaxy Note II with the enhanced toughened glass it has. Not only do they look terrible, they cause problems. See the numerous video uploads of people trying to scratch the glass for proof of how tough it is.
The Galaxy Note II has an extra issue with screen protectors in that it obviously uses an S-Pen detection layer.
I have just read the official manual for it and it clearly states NOT to use one as it causes sensor malfunctions. See attached clipping:

This is very true with the invent of gorilla glass I have personally tried acracthing screens with no success I have even gone to the point of using an extremely sharp knife and dragging the point across the screen, he screen protectors are only really good for keeping fingerprints off screen ans if you are worried about that you really have no business having a touch screen and yes the cause many problems

Any ideas what they meant by sensor malfunction? Inaccuracy of S pen? Is it a temporal or permanent malfunction?

ya let me see you go to the beach and somehow manage to get some sand accidently on ur phone like i did when i tucked my phone in my bag which happened to have caught some sand from playing arnd..........do that and then come back here and tell us what u think of screen protectors......

I think the massage for sensor error is not for s-pen. but maybe for brightness or gesture hand on the top of the sensor.
I'll test it when it arrives.
But gorila glass or not... every phone i had got scratched, and if it was made with diamond glass .- it would scratch...
F..it - I'll use the screen protector. (bestskinsever has the best one for me.. I just emailed them when will they get one for NOTE II.

I get AMAZED when people vouch for screen protectors like they are invincible ARMOR which protects the screen from all possible damage like that from Sand all keep talking about.
Is it so that sand will not scratch the screen protector but will the screen? Or is it that we feel that even if it does scratch the screen protector, it will miraculously save the screen? Both this conditions seems quite ambiguous and UNBELIEVABLE to me unless I see a proof that screen protectors ACTUALLY save the screen even when scratched through Sand or Diamond or whatever!
I would appreciate enlightenment through fellow members on this and more thoughts accordingly.

This really annoys me.
Gorilla Glass SRATCHES. It may not be a huge scratch but you will always get light scratches which only show up when you inspect the screen closely and I HATE those more because you can be so careful with the phone and then find some tiny dust particle you couldn't even see has made a mark on your display. I hate it.
Screen protectors get Scratched. They will get more scratches than the glass because they are softer but the screen will be perfect underneath.
And when it's really dirty ill just change the protector.
I agree that the protectors won't stop something seriously sharp like metal going through but if you take care with the phone and use a protector then the phone will be perfect for as long as you have it.
And incidentally I have a GLAS.T SGP protector on my iPhone 5. It's glass so it won't scratch easily, and yes it will pick up light scratches but again underneath its perfect.
That's why I use them.

Why is this confusing to you? If you cover something, and the cover is scratched, then you can just change the cover. If your protector is pierced, then of course no go, but I suspect your screen is still damaged. Scratches are typically not deep.

So far after a days use i have found NO problems with having the protector on.
I will keep this thread informed if I run into any problems.

My question is more related to the THICKNESS of those screen protectors. How does a less than 1mm thin plastic skin protect whats beneath. Wouldn't it scratch the screen anyway when it is exposed to sand and hard metal which can scratch Gorilla glass?
I get extremely annoyed when the screen protectors themselves may get easily scratched even while putting on the screen. I have used SGP Ultra Fine on my SGS2 for few weeks and while I loved the way my fingers used to glide over them with hardly any smearing compared to the original Gorilla glass screen, I could not tolerate the numerous scratches it got despite careful use and hence had to remove it to avoid the distraction and recover the outstanding display beneath. I hate spoiling the display for such hypothetical situation where we believe that the protector can actually protect the screen as I anyway never had any scratch on my SGS1 and only recently noticed couple of them on my SGS2 which may have come during a visit to the service center and am still okay with the screen without the protector as otherwise the screen is still flawless and those scratches are invisible unless specifically searched at an angle with strong light (like sunlight) comes through a specific angle.

I think people are missing the point here, my original post made reference to the Samsung manual for this device which clearly tells you not to use one as it causes malfunctions.
The negatives outway the positives in that, they alter functionality of the phone as stated by Samsung, they spoil the appearance of your phone with bubbles and mis-alignment, they are not going to save the screen from heavy scratches anyway and the only people that really benefit are companies that sell them.
If you use one and you are happy with that then all well and good. But personally I find if you take care of your phone and use a good case as I have done for years you simply won't need a protector.

I used one for months on a first gen Note, no problems at all; I can't imagine why it would cause any problems. And the reason I installed one is because before I installed it, a small bit of dust caused a noticable scratch on the glass. As for appearance issues, if you take your time and install a decent quality one, you won't notice it at all, and I tend to prefer the feel of a protected screen over glass now. Having used a few protectors over the years, it's hard to imagine what you'd be doing that could penetrate a protector, short of attacking it with a Stanley knife, in which case your screen is the least of your worries. They're designed to take minor scuffs, and since this is a stylus orientated device, I'd be worried about dragging plastic over it without some protection.

I am on day 3 with my protector on my Note II and no problems.
Pen works perfectly. Pressure also works perfectly.

I want to know about this as I plan to draw a lot on my galaxy note and I am known to be quite "expressive". I don't want to scratch up my screen from doing digital paintings, that's why I want a screen protector :/

The bottom line is your screen will probably end up with a minor scratch after a year of use. So do you put some cheap plastic/rubber film on it and never enjoy the brilliant screen? Or do you enjoy it for all it's glory and deal with scratches if they happen?
The Note 2 comes with the best screen protector already. It is called Gorilla Glass 2. Why put a 10 cent (sold to you for $40) piece of crap on it?

Unless your screen protector is magnetic, it's not going to cause malfunctions.
You can put a piece of cardboard on top of your screen and it doesn't affect the stylus. Seriously. Try it.
The only way you are going to induce scratches is if your protector is made out of sand or something, or you trap sand or whatever under it.
I didn't use screen protectors with my galaxy note until I got a small scratch on the screen.
There is also a nice degree of comfort knowing your screen is protected. If you get something on the screen - dirt, oil, whatever.
Worst case scenario is you just get a new protector. (versus a new screen).
Do I really NEED one? Perhaps not. But I do anyway.

[Q] Gorilla glass on O2x/G2x?

I am looking to get one of these unlocked and use it on At&t, and so far the phone looks great in reviews. But I have one quick question, does it have gorilla glass?
After not having to rock a screen protector on my galaxy s, I love gorilla glass.
Yes it does. But as always, it is only scratch assistance, not scratch proof.

Your meaning scratch resistance? Anyway, i heard some where it can not be scratch by metal but can be scratch by sand due to its cristalite characteristic.
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA App
pretty much, I don't have any scratches so far, except one teeny tiny pick at one of the edges. It is definately not scratch proof (as in, you should use at least a bag for your pockets) but if you give it a minimum amount of thought, you can remain scratch free.

In a way yes, but i never seen anyone tried to scratch his/her 2X using stones or rocks.
But it made sense because people commonly kept keys in their pocket, hence scratch assistance to metal.

The big thing with gorilla glass for me is not so much just the scratch resistance but the shatter resistance of said glass - my Captivate survived many a drop and only recently suffered a scuff on the top right of the glass (it slid across concrete) and I've had it since November and dropped it who knows how many times (its a really light and thin phone though, which this is not, so I should be able to grip it better).
Gorilla Glass is both scratch and shatter-resistant. Example. Bowling ball falls on phone's screen - glass will definitely crack but unless it was a severe drop (I believe they say that 1/4mm thick G.G. will survive a 10 pound pressure drop up to 5 feet or so without shattering), the glass will just splinter across the screen.
Be careful. Gorilla glass was made to resist better to pressure, not scratch in the first place.
There is only ONE physic law interesting here : a harder elemt will scratch another one.
Hardness is usually measured in Vickers. It's easy, as said before, just compare to elements' positions on the Vickers scale. The higher will scratch the lower.
Glass is around 550 VH, Gorilla around 674 and... sand is around 1000 VH.
So yeah, your metal keys won't scratch it (key's metal is around 300 VH) but sand will ! As much as other minerals (quartz...). I took the sand exemple just because it's very common.
Remeber that Gorilla glass is far from being invicible. Sand is hardess, ergo stronger in that case ^^
Agreed. This is why my phone got a nice round scuff on it when it slid across the concrete.
However, had it been an iPhone 2G, it would have shattered on contact. That's one major point that has to be made.
I never used a screen protector on my EVO, my Galaxy S (Captivate), and I am not currently using one on my Inspire or myTouch4G and don't plan to use one on my G2x. In fact, I actually haven't used screen protectors since I got annoyed with the stupid Invisible Shield tackiness making it even more of a pain on my Touch Pro 2 (resistive) when trying to operate it.
Does the gorilla screen protect against fingerprint smudges or anti glare. If not can someone point me in the direction for THE BEST screen protector to accomplish this.

It does not do either of those things unless it is given a special coating to prevent them - honestly, no matter what screen protector you use, you're going to lose sensitivity on a capacitive screen which means more taps. Just carry around a microfiber cloth if you're worried about smudges but I've found over time, the oils spread across the phone's screen and you don't even really notice it anymore. This has been the case with my Zune HD (Gorilla), EVO (Gorilla), Inspire (Gorilla), and myTouch4G (Gorilla as well).

Yeah I figured as much. Not a big deal because i wear glasses so I always have a microfiber cloth close by. So will I be able to see clearly in direct sunlight with the G2X. I have a N1 and I have to turn brightness setting all the way up during daytime/outside just to see what I'm doing. Do you think I will have this problem again

From what I've been reading about IPS technology, it should be quite bright even on the lowest setting. I've left all my phones on auto brightness and couldn't even read a S-AMOLED in direct sunlight - still gotta shade it. Its not a huge deal though. I wear glasses too and if I put sunglasses on, I can usually read my phone in direct sunlight.

LOL! How can you say it hasn't affected your usability when you still have it on there? I left mine on the myTouch4G initially because I didn't have plans to keep it and didn't want to risk anything... taps were missed occasionally so I took it off - now its almost as responsive as the Inspire (admittedly THE most sensitive screen I've ever used).
did you just say MYtouch4G has Gorilla also, are we sure? I've seen so many of them broken.
My mom dropped her MT4G one time and it shattered completely. might be that unlucky way it landed, but a few devs from here had the same issue. I've dropped the G2, and my Nexus One many, many of times and never had it break. I've dropped my Nexus One TONS and it never got a scratch.
My G2x will be here Monday, I'm wondering if the curved glass will make it less likely to break if lands face down, or more likely to.
just for peace of mind I'd get a good quaility screen protector, doesn't affect responsiveness too much.

Do you use a screen protector?

I've been wondering about this for a little while - is there a point in having my screen protector on since the XT720 has Gorilla glass? The SGP case I bought came with a screen protector so I just put it on. Is there actually any benefit considering Gorilla glass is unscratchable/ virtually indestructible? The screen protector doesn't really annoy me or anything, I'm just curious if the screen is a little brighter/better without it on and if there's actually any point at all for me to have it on or I should just take the screen protector off.
Also, the case came with a little screen cover for the camera shutter, this one I've thought is probably more useful since the camera doesn't have gorilla glass. Or does it and this screen cover is also pointless?
I do use one and I don't think it does any harm. I guess it would depend on whether you think the device warranty covers scratches to the screen (which I haven't looked into but I highly doubt).
A long time ago when I upgraded from a Palm Pilot to a Palm III, I went through a similar doubting phase about screen protectors since the III was advertised to be the latest and greatest in scratch resistant at the time, etc. Unfortunately it scratched within a month after my keys managed to slide between the flip cover and gouge a huge slash in the middle of the screen. Of course that sort of damage wasn't covered by the fine print of the warranty. An ounce of prevention is less annoying than a huge gash in the middle of your screen. At least that's where I am.
I'd be happy to scratch the hell out of someone else's screen to test it, though. I wonder if Best Buy frowns on bringing nails into the store...

Should I buy a screen protector?

Is it even worth investing on a screen protector because I know this glass is reinforced though weaker by comparison when compared to other reinforced glass...I don't know because I don't want the sensitivity to go away from touch and pen interactions. Also I'm afraid that if I put it on and remove it, it'll leave a sticky residue - does anyone who has had experienced with removing screen protectors and receiving some sort of sticky stuff on the screen?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
Personally I would always use a screen protector, but I'm OCD about keeping my phones in good condition. No real loss of feeling on input, with either finger or s-pen, just make sure to get a decent brand like 'expert shield', not the 4 pack cheapies. A good quality screen protector doesn't leave any residue behind when you remove it.
If you want to feel the touch on the screen like me then you dont have to buy it

I dont think so, but it is DEFINITELY worth searching the forum before posting another thread about screen protectors.
I had a cover on mine but removed it as it wasnt a great fit (£10 so not exactly cheap) Sods law dictated that I got a scratch shortly after somehow and I am still not sure where it happened as the unit is always in my pocket away from coins and other possible causes. It is only visible when the screen is off though thankfully and doesnt detract form its functionality but I know it is there.
Applying screen protector has always been the first thing I do when getting a new gadget. Despite the marketing claim, I find gorilla glass (Moh's scale 6 or 7) still prone to scratch. especially lighter scratches.
Most protectors doesn't alter experience when using your finger. But some are rather "slippery" when using S-Pen. I say at least buy one that has Oleophobic coating as it will less likely to attract finger print.
Those soft screen protectors will only protect your phone against lighter scratch. If you use your phone in any harsh environment, install one of those plexiglass protector.

Advantages and disadvantages of screen protector

Are there any advantages or disadvantages by putting screen protector on my galaxy ace. Heard that som epeople put them, and after they removed it, there stayed permanent damages.
I use a screen protector and have no issues. They used to effect the touchscreen, but newer capactive touch screens have no issues. They protect my screen from a lot of scratches.
A word of advice: buy the more expensive ones - their thicker and leave less bubbles.
When putting one on, do it from the longest edge. You'll be able to line it up better.
Sent from my GT-S5830 using Tapatalk 2
theres no real disadvantages. They tend to get grubbier than the screen would, but you dont get scratches (theres a lot of debate over wether the ace has gorilla glass, many sources say it does, but equally many, including samsung say it doesnt).
Advantages, well, saves scratches and once every month or so you change it and get to have a whole new phone all over again.
i actually tend to go with the short side first (generally starting at the button edge) and working up with a credit card.
i just buy a new rubberised case/screenprotector/stylus combi on ebay once a month.. keeps my phone pristine so when it comes to upgrade i can still get a decent price.
but anyway, there will be those that show you youtube videos of people attacking an ace with keys and not scratching, there will be others you tell you their screen got scratched while it was in their pocket.
I cant think of a valid argument for having one. If the girls says shes on the pill, you still wear a condom
personally have one original from Samsung for SGA from retailer since i bought my phone.. it feels pretty good to have a good protector screen remains smooth and no scratches at all.. actually my phone after cleaning dirt looks like just unboxed even after 9 months fell 2-3 times but nothing happened anywhere
The way I look at it is that if you don't mean to beat your phone up, you shouldn't need a screen protector. The galaxy ace comes with gorilla glass and mine hasn't been scratched since I got it in November. I've accidentally dropped it screen down a few times too.
Either way its your choice. Just my 2 cents

theres a lot of confusion over gorilla glass, samsung dont say it has, gorilla glass says it does.
But, worth remembering. Gorillla glass is SCRATCH RESISTANT, not scratch proof.
For the sake of a couple of dollars, why not have a protector anyway.

Well I see your point there. So yeah, it's not a bad investment. I just wish I could find a mirrored one But you're right, in the long run it will probably be worth it. Just like a case, we don't mean to drop our phones, but it's definately a worth it
no brainer
If your phone gets a scratch without a protector then your gonna have to look at that scratch till upgrade time...............
If you phone gets a scratch with a screen protector then its easy to replace the flimsy bit of plastic
Just put it on and forget about it.
I have a plastic cover on my Ace's screen and it works like a charm. Screen is still brand new too. I actually stabbed my phone with a knife to see how good it was. The plastic has a hole but the screen is still epic
And its not even a hole, its just a little dot. The plastic barely gets scratched too. Its a win-win situation.

Knife your unprotected screen, there won't be a scratch either. Gorilla glass doesn't scratch easily.
The screen protector serves a more useful purpose at making the screen smoother, less reflective, and retain less fingerprints.

However, someone in the first page said to buy the more expensive ones, thats just a load of bull. Cheap ones from ebay work just as good. These screen protectors cost 0.1$ to manufacture so that's why they're able to make money even if they sell em cheap.
edit: 0.12$ to be more exact
I don't use any screen protector.
Glas don't scratches like the old touchscreens
which react react pressure.
As per my opinion there is not any disadvantage for using screen protector. It always protect your screen from scratches.
Why?
I'll never understand screen protector users. Our phone has Guerrilla Glass, designed so you DON'T need a screen protector, and it works. I've never had a screen protector on my Ace, or any of my phones for that matter, and none of my screens have scratches or marks.
My Ace Screen looks like it just came out of the box, and it has been dropped, and I have even tested the durability of the screen by trying to scratch it with a knife, keys, and sand paper... and it still looks brand new.
Screen protectors make the phone screen feel less slick and smooth, and they are difficult to put on and remove without air bubbles all while staying centered. You can't even force out most air bubbles with a credit card or flat edge. They also make the screen less responsive, although this isn't much of an issue with capacitive touch screens anymore, it still happens if your protector is too thick.
What are you doing that you need a protector? I carry my keys and stuff in one pocket and my phone in the other, and even if they are in the same pocket, none of my phones have ever been scratched by anything in my pocket...

Every ace is different some aces have the guerilla glass some don't.
I am one of those persons with a bad screen, it scratches too fast.

beyond frustrated please help with a screen protector see below..

I've tried plastic, wet install, and glass..... Glass was the best in terms of clarity but much more of a finger print magnet than the original glass underneath. And more reflective... The wet install one showed the spent marks.. At this rate I'll spend more on screen protectors than a replacement screen.... Please send your recommendations. Thanks
Lol. There are like 10 screen protector threads here already !

Feel your pain. I've done all what you have except for trying the glass ones.
Here is my experience. Get wet applied plastic one that is harder than the usual wet applied ones. A person on another thread recommend a Walmart Onn brand , I used it and it didn't leave S Pen marks at all. However, it was a ***** to fit correctly, so I being OCD I removed it and went back to the usual wet applied one again that does leave S Pen marks.
I believe Tech21 makes a screen protector similar in characteristics as the Walmart ONN one . Ain't tried that yet. But I can tell you that if the the Walmart ONN screen protector was applied correctly then I'd still be a fan.

So your criteria would be: best protection available without fingerprints, reflections, or s-pen marks? Might be tough without compromising a bit on one of those aspects. I've tried 2 cheap glass ones that I took off immediately, the Spigen film protectors that leave s-pen marks, and the Whitestone Dome which which was best for me of the bunch (no s-pen marks of course, and no fingerprint issues so far. Haven't paid attention to reflection issues as of yet). The new Zagg glass looks promising too...ymmv
I like Skinomi. You get some s pen marks but they go away overnight. I use the spen alot too, it's my preferred way to interact with the screen.
Go naked and live with it. I have been there, where you say to be and feel your pain. I just gave up and live with it. In case I really manage to break or badly scratch it, I will have to get a new one or live with it. All is better than the smudgy protectors giving a bad feeling to the touch and a bad view.

I'm so close to doing that but I live by the beach worried about scratches more than dropping it..

Beach and sand indeed is an issue. I do not live on the beach but was there last summer (S8+, no pen, easier situation) and was so glad to have a film protector on it.
Bite the bullet and get a Whitestone dome?
If I may offer an alternative suggestion? I did not even want to risk the screen protector lottery on this phone, so I took a different approach.
I have used a case with a built-in screen protector. I feel it gives me the best of both worlds; ultimate protection from drops and screen damage when out and about, and in a couple of seconds (when at home and the soft safety of my sofa), it can be out of its case and back to a slippery naked unblemished masterpiece.

Cons:
Minor reduction in finger sensitivity at the edges.
Adds significant bulk, especially in width making one-handed use impractical
Screen protector picks up scratches after a few months
Wearing polarised sunglasses makes screen hard to see (rainbow effect)
Be certain inside of screen cover is clear of grit before fitting
Pros:
Zero reduction in S Pen sensitivity.
Phone is tank-like. Has survived drops onto solid concrete no problem.
Screen protector can be popped out and used just as case if desired.
Dust caps for charging and headphone sockets
Easy to take off and have naked phone
It all balances out IMO. It might not be a perfect solution, but it is mine and I am happy with it.
I would advise against it, especially in a sandy environment. It WILL find a way in and then have a party with your screen. Also, in my personal opinion, this is way too bulky.
Personally, I am using a pitaka case. I am also having a thin, blank film on the back because ofscrarch protecting the back.
i'm using the official one for S8+ and it's very good, the s-pen does not leave any mark
I have used all types and found my favorite to be the tech21. No sensitivity issues, screen is clear, no spen marks, and decent with dealing with fingerprints. I couldn't use another after using this one.
Wouldn't it be just nice if Samsung offered a factory glass screen protector as an option when buying these devices. I'm sure they are aware of customers concerns - surely they have the technology to be able to do this, albeit probably not financially viable hence no go.
