Hey guys, I just took my screen protector off today because it was getting dirty. But im wondering, can I really just go without the screen protector? How reliable is the gorrilla glass on this thing? I wonder if Rogers even put gorilla glass on the captivate phones. Anyway, what are peoples experiences without using a screen protecotr?
I have never had an issue other than fingerprints.
I am careful though and do not put it in a pocket with anything metal.

Lol i dont get it, people are saying they do get screatchs from keys and some people dont. Anyway somehow I reached into my desk and discovered I had saved 2 extra screen protectors.....so i guess im gonna use them anyway.
I've dropped my phone and had it in my pocket with keys and coins. Just a cleaning with a cloth to clear finer prints and smudges and the screen looks brand new.

After almost 14 months use including dropping it on pavement several times (always find your phone before you get out of your truck ), throwing it in my front pocket with keys, etc., I have two or three tiny scratches that you have to look for.
Pretty impressed with the durability but I also consciously avoid doing the previously mentioned "oops" actions.
Never have used a screen protector, throw it into my pocket - "usually" without keys or coins. My screen looks the same as the day I brought it home - wonderful stuff this gorilla glass.

i have used the generic screen protectors, that are super cheap but dont cover the entire front of the screen just fits over the display area, i took that off a few days ago cause i realized the ares not covered (the top and bottom) are completely new looking. finger prints and smudges a a P.I.T.A. but the glass feels SOOO smooth compared to the protector...
btw this is a question...they usually go in the Q&A section....
I took scissors to my screen.. Pretty good, too.. Scratched that thing, and even heard some 'scratching' 'oh no, I musta scratched it' sounds while doing it.. It came out completely clean.
I have also dropped it from about 6 feet, having it land on a corner.. and all it did was put a dent in the corner.. (This happened a couple of times)
This phone is almost indestructible.
No screen protecter here and has been threw some crap and.looks.brand new...my sis had one but in my own opionion it took away from the badass display

I stopped using screen protectors on my cappy almost a year ago
I have one SLIGHT scratch that you really have to look for.
Don't set it on table tops screen faced down(that's just dumb)
Make it a rule of thumb to keep your phone in a pocket for itself with nothing else in it
Just take care of it, the rest takes care of itself.
I've had mine almost a year without a protector and it looks brand new. And I'm kinda hard on my phones.
Almost been a year now with no screen protector just some surface scratches but nothing major. As for screen protectors go i hate them. They collect dust and scratch super easily well worth it if you dont have a phone with gorilla glass but not worth it with the captivate.
Just wish they had made the body out of something else because it scratches real easy but a simple $1 case fixed that
Can't stand screen protectors. Have had no scratches yet. I work construction often digging trenches, and have pulled my phone our of my pocket that was full of sand and rocks. Still looks brand new.
I do use a body glove case because without it, I have a hard time holding the phone

Mine's naked too and it looks brand new. But there are scratches nevertheless. Micro ones that most lighting doesn't seem to reveal. It's weird but here in the office, I can't see any scratches at all. Good lighting. But when I use it at church, for some reason, the overhead lights show tons of scratches.

I generally throw it in the pocket opposite the one with my keys, but it does get thrown in with other stuff, like sunglasses, usb sticks, etc. Had it for over a year now and no scratches. Very resilient. Protectors definitely take away from the beauty of the screen, but it really depends on how hard you are on your phone.
No screen protector here. I somehow have a scratch on the screen though. Not sure how that happened but it isn't too noticeable and life goes on.
What type of material is the screen on the Vivid? HTC site doesn't yet address this.
Short of dragging a razor blade or my keys across my screen, is there some way to tell if it's Gorilla glass by looking at it or??
I was told by an AT&T rep that HTC no longer uses Gorilla Glass, and after doing some research it seems he may be right. Would like to hear from HTC or Corning though.
That's what the rep told me too. Thing is, I rarely find that the information from their reps to be accurate. I often know more than they do by just following the forums. So, although the rep may have been correct, I can't rely on the info too much.
I guess what I am really concerned about is the chances of my screen getting scratched if I don't put a screen protector on it.

Is it going to kill you if you spend and extra at most 15 dollars for one? Check out the screen protectors made by realook.
Many of us don't like screen protectors.

I can tell you that using the Vivid and Skyrocket side by side I hate the Vivid "glass". It's much less slick and your finger does not glide over it very well. The touchscreen also messes up from time to time. You will hit an icon, it "lights" up, but nothing happens. You have to press it a second time to get a reaction...but maybe that is an Android thing.

I've had that happen a few times as well. Might have to take it back for another one. I don't have an issue with the screen not being slick enough though.

I Like Screen Protectors
I have had no problem using screen protectors. The trick is finding a good quality one and getting it on the screen correctly. I can tell no problems with taps, swipes or multi-touch with the screen protector. And it has a matte finish so finger smudges don't show too much. I carry my phone in my pocket, so I don't want one of those huge boxes around it. I just don't see any sense risking scratches when I don't have to.

I always used screen protectors until I got my EVO which was suppose to have Gorilla Glass.
Never got a scratch on my Evo and I always put it down screen side down so I would scratch the back of the phone. So, there was no risk of scratches and never had any.
I personally don't need to be sold on what a screen protector is for and will probably add one to my Vivid once I confirm it doesn't have Gorilla Glass.
In my opinion, not using Gorilla Glass or something equivalent on a smart phone is just a step backwards.
If a screen protector is not needed than why would you want to dull the beautiful screen with it.
Unfortunately I have found no evidence so far that the Vivid has G Glass.
From what I've heard anything with a HD or qhd display can't use gorilla glass because of some property of it that messes up the resolution.

After having a Dell Streak and hearing how great Gorilla Glass was and how I would nolonger need a screen protector, I was sorely letdown after I started seeing all these little scratches all over my screen nonetheless....
I went back to using a screen protector where I know my screen will be protected and if it gets all scuffed up, I just peel it off and put on another.
Gorilla Glass is not Scratch Proof. Its just more scratch then the normal glass.
Not saying it's not a big plus, but not having it isn't a deal breaker imho either.

I got you beat... I shattered the Dell Streak... Twice.
Gorilla Glass is good, but it's not fool proof... a 2 ft drop (from my pocket, while seated) face down on to ceramic tile was all it took.
Are there any advantages or disadvantages by putting screen protector on my galaxy ace. Heard that som epeople put them, and after they removed it, there stayed permanent damages.
I use a screen protector and have no issues. They used to effect the touchscreen, but newer capactive touch screens have no issues. They protect my screen from a lot of scratches.
A word of advice: buy the more expensive ones - their thicker and leave less bubbles.
When putting one on, do it from the longest edge. You'll be able to line it up better.

theres no real disadvantages. They tend to get grubbier than the screen would, but you dont get scratches (theres a lot of debate over wether the ace has gorilla glass, many sources say it does, but equally many, including samsung say it doesnt).
Advantages, well, saves scratches and once every month or so you change it and get to have a whole new phone all over again.
i actually tend to go with the short side first (generally starting at the button edge) and working up with a credit card.
i just buy a new rubberised case/screenprotector/stylus combi on ebay once a month.. keeps my phone pristine so when it comes to upgrade i can still get a decent price.
but anyway, there will be those that show you youtube videos of people attacking an ace with keys and not scratching, there will be others you tell you their screen got scratched while it was in their pocket.

personally have one original from Samsung for SGA from retailer since i bought my phone.. it feels pretty good to have a good protector screen remains smooth and no scratches at all.. actually my phone after cleaning dirt looks like just unboxed even after 9 months fell 2-3 times but nothing happened anywhere
The way I look at it is that if you don't mean to beat your phone up, you shouldn't need a screen protector. The galaxy ace comes with gorilla glass and mine hasn't been scratched since I got it in November. I've accidentally dropped it screen down a few times too.
Either way its your choice. Just my 2 cents

theres a lot of confusion over gorilla glass, samsung dont say it has, gorilla glass says it does.
But, worth remembering. Gorillla glass is SCRATCH RESISTANT, not scratch proof.
For the sake of a couple of dollars, why not have a protector anyway.

Well I see your point there. So yeah, it's not a bad investment. I just wish I could find a mirrored one But you're right, in the long run it will probably be worth it. Just like a case, we don't mean to drop our phones, but it's definately a worth it

If you phone gets a scratch with a screen protector then its easy to replace the flimsy bit of plastic
Just put it on and forget about it.
I have a plastic cover on my Ace's screen and it works like a charm. Screen is still brand new too. I actually stabbed my phone with a knife to see how good it was. The plastic has a hole but the screen is still epic
And its not even a hole, its just a little dot. The plastic barely gets scratched too. Its a win-win situation.

Its not noticeable its nothing bad it just protects your screen with out making a massive fusd, justbiy one you won't regret it.

Knife your unprotected screen, there won't be a scratch either. Gorilla glass doesn't scratch easily.
The screen protector serves a more useful purpose at making the screen smoother, less reflective, and retain less fingerprints.

I guess accidents doesnt exist in your perfect world.
However, someone in the first page said to buy the more expensive ones, thats just a load of bull. Cheap ones from ebay work just as good. These screen protectors cost 0.1$ to manufacture so that's why they're able to make money even if they sell em cheap.

I'll never understand screen protector users. Our phone has Guerrilla Glass, designed so you DON'T need a screen protector, and it works. I've never had a screen protector on my Ace, or any of my phones for that matter, and none of my screens have scratches or marks.
My Ace Screen looks like it just came out of the box, and it has been dropped, and I have even tested the durability of the screen by trying to scratch it with a knife, keys, and sand paper... and it still looks brand new.
Screen protectors make the phone screen feel less slick and smooth, and they are difficult to put on and remove without air bubbles all while staying centered. You can't even force out most air bubbles with a credit card or flat edge. They also make the screen less responsive, although this isn't much of an issue with capacitive touch screens anymore, it still happens if your protector is too thick.
What are you doing that you need a protector? I carry my keys and stuff in one pocket and my phone in the other, and even if they are in the same pocket, none of my phones have ever been scratched by anything in my pocket...

Every ace is different some aces have the guerilla glass some don't.
I am one of those persons with a bad screen, it scratches too fast.

I am not sure why people still use screen protectors on today's high end devices especially phones like the Galaxy Note II with the enhanced toughened glass it has. Not only do they look terrible, they cause problems. See the numerous video uploads of people trying to scratch the glass for proof of how tough it is.
The Galaxy Note II has an extra issue with screen protectors in that it obviously uses an S-Pen detection layer.
I have just read the official manual for it and it clearly states NOT to use one as it causes sensor malfunctions. See attached clipping:

This is very true with the invent of gorilla glass I have personally tried acracthing screens with no success I have even gone to the point of using an extremely sharp knife and dragging the point across the screen, he screen protectors are only really good for keeping fingerprints off screen ans if you are worried about that you really have no business having a touch screen and yes the cause many problems

Any ideas what they meant by sensor malfunction? Inaccuracy of S pen? Is it a temporal or permanent malfunction?

ya let me see you go to the beach and somehow manage to get some sand accidently on ur phone like i did when i tucked my phone in my bag which happened to have caught some sand from playing arnd..........do that and then come back here and tell us what u think of screen protectors......
I think the massage for sensor error is not for s-pen. but maybe for brightness or gesture hand on the top of the sensor.
I'll test it when it arrives.
But gorila glass or not... every phone i had got scratched, and if it was made with diamond glass .- it would scratch...
F..it - I'll use the screen protector. (bestskinsever has the best one for me.. I just emailed them when will they get one for NOTE II.

Gorilla glass will still scratch I had a htc one x with a few light scratches from sand and everyday grit

I get AMAZED when people vouch for screen protectors like they are invincible ARMOR which protects the screen from all possible damage like that from Sand all keep talking about.
Is it so that sand will not scratch the screen protector but will the screen? Or is it that we feel that even if it does scratch the screen protector, it will miraculously save the screen? Both this conditions seems quite ambiguous and UNBELIEVABLE to me unless I see a proof that screen protectors ACTUALLY save the screen even when scratched through Sand or Diamond or whatever!
I would appreciate enlightenment through fellow members on this and more thoughts accordingly.
This really annoys me.
Gorilla Glass SRATCHES. It may not be a huge scratch but you will always get light scratches which only show up when you inspect the screen closely and I HATE those more because you can be so careful with the phone and then find some tiny dust particle you couldn't even see has made a mark on your display. I hate it.
Screen protectors get Scratched. They will get more scratches than the glass because they are softer but the screen will be perfect underneath.
And when it's really dirty ill just change the protector.
I agree that the protectors won't stop something seriously sharp like metal going through but if you take care with the phone and use a protector then the phone will be perfect for as long as you have it.
And incidentally I have a GLAS.T SGP protector on my iPhone 5. It's glass so it won't scratch easily, and yes it will pick up light scratches but again underneath its perfect.
That's why I use them.

Why is this confusing to you? If you cover something, and the cover is scratched, then you can just change the cover. If your protector is pierced, then of course no go, but I suspect your screen is still damaged. Scratches are typically not deep.

I have a Spigen Crystal Clear protector on my Note II
So far after a days use i have found NO problems with having the protector on.
I will keep this thread informed if I run into any problems.

My question is more related to the THICKNESS of those screen protectors. How does a less than 1mm thin plastic skin protect whats beneath. Wouldn't it scratch the screen anyway when it is exposed to sand and hard metal which can scratch Gorilla glass?
I get extremely annoyed when the screen protectors themselves may get easily scratched even while putting on the screen. I have used SGP Ultra Fine on my SGS2 for few weeks and while I loved the way my fingers used to glide over them with hardly any smearing compared to the original Gorilla glass screen, I could not tolerate the numerous scratches it got despite careful use and hence had to remove it to avoid the distraction and recover the outstanding display beneath. I hate spoiling the display for such hypothetical situation where we believe that the protector can actually protect the screen as I anyway never had any scratch on my SGS1 and only recently noticed couple of them on my SGS2 which may have come during a visit to the service center and am still okay with the screen without the protector as otherwise the screen is still flawless and those scratches are invisible unless specifically searched at an angle with strong light (like sunlight) comes through a specific angle.
I think people are missing the point here, my original post made reference to the Samsung manual for this device which clearly tells you not to use one as it causes malfunctions.
The negatives outway the positives in that, they alter functionality of the phone as stated by Samsung, they spoil the appearance of your phone with bubbles and mis-alignment, they are not going to save the screen from heavy scratches anyway and the only people that really benefit are companies that sell them.
If you use one and you are happy with that then all well and good. But personally I find if you take care of your phone and use a good case as I have done for years you simply won't need a protector.
I used one for months on a first gen Note, no problems at all; I can't imagine why it would cause any problems. And the reason I installed one is because before I installed it, a small bit of dust caused a noticable scratch on the glass. As for appearance issues, if you take your time and install a decent quality one, you won't notice it at all, and I tend to prefer the feel of a protected screen over glass now. Having used a few protectors over the years, it's hard to imagine what you'd be doing that could penetrate a protector, short of attacking it with a Stanley knife, in which case your screen is the least of your worries. They're designed to take minor scuffs, and since this is a stylus orientated device, I'd be worried about dragging plastic over it without some protection.
I am on day 3 with my protector on my Note II and no problems.
Pen works perfectly. Pressure also works perfectly.
I want to know about this as I plan to draw a lot on my galaxy note and I am known to be quite "expressive". I don't want to scratch up my screen from doing digital paintings, that's why I want a screen protector :/

I'm still not sure what they meant by malfunction....is this a long term malfunction or short tern while the screen protector is on?

I believe they are concerned about it covering up the light sensor than more than anything.

The bottom line is your screen will probably end up with a minor scratch after a year of use. So do you put some cheap plastic/rubber film on it and never enjoy the brilliant screen? Or do you enjoy it for all it's glory and deal with scratches if they happen?
The Note 2 comes with the best screen protector already. It is called Gorilla Glass 2. Why put a 10 cent (sold to you for $40) piece of crap on it?

There are great protectors out there that are very clear and looks almost like as if nothing is on it

Unless your screen protector is magnetic, it's not going to cause malfunctions.
You can put a piece of cardboard on top of your screen and it doesn't affect the stylus. Seriously. Try it.
The only way you are going to induce scratches is if your protector is made out of sand or something, or you trap sand or whatever under it.
I didn't use screen protectors with my galaxy note until I got a small scratch on the screen.
There is also a nice degree of comfort knowing your screen is protected. If you get something on the screen - dirt, oil, whatever.
Worst case scenario is you just get a new protector. (versus a new screen).
Do I really NEED one? Perhaps not. But I do anyway.

I used THIS until now, i removed it because its not good. Now I feeled how great the feeling without Protector is. Is it easy to get Scractes?

Never used to use a screen protector but since my phones screen got smashed I thought it would be good to have an extra layer of protection on.
Using This One.
Only thing I've noticed is that is reflects slightly more than w/o it on. Still fells just as smooth as the original glass.
I prefer a matt protector, cuts reflections way down and fingerprints are almost non existant. I don't notice any degredation in image quality (not saying there is none, I just don't see any) so for me it's a no brainer.
Yes, I use a screen protector. I went down the road of the expensive wet-applied screen protectors where you pay 15-20 bucks for one. They work, sure, but their surface was always grippy enough that I was left dissatisfied. After talking with some users here about the scotch tape trick (keep a loop of scotch tape handy to pull off dust particles), I went back to the dry-applied screen protectors. You know, the kind you pay 5 bucks for and get 10 of, or whatever. Much happier with these now and they applied just as nicely as the wet protectors. A little bit more of a headache to apply, but with the scotch tape, takes out all of my former homicidal feelings I previously had. :good:
I use it on my phone since I put it in my pants pocket, it might get scratched. But for the nexus 7 no I don't. I use the supcase and I think that should secure it enough.

I use an anti glare screen protector so i can break the law and use the thing while breaking other road laws in my law breaking vehicle. however it does impact negatively on the screen res causing a bit of distortion close up. either its just a cheap one or its the fact that its anti glare.

Nope, I've never liked using them.
If there is no protector, the screen will open to the possibility of scratches. If you want to choose the one you want from
