Worth the Upgrade from an ION? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can somebody in a similar situation help me with an upgrade decision?
I just recently sold my Samsung Galaxy Note 1 because I think that line has peaked. All the cool innovations seem to be coming from elsewhere. Whether it be waterproofing, camera improvements, or just greater size.
So I picked up an ION from ATT while the upgrade price was $1 US. It does just about everything well. My plan was to wait out the next round of releases like at MWC and see if anything really stands out.
The Z looks great, but is it REALLY that much of an upgrade over the ION/TL or even the Acro S? Is anybody with a current gen Xperia going to jump on the Z and the higher price?

It sure is a big upgrade over the Ion no doubt. But I'd suggest you wait for the next Sony flagship. It will be a beast according to rumors.

personally I would not upgrade if I had a S/T/Ion etc, the only reason I'm upgrading is because my phone (arc s) is dog slow.

That's kind of how I'm swaying. The real draw for me is the new camera sensor but I fear it may not be better than the current exymor. The results from the Oppo find 5 with the same sensor are less than impressive.

Me too. Probably would have bought the Z if came out last week. Now i am waiting for the M7 announcement . Also interested on in whatver Nokia is cooking up with the next pureview phone. Timing is everything.

Definitely better than the ION and i would say it is worth it

I have the ion, and plan on upgrading to the Z. I skipped out on the TL, so I'm in line for a new phone from Sony. I think the design and the 1080p screen makes it worth getting.

I have an SGS2 and am looking for a new phone with a good good camera. So far this is worth looking at but from what I heard the camera is not that good I will have to wait for SGS4 lets hope camera is good on that or always HTC M7. Htc have good cameras.

Sony should manufacture the next Google Nexus Phone

They say Jellybean update will focus on gaming. Im thinking about that PLaystation certified phone with a quadcore Processor, 4.65 inches screen, 12 megapixels and 2 megapixels front facing camera that can both carry 1080p video capture make sense here.
Im sure Sony will be a legit contender to be the next google nexus phone. It also sounds great if you gonna put the name "SONY XPERIA NEXUS"
any technical infoarmation new sony experia ?
Well if they want it to use yesterday's hardware and launch with an old Android version with a promise of an update after launch. </sarcasm>
If Sony get chosen for Nexus 4, what is certain is that it will be prettier.
The new Sony Experia (No Ericsson anymore) looks great, and i guess sony makes quality products but i think Samsung is one of the biggest leaders on high-end performance/quality basis and i think the next Nexus will be Samsung too... but who knows!
Sony would be a good option i think, rather than HTC. They also have good cameras and are developing a new sensor for smartphones that will do great.
considering Google owns Moto mobile now, wouldn't the next Nexus phone be a Moto?
Hey
I think you're forgetting that Google now owns Motorola. Btw they already announced at CES that Google, Motorola, and Intel are working on the next one. It's going to be sweet!

Exactly why I don't want Sony to make my phones anymore. Seems the only thing they keep up to date nowadays is their camera line. Although who knows, they might make an up-to-date Android phone this year. Not the Google flagship though.
True about the Motorola, it'll be interesting. But idk if it should have intel processor... oh well.
No, no, and no. A Sony Nexus would not be good for a nexus device whatsoever. PlayStation Certified? That would be just great to separate it from every other stock android device. And it would be great to delay updates. Sure Sony has great hardware, but it feels overall cheap. I'd rather take Samsung for nexus again than Sony. If the next android update does by chance have something to do with gaming, Google will want it to tie in with the rest of the operating system. Games would sync just as gmail and contacts do. Also, Sony never has been good with stock android. The Verizon Xperia Play was supposedly stock, but we all know that Sony has already turned its back on it. So in my opinion, Sony would do as much for a Nexus as some company like Viewsonic.

NO.
Sony wouldn't be a good contender until they decide to use OLED screens for their phones. It's considered a downgrade if the 'Xperia Nexus' uses an LCD.
Eh. Not a fan of Sony's design. The face buttons on the Xperia Arc look terrible.
They're the only android OEMs making attractive hardware.
Its so ugly. It reminds me of my 2006 ps3, but slightly thinner.

anyone should develop next nexus other than samsung LOL IMHO
I would cry out in joy if HTC got to make the next Nexus phone, as they rightfully should.
yep
i agree, as long as sony applies themselves they can really crank out some AWESOME stuff. example: ps3

Yeah HTC or Samsung would be the best choice imo. Though HTC does like to recycle the same designs over and over again.

Camera is good with official ROM, not so good with CM based ROMS.
Rather see if you can get Nexus 4. It's in your price range (actually depends on where you are, availability and price differs from country to country) and much better than all your options your considering.
http://www.google.co.za/nexus/4/
Most of those phones you are considering have been on the market a while and the older the device the smaller the community and slower the development gets as people get newer phones. If I had to choose one of them I'd choose the One S, no questions asked. Much faster than the competition, has official JB and is still fairly new.
F*ck Samsung .
Buy Acer cloudmobile s500.
Low-price and high performance... just perfect .
HTC One S no doubt
best dual core, i mean..... cortex a15...maaannn.....that was fast........

Unfornatuely the Nexus 4 costs €600 here thats far above my budget, also I am looking for smaller sized phones.
I just came across the Desire X. It fits all my requirements only thing is that currently almost no development
Thats why I asked u guys u have experience and optimus black was my 1st choice. But how bout the camera, is it good? and speed? I also see theres alot of development on the Optimus black, the white one also looks sexy:good:

Why should I buy an unkown brand in the smartphone community? And I thoguht Sasmung is known for his good wuality cameras / phones
It has been a very good phone for me you know. It has been with me for about one and a half years and it has come over a car crash, fallen into a pool, dropped a lot of times and in one of those it fell from a 1st floor directly to the ground. I had to change the gorilla glass screen which was about 30 us dollars. It has been an adventure and it continues. Camera is not the best but as any other bad mobile camera, it takes very good full light photos. There is still a hell of a development going on. It is just as fast as 80% of optimus 2x stock if you are running zeus rom with cpu at 1350Mhz. Screen has enough brightness, everything is big and legible and we are having official stock ICS modded in some days, actually now. What else can i say? I am not marketing this phone but it is a good buy. If you are looking for a fond working phone this might be your choice, believe me. If you are looking for a fast like hell phone just dont look for LG OB. Hope Ive helped.
PS: getting a GS2 wont hurt...

Sorry to hear that. It went for alot cheaper in some countries.
Desire X is a good choice HW wise. Not as good as the One S, but cheaper and doesn't have as big a screen. (The One S's graphics Chipset will run circles around all the other phones even the SGS2).
If you want a good community, look at previous flagship phones or really good for it's price phones of well known brands (Unknown brands tend to have much smaller communities).
This phone actually has a large Chinese community that doesn't interact with this forum much. I think I'm missing our sometimes since Google Translate can only do so much.
If you can afford it I would go for the One S.
Your Xperia Pro is on par with most of the other phones and I wouldn't pay money to get another similar phone. I don't think a upgrade is necessary actually.
I told ya.. best performance at that price :good: .
It`s released in September 2012, I guess that`s why there`s no developing topic in this community.
I guess they`ll add it to XDA soon, cause it`s a cool phone .
And it`s f*cking better than S2 .

High-end.If you don't mind waiting you could see if the Acer's development picks up before making your final choice.
When buying a phone second hand make sure it hasn't been tinkered and OC'ed and with HTC make sure it's still S-ON that way you know it hasn't been tinkered with.

Yes. I'm not sorry about it, but it's getting old. Quite a few great devs moved on already. Theres still plenty of skill and commitment here though and we might be getting official CM10.1 soon (G+ pictures from official dev has already been posted, but no nightlies appeared yet).
Lol....
No guys, its not the Htc one S.
I went back to Xperia P, again.Yes, first time I got it on summer but traded it for Xperia Pro. Now 4 months without smartphone and of research.. I REALLY regret I was so stupid! [at that time there wasnt any development]
I mean 8mp camera, dual core and handsome: the perfect phone!
Only thing is battery, isnt it replaceble with a 1750 li-on??
If you want long lasting battery, go witg Motorola Razr MAXX lol dunno if its in your price range though. But yeah One S looks superb. Hmm..

[Q] Why choose an Xperia Z over a Nexus 4?

I'm in the market for an upgrade and am torn between the Xperia Z and the Nexus 4. Obviously the Nexus 4 has the advantages of cost and timely updates from Google. I've read a lot of professional reviews about both phones, but would enjoy the chance to hear from Xperia Z owners about why I should choose this device over the Nexus 4.
The main advantages that I can see are; the screen resolution, the LCD screen being better in direct sunlight, 4G, upgradeable storage, waterproof, arguably stronger to being dropped, better battery life, better looks. Of those the upgradeable storage seems like a large gain, and the waterproofing a nice novelty (unless it one day saves me I guess!)
I'd love to hear from anyone that wants to persuade me to spend a bit more cash and go for the XZ.
I sold my N4 and bought an XZ. The only advantage the N4 has is that it's a Nexus, I run Cyanogenmod though so that's pretty much a non issue for me. Also, the N4 has a much more active dev community. Obviously it's cheaper too. I prefer the XZ in every other way though.
If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.
as the upper guy said go for the XperiaZ if u like giving your phone a shower every week
and have you checked ZL cause it is smaller with same 5inch screen
it's lighter also it has a better sound since its not rugged
Thanks for your reply about the ZL. According to the Sony website it's a few grams heavier but a decent bit smaller dimension wise. It's not available over here yet, but I'm going to keep an eye out for it.
I'd be interested to hear opinions about two issues that have come up in the reviews:
1) Software flaws that require the phone to be restarted to resolve
2) How the phone feels against your ear during calls - this sounds a bit of a strange one I admit!
Finally, does anyone have any information about the cost of Sony replacing the battery. Having replaced the battery (quite easily) on my Samsung Galaxy after about a year I'd be interested to know how easy/costly it is on a device such as this. I know Apple replace them on the iPhones for £55.
If it was my decision I would get a n4. Not only does it trounce the XZ in benchmarks but you get the vanilla android experience and you'll always be on the cutting edge when it comes to software updates. If 4G is a must then its the XZ you'll want although the hspa+ on the n4 is more than fast enough. Also, If you need the best shooter you can get then the XZ is also your best bet although again the nexus 4 is still not awful with its 8mp camera. Both phones will require a wipe down every once in a while due to their design (the nexus 4 has a gorilla glass back). I don't own a nexus 4 myself but quite a bit of my friends do and while only one of them has shattered the back cover, I've read many stories of people who absolutely despise the Nexus 4 claiming the back will shatter at the slight impact, however this can easily be worked around with a nice beefy case if you're worried.

I'm sort of in the same boat, I sold my iPhone 5 and brought a nexus 4.
I'm happy with it to a point but I'm really interested in the Z, I'm not sure why but it looks amazing.
I've never really played with a Z apart from a demo handset in phone shop but it looked wicked.
I think the main thing I got the nexus for was the updates, I'm happy with the performance of the phone, battery life could be better but apart from that, the nexus is a really good phone.
But if I had the chance to swap for a xperia Z then I would definitely swap.

I wouldnt make the jump or wouldnt pay extra 200 for XZ over nexus 4, its a good phone but not a lot of dev for it, so far we have 1 kernel developer and maybe 4-5 good roms dev after 3 months coming out. I dint think it was a big jump from S3 to XZ.
CM10.1 is on here but there are a lot of bugs including memory leak. XZ is comparable to N4 but I dont think it can compete with HTC one or S4 and thats coming from someone who own the phone for more than a month.
P.s Dont come on this forum and ask for opinion, youtube and look at your options, most on here are either Fanboy or Sony employee.

Nexus has price and Android Update on its side
on the other hands, XZ is more powerful, absolutely awesome design
that's all rest its bull****, you cant compare point per point every stuff
are you willing to spend over 500/600 euros for such mobile phone?
that's your first question to figure out
personally i m focused much about aesthetic and design, XZ is one of most if not the most beautiful smartphone ever made
it s even prettier than iPhone 5
focus on those things,
XZ = design and powerful
Nexus = quality / cost almost unbeatable, Android Update

That wasn't a memory leak though, it was a gpu scaling issue and has been fixed (for me at least). It was a very minor issue and I wouldn't have even noticed if it wasn't pointed out.
Others have pointed out the price difference. This is absolutely right. Having the N4, if the XZ wasn't given to me, I wouldn't have gotten it. Between the 2, the N4 is half the price. If you're looking to spend money on one or other, the N4's definitely a bigger bang for the buck. While I do firmly believe that the XZ is a better all around phone, I can't honestly say that the differences you get warrant the additional 300 bucks.
Well I guess it depends on where you live but I'd only save 40SEK (About 6.50USD) A month on the Nexus 4.
And the salesman was really pushing the nexus4 so I guess it isn't to popular here in Sweden either. So the choice was easy for me.
Aannyyway, I went with the Z, obviously. Mostly for the water resitance as i broke my S2 from water damage and my arc got dropped once to (but it survived)
I love this phone, I don't have any issues with it. Except that you NEED to buy good screen protector, one with lifetime warranty perhaps.
You do not wan't to scratch the Anti-Shatter Filter. ( I actually returned mine because I did and got it replaced)
Thanks for all of your inputs. I feel a lot more informed, but I'm not sure if I'm any closer to making a decision.
The more I think about it though the more interested I am in the 'pure Android' experience. I might try and bide my time and wait and see if the S4 'Nexus' ships internationally, or if there is any noise towards the end of the year about a Nexus 5.

Thanks for all of your inputs. I feel a lot more informed, but I'm not sure if I'm any closer to making a decision.

Xperia Z has open AOSP Sources, with time there will be a perfect AOSP rom, and the roms we've got now are perfectly fine, they're great actually, the Carbonrom is almost flaw free. and Cyanogenmod works great as a daily driver, few lag bugs and radio isn't working afaik.
I paid as much for the xperia z then I would for the nexus 4. And I get waterproof and bigger screen. So it was easy to make the call and expendable memory is nice too. Both would cost 300 euros. Defiantly the Xperia Z is the better phone for the same price.

Still Worth a Buy?

I'm am looking for opinions on buying this phone NOW.
I am currently using the HTC One. I have been through a lot of devices, lately and looking for that "perfect" device and I was holding off on the Xperia Z mostly due to the price unlocked. I broke down and got the HTC One on contract in the US. Its a great phone, but just lacks that wow factor. It's like the Honda of phones, everything done well, nothing spectacular.
So, thinking I can flip it for the same price if not more than the Xperia Z, I'm looking again.
With all the other flagships out there or soon to be out there, do you think buying the Z now still makes sense?
Thanks for looking
Yes, definitely worth it. I've been using this beast for the past 2months & i can assure you that you won't be disappointed.

There isn't much difference apart from the UI and the camera between the htc one and the xz. The HTC has a newer processor, the XZ has a better camera. Different screen technologies. If I was you I would stick with the One unless you don't like it at all. They are both good phones.
the only wow factor that XZ has over One is the water-proof feature. Beside that, One is better than Z in most aspects. If you want something to show off to your friend, you better check for Galaxy S4 as it has many features such as "fun" (and mostly useless) gestures:highfive:
go with S4 for the trade...
S4 over the pair of them.

I just recently had a Note 2. Is there anything really different in the S4? I see them as virtually the same.
I think if you like the Sony Xperia z go for it
After 3 months I m finding used Xperia z
I think htc one very good phone
It's your choice which thing you want in your phone
First see demo then decide:thumbup:

I was in same situation as you, I ended up selling the HTC One and bought a Xperia Z.
For me it was mainly that accessibility service has major bugs in the lock screen when it's turned on for my pebble service. And I need this turned on to use my pebble smartwatch.
Also not a huge fan of sense, I much prefer stock android, and sony is much closer to that. And I just like the design of the Xperia Z overall.
HTC did have a better screen with better viewing angles, but I didn't really find that an issue with the Xperia z.
I am also using an S4 from my company and I still prefer the Xperia Z over it. All the new "features" aren't really that practical in real life use. It doesn't look like a premium phone, just the same as the S3. Touchwiz isn't so bad, but when i enable accessibility settings for my pebble watch it disables a number of the new "features". Dunno why.
This was my experience, obviously yours will be different.
It's really all down to what YOU prefer. I would advise you to have a try, play around and see what you like first.

Android OS updates slow?

Hi there!
Was at a phone shop earlier this afternoon afternoon and there I was comparing the new HTC One M8, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5 and the Xperia Z1 side by side. For some reason I fell in love with the Z1. Why? It was just the right size (5" screen), its very light, build quality seem topnotch, audio quality (with my headphones) was near amazing, camera quality seem excellent and it was quite fluid and performance seem spot on.
But I don't want to ask about what's wrong with it. Rather I want to discuss about updates.
As the current crop of Android OEMs start updating their devices to 4.4.2 my question is: do you guys trust Sony with timely/quick updates with their devices? You think its slow? Have they been keeping their promise in updates?
What you think?
They are ok with speed of updates..z1 got kitkat abt a month ago...but there were some bugs which were resolved by another update...am hearing that there may be another update soon...so sony seems to be good in this department

Compared to how Sony (Sony Ericsson*) did treat their older device generations (2010 - 2011 devices specially), I can't deny how much they have improved on the high end Z line-up! So yes, they're fast, compared to a couple of years ago!

They're not super fast but they're not slow either, they're on par with Samsung and htc on this
Which makes them much faster than lg and a little slower than motorola
Also much slower than nexus devices but everyone else is anyway
The rest of the manufacturers don't even bother to update their devices i think
BUT i'd like to point out that with Sony's 2 flagships a year schedule plus other devices, updates might begin to slow down with the increased device count. This is just a supposition of mine of course but it might happen

that is true..but we must keep in mind that 2 'flagship' devices are launched....the total no of phones launched is actually less compared to some oems..2 flagships 2 mid range and 2 budget ... very unlike samsung launching 34 phones in the indian market in 2013
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
But with two "flagship" devices being launched in a matter of and/or a span of 9 months (in this case the Z1 & the Z2) would that put Sony in a certain "pressure" to keep up with updating their devices often or in a quick/timely fashion?
If I was a Z1 owner in the past 6 months and realising and assuming the OEM who made my device will update it only once more (say in next 4-6 months) that would mean my device is now dispensable after 12 months even though apps are still being updated? That's not good is it?
A so-called "flagship" device will no longer be flagship after 9 months. Before it as every 12 months. How un-reassuring and depressing to know.
Or am I being too negative? Or just realistic?
u r actually being realistic... this is the fact with all OEMSs......consider a manufacturer's scenario presently... the Z1 has 4.2.2...... currently 4.4.3 and 4.4.4 are out....also 5.0 is probably coming out tomorrow.... so sony will probably skip 4.4.4 and go straight to 5.0.......Hence wenever u r buying a NON NEXUS phone... make sure u like the UI... coz as long as u don't flash an AOSP rom ... the look and feel of the OS will remain nearly the same irrespective of the android version ... sad but true
The only reason why I went with sony was the camera apps functions and graphic engine they have on the phones.
