Still Worth a Buy? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm am looking for opinions on buying this phone NOW.
I am currently using the HTC One. I have been through a lot of devices, lately and looking for that "perfect" device and I was holding off on the Xperia Z mostly due to the price unlocked. I broke down and got the HTC One on contract in the US. Its a great phone, but just lacks that wow factor. It's like the Honda of phones, everything done well, nothing spectacular.
So, thinking I can flip it for the same price if not more than the Xperia Z, I'm looking again.
With all the other flagships out there or soon to be out there, do you think buying the Z now still makes sense?
Thanks for looking

Yes, definitely worth it. I've been using this beast for the past 2months & i can assure you that you won't be disappointed.

There isn't much difference apart from the UI and the camera between the htc one and the xz. The HTC has a newer processor, the XZ has a better camera. Different screen technologies. If I was you I would stick with the One unless you don't like it at all. They are both good phones.

the only wow factor that XZ has over One is the water-proof feature. Beside that, One is better than Z in most aspects. If you want something to show off to your friend, you better check for Galaxy S4 as it has many features such as "fun" (and mostly useless) gestures:highfive:

go with S4 for the trade...

S4 over the pair of them.

I just recently had a Note 2. Is there anything really different in the S4? I see them as virtually the same.

I think if you like the Sony Xperia z go for it
After 3 months I m finding used Xperia z
I think htc one very good phone
It's your choice which thing you want in your phone
First see demo then decide:thumbup:

I was in same situation as you, I ended up selling the HTC One and bought a Xperia Z.
For me it was mainly that accessibility service has major bugs in the lock screen when it's turned on for my pebble service. And I need this turned on to use my pebble smartwatch.
Also not a huge fan of sense, I much prefer stock android, and sony is much closer to that. And I just like the design of the Xperia Z overall.
HTC did have a better screen with better viewing angles, but I didn't really find that an issue with the Xperia z.
I am also using an S4 from my company and I still prefer the Xperia Z over it. All the new "features" aren't really that practical in real life use. It doesn't look like a premium phone, just the same as the S3. Touchwiz isn't so bad, but when i enable accessibility settings for my pebble watch it disables a number of the new "features". Dunno why.
This was my experience, obviously yours will be different.
It's really all down to what YOU prefer. I would advise you to have a try, play around and see what you like first.

. So i will probably end up buying it and hoping for the best.

[Q] Xperia T vs Galaxy siii

Hey i may have the opportunity to swap my galaxy s iii for a Xperia T i was just wondering if anyone has made the change from S3 to T?
Or just what are your thought on the swap?
Why would you wanna swap the S3 for a XT? Doesn't make sense, the S3 is a lot more powerful. I doubt anyone would swap phones, if you have an S3, it'd be a downgrade.
Do you by any chance mean the S2? If so, then yes, swap, the T is a lot better.
Mainly because the world and his wife has an s3. Ive also flashes the polish jb update and the phone lags now. Just fancy a change. I dont tend to stick to one phone for too long lol

The world and his wife will probably have an XT before long - it is the Bond phone after all.
I was considering both the S3 and XT and went for the XT. Mainly for the camera. Having lived with it for a week or two now I'm pleased I made the choice I did. (I had the Galaxy Note before but gave it to my father as his sight is failing and he loved my big screen )
I'm glad I went for the XT - camera is good and the music player is way better than my Note was. It also feels more like proper Android as Samsung TouchWiz was OK but not really to my liking.
There are some features the XT has that I like too - like the volume and power buttons not being opposite each other, location based WiFi switching, the dedicated camera button and having the music player controls on the lock screen, etc. and I prefer the XT screen.

well if you have a chance try it yourself in a shop. this kind of thread will only bring you word wars, unfortunately.
i like it more, feels better in a hand, screen is better, sony software is better, cm10 is working already better than on sgs3.
but it is your decision in the end.
and, we'll have a great kernel here, soon

I've come from an HTC One X which again is substantially more powerful than the T but I've not looked back, and that's on stock ICS. Once I get around to unlock, root and running custom ROM I'll be even happier I'm sure.

Well if you could try out the XT beforehand then that'd lower the risk of you regretting it.
Not here to start wars, but looking at the specs of each phone, I'd say the S3 is better, and thanks to its more powerful specs, it'd be more futureproof than the XT.
It won't be long before a lot of people have the XT and then you'd be in the same boat all over again.
My thoughts, try out the phone first, see how it feels, and if you want, swap it.

Specs say one thing. People who have used it say another.
As you say - try before you swap.
yeah not only specs matter.... that bothers me cause samsung has been putting out core wars and screen inch wars.. for samsung it must be bigger and more powerful.. but software and hardware deign Sucks!
My previous phone was the Galaxy S3. Now I have the Xperia T.
Speed feeling is same. Galaxy S3 has better battery. Xperia T is better in the hand (smallest).
My current favorite is Xperia T.
Coming from an S3 too, mainly because I prefer black, industrial designs with sharp edges as opposed to curves, flowers and the whole 'nature' inspiration. The stock ringtones on the S3 were just plain awful. The Sony software looks slicker than TouchWiz (althouth TouchWiz has a few extra unique features).
I do miss the speed of the S3's camera, but overall it's been worth the upgrade.
Depending on where you are the s3 doesn't really have much over the T.
Pretty sure here they are both 1.5ghz dual core devices. The s3 gets an extra gig of ram but, that's hardly a deal maker for most people.
AFAIK the quad core version of the s3 still lacks dev support and I'd take somewhat inferior specs with superior dev support.
Sent from my HTC_Flyer_P512_NA using xda app-developers app
Own both and note 2 would recommend sticking with S3.
It's a more powerful beast and battery life is better.
Screen quality far superior.
The following reasons I would recommend getting T over S3:
Better quality sound but not necessarily louder
Better camera
Better design
Better hardware
Better UI
Everything else would have goto s3. Dev support is much better with S3 hardly any support for T.
Don't get T for the sake of change as you will probably regret it unless you prefer smaller screens.
T does have some good features tho and UI is much better. Touchwiz is poor.

I got the same feeling because personally Sony and HTC have more intresting things about their software than samsung. I always easily get bored of samsung phones no matter how good battery life or hardware. My latest samsung phones since 2010 have been the GS1/2/3 and Wave and all were extremely boring. I have the HOX now and had the HOS before it and Sony Xperia S, Arc S and PLAY. Never found them boring with the xperia s was just battery life, camera auto focus took too long and audio volume and bass was nonsense and its the same again with the xperia T bar camera auto focus problem which is why i didnt get it. The ARC S and PLAY the hardware side is simply weak tbh and the fact they have so little ram they always struggled with games and apps. Personally the play was brought out too early they should have been bringing that out now and support it with 2gb RAM, Quad Core and something like adreno 320GPU or even if it was dual core with 1gb RAM and adreno 225 GPU.
300+ ram, single core and adreno 205 was not doing it atall. Its a shame though as i really like the xperia T and was going to have it as my second phone but the audio and battery life problem is a big issue.
I did that. I gave my S3 to my son an bought the Xperia T.
I can not tel you what is the better Phone. The T feels faster but thats a feeling. The browser on the S3 was faster. I am a hughe Samsung fan but a bigger Sony fan.
I can defo say the browser speed on the s3 was a flyer but I am not missing that atall, as my HOX is fast enough.
My mother and step dad, joined contracts in my mums name have played with the s3 and the XT and are not music people so they prefer the XT battery life wont be and issue either for them as they are not the kind of people that will be browsing internet alot, playing music, watching videos etc and on t mobile the XT is a bit cheaper aswell and the prefer the look and feel of the XT especially as its a bit smaller.

I read that Quads are no use on apps and games? also sony dual is much as powerfull as the one x quad?
Quads are useful for games that utilize it. Apps not as much. And android overall no. But the adreno 320 is a pretty good GPU.

I came from a One X to the XpT and I've not looked back.
As it stands, the HTC doesn't have S-Off so you need to use a PC every time you want to flash a new ROM.
HTC have really screwed the pooch and I'll never buy HTC again until they sort themselves out.
As it sounds like you enjoy modding your phones, I'd give the HTCs a wide berth.
Perfect example is CM10, it took months to get CM10 to be on get.cm for the HTC. It took a few days for the XpT.
If you decide you want the HTC One X anyway, I'll sell you my black 32GB one.
TX gorgeous 720p display with 13mpx camera
well i was had a hard time to decided which one is really fit for me
my choices is Xperia T, Xperia SL, HOX, S III
but i decided to get XT, i like the design, it's better than the others IMO

Btw what are the aspects of Xperia SL? I dint see any in the xda yet!

Annoying opinion question!

I am about to commit myself to yet another contract and coming from the arc, Which I've been more than happy with I think I'm going to go for the Z.
Now I've read countless threads about pros/cons but all in all, should I look towards the HTC one or even s4... Not a big fan of either but I want my contracts worth out of the phone!

They are all 3 great phones, they all have pro's and cons it doesn't matter which of the 3 you choose they are all good phones that are worth your money.
Since you're in a Sony section and since you come from the arc, I'd say go for the Xperia Z, you really won't regret it.

technically i suggest for htc or Sony
and cause htc One got delay report it means htc couldn't do so well
SO for nowadays Xperia Z can be ur Zing
:good:
If you use your phone for light tasks and not allot, XZ with stamina mode will make you through days.
HTC one camera will be very useful if your pics r taken in lowlight condition.
As for Sammy, I think they do as Apple do in every good and bad way.

I like my Xperia Z a lot, but the specs of the HTC One sure are very sexy.
Galaxy S is not my type of phone, it is okay but I prefer the Xperia Z above that one for sure.
Kind regards, Stefan.
Thanks all. Pretty much helped confirm what I already thought.
Although specs of others are looking stronger in areas, I like the quality build and theming of Sony, plus coming from the arc, I know that it will be readily modifiable.
I have come from HTC, and so glad I did. Much more functionality within the Sony phone.
USB Host, Throw, screen mirror connect and display to my tv, laptop... out of the box. Syncing/backing up any parts of your phone/micro SD to PC, none of which exists on any of my HTC devices.
Walkman app with custom eq, blows away any of HTC beats phones for sound quality.
Theming is not Sony's strong suit on this phone, much more customisable with HTC, especially like the grey bars...
IMO, HTC build quality is probably the best out there and always has been. And the release to public OS is more stable and has less issues, eg WIFI, initial setup quirks. But I also think that Sony may have rushed this out to market before the other big guns released there flagship phones for 2013, hence some of what I mentioned about the OS.
Buy the Sony, I am sure you won't regret it. I am happy with almost all aspects of the Xperia Z.
Since your current phone is the Xperia Arc, which is the same generation as my previous phone (the LG Optimus 2X), you might get the same experience that I had. Personally, I am blown away by this phone.
You're on XDA so I am assuming you are fond of the idea of good development support from the manufacturers. This means no to the S4. The S2, 3 note and note 2 are prime examples that samsung exynos devices are more or less the worst thing for development. If you are happy on stock roms then it might be allright.. but then again their stock roms are pretty awful, buggy and laggy. Not to mention the super brick bug.
I wouldn't dream of saying don't get the htc one as I think it should be great. It simply wasn't what I was after (namely water resistance and larger screen).
Development is important to me, I have gone through more roms, kernels and phone brickings that i ever thought I would, and yet the phone is still in one piece!
I am a big fan of Sony phones, despite various issues but then I suppose all phones have flaws...
Sent from my LT15i using xda app-developers app
It depends, from the sound of it, it looks like you're getting the Z on contract which means you can't unlock the bootloader. Whether or not that is an issue is up to you.
That being said I absolutely love the stock software on my phone as it is. I'm a flashaholic and I haven't even unlocked the bootloader yet! I only rooted it to remove the charging notification.
Sony have really stepped up their game with the Z in terms of both hardware and software. It just works, simple. There are a few bugs but they aren't major and hopefully they'll be fixed shortly.

[Q] Why choose an Xperia Z over a Nexus 4?

I'm in the market for an upgrade and am torn between the Xperia Z and the Nexus 4. Obviously the Nexus 4 has the advantages of cost and timely updates from Google. I've read a lot of professional reviews about both phones, but would enjoy the chance to hear from Xperia Z owners about why I should choose this device over the Nexus 4.
The main advantages that I can see are; the screen resolution, the LCD screen being better in direct sunlight, 4G, upgradeable storage, waterproof, arguably stronger to being dropped, better battery life, better looks. Of those the upgradeable storage seems like a large gain, and the waterproofing a nice novelty (unless it one day saves me I guess!)
I'd love to hear from anyone that wants to persuade me to spend a bit more cash and go for the XZ.
I sold my N4 and bought an XZ. The only advantage the N4 has is that it's a Nexus, I run Cyanogenmod though so that's pretty much a non issue for me. Also, the N4 has a much more active dev community. Obviously it's cheaper too. I prefer the XZ in every other way though.
If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.
as the upper guy said go for the XperiaZ if u like giving your phone a shower every week
and have you checked ZL cause it is smaller with same 5inch screen
it's lighter also it has a better sound since its not rugged
Thanks for your reply about the ZL. According to the Sony website it's a few grams heavier but a decent bit smaller dimension wise. It's not available over here yet, but I'm going to keep an eye out for it.
I'd be interested to hear opinions about two issues that have come up in the reviews:
1) Software flaws that require the phone to be restarted to resolve
2) How the phone feels against your ear during calls - this sounds a bit of a strange one I admit!
Finally, does anyone have any information about the cost of Sony replacing the battery. Having replaced the battery (quite easily) on my Samsung Galaxy after about a year I'd be interested to know how easy/costly it is on a device such as this. I know Apple replace them on the iPhones for £55.
If it was my decision I would get a n4. Not only does it trounce the XZ in benchmarks but you get the vanilla android experience and you'll always be on the cutting edge when it comes to software updates. If 4G is a must then its the XZ you'll want although the hspa+ on the n4 is more than fast enough. Also, If you need the best shooter you can get then the XZ is also your best bet although again the nexus 4 is still not awful with its 8mp camera. Both phones will require a wipe down every once in a while due to their design (the nexus 4 has a gorilla glass back). I don't own a nexus 4 myself but quite a bit of my friends do and while only one of them has shattered the back cover, I've read many stories of people who absolutely despise the Nexus 4 claiming the back will shatter at the slight impact, however this can easily be worked around with a nice beefy case if you're worried.

I'm sort of in the same boat, I sold my iPhone 5 and brought a nexus 4.
I'm happy with it to a point but I'm really interested in the Z, I'm not sure why but it looks amazing.
I've never really played with a Z apart from a demo handset in phone shop but it looked wicked.
I think the main thing I got the nexus for was the updates, I'm happy with the performance of the phone, battery life could be better but apart from that, the nexus is a really good phone.
But if I had the chance to swap for a xperia Z then I would definitely swap.

I wouldnt make the jump or wouldnt pay extra 200 for XZ over nexus 4, its a good phone but not a lot of dev for it, so far we have 1 kernel developer and maybe 4-5 good roms dev after 3 months coming out. I dint think it was a big jump from S3 to XZ.
CM10.1 is on here but there are a lot of bugs including memory leak. XZ is comparable to N4 but I dont think it can compete with HTC one or S4 and thats coming from someone who own the phone for more than a month.
P.s Dont come on this forum and ask for opinion, youtube and look at your options, most on here are either Fanboy or Sony employee.

that's all rest its bull****, you cant compare point per point every stuff
are you willing to spend over 500/600 euros for such mobile phone?
that's your first question to figure out
personally i m focused much about aesthetic and design, XZ is one of most if not the most beautiful smartphone ever made
it s even prettier than iPhone 5
focus on those things,
XZ = design and powerful
Nexus = quality / cost almost unbeatable, Android Update

Its really not more powerful (on paper it is) and the nexus 4's design isnt too shabby either.

Cyanogenmod doesn't have a memory leak. The only bugs are the speakerphone doesn't work in calls, 1.5 second wake lag and apparently hdmi out doesn't work. It's perfectly good as a daily driver.

That wasn't a memory leak though, it was a gpu scaling issue and has been fixed (for me at least). It was a very minor issue and I wouldn't have even noticed if it wasn't pointed out.
Others have pointed out the price difference. This is absolutely right. Having the N4, if the XZ wasn't given to me, I wouldn't have gotten it. Between the 2, the N4 is half the price. If you're looking to spend money on one or other, the N4's definitely a bigger bang for the buck. While I do firmly believe that the XZ is a better all around phone, I can't honestly say that the differences you get warrant the additional 300 bucks.
Well I guess it depends on where you live but I'd only save 40SEK (About 6.50USD) A month on the Nexus 4.
And the salesman was really pushing the nexus4 so I guess it isn't to popular here in Sweden either. So the choice was easy for me.
Aannyyway, I went with the Z, obviously. Mostly for the water resitance as i broke my S2 from water damage and my arc got dropped once to (but it survived)
I love this phone, I don't have any issues with it. Except that you NEED to buy good screen protector, one with lifetime warranty perhaps.
You do not wan't to scratch the Anti-Shatter Filter. ( I actually returned mine because I did and got it replaced)
Thanks for all of your inputs. I feel a lot more informed, but I'm not sure if I'm any closer to making a decision.
The more I think about it though the more interested I am in the 'pure Android' experience. I might try and bide my time and wait and see if the S4 'Nexus' ships internationally, or if there is any noise towards the end of the year about a Nexus 5.

Xperia Z has open AOSP Sources, with time there will be a perfect AOSP rom, and the roms we've got now are perfectly fine, they're great actually, the Carbonrom is almost flaw free. and Cyanogenmod works great as a daily driver, few lag bugs and radio isn't working afaik.
I paid as much for the xperia z then I would for the nexus 4. And I get waterproof and bigger screen. So it was easy to make the call and expendable memory is nice too. Both would cost 300 euros. Defiantly the Xperia Z is the better phone for the same price.

Thinking about picking up the XZ, advice plz..

I currently have the Gs3 on Verizon but my contract is up and I am considering the move to T-Mobile (T-Mobile has great coverage where I live.). Im considering getting the Xperia Z. I've always owned a galaxy phone; Vibrant, S2, S3.... My wife has the s4. I'm really getting bored of the galaxy line and don't care for the s4 compared to the s3. I've really been interested in the XZ since it first debuted. Is it worth it? Any advice.
Ps- Don't care for Verizon, they don't have a wide variety of good phone options (IMO).

Do it. Simple as. Phone capabilities with other similar hardware phones so ports become easier. Awesome developers here. Also it's a great, slim and good looking phone.

Go for it. You'll get updates faster than the htc one and the ui is actually beautiful. I learned my lesson.
only downside is bootloader is unlockable and it seems there is no dev around that is willing to put in the work to unlock it. so that means no custom kernels no cm,aokp,or p.a. but if that isnt a deal breaker for you its a GREAT piece of hardware with a great ui:good:

Not really faster ... it took how much 4 months for you to get 4.2.2 and its still buggy , for one took 2 months and it's still the most optimised device ever existed , one word lag free .. as for ui isnt the sense acclaimed best looking skin.... anyway won't go into debate with you it's more of a personal preference.
@ op
I'd suggest you to take a look at what you need from the phone then choose the device that suits your needs.
Either way xz is a great device.

im pretty sure i said at least... and i have wifi bluetooth nfc and throw on all day long. thats more than enough battery for the average user and i have got 50+ hours with over 4 hours screen time. if you dont have anything productive to say you should just keep it to your self bro
If you have the money and can wait a month or 2 than do that as Xperia Honami is coming that is most likely going to be unveiled in the beginning of September. It is however gonna be significantly more expensive when it comes out as most top phones are. Otherwise I can tell you that it is a great phone and waterproofing has already helped me save my phone once, any other would need a replacement. Check out my video, maybe it will help you decide as well
Depends upon how you use it
Sony xz - if you need a classy lukin phone
Htc one - if you use your phone for texting cos as far as I used, I feel the screen is too big to handle .and loudspeaker of xz is a way lower than htc one. Super lcd is better than tft.

Gotta have the water resistance that XZ offers. Dropped mine in the toilet after taking a dump (yeah - gross, I know)
Rinsed it, dried it and good as gold
Imagine if that happened with HTC 1 or some other device?

My previous phone was the Samsung Galaxy S3 and to me, that phone had one good thing - battery life. Otherwise, it was overhyped and not worth the money that I rather could lay on one of the other 2012 high / middle end phones back in november last year. However..
The Sony Xperia Z C6603 is one hell of an well built beast and the dev-support is pretty outstanding.. CM, PA, AOSP / AOKP and a lot of good stock based custom ROMS. Hey, we even got Doomlord that is bringing extended functionalities to the Z with his Doomkernel, that is worth the money all alone
Go with the Xperia Z, dude!
