R: [ROM] Stock Archos Firmware 4.0.28 | Root version !
Hi Surdu_petru!
First of all thanks for your contributions...
Then... i use clean_slim& fast v2 rom with supercharge script...do you think there'll be a v3 with the new firmware/kernel? Is there any way for me to have the advantages of the new official release (if any)?
Thanks again

Hi !
Also , this root version have a smoll avantage : init.d support !
so, you can check scripts ( putting any scripts on /system/etc/init.d - the script will be run automatic on every boot ! ) ...so you can take advantage of faster performance, if you know what script to put! :good:
I'll make a deodex version with busybox in , init.d support and increase /data speed ! ( nothing more , because I can not test it ...)
Good luck !

If you want i test for you stability and more tweak

Which of the multiple releases of the Archos 4.0.28 firmware are you basing you rooted versions on surdu_petru?
Listed below are the dates I downloaded what was listed as the 4.0.28 firmware from the Archos website, the size that was listed on the website at that time, and the true downloaded file size.
Feb. 25 -- Listed on site: 210,030 Kb -- Actual size: 215,070,152 bytes
Feb. 28 -- Listed on site: 210,040 Kb -- Actual size: 215,080,008 bytes
Mar. 02 -- Listed on site: 210,046 Kb -- Actual size: 215,086,104 bytes
Seems like Archos has a really bad habit of changing things behind people's backs WITHOUT telling anyone what they have changed. I've caught them pulling this crap before several months back also. It really doesn't make sense to keep using the save version number when the change things, and I consider it totally dishonest to not inform people about the changes.

Hi !
Take a look here !

thanks surdu, I was worried you might have left us once you didn't get your g9 back.
For everyone else, after testing since shortly after Surdu uploaded this rom I have found this update isn't bug free, I have now lost my GPS. The system can see it after a reboot, but I can no longer get a fix at all even using all the old tricks. Obviously this is down to Archos and its unlikely we are going to see a fix.

I cleared AGPS data (in GPS Test Plus) and got a fix in 37 seconds.

Tried clearing agps too but to no avail

Mine won't lock if it is hot, but I think will maintain lock after getting hot..
I use a program called GPS Aids Free from the Play Store, set to 'Other' device, and do all three procedures too.

[MOD] Running an MCR Custom ROM? | Save 20MB+ RAM | Easy Update Zip Included

Included In MCR and derivatives from Fr15 onward - No need to patch!
Introduction
Removing the LG 'Software Update' function from your phone will give you back 20MB or more of RAM. This app runs all the time and restarts if it's killed. The thing is, if you're running a custom ROM this function will do little for you. It may notify you of an update but no updates will install over the top of your custom rom. And you get all your update notifications from here right?
However, simply removing the application package (OmaDmclient.apk) causes a problem with Settings. If the client app is removed the Settings | About Phone menu force closes. You save the 20MB RAM but you have an annoying consequence.
Removing this function provides a ~6% memory boost, a slight reduction in data use and an unquantifiable saving of CPU cycles.
Details
The relevant code is in Settings.apk, in factory ROM V10a (only some variants?) the OTA code is not active but simply taking the entire Settings.apk from V10a does not work on V10b/c. So what I did to address this:
Reverse engineered Settings.apk from V10a and V10b/c
Extracted code from V10a (java/com/android/settings/DeviceInfoSettings)
Inserted said code into V10b/c, replacing OTA code
Recompiled Settings.apk minus OTA code
Only LG code is included, none of mine, I've just ported it from one version to the next
And this allows the OTA client app to be removed without any negative consequences.
Compatibility
This is compatible with the LG Optimus 2x only, it will probably break something on the G2x variant.
This mod is not compatible with CyanogenMod for the Optimus 2x (it is unnecessary)

Included In MCR and derivatives from Fr15 onward - No need to patch!
Download
For Users - ClockworkMod Recovery Update Zip
Compatible with all ROM's based on MCR (MoDoCo) Fr4 and above (this is most at the moment)
Check with your ROM chef and make a backup if you're not sure
Download: LG-P990-OTA-Client-Eater-update.zip
Install from SD card in Recovery (installs new Settings and removes LG OTA client)
Hit Thanks below
For Chefs - To include in ROM's
Remove OmaDmclient.apk from /system/app/
Download: Settings-No-OTA-Client.apk
Rename and replace Settings.apk in /system/app/
Test by ensuring Settings | About Phone does not FC

Closer to stock Android one step at a time...
Enjoy!

No problem.
It will be 372 with 20MB additional available inside this. So you have the same total RAM but you will be using ~20MB less of it.
Not 392 sorry.
actually why we just got 372 ram while the spec is 512 mb? wheres the rest?
back to the topic, is it u mean paul's rom cant use this apk?

The rest is used as video RAM...
Paul's ROM, and all ROM's based on Paul's ROM *can* use this.
Tested it. Seems to be working fine.
I tryed it now,
FR12 all ok..
Thanks
tested on fr8, it works.
Tested on FR12 - Looks good, no fc
Works like charm.
Should be included in Custom ROM´s
MoDaCo FR12 Fear Edition 5.0 working fine!
Thanks for testing, first post updated
Nice one guys, thanks for testing and feedback. I've run out of "Thanks" for the day so I'll have to catch up later...
First post updated with update.zip and details for ROM chefs. If you're using a custom ROM, point this out to them, it's free!
Argh, sorry for the noobishness of this, but how do you remount /system/ to be r/w?
Works fine on TK-ROM v0.5.7
Thanks alot!

or
busybox mount -o,remount -rw /system
But there's an update.zip in the first post now if you like
Thanks - for some reason, "adb remount" didn't work when I first got the phone, so I didn't bother trying again
Worked like a charm! Thanks!
Only thing I noticed was that 3G data seemed to have been broken after reboot, but I cleared Market data and cycled Airplane mode and all is well now.
Am using a RomKitchen 1.6 build with cpasjuste's kernel.
thank you so much!
i was looking for it for a long time..
MoDaCo FR12, it works great, no FC
Thanks a lot mate
Has anyone noticed any improvement, or does it seem the same???

waiting for upload to finish that was very quick work sir!
I'm not sure if I'll update, in "test firmware thread" it was reported that pdf reading still is a problem for the 4.0.6 firmware.
BTW- initramfs are quite universal- ICS init still can boot honeycomb (Multiboot init works fine, Letama's init+cwm works fine but I didn't test CWM yet)
Hi, so this is 4.0.6 rooted based on the new fw that came out just today? NOT the test2 FW, right?

Thank you surdu_petru!
Do you suggest to wipe after the firmware upgrade from 4.0.5? Thanks.
great job
but i wait [email protected]
hi surdu_petru it may be useful, even if 100% should be a pure case. I have always had less trouble (crashes, reboots) with your "light rom" than other rom (ics blue / rooted rom). On my hot g9 101 the most stable rom is your "ICS Firmware 4.0.5 - Overclock Edition". thank you

So just basically, there isn't any way to gat the multiboot to work with both [email protected] and Stock rooted FW with multiboot? I don't really know how to handle your .update files. I currently have Ubuntu and [email protected] v1 in /data/local and modified Multiboot Kernel & initramfs. Could you tell me how to get this Stock rooted with my other images? Thanks

Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda premium
Thank you, surdu_petru!
One thing I wonder about: After installing this updated all my homescreens where reset to factory settings (all homescreens clear, only a few standard apps on homescreen 3).
Every other time I installed one of your modified ROMs or any of the original ROMs my homescreens stayed as I set them up before.
Am I the only one this happened to?
All the other settings where kept, only the homescreens where reset.
Yes me too. I guess the update reinstalls launcher. Try to make a backup for next time

Hi, I need a root rom with a kernel that supports "loop devices". Does this kernel update support "loop device"? Thanks in advance.
Best.
Nice, this firmware worked.
But are you not allowed to factory reset after using this? After factory reset I can't boot anymore.
GPS now working
Thanks for this Surdu. Can confirm that both the Archos stock and this ROM are compatible with GPS now (I get instant locks). I am a happy man.
BTW, is the kernal you included all the G9 to overclock? I have a 4460 and am getting quadrant score of 1781 with a max and min @ 1.2 GHz (Performance Governor).

I would not reccomend you these actions. However Archos stuck numbers of G9 and G10 firmwares, I don't think they made inner content the same and compatable with both generations of tablets.
Hi Surdu_Petru, to install this rom having installed the AOKP rom, to do some special process?
Thank you

Thanks ...but seems that are there some issue ! ...also ARCHOS temporarily withdraw version 4.0.24 !
Checking right now to download official firmware 4.0.24 from Asus site => 403 - Forbidden
No problem ....I'll root the next update 4.0.24 maybe stable !

Yeah i realized that already, i guess they'll fix it soon... anyway i guess the Android system itself is O.K.
Maybe some problems with the bootloader or initrd...
In fact loader and avboot got updated as well.
The binary of avboot 5.05.000009 C0x00 is now half the size of the former binary while loader slightly increased.
Anyway hope we got a stable version soon and people might restore their devices.
Again thanks for your high speed action
Best regards,
scholbert
stock firmware quadrant score I/O 4500 firmware root 4.0.24 quadrant score I/O 795 I do not understand why?
muti642, likely Surdu used his compiled kernel usicg which didn't give my archos any improvement in I/O

Hi!
For root version you need to use the stock zImage ( builded from Archos).
So I not compiled any kernel for stock 4.0.24 root version.

Hi!
..since Archos release the new update ( 11/10/2012) - I'll root soon the new update ( maybe stable ) 4.0.24 !
This root version based on Firmware 4.0.24 updated by Archos on 10/10/2012 will be retired ...because on some devices does not seem to work !
Today's new update 4.0.24 is really old update 4.0.7 ( Android 4.0.3 ) !

I'm going crazy I'm super archos hang on 4.0.25 and without SDE, I want to break the tablet in half so it makes me going crazy
So I managed to install j SDE via the old method, HE WAS time I lost patience.

HI
what's the best GOVERNOR for save battery duration??
Decided today to root and install SDE my new Archos g9 8gb and install this rooted rom, unfortunately as I had applied the standard 4.0.25 firmware there was an error when trying to install the SDE.
I tried returning to stock 4.0.7 but that now reports it is too old for my rom.
Looks like Ill be staying on the standard rom for some time yet lol
TrOjAn
****UPDATE****
Reading back I saw muti642 had the same issue, after trying the OLD outdated method I have now been able to install SDE and the latest rom.. thanks all

Hi!
You do the right steps for install the last firmware 4.0.25 !
If you have problem with any app, please uninstall apk and try to reinstal from PlayStore!
Also you need to check what governor is the best on savebattery! , for sure is not hotplug!
Good luck!

I had similar problems with some applications google owner, and I resolved by reinstalling ! :good:
( also for full compatibility please , first use English to see if is there some issue ! )
The best Governor for our tablet seems to be hotplug, is the only one who knows how to manage both processor cores !
...also you can take a look here ( Android CPU governors explained ! )

The problem was error 221 or 223 depending on where I was and what I was doing.. basically::
On a NON rooted Archos 8gb 101 I updated to the official 4.0.25 (which worked) and then I wanted to install SDE / Root.
I was unable to do either using the newest ( link here ) method but the OLD method ( link here ) worked, that then allowed me to install SDE and then a custom rom.
On a side note: Can anything be done to improve the audio volume? When I watch a movie I have to use earphones as the speaker volume is too low?

the problem was only after doing the update from 4.0.24 to 4.0.25 installing the SDE was no longer possible error code 221.
to solve it took Roote and install the sde of the old method (with adb), I have the install your room.
