[Q] Samsung Captivate USB issue - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I've done quite a lot of searching, and I can find almost no one else with the same issues.
Basically, when I plug in the phone via usb, the computer will not recognize the device. I have tried every mode (mass storage, kies, usb debug, etc). However, it will charge. I have tried several cables, including those I know transfer data. When I try to put it into mass storage mode, I do not get a notification on the notification bar telling me to mount the SD or USB storage. I'm not sure if this is a hardware & software issue, or just one of the two.
I work in IT, so I'm not new to repairing hardware or software. Just trying to find SOME leads. The guy who owned this before me didn't do a great job of putting the phone back together when he tried to repair the screen (has a greenish tint, thought it was a loose connection but it may just be defective or needs to be cleaned. Either way, not my concern as of right now).
If anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated
PS I have tried SEVERAL drivers on SEVERAL computers, Win7, Win8, OSX Lion, Lubuntu 12.10
Also tried putting the phone in Download mode to see if Odin/heim-something or other would recognize it, no luck.
Wondering if the usb isn't fully connected to the port, and if I should take off the back housing, plug it in, and see if it works that way?

Other than charging, when you connect to a pc do you get a device malfunction message in windows? We know the +5v and ground work since it charges so if you get the malfunction message in windows its a short in the data pins. If there is no message, just charging and no reaction from the phone other than the charging indicator, I'd say there is no contact to one or both data pins. I'd look in the micro usb port to make sure the pins are straight (and there lol) and if it looks dirty, use a shot of crc electronic cleaner in the port (battery out and screen facing up).
Of coarse this is if it isn't software related which it very well could be, but sounds more hardware related to me....

Yep, that's exactly what pops up. I can't see very well right now (at work, have no magnifying glass here). I remember a long time ago having a couple bent data pins in my old BlackBerry Curve lol, ended up popping em back in. Hopefully, that will be the same case here.
I appreciate the quick reply, wasn't even thinking of that :fingers-crossed:

No problem:good: Good luck!!:fingers-crossed:

On a slightly-unrelated note, did some browsing and came up with this quick question.
Is there anyway to root the Captivate on 2.3.5 without PC connection? (I can send files to the phone via an external SD, just can't use Super One Click etc right now).
If not, couldn't I just flash back to 2.2 using recovery(stock, but as long as the update.zip signed correctly[will be stock firmware so I don't see why it wouldn't] it should work right?) and use z4root?

Well, to follow up:
I see no broken or misplaced pins, it all looks correct to me. I will try to upload a photo tonight.
In the meantime, I managed to brick (I think). Accidentally installed the wrong kernel from my SD (speedmod, which I forgot was for Froyo). Now I have CWM, but I cannot mount via usb still, and since I can't access the external sd from cwm, I'm stuck either in recovery mode or stuck at the Samsung screen.
Anyone have any ideas besides just setting it aside for a paper weight?

Does that version of cwm have the option to flash from ext sd? Go to install zip in cwm and see if there is the option to flash zip from extsd. If so, then you should be all set putting the right kernel or rom on your ext sd and flash away. Not sure I'm the best person to answer your question, but I would start there I guess.

U can't get Root for a Captivate running Android 2.3.5 without a proper working micro usb port.
U can't flash back to Stock Froyo without a proper working micro usb port. (Unless u had Root already and then u could use Mobile Odin from the Play Store).
Only update.zip files signed by Samsung would work in the Stock 3e Recovery.
Stock Eclair had the 2e Recovery that did not require the signature verification.
Sounds like u need a new micro usb port.
Did u take a read at this thread...Captivate - PC Connection Issues...
If that thread is no help then it probably is a hardware issue. :/

1. Yes, actually you can. It's a temp root, but it works (how else would I have been able to flash the wrong kernel). I forget the apk I used, not on market anymore. I think it was like Mizu m9 or something, actually worked was kind of surprised.
2. Stock 3e is nbd now, I can boot into CWM 2.5.1.0 [which does have boot from ext-sd, but it either says it can't mount it or no files found. Not sure if its a version issue, if I could mount it and access the files on the ext-sd somehow this would all be solved and I'd love you guys <3
Yeah, I looked into the new USB port thing.I've tried every driver known to man lol. I think I'll end up getting the port repaired from that one website that was suggested, I think its $35 or so no big deal.
But can anyone confirm that CWM 2.5.1.0 can read an ext-sd? It's odd, because I assume on the captivate it gets mounted at /sdcard/external_sd, and when I look for a zip file to flash from the sd, I can see that folder, but trying to go into it just causes the message "no files found"

Gonna check this meizu m9 root method out.... hmmm...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium

Go for it, once installed it's pretty straight forward lol. But make you you dl the superuser app from the market (I did it before, just in case that matters). Mobile odin worked fine, adb wireless worked fine, etc.
But I just tried partitioning my SD card, and it still won't read in CWM. I tried mounting /sd-ext but every time I do it just says Error: can't mount

Yeah...i'm just curious as to how that root method works...since a method like that (gaining Root without having to use a connection to a pc) has never been done before with the Captivate since its release.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium

I'm not really sure, I didn't think it would work but it did...not sure what exploit it uses either. Did you try it? Wanted to check if it was just my phone or others too...
Sent from my Rooted PantechP8000 using xda app-developers app

Nope...haven't tried it, but am definately gonna check into it. I will post back if it works or not (if i decide its ok to try) when i can...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium

Gotcha, sounds good. Yeah not too sure if it's safe or not, was just trying anything.
On another note, what format does my SD card need to be in to be read by CWM Recovery? I had it set to exFat, Fat32, and ext2/fat32 and I still isn't being read or able to mount :\.

I was gonna say FAT32 full format as i have read that suggested by others, but looks like u tried that. The card may be bad...idk for sure though.
(Btw...would u mind attaching a copy of the meizu m9 root apk ? Thx.)
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium

I may try fat32 again. Interesting though, I had a zip of another version of CWM on the INTERNAL SD which I CAN access.
When I install that (not really install it, just run it), I can mount sd-ext but not /sdcard/ lol...says it's busy...I'm starting to think this is a permissions issue more than anything.....
Sure, it's on my dropbox I can just download it quick and upload it here.
EDIT: idk what's with the extension on the file, should just put it on an sd card and install fine.

I have EXACTLY the same issue x0ne215, has you managed to resolve this issue? Or just replaced microusb?

The M9 root method did work afaik. That being said, it's not safe at all to flash with a broken USB port.

Samsung galaxy s 'usb brick'

Hi, to all.
I'm not sure i am the only one who has this problem on i9000,(i suppose not),
in any case i haven't found any thread related for our phone. So i thought it would be a good idea to start one,and if others have same problem, post here, so we can gather as much info we can.And maybe find a solution.
ANY HELP IS VERY APPRECIATED.
From what I've read on forum it's defined as: ''when a phone perfectly works but it is unable to make its usb micro port work in any way''.(Except charging). To precise, i mean make phone visible in download mode or able to enter in download mode, usb drivers install, transferring files to/from computer to internal memory and sdcard.
The only threads i found are for HTC devices, with no clear solution.
User Bejda gently gave me a link on a French forum with a similar problem.
It has alot of interesting info and personal opinions about the problem.
http://galaxys-team.fr/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=20841
Another link is this one referring to a program that can unbrick and make functional the usb port.
http://galaxys-team.fr/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=22257
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:
1)GOOGLE DRIVERS (As i use cm7) --Didnt work in my case
2)Other cm7 version or other kernel from CWM --Didnt work in my case
3)Other pc usb port --Didnt work in my case
4)Other pc or format --Didnt work in my case
5)Other usb cable --Didnt work in my case
6)Mobile Odin --Cant use that to put stock firmware as i need to repartition and pit, and these options are disabled. Can they be enabled??
7)Clean Usb port/Check if it is ok --Didnt work in my case
8)Use Jig -- Didn't work either.
9)Use the program from the above forum??
10)Heimdall --Finds uknown device with 0000 ids etc,and fails to install device.Does work.Tried latest version.
11)Tried toggling BT--Didnt work.
12)Having the phone connected to notebook and then turning the notebook on -- Didnt work in my case
12)APPLYING CM9 ICS! -- YES THIS SOLVED MY PROBLEM!!USB DISCS WORKING SO AS ODIN ON DL MODE!!!!!THANK GOD!
Can't think something more..
About my case:
The phone works perfect but i cant manage my pc to 'see' my phone.Charging works.
The 2 discs of the phone
or even odin cant be seen.I tried different pc's,usb ports, usb drivers/controllers,cables,download or not mode, usb debbugging on/off , samsung and google drivers.
Other cm7 versions or kernel versions.Formatting the pc also.Whereas my friends phone on pc works perfectly, mine 8 out of 10 times is not recognised ,or found as uknown device.
Discs (internal and sd) also not shown on my computer.
On 3-4 days of trying i only managed to get it shown for 1 minute(only discs) ,didnt have time to try odin,as it disconnected (without me touching anything). After that it did the same before(not recognized etc).
I also dissembled my phone and i can say usb port seems perfect.
I was thinking if i manage to make odin work i can repartion and (update bootloader????) also put stock firmware/kernel that may fix it ,or not???
Or at least with stock i can try samsung's warranty.
Anyway for now i use My phone Explorer (via wifi) that can access eveything (contacts, sms, calendar, both disks on root folders etc,and its free)
because ftp apks dont work for me.
I ran into the same problem a few weeks ago, tested it all that you write about, but eventually I gave up and sent it to Samsung, they changed the circuit board on the warranty and now it's on its way back from service.
I said I tried to update the phone in Kies and that something went wrong ....
If you have a custom ROM on your phone, see if you can "destroy the software" so that they can not get into the phone and find that you have broken the warranty.
Thanks for your answer.
Well,you were on custom firmware/kernel?
I don't know if this can be done as i am on cm7 and i use a non stock kernel.
if you are on a custom rom you could try odin for mobile to flash a stock rom and send it to samsung (if you are still under waranty) for repairs/checks

i had this problem so many times even with my ex-galaxy spica.
My solution is very weird/unimaginable : One day, my spica remained plugged in my pc portable turned off. When i booted my pc portable,in my bios screen, my phone said it was connected in USB. It was the better day of my life
Precision : my pc portable is very old ( compaq presario R3200 )
From that momment, every USBrick was just matter of time

Thanks,
sorry i read too fast.Problem remains also even with Mobile Odin.
I am on modified kernel and cm7.
If i try to use mobile odin to put stock firmware kernel i will soft brick my phone as i need to repartition and pit,and these options on mobile odin are disabled

Repair to a shop or samsung?
Claimed warranty or not?
i've got this problem to, you've probably got a faulty usb port, look into the port and see if you can find all the copper connectors, just today i tried a brand new usb cable, an that works!!!
only... it works 1 time, the first time the copper connectors aren't pushed into the cable, just look at an used cable and see what i mean, the connectors in the middle are pushed in....
what i think is that if you use a set of tweezers to pull them 1-2 mm out, (so they are lined up with the outer connectors) you can make contact again, make sure you're already in debugging mode, if you have used the cable you have to do it again..
btw, i havent tried the tweezers, i had a noever used cable laying around, but it's probably the same idea, so the same effect.... please reply if it worked or not...
btw^2 you're getting the "unknown usb device" error are you not?
Sorry for being late. These days i was ill
Yes maybe i have a faulty port.
But i can't claim warranty because i have glitch kernel and cm7 kang .
I just want to try 1st everything else possible , before a repair.
Also i don't like alot the fact that i will stay without my phone.
I will also try these days to keep it plugged on my turned off notebook (as oxmoss said)
and also try cm9 with cm9 kernel (as Dopedangel said).
Only sometimes (like 1 out of 10) it gives me unknown usb or usb malfunctioned, and (like 2 out of 1000!) it found the phone correctly.
These days , some times if i try to 'move' the cable near the phone it finds the uknown device
but i cant do nothing more. And sometimes i also hear the sound of the speakers getting 'stacked' when connect the usb..
So it must be the usb...
But the pins seem perfect. Also the ones inside the motherboard...
I tried with tweezers but nothing,as everything seems ok...
Anyway for now i use My phone Explorer (via wifi) that can access eveything (contacts, sms, calendar, both disks on root folders etc,and its free)

Anyway i will try the above solutions and update these days the thread.
Thanks again

Computer doesn't recognize the NOTE anymore. (ADB or drive mapping)

My laptop (and other computers I've tried) stopped seeing the note.
When I plug it in it only says charging but I don't see a new device added on Windows.
ADB says waiting for device. If i disable usb debugging a message about MTP comes up upon connection but I don't see any drives mapped in windows at all. Device manager doesn't show any android or untecognized devices.
I tried uninstalling samsung usb drivers and reinstalling them. Nothing helps. I am starting to think I have a hw issue. Anything else you can think of friends?

#$%^@! Samsung USB drivers will be the death of us all.
I experienced something similar the other day: had the standalone drivers installed which worked well, then suddenly stopped for reasons known only to CIA and KGB, I suppose.
This is what helped:
1. uninstalled drivers
2. installed fresh Kies *yecch*
Will give it a try mate. Thanks!

update : things aren't looking good.
I did a full wipe, tried a different kernel and installed KIES.
Nothing helps, the comp doesn't even make that sound when a new usb is plugged in so it doesn't even try to look for drivers or mount it.
Is it really HW issue or can i still try anything ?

Im pretty sure you already tried it but...
I had such a problem once. Turned out that my USB cable was broken, it could only charge but data-lines were inactive. I have no idea if Note uses the same line for both charging and data sync, but maybe it's not the phone - but the cable ?

Went to another comp now, which didn't have any samsung **** installed on it, upon first connection it tried installing the drivers and failed (obviously). I then installed samsung usb drivers, and ever since - same problem - comp doesn't see the phone.

Hello Dr!
So... i tried flashing ICS via mobile ODIN to try and see if it works - nothing. I tried a full wipe on stock GB - same.
I tried 3 different usb cables, and three comps - same same.
What i did notice now, is that if i keep trying to connect it for 20-30 times, it might work once out of those 30 and next time it won't work again.
hardware right ?
It seems to be hardware only.
But as you have to move to service centre, once make last try to flash using pc odin. N i think, which is requires for warranty purpose too.

Defective/dirty USB socket perhaps?
Could be. I really don't know what to think other than a faulty hardware. I tried blowing compressed air into the usb port. Other than changing the usb port assembly I don't see another way. I am with no warranty as well as I bought it from HK when they just came out and it is my understanding that Samsung only respects the warranty within the country the device is bought.

Compressed air usually unable to remove tar from pin
If you want to clean it, better use cotton soacked with spirit/petrol (after removing battery), as it evaporates rapidly. N let it dry completely.
Any update on your situation, mfractal?
Unfortunately no. I've tried cleaning the contacts but that also didn't help.
Thinking about trying to replace the usb charging port assembly but can't seem to find a dealer that sells it. Also not sure it'll help....

Dude, I too had such an issue earlier, but what I did was, I tried installing an application @ the market named "USB Mass Storage Watcher" and as soon as I installed and configured so, I got my drive identified immediately. May seem pretty noob, but no harm in giving a try....
didn't work.... same as before, only charging.

[Q] i9000 boots to black screen NO DOWNLOD MODE OR RECOVERY

Ok so I purchased an i9000M that was advertised as broken (got it for cheap) to see if I could get it going for my step daughter. I turn it on.... I get the samsung boot screen and goes black when it should be booting OS.
Windows still recognizes it somewhat. If I look in device manager under "portable devices" It shows a "j" and "k" drive that are identified as i9000 and i9000 sd or something like that. Although Windows sees it.... It wont mount these drives unfortunately.
Things I've tried ( Before someone suggests I use a JIG............. It doesn't and will not work on this phone)
USB JIG (tested and working on my Hercules)
SD Card Partition (EXT4 and FAT32) because I suspect borked internal storage
SD Card Partition (ReiserFS and FAT32) Still nothing......... then I realized the phone probably wasnt rooted
3 button combos ( every single combination) nada
plugging in USB cable while holding volume up and down...
ADB Reboot recovery/download ( not recognized because I cant turn on debugging)
ETC ETC ETC........
I have been searching google for hours for some kind of clue as to what can be done other than JTAG repair and All I come up with (no matter what site im on) is " Use a USB JIG" duhhhh Its getting rather annoying.
Im no stranger to flashing ( no expert) but this one has me stumped. I was considering buying a RIFFbox anyways but I thought maybe some experienced users out there might be able to suggest something.
My hope is that something can be done with the J and K drive that was mentioned. Perhaps I can format and somehow push a rom straight to the internal storage without any assistance from the phone itself...... I know..... wishful thinking. or perhaps boot straight from external SD???? That would be interesting!
More to this.... I realize this question has probably been asked a million times because it seems to be a common issue on this phone but I suppose my long winded question really boils down to my last paragraph which I havent seen suggested yet.
EDIT: I have a Windows 7 AND kubuntu 12.04 dual boot if any suggestions require linux
Any help would be greatly appriciated.

My Android Solutions should get you started but FIRST ensure your battery is no malfunctioning and Battery contacts are good and not loose.

Thanks. i will have a look and experiment tomorrow.
I'll report back my progress
if it pops up when you plug it into the computer, check if it does in odin. if does in there too try to flash a stock rom. or better yet take this download and follow the read me intructions, except the dl mode part cause you said it doesnt work. try both with the phone on and off. no it isnt the bell version of the pom but it will work. you will problably want to root it then install galaxy s unlock tool from the market and use that to unlock the phone aswell.(cause it not the bell rom)

As I mentioned.... no download mode, therefore.... No ODIN. Unless someone has some magical way to make it work otherwise. The computer knows its an I9000 at least. Kies says its in the wrong mode and I have no UI so debugging is out of the question.
Also: Xsenmen. I was unable to get any of the tools to connect. In one section you mention that AndroPlatina attempts to connect while booting? I was unable to get this to happen. I even tried the "heat trick" to no avail

[Q] Formatted /system, Download mode not working, extremiest HW USB modding

I-896, from the start USB was working in Lo-Speed mode when data transferring (1 Mb/s speed). I was too stupid to format /system from CWM and then reboot to Download mode which wasn't working (USB Device attached not recognized, blind ODIN and Kies). Can I somehow flash stock ROM? Is this an phone's MicroUSB-Female issue or deep hardware's one(processor, PCB)? Here are some photos of me trying to connect USB directly:
Did u see this sticky thread about Captivate - PC Connection Issues, etc? ...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33227541
Did u try a Jig to get into Download mode ?? Here is a thead on how to make a Jig...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9238587

Yes, I've seen this thread (and many others too, done a small research for about 1 hour). Tried all the solutions from the threads. My phone easily switches to Download mode, but it isn't recognized by PC. And it's not a driver/cable problem because my second Captivate works properly.
To be more concrete: code 43 in Device Manager, Device not recognized in tray.
since you've got the phone opened up, clean the micro usb connector and check resistance of each connector contact to test point on board. then check resistance between pins. if 2 and 3 are shorted, power chip wont pass data to phone.
also, if you enabled fast usb charging in kernel, that would be problem.
you want battery out, good contact cleaner. get completely dry and clean before applying power.
Have never using Fast Charging (only GB ROMs and kernels), bought a new captivate with broken screen, now trying to get the phone working.
Why isn't power chip allowing to pass data to phone? I haven't normal multimeter at the moment. Can you advise me how to flash Captivate w/o USB? Is there a way? And, maybe, this bug appeared because my Captivate was from Rogers, not the I-897 one?

Well as far as I know, the Rogers one is an international phone, which is the i9000 not i879 (not 100% sure, correct me if I'm wrong) so that could have a lot to do with it.
As for flashing w/o usb, if you have an external SD card the phone can read yes it's possible but it's not advisable because you can completely screw yourself like I did . My phone currently won't boot besides Download Mode, Recovery Mode, and the bootscreen but since I don't have USB data connectivity I can't fix the phone (when I flashed speedmod kernel, everything went fine. But it doesn't read my external, so I can't flash my phone to fix it).
If you do choose to flash without a USB, please for the love of everything holy, MAKE SURE YOU ALSO PUT THE ROM .ZIP ON THE INTERNAL SD AS WELL

Actually the Rogers version is i896 and the other is i897. To my understanding the hardware is identical and shouldn't be a problem using stuff for the 897 with the 896.
Yes, I have now tested all the parts compatibility between I-896, I-897 motherboards and camera, part with cardreader, speaker, vibrator and sim-reader. All works properly.
How can I flash the ROM using my external SD card? I can't access it through CWM (can't even mount, I think mount binary was formatted with the /system partition). Is there a guide?

I can't access it either, hence why my phone is bricked :\.
If you have no access to the internal SD, you're in the same boat as me lol. If you know for a FACT that the usb port is damaged, there's a website that will repair it for you for about $35. However, you can usually get a used cappy from ebay for around $80-$100, so if there's more issues might as well just buy a new one and use the current for spare parts.
EDIT: Excuse my last post, I forgot you had already not been able to use the phone to access the internal SD. Long day at work
Just bought I-897 with a broken screen for 33 USD. I'm wondering if I can flash my old PCB someway, even if I'll need to find a hardware tool for this. Will try checking USB port's resistance, especially 2, 3 pins as was mentioned above.
MicroUSB consists of 5 pins, and the place where USB-F port is connected to PCB has 7 (as can be seen on photo). Where can I find a pinout for this one?

USB only charges, no recognization. No way to flash with Odon/Heim.. =/

We have two Galaxy S Captivates. One connects to the computer fine, the other no longer does.
First the phone started randomly rebooting or becoming locked up. Then we had external SD issue and couldn't mount the "emmc" which, since it was using Cyanogenmod 9, was the external_sd. Pretty soon the phone was stuck at the boot animation, wouldn't get any further. So obviously I needed to reflash it, but now suddenly the USB did not even work either (it only charges). I did a factory reset and was able to get back into the OS, but when I connect the USB cable, no message pops up to connect, no matter what setting I use.
So I did a CWM restore to a much older backup. But in that one, USB is not working either now too.
I don't think it's physical, it suddenly stopped as I was trying to fix it. So is there any way to do the kind of reflash Odin and Heimdall do, but without USB? I can solder if some sort of serial cable needs to be made..
Or perhaps, if I know what COMORT it's connected to, I can do a manual choose, instead of letting Odin do it automatically? Since I can connect my other Captivate and see the name of the port...
Many thanks, I hope I really hope I can get this fixed...

Thanks, but I've read that whole post. I've tried all possible regular solutions you can find around the net. My main question now is, is there a way to flash all those core components without using Odin or Heim. Can I use my CWM? Or perhaps ADB? Is there a way to specify a specific COMORT I'd like to connect to? Or any more tech savvy solutions like a serial cable connection? I need a solution for flashing without Odin or Heimdall.

Not on the Captivate. Everything is done by Odin or Heimdall using the usb port. There's a mobile Odin but it doesn't flash bootloaders and you can't get root with it.
Have you tried cleaning the usb?
Either fix the USB by cleaning it or replacing the port, or have fun with a barely usable Captivate :\. I don't understand why they made the port so flimsy if it was such an important part of the phone, seems kinda dumb imo.
If you do happen to find a fix, please let me know, kind of in the same boat .
