Hard Plastic Case - Nexus 7 Accessories

Does anyone know if any of the snap on cases available for the Nexus 7 are made of a hard plastic? I can't tell from any of the ones on Amazon or eBay if they are a flexible rubber type that snaps over the Nexus, or if they are a hard plastic. I need one that is a hard plastic simply because I plan to cut it up, and need the pieces to retain their shape once cut.
What I basically want to do is cut out the middle section that covers the back of the Nexus, and use the 2 side pieces on the back of my dash bezel to hold the Nexus in place. Currently there is about a 10mm gap between the screen and the bezel face. If I can find a hard plastic case to mutilate, then I can slide the Nexus into the side pieces, causing it to be flush with the bezel face.
Thanks.

The official Asus-Nexus Travel Cover is a good, thin, fairly priced, hard-plastic case. So far, its my favorite of all cases , and I have tried my fair share.

Most of the ones with front covers are hard plastic, if you go for a case made of TPU it's going to be soft.

[DIY] Rubberized soft touch battery door

I love my Nexus S. Yes, the build quality is plastic, yet anything but cheap. I've seen a lot of compliments on the slick back cover (battery door). However, it's not to my taste. I find it to be overly reflective, a fingerprint magnet, and slippery to the point where I would drop my phone if it were not for the reverse chin.
Solution: DIY Soft touch battery door (rubberized back cover)
I simply applied four thin layers of spray on black PlastiDip. As in the instructions, make sure to shake the can thoroughly for a full minute and keep the can of PlastiDip a full 12-16 inches from the back cover of the phone. Wait a full 30 minutes between coats. Make sure to spray all the way around the edge of the battery door into the back of the cover. If you do not coat the edge your coating will eventually begin to peel at the edge. The easiest method is probably to mask off the contacts for the NFC antenna and spray the entire cover, inside and out. That way there is no rubber seam to peel at the edge.
Here are the results. I think the images phone2.jpg and phone3.jpg most accurately show the results. The closeups tend to make the cover look more textured than it actually appears.
PlastiDip is easily peeled off if you start at an edge, but difficult to peel off unintentionally. If I ever get bored with the finish or want to sell the phone I can remove the rubber within seconds.
yeah i used this for my galaxy S, pretty good idea actually lol
I like it. Did you sand before painting? If so what grade? Thanks in advance.
No sanding required. Just a thorough cleaning with water then spray on PlastiDip.

I dont think any sanding is needed because it simply peels off.
Is plastidip messy? because I'm gonna try this when I get home but it 20F outside and Im not wait thirty mins between coats in such weather lol. So I hope its doable in the house. However when I do mine I might put tape over the Google logo and peel it off after all dry and clean because I dont wanna lose that, I could careless about the samsung tho lol
Whats great is you dont need to sand and ruin the cover and simply peels off.
Thanks for sharing think im going to try this, might do clear color
I wonder if Walmart sells PlastiDip

But what about other cases or the front of the phone? You can't fit a regular cases now or any sort of holster. How is it in the pocket?

Even with four thin coats, it doesn't add enough bulk to prevent another case from fitting on the phone. For the screen, I use a Zagg for now until something better comes out. As for the feel in the pocket it is a little tacky. It doesn't slide in and out of the pocket as smoothly as I'd like, but in my opinion it's a necessary trade off. I still prefer the rubberized back.
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
But what happens if you put a holster/case on? Won't it degrade the rubber?
What about the NFC chip? this is what worries me about the Nexus S, the NFC relies on this "cheap, plastic" cover... The NFC chip needs to be within centimeters of the other object's NFC chip. Wouldn't this interfere? Anyone try after applying a case or using this rubberized method?
This coating doesn't add centimeters of thickness to the back, so it should be fine.
Just make sure u hold can 12"-16" from cover I was too close on my first coat so I sprayed too much on there. But it looks fine

Many thin layers works best. Also, you have to make sure the rubber on the sides is as thick as the back, and spray it all the way around the lip of the battery door. If you don't coat around the edge into the inside of the battery door your rubber will eventually begin to peel at the edge.

TPU Hybrid case with kickstand for Samsung Galaxy Note II (Review w/ Pics)

Once I got my T-Mobile Note 2, I searched the interwebs for a case that would protect the phone and make it less slippery. The quest was not an easy one, with barely any cases available, and most being replicas with different names. Additionally, none of the ones I saw offered protection around the corners, something that I find 100% essential on a case.
So after several hours on the general Galaxy Note II Accessories forum and several pages down the Amazon hole through multiple search keywords, I found the perfect case, for the time being. The case is a basic TPU S-line hybrid with an added kickstand. Nothing new or revolutionary, I'm sure, but given the lack of choices as of yet, a good one nonetheless.
The case protects, as commented, all 4 corners, and it protrudes enough that it lets you place the phone face down without suffering any damage on the screen. The kickstand works, though this is also the biggest caveat I've found.
The kickstand is on a hinge, and, to keep the case as thin as possible, the kickstand is embedded into the case. This wouldn't be such a problem, this happens on the Seidio Active, for example. However, the case is so thin that the hinges protrude too much out of the case, causing this to be the main point of contact with the surface when you place the phone on its back. It's irritating because one would hope a case would make the phone less slippery when placed on a surface than the original plastic, but hanging from two small pieces of plastic is not much better. There's always the placing the phone on its kickstand position, and that's fine, but don't think about pushing the phone hard on this position, or you'll cause the hinge to let you shift the phone to the "second" position, and, if pushed further, down to the ground.
The kickstand hasn't broken yet, but leaves uncertainty on how long it'll last. The black part of the case is grippy, specially on its sides, with the semi-see-through material being more slippery (though this is not an inconvenience, really).
All ports are well protected, but not covered, so no worries about echo issues like in other cases.
The kickstand is perfect for watching movies on the beautiful 5.5 inch screen.
The durability of the case is debatable. While I'm sure it'll withstand some falls, its purpose is more of a "now it'll not slip off my hands every time I pull it out of my pocket" than "let's toss this sucker from a 20 ft window"
This case more than serves its purpose, and at $5.98 including S&H (shipping from MN, USA), it should be in everyone's short list of capable though cheap cases.
If your phone is naked awaiting a case that fits your immediate needs, this will suffice. If you're looking for something that protects better, is more elegant, and of a known brand, the Seidio Active with Metal Kickstand is my #1 choice. But meanwhile, until it is released, I'd rather have this $6 case than go "naked".
I'm waiting for Amazon to accept all my images that I uploaded so I can provide you with images.
In the meantime, you can check out my Amazon Review here.
>>> It comes on either Black, Blue, Pink, Purple, White. I think I've also seen red, and I'm sure you can also find it on eBay.
>>> Black one seems to be "Unavailable".
Did it come with that screen protector you have installed?
I ordered one from china might get it next year LOL and also ordered another for a note 1, hopefully is as good as this one, I've had the S-line case on my S3 and even tho it was cheap i loved it.. you keep the slimness of the phone witch is important having a 5.5inch screen on the pant pockets isn't fun, imagine adding 1cm of case might aswell get the iDevice-mini.
thanks for the pics now i know what I got into...

Yeah I tried to do it so that the selling company was located in the US, just so it wouldn't take so long to arrive because I was holding the phone naked and it was slippery as hell.
The screen protector is a SPIGEN SGP Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Screen Protector Clear Steinheil [Ultra Oleophobic] [2-PACK]
Personally, I don't think the protector is the best, but I feel more comfortable about using my phone now. The safer the better. I got a scratch on my S2 with Gorilla Glass, because I figured "oh Gorilla Glass...don't need a protector". I tried to put protector when I first got it, but failed on 3 accounts. It just didn't look good. Wore it for a while till it looked even worse and I just simply removed it. And of course... Sh*t happens.
So this time, I ordered protector same time as case. Except it is fulfilled by Amazon so it took 2 days free shipping. I think the price is high, AND I have 2-3 bubbles that don't go away. Really, they aren't bubbles. They're specks of dust, and the surrounding area does not stick to the screen. I've thought about using the second protector but...uh I don't know.
"But it's Gorilla Glass 2, you don't need protector!" Not gonna fall twice for that. "But it's gonna interfere with the S Pen!" You know what, I think from time to time it does interfere. I've noticed sometimes while drawing that I might lift the pen but it still draws on the screen. Not sure if that's due to the screen protector or not...
Anyway, best of luck. Protect your phone with the first thing you find in the meantime until you get your case!
i see there's a minor bump on the kickstand that prevents the phone from laying perfectly flat on it's back. Is there' a slight wobble to it if you lay it flat and touch one side?
I just got this case in today and Im happy with what I got for the money.

Since I got the Note 2 from t mobile on the day of launch, the store was not carrying any cases so I went ahead and ordered a cheap plastic case from ebay and ran to the sprint store where they had ONE SAMSUNG OEM FLIP CASE and purchased as well. As everybody knows, this samsung OEM case DOES NOT PROVIDE SIDE/CORNER protectio and since I HAVE NO GRIP hands, I had to have every kind of protection available so I integrated both covers. Here are some sample pics. I will keep this on until I get my SPIGEN case!!!!
p.s. I know it looks kind of ghetto but at least I am protected!!!

It really is thin. This may not be the best for you, but I'd say just because of the kickstand, it may hold you over until you find a better one. Personally looking forward to Trident Aegis and Seidio Active. There's also Otterbox...

Sorry, can't help you there. I really had no problem whatsoever putting this one in. I've taken it out about a dozen times, and I've never had issues taking it out or putting it back in. I ordered the Seidio Active case, so this one will be retired soon. But while using it, my only complaint was that the stand was not reliable. That's about it.
You might want to contact the seller and get a replacement. Looks like there's something wrong with yours. Also, make sure that all ports/buttons line up, and that they didn't send you the case for the wrong phone or some such.
Good luck!
This case is "unavailable" on Amazon but there are a million of them on Ebay, in all different colors. I got one in clear because I like to show off my phone, not the case, although I know from my old iPod case that I actually like the look of a clear glass-like edge around the sides.
I just wanted to chime in that if you get the clear version, beware that it *will* stick to the back cover of the phone. It's ugly because you get these big blobs and patches, and I found it immediately unacceptable. The case only cost me $5 so I just tried sanding it down on the inside so it wouldn't stick... which technically worked, but now it's even uglier. Yeah, I ruined it, but I couldn't see using it the way it was before. I was also concerned that over time, it'd stick so hard that I wouldn't be able to get it off. Already, whenever I'd take it off, I'd hear a "crack" as it unstuck from the back cover. I'm actually still using it after the sanding and it works just fine and doesn't stick anymore, but it is ugly.
My advice is to get a solid color version of this case if you get one, and still sand the inside of it so it doesn't stick. (Though make sure it's really opaque if you sand it; if it's clear at all, you'll see sanding marks.)
I really like kickstand cases but I'm thinking now of just getting something that gives me a little better grip on the phone (like a textured back cover) and then either not getting a case at all, or getting another one of these and hoping it doesn't stick to a more matte back cover.

No, I don't have one sorry.
I just spotted it on ebay last night and thought I would post it here as an alternative for people to consider when I saw the thread earlier
I do have it in my watchlist and may purchase later, but at the moment I'm using a FlyGrip and a plain matt tpu case
The kickstand looks a bit more flush on that one. Does not seem like there is much texture in the TPU for grip though. I will let someone else be the guinea pig, but I am curious to hear about it.

Me too, I'm very curious about this case...
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
They have that one in clear now too.
It looks frosted so it probably just has a matte texture that makes it easier to grip.
I found another clear TPU case similar to the first kickstand one but minus the stand and with all 5-star reviews on Amazon... found the same case on Ebay for cheaper (under 5 bucks) so I'm trying that next. If that one still creates unsightly stickiness, I'll just go for a clear hard plastic case. I've used one of those on my iPod for literally 5 years and they are surprisingly effective and look perfect.
LOL. I ordered the clear one to try out. I am so weak and have no will power.

the "wanted" case project

Ok so i dont think many of us are impressed with the current available cases for out n7's
we seem to have to pick between protection-price-visual appeal.
we dont seem to have a case with all 3 .
so im implying my project idea,
im goin to check in at my old high school. where i remember in "Design&tech" we used "vacuum forming" machines to heat hard plastic sheets and re-mould them into covers and shapes over a pre-made wooden mould.
im goin to put forth an idea to create a case from shock-absorbent hard plastic front and back that either clip or screw closed. the next part of the project would be to imply some kind of clear glass screen area. one that conducts touch-responsiveness, good for display, and scratch/shatter resistance,.
im thinking after a few attempts we may be able to pre-cut the required "pattern" to perfectly fit to each edge while heat-moulding if so would could then attempt cutting the button/rocker area's then re-attaching them with a stretchy silicone between the actual button cover to make a professional finish to the buttons
so we would end up with a Hard shock resistant Full back/corner surface cover with clear scratch resistant full screen glass face and silicone set button rockers and attached plugs to insert into usb/headphone ports to keep out dust.
this is a 1 hour idea so far do you guys think its worth pursuing?
im think the school maybe interested as if this project works and can be made at a cheap price they could look into marketing it.
i would make sure xda'ers get a discount thou lol :good:
i too hate all the cases. ended up settling for a fitfolio which provides the protection i want without covering the edges of the screen.
however, the ideal case i think would be one that provide protection for corners, silver bezel (just the silver bezel, not wider), and raised edge for front protection. an added bonus would be a sturdy kickstand like the ones on the trident kraken case.
does it have to be hard plastic?
i think TPU material would be better for shock absorption.
TPU

If you want to design one yourself go for it and let us see the results but don't try to get consensus on what is ideal because you will be waiting forever, you can't make a case that's all things to everybody.

Im just wondering if i mount magnets in the inside of the back cover on the left hand side, will it affect any of the electronics (they will be mounted near the corners so it doesn't trigger the magnet switch. Then i can get my mom to sew me a flap with magnets, and have a legit apple style "smart cover"

I don't think it is much different than the gs2 model, as it's just a simple 2-piece frame. Somebody - who ridiculously tries to assemble it with one hand, while shooting the video with the other - posted a Youtube video. I cannot paste the link as I'm a new member.

doesnt really look like a good design.
the holes around the headphone jack and the microusb port seem to be smaller than the holes in my ebay bumper case. given that my ebay bumper case stops me from using a lot of headphone cables and microUSB cables, i would assume this case would be downright silly for the price.
I don't like it....
.I bought this case for s II and note...but design for note 2 is failed
Metal bumpers for Note 2 are terrible designed because Note 2 is too curvy compare to other phones and the bumpers usually does not fill in the gaps of the curve back, and usually at the same level without raised edges to protect the back from scratching too.
A no no for me since I tried with a cheap bumper case from eBay

Sorry guys, maybe I don't get this, but wouldn't any metal bumper case be only for looks and not protection? Edges of the phone, when dropped, are the most vulnerable points, and slapping on it a tight fitting metal will just transfer the shock instead of absorbing it to protect the phone. Am I missing something? These bumpers don't look like hollow metal tube with a "crumble zone" and inner soft lining. It looks awesome as hell, original for sure!!! But with additional weight to our phablet and what seems to be like a slick grip-less sides - wouldn't you worry that phone will be even more vulnerable to drop out of your hand/pocket with a higher chance of damage? Of course, I'm looking more from a practical point of view, while missing the whole pimping aspect of it lol!!!

Since the aluminium bumper is mainly one solid piece with a smaller one on top it acts like a strong exoskeleton taking all the force. For me the importamt thing is to have big enough cushion inside in order to avoid getting the phone in direct contact with the metal and also big enough lips to protect the front amd back.

LG made my favorite case for the N5 and it looks like they've made something similar for the 5x as well.
+The official LG Snap On case is hard, thin plastic with no lip and no button coverings. With my N5, it was nearly impossible to tell there was even a case on: it's just that thin.
-The only downside was due to not having a lip, the phone can shift around a tiny bit inside the case as the lip tends to hold the phone in place. It's also a bit expensive ($20-25).
I'll post some links I've found to buy the product here but most of mine are from sites that sell to Canada. Feel free to share any links you've found to buy the case in the US or other countries as well.

Thanks to @Infekxion for bringing this case to my attention.
For a super-thin case I picked up this one (I'd had one of these imak cases for a Razr Maxx a long time ago as well): http://www.ebay.com/itm/11181578731...49&var=410801075038&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
It does have a small front lip, but is also ultra thin, fits tight as a drum, and at $7 delivered is dirt cheap. Nice texture for better grip as well.

Nice find. Looks like one of the "quick sand" type cases. Those are great too (I had one for my N5) though the official LG case was noticeably thinner and with no lip felt like there wasn't even a case on the device.
On the up side the quicksand cases have unparalleled grip, though some people might be thrown off by the rough texture.

Interesting looking case, I think this'll be #3 or 4 i've bought, I tend to accumulate cases until I find one I like. It's certainly cheap enough to be disposable if I don't like it.
Sweet. I remember this case well (in N5 forums) but never got one they were a pita to find for me So I got the ringke slim for the N5 still have it and phone. I've gone caseless on the 5X so far I really like it but my OCD makes me buy cases....
Does it scratch the phone in any way?
I used similar case for my n5 and I remember it scratches corners when I try to put it on/off

I actually never took that case off my N5 since it was easy to forget it had one on lol. I suspect the same will be true for this version. However I could imagine scratches being a possibility since thin hard cases tend to be quite tight and and difficult to remove.
There is a techniques I've seen used to help remove those types of cases safely using a taped credit card.
Any idea where can I get this in the UK? I got the official one from google but it's just too bulky for my liking...
EDIT: Just found it on amazon UK. Here's the link for anyone interested (white version also available!):

Is this case as slippery as the phone? I normally have my phones naked but for the 5x it is slipping out of my fingers when trying to pick it up on the sides specifically and it has slid out of my pocket a few times.

Ive yet to receive mine but if it's the same as with the N5 case, the matte plastic will be almost identical to the 5x plastic.
For something with more grip check out that quicksand case linked earlier in this thread. Or if you don't mind a bulkier case I quite like the Diztonic matte texture I've been using for the last couple weeks. It's your standard case size but very easy to pick up and put down, has a better texture for gripping, and no doubt will protect well in a fall.
This thin hardshell is more just to protect from scratches and minor bumps while not noticeably enlarging the size of the device.
I got my case yesterday and finally have a chance to upload some pics. It's a little bit thicker than the original but I enjoy it just as much. The caliper I used may need slight adjustments and the bottom edges gave me the best reading but you get the idea. I really like how there's no lip on this one either.

Thank you. LG Logo looks removable. Is it?
Yes it is, doesn't look like it'll come out accidentally. It's a nice little accent that goes well with the imprint ring.

It's enough to be removable. I'll consider to buy this one. Maybe the ice one. I don't know.
Has anyone found this in white for sale in the US?

Is the official one scratching phone in anyway when you remove the case?

No scratches yet. I have a way of removing the case, same way with the old N5, hold phone with top end pressing into my waist and pry the bottom edges with my thumbnails. Slides off pretty easy. I recommend sitting down while doing it.

is imak thinner than spigen one?
i have spigen case installed. but the spigen's lower left corner has space with phone... too bad....
btw imak is really cheap... only $3 in china, so i am afraid of the protection when phone fall from hands....

None of the thin cases are really designed to protect in a drop. More just for scratches and minor bumps.
They might help a bit but even a thick case is no guarantee to protect the device in a drop.
I've personally tried the Diztronic case which is less than $10. It's made from thicker TPU material with a lip that would offer more drop protection than these thin cases.
"My hand is pretty small - but the phone is very comfortable to hold. :3 ( with and without the fusion case. )
The case made the phone less slippery though. ( which is a good thing - as it is less likely to slip out of my hand, lol. )"
