Microphone issue - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi xda,
I wanted to see if anyone else was having trouble with their microphone. On most of my calls I get told its like I'm talking with either my mouth covering the microphone (which I'm not) or that I'm talking quieter than a mouse.
When I use the loudspeaker, they can hear me fine.
I have tried taking the case off, but that makes no difference.
I am getting my replacement from 3 on Monday (they actually have the worst customer service known to mankind) so will let you all know how it goes.
I hope this is a 1 off, but thought I would see if anyone else has had this issue

are you using any thick cases?

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I tried it with the case off...and had the same problem. I think its intermittent as it happens on about 80% of calls.
I think the Mic might be down the bottom right had corner as there is a tiny hole there...and on the case its got a large gap to keep it uncovered

i have the same problem did you fing out where the problem is?

are both of you running custom roms? if so that might be the problem. i came from the s2 and when we got the ics leak it came with a horrible echo, underwater sound, and muffled sound. same problem with jb leak until source code was released. hope this info helps:good:

Hi,
no I wasn't using a custom Rom, it was stock.
I didn't get to the bottom of it, and I had to really fight to get a replacement, but now that I have, the sound issue is fine.
My new one does have that very slight lip at the bottom near the charging port, but I'd rather have that than a non working Mic.
sorry I couldn't be of more help but if I were you I would either call your network for a replacement or HTC to fix or exchange if you bought SIM free

My wife and I have both had Droid 4s since release day and aren't experiencing the issue.
I have had my droid 4 since the day it was released with no such problems. The only I can think that would cause speaker problems is if:
a) dust and gunk are getting stuck in the speaker
b) the connector for the speakers is becoming loose... do you ever try and clean around the edges of the phone, like in between the bezel and the frame? If so, you might be damaging a connector when you do so...
Other than that, maybe its a factory issue, it is a very thin top piece that holds the speaker and the screen, etc.
Hope this helps...

I started having this problem about 3 weeks ago and I've had my D4 for about 2 months.
Guess I need to call in for a replacement...what a pain. I used my OG Droid for almost 2 years without the need for a replacement. Then I picked up the D3 and went through about 6 phones in 6 months with a move to the D4 hoping things would be better.
What's the suck trick? My wife's is one day old and ear speaker sounds blown

suck trick
The suck trick is, if u suck on the speaker with your mouth it will temporarily fix the speaker.
Same issueI
I bought a Droid 4 two months ago and about within a month it started up with the same thing you are speaking of, a tinny, blown speaker sound coming from the ear piece. I did the whole sucking speaker deal and it would fix it , only to sound like junk again later. I returned it to Verizon, where they said that they had not heard of anyone else having the same problem, so Motorola sent me a "like new" Droid 4. I have had this phone for a month and just this morning it began with the blown speaker garbage again.
I looked more into it and read that it could be the glue which is holding the speaker in heats up and fails, causing the speaker to release from where it is seated and with that rattles, or vibrates, giving the effect of a blown speaker
This would make sense why by sucking into the speaker it stops, because you are basically popping it back into place temporarilly
Either way, I am returning this phone later today and plan on telling Verizon, I want a new one, not some "like new" refurbished piece of junk. I paid for a NEW phone, not one with problems motorola "fixed"
I hope all works out next, cause I really love the keyboard and could've gotten a Rzr for a few bucks more.

I believe this app is meant for the speaker on the phone, not the earpiece that people have problems with.

I just got a "like new" replacement phone for having the same problem. I had my phone for about five months before noticing a problem with the speaker. I had the same problem on four different DroidX phones. Verizon acted like it was such a big deal, and they'd never had any problems with the Droid4. The woman at the Verizon store tried to convince me that my Otter Box case was causing the problem. Verizon's customer service department is such a joke sometimes. So far so good with my replacement though.

if you make a call and run it it runs in the earpiece.
to clean it right
1wipe it off
2 clean it with a airduster if you got one
3 with a q tip and a little bit of alcohol
4 dry it than call you house and pick up the phone
5 than run the app incall 3x times
it should be good than
also in /settings/sound/speaker settings set it to custom turn off surround sound and turn the eq to bass punch or lower.

[Q] Has anyone gotten complaints about call quality from the person on the other end?

I'm hoping this problem is just one bad handset and not epidemic, but I have been hearing VERY consistently from other people that they are having trouble understanding what I'm saying. It is not location specific, I generally have full or nearly full service, and I can hear them just perfectly. But I have been hearing from many people that I talk to about this problem.
I'm going to exchange the phone and get a replacement, assuming this is just my phone and not an HTC ONE problem. Has anybody else been hearing this? If so I may regretfully end up with an S4 =\
I have been having issues as well. Just tried to exchange for an S4 at sprint store and they wanted $35 dollar re-stocking fee. Going to deal with online/phone people now. My HTC One is dropping calls, calls are not clear, and lower data connection in the same environment than my old EVO Shift. Wanted the phone to work out, just didn't.

Mine is working beautifully call quality is awesome on both ends and data conection was faster here in boston when put up against my buddy's s4 (also sprint) there were some issues with speakers and radios on some of the HTC ones... mostly the first batch that went out to people who pre-ordered, myself included, but so far i'm issue free.
be warry of that s4 you picked up by the way many people have reported display issues... don't worry though I believe they are software side... people reported black bars appearing on the screen when scrolling I'm pretty sure it's a simple software bug.

Didn't have one for the first 5 days, had it the last 2.. same problems consistent throughout.
i'll confess I use a Bluetooth headset, but the very rare occasion I use the handset I've never had an issue
I was having the same problem, then I realized my pinky was always covering up the microphone. Went 2 days where people were like I can barley hear ya.

It wasn't the pinky for me. As I stated in another thread, I think it's something to do with over-aggressive or poorly handled background noise cutting, or a major problem with dynamic range control going from loud to soft etc.
started actually using the phone for phone calls this week..I'm hearing "its hard to hear you" and "you sound far away" more then I've ever heard before...
It's definitely not the point for me. It happens all the time, most of my calls are using a airave so I'm wondering if that had something to do with it.
Anyone know if this is a sprint related issue? Should I be exchanging my phone?

[Q] No sound through headphones from time to time

Hi all,
I have a problem with my HTC One. Sometimes the headphones are working, sometimes not. Sometimes it is enough to reboot the phone, sometimes it takes s several reboots. Speakers are working fine. Using a different pair of headphones does not solve the problem. Anyone with a similar problem or a solution?
My guess is that it is a software problem as rebooting helps but not playing around with the headphone jack in the headphone socket. I considered putting a different ROM on it but I am afraid to void warranty what would be bad if the headphone problem is a hardware problem.
Regards
Christian
I've been having the same problem. I rarely use headphones but lately the last few times I have. Its been a hit and miss with it working. Sometimes it'll come on then go back off. Its quite annoying. Turning the headphones or unplugging and plugging back in sometimes helps. I've encountered it on 3 different headsets, a speaker and an fm transmitter. Its actually happening now as I try the headphones that came with my phone and a comp speaker

When the sound through headphones is working, it is working. It is not disappearing. I am not using the bundled earphones but sennheiser earphones. I used the same headphones on my old galaxy nexus and use them also with my notebook. This is why I know they are working and the HTC One must be the problem. I am unsure if I should return the device and get a new one or just wait for the update with 4.2.2. Probably the problem will be fixed by a new firmware...
Yeah once they connect they usually stay connected. The going on and off only occures when the headphones are plugged in and don't come on to begin with and Im messing with it to get it to come on. Its definitely gotta be a problem within the htc one. Whether software or hardware, I don't know. I'm leaning toward software issue and am going to wait it out and see if 4.2.2 fixes it. I don't use it enough to swap out my nearly perfect htc one with a possible defected one

Seems we are the only two people having this problem
It appears that way, but theres probably others that don't use xda or just haven't come across this post yet. It is a fairly new post. Hopefully someone comes across it and has a better insight of the actual problem that causes it to happen and/or confirms 4.2.2 does in fact fix the issue

The Update didn't fix my problem. Yesterday the sound was gone again. I will return to the store today.

People can't hear from if I am using phone on my left ear...but OK on right ear !

I got the HTC One black for sprint a few months ago.
(I have had a slim case on it that barely covers the front face, mostly the back. It's a barely there case.)
problem I am having is that everytime I switch the phone to my left ear and hold it with my left hand, the other party says "i sound muffled" -
they cannot hear me.
Then, I immediately switch to my right ear, and they say "oh, now i can hear you fine.."
I have tried this with 3 different people and they all were able to predict exactly when I switched my phone from right to left and vice versa.
So, there seems to be a problem with my phone. anyone else having this issue? My friend has HTC One silver for t-mobile and he doesn't have this problem.
It's under warranty so I'm thinking of getting it replaced. Maybe go with the silver one?

make sure you are not covering up your noisecanaling mic (the hole next tot the camera) if it is being covered it will not work correctly. no need to send in your phone when it is not an issue with the phone.
Happens to me all the time too.
The main microphone at the bottom is on the left side, and when holding it with my left hand my little finger instinctively hold it from below, covering the mic.
Only with my left hand.

I am holding the phone only from the sides when this problem happens.
I am not covering up any part of the mic on top or bottom.
During my tests, I was careful to make the calls while holding the phone with just
3 fingers, making sure I'm only holding phone from the sides.
So, we can definitely rule out me accidentally covering up the mic.
The problem is consistent and happens everyday
Maybe your phone doesn't like left-handed people... Maybe it's got something against the creative gene... Seriously though, I have people tell me I sound muffled occasionally - maybe every tenth phone call. I don't see any consistency though so I can't wait to hear what you find. And I think I always use my right hand because I hear better in my right ear.

It's something to do with the gyro. Someone made a mod to deactivate it during calls to solve this problem. Keep searching. I'll post back if I find it.

I immediately thought of this as the cause of the problem - the gyro.
The phone is being naturally slightly tilted in " / " direction ( as opposed to " \ " right handed)
I went to the local sprint store. The tech there was puzzled when I explained to him what was happening.
Then, I stepped outside of the store and called him on his landline. 60 seconds into the call, he was not able to hear me when I was
holding phone to my left ear - when I switched to the right ear, he heard me just fine. He was amazed , as he'd never seen anything like this.
I paid the $50 and he ordered me a replacement - which will arrive tomorrow.
Hopefully, I do not have this problem on the new device.
Will update in a few days after testing new phone.
frustrated...
went to the sprint store when they called me, saying my replacement phone was in.
i went there and was totally disappointed. they tried to give me a phone with scratches on the front / back.
I was not having it. I told them no way, i paid for a new phone 2 months ago, and i will not take some scratched up phone as replacement.
they said fine, they will order another one and ship to my house. it will take 5-7 days.
next day, i get an email saying that the htc one is on back order and there is not ETA date. So, im basically stuck with my phone until god knows when...
i called the store back to complain, spoke to manager, and he said there are no other options, i have to wait.
So, im going to try to call another local sprint corporate store to see if they can help, but at this point, pretty pissed off with sprint.
I would get rid of sprint I think that's your problem, not the phone

[Q] Using the secondary mic for phone calls

Hello Folks,
I have an HTC One with a faulty primary mic, I have concluded it to be a hardware problem because its condition is the same after installing various different custom ROMs (the mic became faulty while on the stock ROM). I am using Viper ROM at the moment.
Now, with this problem, I have to use the mic from my earphones everytime I make a call. I am mostly OK with that, but I am trying to find ways where I should be able to use it without external mic in case I forget to carry my earphones/mic with me.
I was running the HTC Function Test the other day and discovered that my device comes with a secondary mic at the back of the phone, which works absolutely fine when I tested it. The recording (while holding as if I was talking on the phone) and playback from that mic was perfect. It would be really useful if I could either make it my primary microphone (calls, recordings, etc.) or atleast use it for phone calls. I don't know if there is a way from the hardware perspective, but I am quite sure we could do it by changing properties from within the build.
This is my first ever question, and I am counting on this community for the solution.
Cheers!

Thanks nateboi81, but it's not in warranty anymore... I'd actually be interested to find it's spare part which has the mic to replace it myself.
The primary mic seems to get clogged very easily with dust. I've read a few threads in the past where people thought their mic's were defective but after cleaning out the hole, the mic was working fine again.

That's exactly what I had thought as well, so instead of poking toothpicks into the mic hole, I disassembled my phone, took the mic out, looked at it, cleaned it carefully, assembled my phone back, started it all up... and it just didn't make any difference at all.
I got chocolate clogged in mine after Easter
