GS4 Google Edition - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

I doubt this is true, but if it is man I can't wait to get our hands on the firmware.
Samsung GS4 Google Edition (I/O Rumor)

Google Streaming Music Service

Yea, that would be pretty sweet. Looking very forward to the exciting news that'll surely come out.

The guy that leaked this is pretty legit. The only thing is, is that Sprint would probably never see this phone. I'm guessing T-Mobile and maybe at&t.

That would be amazing. If it has the same hardware and aosp, would you be able to somehow get the 6 gigabytes that samsung software uses up? I would donate for that.

no that would require a repartitioning. you have the 16 gigs of the chip, formatted prolly comes to 13Gigs, then however much storage system and all the other partitions take up will still bring you down a bit.

It is true,

Just confirmed at Google I/O to sell starting on June 26th in the US for $649.99. All the same specs including 16GB of on board storage. Also throwing in an unlocked bootloader.

Power to those who want it, but if I wanted pure Google, I'd just get the Nexus 4 or wait for the Nexus 5 to come out around Xmas. The one reason why I love this S4 is for the option of running TW or AOSP. Add a most likely MIUI option down the road and I'm set.
That's actually my only complaint with the Nexus 7. There are like 30 ROM's and the differences are so subtle that I just ended up running Official AOKP and I just ignore the rest.

Well, my Nexus 7 has also violated my human rights a couple of times (specifically waterboarding), but I didn't think it was worth mentioning in this thread.

Can't wait till this gets ported to other GS4s on different carriers...

Cnet and SlashGear, among others, are saying this is the same version currently out for Tmobile. That's excellent news as the i9505, all its variants - and quite possibly the d2 (i9305) series - are going to get some serious love from Google as a result.
We already have CM radio working for us. The rest should be fairly common between us and Tmobile, meaning that we should see this over on our side in short order.
Guess I have a new project after all....

right, teh pit is what tells teh device what partition goes where. you need to have a "custom" one. which on teh OG epic required a lot of testing and thus teh need for teh uart/jtag that team epiccm had setup. at best you end up risking all that to gain 1-2 gigs...

Firstly, "HI!".
These Gingerbread ROMs aren't all SDK. Some of them are AOSP which means the source code for Gingerbread that is available. This isn't however a Nexus One flavour of the code which is what most people are waiting for (me included). Soime of the AOSP stuff doesn't fully work due to lack of drivers etc...
Still good for some people though.
No, we don't have enough whining threads. Let's make some more.

Well, if you want the official gingerbread, buy a Nexus S. Barring that, sit back and wait until it gets released for the N1. Pissing and moaning about it here will get you nothing. And wow...*****ing about a ROM that isn't fully optimized enough for you. Entitled much? I guess I must have missed the gingerbread ROM that YOU put out that was 100% optimized and running top speed. Those devs that have already put out ROMs deserve a freaking beer, not a whine-fest from you.

Google doesn't owe you any updates. You bought a working phone. Just because they do offer updates doesn't mean you are entitled to anything. If they never put out a gingerbread rom to the nexus one that's their right. They owe you nothing.

Yes, that is a bit disingenuous to say that, considering one of the major selling points of the Nexus One was that it was the flagship phone, and should expect to the first dibs on updates.
I have no resentment of the nexus S getting GB first, but seriously, they are dragging it on.

Most of us are rooted and running CyanogenMod7, and from the problems I read about from the people on unrooted phones, I wouldn't care if Google ever release a OTA, I'm happy with Cyanogen's builds, and I've never had issues with speed, except when I was on stock which was about three hours.

They owe "us" nothing. We bought a phone that was working, had an OS, and the only selling point of it was - it's a developer phone, easily rootable and customizable. Nobody ever said anything about updates, you didn't pay for them, and if you think you did - think again until you understand it completely. They happen? Thanks a lot. They don't? Oh well, such is life. They're delayed? Sit tight and wait.

It's true that they don't owe us anything, and it's their right if they decided that they are not going to update the nexus one. What I think people are complaining about is Google said about a month and a half ago that the OTA will be happening in the coming weeks. If they are going to take 2-3 months to push out the update then maybe 'coming weeks' probably wasn't the right choice of words, coming months is more appropriate.
I really don't like how Google handles all these updates, specifically how they chose to stay quiet about this issue. They said it'd be out in a few weeks, if it doesn't, why don't they give us some insight on what went wrong. A simple 'We found some bugs that would take a while to fix' and I'd be completely satisfied.

Wait no, Google has never been too on target with their release dates.
There are still two major bugs that have to be fixed to my knowledge. The random reboot bug and the SD card vulnerability bug. Until these two bugs are fixed, 2.3 will not arrive on the N1.

Opinion?

I assume everyone in this forum is a nexus one owner, if u were going 2 upgrade 2 one phone wat phone would that b and why?

Personally, I would not upgrade to anything that has yet been announced as the dual core phones already hitting the market are soon to be leapfrogged by the quad-core Tegra & Qualcomm chips late this year / early next year.
The N1 is still an awesome device and still gets plenty of Google love as evident by the OTA to Gingerbread (though many were claiming abandonment due to the delay).

The next Nexus Phone, so probably when Android Ice Cream Sandwich comes out. It should be a better improvement from the N1 to the next Nexus than it was going to the Nexus S.
Keep the N1 for now until a much better device arrives especially if your T-Mobile usa. Consider the Atrix if on At&t...

Its not a hacked Maps apk, but some changes to your system files that trick the system into thinking the N1 is a true multitouch device. You can either replace the files found in thread below or flash the zip in recovery depending on your comfort level.

The N1 has multitouch but doesn't do it well due to the crappy clearpad 2000 touch sensor used by HTC. The touch points will cross axis'. You will turn the map to the left and then it may turn right all of a sudden. Instead of enabling a half-assed map rotation, google disabled this feature on the N1. Personally, I have used this "hack" and had decent success YMMV.
If you do install this, remember to do it again after flashing different ROMS/Nightlies etc....

Nexus vs Google Edition Phones

Hello
As you know the release of Samsung Galaxy S4 GE and HTC One GE offering the same flavour as Nexus users already have a taste for.
Do you think inclusion of the new type of camera app and various other features in these junks defeats the purpose of owning a Nexus? It is we who should get the update of even a minute bug squash or changes to any core app.
What would be the update cycle of these junk phones? Will the Android updates be prioritised for the Nexus or will it released for the junks together?
Sorry for being rude, as a loyal Nexus fan, I seriously hate these so called idiotic Google Edition.

I sound like a broken record saying this since day 1. The OEMs have to put their proprietary drivers and kernels (firmware) into the image or the software wont' know how to communicate with the hardware. I guess if the OEMs were willing to release them to Google then I guess Google could handle the updates. Then you have to ask: why would Google take on that responsibility? Would the OEMs openly give Google those drivers in a day and age where anyone can sue anyone over anything because something looks similar to something else? None of that makes sense.
Yeah I'm kinda dissapointed... I want the latest and greatest on my N4 but still don't have it... Hopefully it's just a matter of days... Hopefully hours....

I don't understand what you are saying. What other "features" are you talking about? A red phase beam wallpaper? These phones haven't been released yet. My guess is the N4 will get those changes when 4.3 is released which may come before the GE phones are even released. Most likely lots of backend changes to the camera were needed to get it to work with the new driver hardware in the GE phones.
Once they launch will be the last time they have something the Nexus doesn't. The moment Google said that HTC/Samsung were responsible for updates and they weren't hosting/posting source means those phones will almost certainly be behind the Nexus.

That's the point, why are GEs getting the new camera app with new arc like settings and Nexus are left behind. Why is that "we" should wait for 4.3 and expect that the new camera would be included in that. And talking about other features, I'm sure there would be some still hidden not available to the Nexus owners.

look a little out of the box, these Google Edition phones are promoting stock android, whether they'll get updates parallel with the nexus or will join after a few days/weeks delay it doesn't matter. How do you know the GE phones will get those features first? They haven't even been released yet? And they won't be in users hands until after July 9th.

The Galaxy S5 Touchwiz is so bloated that you will need to custom ROM it.

http://m.androidcentral.com/galaxy-s5-rom-bit-monster-taking-nearly-8gb-storage
This is proof that you will need to custom ROM this phone if you want to regain all that internal space that was lost.
I think that Samsung software engineers need to slim things up on their Touchwiz.
Makes me wonder how large the Note 4 software is going to be.

Root it - install Titanium and remove all the bloatware. I'm having a hard time understand why they aren't going stock Android ? It's by far the best and least bloated android experience and it just......works.........!

Couldn't care less about bloat if the batterylife is good. Already suffered badly with Nexus. Pathetic batterylife (putting it mildy). What's the use of less-bloat if the batterylife is so bad?
BTW, I consider G+ integration as the biggest bloat in Android.
This is no different from what's been done before by Samsung and other companies with their devices. Samsung at least gives external storage options still.
System uses 5.28GB.
So you'll have 10+ for the user.
As you can see from the screenshot it is loaded with trailers and demos.

Im with you. I love my nexus 5 to death, it's so fast and fluid. I even put purity and franco for the best battery/performance you can get from it. But still, battery life is not that good. I can get max 5 sot without playing games. And thats not enough. I cant have a peace of mind using a device that doesnt have a removable battery. But with my s4 and its battery kit, it's a pleasure to use. I can have 50% of juice left and have the battery kit 100% stand by waiting to be put. With this infinity battery life, i can have a peace of mind using my phone, even for playing emulators.

im just wondering if Samsung is going to release a 32Gb model right away or will we have to wait for one like people had to for the s4

If you are on Verizon or AT&T you can't do squat with it. Perhaps the GS4 is the way to go or something else. I guess March 25th is worth waiting for.

Out of curiosity (since I'm new to the droid world) -- Why can't you do anything with the Verizon or ATT model?

Yeah until the carriers (well the ones here in the US at least) get their hands on it & add their useless bloatware on top of Touchwiz, which brings me to my 2nd rant - Samsung or any other OEM has no business even offering up 16gb models these days. The standard should be 32gb at least & especially since Google wants to kill SD card access.
One to the Max

I agree about the 16gb part, but at most carrier bloatware will add maybe 512mb-2014mb. Which the major carriers let you delete some of the crap you don't want no problem.

Safestrap! Could we keep it alive?

Hello everyone,
As you all know, Hashcode has stopped supporting safestrap (as he mentioned in his last post in the safestrap thread. Good luck to him on his new career and many many thanks for the amazing safestrap). Now it's time for our existing developers to chime in and get the lead and keep the project running for us (at least the AT&T note 3 community. If they can go further, that's even better). I'm asking all of my friends/brothers here on the note 3 community that have the skills for it to jump in and mess with safestrap and see what they can do. I know for sure that we have a very good number of very smart devs here who can definitely make something happen.
Thank you in advance!

Questions! Could we keep them in the correct forum?
Lol. Note 4 is coming out. Safestrap would be wanted more over there as it will arrive completely stock and locked down. SS for Note 3 seems to be working perfectly fine the way it is. However, I don't use it much anymore.

Well, that's true, but we are also gonna be getting more updates. We are not going to just stay on 4.4.2 forever, right? Lol
Both of you have great point but it's not who needs it more. We all need it for our devices. I hope we can find someone to pick up the torch.

The only reason we would need an update is if we were to get Android L, but I'm not holding my breath for that one, specially since the note 4 is supposed to be released with kit kat, and then it will probably update to L. It would be awesome if we would get the android update!

I don't understand how come people don't expect high spec flagship devices to get updates.... We will have it.

I always wonder the same. Once a new phone comes out, people think their current phone is garbage. Note 3 will still be a flagship kickass phone for at least 4 years from now IMO. Very high specs that can keep up with so many updated to come.
Every phone I've ever had I had the latest os long before it was officially released. I'm not waiting on att for it.

None that will be affective enough. Who knows, especially with what I've seen in the past, we could very well stay on 4.4.2 forever.

Nobody really needs it. It's a desire, correct? Regardless, I'm fairly certain that people will be grabbing the Note 4 and checking for any immediate possibilities. Time will tell.

I highly doubt that there will be root for the note 4 right away. It will definitely take a very long time if not never.

I can guarantee there won't be root for quite some time. That's why I stated that people will want Safestrap on Note 4, not the Note 3 that already has a fairly stable version. Stable enough, that is. Time will tell.
Why do we guarantee no root. You people make statements without merit

Gezzz lots of older phones still get updates. I'm still thinking at some point we will see a bootloader hack
No worries. The Alliance Team is gonna try to pick up SS for everyone.
