[Q] No recovery mode after failed OTA - Note N7000 - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys - I have had a mini disaster with my Note and desperate for some expert advice.
Basically last night I ran the official ICS OTA it downloaded great, I left it plugged into the power and ran the update as I slept. I woke up this morning to find the battery flat, guessing a charging issue I used my external charger to charge the battery. Now, the phone is stuck in some kind of boot loop - It passes the Samsung splash screen to a black screen with the Android Robot with it's belly full of spiraling triangles. That hangs for 30 seconds then it restarts and does the same thing over and over again.
I can not enter recovery mode - vol up + home + power doesn't work but I can enter the download ODIN screen.
Any ideas what I can do?

That's awesome - just one final question: you say I need kies, what part does that play? For the life of me I have never got it talking with my Note.

without kies..odin won't recognize the device.. kies is the driver for the device

you can also use Samsung USB drivers

[Q] Boot loop, can't enter recovery mode.

So this morning I was using my phone as normal when it froze. Then I rebooted and it just stays bootlooping. I'm using a recent nightly of CM9 and I can't enter recovery mode to reflash the phone. How do I install CM9 using Odin? Is there any other software for that? I can enter download mode just fine.
gcuchiha said:
Maybe its a boot loop. Switch off your phone and check if download and recovery mode is available(see next paragraph).
If so follow the steps mentioned.
First of all download xxjw4 firmware for galaxy gt-I9000 from
http://www.hotfile.com/dl/150483619/708026d/I9000XXJW4_I9000OXAJW4_XEU.zip.html
1) Put your phone into Recovery mode (Vol up + Home + Power button) and perform a Wipe data/Factory reset, then a Wipe cache. When done pull the battery out for around ten seconds then re-insert.
(If recovery isn't working ignore this step)
2) Put the phone into Download mode (Vol down + Home + Power button)
3) Unzip the JW4 firmware folder you've downloaded to your Desktop.
4) Launch Odin and click on the button that says PDA and navigate to the PDA file you've just unzipped to your desktop and select it.
5) Connect your phone to your PC via USB. Odin will say Added and a box will turn yellow to indicate it has recognised your phone.
6) Click the start button in Odin and sit back and wait for Odin to flash your phone. When it's finished it will take a few minutes longer for the phone to reboot than is usual so please don't panic. The phone will reboot.
7) When the phone has rebooted, remove the USB cable and you now have the latest 2.3.6. It might be a good idea to repeat step 1 to make sure nothing of the old firmware is left behind.
And that's it, seven steps to 2.3.6 JW4 Value Pack and TouchWiz 4.
In case you want more info about flashing go to this site

[Q] Galaxy Ace S5830C - cant acess download mode

I read some tutorials here in the forum on how to root your phone! I was able to successfully perform. Until that point, my phone was still booting android 2.3.3 (ginger) that came from the factory.
Then I went into recovery mode and installed 5.0.2.6 ClockworkMod! Installed successfully too! Then I tried to install some roms modified for the S5830I, as read on the internet that the roms of them are compatible with the S5830C.
I tried the first version of the ICS lite and basic, the two images, when installed by clockwork gave no error messages in the terminal, but when you restart the machine could not boot the system.
I installed and booted each version of the ICS modificias separately. I tried other roms. gave some errors "gep.prop" because of non-compatibility with my model. In the end, tried to use the method with ODIN, but my phone can not boot the mod download! Yes, I tried all the tutorials!
I know I need to press the home button, power, volume down (...) I tried to use the ADB "adb reboot download", and also got no answer!! So ODIN does not detect my phone! Percebir also that the recovery mode always resets to a version e3 (I think it is the factory default recory) with this recovery can not seem to wipe the cache or data.
Really broke my phone? Why the hell i can get a good status of installation with the roms but can not boot them?
It's a classic
Yes you did break your phone, unless you try this last trick:
take out your battery
wait until your phone is completly uncharged internally (an hour or so)
go to a hot place like a radiator or somthing like that
do the "download mode trick" with the battery still out
put the battery in while still holding the buttons
repeate if it doesnt work
when you get the downloadmode, you are a lucky person. the rest you seem to know how it works... simply flash a new rom
I hope it works!

Hello abdurm, could you tell us your current firmware? You would require to give us details from Settings > About phone.
Also, did you try flashing anything? If so, what was it?
By pressing the Volume Down button + Home button + Power button simultaneously, does your device enter Download mode?

It dosen give me enough time to check firmware version, it reboots. It is on ICS. It is stock and I have not tried fashing or anything.
Yes it goes in download mode by pressing Volume Down button + Home button + Power button simultaneously.
Flash gingerbread rom in PC ODIN only and it will automatically reboot by itself but if still stuck in samsung logo go to recovery mode and wipe data and cache.

Thank you very much. Just one last thing I dont have to be rooted to instal this ROM and it is ok to flash directly from ICS . Just downloadFilename: SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS.zip and flash it. And it will leave me with GB?

1] Download the pre-rooted stock Gingerbread firmware, SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS.zip and extract it to get the SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS.tar file.
2] After doing so, run PC ODIN, select the PDA tab in it and point to the extracted file (SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS.tar). Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time will be selected by default. Do not select anything else.
3] Put your device in Download Mode and then connect it to your PC via the USB cable. The ID:COM label in PC ODIN will turn yellow indicating your device is connected and recognised.
4] Click on the Start button in PC ODIN and wait for the label above ID:COM to say Pass. After it does so, disconnect your device from your PC.
Your device will reboot and you will be on a stock Gingerbread firmware with root privilege.

Hello again abdurm, I am glad to learn your device is up and running again. :highfive:
Now that you are on a rooted firmware, I would advice you not to avail an OTA update as there is a very high likelihood of it breaking/undoing the root privilege.
Personally, I have not ventured into Ice Cream Sandwich yet and thus I have no right to guide you with the process of acquiring it. But, based on your quoted post may I ask you if you desire to have stock Ice Cream Sandwich with or without root privilege?
I recommend you thoroughly read dr.ketan's threads which explain the subject at hand.

[Q] Soft Brick issue

Hi,
First time working with a samsung phone, so im not very used to some samsung realted soft.
I'm doing a favor to a friend, he came to this problem where his phone woudnt boot up, He says one day he run out of battery and coudl never turn it on again.
when i turn it on, it gets stucked at boot image (first attached image), if i try to charge the battery image appears but with the loading logo (the loading logo is not moving), he told me that he also tried with another battery and the same appeared.
For what i've read there is a download mode besides recovery mode. I think i have no problem entering download mode (3rd pic), even though i don't know how to use it, pressing a button does nothing, and pluggin it to a pc (drivers installed it) seems the same.
So i wanted to enter recovery mode, and trying o factory reset it, but when i try to enter most of times nothing happens, the others i get weird screen like the one i attached.
I'm not pretty sure how to preceed now. The only thing that appears to be working is the download mode. If that's the case, how can i flahs the stock firmware on it?
Thanks for reading!

You would do the same thing as if it were custom firmware, goto http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/, and download the stock firmware compatible with the device
Enter the device in download mode and flash the stock firmware with Odin
Instructions by SamMobile self:
Extract (unzip) the firmware file
Download Odin v3.09
Extract Odin zip-file
Open Odin v3.09
Reboot phone in Download Mode (press and hold Home + Power + Volume Down buttons)
Connect phone and wait until you get a blue sign in Odin
Add the firmware file to AP / PDA
Make sure re-partition is NOT ticked
Click the start button, sit back and wait a few minute

Same error as before
im downloading some other firmwares to try, but i dont think there is the problem :s
I've been having this issue for months now. It does that exact thing. Try removing the SIM card and starting the phone as normal and see what happens. If it starts then, we have the exact problem. Mine works perfectly WITHOUT the SIM card but....what's a phone without a SIM card right? I've tried putting the Stock ROM on to no avail as well. I think my thread about this is still somewhere around but I doubt anyone managed to solve the problem either.
If you do work something out post it back. Sorry I couldn't be much help.

SM-T810 stuck in "D/L- do not turn off target." Flash stock rom to fix?

On my rooted T810 I mistakenly hit restart through Knox and ended up in Odin mode. If I do Power + Volume Down it'll show the Samsung logo for a second, then immediately go to "Downloading...do not turn off target." Other key combos like recovery mode don't seem to work for me (unless I'm doing them wrong). What should be my plan from here? I'd like to unroot at this point, so try to flash a stock rom through Odin?
Thanks for the help.
What do you mean restart through knox?
POWER + VOL DOWN should simply restart the device unless you are holding home as well.

I hit restart from within system security. I think that's what started the problem.
Power + Vol Down would start to restart it, but as soon as the Samsung logo came up it would switch to the "Downloading...do not touch target" screen.
I kept it plugged in overnight, but I don't think it charged due to the state it was in because now it won't turn on at all. Wondering if I truly bricked it now.
Just hold POWER + VOL DOWN again. It should reboot.
If it reboots to download mode again you're gonna have to flash something to reset it.
You could just flash twrp or the stock firmware.

Just tried. Nothing. Tried it with both the charger disconnected and with it plugged into the USB on my PC. I left it connected to the wall charger all night, but it doesn't look it got any charge.
Thoughts? Take off the back and try disconnecting the battery?

Get the latest firmware for the T810 from sammobIle and get Odin from here https://www.dropbox.com/s/1mujevgk0brle3f/Odin-v3-09.zip
Only get Odin from there as there are a LOT of fake Odin downloads on the web.
Thanks Lightn1ng and ashyx. Just waiting on the firmware to finish downloading.
FYI- When I got home I plugged the tablet into my PC USB and it flashed the logo screen for a second, then flashed the "D/L, do not...." message for a split second, then the screen went black again and I haven't been able to get it into the download mode or restart or anything.
Oh, and when I plugged it in I didn't get a beep or a pop-up in the notification bar that the tablet had connected with the PC.
Ok, guys, I have Odin and the firmware now.
I fiddled with the tablet a little more and now I'm starting to think I have a bad charger connector. I plugged it in and the screen turned on to the D/L, do not.... screen and then turned off, but if I wiggled the cord a little bit I could get it to come back on or come back on with some flickering of the screen. Still doesn't fix my "downloading, do not turn off target...." issue though. Should I go get a new usb charger cord and see if that changes anything? If that's an issue then maybe I could get back to the point where I could flash the software to it. I dunno.

The issue is you have no charge in the tablet.
That's why it's only displaying momentarily.
Get some charge into it with a different charger and cable.
Once you've done that just flash the stock firmware and all will be good.

Ok, I'll give that a try.
To flash in Odin:
1) Get Samsung USB drivers from http://developer.samsung.com/technical-doc/view.do?v=T000000117 (download the zip file)
2) Install the Samsung USB drivers
3) Open Odin
4) Plug device, in D/L mode, into PC using USB cable
5) In "AP" slot, select the .tar.md5 file you downloaded for the firmware (you might have to extract the firmware zip to find this file)
6) Make nachos
7) LEAVE EVERYTHING ELSE IN ODIN ALONE!
8) Click "Start"
9) LEAVE USB CABLE PLUGGED UNTIL DEVICE AUTOMATICALLY RESTARTS
10) Eat those nachos you made earlier
Hey guys, just wanted to pop back on to let you know I successfully flashed my tablet back to stock, so I'm back up and running. I really appreciate the help!

The solution is posted. My specific problem in the end was that my charger/USB cable was bad so my PC wasn't recognizing the tablet.
I followed Lightn1ing's directions (except for making nachos, haha), but here it is again:
To flash in Odin:
1) Get Samsung USB drivers from http://developer.samsung.com/technic...o?v=T000000117 (download the zip file)
2) Install the Samsung USB drivers
3) Open Odin
4) Plug device, in D/L mode, into PC using USB cable
5) In "AP" slot, select the .tar.md5 file you downloaded for the firmware (you might have to extract the firmware zip to find this file)
6) LEAVE EVERYTHING ELSE IN ODIN ALONE!
7) Click "Start"
8) LEAVE USB CABLE PLUGGED UNTIL DEVICE AUTOMATICALLY RESTARTS

I'm sure I mentioned this in post #11?
