[Q] Support for this phone...? - Galaxy S Advance I9070 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Stats wise this looks like a bang for the buck. I am considering buying this phone. I wanted to know whether the Chipset this phone has will continue to get support. Also wanted to know whether this phone can play Full HD videos. Other than that can this phone play HD Games? Is there any hope that this phone will get further version upgrades? Is it possible to install JellyBean oficially without having to root?
Thanks a lot!

There is a rumor that it will get 4.2, and stops there. We have official JB, no need to root. There is some lag on full HD, but do you need full HD on 4" screen really? I am not game player, about games you will need to wait for somebody else to answer you.

Thanks a lot! I really appriciate your help!

This phone is pretty good, but not good enough if compared with the more recent ones.. I mean if you want more Battery Life, Gaming Performance and more (future) Official updates or Dev support then you can opt for better, more popular Mid-Range phones (according to your budget)...
But still this phone is pretty good, better than Galaxy R and closely related to the all famous S2!
And yes two more things:
- I never tried playing 1080p videos, so I don't know whether it will work or not.. but I have a lot of 720p videos (and movies) - and they all have lag free playback on the stock video player... The only 720p video that lags for me is the default Samsung Sample Video :silly:
- You can play most of the games on this phones, but most high end games or too resource demanding 3D games won't play well on Highest settings...
I was an iPhone user before and this is my first Android phone.. but yeah this is still a pretty good phone, but there are better phones (maybe at same cost)..
Take a look at this thread too.. I gave my review on S3 Mini vs SGSA on that thread...

Some of those points are really foolish sorry...For example, the HSDPA speed is the same and it doesn't have HSPA+...our phone supports microSDHC too(someone tried microSDXC and it worked too...weird)...the original s3 mini hasn't NFC,there is a I8190N version with that.
Also,I don't think it will get Key Lime Pie if the Note,S2 and ours will not get it just because it is newer.Remember the S plus case(gigngerbread as the original S)
Not trying to flame, just correcting you.
In conclusion if solid multitasking isn't your thing,at my opinion S advance makes it because it has better front camera and an ambient light sensor. Also I like the design more...because it's smaller S3 mini doesn't look as good the S3.I saw them both.
You can't play 1080p videos with the stock video player. At heavy games the single core Mali says its word.
If you want a better phone just buy the S2.Better screen, ram and processor. Also the developement support is waay greater because of a biiiig user base.In my country, the difference is just like 25 euros.
I might switch to the S2 too...

Thanks a lot for your input guys! :good: I am considering some other phones like Galaxy Note N-7000 and Sony Xperia L.
The last thing I wanna know is whether the sound output is actually low as some reviewers are saying.
Thanks again!

We can't play 1080P Videos on this phone. When I use video players other than stock,it play only audio.

Will we ever get smooth graphics on X1?

Im talking about watching movies, playing games - i dont know what the reason its so slow but it is painfully slow. its bothering me a lot. it seems like older much cheaper phones can play video much better than our phones.
is it a hardware fault (no hope) or a software fault ?
its a software fault
if you update your phone to some custom roms the phone runs LOTS faster
anyways, my videos and some 3d games run pretty fast on my phone.
not java games cause those arent hardware supported
I have to say that I am pretty darn happy with video playback on this phone... its fast and doesnt lag... the sound is even in sync with the picture unlike some devices I have tried before... I have not played any graphics intensive games on this phone so far though...
a game like archibalds adventure cant even scroll properly. i mean it looks like it was taken out of the 80s.
Maybe it is because this phone has up to 5 times more pixels then previous phones you have owned?
whats the point in it having 5 times the pixels if it cant cope with them

What videos? Are these videos, by chance a chintzy 320x240? I've tried avi videos in standard DVD resolution, 720x480 and 640x480 and they are both choppy as hell. There are far too many apologists for the really lackluster video playback on this device. I realize it's a driver issue, but when rich multimedia playback is one of the selling points, I think it verges on false advertising when it can't play accepted video standards. Have HTC pony up the money to Qualcomm for the right drivers and I think the X1 and a number of other devices in their stable can really start to live up to their claims.
Yeah, I have to agree. 5X the pixels means nothing if the phone can't handle them
No problem for me with video...
-I recode vidéo in 800*480 with HTC Touch HD Video Converter
-I use Windows Media Player to watch video
rom im using
im using touch it xperience 3.5 but i've heard touch it 2.2 was faster
from now on if it has qualcom in the hardware spec im gonna avoid it like the plague!
I gotta admit, just when I start being happy with the Xperia video.....
I'll look over at some movie my wife is watching on the iphone and just shake my head. The Xperia is NOT impressive in the video dept. I can get video to play to ALMOST lag free and it looks pretty dang good. But c'mon already! With the hardware capabilities of this phone, video should look all around amazing.

I have converted some Chinese tv serial episodes using magic video converter and they came out great, not too sure of the res but by memory its around 640x480 to 720x480 as you comment... no lag and sound is better than I expected... I also have a movie or two that works just as well, again Chinese stuff (as I am learning Chinese I find this is an interesting way to help out with both reading (subtitles) and listening)... I am using coreplayer and have it in full screen mode when watching...
Oh and I am by no means an apologist... if it was crap I would say so, but its not... but then I dont expect my phone to act or have the same capacity as my laptop/pc.... its a phone and does what it says on the tin...
I dont get it. I have a stock ROM and my video is perfect. I downloaded an Ipod converted (m4v) version of Superbad and it looks and sounds amazing FULL screen btw). All i had to do was rename the file to mp4 and it works perfectly! Maybe there is something else going on with you guys phones. I also have Anchorman, SemiPro, and several others running perfectly. Besides TF3D, i dont have any other plug ins installed.
I also have no issues with video playback,
I am running Touch IT 2.2 which i am not willing to replace yet because the ROM is fast as hell and bug free. Just used the HD converter in the sticky on page 1 along with a few speed tweeks from the Mark a Clienti thread and POW!! full screen, top notch quality res and not a single lag or frame drop in sight.
I have noticed that a lot of people are having issues with various applications on their SE X1's but i dont seem to have had any issues at all. I started with the clean ROM and made sure i installed all of my required apps and tweaks in one go, making sure to reset after each install. After that i just sat back and watched it fly, maybe i'm just lucky

You might want to check out what the bitrates are on those videos. Your average avi video is about 1.3-1.4 gigabytes in size for your standard 1.75-2 hour movie. That comes to about 1,500 kbs. Anything significantly less than that and it looks kind of muddy when viewed on a regular sized TV screen. Ideally, you shouldn't even have to recode video you ripped yourself. In theory you should be able to rip once and play on all your appliances that are video capable using a standard codec with reasonable settings. An avi file 1.3 gigabytes in size for a 2 hour movie is entirely reasonable and I highly doubt that you can achieve that with the X1 in its current state. I've tried extensively and the only way you can make it play with any level of smoothness is by dramatically reducing the resolution or dropping the bitrate precipitously. You can't just drag an acceptable video from your computer onto this phone and expect it to play acceptably the way it is right now. As for the expectation that it's only a phone I say that the drivers are the only thing that prevent it from meeting the expectations. I'll bet the hardware is there, but HTC just feels like being cheap. Heck, there are phones debuting at MWC right now that do full motion 1080p playback of h.264 video. The X1, which isn't more than a few months old, can't smoothly play back a 640x480 1,500 kbs video. At $700 retail and their promise of a full-featured multi-media device that is scandalous. I dare anyone to say otherwise.

You sound much more knowledgable than me so I wont try to argue with you, but I have quite a few avi files that are around the 800mb size that play very well and are crisp and clear even on a bigger screen (my laptop is 15.4 and pc is 19inches), in fact I find it pretty rare to have an avi file over 900 Mb for a standard movie (up to 2hours I would guess is pretty standard)... As another poster a couple of posts back mentioned, I notice a few problems that people are having that I dont... thank goodness as with my level of understanding I would be hard pressed to now what it is I need to search for to fix the problem...

Few questions, Slow flash, Slow transfers? and laggy?!!

After watch some youtube videos, about OPTIMUS 2X, i'm a little depressed...
Optimus 2X is optimized for flash right? so, webrowsing is the best thing on this phone but...
->why can't play fluently 1080P youtube, when Galaxy SII can?
->Why load slow than galaxy S?
And, why optimus 2X can't record videos with higher bitrate? ( galaxy S II is at 30mb/s when optimus 2x stills at 20mb/s ) transfers speed?
Thanks for all and forgive my english.
Because the Galaxy S-II is a stronger phone in several keyareas.
That being said, there is lots of room in the software part of the phone for improvement from lg's more or less laggy and buggy design. I hope for a better phone later this year with the update.
However, I'm on cm7 (cyanogenmod) now, and it's a much better device now, even though it's a nightly. So, the phone have the potential to be great m.

You can play flash in 1080P fluently now? or maybe with the update to gingerbread?
Thanks for the reply
Just tried playin some 1080p flash trailer and its fluent on webview and fullscreen, its just the stock rom that sucks. With a custom one this thing finaly deserve its name OMG SO FAST
still cant play 1080p flash youtube in browser fluently in cm7
Yeah im on fr17
So, the Optimus 2X is better than SGSII in Flash finally?
i whant the phone for gaming, music, web browsing and youtube, basically.
Thanks for all the answers
Once again, the Galaxy S-II is in fact a faster phone, so that's worth looking into the. The Tegra2 might be better at doing multimedia content such as video and flash, but I doubt it. My knowledge is quite limited.
One thing's for sure - while both phones, the Optimus 2x and S-II, support flash content, it's not the same as they are good at it. Flash is some heavy lifting, and definetly not a technology well suited for phones at the current level of development.
Watching 1080p video content on CM7 on Optimus 2x is still laggy, but I'm guessing that will be fixed in the final release.
one thing i will NEVER understand is why the hell do people insist on watching 1080p videos on THEIR PHONE...
i do believe you guys understand that 1080p is 1920x1080 pixels, wheras your phone screen is 480x800, so why the hell you want those full hd vids on such a small screen ? (not concerning those who do this through hdmi) enlighten me
The HDMI-out jack is there for a reason.

Is tegra 2 a complete disappointment?

Hello,
when I bought this lg I thought that despite the bad LG support I was getting nice hardware anyway...problem is that the more I read/use it the more I realize that not even Nvidia is blameless.
They call this super-phones but:
- Nvidia doesn't release the source code and developers cannot take advantage of its full potential
- They didn't include the NEON instructions, on which Skype is based. The tegra 2 will probably never have video calls, they'll skip directly to tegra 3 for sure. I tried google talk, for what I've seen skype is smoother. Am I wrong?
- They claim 1080p video decoding. OK, problem is that I wasn't able to play ANY video with hardware acceleration, not even some youtube videos that use h.264 main profile.
I wonder why Samsung would use this chipset so limited in the galaxy R.
And I think that when it will be "time" for it be mature tegra 3 will come out and everyone will stop supporting it.
(is it possible to use Samsung galaxy R code to implement to the LG in some way? Since they share the same hardware...)
Tegra 2 is excellent, LG just ducked it up.
That's all there is to say

yes, i agree with you, tablets usually use tegra2. so nvidia is not disappointing anyone or anyvendor
The major advantage of Tegra 2 is time to market -- it was available a good quarter or two before other dual core SoCs.
And that's about it. NV seems to have rushed it out of the door and failed to follow up with a higher clocked version, nor offering any developer support. They're only interested in selling as many Honeycomb tablets as possible, and even then, they've failed to put any dent on iPad2 sales.
Not having NEON and refusing to open up sources is a huge letdown for sure. And it is the only dualcore not able to change clocks individually between two cores, which doesn't help battery life. On idle it would help just to not use the second core, which tegra2 doesn't allow for.
Lets hope the Nexus Prime will be the killer device with 1.5ghz dualcore and the nice 1280x720 screen, and since it is a Nexus, devsupport. I will take it on day one it will be released

The screen size is only what corresponds to 480p, so showing anything bigger than that would be a waste of processing power, and power in general
Hi guys! Considering 720/1080p youtube playback, does it work correctly when the phone is connected to a tv via hdmi? Also, is there a difference in flash performance between stock rom and cm7? Thank you!

hdmi mirroring?
Trying to watch HD clips on the phone is stupid: the phone has not only to decode an HD stream, it has also to resize it!
Try watching an HD clip on the TV *without* mirroring (without the phone screen showing the same content), it should be much better.

That's like saying that your Panda Van should go easily up that hill with a ton of cargo because it just should. It's a ->Panda<- not a truck.
The same for the phone: if you load an HD flic on the screen the phone has to decode the stream and rescale it to fit on its smaller screen.
In essence it's almost like decoding TWO HD streams at the same time...
Now I'm sure the phone wasn't advertised as capable of decoding two streams?

[Q] iPhone 5 or the XSP?

Hello,
Does anybody here know or at least suggest me, what should I keep (I already own the iPhone 5 but I can't use it when my parents are not at home) or should I go and buy XSP (there's a discount for this device otherwise I would need to consider about S3 Mini or Xperia M) which I could use at anytime I want? Thanks to everyone who answers!
XSP is heads and shoulders better than XM or S3. And since S3 Mini is a cut-down version of S3, both in size *and* specs, IMHO there is no reason to prefer the alternatives.
You do have to remember that moving to Android means leaving the Apple ecosystem behind. You'll have to repurchase apps, and there might be some games that are not available on Android.

I know but I mean the key features like multitasking, camera, headphone that comes with the phone and so on. I know that some games on iOS aren't on Android (like Infinity Blade 2) but that doesn't matter me much, the only game I play on the phone is Clash of Clans and sometime (rlly rarely) I play Asphalt 8 (which I have purchsed for both Android and iOS, no worry for piracy) so.. I just care for the key features like the rear and the front camera. Both of the phones have 8MP camera rear camera but the exposure is different, is that a big difference between the quality? And like the screen, as I know the iPhone 5 comes with an Retina HD display and XSP with TFT HD display but with BE2/X-Reality so I don't which is better
Pretty much everything is better on the iPhone 5. It has better multitask, camera, comes with better headphones, has better hardware performances. As an XSP user, I can't think of a feature were the XSP is better than the iPhone 5, there might be some, but the iPhone is mostly better.

But as I know, Android was made for multitaking and for hardware, the XSP haves better processor and the camera is same or am I wrong?
If you want something that just works then the iPhone 5 is better.
If you want something you can play around with ROMs and have more control over the phone then the Xperia SP is better.
My preference is Xperia SP, I dont mind the iPhone as a device but its restrictions annoy me.

Android is made for multitasking, however, due to how newer apps are build, devices require more than 1GB to run smoothly. Sadly, the SP just has 1GB of RAM, which makes it slow at times. The processor is good, but the one on the iPhone 5 is the same, if not better. And no, the camera, while 8mpx, works better on the iPhone.

Hello,
Does anybody here know or at least suggest me, what should I keep (I already own the iPhone 5 but I can't use it when my parents are not at home) or should I go and buy XSP (there's a discount for this device otherwise I would need to consider about S3 Mini or Xperia M) which I could use at anytime I want? Thanks to everyone who answers!

The iPhone Camera is WAY better man.
The SP is awesome but as someone above stated,if you want something that works, the iPhone is better!
Good luck!

Ok but the iPhone still have only 1Gig RAM... Even some newer devices, even iPhone 5s didn't came with 2Gig RAM and for the headphones, both phone and headphone are using 3,5mm jack so... I can only think of the S5 and Z2(...?) to have 2Gig RAM so...

Can You post me some comparison pictures taken w/ the iPhone and the XSP? It would be really helpful.
Ok guys, looks like I'm more undecided now, can some1 do a +/- features for both phones (like comparing them). It would be great! Thanks! :highfive:
Edit1 : It would be even better, if any1 could suggest me a phone which I can play with the /system and do a normal work/sometime playing Clash Of Clans and Asphalt 8 and for music listening at the same time. I thought that the XSP can do it but it looks like it can't
Xperia SP:
+Design
+Loud speaker
+Bigger Screen
+Unique ilumination bar
+Runs a more "open" OS, Android (and outdated one)
-Camera
-Low RAM
-Materials used feels cheap at times
-Bad screen quality
Iphone 5:
+Design
+More apps
+More updates in the future (it will at least get two more mayor iOS updates)
+Premium build quality
+Better cameraS with slow-mo video (I'm not sure if it's the 5 and 5s or just the 5s)
+Better screen quality
+Better multitasking (iOS is more optimized for multitasking nowadays in my opinion, as iPhone 5 almost never lags).
-No unique feautres
-Speaker quality is okay.
+/- iOS is not as open as Android, but it's a beatiful design nevertheless.
This is what I can think of.

I can't post comparison pictures right now but there have been a lot of complaints about the XSP camera.
Some users are also experiencing some issues like blurring and extremely poor low light pictures.
If you need a good camera, dont get the XSP.
I don't think these issues are only with my device.
The phone is amazing in other aspects like hardware but if the camera is important, take a comparison from someone else has both the phones!
I'm sorry I can't put up pictures because I'm waiting at the airport
Good luck!
The camera on the SP is REALLY bad, the lenses even get scratched super easily, that's why people get blurry/overexposed pictures. If it's your priority, the more reasons to go for iPhone.

This phone can perfectly do that! Asphalt 8 runs fine with 0 lag on ultra settings and you should be able to play music when playing either of these games

And I know one thing about the i5: the WiFi sucks! My dad is always complaining about how he doesn't find any networks while I can find like 10 with my sp or that he can't connect to certain wireless network while I can

WiFi reception is perfect now!

nope its also not working. MX Player Pro is hands down the best player for android. its running the videos but with stutter. im sure this Exynos ****SET is the culprit here.
thats the reason why i and millions of other people like Snapdragon chipsets. they at least work great with great battery life and everything optimized. not like samsung. i might sell this crap soon getting only 3 hours of screen on time. and its just box opened brand new tablet. SAMSUNG DISAPPOINTED ME AGAIN, AND ITS THE LAST TIME I GOT SAMMY ****!

Did you try changing it from HW to SW. May help.
As far as I know Exynos doesn't support hardware rendering of 4k video (only 2.5k).
How do you know which is which?

How can you tell which chipset you have? I was told this had a 4k screen and I intend to use it soon.

So I have the Exynos Processor. How many different chipsets are there in the SM-T800? why would they make more than 1 kind under the same model? What are the main differences between them?
I know noobish but I would like to know. Thanks

We only have 2K screen... 2560x1600... if you download your videos in 2560x1440 they work flawless... 4K video will give you stutter no matter which player you use on this device... I've tried a bunch of them.

I tried playing a few 4k videos on my SM-T800 galaxy tab s 10.5 (exynos) and for every file it stutters.
I've tried MX player - but it defaults to S/W decoding since H/W decoding isn't supported. Even though the format is H/W supported (H264), it just doesn't allow H/W decoding at these resolutions.
BS Player defaults to S/W too, as it shows 'S/W' when it displays the player properties.
Is there no current solution? Do we just sit and wait for H/W support to be enabled in the near future - or is it just too hardware intensive on the Exynos that no one will bother.
Can somebody explain why you are playing 4k video`s on a 2k+ tablet, is it just to see if they play correctly, are they just clips, a full 4k movie must be a big file.
I use the free handbrake software on my notebook, to convert and movies or series mostly animi to nHD which is 640x360 if i am going to keep them on my tablet, the higher the video resolution the more power the tablet needs to use to display them, so not only are 4k video are huge, they use a lot of battery life to play.
John.
It's just to see if the device can actually play 4k, and to see if hardware encoding even makes a difference.
Given that 4k will be more prevalent in the future, it's just testing to see if it will be able to handle the larger bitrates/files.
Most of my 4k clips are only about 2-4 minutes in length.
I wish my 10.5" could play in hardware the new h.265 format, as the video files can be up to half the size of the current h.264 version for the same quality, but it cannot, so it will have to be played back in software mode, oh well you cannot have everything, maybe it will take a while for H.265 to catch on.
John.
Yes. Freezing temporarily. I can not believe that no solution. Note 3 has same cpu, I look its forum but nothing found.
