[Q] Overheating, throttling, gaming performance - Xperia SP Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since one month I am considering an upgrade of my good old SE Neo V. I mainly use it for gaming. After a deep research, and a lot of read I have narrowed my pick to 2 phones Xperia SP and Nexus 4. Both devices have Adreno 320 and similar price level which is vital for me. Since the overheating, throttling, gaming performance on N4 is quite well described over the web the problem seems to be the lack of similar information over XSP. I would like to kindly ask you for help with running few stress tests (you can use app StabilityTest (ROOT optional) by intostudios) and posting those results here. Also if you have some expirience with gaming on you XSP please feel free to write something about it: is there any problem with 1GB of RAM while gaming, or with touch after the device is heavily used for 30-60 min (I know about the issue when XSP is on a flat surface), are all games available for XSP?
All this data should let me make the best choice about my future phone. Thanks in advance to everyone willing to post your results below :good:

No problems while gaming. Playing iron man 3 while charging heats it up. No running out of ram issues.

Would it be possible for you to do a Stability Test to see how much CPU clock is decreassing during full load?

Real racing 3 and dead walking play with no problems at all. How do you do the stress Test?

Just type StabilityTest (ROOT optional) in google play and the application will pop-up. When you do it please post a screen shot below

I got a phone call and it stopped so I have restarted it. 3 hours its been going now. If something stops it again. I'm not sure I'm going to restart it.

Needed my phone back after five and a half hours I ended the test. Here's a screen shot from just before I ended it. Sorry but it was just taking too long.

Stress test will only end when your phone crashes. It is used to test for stability after overclocking etc.
If it doesn't crash after 30 mins then you can end it.

Seriously what's the problem? Nobody is going to keep testing the phone for you.
If 5 hours is not enough I don't know what is.

I just wanted to see how much juice the cores loose after heating up. It is an important data for me thats why I am asking for it here in xda.
@jasonwsc it's not just for me maybe someoneelse would like to know this data

Hows everyones phones?

So, Im planning on buying this phone, But, Is it a good phone, I heard this phone beats the One X in benchmarks, But, Is it laggy? Hows the battery?
It's great!
No lag and the battery is like other smartphones I think.
There's a problem with autofocus when recording in stock camera-app. Can use another.

Hey there,
I bought the P880 based upon the following reasons:
Near Retina screen
5th low power core
Removable battery
Looks like SGS2 and don't like the girly pebble looking blue SGS3
What I have found after owning it for 3 weeks:
Battery life is great, last full 24 hers on a single charge, with the exception of 1 day this week where power amp was running in the background and I didn't notice, it wiped my battery out in 3 hours - always carry a charger if your daft like me.
Its crashed twice, due to me being a fool and pushing it too hard - its just a phone after all.
Its very thin which is both good and bad, good for style, bad if you sit on it
No lag between screens and using apps - I play a lot of heavy games apps and they all run smooth as silk
The screen definition is superb - crisp, clear and always bright
LG UI3 is OK, not as refined as Samsung, but I like the fact that they don't pre-load as many applications as Samsung
All round a great buy, very happy, looks great and performs better
Hi,
Replying late. But yes today I took a benchmark test. Restarted my phone and first thing I ran the Quadrant. Was happy to see the results.

My phone works great...and battery is good and very good if you underclock cpu to 1.2ghz. even after underclocking cpu it is very smooth and no visible unplayable lags even with high end HD games.
Also with recent upgrades camera auto focus work fine if you dont believe check photos taken by my phone in best pics thread...
Compared to HTC OneX LG 4X have extra 64gb sd card option (so 16gb internal + 64gb sdcard) and battery upgrade option which is not possible in htc.. rest of the hardware is same GPU,CPU,RAM,..etc.

My phone works great,no issues at all. Just few min ago, rooted it
Only thing bothering me is the Camera both Pic Quality & 1080p video....Damn, on low light it just terrible !!!
i'll try the MODDed Camera app and see any improvement can be made.
Overall I'm satisfied !!!

The battery isn't that bad as you think.

I think I did good today with slightly heavy use.
I will say that I don't consistently get this performance but when I do I don't complain.
Also juice defender seriously makes a big improvement.

This screenshot essentially shows us nothing without the other two. You need to click display in order for us to see the screen on time and click where it says 23hrs 15min as well. We need all that.
The only thing you've shown us is that the phone made it 23 hours and that you actually charged it for a little bit as well LMAO

ok so i came to the atrix at a what i have to say is a perfect time. i bought the phone and 2 days later there was root! i mean i was pretty lucky, had to wait for the unlock code and suffer one day without root! not to shabby. now while i had minimal time without root my battery seemed fine. however, i have since installed setcpu after root and dropped the clock down to 384mhz. while i know its slow! it still gets the job done. have a look at the screen shots.

if your asking me which i think you are...none at all. i mean dont get me wrong it takes an extra second in response to what you want to do. its by no means fast at that speed but i ended up getting nearly 21 hours outta it. the battery died while i was playing a game lol. i was hoping to beat it into submission that way. took less than 3 hrs to fully charge back up as well...
You guys need to show your screen on time. Without that, the numbers are pretty meaningless.

Power management(eco mode controller) problem in 4.3

Same here, with 4.2.2 I had like 17 days in standby but I saw when I reboot my phone, the time left switch to less like it will calibrate him self. To me is inaccurate anyway, there is no way to keep you phone alive so long like it show you so I will not be bothered about it. Make a calculation on your own.
I thought ur phone is already in 4.3?

Yes, it is. I was just saying was even worse with 4.2.2 but no big changes even on 4.3.
What I'm wondering is, how do you people know how many hours there should be left?
Does it not calculate this depending on the data you supply it with (your previous usage on cycles it has monitored)
Mine showed pretty low numbers very early on since I was fiddeling so much with it that the battery was flat pretty quickly.
Later the predictions increased, since I started to use it a bit less..
If you delete all the info it has to go on all the time, how will it be able to give you correct output?
how long does your phone last usually?
You say inaccurate, do you mean it shows too many or too few hours left?

In my case it shows always more than what he will really be on battery. This was with 4.2.2 and still with 4.3. You right about how it work and how the calculation are managed but really the calculation are untruthfully. I will never take in consideration what the phone saying so this was my only advice.
In my case my battery drains more if my power management malfunctiond and it bothers me..
Sent from my C6903 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Is this normal?

For the screen to cause fast battery drain like this? Another thing, the device gets immensely hot, very quickly when playing real racing 3. Even on power save. Is that a note 3 thing too?
Edit: would like to add that screen was on 95% of that time

Screen on time like that and high brightness will cause any phone to eat up the battery and get hot...Play games on a tablet ....

I'm not asking for a magic cure-all, but there's no way in the world I could afford any tablet, not on my payrate. I only got the note 3 by trading a bunch of stuff. I was just under the impression that new devices were supposed to get LESS warm than their older counterparts. This device reminds me of owning a tegra 3 phone..

How long was the screen on for?
It's normal for any device to get hot when playing games, especially when running graphically intensive apps. It has nothing to do with whether the device is old or new.

That sounds about right then. Screen time can usually last up to 5 hours before the battery dies.
Installing dynamic kat actually 100% fixed heat and really improved screen on batt life. I only use 6-12% an hour. Depending on cpu load

About to return the phone, I need explanation!

Been using it for two weeks already, got the lollipop update, did a clean factory reset, everything went well, benchmarks were giving me high scores, and now.... you'll see the pictures, anybody can tell me what's going on? Thanks!
I didn't do a clean just the update but I just might because it's moving Soooooo slow it lags like I can press stop on my music app poweramp and it takes like 10sec to register the screen tap........pathetic
