[TIP] Better colour with flash photos. - Nexus 4 General

Hey all, this isn't a mind blowing tip, it's just something easily overlooked. Forgive me if it's been covered but i could not find it.
When taking photos with flash I found under my tungsten light source that everything had a blue tint to it.

This I found results from the phone incorrectly detecting the white balance.
It is easily fixed by pressing the picture button and holding it while your phone focuses and measures the shot. Then a second later release it and the results are a marked difference.
To those using any camera with a half and full press button this isn't a large surprise but with the trend to simple tap on smartphones I find this easily overlooked.
Thanks

He's a street dog. Someone found him as a pup in the rain and put him online. He's pretty mixed as a breed but has some hound in him. And much smaller than a mastiff :cyclops:
I didnt know about the hold focus either. I felt it wasnt obvious because the N4 unlike htc's and iphones doesnt do an instant photo. it does the shenanigan of focusing with the ring and all the jazz so one would assume it would measure its white balance then. Anyway you live and you learn

Oh just like the video says I am a total noob when it comes to android phones. I have always had iPhones from the first one to 5, and after it broke I thought I mix it up and got a lumia 920 (terrible experience I had no clue what I was doing) and that bought the Nexus 4. I got to say there is a whole lot of little tricks such as this which is great, so thanks again for posting.

Nexus 7 Reviews and Tips Videos

Hi all,
I've started making youtube videos all about the Nexus 7 and I thought your community might find them useful. Some are reviews of different aspects of the device while others are short 1 minute(ish) tips to get the best of your new toy. I hope you enjoy and find them useful and I'll be updating this thread each time I do a new video.
Thanks for watching,
vgjfelix
So here is another video. I'll keep added to the thread:
I think your screen may be slightly lifted on the upper left.

To check more effectively, hold the device with the right portrait side closest to you. Hold it so the bezel on the opposite side becomes a thin, silver line.
If the screen isn't completely flush, your display will interrupt that silver line.
Nice tip.
You had me sweating for a second but checked again and all is fine on mine. I think it's just reflection on the screen that's doing that

That's great. Mine has separation in about the same area, so the sympathy I felt when I spotted that line has soured into jealousy.
These videos are really well done by the way. Maybe a little basic for most people on this forum, but I'm new to this stuff so they're good for me.
I wish I'd seen the Wifi video before replacing my old router. The connection wasn't as strong as I felt it should be, so I bought a new, much better reviewed one. I should have borrowed a device from someone and done what you've suggested to make sure it wasn't just a problem with the Nexus 7. Also, it would have been useful to write down a few speed tests before replacing the old router, so I could compare.
This video would have helped me make a more informed decision. And I forgot to test the camera, so thanks for the tips.
I've attached a photo of mine failing the bezel test, although it looks pretty flush from the other side. Congrats on getting a solid one.
From where do you have bought your nexus 7? It is so flawless and glad to see there are indeed good ones.

You must be using the XDA app. In browser (which I prefer over the app) when I see the post, the videos aren't links. They are square movie boxes that allow me to watch the videos right from the forum, and the thumbnail is the title. I think that when people post videos, they aren't thinking about the people using the app, which shows all videos as links, lol.

If you are posting videos for others to see then you have to consider all kind of users and most of the users here use the app because it is neater than xda website. To the point and without any distraction.

A question today. What is the Nexus 7? This highlight reel might answer that:
A review of a case for the Nexus 7 and a broader question of whether you should use a case or not.

I am not using any case on my nexus since lasy one month and I am not planning to use any case. I like the way it is without the case. I bought this tablet mostly for games and putting in the case would make it hard to handle while gaming. Cases make tablets heavy, thick and harder to carry. I intended to buy a sleave case to carry it around but now the tablet is too old to spend money on sleeve.

A tour of Google Now in this video:

again defected..

So guys I finally bought n7 today (launch day) I checked n7 for any issues it could had. Screen was ok, multitouch looked nice also...but when I filled it with some apps it just crashed to boot screen two times. First time hard reset - vol.down+power worked. Second time it was completely stucked in boot screen (X logo). Nothing helped.
So I went to the shop and instatly replaced for the brand new n7. As I came home I realised it has a bit of screen lifting (didnt see this issue in the shop). But rly I could live with it since its minor not like in the videos. But the funny thing is I tried to check out inside of n7. Somehow I couldnt detach the back So it looks like I got glued tablet. I feel special. And the shop is out of stock so yay from tomorrow im again without n7.
And...?

I wouldn't have changed so quickly. Rebooting sometimes happens. Its doesn't mean that the tablet has a defect. Since i bough mine i had 2 reboots. Apart from that it is perfect in everything.
What can i say ? I love the damm thing.

Have to agree with this, he got a tablet, and instantly returned it instead of giving it time to settle in, then when he got his next tablet he decided that because of an issue that doesn't affect the tablet he is going to return it again. Oh but there's a twist! Seriously, this couldn't have been added to any of the other "Buyers beware" or "Screen lift" threads?

You didn't need to know my life story but I though why make a new thread about it? I could just post in in your useless thread instead.

constructive critism? nop, poor trolling. So i created a topic about my problem. Your trolling is even worse and less mannered than what I did. So get out if you have nothing to say. That post hunting doesnt give you right to say OT ****. If I did something wrong a mod can move it to the right place and I will apologize. Love the smartasses like you.
Back to topic. The first n7 I waited, rebooted it couple of times, etc but it didnt help.
The second n7..I didnt see it was used already, even charger wasnt packed.
About for you "minor" issues. I buy a brand new product from a huge tech company. I dont expect to repair what I buy. I dont want to buy a product who is marked as "broken". Maybe for you its nothing but for me, its like 2/3 of my salary.
Maybe you love defected goods so you can fix them..I dont.
Cause ppl like you they dont bother to make high quality stuff. Thank you.

Manufacture defect in our screens? Internal Dip?

The day i got my Galaxy S4 i went straight to charge the device. I left it on my nightstand which is under a window and when i saw the reflection of my blinds through the screen, they where bent out of shape and the reflection looked distorted. Looking closer, the screen seems to have a circular dip in the middle left-ish area. All the devices I tested this do not have a distort. (iphone 5 and 4S, the SIII)
I'd like for everyone to look at there device and make sure they don't have this also. I cant check the devices over at carrier stores, abit busy sadly...
I've given a Sample of lines that u can use as a test and also left a quick video, ill try to make a better one but its all i could at this moment. Also its extremely hard to get it on a video vs what u see in person =/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ej5VCPnKls
Best way's too test are as follows.
1) place your phone right in front of you on your computer desk and look at your Monitors reflection. It works extremely well when you look at Lines or a lot of text.
2) Look at a bunch of stuff that's well lit.

Man, I have exactly the same problem and the easiest way for me to see it is to have a reflection of a fluorescent tube on the black screen. It's ugly! This doesn't seem to be a universal thing, though, because this is the first post I have come across since I found out about the distortion problem. Did you find out anything at Bestbuy?

My first galaxy s4 had dead pixels, my second galaxy s4 had scuffing all over it, a large scratch on the MICRO sd card port, overheated and would constantly shut off, followed by the display that completely died a day later. Sprint advised me to give the HTC one a shot. As soon as I got the HTC one home, noticed paint run off, gaps between panels, dings, dents, pretty much the poorest quality control standards I have ever seen. Now I have to find away to get sprint to allow a FOURTH return on a 600.00 device. I may have to get mean, I dont like to act that way, but what sprint has put me through to obtain a working 600.00 high end device is not acceptable, I would not wish the experience I am going through on my worse enemy.
Im not picky, and I understand mistakes when they happen. But two damaged/defective S4's, and one damaged/defective HTC one in matter of 7 days? I really cant even believe it.
All I buy is Samsung products when it comes to electronics, never in my life have I EVER received two defective units in a row. I feel like a crazy crack addict every time I go back to the sprint store and request a replacement. If sprint didn't have a 14 day satisfaction guarantee, I would be out 600.00, because there is no way in a million years samsung or HTC would take responsibility for scuffing or damage to the body of the device. Even with sprints 14 day satisfaction guarantee, you are only allowed 1 device exchange. So basically, im entitled to nothing with this issue, and any day sprint is going to show me the door or refer me to Asurion for a 3 day old 600 dollar phone.

I discovered something on the nexus 7 :D

Hey guys, today at work I discovered something with my nexus 7 I'll do a video maybe later
The thing I discovered is : under the right top corner and a bit on top of the left bottom corner there are 2 magnets sensors and when you put 2 magnets on those the screen will turn off, and if you put them down it will turn on by itself
I have 2 magnets on my case for the n7 that I bought on eBay and I just discovered them
I hope nobody already made a post about that

Not everybody can know everything... I didn't know about the magnet feature until a couple of months ago. It's not exactly highlighted as a major selling point by Google/Asus.
I only recently discovered, that by LONG-PRESSING the back button whilst in the AOSP browser in the ROM I'm currently running, it brings up the BOOKMARKS/HISTORY screen... this isn't documented anywhere, as far as I know.
So it's to martinko23's credit, that he/she has taken the ribbing with good grace and humour... and I'd rather info (even blindingly obvious info - for some), be made known... for those who don't know.

Ged.

My Review Of Nexus 5

Gunna make it nice and sweet
Pros
Screen beautiful
speed
ceramic buttons
Design
thin/light
cons
terrible battery, so wish it was better
camera hit and miss, expected better
back plastic is'nt the best feeling feels cheap
on white version the speaker phone is white on the front making it look stupid black then white there
4.4 kitkat is all google now 3 ways to access it (really) why so many irritating
first impressions is if you have it keep it, if your on the edge i would go with another phone tbh the s4 or something bit dissapointed 70 quid more then my last year nexus and not worth the warrant of the increase
Going to give my feedback nice and sweet.
Terrible Review. I learned a lot.
op is an idiot. moving along
Thanks for your initial impressions.
The battery should improve after a few more cycles, so give it some time. Others have reported good initial battery performance, which is interesting.
Early shots taken with the N5 looked really sharp and fairly comparable to the iPhone 5s. Can you elaborate where it fell short of expectations?
If the back plastic is anything like the N7, I think the feel of it is really nice and comfortable. Frankly it's a probably a better choice than having a glass back and is also part of the reason why it's so light. I don't mind this =)
OP needs a lesson on how to write reviews
Yeah. That.

How people test out battery life early on is beyond me....
It takes a full week for battery to adjust in my experience (and many times it gets WAY better in that week span).
With a review like this you should have just piggy backed off of someone elses thread.
I really hope the battery isn't terrible since coming from my Note 2 I got spoiled.
- Oh the beating the OP will endure until the ref jumps in and stops it
10/10 Best Review ever. :good:
I wish we could down vote a thread.

You can, you can give it 1 star up towards the top where it says rate.
just report the thread to the mods, which i did, thats like downvoting, if it doesn't get deleted then maybe a mod will merge it into one of the other threads

Typical fanboyism. Someone doesn't like a device everyone lines up to flame him.
Let's be frank, the N5 will fall short on all comparison reviews to all current flagship.
Just get over that fact.

i am fine with his "review" but sorry for such an small review, i think we can agree that it isn't even a review, i am fine when it gets merged into a thread

No.
We're not ribbing on the OP because we disagree with him.
We're just giving him **** because we're sick and tired of seeing stupid posts like these on the forums.
This is also not a matter of elitism or ganging up on newer members.
Anybody can write a generic, two-bit review like this one.
If you're going to post a review, have some substance and be scientific about it.
Tell us what you did on your device, what apps you have on. Don't just write oh battery sucks.
Most people just have the common courtesy to keep it in an existing thread so we don't have to see a hundred of these type of these "new posts" everyday.
The next thing you know, somebody is going to write oh the nexus 5 has such **** terrible voice quality - oh I forgot to mention I called from a dead zone in the middle of nowhere.

My review for the day one:
Positives:
-great design and shape
-screen and natural colours
-love the white "plastic" material, rather feels like ceramic tile of some sort, not plastic. great build
-speedy and responsive
Negatives:
-battery is main concern, didnt last me from 9 am to 6pm with moderate usage
-slow charging
-kitkat lacking in features and settings
-context menu missing on some apps
-3 main screen buttons (on the bottom of the screen) still taking valuable space
Will give it a go a bit longer, not making any rush decisions
