[Q] Professional translations - is it worth it? - Localization

Hello developers,
I'm planning to translate my application to a couple of languages and I was wondering whats the best way to go? Could anyone that translated his application anwser me the following questions? (I'm really interested in the real life statistics not theories)
- Did automatic translations boost the number of download in your app? How much if any?
- Does going from automatic translations to professional translations boost the number of download to justify the money spend on them? Or is it better to make automatic translations and dump the money into app marketing?
- What're the good and not so expensive sites to get professional translations?

So no one ever localized their apps?

I know this is an old thread but...
- Did automatic translations boost the number of download in your app? How much if any?
A bit in countries like Germany, but not a great deal. Enough to cover the cost in our case. It perhaps gave us 5-10% more downloads although obviously this is only an educated guess.
The problem is to be effective you need to repeat your marketing in the said language too (so G. Play description, blog postings, and so on).
- Does going from automatic translations to professional translations boost the number of download to justify the money spend on them?
Yes, IMHO not worth doing automatic translation, you'd be better off with English than badly translated text.
- Or is it better to make automatic translations and dump the money into app marketing?
See above really. If you have limited funds I'd suggest doing one or two languages well. In fact do one, and see if you notice any difference (then at least you'll have your app ready to add more languages if you want to)
Of the languages we support the most cost effective are German, French, Spanish, Russian. It probably depends on your app a bit. Koreans are good buyers of apps, but our app doesn't support the Korean language yet.
There are a couple of features of German (in particular its verylongwords) which make our app more useful there.

I used oneskyapp which seems to be fairly reliable, it's something like $0.10 per word from memory. There are a couple of glitches in their website but other than that it's a well-designed service.
There are others I'm sure.

The reply might be a little late but for anyone else looking into this.
Imagine you finding an app developed from China with really bad English (if you are a native English speak).
Your perception of the app will diminish before you even download it. Using auto translation services might actually make it worse.
As a minimum get the app profile translated into the language of your choice, then perhaps the keywords.

Not sure how good rosetta stone is.
If you've got time and money, you can check out EF. I'm considering this as we speak.
Do you have a tablet, an iPad perhaps? There are a few "good" (never tested them myself ) apps for learning languages for a tablet.
My best bet is Google Translate. Although, it mixes up and messes up the words at times, it can actually be pretty effective.

But can it also learn you the grammar of a new language? I sometimes translate something from a foreign language to Dutch (just for the fun of it) and it doesn't make much sense most of the time....
Google translate won't really teach you that good.

Use Anki for Japanese, or so I've been told.
Best way to learn it is to uproot yourself and live there. Do not speak your own native language, only theirs and soon you'll get the nuances.

Short question list about building apps (URGENT)

Hi, my name is Gazi and I’m an 18 year old student (economics) in the Netherlands.
I’m working on a business plan for a schoolproject. We’ve got to write a business plan of a product we want to launch. After brainstorming for a couple of days I got the idea to launch a mobile application for students at our school.
For my business plan I need 2 people to answers some questions of mine, so I can get more information about the financial and technical feasibility. I would really appreciate it if you would take the time to answer a couple of questions for me. I was actually going to ask these questions to an app builder from the Netherlands, but he just called me telling me he doesn’t have any time anymore, and I need to finish this asap because the business plan needs to be finished this Friday.
It would probably not even take 10 min to answer these questions and I would really really appreciate it if you guys could help me out.
I will first give some general information about the idea of the application I have in mind:
I want to call this app ‘’App2Date’’. The purpose of App2Date will be to make it easier for students to study. It’s the solution for problems which many students are coping with. App2Date will have functions such as:
- The ability for teachers to let students know when they will not be at school, or are too late (for example, because of traffic). Many students of our school have got to travel around 1hr til they’re at school. It sucks to hear the teachers not there after having traveled for over an hour at 7AM.
- Giving push notifications of important messages on ELO (ELO is our ‘’electronical study environment’’ which is accessible via internet right now. We can see announcements teachers have published, and have access to study material such as powerpoints and word doc.s
These functions are the 2 functions we definitely want to use in the app. IF it is possible (technically and financially) there are some other features we would like to use:
- Push notifications from Osiris (Osiris is the online database with our results  accessible via internet atm)
- Having access to your timetable
I understand you can not give precise answers at some questions (for example the financial ones), that’s okay’. I don’t need precise answers. I just want to have an idea of what amount of money I should think, would it cost more than 1000$, more than 10.000$, or just 200$, etc.
Questions:
Orientation
- For how long have you been building apps?
- Do you operate in some kind of category apps (games, social media, etc.)?
- Do you make applications for your own, or do you mostly make applications for companies who ask you to?
Costs (general)
- What’s the average price for building an application?
o One off costs
o Fixed costs
o Other costs?
- Is it much more expensive to build an app that is connected with the internet?
- Which criteria are most important for the price of building an applications?
App2Date in general
- What is your first impression of App2Date?
- Do you think there is a market for App2Date?
o Why?
- How long do you think it will take to build an application such as App2Date?
Technical
- Is it possible to make so many different external systems work together in 1 mobile app?
- Is this possible by linking the app to these external systems, or would it mean you’d have to build different systems within the app itself?
- Is there a function of which you think it would be impossible to make it work?
- If you would have to make a top 3 of the functions you think that would take least effort to build in the app, what would your top 3 be like?
Choose from:
 Notifications from teachers who are late
 Notifications from announcements from ELO
 Online database with your results
 Timetable
 Ability to check if there are any classrooms free (this can now only be seen by the schools system)
Financial
- What do you think it would cost to build App2Date with the functions I would definitely want to use? (notifications from announcements on ELO + notifications from teachers)?
- Which functions would cost the most (and about how much? $1000, $100? Etc.)
- If you would have to make a top 3 of the functions you think that would financially be feasible the best, what would your top 3 be like?
Choose from:
 Notifications from teachers who are late
 Notifications from announcements from ELO
 Online database with your results
 Timetable
 Ability to check if there are any classrooms free (this can now only be seen by the schools system)
- Could you tell me, for each function, what you think it would cost (about how much?)
- How do YOU think it would be the best to make money out of this?
Again, I would really appreciate it if you could answer these questions to me. You’d be my lifesaver. Also I didn't know if this was the right place to post this thread, so apologies if this is in the wrong section.
Thanks in advance
No way I am going to read that. TL;DR Please.

aaaannnnddd u just had to bump the thread, didnt u? :silly::good:
If you want your app to go international, I'll change the name. An app called "App2Date" that involves students and teachers will be looked down on in the states. To date in the USA means to be in a relationship not conducive to education, if you know what I mean.
@ OP...go here and post your question and concerns.

Hi!
I can not find apps on GP k560 Apps.
Much depends on the subject matter of your applications and games. For example, I had a popular game about fairies (as winx) and Russia : D
Just due oganic search .
It's toooooo late reply, but perhaps it can be useful for somebody
My experience with the app services. In my opinion, App Reviews is one of the best. They have different packages based on the bonuses... I bought their services severeal times and it was: organic installs, in-time sevice without delay and really high-quality reviews...:good:
i suggest you to do ASO (App Store Optimization) for you game. this strategy will give you a better result. At other hand you can find some bogs sites or app site reviews from google. thanks

Professional translation/localization services

Hi,
I have translated some apps and games into other languages and it has worked really well, i have noticed that my downloads have increased.
I dont have many time for localization exchanges, so i usually use professional translators. I would want to know, if you have tried them, which are the best services to translate the apps and games into other languages.
My experience:
- AppLingua. It is a good service, it works great but it is really expensive. https://applingua.com/
- OnTranslate. This is a new service that i have tried and it has worked great for me. The price for professional translations are the best ones. 0,04 € per word in expert translations is great. http://ontranslate.com/
- Icanlocalize: I have tried ICanLocalize but i am not very satisfied because they have not been fast in the translation. It is also expensive http://www.icanlocalize.com/
- Google Play translation partners: They work correctly too, but they are very very expensive so i think will not try them...
Please share your experience!
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing! I've had the experience with Google Translate. It was awful Users compained loudly...
Than I decided to pay. I was looking for an agency that would meet my criteria:
1) have experience doing app translation
2) each translator is NATIVE speaker in the target language
3) reasonable prices
In the end I chose Alconost. Since than I have no problems with localization.
By the by I guess quality and money go hand and hand in this industry, and good job can't be cheap... decide for yourself

I do this mostly for fun, and I believe my services (especially considering the quality of product you will receive) are among the best on the market value-wise.
Right now I charge $20 for continuous life-long translation of your app, no matter how complicated the task is. That means I'll be there for you pretty much 24/7 to localize any updates for your app on short notice.
