[Q] Phone calls sound muffled to others - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am having a problem that others also seem to have on this phone, where people on the other end say it sounds like I am in a wind tunnel or several feet from the phone. My fiance has the same phone and I swapped phones with her and spoke over it and sure enough that's what it sounds like. There's a thread about it over on the sprint forums http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2262648
I am on sprint but decided to take this over here because I believe there are more users on the international side of things. Basically what I would like to know is, is anyone here having this problem. On the sprint forum about this issue they said it is a software problem, however I don't believe a software problem would be consistent through rom and kernel flashes including wipes. I rather not change out my phone even tho it has a few dings and scratches because of the risk of getting one with the updated hboot and not being able to downgrade and s-off again. However I also seem to be having an issue with bluetooth, where I have to carry the phone in my hand in order to have reception, even if I so much as tuck the phone under my arm I loose all bluetooth reception to the point the headset disconnects, so I think I have a problem with the bluetooth antennae.
Does anyone else have any of these problems?

Hi, I have exactly the same problem. I have bought an HTC One without operator in France.
Sometimes, the person I'm talking with thinks I'm in a cave or tunnel, and after 30 sec (approx.), he can hear me properly. Or sometimes, he cannot hear me at all or very very low and jerky sound. This disappears if I shout few seconds over the mic, then communication is good...
I was waiting the 4.2.2 update with impatience, hoping this will solve my problem (if there was a bug correction for that), but still have the problem after updating (jerky sound which disappears if I shout, for the moment I don't have the tunnel sound problem).
Now I suppose there is a problem with the mic (which is a twin-membrane microphone to deliver distortion free), and I think I will send it back to maintenance to fix it, unless someone knows how to solve it...
Thanks for other feedback.

I am running 4.2.2 and other people have told me the same thing about me sounding muffled.

Phonecalls keep cutting out during mid call.and people complain they cant hear me

Hi
Had the kaiser 3 months now..had the initial prob with the speaker phone...where people just couldnt hear me..now this..
I know its the phone has tried my chip in my old phone and no problems.
everytime I make a call the other people say that my voice is cutting out and coming back in..sometimes the phone call just cuts off and i have to call back..
anybody here having the same probs with Kaiser/wario III etc.??????
Rish
This could be a hardware, software issue. Without checking we cannot tell. Hopefully it's either software or the "banswitching" issue. If it is a new thing that has just started then a hard reset may solve the problem.
Many folks with newer phones in areas where different available phone bands are present, report dropped calls as the phone seeks to change to the strongest signal.
See this thread (one of many) that mentions the problem) also note the Bandswitch application that lets you fix the phone to one band to avoid the problem:

I presume you've tried turning off Microphone AGC (Automatic Gain Control) if it was enabled and you're using the speakerphone?

[PROB] fuze-BT issue

OK, I'm pretty sure BT worked on the phone. Now, any time I answer from a BT device, the incoming caller is muted. He can hear me, I can't hear him.
If I transfer the caller to the phone (which btw I can hear him) and back again to the BT device, I can then hear him. If I answer the incoming call from the phone buttons, I can hear the caller on my BT device.
I must've spent like 30 calls to my phone (I'm ticked as I'm sure each one counted on my minutes) thinking of different ways to fix this.
I thought it was my BT headset, but it works on my Tilt. So I tried it in my car BT. It can't hear the caller either. So something is wrong.
If I turn off MS Voice Command (which by the way, I reg restored to before I modded it to work) my phone will make the sounds, I hear a beep in my ear. If I answer it form my headset, it works!
I could've sworn I had MSVC turned on ever since I got the unit. And I know I talked to people on my BT headset. Only thing is I don't know if I talked to someone after I did the non-att bloat hardreset.
Anybody have any ideas before I reset my phone?
had similar issue
i had the same problem and tried everything possible till i hard reset.....That fixed the problem initially.....but after i setup MSVC after a few calls it again started doing the same thing. I will be calling HTC tomorrow......will keep you posted unless someone else has an actual solution.
Update
After a couple of hours on the phone with HTC and ATT tech support....it all comes down to it being a hardware error. I went into a ATT store swapped my phone out and came back only to find the touch wheel does not work....went back got another one and finally one that works...bluetooth works fine and so does eveything else.....at least for now

I don't think its hardware that is broken in some units. At least I hope not. Someone else here said they got it to work after resetting the device only to have it break again later. For now, I have my fingers crossed that someone can fix this. Sounds like a BT stack or something that is bad.

Judging by the fact that you mention MSVC I am betting this is part of it. I have seen a ton of people complaining about it not working correctly. I think we need to start with that in the hunt.
True. Its either MSVC or BT stack. or both.
HTC Confirmation
I got a confirmation from that it is a software related issue with MSVC but they cannot release a fix until ATT approves it. The only way to speed this up is to have as many fuze users call either ATT or HTC and complain about this.
Try turning off Announce Incoming Caller. Supposedly this is the problem.
Agreed though, we MUST complain to AT&T and HTC on all issues - otherwise we all just sit here and ***** to each other and nothing happens cause they don't know how irked we are...

[Q] Samsung galaxy s reciever cannot hear call

I have a samsung galaxy s that has been updated to android 2.2 (JM7)on vodafone the phone has been repaired once as it dropped received calls. The problem I now have is that when I make a call i can hear someone perfectly but my words are mumbled and sound distant and they struggle to hear what I am saying. Does anyone know of a fix for this! it is driving me mad I don't want to send the phone off to be fixed again as this takes a week. It does not happen all the time and is nothing to do with the reception. Checked the microphone on sounds recording and it is fine.
It is nothing to do with the placement of my hand over the microphone when making a call as I already have tested this. I also do not think the microphone is dodgy as it does not happen all the time. I have a feeling it might be a firmware problem but I am on the latest update according to KIES.
Can anyone help on the community . It is really frustrating because I like the phone but it is not much use if people cannot not here me! is there any fix for this. Spent ages on the internet and cannot find anything relevant.
well don't trust kies..
don't know JM7 but your firmware might be the issue.
try a newer one if possible.

[Q] Low Microphone Call Quality & last firmware upgrade

Does anyone of you have experienced a low microphone volume/quality in call conversations?
People from the other side of the phone often tell me they cannot hear me... and this is quite
annoying.
I have read something about a noise cancellation problem. Have you the same problem? Any
SW solution to it? How did you manage it?
Thank you
Yeah, I also hear that often. It started happening after the Gingerbread update. It seems HTC decreased the mic sensitivity to fix the echo problem but they probably went a bit too far.
I just got the 2.30.405.1 OTA update 30 mins ago. Let's hope they've fixed this issue and also the wifi sensitivity problem.
Is it a new gingerbread upgrade? I have not received any notification yet!

Nope, it's just a HTC bug fix update. Still waiting for the Gingerbread 2.3.4. According to first comments I've seen the wifi sensitivity problem has now been fixed!
Try the manual update check, that's what I did. If you don't see any updates yet, you'll just have to wait a bit more until HTC's delivery system reaches your region/phone serial number.
I tried the manual update, but the upgrade is still not available. No matter, I'll wait. Happy about wi-fi! Any news about the Mic sensitivity?

Not yet on my part. I've answered three calls today and there were no mic problems, but I've gotten used to the problem, so I always try to position the phone so that the mic is close to my mouth. I'll try to be less careful in the future
I'm also happy to report that the infamous Dialer process has disappeared from the battery usage list, so that problem has been fixed. Dialer was almost always number 2 right after the display on my list. Now it's completely gone!
Mmm, very strange and too bad here in Italy, or better to me, no upgrade is notified or manually reachable yet! Kind of sure anyway the microphone problem will still be present. I haven't read anything on blogs about this type of improvement by the new firmware....

Still not available. How this is even possible?

Solved the firmware upgrade problem this way (thanks to HTC
customer service):
*#*#682#*#*
No big change about call quality...
At the moment I'm trying this:
after using the number *#*#4636#*#*, changed
network settings from WSCDM preferred to gsm auto prl
But I've just did this and not sure the problem is gone.
Just to let you know, the phone call is still bad.
I'm from Italy, but the phone was bought on Amazon.co.uk.
My phone model number is S710e, android 2.3.3., firmware is
2.30.405.1, radio module is 20.2808.30.085AU_3805.06.03.03_M
I have these problems for the radio module:
My voice is kind of intermittent from the other side of the phone (who listens me)
I can hear echo of my voice
The other side of the phone can hear its own echo
Sometimes connection is lost
Long time for the call to start
I have tried soft reset, updated firmware, set GSM auto (PRL) as network preference, etc.
No solution? I'm thinking of flashing ROM, radio module and whatever... but if the phone is broken, what about warranty loss?
I don't think there's much to do at the moment. Nothing seems to work. All we can do is wait for the 2.3.4 upgrade and hope that it includes also HTC's own firmware tweaks, especially for the abysmal radio module.
I believe they can further adjust the mic/noise cancellation sensitivity and hopefully solve the issue where people on the other end are constantly complaining about disappearing sound.
I'm pretty sure the radio antenna in the back cover is total crap and obviously can't be fixed with software upgrades. A revised back cover with a better antenna would be nice but I doubt it will ever happen, sigh. I'm sick and tired of having to end calls because people are complaining about intolerable echoing on their end. This can happen, if the signal level is even one bar below full.
My friend got Incredible S and he is having the same issue...
Whenever he calls me his volume is too low despite the fact my call volume is full...
He was concerned about it and today I searched for this issue on google and got directed here.
Is this software issue or hardware?
He got 2.3.3 pre installed..
I really don't know if it's a hardware or software problem.
Since I've read someone never experienced the problem,
it could be hardware.
But, many people who sent back the phone to customer
center, after hardware repair, tell to have the problem, still.
So it could be a software problem, caused by HTC SW
radio module. In this sense, it would be nice to know if
those one who had this problem and rooted their phone
to another UI (cyanogenmod, etc.), or changed
the radio module, were able to solve this problem. In this
case it would be definitely a SW problem.
Really, I don't know what to do... I cannot root my phone
because of the warranty, there is no official good SW solution
and I am not sure if the problem is SW.
Why should I stay with a broken phone, but a good smart
device? People, let's think about that.
We should complain with HTC...
Only 2 members with this issue alarms me of hardware issue... U r lucky to have warranty but my friend's mobile has none.. It would be a shock for him of out turns out hardware issue...
I tried rooting his mobile but Alpharevx didn't work for him and I was not willing, to flash european rom...
I guess I have no choice other than to root it and flash a different radio. .
Will try after a couple of weeks when he comes...
That's bad.
Waiting for news about your flashing the device.
For the moment I have to wait, so I will not send back my
phone.
I'm leaving for holidays and I need to use my device as GPS
navigator...

no news, i am facing same problems with the mic even after latest update
On another support forum (http://androidforums.com/htc-incredible-s/374601-call-problem-echo-other-end.html),
other users noticed the same problem and told me this problem is particularly frequent with Vodafone networks and specific numbers.
I experimented the problem too with Vodafone mobile operator and now I'm trying with Wind. Conversations seem to be better, but I'm still in the testing phase.
What about you? Do you have Vodafone too?
Let me know.

Hey ! that sounds much true. Infact my Friend's mobile had this Low volume Prob I mentioned previously but yesterday he called me and the sound was fine from his side. Infact he changed his network 2 weeks back. I guess it has problem with some networks...
It's a HTC thing.
All HTC phones have bad microphones, crappy speakers and use codecs from the '90s.

[Q] HTC One Speakerphone Problem!

Hi guys I'm on my second new HTC One handset since the 19th March and I'm beginning to lose hope! During a call if I use my speakerphone the person on the other end of the line experiences a loud, intermittent, feedback/interference noise. This only happens when I'm on speakerphone. Phones4u who I got the phone off advised me to do a hard reset which I did having no effect. They've replaced the phone with a brand new handset which I've received today but it has the same problem as the first. I've called HTC tech support and the guy basically said to send it back to Phones4u and if the 3rd phone has the same issue to call them back and they'd report it to their seniors. Is there anything I can do? Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
I had a very similar problem with the static type noise when on calls but mine was heard through the normal earpiece not when on loud speaker. On my second device now and still seem to get it now an then but not every call. I'm on 3 in the UK, don't know if it's something to do with the network?

I don't think it's the network, I'm on Orange and have never had an issue like this before, it's as if the phone is picking up signal interference. I've only heard of one other person with the same issue as me.
UPDATE- I have tried a few calls on speakerphone whilst using the supplied headphones and so far haven't had the same interference issue occurring. You guys will maybe have more of an idea as to why using headphones seems to make this problem go away then I do, any ideas? With me being a heavy speakerphone user this whilst not being perfect is a bit of light at the end of the tunnel for me.
