New Nook HD+ BLACKLISTED! - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just snatched brand new sealed nook hd+ from craigslist, and it turns out I can't register it because its blacklisted (what I gathered from web chat with b&N). I tried to call b&N but they are offline...
I probably could still load cm10 on it, but it would be nice to register for warranty first...
anyone had similar experience? some advice?
The guy I got it from looked innocent, and said he has a ipad4 so he does not need the nook (he said it was a gift). Again, the device was still shrink wrapped, so I'm curious how could it have been blacklisted due to the theft, unless it was stolen from a store?
what do you guys think?

Here's the deal. They guy probably bought some shrink wrap and wrapped it up
Then reported it stolen so he could get a new one

It was factory sealed (you cant do it so nicely without the right equipment). Besides, everything is spanking new (even that protective layer they put on the screen was perfect). Also not a single fingerprint on the screen, which I can't archive no matter how nicely I clean up my other nook hd)
I'm going to call b&n tomorrow and try to clear this up. I'm debating whether I should ask the guy for the name of who bought it for him as a gift. I'm unsure, because it might spook him to change simcard or something, and all I have right know is his cell #.
putting cm10 is another option, but I'd rather clear this first.

Good luck with it

I compared it with this unboxing vid

and everything is 100% the same (even the usb nook cable with the same gum tie)

You can get the serial# off the box, no to report it stolen or maybe it was actually stolen new from store and reported to b&n.
Hope everything works out. I def would question the guy and try to get a discount or refund.

As expected the guy went into silent mode. I paid $110 for brand new sealed nook HD+, so I should have suspected.... if it sounds too goog to be true, then it probably is lol.
Anyway, just went ahead and installed CM10 on it. I can't register for warranty purposes, but hopefully I wont need it.
thanks for the input guys

LOL, $110? For that little, I would not care a single bit. If the tablet is fine, looks good, and you have all the accessories, pat your back for getting a good deal.

yeah tablet was brand new sealed, only stolen lol
I fugure the guy just snatched it from somebody's mailbox, and when original owner reported that it did not arrive, they blacklisted the serial number. But yeah, CM10.1 is running very nicely, and I'm very happy with the tablet

Nook Color exchange under warranty...

so this is how it goes... i bought a brand new nook color from craigslist, shrink wrapped and everything... no receipt of course.
ive been using it for a few days now, and ive found a few flaws that are starting to irritate me. Audio is just horrible through the jack, sounds hollow and nothing like my iphone or any other device ive used... casing is loose including bezel and the back, and theres some backlight bleeding.
So my question is how do i go about exchanging this via warranty? i dont think i can just go to the store and exchange it since i have no receipt, or can i?
They will not exchange it in store. Call 1-800-the-book and speak to nc. Customer service. Tell them you bought it in a store and explain all the issues and request an advanced replacement. They will ship you out a new unit and issue a box and return label for your current unit.
Btw what are the first four digits on your serial located on the nook flap?
Good luck.
Sent from my NookColor using Tapatalk
sounds good, thanks
umm, the first 4 digits are "2010" .. im assuming that its not from a B&N store...right?
It is... I bought a 2010 I exchanged 3 2010's at the store because of the same problems... I think it was a bad run of units.
Now my current unit is a 2011 and it has no problems at all
Sent from my HTC HD2 using Tapatalk
basing it on google results, it seems 2010s were pretty bad.
hopefully i get a 2011 on my first exchange
thanks for your help!
Well... I had a 2009 my first nook, and it was great, but I had to get rid of it for a small amount of time due to financial reasons.
Then I bought a new one (2010), and the power button was uber sensitive, and just grazing by it would turn it off. Finally it got to the point that it would just turn off... Meaning no custom roms, as it would continually brick me, by turning itself off in CWR while it was flashing or formatting.
So I called B&N's, and had to deal with 2 representatives that both just wanted to get me off the phone and did not want to send me out a new one... Finally I got the last one too. I received a 2010 again, however I think this one was made much later, as it's heavier and very sturdy... The first 2010 felt like a feather in comparison o.o...
So not all 2010's are bad... But it could just be that B&N's cleaned up their act with the ones they had sitting in their warehouse.

I don't think there have been significant hardware changes that would change the weight. I think you are imagining the weight difference.
Cheers,

if the first four on my nook say 2005 does that mean my nook was manufactured on 2005 ?
You are wrong. My 2011 NC is heavier than the 2010 I exchanged. The manager and I actually compared it in the store.

OK, I am glad you have a sense of humor about this. I am really curious.
BTW my 2004 weighs is at 15.6 Oz ( 443 g).
I didn't take the micro SD out, but it's only a 4 GB card & I don't have much loaded on it, so it shouldn't weigh much.
Cheers,
kev
I'm gonna call them in the morning, I have at least 5 bright green pixels and I have a bright spot on my display. 2010 model here. I will make sure to weigh mine
Update: They're sending an advanced replacement (needed my credit card info, but that's standard) which will hopefully be a 2011 model. I also asked about the upcoming device update, the rep said that everyone who has a nook color should get an email in a couple of days with instructions on how to update their device.

i got an email about my replacement with the serial number of the new one, it starts with 2011
shipped out today too
Thanks
thanks for the info. was dreading calling about my 3 bad pixals and the bright spot that seems to be growing. they are sending out an exchange no problem for my 2010...... but the serial in the email is another 2010. Does anyone know if these are refurbished models?
I also have 2010 with a bright spot too, going to try calling them later to see if I can get a replacement too. Got mine on craigslist and now all I need to do is figure out how to put my rooted color nook back to stock.

Defective Exchanges @ Gamestop

I have to say, that's one of the things I like about having an actual store to go to and deal with customer service face to face.
There's no way for them to put you on hold for 45mins to an hour, there's no waiting for the call or email that never comes, just to call back and find out there is no record of your complaint or call.
So I called my local Gamestop, the same girl that sold me my N7 was on shift. I asked her if she had any in stock for an exchange, she said "no, but let me pull it up in the computer". She tells me of 3 stores that have some in stock and asks if I need their number or address...
Since the next store was like 5 blocks away, I just drove there. They only had 1. I walk in and the sale person says "hey, hum, those aren't supposed to be sold yet, I don't think I can do the exchange until the SD of 8/7" (lol). He calls his manager, she didn't answer. He called another one on his cell, and that one told him, if I have my receipt and product, there was no problem doing the exchange.
He asks me what's wrong with it, I tell him I've randomly had a black line flash 3 times in the last week~. And although I was reluctant to exchange it after reading some of the stories behind other's defective units, as mine's was in top shape. He says yeah but if you can get a new one free, why not right? I said, yeap you're right.
So 5 mins later I walk out with my new exchange.
Now I am afraid to open and inspect it.. Heart's beating fast, I think I am gonna faint.. someone call 911..
Yeah, I really don't want to find out this one's defective.. I really, really enjoy this tablet. :silly:
-CC
P.S. Anyone know if you get the $25 credit again when registering a new unit on the same account?
EDIT: 23,618 units between serial numbers on my two units
OBSERVATIONS: This unit's back is darker than my previous one. The power and volume buttons feel more clicky, plasticy and tend to stick out more especially on the bottom. I am guessing different materials sources.

Why would you get another $25 added to your account? There is/was a loophole where you could, but on new accounts with a different credit card on file I believe. Don't be surprised if Google closed it by now.

So then if I active it on another account it would get the credit, but not on the same one, if I have previously already done so?
I think the loophole you mention is where you could factory reset to get your credit in case you hadn't the first time around, correct? That's not what I'm talking about. I am talking about a new sealed never been registered unit.
I went to my store about a defective exchange, they only had 1 in store and it was on reserve so the guy called around then said he'd email the supplier. When it comes in they'll call me and I can exchange it out.

Just got a chance to sit with it. Initial outlook looks good, set up account, loaded up some apps. Unlocked bootloader, rooted, now applying updates. Sure wrong order, but I'm just getting her done..
Which root method you using? Toolkit v1.5.2? Glad to hear this one's HW is better. Praying mine is legit too! Should be here ~Monday..

Originally yes, on this unit I did it manually, but basically the same exact thing the toolkit does, as it just does it for you via a script.
Honestly though, my first unit was perfect. I am not sure it was attributed to hardware, but more towards software, as it only seemed to be happening while in chrome and it might not have been google's or asus's fault. I didn't want to find out after it was too late to get an exchange.
I hear ya clockcycle.. I too have a love/hate relationship with Android... I typically love the HW and need to fix the SW.. But in the end, I'm always VERY happy...
Follow up on replacement unit. Seems a bit slower to sense/react to rotating and touch requires more pressure, less sensitive.

Funny. I bought my tablet at a GameStop and since then I have been to 5 more stores between Houston and Dallas and the only store that agreed to exchange my N7 didn't because I got to Waxahachie 20 mins after they closed. (My fault obv.)
One store refused to even though they had one in stock claiming only "That's a tablet. We can't do that. You have to contact the manufacturer."

They tried that as an option on me, I told them the manufacturer told me to deal with the place of purchase according to their policy and until that option is exhausted to resort to dealing with Google/ASUS warranty..
Some times some employees take returns personally, just get another rep on the phone or go in the store, FIRM but respectfully..
I ended up having to exchange this replacement as well, but really nothing wrong with the first one, 2nd one they were willing to exchange. 3rd one is just a "perfect" as the 1st and 2nd were... YMMV

It really shouldn't be that different than your old unit. That's strange that touch would require more pressure.
I went back and for a replacement at the store I missed in my earlier post. It was still there a couple o days later.
Now, I'm experiencing a very slight screen lift that I could probably lay ignore, and flicker that is a reliable semi-hourly infuriation.
I think I'm going to have to exchange this for a third unit once the good serials start flowing steady.

Unless the replacement unit was assembled in another plant and or used materials from another source. Happens often. My 3rd unit acts differently as well. It's also less sensitive. It didn't want to apply the updates, once it "did", the about still claimed I was on the original and when I checked for an update would tell me I was up to date. After applying the screen protector, this unit also did not respond to touches at all (as others have reported with their units) but both my previous units were responsive with 1-2 hour(s) of drying. Which leads me to believe touch screen was a different brand from another source, or sensitivity settings are different. Who knows..
-CC
P.S. It's ok, it works..
You are making me all nervous now, I hope mine is the right amount sensitive when it shows up tomorrow(hopefully). I didn't know they used different materials on a line of devices. Interesting.

Just got a refurbished HTC One. Everything is great but...

I just noticed I can see PM up on the top right side of the screen and some notifications in the top left corner during full screen apps, especially with a full grey screen. I didn't see those a couple hours ago when I got it.
Did I seriously just burn in my screen already? Is this normal for a "new" One? Or should I be freaking out?
I did nothing out of the ordinary since I got it. Just rooted it, restored apps, put it on the charger for a bit. That's all.
I see 127 views and no replies. No one wants to touch this one lol! I'm taking it back to Sprint in the morning. I shouldn't be getting burn in less than 24 hours into using any phone, refurbished or not.

Yea,i agree, take it back and make them replace it,it should last longer than 24 hours, wether you flash it or not,im upgrading to this from the EVO 4G,in 2 months, but it will be a new one, hahaha,i just cant wait,so i can start to dev for the One now and maybe port over my 4 kornerz rom.
I would take it back as well.
Also, pay attention to the screen. In my One, the speakers busted (same as my OG Evo, Evo 3D and Hero. Htc makes ****ty speakers) I also have a dead pixel so I filed an insurance claim. Today I received the new One and the display is garbage. The whites look dingy and yellow like a cheaper version. It doesn't compare at all to my current One.
I'm gonna send it back and try my luck again =\

Nope. You're lucky then because HTC speakers are cheap and it isn't just me who says so. Here is a quick google search but you can dig deeper and see for yourself. I never really cared because replacing the speaker was easy...but with the HTC One it is a repair nightmare.

I'll halfway attempt to break it down, but I doubt you'll understand.
There are people who break down how difficult it would be for the average consumer to do things such as repairs for these phones (hint:ifixit). The average consumer isn't gonna own all the tools/equipment or possess the knowledge/skill as a professional. This is true in probably everything you'll ever get repaired, otherwise mechanics have been ripping people off for years.
This phone scores as low as possible when it comes to repairs. It doesn't mean that professionals can't repair it. Ifixit isn't gonna breakdown how easy it is for HTC or other phone repair people, why the *@*! would anyone care about that? They are breaking it down for the not so skilled.

I got my phone replaced once already as well, but Sprint said they DO NOT use refurbished phones as replacements until the phone has been released for 6 months.
But what was odd is that my replacement phone didn't come with a box, so I dialed ##786# and checked the "reconditioned status" which stated "none." I wonder if this replacement is not a refurb, then why did it come with no box?

Sprint doesn't handle it, Asurion does. They'll tell you it could be new or refurbished. It all depends on what they have. Both of mine came with a box, but that doesn't mean they're new.
I'm about to send ny second replacement back. The screen is just too yellow and dingy looking. It's a damn shame I have to file an insurance claim and pay a deductible on a month old phone.

To update, my 2nd refurb seemed nice enough. But after having it a couple days, I've noticed the screen colors are pretty blown out and definitely not like it should be. Colors are as funky as they can be, and the screen itself is way too bright. And for insult to injury, the phone is unable to connect to 4G LTE. So back to Sprint I go!

ouch my nexus7 it slid off my bed apparently. I didnt see how it fell, it was in a case but it didnt save it. I heard the thud, turned and feared the worse. it goes across the screen so its rather large.
its the 2012 32 gb version. Is it fixable??? most of the screen doesnt work, i can touch the notification area and it responds, but no where else, so it is basically inoperable. I google some stuff about replacing the digitizer or the screen? or both? how would i know what I need?
on another note, its the 2012 version and i could probably use an upgrade on the 2014 or whatever the new one is. But i definitely would like to repair this and get a new one. I hate having to let go of stuff like this and would like to repair it.
Check out on ebay you have to change the glass, digitizer and lcd (too risky to change the glass+digitizer) its fairly easy. You can check outr some teardown on google too and youtube. Good luck

My wife's n7 had a similar problem, but it's one of my children that stepped on it lol, it was going to cost £160 for Asus to fix it and the tablet only cost £200 brand new at the time so I just got some insurance on it from currys for £3 a month then got them to fix it lol

hmm thats a nice idea, i might find something like that locally here. well I ended up going on craigslist and looking at local ads of nexus 7, and I saw someone selling a nexus 7 16gb for $100. I emailed and asked if it was still available and how firm they were. They replied saying they can let it go for 80 if I come right now. I just returned about an hour ago with a 16gb nexus 7. I am currently in the process of rooting with a rom as my 32gb was. I still wanna fix my 32gb so I will try this idea or something similar.
Take the screen of the 16gb one and put it on the 32

Check out square trade for a warranty as well. I've heard good things about them
So this would work with square trade? The idea of getting insurance on my nexus even though it is already broken?
Yeah if they don't ask to see it your fine
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
So I wouldn't have to show a receipt or anything? I'll definitely look into it!
I didn't with currys mate but that was because it was less than a year old

ouch my nexus7 it slid off my bed apparently.
I hate having to let go of stuff like this and would like to repair it.

hello this is a look at the French site and I've already ordered parts for my Nexus 7 is a reliable and serious site

No wonder why ins. premiums skyrocket...it's because people do this kind of stuff. This is ins. fraud...plain, simple, cut, & dried. I also believe this is against the TOS of this site. Do it the right way and purchase ins. before something happens to your device

How is it fraud, I asked currys if they needed to see the tablet and they no because it was less than a year old they didn't ask if it had a broken screen and I've still got the insurance so there getting there money back anyway so think before accusing people of fraud

Its fraud because it was suggested above that insurance gets placed on the device AFTER there has been damage to the device. It was suggested that the insurance company wouldn't verify the condition...it's exactly what it sounds like...fraud.

Motorola Questions

How is the RMA process for Motorola? Is it pretty much hassle free like Google Play?
I'm also wondering this. I have to RMA mine due to an issue with a spot on my camera.

I just called Motorola, 5minjtes later they said they are overnighting me a new phone with a return label no problem! I'm glad they have good customer service for issues like I had.
Other than having to wait for their stock to replenish, I've had no issues with the RMA process for my N6: quick and easy.

I was lucky because they had a blue 64gb in stock ready to ship. They asked what color I wanted and I said I don't care as long as its a 64gb. They said OK they only have blue so they sent me that one. I have a blue one now so that's fine, but I think it's funny how they would have happily sent me a white one if it was in stock.

Booo! I wasn't offered that option. "You have a blue, you're getting a blue." Lucky you, indeed.

I know people I don't care honestly as long as its 64gb. I love my Nexus
For those who've received a RMA phone (any motorola phone) do you have to pay money, and did you received a refurbished device?

I didn't have to pay anything they send you a label so you can send the old one back. I don't know if its new or not because I get mine tomorrow via FedEx,however I would assume it's refurbished unless they don't have any refurbished ones yet then it will likely be new. Either way not worried because they sent it out fast, free, and it was easy to get replaced. I also have moto care should I actually break my phone accidentally which seems to be a good idea considering it's size. I'll report back tomorrow when my phone arrives, hopefully in the morning because you need to sign for it in person.
Mine was brand new.
They sent me a brand new phone sealed in the box
is it standard practice to put a hold on your credit card?

yes, how else can they make the money back if you do not return the broken device? For all they know you are faking it to get them to send you a 2nd phone so you can sell them both for profit.

They didn't put a hold on my CC, I double checked.
I just RMA'd my second N6 because of 1/2 the screen freezing randomly and the camera jumping... I love my Nexus I just hope this one works better. They are sending me a CW model because the MD is out of stock in the center and because its the same person I spoke with before who offered it. I hope this one doesn't have any issues because I don't want any other phone except for my Nexus 6

I had to pay $175, but that is because I broke my own screen...
As for the device, it was brand new, but I wouldn't expect that to last long as they start refurbing the returns.
