[Q] HTC One Wifi connects, no internet, troubleshooting help - Sprint HTC One (M7)

Hey guys. I am having a crazy problem. It all started about 4 weeks ago my phone started having authentication issues with my xfinity Router/Wifi unit (Arris TC862)... I figured at the time it was having problems with the encryption so I changed it from WPA/WPA2-PSK (AES/TKIP) to WPA2-PSK (TKIP).
That worked and it allowed to phone to connect to the wifi... But now I cannot contact the internet from the phone... I know it isn't the wifi module itself because it works fine on every other wifi that I try it on, subway and my work.
I am using ViperRom One so I have the terminal emulator... I am able to ping my default gateway of 192.168.1.1 which is the same router that I connect to via wifi, I am able to ping from my computer to my phone... So it appears that I am on the local LAN
I cannot ping google via name or by ip address so that rules out a DNS issue
I tried using a static ip address as well... 192.168.1.50 which I am sure my dhcp hasn't handed out
No other wireless device in the house has this problem
I guess what I am looking for is help if you know what the problem may be, but more specifically troubleshooting that I can do on the phone I am a network engineer but I know little about linux, and what the capabilities of the virtual terminal are... If I was at work I would just span (mirror) my cisco port and then hook up wireshark to see what is happening to the packets but I don't think this router is that sophisticated.
I would lean towards this being a comcast issue but the fact that this all started off with the authentication issue makes me think that it is a problem with the phone...
One thing of note, the router itself recognizes all my other devices as being android or a kindle but for my phone it says "UNKNOWN" which is basically just the common name, it recognizes the MAC and that is all that should matter... is there a way to change your hostname on the phone? I noticed there is no Ifconfig command in the terminal but I am not sure if that is where you would change that anyhow.

If anyone else gets this problem log in to your xfinity router; Under Parental Control - Turn off Managed Services - I do not know why this was blocking my phone but it definitely was

Thank you, thank you! Comcast idiots. Who would think that by default they wouldn't allow devices to connect? The weird thing is my HTC One worked for about three weeks on wifi and then magically didn't. Whatever, now fixed. thanks.

Wireless Wierdness

Help!
I have a Netgear DG834T router as provided by Sky. I have one wired and two wireless connections running into it (let's call them WD, WL1 and WL2 respectively).
On the connections page I can see all of them under "attached devices"...but now I want to connect using my Kaiser (actually an O2 XDA Stellar)
What happens...
On the Kaiser, I get an IP address (assigned by DHCP) as normal - but can't access the internet - or at least, can only access it very rarely - http://www.google.com can't be found, but http://www.bbc.co.uk can. No idea why.
On the router, under "attached devices", not only can I NOT see the Kaiser, but WL1 and WL2 also disappear. WD remains visible. The router cannot ping the IP address of the Kaiser (timed out). If I disable WiFi on the Kaiser, then WL1 and WL2 are immediately visible again. Internet connection on WL1 and WL2 works, even when they are not visible.
I HAVE connected to this network before without any problems.
What the hooting heck is going on, and how do I fix it?

Time to troubleshoot! What happens with this phone on another wireless network. We need to determine if it's the phone or the network. Do you have any friends with a phone like this? Can you use their phone on your network? Do you have any ROMs flashed, has this phone ever been on the network without problems?
If the phone works on another router try looking for firmware updates for the router. Those things really do need to be updated often and it could have something to do with that.
Only have access to one network :-(. Might be a couple of weeks before I can access a hotel one or something like that.
Think next door neighbour has similar phone, but different provider...will try if he'll let me!
No ROMS flashed.
It connected fine when I first had it. As far as I know, I've changed nothing since then.
2 out of 4 answered...with an option on three...I'll get back to you as soon as I've beaten up my neighbour and stolen his phone...

Neighbour's phone on my network gives the exact same problem. I've also noticed that when I click "Renew IP" on the Kaiser it doesn't work...it gives me 0.0.0.0, but will occasionally flash up the correct IP address. It's alomst as if the connection is being lost and remade every few seconds. The status ist gives me is "associated to network"...is that different to "connected"?
I've been trying to solve this on my router, but none of the settings seem to make any difference.

I get the same with the router from sky.
Kaiser says I have an IP address, 192.168.0.5, but the it doesn't show up on the attached devices on the router.
What I find that works is hit renew IP maybe twice until you get a really wierd IP address like
169.254.*.**, actually not sure if I'm picking up another network, but for some reason I don't think I am.
I can then browse the web and sync via wifi.
Really pisses me of that it says that it has an IP address but doesn't connect.
1) Make sure you dont have a proxy set up on your wifi connection on your device.
2) The 169. address is your device getting an unauthorised IP address as the router did not receive the correct encryption key from the device.
3) You can check if its an encryption thing by simply logging in to the router (192.168.0.1 in your web browser on pc) and changing the settings to turn wpa off and testing it. The routers username and password are on the card - its something like "sky" and "admin"

with my router.....i have to set the wifi power mode on my kaiser to "best performance", any other setting and i get that "associated to network" ****. been this way every since the hermes and the wizard.

No, proxy set-up as the device was bought unbranded in US.
Because there are issues with this router, encryption and media streaming devices, I have only restricted the mac addresses with no encryption.
Still don't know about the 169. ip address beacuse doesn't seem to come up as am ISP.
Now then, how wierd is this?
After all these issues and kind of giving up on it as a bad job, I also noticed that out on the road, my GPRS wasn't working either - TomTom couldn't connect to the "plus" traffic service.
I get on the phone to O2 who told me that my phone hadn't been "provisioned". After one false start where they didn't seem to do anything about it, I have just (literally) had them tell me to go to the O2 Operator settings and tell it to update the "O2 UK Post Pay_GPRS" and reboot.
GPRS now works. And magically, so does my WiFi - IP address negotiated and full access to internet and my router's setup page granted. Working like a charm again.
So - seems to me it's an account setting, and nothing to do with either me poor ol' router or me nice new phone.
For completeness, I was occasionally getting the 169 IP address too, so it sounds like we have EXACTLY the same problem - suggest you get onto your service provider ASAP.

gprs connection failed

It worked yesterday but now won't. If I enter proxy settings into orangeinternet acp the same as orangewap then it works for http traffic but not email.
I have done a lot of setting up on the phone since it arrived yesterday but I can't think what I can have altered in the gprs settings.
I had the same issue with my Touch Cruise on the newer ROMs and it went away when I reverted to the official HTC Cruise 6.1 ROM.
Any ideas anyone?

I tried that several times - it doesn't work. I think it must be a screwed setting from setting up something like exchange server in activesync.
Everything works under wifi.
I am really hoping I don't have to do a hard reset and start all over again.
Try putting a different operator's sim in and let it set everything up for it, then put your orange sim back in and go through the auto setup again. If that doesn't work then a hardreset might be your only option. Going from your other posts in the themes, applications and software it looks like your phone is really playing up so a hardreset might be best all round, only install one thing at a time and test everything after every install and customisation until you find out what you're doing to break it, then don't do that step again.
Have you messed around at all under the network advanced options where you set things like HSDPA etc

The thing that breaks it seems to be when I change the wifi settings. I have a non-standard wireless network at home and I have to specifiy the IP address and default gateway in the "network adaptors" settings for wifi. Once I access the network with these settings it breaks the cellular data connection!
Like I said earlier, my Cruise did this as well with the later ROM such as Udk's and C_Shekhar's. When I went back to the official HTC 6.1 ROM everything worked fine.
I have now reverted my wireless settings to standard (i.e. DHCP) and it has restored the cellular connection but, obviously the wifi doesn't work.
If I can't sort this I'll have to rethink my home network.
Sounds like you're using set IP addresses on your home network for port forwarding or something of that nature. Have another look in your router's settings as most decent ones will allow you to reserve IPs from the DHCP range for specific MAC addresses, that way when the computers or other devices ask for an IP they get given the same one every time. Things really do work much more smoothly as far as networking goes when DHCP is working. If you really do need to specify IP addresses manually then just let the router hand out addresses by DCHP from a restricted range, e.g. if you manually specify addresses from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.10 then set the start address for DHCP to 192.168.1.11.
Thanks, shuflie. It's actually to do with the default gateway. I have an orange livebox doing the adsl work so I can plug a telephone in to it to get free calls. However, the wireless is useless on the livebox so I have a netgear wireless router on the network as well. The trouble is, DHCP won't work that way so I have to set each wireless device up with a dedicated IP address and direct it to the livebox as the gateway.
For some unknown reason, this breaks cellular data on winmo devices.
Anyway, until I find a solution I have removed the orange livebox from my system. I'll just have to live without the broadband phonecalls which is no big deal tbh.
I actually run a non standard network here too, a SKY ADSL router to provide the broadband access and a Netgear router which all my computers attach to. Both router are set up as DCHP servers, but the SKY box only gives out an address to the Netgear router, the Netgear hands out the IP addresses for everything else. The only drawback I've seen so far is that it seems impossible to initiate a connection from the outside world to any of the computers on my network because of the dual NAT that is happening, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing as it makes it harder to hack in from outside. I don't have to point the computer and other devices to the SKY box as the gateway, I just let the Netgear router think that the connection it is getting from the SKY box is a direct connection to the outside world. Everything seems to work just fine, no problems with network gaming on the playstation network and torrents, skype, web etc. seem to work just fine. If you can't live without the broadband calls you could give it a go.
Should have said that the SKY and Netgear routers are on different subnets, 192.168.0.x for the SKY and 192.168.1.x for the netgear.

Can't connect my N1 with Linksys router

My N1 can connect easily to all kind of wifi routers and modems without problem but not with my fitness club's one, they have a Linksys N160.
My N1 can detect the signal,enter the password but then it's stucked with the message ''getting ip...''
Where is the problem? is it a know hardware or software compatibility stuff?
Sometimes rebooting the wifi router helps. Also make sure that when the guy over at your fitness club reboots the router you don't have the wifi of the club saved. delete the saved wifi profile, reboot the wifi router and then try. Cheers.
Already tried it several times. I saw that OS4 of iphone/ipod have the same problem with router enabling Wireless-N, I will ask him to limit the router to B/G
I also had similar problem with Linksys WAG54G2 (at latest firmware). Then I changed to much cheaper adsl router, TP-LINK WD-W8960N and no more connection problem.

I had problems using my Nexus One on my SMC Barricade 802.11b/g/n router when 802.11n was enabled. Turned it off; problems were gone. I don't think that works well yet, though some people have said otherwise. Could be a router-specific issue.
Ok so it's a WAG160N to be specific.
He tried to use mixed B/G instead of mixed (which would imply N too) but it still stuck at getting ip...
I told him to throw this router in the garbage because anyway SE and HP mobiles can't connect too,but he said he would do it but his boss will never accept to pay a penny more
My parents had a router that did exactly the same, my phone got stuck on Obtaining IP, whilst the missus 5800 connected and broswed just fine.
It was a crappy old thing and they replaced it the other week, now I can connect and browse just fine.
I also use a linksys WAG160N.
bought a nexus one, could not for the life of me get an internet connection.
turns out dns on router is poofed, so i just set DNS from my isp manually on the nexus one together with a static ip and booya interent at full 802.11n speeds.
sometimes its the simple things.
This sounds similar to when I set my router to channel 13 or whatever the max was on it. My N1 would only sometimes get a connection, but would eventually drop it and stay off. Solved it by selecting a lower channel (WifiAnalyzer suggesten channel 1 as the best alternative to channel max) on the AP.
I can see that in CM6 nightly that I have since started using I can choose regulatory domain, and thereby open up channels previously blocked. If you can't change anything on the AP this might help you solve the problem on your end.
So suggestions if none of the posts above me provide a solution is to run WifiAnalyzer and see how the channel-graph looks.

Chromecast will not connect to my TELUS ROUTER

Chromecast wont connect to my telus router (Actiontec V1000H). I can't see any option to enable/disable AP Isolation. Is there any solution for this?

Good advice.
Remember that the WiFi bands (channels) are not exactly the same between countries. So if you're in a non-US country and your router happens to choose a channel that is not available in the US, Chromecast may not detect your wireless AP.
But Telus is Canadian, and Canada has the same WiFi channels as the U.S. (Canada and the U.S. necessarily share identical radio spectrum allocation).

Didn't know that. Thanks! Still applies to other countries though. I think Channel 13 is one of the channels that applies to Europe but not US. I should put it in the FAQ...

I get a message saying it couldn't connect, and when I click the link in the message it brings me to a page that mentions AP filtering, UPNP enabling and .NET 3.5. I checked and UPNP is enabled, and I can't find an option for AP filtering (I have the Actiontech V1000h). I am using a Macbook pro.

In some cases you have to go through a couple of times. I just reset my Chromecast to test a few things and had to go through the setup twice before it connected to my WiFi.
Chromecast in Canada, on Telus
A friend lent me his chromecast. He uses an iphone and Shaw cable. I use a Nexus 4, and have Telus as my internet provider.
It was a bear trying to get chromecast to work. Tried 5 separate days. Got it to work and i could watch netflix/youtube on it about 3 times and played with it for a couple of hours each. That's the success.
The fail is that I had to trouble shoot more then 4+ hours to get it to work those 3 times. Reboot the chromecast. Reboot the router. Reboot my Nexus 4. Try my wife's Nexus 4. Try the Nexus 7 tablet. It was a horrible experience. I got the AP recommendation like the earlier post in this thread. I tried that. Tried calling telus and signed into my router to check that those settings were correct. As far as I understand it's a gateway 11n wireless router.
So my conclusion is change my internet provider to Shaw unless someone has a smart solution to this problem. The router says it's a 50ghz signal? So it isn't the 2.4vs 5.0 ghz signal problem that I've googled and read about.
Please provide some brains to my situation. I've used all of mine up.

So I took the plunge and bought one. Maybe it'd be different than my friends. Looks like this is a me problem. The chromecast still doesn't work. I thought it might be the tv that it's plugged into? Maybe shielding the chromecast from the wifi? I don't know. Will trouble shoot with a different tv or a long hdmi cable that will get the chromecast out from behind the tv. Maybe that'll help.

TVs are great at blocking/scrambling radio signals.
Use the included HDMI extender. If that doesn't help (enough), get an HDMI extension and move Chromecast away from the TV. One of mine is on a 10-foot HDMI extension. The other is connected upstream of a another device that connects to my TV, so both of my Chromecasts are at least a foot away from its associated TV.

It could be a few things not related to the router directly but related in how the Router connects to your ISP.
So a couple of questions...
What kind of service is your ISP? (DSL, CABLE, OTHER)
What Public IP does your router report? (Usually found on the status page that shows connection data) If it starts off 192.168 then your Modem is doing a double nat translation and you need to call your ISP and tell them you want the Modem to be put into gateway mode and just pass a public IP to your router.
Does the CCast actually connect to the Router but not work or will it not connect at all period? If it doesn't connect at all it is possible you need to change the Security method used to WPA or WEP. To test shut off security alltogether and try to connect the CCast. If there is currently NO security try putting WPA on and trying again (but it should work on an open AP)

Solution: I changed the security settings. It still tries to stop the CCast from talking to my phone once in a while, but I just log into my router and log into the firewall settings. The firewall settings are "high, medium, low, NAT". It started working once I started turning it off of NAT and onto Medium or High.
I don't know why this is the solution, but it is a solution. I suspect that either Telus will fix the prolbem for everyone else or this thread will become popular. Now CCast is coming to Canada. So either Telus fixes it or there'll be a lot of searching leading to this post.
As a reminder, a friend of mine on telus never toughed his firewall settings and never had a problem with using his CCast. Go figure.

Well if the Telus was set to NAT perhaps Double Nat Translation was the issue.
DO you have another router connected to your modem or is this one of those all in one Hybrids supplied by the ISP?

I have a friend that is struggling with this as well. While setting up the WiFi connection between the chromecast and the router (the Actiontec V1000H - which is a modem/router combo if that helps). The chromecast will see the WiFi, but it seems to time out while trying to connect to the router.
I did find a comment on a blog somewhere (sorry, I forget where) that suggests unchecking the "IGMP snooping enabled" option in the router (Advanced Settings>IGMP Setting). Once this was done, the chromecast connected to the WiFi without any issues and we were able to stream it without any issues.
However after going out for dinner we had major issues trying to connect to the WiFi on our phones and his laptop (laptop would try to connect to the WiFi but continually fail). It seems like this is a temporary fix at best.
The only permanent solution I can think of at the moment is to go buy a new router that is listed as having no issues on the chromecast compatibility list... Which kind of defeats the whole purpose of having the chromecast as an economic way to stream content to your big screen.

I don't see why IGMP should have any affect on being able to login and connect.
I Can see it being a problem with streaming but not connection.
IS this an ISP provided Modem/Router? How many devices are connecting wirelessly?
Check settings for IGMP Proxy, Try changing that setting whatever it is but it should probably be disabled (Still don't think this would affect connection but it's worth checking)
Check if UPnP Is enabled (again not really connection related but it does need to be enabled for CCast)
I personally prefer to use a two device setup with separate Modem (in Bridge Mode) and Router....This way the Modem protects the router from the outside world and even if the Modem goes bad the Network still functions properly.
And I pretty much stay away from anything that isn't a Linksys or Netgear product as far as Routers are concerned.
There are a bunch of Actiontec models that are listed as incompatible with CCast on the google site so it's obvious that something about their firmware is not CCast friendly.
So the the previous poster may actually have made a good suggestion in the long run! LOL
I'm using the telus actiontech router with chromcast with no issues....
its a pretty crappy router though and it seems telus disabled the ability for bridge mode in the latest firmware... has anyone found a solution to this so i can buy a better router?

As long as double NAT doesn't cause you problems, you can
Assign the new router's WAN port to an address in the ISP router's LAN range
Set the new router's gateway to the ISP router's LAN address
Connect the two routers LAN port to LAN port
Have all your wired and wireless clients connect to the new router.

Wifi Issue with Nexus 6

I have been doing research on this and it turns out that the Nexus 6 had issues with corporate wifi on 5.0. Corporate wifi is just wifi that requires a username and password to access if you do not know and this is the kind of wifi my college uses. Well hoping this problem would be fixed with 5.1 update I got the update and am still having the same issue it verifies the network but only says saved never connects however many tries it does its just a huge loop and this is getting very annoying. I dont know if there is something I should try to resolve this problem or will just have to stick it out until google addresses it. If anyone knows more about this issue please inform me because I have reached a wall with my research on this issue.
Yeah, ever since I updated to 5.1 I haven't been able to connect either, and I try through the Xpress Connect app like and it never works. I had been able to connect normally when I was on 5.0.1 before.

Well hoping this problem would be fixed with 5.1 update I got the update and am still having the same issue it verifies the network but only says saved never connects however many tries it does its just a huge loop and this is getting very annoying. I dont know if there is something I should try to resolve this problem or will just have to stick it out until google addresses it. If anyone knows more about this issue please inform me because I have reached a wall with my research on this issue.

Hm, my cable company offers local WiFi and I've been able to connect to their userid/password-required routers, then use their network. Did this just a couple days ago when signal in a particular store was really hampered.
Maybe it depends on the particular router and/or configuration they use?

Try installing the hydra kernel.
I use it along with meanpop and have no problems connecting to LEAP

By username and password I meant one that the company or school gives you individually its not the kind of regular router login because at home I connect no issues but its the school wifi they even checked my account to make sure I wasnt blocked out of it and I was not. My fault for not being specific in the original post.
In my case N6 was able to connect to one password protected SSID without an issue, the subnet associated with this SSID is dedicated to provide internet access only.
The SSID N6 was having problem to authenticate with, was another SSID, whose subnet is bridged to provide access to both internet, and to corporate network.
According to Dell support, the Sonicwall router was failing to authenticate a connection coming through a bridged interface. I guess, N6 and/or Android 5.1 implements something new vis-a-vis authentication, that an older SonicWall firmware was not designed to deal with.
Immediately after SonicWall firmware update the problem was resolved.
Just wanted to chime in on this one... We have a corporate Wi-Fi as you describe (each user has a separate logon to the network) and I've not had any problems with Lollipop, 5.0 or 5.1. Not very helpful for you, but at least now you know it can work...
