Help with Smart Dock - Galaxy Note II Accessories

i was using the Smart Dock, for about 6 months, and it was running perfect, i saw movies, and play games (emus, and android games) using a ps3 controller wired, on the Dock´s USB, and every time work perfectly.
But suddenly, it stop working, now its dificult to connect, i connect it, and in the phone screen appears the "HDMI cable connected", but after a few seconds appears "HDMI cable disconnected", and then, the message appears one after one,
and when it work, the screen mirroring runs well, but when i connect a mouse (wired) dont work, neither the ps3 controller or a pendrive, the USB Host of the Dock is not working,
I try using a USB OTG, and connect both mouse and ps3 controller, and both work well, but not in the Dock
anny suggestions?
Sorry for the long post

You probably are, but just in case, I'll ask anyway..... Are you using a powerful enough charger (1.8-2.0 maH output) .... e.g-the one that came with the note 2? And are the cables snugly snapped into place and not loosely connected?

I have this problem too!! none of the USB ports are functioning, however USB accessories all work with my Note 2 via OTG cable (I tried connecting the OTG cable to the Smart Dock too and this didn't work either)

I have exactly the same problem with all 3 USB ports. HDMI works fine. Is there any special setting or my dock is faulty?

I think they must be faulty, either the unit itself or possibly the charger, or the charger for some reason is not strong enough to power the USB ports (although that seems strange as everything is official Samsung product, and I've tried using my phone power adapter too which ostensibly is the same)

Yes the charger in the dock is 100% the same with the one in the phone packaging. I tried to power the dock through my laptop without any success. Unfortunately, there is not powered problem.

[Q] And USB adapters for the DS7 yet? So we can hook up controllers etc.

Just wondering, since some of the newer tablets let you hook up mini usb devices to it and so. Was wondering if there had been any adapters yet or so for us streak 7 users? Would be cool to get a wired controller hooked up and so.
You would need an OTG cable to do that, as dell doesnt make any you will have to make your own or use the HDMI dock.
Well I have the HDMI Dock, so I could use the dock then insert the usb device to that? Was thinking about getting that Logitech F710 with that usb dongle, heard it had support for android. What else would I need? Or hows that work fully.
As for the non dock part, has anyone made a cable yet to work?
if your device had a usb-a connector you have no choice then but to make a cable.
the sixaxis/ds3 uses a mini usb connector and might work though usb,
I know it and the wiimote will work over bt, with the wiimote being the easier to pair one.
Well I have the wiimote working fine, Issue there is.. Yea.. Battery drain on that remote. So figured maybe getting a adapter. I guess I need a USB to Mini micro usb? (The new style mini usb thing.. man I miss the old big RAZR size ones) How many of you have used a HID device or so on android or the streak 7?
you'd need to splice together the dock connector to preferably a USB-A female port, it'd be the most useful as you'd have a cable that could accept anything, but it'd mean you'd always need a minimum of 2 cables.
You'd also have to dissemble to dock connector itself i believe as the OTG pins are different from what's wired in the normal sync/charge cables, you cant simply cut the cable and rewire it, you'd prob have to cut the dock connector open and resolder
If you made a dock to micro usb connector it'd only accept devices that have a micro usb port on it.
Keep in mind usb mode means that the controller would be drawing power from the device itself, while controllers dont draw that much, it's still something to point out
Wouldnt this be all I need?
http://www.amazon.com/USB-Female-Mini-Male-Adapter/dp/B0016RNX2I/ref=pd_sbs_e_4
Would take the normal size usb dongle or cord, fits into the USB slot of the dock itself.
I havnt actually tried it but it sounds like that should work, i know that port is designed for otg connections so i'd assume it'd take care of the hard work.
When on 2.2.2 Did I need a special program for this to work? I know 3.x had native support. Just wondering. =) (Or can any game/emulator with key remapping auto detect)
if it's anything like the hoops needed for the s5 on 2.2.x yes, unless dell included their own code stuff to make it work, then i'm not sure.
I've never attached a controller to anything, wired or not so I can only say that much
Wonder what the app would be called or so, anyone know? I mean I ordered the part, should be here in a few days, then I can report any tests I have with a Rumblepad 2.
Ok tested it out, So far nada. Dont know if its even supposed to work.
Has anyone here hooked a wired controller up to their android? Running Honeycomb now too.
I know people talk about the F710, which I wonder if that works cause its battery powered?
So what's the verdict guys? Can a controller or other USB device be connected to the mini USB port on the docking station and work? If not, will it work if you plug in a mini USB OTG cable (like this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-USB-Re...757?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a6edf5335) into the docking station and then plug the controller into the OTG cable?
So far my verdict is nada.. dont think its supplying power to the usb ports. Now its been said that adapter based ones may work, something where controller is powered by batteries. Tho again. No one ever gives a real confirm.
My next area to branch out is http://www.onlive.com/controller 50$ but you can use a adapter for the pc. However it also works with bluetooth, something that the tablet DOES support and no adapter needed. Since I have the onlive app, least it will work 100% for THAT. Once my tax money comes in, Ill order the controller and see if it can work on emulators and so too. least then we will have 1 solid answer that has some good use. (Since honestly, onlive on the tablet really isnt bad at all!)
Why not bluetooth your ps3 controller though the sixaxis app on the market thats what I've done works great

I have used my Wii remote that way

To answer both. If I am not mistaken. PS3 controllers have to be "paired". Which means when you wanna play PS3 or Tablet.. got to re-pair them all the time, correct?
Wii-Motes I know you dont have to re-pair them. However.. one thing I hate... that to use the classic controller.. you need to have the Wiimote laying around somewhere.. then the cable for classic. Seems bulky for normal use.
Both controllers all are battery too. Would be nice for wired solutions. If I do anything wireless, I may as well get that Onlive controller with BT support.
If you have a sixaxis/DS3 dedicated to non-ps3 use: you only have to re-pair it every time you want to use it on a different device.
The sixaxis/ds3 do work in usb mode, at least on pcs. I dont recall if there's a solution to use it in usb mode on android (though i'd imagine it should, as usb mode is trivial to enable)
If you only have a single device to use it with, you only ever need to pair it once and then you're done.
Well, I finally went and tried hooking up a usb hub to my S7, and my results were absolute failures.
I bought an OTG <-> dell 30 pin a while back and a standard OTG <-> dock cable.
I dont have a baseline as I dont know offhand which kernels are specifically tested to work.
It seems to enable the hub (by enable I mean it powers up on detection of a host, it's wall powered)
on my S5 with ICS/Phoenix kernal (which is known to support usb hosting), but nada on my S7 with ICS B4/mod and stock 514.
Can anyone explicitly confirm that the b4 and stock kernals work with host?
I'm pretty sure nothing is happening on either of those, and as it works fine on my S7 it's definitely not bad cables/hardware.
Edit: at least the S5 is even capable of powering the hub itself, and with a dock it can charge at the same time. If it wernt for the terrible HDMI out on it, it would be a full on android pc with the dock.
The S7 on the other hand: I still cant get anything, remotely powered or self powered: it gives no response
I can tell you, yes, ICS kernel does have otg drivers but may not provide power to those devices.

Split the micro USB for charging and USB OTG

Hello,
I want to do some stuff at the same time with my phone.
Watching a movie from an usb stick while charging the phone.
So, I've bought this HDMI converter
When you plug this into the phone you can plug in your charger or USB OTG adapter in the usb port on the HDMI converter.
But i can't find any splitter cable on the internet or ebay so i can charge my phone and connect my usb stick at the same time.
I wonder if this is even possible. It is possible to charge the phone when HDMI converter is connected and it is also possible to connect my USB stick to the HDMI converter.
Anyone ever tried this or has found a simple micro usb splitter cable or normal usb splitter cable?
You can't connect a normal USB Hub because i can't send power back to my phone through the hub.
Thanks :good:
Sorry I can't help with your splitter request.
However I'd be really interested in knowing if those two items work fine with the Note 2?

so the i know it isnt possible with the 5 pin mhl adapter (the old one thats not compatible with this phone)
I wonder if the 11pn version does allow this. I know the cables dont exist for what you are looking to do, there is a galaxy note smart dock 2 that seems to allow hdmi and 3 usb ports, if they allow it at the same time then it would be at least possible.
it must be. did you try the smart dock?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953061&page=2
I've ordered one and i will see how it will perform. smart dock is nice but pricey i'd like one for home and work!
Bought this one http://goo.gl/6OiGx and as it is listed compatible with the NOte 2 and the Galaxy S3 i was hoping it would work with the Note 2 as well - nope: only power OR OTG, not both.

Old thread... at least on my GS3 I have found that the ability to charge and use USB OTG at the same time is kernal specific. Anyone ever find one that works on Note 2?

Samsung Smart Dock HDMI not working. ARGH!

Hi all,
I know there have been other postings regarding this, but none have helped me solve my situation:
I have a "stock ROM" AT&T Note 2, and have tried two different Smart Dock units from Fry's. I get NO usable HDMI signal from either when connecting to my ASUS V228H monitor; the HDMI cable/monitor have been checked as working by connecting my DVD recorder up and successfully playing video content. USB connections to a wired keyboard and mouse worked well on unit #1, for some reason not on unit #2. There was no improvement when I rebooted the phone into safe mode. Lastly, the phone is correctly recognized by a PC when connecting via USB (MTP mode).
I'm ready to scrap the whole Smart Dock idea and instead buy an MHL-to-HDMI adapter and bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo, which I think can be found with total price just around that of the Smart Dock... unfortunately, I guess there's no "splitter" that could let me hook a hard drive up as well, like I could with the Smart Dock.
Does anyone have any ideas? I of course would hate to have to hard reset the phone, but might do it if there's really a good chance of it helping.
Final question: is it possible that the microUSB connector at the base of the phone could get damaged in such a way that USB to PC connections work, but MHL video does not?

did you plug the dock into an original Samsung charger?
did you reboot?
mhl takes a lot of power, so you need to have the charger plugged in to make it work.
and the usb port can get stuck in a certain mode if you've used it too much without rebooting, a simple reboot will reset it.
I am using the new micro-USB to USB cord connected to the wall charger (FYI, plugged into a power-strip, not directly into a wall outlet, would that actually lead to MHL getting too litle power?). The phone was recently rebooted. I have typed this response using a USB-connected mouse, so at least that's working. HDMI is STILL not working.

I'm guessing that unless it's specifically stated for the gn2, like the samsung dock, the microusb connector is using 5 pins instead of 11. That's the issue you'll have with mhl adapters, too: find an 11 pin, or buy the 5-> 11 adapter.
If it says compatible with the note (not note2) or evo, that's a pretty solid guarantee it's using 5 pins.
-----
I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
in this case the amount of pins is irrelevant. (edit: unless you didn't get a note 2 smart dock)
have you tried a different screen/TV and cable?
there are multiple versions of HDMI, and your cable or screen may be sufficient for an old DVD player but not a newer device.
Interesting that nowhere on the Smart Dock's box does it say "compatible with Note 2". But looking up the part # on the Samsung.com accessories site yields the following description:
Smart Dock Multimedia Hub
EDD-S20JWE
Compatibility: Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S4
As for HDMI protocols changing over time leading to incompatibilities... WTF? They don't need to create specification version numbers like USB to clue the user in? I will test your theory with an MHL to HDMI dedicated connector purchased today. If you're right, even this device won't work with my monitor...
This is going to sound like the annoying tech support people on the phone but... are you sure everything is plugged in tight?
I only ask because when I first got my smart dock I was getting picture but no sound with my hdmi cable and I was about to try a different cable but decided to try replugging everything first and voila...it started working!
It didn't make sense to me because it must be plugged in if it's working even a little but apparently either the phone wasn't docked all the way or more likely I hadn't pressed the hdmi cable in enough.
Would be nice if it's that simple in your case. Good luck!
Sent From My Ginormous Note 2
Thank you for the suggestion. Yes, I had tested the Smart Dock's connections to make sure all were tight. No improvement.
I have given up on the Samsung Smart Dock for now. A "rig" that appears to be working is as follows:
1) Cirago MHL1000 MHL-to-HDMI adapter.
2) Mobile Phone->Voyage adapter (Micro 5 pin to 11 pin)
3) Comkia 3 foot HDMI cable.
4) ASUS VE228H monitor
5) HYPE Bluetooth Curve optical mouse
6) SMK-LINK Versapoint Bluetooth Slim Keyboard
You are definitely right about needing to check on the connection status of the various connectors. I periodically lose the HDMI video signal, which requires that I press the MHL adapter's plug tighter into the 5-to-11 pin connector. Yes, I also have the case off the Note II when attaching everything.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app (using the rig above).
Okay, I'm noticing that the HDMI signal gets lost every 5-10 minutes and blacks out the monitor for 5-10 secs. I also have been having the issue of definitely less than 1080p output (not sure if even 720p) except for video player and Angry Birds Star Wars which do look good.
Is this a problem of the Cirago MHL1000 plus 5-> 11 pin converter, which would be solved if I just spent some more bucks on a Samsung HDTV cable with 11 pins? Will the Samsung MHL 2.0 cable for the S4 provide better output for a Note 2 than the Samsung S3/Note 2 cable?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
Okay, I sucked it up and bought the Samsung MHL 2.0 HDTV cable for the S4 and backward compatible with the Note 2. I think I've gotten things as good as it's going to get. Video out is stable and actually at higher resolution than using a Cirago cable and a 11 to 5-pin converter.
I unfortunately have no USB input capability for hard drive access. Is there any adapter to insert in the "circuit" to let me attach a HD to the Note 2 if its MicroUSB is already occupied by the MHL to HDMI cable?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
hi
Hello, I have a problem when connecting a peripheral (mouse, keyboard, etc) the screen automatically flips and turns black, saying, which it is connected by hdmi too. that's not right.
otherwise it has explain, does not leave me connect the mouse and keyboard, because the s4 assumed that this also connected the hdmi.

[Q] dock with keyboard/trackpad

anybody know of a decent dock that will serve as a stand and offers a keyboard w/ trackpad? i just got my n7 and ordered one of these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009WSCW4S/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 with it and i'm finding that the touchscreen is pretty awkward to use while it's docked. i've scoured amazon for something more suitable with no luck so i thought i'd ask the hive mind. if no such dock exists i should be able to pair a bluetooth mouse or touchpad at the same time right?
Wow... No answers? LoL!! Um... just in case others come looking, you can pair a bluetooth mouse with it. I was looking at that very keyboard dock today. I want one. LoL!! My plans was to use a USB OTG and a wired USB mouse. I may invest in a bluetooth mouse, though.
One thing I've tested before was using a USB OTG: connecting a USB Splitter to it: Then connecting a mouse and keyboard to the splitter. This works. The only issue here may be power. Sometimes the keyboard wouldn't work, or sometimes the mouse wouldn't work. Other times both work fine. I'm lucky enough to have a USB to USB cable, so I plug one end into a power source, laptop, wall adapter, etc, then the other end into one of the splitters. This will give power to the keyboard, mouse and Nexus.

[Q] MHL 3.0 and charging through micro USB?

Hi all,
I'm having two problems that I believe are related.
1) I bought the official MHL 3.0 sony cable and my tv intermitently sees the hdmi source. Off and on every second and my phone screen never displays onto the screen. Also the phone alternates saying its being charged and not being charged.
2) With some power sources, charging by micro USB alternates being charge and not being charged off and on just like the above case. But some micro USB cables/sources work just fine. As well my magnetic dock connector charges my phone fine as well. USB hosting is fine too.
Anyone has tried MHL or have had similar problems? Should I contact clove? I'm in Canada and sending it back there seems quite the pain. And if i just can't use MHL or certain cables maybe i should bite my tongue and keep the phone as is. I love it otherwise and haven't phone any faults until trying the MHL cable...
old mhl adapter works
My old mhl adapter, which requires its own power source through micro USB does work and I can mirror my screen to the TV. I just think that mhl 3.0 with power from the HDMI is not enough to drive/consistently power my phone. Same for the micro USB connectors that don't seem to keep a consistent charge on my phone. Anyone see anything similar?
Use Chromecast, the phone has a dedicated cast screen option
Yes I have used chromecast and it works great. I just wonder if anyone has tried mhl 3.0 Sony cable or has had the same chagrging experience as me.
Were you able to solve this? Im thinking about getting an MHL 3.0 cable but not sure whether my monitor will be able to handle it
