[Q] Rooting w/o USB connection - LG Optimus 2x

Hi, guys! I have a really big problem :/. Right now I'm using the stock 2.3.4 gingerbread from LG ,but you all know that this is the worst OS ever. I wanted to get rid of it but i cant connect my device to the computer. It's only charging. I need a way to root it w/o usb connection. Do u have any suggestions? It's not a software problem! Something inside the phone is broken and i don't know what it is. Is there a way to root it via bluetooth or SD card? I didn't find any apps to root it too. I know gingerbreak etc, but they dont work for 2.3.4. Thank you in advance and i hope there is a solution. :fingers-crossed:

I am afraid you can't. Replacing your micro usb port could solve your problem. I reccomend to buy a micro usb port which is already on the flexible cable so you can avoid ironing.

So i'll need this? I asked a staff member in a service station and he said that the port isnt broken. So i need the whole thing port+flexible cable? Is that what i should do? Thanks alot. Ohh man i cant post links still: http:___//i.ebayimg.com/t/LG-G2X-Optimus-2X-P990-P999-Micro-USB-Charging-Port-Flex-Cable-Repair-Part-/00/s/OTU1WDE0MDI=/z/unUAAOxy9DRSAoTf/$T2eC16R,!wsE9suwycosBS!oTe7+VQ~~60_57.JPG

stupid question: did you try another usb cable or usb port?

Yeah, dude. Of course. I've tried different settings like usb debugging on/off too but still nothing.

here are some articles you might want to check out regarding usb connection
http://www.birdiesync.com/my-android-device-cannot-connect-over-usb

i forgot how the mass storage settings in gingerbread look like but there should be an option to put the phone in "charge only" mode (which you should disable)... pressing menu key in settings > storage doesn't give you any options to choose?

In gingerbread you can only turn usb mass storage and usb debugging on/off. These settings didn't help. I'll read more about the first link you gave me and try it out.

This is quite challenge, root without usb connection. First idea I got to use ADB over WiFi, but this is available from ICS, not on GB.
Second idea - what I remember, some of root methods use APK installation over ADB by script. Maybe you can search for these script methods and place all required files on SD Card. Then try to execute commands by terminal on device itself to install and root.
It's just my idea, maybe wrong, maybe help.

Yes that is what you need if you have to replace your USB port but you don't have skills to replace only the usb port.
You can try gingerbreak to root your phone, but it maybe won't work.

Guys, the problem is not in the computer nor in the cable, it's in the phone. I'm 99% sure that it's a hardware problem. So i need to find a way to root or flash it without using usb connection.

i'm somehow sure that the real problem here is the device driver installation on your PC/Windows, not the phone...
btw which windows version are you using?
did you try checking out the AIO tool thread?

if you read the 1st post, you might find out how could it help you... especially if you use win 8 which caused problems for many other users when trying to install the drivers or trying to flash the phone...
I - Install APX (NVFlash Recovery) Drivers if not already installed.
It starts the windows device driver wizard to help you install the drivers needed for NVFlash. It detects your system OS and gives additional on-screen instructions needed if your PC is running Windows 8.
FYI: The drivers are located under ToolKitFiles\nvflash\driver folder.

I have a friend who has the same phone and he can connect it to his computer so everything is fine with his computer. I've tried to connect my optimus to his computer and again it wasnt found by the computer. The problem must be in my device.
I'll try installing the APX drivers.

And same as mgregor, don't use front panel to connect USB.
Used drivers must be obsolete. Use 3.2.1 or 3.5 and be sure android platform modem is activated to be recognized by b2c
Try LG United Mobile Driver, there is a link on knzo's CWM recovery thread. And yes try a direct port on motherboard behind your cpu case.
Also try another usb cable.

Be sure platform modem is activated in peripherals manager. This is what makes the phone being recognized by pc suite and b2c

Any advice?
Hi guys,
I finally managed to connect my phone to my pc. The problem was about the cables that I tried. Another original lg cable solved my problem.
But now I have an other problem. The brightness of my screen. It is usually at the minimum brightness and I can't change it. It does not change anything when I change the brightness settings. I tried other firmwares from http://luivit.altervista.org/firmwareP970/index.php but did not work still the same!

run mini on pc without installing samsung usb drivers

hi everyone . i have question Is there any way to connect samsung mini to pc without installing bunch of samsung usb drivers? i heard once that there was software which comes for rooted phone that will make ur device that wont need usb drivers installed on pc!!.. im sick of this issue due to i just switched from nokia to samsung and this problem is annoying for me(and im sure for everyone). nokia didn't have this problem!! help someone.
You have to have some kind of drivers. Just download kies and install it, then try to connect your device and the drivers are installed. I saw windows downloading some drivers when I first connected it but idk...
Its one time installation and you don't need to do it again.
Edit: I'm sure nokia had drivers too. They were installed with the pc software.
Nokia supports plug n play on all platforms. But Android supports plug n play only in Linux as Android is Linux. To enable plug n play in windows u need adb(which u call drivers).. Isn't that simple to understand?
Not true. Plug and play doesn't mean that it doesn't need the drivers. Actually, my gf's nokia e75 took about 1.5 hours to install drivers, even after installing the pc platform. Point is, the pc needs them to communicate with your device. So, wait once for them to install, and then you are done gor as long that you use this pc, or this mobile device.
But, it might be usefull to install kies from the samsung website... It has a driver package with it. Could speed up the process

Do you want to transfer files between computers and your device?
Did you get a micro sd adapter with the phone?
If yes, buy some card reader and plug it in every computer you want.
install kies in ur pc and after finishing go to the installation directory and there u will find a folder named driver/usb driver.go to the folder and just preserve the file. u can now uninstall kies and from now on u will have to just install the driver file that u extracted from the kies. by this way mini will be connected to ur pc without kies installed.

Well probably u don't know. I won't give any explanation. For the mini to work directly on any pc, u can try pairing it with bluetooth if the pc has one or there is another way which I currently don't remember. Sony xperia phones does not need any drivers, they have an inbuilt app which does the work. If anyone could find out what that app is then the problem is solved. I think its something like 'sync'
Don't remember.
SwankyShaan
I connect my galaxy mini to any PC i want by turnin on the USB storage mode. We can Transfer files without any card reader or drivers. Only glitch is no access to contacts or inbox but who cares!
Here's how u do it, goto settings->applications->development->enable USB DEBUGGING
Then connect ya phone from data cable, u'll see a usb icon on notification bar click on it n TURN ON USB STORAGE
Simple right?!
P.S:If u don't see a USB icon in notification then enable usb debuggin once again from settings.

That app doesn't seem to support windows 7. My brother in law tried to port it to LG optimus, and to my galaxy mini, but it won't work proper. But, you can always trie to get an app that works with microsoft activesync. That's embedded within windows, so the drivers for that should be found and install fairly quick.

Hi mate, follow my method
PLUG IN your USB CABLE through behind of your CPU (do not jack your phone 1st)
goto SETTING-APPLICATION-DEVELOPMENT, and UNtick "USB DEBUGGING"
Jack on your USB CABLE, okay, now you will noticed "USB PROMPT" . slide down bar and choose USB DEBUGGING (copy files etc bla bla bla it says) and TURN ON USB STORAGE . you're DONE
http://www.4shared.com/get/RsWcxNuH/samsung_usb_driver_for_mobile_.html
Try this file if you don't wanna install Kies and still wanna connect your phone to pc....
install pdanet on pc and while doing steps on it you will need to connect your mobile to pc with debugging enabled and driver will be installed
Plug and play doesn't mean drivers are not there

Plug and play simply means that the drivers are automatically installed as soon as the device is connected.
There is not a single piece of hardware that "does not require drivers" to run as far as i can tell.
Drivers are always required, but u dont need to install them manually in case of plug and play devices.

[Q] computer can't see Galaxy S

my samsung galaxy s is not recognized by my computer no matter what i do!
don't know why, i've done some research, no results.
i've installed Kies, which i assume already installs the drivers, but when i connect, the computer shows no sign of connection (it says that i need to update drivers in device manager??) i tried different USB ports, toggled USB debugging on/off, NOTHING WORKS
the reason i want my computer to recognize the galaxy is because i want to update it to android 2.3.5 via odin. but when i enter download mode, the computer doesn't recognize it. when i'm in the system, the computer STILL doesn't recognize it...???
please somebody help, it's rooted, running a different MIUI version (not the ones in xda dev section), i'm not sure where i got it from, but it's called an ENG_MIUI?
CM7 (and subsequently MIUI) is built from the Nexus S source code, so find the proprer drivers for it. "CM7 drivers" should be a sufficient google search. Also, Kies sometimes interferes while using the other drivers. If you run into any problems, uninstall Kies.

You need stock firmware on your phone to get it updated through kies.

Just to clarify, this won't help you. Samsung uses Samsung drivers. Since you do not currently have Samsung firmware on your phone, this won't do you any good. As previously stated by two very informative posters, you will need the Nexus S drivers to recognize your phone.
And, also as previously stated by just an absolutely wonderfully helpful poster, if you do a simple google search you'll find exactly what you need. Try either Nexus S Driver, CM7 Driver, Nexus S CM7 Driver, or really anything else similar. You could also check the CM7 Wiki, as I'm sure there would be a link for them there. And finally, if you simply search XDA Developers, I'm sure you'd find plenty of posts with what you need.
Hopefully that helps.

Try these (32-bit windows) but make sure that you are having a fresh win7 installed just in any case that your reg got corrupted with drivers (Ime ).
Still not working, then try on another pc..!

Well, CM7 drivers won't help SGS to get recognized on PC on DLD mode, you need another set of drivers and not those Nexus S's. I had the above ones installed on my PC (Google's your Best friend ) .
I had to install the drivers manually,
Right click on computer, click manage -> device something -> find your device in the list, select to update driver, search manually and enter the path to your android sdk and search.
Worked like a charm to me

computer could see device in download mode?
hi
i had same problem, but computer recognize the device as "unknown device"
in all modes, developed, storage etc...
i am close to think thats is problem of internal usb driver of the rom
want to downgrade from de device, whitout usb, but i dont know how do it, because i am not root, and its no possible in 2.3.4 whituot usb.
thanks
I had a lot of similar issues with my I9000, too.
Tried everything on ROM and driver side also on different computers.
Finally it turned out that my Micro USB connector was corroded.
I have around 30 people in our company that have the same phone, and 5 of them had similar issues. I guess it's a common problem with this device.
I took a toothpick and cleaned the contact of the connector by sliding it up and down for a couple of million times. This also did the trick for my colleagues.
I think it's at least worth to try it.
Good luck
i try to clean the contact, but still cant connect to the computer.
I wonder if a method of degrading the system with a signed rom from the recovery, without using the USB cable or ODIN.
i have a same problem. Any new solution?

Are you installing the right ones? I mean, I've ran Odin on all Windows from xp and up (currently on W8).
Also, you could give Heimdall a shot (use a different USB port).

I've tried all the recommended drivers. I'm currently letting my friend try on his machine to take out bias.
I'll try hiemdall soon but if the device with drivers isn't working I don't expect it to work.

Heimdall is a bit different, it installs it's own drivers (hence why I mentioned to use on a different USB port).

Sounds promising. Let me try.
Nope. I can't get this damn thing to work.
Any other suggestions? I can't really do much without getting this connected.

The thread 4-2ndtwin linked has pretty much all the solutions to connection problems.. It's actually the first time I see it doesn't fix someone's connection problem.
Did you try all the his suggested in his thread?

I think most of them.i don't have the original cable and don't know how to get it btw.
Let me look at the thread again.
Edit: only thing I haven't done is try it on Ubuntu....
Also. I should note that I can connect to Bluetooth on the computer but not USB.

Did you check to make sure all the 5 pins of the cable are fine and in contact?
And any samsung usb cable can do the trick, don't need to original per say. BB cable don't work for sure (data pins don't connect), I'm not sure about the others.

Tried with galaxy nexus cable. I'm pretty sure it was connected.
Anyway I can bypass this all with Bluetooth connection? Something I know works....
Edit: I'm starting to suspect that the USB pins are busted up somehow, allowing it to charge but not mount. If someone can show me how to root and stuff without using a USB cable once I'd be fine...

You need to be connected with the USB if you want to root.

Actually, there *might* be. It's quite the shot in the dark though. I can't test it atm (Cappy is at home and I'm at work).
Look for TRusselo. In his sig, there's a 3e recovery fix (it's a bat file that removes the security check when trying to flash). But since it's supposed to be done through USB cable, you would have to grab the file it replaces and move it yourself using a file explorer (with root rights). Don't forget to make a backup of the original file
You could then put speedmod kernel (zip) on your internal, flash speedmod in recovery. (You might have to rename it to update.zip)
I know it seems a lot for rooting but it's the only way I can think of without a USB cable.
If that doesn't work, you will most likely have to get your USB port replaced.

I actually tried something similar last night but I'm confused about one thing.
How do I replace the recovery to allow me to install the update.zip without having root rights in the first place? It kept saying I'm not allowed to do that.

A file explorer with root rights. ES file explorer, Root Explorer, etc. are apps that allow it.

ADB issues. Hangs on < waiting for device >

So I'm trying to flash the Google Play Edition RUU on my device. I have S-Off. When I try to read my CID, it says < waiting for device > and gets no further. I completely deleted my sdk and reinstalled it because I had read sometime this would be caused by needing to update your sdk. It does the same thing when I try to writecid. Does anyone know why it would hang like this when trying to read or write my CID. I'm running ARHD 13.3 with TWRP (don't know what version number) if that would have anything to do with this.
EDIT: Something else I noticed that may or may not be relevant. When I reboot into the bootloader, my computer says device not recognized.
Try using this guide.
Seems you don't have the driver installed.
However, did you try fastboot command in fastboot?
To use fastboot you need to
Fastboot reboot-bootloader
To use adb you need to be in recovery or live in the os.

I tried what that guide said prior to posting this thread. However, upon re-reading it, I think I have discovered my issue. My laptop only has USB 3.0 ports, and they said they could not get it to work over USB 3.0. I will set up the SDK on my wife's computer and use a USB 2.0 port and see if that resolves the issue. I'll investigate to see if what I'm trying to accomplish can be done on ChromeOS too, cause I'd rather use my Chromebook than take over my wife's computer.

That is what I thought, but I was trying other things since I was having issues.

To use ADB with USB 3.0 ports, follow this guide first. Once you finish reinstalling your usb 3.0 drivers with this guide ABD will work properly! :good:

Yeah, I've got an Asus G75VX. Four USB 3.0 ports and a Thunderbolt port, but if I have a device that doesn't play nicely with them I'm SOL.
Thanks everyone for your help! My phone now thinks its a Google Play Edition!

Hi, Yes of course, its a great guide and i did excatly whay they said to my laptop, and i could make it work only for a few minutes, after that the system freezed ( i.e no applications were opening and the system couldn't perform any operation other than right click and left click, couldn't turn off the system even and couldn't open the task manager too ) ,luckily before the system freezed, i quickly changed the kernel of my phone. Then I had no other go other than reverting the USB settings to Microsoft driver.
