Ravpower RP-WD01 Wireless WiFi-Disk Review

Recently purchased the Ravpower RP-WD01 Wireless WiFi-Disk. It is probably the best investment I have made for ALL my mobile devices. I was on the fence about what wireless wifi storage to get Seagate, Kingston Wi-drive, Airstash and lots more but decided on the ravpower. Main reason was that it had a SD card slot and USB port to connect a multitude of different storage devices. And lets be honest, how many SD cards, microsd cards, portable hard drives and usb flash drives do we have laying around? There is soooo much potential with this product and some very nice surprises that I found out that makes this wifi disk a MUST have for all the tech geeks in us.
Bonus, it doubles up as external battery pack. 3,000mah may not be a lot but it does come in handy in those critical must have a charge situations.
Specs:
Wireless wi-fi storage and external battery pack 3000mah
SD card slot
USB slot
The size of the wifi disk is about the size of a portable hard drive. Slightly bigger than my S3; look at attached picture for reference.
To connect to the device you must make a wifi connection to it. It is named "WiFiSD-158E" and the password is "11111111". That is 8 ones BTW.
Performance:
I was able to pick up a wide array of storage media. SD card, microsd in a sd card adapter, Flash drives ranging from 4gb to 32gb with many different brands. It was able to power a Seagate portable hard drive no problem while a SD card was also in the sd card slot.
Many different devices were used to connect to the wifi disk: Nexus 7, Nexus 10, Ipad 4, Acer laptop, Coby Cryos android tablet, galaxy S3, Iphone 5 and a t-mobile S2.
It says that up to 5 devices can be connected to it.
I was able to play all sorts of video files from it, divx/xvid, avi, mp4, mkv, mov.....720p,1080p. It handled it like a champ.
I connected 5 devices and tried to stream a divx file all at the same time. It worked flawlessly, no stutters, no audio drops.
Now I dunno about HD 720p or 1080p files with 5 devices trying to stream from it. Will try more tests later.
You can access your connected storage via 3 different ways:
Now, you can use the recommended mobile apps mobile fun (android) and airstor (IOS) to connect to the device to see your connected storage options. They are nice clean simple apps. Reminds me of an "ES Explorer" type file explorer. Pretty fast, smooth and it simply just works. The one thing the APP is a must for is to make it a wifi hotspot. What that means is that you can configure it to connect to your regular home internet router so that when your device is connected to it; you can still have internet access. Basically it acts like a wireless bridge for your router. Once configured you don't have to use the apps ever again.
You can even use your browser to go to "10.10.10.254" and connect via a web interface. The default username is "admin" and there is no password. You can configure it to have a password; which I did via a wizard tutorial. This is nice since you can connect your laptop to it and access the connected storage.
The last option was a little thing I figured out and was pleasantly surprised! The wifi disk can be accessed via ANY file explorer app that can make SAMBA/SMB connections! File explorers such as "ES Explorer" and "Solid Explorer" have this ability. I personally recommend solid explorer (more on that in a bit).
You just have to set it up (please see attached picture for reference).
For solid explorer press the "jump" button, then "Network" and then "SMB/CIFS" button. Jump>Network>SMB/CIFS
Now press the plus sign button at the top right. It will cause a popup that you will need to fill in the appropriate info.
Display name: can be left blank
Computer name or ip address: enter 10.10.10.254
Authentication method: can set as "Log in as guess" if you did not use the web interface to make a pass word. If you did make a password set it as "store encrypted password"
Username: admin
password: whatever password you made via the web interface
Now you should be able use the file explorer to navigate the connected storage options:
SDCARD-Volume1 = SD card slot
USBDisk-Volume1 = USB port connected storage
Now you don't need an extra app to use the wifi disk. Use the file explorer you love and know!
Solid Explorer is my reccomendation because it has the two pane option when in landscape mode. With the two panel mode, you can navigate to the "SD card" with pane 1 and then navigate to the "usb port" with pane 2. This will allow you to transfer files between the "sd card" and the "usb port" storage seemlessly and easily! There was a step by step guide on amazon how to transfer files between two attached storage options on the wifi disk, but this makes it sooooo much easier!
Build Quality: Seems solid, not too flimsy but quite light. Nice colored LED's that aren't too bright.
Gripes about it:
Only comes in white; no black option. It sticks out like a sore thumb next to all my other devices. The external battery pack I bought before Xmas had a white generic apple charger which didn't go with the black external battery pack I bought.
Does not come with a wall charger; but will use any usb charger.
I do not work for RAVpower but was really impressed with their external battery pack for Xmas. Was even contacted by them after the new year to personally ask how the product was working out for me. That was a pleasant surprise. So that pushed my try the wifi disk instead of bigger name alternatives.

Yeah. It's in the part of using the mobile app. It basically acts a wireless bridge or a hot spot. The wifi disk will connect to your router (after you configure it) and will pass through Internet to your device.

Not yet. I'm running a lot of tests like. How long it can last with various media storage connected; w/ hot spot/bridge mode on and off. How far you can be away from it but still stay connected.

Okay, here's a question.
Can the standard download path be redirected to the WiFi device by an app, etc? Normal OTG support one can save to a flash drive.

I don't think so... It's not a standard path. It's a wireless connection. Kind of like a media server.... You can save to it but like all media servers not all apps have the ability to make a connection to the wifi disk

Great review. I am charging mine for the first time, does the blinking green light ever change color or stop flashing when done charging? The user guide is not at all clear on this.
Edit: The blinking green light which indicates charging eventually just turned off completely. I assume this means charging is complete. Great device with lots of useful options built in, but they could have spent a little more time developing a better set of instructions.

Yeah, it would be same as trying to save a download to your PC with WiFi, it doesn't exsist as a filepath option, only the device or what's physically attached to it(OTG).

If like other device chargers I have, lights blink while charging and stop when complete. Thinking about ordering one of these!
EDIT: Downloaded the manual. Is states a slow flashing green light is off or shutting down. Get this, both steady red and steady green is battery >30%! Can't be both. Not too good of a manual.

I got mine in yesterday. I had to do a firmware update, but it's working with our Stealth Trio, Kindle Fires (running JellyBean) and our iPad 2. For some reason Moboplayer wouldn't work on the Kindle's but BSplayer Lite worked fine. Have tested watching 3 movies at the same time w/out issue.

I noticed that contradiction also. I can tell you only the green was on and I assume it had more than a 30% charge. I am thinking the red light will come on when LESS than 30% of the charge is left, but I have not run it down that far to know if this is correct. The instructions read the same way in both the quick manual and the full one. Nice device though!

How'd you know it needed an update? How big were the movies?

When I connected with the new iPad AirStor software it said I should update firmware. I didn't get the message from the Android apps.
The movies were 700-1000 MB DVD rips. Each device was playing different movies concurrently.
Btw, just connected it from Xbmc using 10.10.10.254 for the path. Bypasses the app. Note username is admin (all lowercase) and password is blank unless you change them in the firmware settings

Look for the file under Tablet & Smartphone software. http://www.ravpower.com/downloads#RP-WD01 I unzipped the file and transferred it to a USB drive and then attached the USB drive to the device and ran the update using the web interface at 10.10.10.254 while my tablet was tethered to it.

I see updates and their names appear to be for two apps not firmware. Am I missing something?

[Q] Using OTG Cable But 64 GB Flash Drive Not Recognised

In the user guide it states "You need a USB On-The-Go micro cable adapter to connect HTC phone and a USB storage device. HTC phone supports USB storage devices (except portable hard drives) up to 64 gb."
I have downloaded ASTRO File manager and on attaching the OTG cable to the ONE and than the 64 GB GB Flash Drive, I am unable to find the flash Drive. The drive illuminates but is not discoverable on the phone. I don't know if 64 gb is too large a flash drive, but it seems strange to state up to 64 GB if it can't take it.
Any help would be appreciated. The phone is locked to 3 and is running 4.1.2.

Are you going up to the root of the filesystem or looking in the built-in storage where DCIM, documents etc.. live? You won't find an attached drive inside your "SDCard".

I have opened Astro File Manager and am presented with the options under locations of
1, My Files
2 Scan local Networks
3 google mail
4 box
5 Drop box
6 Facebook.
7 Sky Drive
No where in any of the folders, do I find anything that resembles what appears to be a flash drive. Please advise so that I can get this to work.

I don't have astro, but best location to start would be my files, then look in the settings to see if you need to change something to allow access to the root filesystem. To be honest the easiset thing to do would be to install root explorer as it will default to top level of the filesystem. Should see a folder called something like "USB storage" there.

Use ES File Explorer much better.
All you do then is press the / button and it takes you to root of the phone and then from there you can choose sdcard.

I think the 64gb flash is formatted as exfat. try formatting it to fat32 instead.

Strange, on my ES File explorer I needed to enable "Up to root" in settings and press the folder with the up arrow on it. Can't see a / button anywhere, just in the location history.

Format the USB stick fat32. NTFS doesn't work without additional software on the phone.

As has already been mentioned, it has nothing to do with size, only how you've formatted it. It can read any drive that goes up to the maximum of FAT32 (2TB IIRC).

are you really basing your opinion on buying this phone from this users inability to connect a 64 gig flash drive via usb otg?
if so, go ahead and get plastic.....you don't deserve this phone.
theres an app that you get that will help mount ntfs over otg.
and yes you can mount portables.

I need a phone that can take files larger than 4GB. What's the point with a full HD display that can't take full HD movies without cropping and cutting?

Like skram said....there is an app in the appstore for that and it is free. you can watch full 1080p movies above 4gb with no cropping. you are looking for an excuse to go with plastic.

I have tried Paragon's NTFS driver. But two reasons I wouldn't choose it:
1. Requires rooting. I'm past the experimenting-with-my-phone stage since a long time back.
2. Doesn't work with the internal 32/64GB.
And no, I wouldn't choose Samsung. My current phone is the Sony XP, which with its aluminium body seems to be HTC's inspiration.

have you tried usb otg helper? it requires root also but looks more promising than paragon's ntfs driver.
if your no longer experimenting with mods, roms, tweaks, root, and such then why even bother checking out xda?

You mean experimentation is a must for XDA users? No other valid reasons to visit this site?
I do still experiment with ROMs. Right now I'm trying to get the newly announced JB for the SXP. But beyond loading different ROMs, I'm not interested tweaks etc.
Same issue with my SXP actually. The internal 16GB does not support >4GB files.

dude, there has to be a way to have your device recognize file sizes above 4GB internally.

[HOWTO]Mount USB

People have asked since discovery of our beloved Ouya once you've got it out of the box you may have noticed that their is a USB port on the back.
After quick maintenance of my own personal testing USB will simply not run from stock.(Not that I'm fully aware of).
There are a few key ways of going about this, two ways as far as we know.
But I'm only teaching one.
First off, if you've plugged up a USB and didn't get a mount, there are a few steps to take to attempt to fix. I've got a positive affect to this, others have had different.
So let's start off first by using the ADB method of getting root a.k.a Superuser onto out device using the tut in the dev area.
Once you've accessed this, download "[root] StickMount" from the market. Assuming that this .apk can't be found on Google let's use an app to pull your .apk from the downloaded stuff you've gotten in the Google Play Store.
Now there are a few apps that do this, I used App2SD and rebuilt the .apk myself(which took a good while recoding), once you've pulled the .apk either load it tons cloud storage area you use, or side load it, you can also find a tutorial in the dev area as well.
Once you've got the app loaded make sure you set the setting properly to detect the USB you plan to use! This is key to getting something detected. From here you should be able to check in your file explorer and locate "ExternalSD" or whatever you see it fall under. If, and only if the USB doesn't show up, that may mean you've got the wrong format. I want each and all of you to give FAT32 a go as this is standard.
Warning, I don't know who all has tried this so if you're not happy with the occurrence, don't come beating my door in.
If there's anybody who ends up with a successful outcome, please leave feedback!

in the file manager that has the default start page in your internal SD card storage. Just select your "USB Storage" instead of "SD card"
installing something like StickMount and needing superuser privileges is totally overkill for just accessing external storage.
if the root and stickmount way works for 1000 GB+ storage sizes i have no idea. However i don't see how it should affect external storage size

You're doing it wrong, then. Mine mounted my fat32 USB ssd right out of the box. No extra apps or haxx needed. It mounts to /mnt/usbdisk or something along those lines.

All Ouya's should mount a harddrive with no problem. You just have to plug it in when it is off or restart using a app or the terminal. It just has to be OFF not in sleep mode.

No, there's different methods for different formats.
Terabytes won't read unless you've got a certain thing installed.

This is true, all of a sudden this week there were many people having trouble using their USB drives. Mine used to work until sometime this week. NTFS included. I was able to mount an NTFS-formatted 1TB Seagate Expansion drive earlier tonight. What I had to do was root my Ouya and use the USB OTG Helper app. I made a post on OuyaForums about it here.

I have a "2"gb, or 2,000,000,000 bytes. 1.86 real gb... anywho, its a Lexar jump drive I wanted to copy files with, and I have a single FAT32 partition and was not able to mount it simply by plugging it in. Tried rebooting, and re-plugging the device. It doesn't work. I imagine it may with stickmount.

Certain Jump drives will not mount because the USB port does not supply enough power. Powered USB drives or very efficient ones will work.

Nope. I have an 8GB usb stick and it doesn't work no matter what I do or what format I put it in. Haven't tried this method yet but what you're talking about does NOT work for everyone. And the powered 2TB external drive just causes Ouya to freeze every time at boot.

I have never seen a powered USB flash drive. Furthermore, if a flash drive isn't mounting due to the port not outputting enough power, then the drive or the mobo is broken or otherwise failing to adhere to the spec. External hard drives (spinning platters) of the type common a few years ago when flash drives were cost prohibitive generally DO require an external power source (or at least draw from 2 USB ports), but they generally aren't referred to as jump drives. In my experience (which is considerable but not infinite) most flash drive issues tend to be due to bad connections after the drive is beat up or by managing to write past the end of the drive. Flash media is generally reliable and does not draw more power than the USB port puts out by spec. I highly doubt that power supply problems are a common cause of mounting issues.

It seems that you just wanna shun the method I gave you.
If you dont want help, that's fine with me but please don't come into my threads to tread on my method.
Firstly, I need to know!
Are you rooted or stock?
If either, have you installed Ouya Plus?
If so! Try the given method above or Google an apps that suits your needs.
We are here to help, and I'm telling you right now that this method has worked for me, and maybe other users.
FACT:
Not all Ouya have been able to read USB from start, more than others have reported having issues with USB and have had to use the root method to even get a reading.
TIP:
Wanna check and see if your device is/has been read?
Please either use FX File Manager or Astro as these are the best at the moment. Both can be found and side loaded onto the Ouya.
Once you've installed either one, go to the manager, do you see an "External Drive" or "USB Mounted Drive" on the device? You're good to go.
ADVICE:
Did this not show up for you?

I've only heard of Apps2SD working with ROOTed Ouyas only.
If you can't find the solution here, go and check the official forums, there are some people there who helped me.

Since my 8 GB USB storage formatted FAT32 worked by just plugging it in, i am not to say what format storage should be formatted in, but seeing that this is just Android, i don't see how setup should differ in anyway from most other devices.
Now plugging in storage does not bring up any notifications on the OUYA since notification area has been disabled.
So you need to use a file explorer to navigate into the USB storage. Sadly, OUYA decided not to add something as simple as access to your own file system.
in "Make" "Software" open the browser. navigate to this:

Mine wouldn't work right out of the box. I turned it on and set it up. Plugged in my 2.5" spare laptop USB 3.0 HDD. Nothing. 32gb NTFS Thumb drive. Nothing. 16gb FAT32. Nothing. MicroSD 16gb (used in my MK808). Nothing. Thought my USB was blown. Plugged in a PS3 Sixaxis controller and it worked. So something was strange.
Read online that there was a firmware patch that must have broke some things. I'm assuming this broke if a USB was previously mounted.
Only a Factory Reset would fix it. Plugged in the USB HDD and it booted right now first time. Spent 2 days screwing with it.
So if nothing mounts, factory reset. It SHOULD mount out of the box. FAT32 and NTFS are both confirmed to work with no additional apps.

I did a factory reset, still wouldn't work. I lost hours of work to set it up.
I managed to fix it with a script after about 5 hours

yeah no problem. However i REALLY fail to see how this belong in the development section. This should be for ROMs, MODs and tweaks, not really how best to get a build in stand feature working. No matter how bad it has been implemented by OUYA.

[Q] OTG (on the go) Drive support

So far I have been unsuccessful in mounting an external OTG drive with my N6. Has anyone been able to use an OTG drive? If so, can you help me figure out why I cant seem to get mine (multiple drives) to be recognized? I don't have an issue with it being recognized in other devices with Lollipop.

I don't think the stock kernel supports OTG. Just wait till someone releases a custom kernel that supports it (hopefully).

What about mhl adapters? Chromecast works great for screen mirroring but sometimes its easier and more convenient to use mhl.

Everything I've seen, mhl and slimport are confirmed not supported

If you have to do it ....chromecast is 25$ at Walmart black Friday sale

Confirmed working for me as well. If you're not rooted, you can try "Nexus Media Importer". That's worked for me in the past on devices that were bone stock.

I was able to use ES file explorer to see USB content. Just swipe right, press local and it should show a USB device. This was on an unrooted N6

I got a keyboard to work with my USB otg cable

I got a flash drive working via USB OTG, but only through ES File Explorer, Solid Explorer didn't recognize the flash drive. Has to be formatted as FAT32 or NTFS, exFAT didn't work.
I'm going to give Stickmount a try to see if other apps will recognize flash drives.

I'm using Stickmount with Root Explorer. Works fine with an exFAT formatted usb thumb drive.

meant to reply yesterday and say this It also works I agree. cant wait until its in a kernel

I'm not rooted and was able to get OTG working using the Nexus Media Importer app. ES File Explorer could see the USB connection, but wouldn't see the files on the drive for me.

Nexus Media Importer worked just fine after a reboot, and it allows for reading usb device files, not sure about writing to usb but I only needed to read them, thanks. I'm not rooted btw.

I got OTG to work on the store display model at T-Mobile (one employee let me try my otg cable with my flash drive he set up a playstore account and i downloaded the app otg disk lite free) just need to download otg disk lite app from the play store to get USB support but I can confirm it works

Hi guys,
Does the N6 need a Y-cable for extra power like the Nexus 4 did or it's a simple USB to microUSB connection? I have such a Y-cable from my N4 period and I was wondering whether I need to connect the extra power or not. Reason is I don't seem to get the usb otg working fully:
So, I can see the drive's contents through ES File Explorer but not through MortPlayer (folder music player). Whatismore, the drive does not show up in "Storage" after my SD as it did in my Nexus 4 so I am guessing it's not fully "mounted" ? My main reason behind using usb otg is playing music from my usb flash but my favorite player (MortPlayer) does not seem to pick up the drive as it did on the Nexus 4.
I am rooted and I use Sticmount to mount the flash drive... any ideas?

Mi Moto X doesn't read Hard Drive

Hello, I try to connect a Toshiba hard drive to my Moto X xt1097 using OTG but it doesn't recognize it. Does anybody has an idea why is this happening?

Maybe the format. What format is your hard drive's file system?(ntfs, fat32, etc...)

Most likely that is the problem. You need to look for a file manager app that says it supports OTG and NTFS. FAT32 is better supported via OTG.

I connected the same hard drive to a moto G, and using root explorer I could see my files. But in my Moto X nothing happens, not even using root explorer.

I had problems with it before in root explorer(on my first gen X). I switched to ES File Explorer and it could work better with OTG. But that was just from my experience.

I plug in my external hdd's often onto my Moto X and it detects fine using root explorer. You need to go to the root of your filesystem->storage->usbdisk, but you probably have tried doing that. You could try connecting a different pen drive or hdd to see if those work or not.

I've connected an usb pen drive and everything is fine.
I've noticed also that, when I connect the hard drive, the device detect it briefly then nothing happens.
Also, I've installed some apps from the play store that help mounting and unmounting ntfs devices; when I connect the hdd the app starts blinking and a message appears constantly "device attached", device detached... And so on

This is probably a stupid question, but is it a small portable HDD? I remember sometimes I had issues connecting an old 2.5" laptop HDD. The phone couldn't provide enough power for it to fully operate, and it would just keep spinning up and spinning down, but never fully operating.

It's a small one

Power is definitely your issue here. The typical 2.5" HDD takes 1-3 W of power. However, the typical OTG device can supply maybe 1 W max.

Well, I just tried my external USB 3 500GB drive (2.5"). Only FAT32 worked. NTFS and exFAT would not work at all.

Yeah, I formatted each time to see what would mount. The Moto X mounted the HDD immediately. I usually use solid explorer for file management.

It's frustrated. My Moto G 4G running cm12 detects the hdd immediately, but my expensive Moto X running stock 5.0 doesn't. Could be a rom related problem maybe?

Yeah, I think NTFS read/write working is due to CM12. I don't think NTFS ever worked on stock roms on any android devices, due to licensing issues and such. I remember reading about NTFS-3G or something like that being incorporated into CM that enabled NTFS read/write.
I tried the Paragon exFAT, NTFS & HFS+ app, and it mounted my HDD w/NTFS formatting, and I could see my files in solid explorer, but I couldn't actually open anything.
I don't think there is much you can do other than using FAT32.
