What is the easy way to get this thing just rooted somi can change the stock programmed touch sounds and stuff like that. I dont want to put a costum ROM or anything like that on.please can someone help?

Just use the all in one tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2242639
should work fine i think the August update just effected S-OFF not root just put it in C: folder and run it if you are on Windows 8 you will have to search for the right HTC drivers on the forum the one in the tool won't work. Google it.

i reinstalled the drivers but every time the second window pops up for the token it doesnt show my device as found

ok i got the token id to show but i cant highlight it with my mouse

ok i got the bootloader unlcoked finally. but i thought that woud root the phone so i can change protected files like the stock ui sounds? but it doesnt show me as having root so i cant. how do i root this thing now?

[Q] New to Rooting

I'm been searching the Nexus One Q&A section for an answer to my problems, but I couldn't find a solution. I'm running a stock version of 2.3.3 on my phone. It's never been rooted, and I have never rooted a device as well. I'm entirely new to this and have no idea what I'm doing. My device has no warranty but I'm still concerned about it. Again, I have no experience at all.
Also, I don't know if I would want to unlock the bootloader as I could lose everything. If there is a way to retain everything reliably (I don't know if those back-up applications are the most effective) that would be convenient.
So, can anyone help me root my virgin Nexus One?
Thanks for your time,
Tread Fox
Mybackup pro backs up apps and data. After you root you can use titanium backup. Also smsbackup and restore for your SMS :]
Alright, that's re-assuring. But what about actually rooting the phone?
Hmm I can't help with rooting because I have an Evo, just sharing some backup knowledge :/
You can use this threads wiki for the N1 and the stickies here:
http://www.nexusoneforum.net/forum/nexus-one-development-hacking/
You need to read several guides until you get a good idea of what you are doing and why.
Use the apps mentioned above to back up your phone info, once rooted you can do a complete and immediate phone backup of everything, like a full image pc backup.
If you do the one-click method, make sure it is for you OS, you will be limited in some things you can do, like fastboot commands and will be unrooted if you dl OTA's.
Read, Read, Read!!!
Before you flash a rom read the op page carefully and the last 20 pages for tips, info, issues etc.
Ken
This works for 2.3.3?
EDIT: So my only options are to unlock the bootloader or roll back? Which do you recommend?
You probably saw this in XDA wiki for N1:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Nexus_One/Guides_&_Tutorials#Root
I would unlock, more options as you get more into flashing and you can't be unrooted by Google OTA's.
This is good guide for the S, but you can glean steps and maybe better understanding for the process. At the bottom in related posts is a root guide. I like the steps, but things like the fastboot and superuser may not be for the N1. However you can find them online. Just an easy to understand guide.

Sorry man, just got your message (phone died on me, and I've been playing with my other toys anyway...)
Yes, your options are to unlock the bootloader or roll back.
Both options will lose all date, so you need to backup either way.
My preference is to unlock the bootloader, but I can understand why people may not want to. Unlocking the bootloader can effect any warranty that's remaining on the phone (the phone has a 1 year warranty, no matter who owns it).
Thanks for all your help guys. Does anyone have a specific guide for rolling back? I don't need or want a custom rom, just setcpu...
Read my signature, execute PASSIMG method with FRG33. if it doesn't work (and sometimes it doesn't) - you're out of luck.

This is how to go back to FRG33: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11745519&postcount=21
But if I were you, I would just unlock your bootloader. Makes life easier.
I'll unlock the bootloader. I saw a guide on the nexusoneforums on how to do this. But it's about a year old. Is there anything that's changed?
I'm sorry I'm being indecisive, I'm trying to take suggestions from anybody!

No, nothing has changed. You need to have the Android SDK set up properly. Then just boot into the bootloader by holding down the trackball while pushing the power button. Then open a command prompt in the directory where the fastboot.exe file is (probably C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk-windows\tools) then just type: fastboot oem unlock
Follow this to set up the, it's easier (just the first post):

If you feel like you are in over your head, you probably are, and have not done enough reading. I just looked at danger-rat's post in the link he provided, and it seems quite straight forward, no? He even tells you how to install the drivers. "Step #3" under "To install the drivers" in the first post TELLS you that windows will detect new hardware and will ask you to install a driver. What seems to be the problem?
I did, and nothing happened. At all. I asked for it to download files from usb driver. Nothing happened at all. Is it something I'm doing wrong?
I have the SDK file on my desktop, I have all of the files inside that are needed. When the computer asks me to download the drivers, I re-direct to the usb driver folder located in the SDK which is located on my desktop. The computer claimed installation was successful, but nothing happened. When I try clicking the fastboot.exe in the tools file, it immediately forcecloses. Is it my pc? Is it the file? Is it the phone? I did read the material and so far nothing has helped.

Well, after you have installed the driver that the computer asked you to install. That's just the driver needed to sync your file and stuff on your sd card. The other driver and adb setup is needed to actually access your phone.
So I asked for it to install the wrong files? What files do I install? Because from that guide it said point to usb driver. I'm only following the guide like you all asked, and nothing happened.
You don't launch fastboot by clicking on it windows.

Does anyone know an easier way to put clockwork onto my phone? I mean other than (adb).. for some reason it doesn't pick up my phone.. Is there an recovery App coming out soon?

make sure you have debugging mode on and that your Windows or Mac proper LG drivers are installed so that the phone is recognized also put CMD in the same folder as platform tools in sdk manager folder vice versa for files needed to be pushed to phone.
I got the drivers from the LG website for my cell, hmmm... ill have to recheck everything else because ADB has never gave me this much trouble

I'd be willing to code a one click solution if it would be helpful. Its pretty easy as it is tho

I had the same problems. I followed everything step by step and made sure I had the right drivers along with everything I would need with Java. Still no luck. I have the combination of feeling stupid and frustrated. I have rooted and installed custom roms on three different phones before.
A one click solution would be amazing if you could come up with that. I will try the ADB way again later.

Try updating all the drivers for adb. It would be helpful for you and it would probably solve your issue.

Does one click root work for you? If it does, there is nothing wrong with your drivers.
Once you get one click root working, put the recover in the ADB folder that is part of one clock root.... then open that fold, hold shift and right click, select open command prompt, then type in the adb commands from the CWM instructions thread.
LG uses the same drivers for all their Android devices, I used their driver installer app and selected the Verizon LG Fathom since it didn't have the Thrill listed anywhere, have had no problems.
Some reason my comp doesnt do any of this correctly... so much for brand new tech
Does one click root work for you?
If not, you have a driver problem, fix it by downloading LG's driver installer, select Verizon for the carrier and then select the Fathom. If you have a drive issue, and that fails to fix it, try a different USB port... make sure you have your phone in debug mode... can you mount your SD cards?
If one click root does work, then YOU, not your new technology, is doing something wrong. So the question is, what are you doing wrong...
Please answer the question, does one click root work? From there, tell us step by step what you are doing, and we will tell you what needs fixing.

Ok, then driver issues isn't a problem, I would take a really close look at your ADB commands, and be sure to wait 30 seconds after each one to let it process.
I would recommend copy pasting the longer commands (right click copy, right click paste, the keyboard shortcuts don't work in command prompt window).
now it says permission denied on first command?
Then you don't have root... run one click root again. I would use it's driver check feature as well before running it.
lol i lost root? wow ok strange... i have superuser
Well... if you get accessed denied you either are typing something wrong, skipping a step, or trying to do something that needs root and you don't have root.
Do you have debug mode turned on? Do you see this active in your phones notification bar? That first line doesn't even need root access, if IIRC.

[Q] Cannot figure out how to root phone AAAARRRGGG!

OK. I started out this adventure to root my phone because I want to use it as a wifi hotspot for my Ipad and not pay AT&T $50/month for that "privelage." I can't figure it out!!!
Phone Info. - Samsung Captivate with Froyo kb2 build. It has the 2.1 adroid when I got it then I updated to 2.2 through the Keis program when it was available.
Before anyone starts with "read and search" lecture, I'll tell you that I've been on this site for a combined 9 hours reading and searching and nothing seems to work. I've tried one-click root programs, I've installed a rooted version of my stock ROM, Ive downloaded more apps, files, or software programs than I can remember. I know how to get the phone into download mode and I know how to boot into recovery mode, but nothing works. Everything seems to come back to the 3e Recovery I have because when I think I am almost there, I get a failed signature error.
I tried the 3e Recovery Mod and that didn't seem to do anything. Is anyone out there willing to help me through this? I am not a programmer, and I don't have any android experience whatsoever, but I can follow direction and am willing to learn. Everytime I find a new thread I seem to get more confused because I'm unclear on the jargon being used, or the thread is on a different ROM or phone so I don't know if it will work. I know "brick" is a bad thing so I don't want to do that.
I any of the experts had my phone what would you do? Do you need more information from me? Also, once I get this figured out, I'de love some recomendation on a better, faster ROM to install.
ANY HELP WOLD BE GREATLY APPRICIATED. Sorry for the frustration.
When I was on the Official Froyo 2.2 the first thing I used to successfully get root was this... View attachment SuperOneClickv1.6.5-ShortFuse.zip
This version was the only one at the time that would work. Extract it and run the SuperOneClick application. Be sure to have the usb debugging on.-- Menu /Settings /Applications /Development /then check the USB debugging.
Hmmmm.....very odd. Froyo is super easy.
Do you have Super User showing up in the apps drawer?
AND DON'T USE KIES ANY MORE FOR UPDATING !! YOU CAN BE IN FOR NASTY SURPRISES.
Been there. I'll try it again, but I think it still can't get around the 3e verification stuff. I'll let you know.
No SuperUser as of yet. I guess that is the point. Once I get rooted, I should get SuperUser status.

After u try the SuperOneClick from my previous post, reboot ur phone and then see what u have.
After nearly 9 hours of trying...I have cracked this thing. Turn out there were two threads about the 3e recovery mod. I tried the manual thread with no success. I just found this one that has a one click script to do it.

Once I did that, I used Captivate One Click Root and presto....I now have SuperUser permissions. Sweet.
Thanks to everyone that responded to my questions. I'm sure I'll have more about ROMs and such.
^ Good deal. Glad u got it.
I figured I would be back.
Anyone have a link to a clear explaination on how to CID unlock the Captivate? A video would be fantastic, but I know how that goes. Also, is there a way to tell if it is unlocked or not?
Thanks

I tried that early on because it looked so easy. All I get is "Sorry, no codes found unknown error" Is there a way to tell if I'm CID unlocked or not? I haven't done that yet that I know of. I did click the unlock button is Super One Click, but it did nothing. By that I mean the program, nor the phone seemed like anything happened. Early on in this process I found the completly rooted version of my stock Froyo 2.2 and installed that on my phone thinking that it would root the phone. Later realized it doesn't work like that. How do I check the CID lock? I'de like to try one of these cool ROM's I keep reading about.
unless you are planning on running the captivate on another carrier, you dont need to unlock it.
I was under the impression that I needed to CID unlock the phone to flash any ROM not produced or signed by the carrier. I thought SIM unlock was what allowed you to take the phone to another carrier?
As you can see, I know enough to be dangerous, but I'm slowly learning.

CID unlocks do not apply to Samsung phones.
once you have a kernel that has CWM built into it, you can start flashing. nothing else required. you dont even need root if you arent planning on using something like titanium backup before you flash.
Cool.
So any recomendations on my first custom ROM install?
I tried installing a custum boot animation last night and had no luck. I used CWM to flash the file I downloaded, but no change. I tried to copy a new customanimation.zip (I think that's what it's called I'm going from memory here) but I don't have RW access to the System folder. I tried using CWM to mount system and then fix permissions through recovery mode, but that doesn't do it. I'm using Droid Explorer to copy the file but it won't copy. There is a customamination.zip file in system/media so I tried to rename it .zp and it won't take. I assume that is a permissions thing.
I guess I'll try Root Exploer from the market. People seem to be having luck with that.
you cant use a bootanimation.zip on a stock kernel. It just be enabled in a custom kernel.
Go read some more bro. A LOT MORE.
OK. so it looks like I downloaded a custom animation zip file, but I need to flash a kernel that allows me to use the anmation. I ran across a post about that so I can find it.
Was was confusing to me was the uploader of the animation called it "flashable" so I thought that was the kernel and all, but I'm now guessing that by flashing it it simply installed it into the system/media folder for me???
Still looking for any suggestions for my first ROM.

[Q] A few questions regarding the s-off method for Vivid

Right now I'm following the excellent guide on this forum to root my vivid. So far I my bootloader is unlocked and I'm on s-off part. The guide links me to another forum that says I need to use insulated wire to touch two certain points while running a program. It says the wire has to be a certain gauge and has a video to demonstrate the process. I have run into two problems, however.
The video that is linked has no sound. I don't know if this is a glitch or an act of YouTube or just how the video is. I'm afraid to attempt this knowing I could be missing some important info.
My second issue is that he never actually says what gauge is needed for wire. I take it this is Tue kind of thing I can get at best buy, right?

The video is like that it is meant for you to visually follow the instructions. You have to just do everything the instructions tell you. And the video watch it like 2 times.
Also when doing the wire trick you need to make sure an SD card that is already formatted for your phone is inserted
Ppl think you are supposed to touch o e end to the first little dot then the other end once to the little piece of metal on top of the SD card. But its 1 end to the first part hold it and the other end you need to touch it once for a second then again for another second and it should work... If it doesn't work and you get something like soft failed with other text before it then that means you just didn't do the wire trick correctly... Just do it again it might take you many tries before you achieve s off...
Hope this was help full

Does not matter at all. I did it with an uninsulated paperclip; I've heard of people doing it with twist-ties.
ARGH! Ok, so I downloaded the program and got the wire ready, but when I try to run controlbear.exe as admin, it says no root detected and forces me to exit! If I'm supposed to do this AFTER I root, why does the superguide tell me to do it BEFORE I root?

Kind of. I'll break it down into simple steps for you on how it's written in the superguide.
- Bootloader unlock (not rooted)
- flash WCXrecovery (roots the phone)
- S OFF
- Update HBOOT
- flash WCXrecovery once again
The superguide does tell you to do s off AFTER root.
You are talking about the command "fastboot flash recovery wcxrecovery.img" right?
I did do that before running the program. I've tried it twice with the same results.
When I enter the command, it says it worked but something must be wrong.
EDIT
Tried a third time, still no luck. Here is a step by step of what I'm doing:
1. Power off phone and get in to fastboot. Connect to pc and in cmd I enter fastboot flash recovery wcxrecovery.img, the command is executed successfully.
2.Right click ControlBear.exe and run as Admin.
3. Program auto-reboots my phone. When it's fully rebooted it says something like:
Backing up.....
No root detected in backup!
Secondary backup FAILED!!
press ENTER to exit.......

Hi sugarshock,
I had exactly the same error as u with same hboot version.
Do this
goto http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498003
and download the tool
only perform recovery for ICS and then perm root
viola no more error message from control bear about root...
hope that helps...
I am not meaning to high jack this thread, but i just had a quick question, I only want root for things like freezing bloat, and on the off chance I decide to trade my Vivid for another phone i have 29 days left to make up my mind. Anyways if I flash WCX Recovery does the stock rom become rooted?

You dont have to pay anything to anybody to unlock your phone. You have to first unlock our bootloader. Go here
Follow the steps correctly and make sure you have the necessary software in your computer. After that follow this guide
@OP, +1 to aashay960, you do that and you could achieve a network unlocked Desire C.

In the Last step It Says
"On your phone you will now see the disclaimer. Please read this carefully as this action may void your warranty. Use the Volume buttons to highlight your choice, and the Power button to make your selection. If you select Yes, your phone will be reset to its’ factory default settings, and your bootloader will be unlocked. If you select No, your phone will reboot and no modifications will have been made."
But nothing came on the phone, what to do ? my phone is connected with pc

Benifits are increasing the productivity and potential. New interface, features etc.
Higher android version. Desire C wont get an update to 4.0.4 or sense 4.1 So installing CM10 for example brings all the new features of Jellybean to your device.
Personally i hated Sense UI and was impatiently waiting for a rom that used something else. Even before i would swap it for other launchers.
By far i am most satisfied with CM10, but my ultimate goal is a fully functional CM10.1
Penguin449s roms are great, so is Darkbreed. I advise you to stay away from WIP roms like CM9 and CM10.1 untill you build up the knowlage.
*self promo* Try the kernels, i heard NOPE is good ;3
Anyways if you have any questions feel free to ask.

"I heard NOPE is good" Haha lol
On a serious note, what me448 said was absolutely correct.
But if you don't wanna go too far from htc, you should try the sense roms out (there are only 2 ). They will give you a slight change in the looks but huge change in performance.
That being said, 'generally' people do have been experiencing better performance on cm10 than sense roms.
But I feel that as you have just rooted your phone, going from stock to cm10 would be a huge change. Basically, it's all down to personal preference.
Also, check out the frequently asked questions thread in the general section, or click on the link in my or me448 's signature.
It will help you to get started on things and might answer a few more questions you may have. Also, i heard it is good

Guys, I also want to unlock my sim on Desire C. I managed to get phone bootloader unlocked, Rooted, HTC driver installed and a busybox install. I am following the step 2 "Sim Unlock Guide [Desire C]"
but the procedure I don't follow.
1) Do I connect the phone with PC with USB cable under bootloader Mode or Recovery mode? I connect the phone with pc with USB, but it is NOT in Bootlaoder or Recovery Mode. I just have the phone boot normally
2) How busybox work?
3) I enter command "ADB Shell" in Windows-cmd, a bunch of thing flashed. I didn't get " sh-3.2#" , after I enter "SU", nothing happend on my phone, in cmd command prompt, it says "SU is not recogized command"
I don't think my PC is talking to the phone. what do I do? many thanks for your help.
i final figure out the problem, it's so silly, i just need to put in a microSD card in the phone, then adb command works perfectly, just log in to phone normally, plug in to your pc via USB, run the adb shell as instructed, unlock the phone is seconds
remember unlock code is 8 digits long, I got two sets of number, one set is 16 digits, it is not the unlock code
