can you elaborate? Google now works just fine for me, you need to press and swipe up the home button.

You are probably on non-english locale which blocks Google Now from initializing.
Move phone language to English US or UK, Initialize google Now and then switch back to your current locale.

[Q] Kit kat update broke Google now hotword detection on moto x

I updated my Moto X to kit kat yesterday and now my hotword detection doesn't work on the home screen or within Google now. I have the nexus 5 home launcher installed and fear it could be part of the issue, but it worked fine in jelly bean so I don't know why it wouldn't work here.
Anyone else having this issue?

I can safely say it's not the new home launcher. I've been running that for awhile now and both the motorola detection and the google detection work fine (i.e., I can say "okay google now" at any time, or say "okay google" when the device is already woken.)
I haven't done the kit kat upgrade though

I'm having the same problem.
"Ok google now" works as it should.
But when in google now, saying "ok google" does not activate voice control...very strange.

It seems that Moto may have deactivated this on purpose to prevent it from interfering with the Touchless Control feature.
Same thing, it was working shortly after the update I believe.

seems unlikely. i can't seem to get mine to work either, even though Google Now settings say to listen for "Google".
Select the Auto-Update tab from the top and choose one of the auto-update options (we recommend leaving it on “over WiFi-only”). After that, scoot over to the All tab and find English (US). You’ll notice it already says “pre-installed”. Don’t listen to it. Select English (US) anyway. From there, jump to the Installed tab and press “English (US)” where you’ll be asked to download the latest version (version 28 at the time of writing). Hit “Download” and the updated version will be downloaded and installed.
After it’s finished downloading, press the home button where you’ll notice “Ok Google” will now be displayed inside the Google Search widget. Simply speak that phrase whenever you’re on your homescreen to perform a Google Search or voice actions. That’s it. Was relatively painless, ri

Something is definitely broken. The image I included shows Android 4.4 and Android 4.2.2 differences. 4.4 is missing the "Ok" and maybe that is why it doesn't work? It worked fine before and now doesn't. English is my set language and that doesn't fix the problem.
just my 2 cents.

KidCuda,
Orsini has left out some steps. Where is his selecting Auto-Update tab (play store?)? I don't see anything that says "pre-installed". Where are you even looking for 28? I would like to confirm what number I am on.
Thanks.
Even you had 28 Download English language.

He's talking about in Google Now, go to the "Manage downloaded languages" section in settings. I tried this (on my Moto X, even though I'm typing this on a Nexus 7) and it didn't work.
My Nexus 7 just updated to KitKat tonight and doesn't have this problem.

Okay. I was able to update to version 28 and it still does NOT work, but something changed in the settings. See attachment.
I uninstalled the english language pack and reinstalled it to no avail...

you said you have been away for months  When I switched for the M7, it took me some time to understand I had to swipe that button lol
And are you sure its not related to locations? I had some feature missing from Gnow here (canada) when location and language not set to english/usa

[Q] Google Now cannot be activated since KitKat upgrade

I've always been able to use Google Now on my Xperia Z1 on JB. I've updated it to the latest KitKat version and I can no longer activate Google Now. It says I need to activate Google Location Reporting and when I go to activate it, it says "Google Location Reporting is not available in my country."
Now I know Google love to block availability of products on a geographical basis, I.E USA only....
I just find it odd that it worked on JB and now they've locked it down in KitKat.

Change your language in google search. Go to voice then english then US. Should work.
It's already set to US. Unfortunately doesn't seem to work.

Ah well then it's not going to work, i know the Z2 it doesn't work on either, as i've tried it.
Only launcher i've found it to work on from the homescreen is the Nexus 5 launcher, i've been using that launcher for some time now and have only come back to the Xperia one since the Z2 launcher was released, i've not upgraded to 4.4 yet, i'm going to allow the kinks to be ironed out.
If you click search then it'll let you use the ok google feature but wheres the fun in that

Google assistant

Anyone notice on their new pixel that the new assistant is not working? The assistant is Still the old one, which you'd need to keep squeezing or repeat the hey google phrase.
What language are you using? It didn't work for me when set to English (UK), but works when set to English(US). It seems it is limited to English(US) at the moment.
Also cannot be used with a GSuite account, has to be a personal Google account.
I've switch to english US and have always used a personal Gmail account. Not sure why it's not working. Might just wait for google to fix the damn thing.

Where are you from? It is U.S. exclusive. Not just the language setting English(US). Don't know if you knew that. I'm from germany and I won't get it until they open it for us...
I got my phone yesterday (in the UK) and once I set it the assistant to us US English it installed an update and just works using the new assistant style, so it's not U.S. exclusive in that sense. Thankfully they've also added UK English voices for the assistant to use when talking back (when set to U.S.)

I'm from Australia, but has set the language not english US, still no luck
After giving up a few times, I notice that I was missing the google home app. After downloading the home app, in settings there were an option under continue conversation where you can enable or disable "shared devices". I disable that option and, What do you know, after squeezing the phone for the assistant, it automatically update itself to the new assistant. Hope this help others too.
set to english US and it updated and works

Any way to get continuous conversation to work without the gestures?
I don't use it
I just got off chat with Google rep and they told me it's a known issue that they are trying to fix.

Go to settings, search "continued", and toggle the option. Works with squeeze, "Hey, Google", or tapping the assistant icon on the search widget.

Oh! My bad. Didn't realize that was necessary. I read gestures and was thinking Motion Sense gestures. [emoji2359]
I know Android is all about options and all and sucks that it's not an option for the button based navigation but why not use gestures? It's very fluid and quick.

Sorry to hijack the thread but is anyone else having issues with the squeeze for assistant feature? Mine seems very temperamental.
If I leave my phone locked for a bit, then lift it, it unlocks and the squeeze is not working. I then have to tap on the power button to lock it again, unlock and it starts working again.
