Will Z1 C6903 work on US ATT with plain 4G? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I ordered today from Expansys, Which I am assuming sells the C6903, I was wondering whether it would support 4g network speeds on ATT, I know it won't support LTE, I don't need LTE, unless 4G is lte??? (trying to find out the bands for 4g vs/ lte is confusing me!) I've been using the HTC raider in the US and it says 4g in the signal area, nothing about lte. As long as the speed is the same as my current phone I'm fine. Thanks! I guess im trying to figure out if the phone will connect to HSPA+ (if that is what ATT considers 4g)

you will get hspa. no lte

Thanks!

If your city has 1700 LTE band deployed you might have a chance, mine does, ill report back once I get the phone next week

Would you happen to know how to find that out? I currently live in Texas
EDIT found that it is available in the following cities: Phoenix, Raleigh, San Juan, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Chicago, Charlotte, Athens, GA and College Station, TX.

All of a sudden...getting Rogers 3G on x1i

OK, I must be dreaming! I looked at my x1i today, and I'm suddenly getting 3G/H. Until today, I've always only had Edge.
fieldtest.exe band shows 255:unknown
Ran speed test from dslreports.com using Opera; showing 1124 kbit/sec for a 1MB file test. Ran again with IE and got 1190 kbit/sec
I know the hardware specs on the x1i don't match up with Rogers 3g network, so did Rogers change their network recently?
This is an unlocked x1i with Generic UK ROM 1.05.931.10 R3AA010
I'm in Aurora, Ontario (north of Toronto).
Anyone else seeing this?
Rogers rolling out 3G on the 1900MHz band or you have an X1a.
I've had this x1i since December. So does anyone know if Rogers is changing, and has anyone else suddenly seen 3g?
I started noticing the 3G symbol about 2 days ago myself here in Toronto, before that it was 95% of the time E and sometimes just G. Now its 95% 3G and its unusual for it to go to E anymore. No idea though on benchmarks since I don't have a Data plan at the moment and so I only use it when I really need to. Will see if any friends have a data plan though and don't mind me borrowing my SIM for a few minutes and giving it a try, because I'm curious now. Getting the 30 fps VGA recording and 3G locally - that'd be awesome .
Peter
Thanks, pdamouse. This gives me hope that Rogers has changed their 3g network, and that I'll now finally have a really cool phone.
Anyone else seeing the same thing?
Anyone have a tech contact at Rogers that might be able to confirm?
maybe you just passed by one of the very few 1900mhz towers
Called Rogers tech support earlier; the rep I spoke with had no idea, so he asked a colleague. The colleague apparently said they now support all 4 frequencies.
The colleague was on a call, so I couldn't get any further info.
So theoretically, I was told that Rogers is now running 3g on 850, 900, 1900, 2100 mhz.
I have not been able to find anything on Rogers' site to confirm in writing.
Anyone else able to confirm?
Aha! Think it may be related to Rogers introduction of the HSPA+ ROCKET™ MOBILE INTERNET STICK
See: http://your.rogers.com/Store/Wireless/products/rstick_info.asp
Specs there indicate:
Technology: HSPA+/EDGE/GSM
Frequency:
HSPA+/UMTS 850/1900/2100Mhz
GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900Mhz
Data Transmission:
HSDPA – Up to 21Mbps downlink
HSUPA – Up to 5.76Mbps uplink
Great I am not the only one that noticed this. Last week I was walking to the subway and noticed 3G and H on my phone. I was blown away! I spent the weekend downtown and had 3G/HSPA everywhere. Couldn't do a speedtest but it was definately faster than EDGE.
From what I noticed, downtown Toronto now has 1900 3G but as you leave the city towards Mississauga you go back to EDGE.

Got the same situation on last Friday when driving at 401 and 404. But didn't get a chance to test the speed before it jumped back to EDGE.
I'm getting 3g consistently in Aurora and Newmarket. Better in some areas than others.
Also noticed 3g as I was coming down the 404.
Now in Pickering, and it's completely back to edge.
ok wtf, i bought my phone from rogers, and i've been getting 3G and H for a month now, but i just checked settings->device information->identity and under model it says x1i not x1a. anyone else noticing this? maybe because of custom rom?
from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4579528
go into Settings, System, Device Information. Select the Hardware tab. Beside the first entry, CPU, you'll see one of two things:
"QUALCOMM(R) 7200A" means you've got X1i
"QUALCOMM(R) 7201A" means you've got X1a

lol I live within 200 meters of where those highways meet (404/DVP and 401) - that might be why I've been seeing 3G on my phone 100% of the time I'm at home. I never thought being this close to the busiest highway intersection in Canada would help me get better cell reception - but apparently it does .

Lucky you. The 3G signal disapears at Finch, so I still can only get EDGE at home. Hopefully more towers will be upgraded soon.
Today I managed to stay in place long enough to do a speed test.
I got 2.2mbs down and 0.65 up. Not really mind blowing but I was in a building and wasnt getting full signal. Also, there is 3G in north Mississauga, it's weird.

Sorry man, I'm sure they will be adding more towers - the area is expanding quite quickly. I was suprised at getting the signal more than anything, and someone mentioning right where I live as the place they see it - I way way over use the : P smiley...
wait a second here
This thread doesn't make sense - I have read elsewhere that the X1a and the X1i have identical cell frequencies.
To confirm, can someone with an X1i do the following:
Go Start > Settings > Personal > Phone.
Select the Band tab.
The second drop-down box entitled "Select your GSM/UMTS band" should give the following options:
Auto
GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100+900)
GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850)
UMTS(2100)
Those are the options I get on my X1a, purchased directly from Rogers. Aren't those the options on your X1i as well?

I actually get this on my X1i:
Auto
GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(900+2100)
GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850)
UMTS(2100+800)
But we are discussing 3G support and HSDPA - they use different frequencies for that here as opposed to Europe, and the X1i uses those European Frequencies, while the X1a is specialized for North America. The GSM Quadband is a given that it will work everwhere there is GSM - but the 3G bands are not universal.

Nexus one and T-MOBILE 3g? Is the coverage good?

Hi! I have a nexus one on AT&T and absolutely love it, but due to cheaper prices and better customer support I am going to switch to T-MOBILE. So is the coverage with T-MOBILE with nexus one 3g issues worth it? How is T-MOBILE service? Please post your speeds and location in the comments. I live in East Texas and get about 2.5 megs with AT&T. Thanks forrest.
I've been with tmobile for about 6 years and their customer service is pretty great but their 3G coverage is a bit spotty in some areas. Personally, I usually have 3G and H speeds and I live in the Miami-dade and broward county in Florida. I can't really give you my speeds because I haven't taken the time to find out but they usually have a map that shows their coverage, though I don't know how accurate they are. Hope I was of some help.
I live in Sacramento and get about 700-900kbps. Nowhere near 2 megs. I've heard of other areas that get much faster speeds (HSPA+ areas). However, I rarely run into an area where I won't pick up 3G.
i live in miami florida, their service is horrible; atleast in my neighborhood. i cant get 70k downloads to save my life.
I just did one quick speed test and I got 1.77 Mbps
Yea I'm picking up my N1 tonight from the FedEx hub since my gf can't answer the door.
I live in Cincinnati OH area and it seems to be good. My neighbor has full bars on his Nexus one and Tmobile, although I don't think he's the type to know his download speed.

I live in Cincinnati as well. The west side of town to be more accurate.
I can agree that for the most part 3G/H is pretty common there are still a decent amount of Edge holes in certain areas.
Overall the connection is pretty good.
My issue is the download/upload speeds on the Tmobile 3G/H network in Cincinnati. It doesn't matter where I go; Downtown, Kenwood, Blue Ash, Milford, Springdale, Cheviot, Northern KY... My speeds are pretty subpar
for 3G+. I get on avg .4-.5 mbps down and .3-.4 mbps up no matter where I am at in the city. This includes being within a football field of an H equiped tower.
They have some major work to do in Cincinnati when it comes to upgrading the networks backhaul.
remember you will have to buy a new nexus one to work with tmobile's 3G. the att version only supports ATt's 3G, and the tmobile only supports tmobile's 3G. so you will need a new phone

This is true. They are setup slightly different to handle that carriers specific 3G/H frequencies. Maybe you can sell yours on Craigslist if you decide to and break even.
That is my plan. Anyone with coverage in Texas? espicaly in East Texas? Also when is the 21 mbps supposed to be released? I am just a little hesitant to jump ship.

Anyone getting 3g/4g on t-mobile (in markets they claim to have 1900mhz)

I'm in NYC... which T-Mobile says has the 1900mhz (for the push to get ppl to move their iphones to T-Mobile.)
Sadly, i'm still putt'n around on edge. No luck in dumbo/Brooklyn heights or mid-town.
Anyone having any luck? Maybe I have to change the APN or something (it is already set to epc)

I live in el Paso and waiting to get the 1900mhz my focus s is still on edge but I hope we get the 1900mhz by the time the lumia 920 goes on sale so I could hopefully use it with t-mobile. For coverage check here: http://www.airportal.de/
YEAH saw that little 3g+ icon in mill creek today (WA)
I got it in Manhattan last weekend (for a short time) around 57th and 10ave.. got the 4g.. and fired up a speed test. got 7 down and 1 up. I could live with that (or anything better than the yarn and tin cans that is edge speed). So far that is the only place I've seen in Manhattan or downtown Brooklyn.
I live in phoenix Arizona and I occasionally get '4G' sign on my focus S. Never seen 3G sign though. Either 4G or Edge.

we don't have 4G at all, its just a marketing **** up, so you shouldn't see 3G unless you cant get an HSPA signal

[Q] Sony Xperia C6903, LTE on AT&T

I emailed GSM Nation to see when they would received the C6906 because I want to use LTE on AT&T. They sent me a reply saying that many of their customers use AT&T, and have been reporting LTE working.. Are they just blowing smoke up my ass? If not, is there a way to see what bands are active in each cities?

i'd be cautious about buying the C6903 and using it on AT&T in the U.S. I had the international version of the Z earlier in march C6603 and i never got LTE on that phone, only HSPA+. I used this phone in Minneapolis and never saw LTE. I also did a road trip from Pittsburg to Orlando and never saw LTE on the way anywhere. Also used in Miami without LTE.
I believe its important to have the 700 band if you want to see LTE on the AT&T network on a device.

You can use the 6903 model on AT&T, I'm using the Z1 on it right now. But to get LTE support you are correct, you need the 700Mhz band which is in the 6906 model.
Bleh, I had the same concern and called ATT and asked. The guy told me this.
ATT uses 700-1400mhz spectrum. meaning 700 though, not and. So any device that supports bands "in that range" will work fine. Was he misinformed, or is that right? When is the damn xxx6 model coming out anyway?
I'm using the xperia on ATT right now no LTE but I do get hspa+ which is fine (is a 50mbps connection REALLY needed for a phone?) Anyways there is a chance that LTE may work in the US because ATT is rolling out and already has the 1700mhz band in a bunch of cities: Phoenix, Raleigh, San Juan, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Chicago, Charlotte, Athens, GA and College Station, TX. The Nexus 4 people were reporting that it works but not sure about Z1. I'm not from any of these cities so i can't confirm if its working. Maybe someone can?

When it's been shown to give better battery life thanks to race to idle advantages? Absolutely.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6330/the-iphone-5-review/13
>The non-LTE phones see a sharp drop in battery life. At least at 28nm the slower air interfaces simply have to remain active (and drawing power) for longer, which results in measurably worse battery life.
This doesn't work on slower LTE networks like verizon, but for us on ATT we can get better battery life while enjoying faster speeds. Note that in that graph anandtech measures HSPA+ as "3g", as it is 3g, despite ATT and verizon's marketing. I make this distinction to prevent people from thinking they are testing the older 1.4mbit or whatever network they used to use.
I'm probably going to get the Z1 without LTE functionality in my area anyway, because at the end of the day I'm without a smartphone right now (my HTC one got washed with my clothes and doesn't do much other than vibrate when it's plugged in now) and don't want to wait for Sony to stop being lazy and put out the model with 700mhz LTE.

The only reason it improves battery life is because its take you less time to download things which is a given. If you're constantly downloading extremely large files then maybe you need it, but for me not so much.

The answer is yes, they are blowing smoke up your ass. In order for a phone to get AT&T LTE, you need Band 17. That is their primary LTE band. They also supplementarily use Band 2, 4, and 5 in select cities where they don't have Band 17. Similar thread in the Z Ultra forums, which have similar models which might clarify this more if you need more details.

You did not read the source I linked I think. It shows web browsing, not downloading massive files. LTEs speed and therefore race to idle advantage applies to more than just downloading large files, it shows battery savings in normal day to day use, from things that drain quite a bit of battery like browsing to smaller things like syncing gmail accounts.

What speeds are you guys getting on ATT with the C6903? If the C6906 isn't shipping anywhere by midnext week I'm going to order the C6903, I've been android less for 2 weeks now, I'm going crazy. I don't use my phone as a hot spot or for file downloads, so I don't need crazy speeds which I don't even get anyway LTE wise in my area, usually 22mbps max and on average upper teens.

I'm getting 8.22 Mbps down and 1.13 Mbps up with full bars on AT&T right now. I'll do a few more tests to check for consistency.
EDIT: Just ran another test and I got 9.21 Mbps down and 1.13 Mbps up.
I'm full bars on my Lumia 920 here at work, only getting 5/0.6 on LTE so I guess C6903 would do just fine. I only ever get good LTE speeds at home, but I use my phone on my wifi connection there so it's not very useful. Thanks!
I received my Sony Xperia Z1 from GSM Nation yesterday and can vouch for the fact that the 6903 model will in fact NOT work with AT&T's 4G LTE network. I live in New York City too, if that means anything. I spent the entire afternoon trying to connect to the LTE network. Instead, I was able to connect to the 3G (HSPA+) network and that's it.
I am very unhappy about this and will be returning the phone to GSM Nation immediately. I love LTE speed and did not know that battery life was affected by it too (thanks for that youwonder!) so I'll patiently wait for the 6906 model to be released. Does anyone know when that might happen? I can live with my old Galaxy Note II for now I suppose. Agh!

Heres the message I got to the query, about at&t lte from GSM Nation, also asked them about 6906. Edited out private stuff.
"at&t's main frequency for LTE is 700 mhz so the 6903 working is really upto where in the US you live and that is unfortunately not information we would have. It is certainly limited markets for 1700's but these are just reports from customers from our followups.
Regardless we do not advertise it as compatible with at&t due to it being limited markets. And would advise that customers purchase it for use with at&t LTE at their own risk. The c6906 model traditionally comes to carriers first so that would be the safest bet at this time if your looking for at&t LTE. It should be available soon in the US."
seems pretty clear cut.

PMFJI. I own the C6506 (Sony branded, carrier unlocked) which support a wide range of bands including LTE IV and LTE XVII, both of which are used by AT&T. In addition, I get PCS 1900 which AT&T is rolling out.
I get NO LTE service and I was told this is by design. If you do not own an AT&T branded phone, the network will not permit you on the LTE network. I am provisioned for LTE but I cannot get even 4G.
This was not explained by anyone and it took me a number of support calls and escalations to learn this. I believe the only way to effect change on this rregressive policy is for people to complain. There is no reason to penalize BYOD customers who choose not to own an AT&T branded device.
My device specs for LTE: 4G Network LTE 700 / 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 - C6506

Good to hear. My mi max 2 should arrive on wednesday and since I'm on att I can test it out as well. I'm hoping I have similar luck.

Also, could you tell us what city you were able to get 4G in?

please let me know- if you dont see 4g, do a manual network search and pick ATT 4g....that did the trick for me....
I don't have the Mi Max 2, but the Zenfone 3 Ultra which has similar bands. I lack all the LTE Bands except for Band 5. I can confirm that in all major cities I have been to I get LTE through band 5. Heck, even in my city which is only about 300,000 strong I get 4G/LTE in half of it. Seems like AT&T is really ramping up their band 5 LTE service.

Thanks for sharing the info. I looked up your phone and if you have the global version it appears you have more LTE bands available than the Mi Max 2. Namely bands 2,4 and 17. While ATT does provide LTE for band 5 I won't get my hopes too much for LTE. As long as I can get strong HSPA+ that's enough for my needs

I think you were looking up the specs of the Zenfone 3 Deluxe, not the Ultra. There is no version of the Ultra that has bands 2,4, and 17. Trust me I'd buy it if they did.

Looks like you're right. I should've checked the asus site instead of the 3rd party sites below. Lesson learned

At any rate, got the phone today so I should be able to test tonight!
Finally got some time to set it up. I can confirm 4G (HSPA+) in South Jersey. Hopefully, I can go to philly this weekend to test for LTE connectivity.

Does it say 4G or H+ as the indicator? If it says 4G then you are getting LTE already. The international phones say 4G and the american phones say LTE.

For me, it says H+. However, I haven't had a chance to go to the city yet. I would say though that my nexus 6p gets LTE in the primary area I use it in but when I switch the sim card into the mi max 2 it only gets H+ in this area.

right now i am travelling on I -94 Wisconsin- Minnesota- North Dakota, and most of the time my indicator tells me 4g....
Sorry to bump an old thread but I was in Texas last week and I picked up 4G in San Antonio.
Also back in Illinois I am picking up 4G here. This started after the last phone update.
Yeah Band 5 is nicely saturated where I live so I can't complain
