removal of gps_drv.ko - Ouya Android Development

I am one of the people who has issues with WIFI on the ouya, mainly very slow download speeds. (while good upload)
In doing research, it seems that some people have improved downloads speeds by disabling the GPS. Seeing as the Ouya does not have GPS I am wondering what purpose the gps-drv.ko module serves and if removal will have an ill effect. I can try to unload it later when i get home and see but was wodering if anyone had looked into it at all.
Thanks

While lacking the hardware part it doesn't make sense to me why GPS_dev.ko even should get loaded. I think this and maybe other parts are just relicts from generic defconfig for kernel.

I took a look last night and it is not loaded anyway. I'm really trying to like the Ouya but the wifi issue makes it impossible.

I notice that too on my ouya. The wifi is either solid or not. Its inconsistent to the point sometimes it will be connected to wifi but will have connection timeouts for Google play and other apps.

What I find strange is, that even with the current (November 2013) update, the GPS is checkmarked on in the Android location provider settings.

I really don't know why they decided to use a Wireless G chipset. If they had included Wireless N, much of my issues with the OUYA (actually, the only one), would just not be an issue.

I had no idea it was wireless G... that explains a lot

I am on a N only network and the Ouya connects just fine. Where did you see this information that it only has wireless g? Google results for "ouya specs" also brings up a plethora of reliable websites that cite the wireless as "b/g/n". Do you have one of the first Ouyas? If you have wireless issues, make sure your network is configured properly. Find a channel that is not congested. Google has the information on improving wifi.

FYI, Where ever your getting your info from is WRONG, read the specs OUYA's WiFi 802.11 b/g/n protocals.---> http://www.theverge.com/products/ouya/5869

Well i can confirm my self that the wifi issues are caused by the Stock Factory shell that was used to HOUSE the Ouya's internals, that alloy material blocks/restricts communication between the ouya and the wifi and the same for the Bluetooth, i always knew that the stock shell had something to do with it... i went and bought a clear Acrylic shell for $15.00 online and it resolved all of my controller lag issues and slow/poor wifi signal and performance, now the wifi is 3x faster then it was and my ouya runs cooler because of the extra cooling holes i asked for...you see with a acrylic shell the signals has no problem getting thru, there's no metal blocking any communication plus the clear acrylic shell looks awesome and i can see all of my OUYAS internals and the fan spinning ... over at facebook lots people were complaining about there console controller lagging and slow/poor wifi, so i showed them my OUYA wrapped in Clear Acrylic and told the about the improvements and gave them the link to where to order one from, 3 days latter about 20 people hit me up thanking me and telling me how much the OUYA improved specially the wifi and bluetooth just by replacing the alloy shell for a acrylic, $15 is all it takes to fix the issues, Trust me!!! here is the link just in case anyone is interested---> http://www.bdgcustoms.com/store.html

GPS and Wireless G has nothing to do with wifi issues, OUYA is capable of wireless b/g/n...

I suspected the stock case was acting like a faraday cage. With no external antenna, the ouya is sensitive to wifi disruptions, not to mention it might be a low power wifi. This is why it is imperative to have an optimal wifi setup while using the stock case.

i was thinking of making a external antenna mod for the stock shell but i decided to save myself some time and go with the $15 shell, no modding required, and now i'm glad i didn't cause replacing the shell with acrylic fixed the issues, before i was only able to sit and play 6-7ft away from the OUYA before the controller started lagging now i can sit about 15-20ft away without a problem...Don't get me wrong i love the stock OUYA shell, how fancy it is and all, but the alloy obviously was a bad choice to house it...

I haven't looked at this thread in a while. The reason in initially had looked into the removal of the gps_drv.ko was reports of nexus users experiences similar problems with wifi after upgrading to 4.1. Since there is no GPS in the ouya i figured removal was ok but as one of the earlier posts said, it was not getting loaded anyway, so no need to remove it.
I tried everything other did but the way i finally fixed the wifi issue was by buying a cheap net gear wifi router and running 40feet of cable through the house. That one is now about 15 feet from the Ouya and i get great speeds.
In my option the wifi ball was completely dropped on the hardware. The lack of a way to connect an external antenna was a pain but not as bad as the lack of a real internal antenna.

Magnets on a case intefere with GPS?

Does anyone know if magnets interfere with GPS? I don't have a data plan, so I use TomTom GPS with the maps stored locally. I'd like to use my phone as a GPS on my motorcycle, and could fairly easily fabricate a case with a magnetic plate that could mount to the middle section of the handlebars.
For illustrative purposes (not my bike or same handlebars, but that rectangle-ish section in the middle is where the phone would go): http://home.cogeco.ca/~ninja650r/bikemaster/DSCN5929.JPG
I don't care about phone reception as I won't be talking while riding, but retaining GPS functionality would be fantastic. I'd also like to verify that the magnets won't damage any other parts of the phone, such as the screen or storage media.
Any thoughts? Anyone have a better bike-mounting suggestion?
Generally speaking, magnets are a big no-no for electronic devices. To get one strong enough to make sure that your device doesn't fall off while riding would almost ensure some kind of permanent damage to the device. But you might want to wait for someone else's opinion.
That's what I figured, but I was hoping I might be wrong. I haven't seen any real method of mounting this phone functionally on a bike. Is there a RAM mount that works?
I'm sorry, I don't know exactly what a RAM mount is. You could probably get a hard case for your phone and install that onto your bike, and put some mounting brackets to keep it on tight. I really don't have any other ideas.
That's essentially what a RAM Mount is: http://www.ram-mount.com/
They sell mix-and-match parts, consisting of a base, an articulating piece, and a bit that holds your device. Some GPS and similar devices actually have a RAM-standard set of mounting holes. I'm not aware of anything like that for the Vogue, although there may be an aftermarket case with RAM mounting abilities... I'll have to look it up.
Thanks for the feedback!
No problem. I hope you get it sorted out! It would be a bummer if you couldn't get it to function easily as a GPS for your bike!
Agreed. I was looking at the more inexpensive bike-centric GPS units and realized that the TomTom Rider is essentially the same exact thing as the TomTom software on my phone. I'm likely going to be upgrading to an Android phone this fall/winter, so it'd be nice to retain some use from the Vogue.
Anyway, if I do get or build a mount, I'll post some shots in case anyone else has the same thought.

Not to be completely off-topic, but android for the vogue is coming along nicely, so you COULD just keep the same phone. The only nice phone I know of for android coming out is the xperia II. I know there are others on the way... but that's the only one I know of right now
And pictures would be nice.
To make a long story short, I don't have a data plan for my phone which is why I use TomTom for GPS (maps stored locally). In theory that should continue to work even when the phone itself is deactivated.
I've been waiting for a good QWERTY android phone. The Xperia II, if it's actually an android phone (and not WinMo as I'd heard) would do nicely. I do a lot of work "in the field" and being able to type up quick emails and documents would be nice. Too bad the Lancaster isn't spec'd as well as the Hero, or I'd consider that too. If the rumors of Sprint getting the Hero are true, there's a small chance they'll get a QWERTY version eventually, or something similar. The Touch Pro2 would be an option if it were fully functional under 'droid as well.

where's is my great tablet?

Everyone is writing that the Nook Color is supposed to be a great tablet.
I somehow haven't started to enjoy it at all. I'm having massive problems with the touchscreen, when it's cold outside I can not use it inside for a while - till it warmes up again - the touchscreen gets unresponsive and random taps.
I also get random taps sometimes and the tab becomes completely unusable.
I can't find any slick ipad-style apps. And generally can't find a lot great apps, no xfire client (xfmobile doesnt work), no internet radio etc...
There's no real good Os, cm7 has no videos, honeycomb is too laggy, I haven't tried Froyo really...
I want to enjoy my Nook Color, but somehow I can't really - especially because of the touchscreen, it's ruining the whole joy.
I initially wanted to buy a cover for my "iphone cover" for my ipod and then tether the connection to the nook, but im quite unsure, because the thing isn't working well.
I'm actually thinking about selling the device again on ebay and getting a galaxy tab or a dell streak.
A lot of the issues you're describing, touchscreen aside, aren't realty problems with the device, but moreover the fact that Google only really released tablet intended apps 2 weeks ago. The apps you're saying you're not liking or waiting for are designed for Honeycomb, not froyo/eclair which is what NookColor base is composed of.
Just give it time man, the awesome will come

Anyone who is telling you it's a great tablet is exaggerating... It's always going to be an eBook reader first. With this community it can become more but it is sold solely as an eBook reader.
I've got no problem with it being a ereader primarily, i was actually looking for an ereader when I found the Nook Color. But if the touchscreen is so bad sometimes that I can't even flip the page, or it starts zooming in and out randomly, my reading experience is also not so splendid anymore.
I'm going to try one last thing - going back to stock 1.1 and then I'll give Froyo a try.
huh
Sounds like you're in need of a hug.
Who cares if you sell it on ebay and buy a tab? Do it and enjoy, don't whine here about it.
I haven't tried it yet, but by most accounts, you have skipped the best os. Nookie Froyo is supposed to be the most useful and stable os available (completely stock is more stable though). I don't think anyone said it would be as good as an iPad. They just said it was much better than the budget android tablets and a great value for it's low price.
Sounds like 1 of these 3.

Strange,
I thought Pandora actually qualifies as an Internet radio .
Anyway, are you saying that even with rooted Nook and Android Marketplace you can not install any of the internet radio apps? For example, highly popular TuneIn Radio? I haven't yet rooted my Nook but TuneIn Radio was one of the main reasons I was looking forward to doing it. I am not a big fan of Tablet-based games and I prefer to watch movies on my big screen TV, but music, radio, unlimited Web Browsing (hello, Apple ;-) and photo-frame app were my biggest drivers in getting Nook Color over the first-edition Nook.
As for the actual issue... keep the screen clean and put a film kit on it. If you still have glitches, go get it exchanged. If you bought a car and it only ran on 3 cylinders you'd get it exchanged for free, right?

A little bit of research could have prevented your disappointment.
Before buying something, do a Google search on it and see the good and bad points of whatever item you are looking to buy.

Its sold more like a tablet limited to be being an ereader for the time being by B&N, as they have a update promised to bring a market and apps with it.
As was said earlier, this is more a problem with android ifself or the apps not being designed to handle the screen or hardware and issuses this brings (like scale problems or angry birds not showing up for awhile b/c we dont have a cell modem).

Try warming up your fingers and using the screen when it is cold. It is more likely that your fingers are less conductive than the screen is not working.

The touch screen does'nt like moisture or wet hand. If you go from cold to warm place, you'll get a lot of moisture on the device

I haven't thought of that, my hands are generally cold, when i was outside then they are nearly dead cold - my ipodTouch works perfectly no matter in what condition my hands are, but that's also a different quality.
Is there any way to get a similar film/coating that is supposed to be on the touchscreen of apple devices onto the nook?
Could you tell exactly how cold it was when you're experienced touchscreen problems? Today I used Nook when temperature was around 0 degrees Celsius and the only problem I had was that screen surface isn't slippery enough, so it was hard to play Glow Hockey.
Has anyone really called a Nook Color a "Great Tablet?"
I have mostly seen "best tablet under $300," which it is. I am loving mine, if only because after years of having an iPhone getting to switch Safari for Firefox is a godsend...
i have no problem running the slacker radio app. so no problems with internet radio.

The N5 has let me down

Last weekend I went on a bit of a trip visiting 2 cities and was expecting to use the N5 as GPS (navigating trough the cities), camera and media player. I am sorry to report that it failed miserably..
First was the camera : all was well until i got the "cannot connect to camera" dialog and had to reset the phone missing the moment to be captured. If it were a one time event I could have over looked it but it happened about 5 times in 3 days. I didn't use HDR or other camera apps, just the stock camera taking normal photos/videos.
Secondly, (related to the camera) the mm-qcamera daemon drained my battery like crazy so i was always charging the phone and took a survival attitude towards it (2g, no data, no wifi, minimum brightness) negating it's smartphone capabilities as much as possible.
Lastly, and most infuriating, the GPS just didn't work. I had an internet connection (chrome and facebook worked just fine) but it just wouldn't load the map nevermind driving/walking directions.
To top all this, my friends Galaxy Ysomething with gingerbread performed flawlessly all of the above. Needless to say that after this none of the group will ever consider a N5 as their phone.
Sorry for the vent/rant but it can't be all roses..
Wow... All of those points to a defective unit.
Trust me, this phone is better than your friends smartphone

Stock Pure Google experience.. never tried it.. :cyclops:
considering i have never experienced the camera issue once since me and my wife have owned the phone, his experience is a isolated one.
1 of 2 things happened to cause his issue:
1) hardware failure, which is beyond anyone's control
2) he modded his phone and broke something, which can be fixed by going back to stock (or should be anyways)
I would return it in a heartbeat! That is unacceptable for any device and those are each large enough issues to cause concern. I have been an android fan since I first held one some years ago. Every effort towards modding in the past has been to attain a pure stock, nexus-like experience. I purchased to N5 to stop chasing that dragon and honestly...it has been somewhat disappointing. Constant drain from com.chrome.sanbox, camera daemon running constantly and horrible audio. I have rooted and flashed away many things, but always at the expense of stability or another feature that I favored. Google needs to get their sh1t together. This is a great device, no doubt, but there are too many little problems that en up adding to a major PIA considering that this phone comes straight from the folks who makes the OS that we all love. I understand your frustrations OP, that is unacceptable. I would return it, like others have stated. That's too crap going wrong on a singular trip to be considered just a glitch. I love my N5, but it is ridiculous to overlook glaring flaws simply because it's a Nexus.
GPS should work very great though. I drain maybe 10 percent in an hour with it running, and it locks in less than a second for me...

What a coincidence that his camera, battery drain and GPS issue occur all around the same time. You maybe right about the software issue but I was replying with the assumption that the OP is running stock..so my bad. However, I've got a bad GPS reception, it barely connects and I've tried on both stock and custom kernels. I can't RMA or service it through warranty since I got it from abroad.
well, I've had my Nexus 5 for a few months, and I use it constantly. The camera has never given me a single issue, and neither has the GPS. I use the GPS quite frequently, as I recently moved to a new province, and don't know the area.
I've also used my Nexus 5 while traveling(between Alberta, Canada and Nova Scotia, Canada with many stopovers in between) and not one issue.
I can't speak for stock, as I flashed CM11 the moment I got my phone, but I use what's listed in my signature. I highly recommend those. A few times, there's been issues with the Chaos kernel, but not for several months now.
I'd definitely say give custom roms a try. But if that doesn't fix it, revert to stock and return the phone right away if possible.
I found the phone simply excellent when I was traveling around London, GPS camera and battery all good.
Sounds like you have a faulty phone.

The last time I saw the "cannot connect to camera" message was on my Xperia Play, which had a faulty connection with the front facing camera. I've never once seen it on my Nexus 5. That one definitely points to a faulty unit.
Camera battery drain, apparently this is a known issue, although I personally haven't experienced any issues.
GPS issues...I don't ever 100% rely on any GPS device..way too much room for error. That said, I used the GPS on my N5 last week to pinpoint my location on the map to help me find the house I was delivering to. Worked as smoothly as it could. Maps was open, I turned on GPS, boom, the blue dot told me where I was, good times were had by all.

I agree. While I understand their frustrations, it is pretty dumb to say that no one in the group will ever buy a Nexus 5 because of one phone had issues. Umm, ok? Does any phone from any manufacturer have a 100% fault free track record? I'll save you the google, the answer is no.
I also have n5 since it was released, rooted and on stock with latest updates since 3/18/2014. I had note 2 before and I gotta say I miss it. For 2 main reasons, multi function and battery. I think I will sell this with next note release. Yes you get latest updates but when you are rooted I'd rather not have the latest updates.

The battery drain comes from a very real bug concerning how Skype interfaces with your device's camera. Google has even come out and said it's a major problem (after doing their own internal stress test and finding it to be a real bug). They are likely to fix it, but here is more information for you about it: http://phandroid.com/2014/03/04/and...ogle-fix-arriving-in-a-future-android-update/
Don't let anyone fool you into thinking that specific part (the GPS and Camera malfunction, I cannot speak to) is just your device. People with stock Android and people on custom ROMs have also been experiencing it. I run Carbon and it still happens to me. That's why I keep Skype frozen or Greenified (a better solution) unless I need it. Of course, that's a pretty bad workaround, especially if you pay for Skype calling or need to be online for messaging.
I hope it works out for you. Also, I can't quite claim to know for sure, but the warranty is not tied to the original purchaser, it's tied to the serial number on the device. My brother purchased two Nexus 5s (to ensure we both got one) and before I could do my first RMA, I had to ask them to swap the Google account over to my Google account.
That was it. I don't know how the warranty system works in Romania or Germany, but don't rule it out yet!
EDIT: To follow up with the warranty process, it should not matter what country you are currently in, the warranty will follow the laws set down by the country of purchase. If you do need to do an RMA, they will ship you a new one (overnight if needed) and ask that you ship them back the old phone within x number of days or else you'll be charged full retail.
If you have questions about this, please don't hesitate to ask. Everyone deserves to have a great phone.
Will look into RMA-ing it since i have a first batch (ordered 2 weeks after launch) and some complain of poor audio on their side.. The problem is that i cannot access the device playstore from my country..
Any ideas are appreciated.
The camera issue could be caused by insufficient ram at the time of operation. U sound like u wanted to do a lot of things with it on ur trip, it could've possibly ran out of ram at the time and thus couldn't load the camera. I had the exact same problem with my galaxy s3, clearing apps with an app manager fixed the problem (I used system panel). However the n5 handles ram extremely well, never have I once been Over 1.2gb used and I use it vigorously with no ram or task manager app. Kit Kat is just awesome.

WiFi Hotspot

I'm interested in the Urbane 2 if it can be used as a wifi hotspot but I can't find any references about it anywhere.
I have two sim cards, one that I use as my main phone number and the other one with unlimited data for wireless connectivity when needed. I carry two devices now and it would be more convenient to me if one of them was the watch.
Thanks for any help.
Watches usually had small battery. I don't think it'll last long as hotspot.
I don't need it to last long. Only for a few minutes at a time and 8-10 hours per day.

Anyone knows if it is actually supported or not? Someone who owns the Urbane 2?

Nothing on the watch itself. If you can find an app for wear or that has wear support then I don't see why not. The main bug bear with this watch is the lack of cellular supporting apps, hopefully a change that will come through with AW 2.0.

Ok, thanks. Hopefully AW 2.0 will address the issue.
Hi with the LG Watch Sport out, the LG Urbane 2 is dropping price, now around $170-$190 region for mint/new.
I was wondering if anyone knows, tried succeeded/failed on using the watch as a Wifi or BT hotspot, so say I had the watch, say a tablet, and a USB battery to keep the watch running longer, with the phone acting as hotspot for the tablet to get to the internet via the watch?
Does anybody have any information on the matter?
My cellular contract gives 5GB free and I too cannot
use my LG Urbane 2 as a Hot Spot.

I'm interested in this as well (Urbane 2 LTE here) as with Sprint, I can't talk and data at the same time - like it's friggin' 2008 or something. So in those situations when I'm in a conference call on the road and I want to pull up some message, it'd be nice to pop on the watch's hotspot, phone connects to it while in the call, and voila, data & call. Might burn through my ~35% end-of-day battery reserve, but worth it.
Unfortunately I don't think it's possible for an app to be able to provide this functionality... it might be hidden in the Android Wear OS, though (most of it coming from Android itself), but just needs a trigger. My watch's carrier (Ting) supports hotspot functionality on everything, so it'd be supported by the carrier and everything, if it could just be activated...
I want to lose the smartphone - or at least move it to my wrist. Like many others, I have a Laptop PC, a tablet, a smartphone and bluetooth headsets. O, yes, and a heart pulse monitor chest strap (It is NOT a bra!). An Eco-system of things that, need to be programmed, configured, charged, connected and synched.
I would love to replace that with a combined PC tablet and a capable Smartwatch (and the headsets, of course).
Today, there is no-one to provide me with the components I need. The latest Smartwatches seem to be only lacking a little programming (HotSpot and fitness apps that synch across platforms) and battery capacity. Nearly there!

Once I got an LTE capable tablet, paying the extra but the cellular networks are financially penalizing tablets, for no valid reason other than greed. So that means I got phone SIMs, in fact two phone SIMS, an ATT and a T-Mobile. I currently have both in a dual-SIM phone. I also have a Truphone incoming-free and expensive data so if I do want to spend a brief time without a phone I just enable the watch SIM and get hit with say 15c of cost. That is tolerable.
The smartwatches are suffering from small battery so you cannot really make them replace the phone.
Whoops! Delete!
Great post. . . . .

Question Mi 11 Wifi Stopped Working

So as the title says, i woke up today and my Wifi isn't working for some reason. I try to turn it on but it wont even turn on. I am on MIUI 13 global and have been on it for quite sometime. Has anybody else encountered a similar issue?

Sorry to be bearer of bad news but it looks like your WiFi chip is fried which is a defect in most Mi 11's

why though, I've had it for quite some time now and I went to sleep one day and today it was like that with no reason whatsoever. I'll go to the service center ASAP. You think they can just fix the broken part or do they have to change multiple components or something?

If it's still in warranty you'll get a new phone otherwise board would be replaced....sadly this always how it happens either when you restart it or the other morning I really hope mine doesn't happen it's related to device being consistently overheated
Make sure you take action quick as wifi failure is a precursor to the main motherboard getting fried.
Source: personal experience. Just had my Mi 11 motherboard replaced under warranty. Luckily only lost one week's worth of data as I did a backup prior to the whole phone going kaput.
The issue seems to be more complex than what meets the eye. Qca6490 is both the wifi and Bluetooth 5.0 chipset, having it break would mean making both of them nonfunctional but we know that's not the case for Bluetooth.
I have a theory about what the issue is but I don't have enough data to confirm it. It would help me if you could download Device Info HW from PlayStore and get screenshot of SOC, SYSTEM and THERMAL tab(of the latter it would be better if the device was cooled down, data disabled. I would just need screens of modem-wifi-usr, the four voices starting with pm, wireless-therm, wifi-therm)

Are these taken when the phone was cooled down and data was either turned off or turned on by no more than a few seconds? In any case I would need the temps of pm8350, all the three voices and pm735, scroll down and you can find them easily
heh funny, exactly same thing happened to me two days go and not even on miui 13, i try to hard reset and update phone to miui 13 to see if its software issue but nope, so i have give phone to service under warranty second time, first time was display, really dissapointed with those issue on one year old flagship model

This is only based on a very small sample of devices analyzed and it may be not accurate. If people with this issue see this, I hope they can try to reach me out so we can get more device samples.
Okay, so this is what I found:
1. The Mi 11 that had their wifi fried under the system tab they all expose the Bluetooth voice. This is actually very odd because not all of them do which may indicates differenent revisions in either the wifi/bluetooth chip, motherboard or the SoC itself. I am not saying that all the ones that expose the Bluetooth voice will fry but, as it stands now, all the ones who had their wifi fried they all exposed the Bluetooth voice.
2. They are characterized by extremely high temperatures that not only interest the SoC but seems to be spread throughout the entire motherboard. What strikes me as extremely suspicious is the pm8350 temps aka the PMIC. They were quite high in all the samples with broken wifis. While this could be attributed to the fact the pm8350 chipsets are just behind the 888 which is known to be a hot SoC, I would like to focus on a particular data. We have seen similiar high PMIC+SoC combo temps in other devices such as the Poco X3 Pro which is known to have faulty PMIC issues that can cause hard bricks. It wouldn't surprise me if this was also the case, after all the PMIC is tasked with DVFS and a faulty one may not be scaling frequencies and voltages properly. That may be the cause of the unexplainable, increased heat that may damage a component or a series of electronical components around the wifi chipset itself.
3. All the devices that had their wifi fried seems to have broken before or around their first year of use. Again this is only based on a way too low sample of devices but as it stands now the chances of it breaking after the first year of use are very low. This particular detail made me think that there may have been a particular wifi firmware bug that triggers after a specific date, a sort of time bomb which isn't unheard of in softwares. Even though I am pretty positive this is not the case, trying to set your phone time to a day previous to the one where your wifi broke won't hurt just to check.

1- I am not sure I understand what you mean by bluetooth voice.
2- While am not a techie in this particular field and don't fully understand the scope of this point, I'd like to offer an uninformed opinion nonetheless based on my academic background.
Could it be that the heat that is spread throughout the motherboard has to do with a defective vapor chamber? It is a well-known fact that SD888 is a behemoth when it comes to its heat output, most companies address this by adding a vapor chamber in their phones to dissipate the heat and if I remember anything from my heat transfer classes, it stands to reason that a defective VC would lead to heat not dissipating properly, leading to the entire motherboard having issues and maybe the Wi-fi module is the weakest link in this chain?
However, this does not explain why the SD888 itself doesn't fry, maybe it has to do with its built in throttling mechanisms? I don't really game on my phone and the most I do is Spotify and maybe Netflix so I never really pushed it to test if i'd fry the SD888
3- The software bomb is an interesting but imo a very unlikely theory considering the heat signature output its most likely a physical hardware issue. I unfortunately cannot test the hypothesis as I handed in my phone to the MI service center today They said they'll let me know in a week so I'll keep y'all updated.
Lastly, I would like to add that this is my first flagship phone, I normally used midrange smartphones but this time I thought I'd get something stronger and to be fair I kind of regret going for this phone specifically because of this issue.
The device itself looks great, runs smoothly, has a fantastic display and the fast charging is out of this world, the fact that I got a free 80W wireless charger too makes it even more spectacular, it is a good phone.
However, this does not excuse the fact that it broke down less than a year from my buying it (I got it last August) and a good phone is as good as the experience it provides and recently, the MIUI 13 barebone update put a bitter taste in my mouth considering how incomplete it is, coupled with this catastrophic hardware failure, I cannot in good conscience recommend that anybody goes for a flagship phone from Xiaomi anytime soon.
Had this been a singular individual error, I could have chalked it down to a manufacturing issue with my particular unit which is excusable, but ever since I posted, I've done some research and a LOT of people have had this issue which means its negligence on Xiaomi's part to conduct a proper QC/QA testing before rolling out their devices and such laziness cannot be excused. Here's hoping I'll get my unit back soon
Had the same exact issue last week.. Wifi has been working fine for a year, and then all of a sudden it won't turn on.. Sent it to repair.. Hopefully I get a new device.
Okay, so I got my device back today, they had to change the entire board, the Wi-Fi is now functioning again. It is unfortunate that it broke down in the first place but at least they fixed it rather quickly. Hopefully it wont break down again in a few months time @[email protected]

Let's hope so but I would say that if when it is in idle, cooled and with only wifi turned on and the temps aren't above 34/35C then it should be fine
after install the last stable version of xiaomi.eu rom(xiaomi.eu_multi_MI11_V13.0.8.0.SKBCNXM) on my mi 11, Wi-Fi stoped to work after a day and Bluetooth and 4g/5g not working proprielly anymore. I reed about the hight heat of sd888 burning the Wi-Fi modem of mi 11 in Internet. Anyaway, I already buy another smartphone...
@hhwjthje , a new owner here. Would you please clarify what you meant by bluetooth voice. Couldn't find that on @M.Walaa screenshot and we know he had the fried module. I also don't seem to have a position for bluetooth voice.
Also not sure why you think idle temps matter, when it's clear prolonged load temps is what's causing the damage.
Had the same issue. Suddenly the WiFi stopped working after around 10 months of use. I am from Bangladesh and no-one can possibly fix this issue in here. Contacted the seller and they asked me to wait until Chinese borders fully opens. They will send the unit to China. I have been a big Xiaomi fan but the experience I am having with Mi11 is disastrous.
