Lost imei number and can't make calls, search for networks or anything - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hallo! I have a problem where mobile connection doesn't work. When I try to connect manually it doesn't work it just gives me an error with no details in it. This happened after attempt on installation of Mackay kernel it worked but I noticed the mobile connection was dead after a while I ran a restore but stil the same problem. The efs folder is empty with a lost+found folder there is also nothing in that folder. When I click manage mobile contract it tells me that I need to put the SIM card in but it is inserted. HELP!!

Anyone? Please help me!

Is your IMEI still intact or does it begin with something like 0044?
(If you don't know where to find it, go Settings -> About Device -> Status)

Did you ever do nandroid backup before? If yes, it contains also the efs folder.
BTW, if nandroid backup was done with different ROM, kernel or CWM version, don't try to restore it with Mackay kernel!!
You must flash as furst the same ROM and same kernel and use the same CWM recovery version to successfully restore your nandroid backup.
Otherwise, you could flash some stock firmware and imei usually returns then. People report that Gingerbread JVU usually restores the imei number quite regularly. If your current ROM uses different partitions than stock firmware, you may have to flash also the PIT file to make step back to stock with success, PIT file will do proper re-partition.
Otherwise, there are quite many threads about how to restore lost imei on the i9000. Take some time browsing around.

Great!
Now backup your whole efs folder with the terminal emulator or ADB and save it on several places (different folders on internal and external SD as well as on your PC). It is explained how to do it in my thread.
BTW, on this forum it is kind of nice to click on "thanks" button leftmost beyond all helpful posts.

I know about the thanks button. Just because I'm a new member doesn't mean I haven't been around on this site for quiet a while.
But how do you backup the EFS folder?

I've already written you: it was described in my newest thread, I've posted it also here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45551390#post45551390
The same commands like in the terminal emulator can be done by the ADB as well.
You can easily find good threads here on XDA forum how to backup & restore IMEI

But for great tipps you should not forget to "klick" the thanks button ...it doesn`t hurt :fingers-crossed::good::laugh:

[Q] [Slim Jelly Bean] No Service

Just Installed Slim Jelly Bean.
It's really nice and totally lag-free and I want to keep it but there's no service, I cannot make/receive calls and sms.
I'm sure I'm not the only one being affected by this issue and I suppose there is already a solution but I cannot find it anywhere.

maybe flashing your old modem back , might do it.
Check your imei number by typing *#06#.
If it is changed to something like 0049... your imei is gone.Only easiest fix is flashing 3files+pit rom will fix it

and then re-flash the custom rom back?
hey
first have u tried toggling aeroplane mode??
and if u have gone back to 2.3.6 check if everything is working there and then flash the rom again...Following the steps carefully...
1. flash back to stock with odin.
2. Notice how gingerbread had re created the imei.
3. Backup /efs
4. Go back to custom ROM
5. Only restore efs if needed.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
I used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546 for backing up efs
But now the program no longer runs, it does not recognize the phone with Jelly Bean
Any other methods of restoring efs with the img the program created?
EDIT:
Alright, restored back to Gingerbeard,
Used Nitrality, ES File Explorer Manager and backed up /efs folder
Re-flashed Slim ROM again and went to ClockworkMods recovery file manager, deleted the efs folder and copied the efs folder I had backed up,
Rebooted the phone and nothing changed, the result is the same, could it be that the rom does not support my country (Greece)?
bamp , sorry i really need a solution...
I had the same issue with SlimBean. My solution was to restore DarkyROM Ressurection with repartition via Odin, then flash CM9, then SlimBean.
Everything was working good after these steps.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
was this ever resolved? i had a similar situation after trying some early-early JBs. I tried several ways to restore /efs and none stuck across a reboot.
Also: when flashing any other rom or zipped kernel, did your installation abort? Absolutely anything hangs up on a /tmp/updater.sh, if I'm using CWM 3.* or 5.* I did manage to flash the latest Semaphore JB kernel by Heimdall; wiped everything and restore that nandroid, but then I was in a succession of reboots straight to recovery. Even on different kernels -- Devil3 with /datadata or back to Sema 2.7.4 to get back to stock or flash from there to THS CM9 nightly.
I'd guess these things are related, for me, or I just wrecked a whole lot and good.
Why cant I get this to work :-/

2) when did you flash the slim bean?
Solution:- Reason is you had Jumped from GB to JB (should be on ICS before JB), so now you need to
1) Download Root Explorer from Play Store and use it to
2) Search your internal SD card for sdcard/backup/efs
3) Copy nv_data.bin, nv_data.bin.md5 and nv.log paste them into /efs in your Phone memory
4) Reboot to get back your original IMEI
or
you can start from the beginning.. go back to GB 2.36 (use a JVU ROM + Root, upgrade to ICS CM 9 and than to CM10

ok so when I pasted the 2 data file into /efs on the phone memory I noticed there was already 2 in there so when I pasted it pasted them at nv_data-Copy.bin and nv_data.bin-Copy.md5. When I did *#06# my IMEI number is still blank?
Should I just do your second option, start from the beginning?
If thats the case im not sure where to get the right ROM + root from? Im really sorry if I am frustrating you :-/.

Nope, you need to overwrite those files, meaning delete the ones inside and paste the ones from the backup.

unknown imei and baseband version

Hi
I have imei and baseband unknown problem. I had Jelly bean stock rom 4.1.2 on my phone. Rooted it with this file (PhilZ-cwm6-XXLT5-OXX-5.03.0-signed) and I flashed my first rom (angry rom file [AROMA] ANGRY [JB] [v4.6] [XXLT5]). At first It seemed alright but it did not respond everytime I touched the screen, for example tapped Gnote app. After a day or so I tapped Gnote and the device went in a bootloop. Stopped with the Samsung logo. I could not get out of this bootloop. I read droid views (Things to Do Before and After Installing a Custom ROM + Troubleshooter) and tried different methods. The last way out of this was to reinstall stockware via odin. So I flashed ics stock for Nordic countries. Done this earier also with noe problems. After this I don t have any network. My imei and base band is gone. Before I went on with all of this I thougt I backed up my efs folder with es file explorer. I just found the efs folder and copied it from my internal memory to my externel sd card. But when I opened it it was empty. I also have a folder on my sd card called BACKUP EFS. It contained one tar file (efs_22Jul2013-2139.tar).I don’t know or remember how this BACK UP EFS folder got to my sd card.I tried to copy the empty efs folder from my sd card and on to my internal memory. I did not know if there was a special folder I should put this efs folder so I just copied it among the other folders in the internal memory. And then I copied the tar file from My BACK UP EFS folder. All done with es file explorer. I just got generic imei which probably is locked. So I still got no connection to my simcard and therefore no network. I just want to know if there is any hope here?
You see, about the phone and about the phone/status screenshoots: see Attached files
I have still got the serial number. But then again I don’t know if it has been altered.
And her You can see screenshoots of my external sd card folders: see Attached file
I have also checked my sim card on other phones. Then I get a connection/network. So I think the simcard is ok.
I have an imei number on a sticker behind the battery of the phone
Please need help !
put copy of tar file on internal sdcard, computer, disk then in bankvault. Rename EFS.tar and flash away with ktool (see play) and bobs your uncle, reboot and check again,

Thank You for responding to my thread!
Now I have copied the backup tar.file to the pc , ext. sd card and on the internal sd card( here I just clicked on gt-n7000 and then clicked on "phone" where You find alle the folders and files on the phone. I just copied it here amongst the folders and files. I renamed the file in forehand to EFS.tar. I downloaded ktool from play.
1) You Write "then in bankvault" . I dont know what you mean here
2) Just to be sure. now I just open the ktool app. click on "restore EFS from backup(Dangerous)" then i suppose I find and Select the EFS.tar file and click ok or something. Unce this is done. just tap the reboot button(in the app) and then check my imei again
Just want to get this right the first time.
thats it exactly
bankvault was a joke, but you got my point just somewhere safe off the phone.
let's hope its a working backup of your efs.

Hi
Thanks alot for helping. But it did not work. no contact With simcard no network. Then I probably have to send it to Samsung. Bought this phone a year ago. Do You think that I could get this on my warranty. got a New simcard (With bankid) 2 weeks ago. If i unroot it to ics Nordic country file With odin. Or is that impossible. My binary Counter is not activated so they cant see anything there. Or is this too obvious You think?
and one more thing. I was on jelly bean xxlt5 when i rooted and made the back up of the efs folder. Now when I tried this I am on ics . could this be the problem. Thus I should flash this Stock rom (N7000XXLT5_N7000OXXLT2_XEH) that i found on Google and try again?

Hi again
I downloaded android terminal emulator. I have granted su rights and open the app.
Ok I just typed:
su (enter)
echo -n ON > /efs/imei/keystr (enter) I stopped here when I got this Message NB! Here I get the following Message: cannot create /efs/imei/keystr: No such file or Directory 1
Maybe this has someting With the efs folder is not there. That I mentioned in the reply above
Thomas
command is
su, then enter, an enter after everyline. so type it like it is written, line for line, then reboot. Only needed if your phone doesnt prompt pin password on boot.
serial is no issue.
Copying efs folder, and putting it back does generally not work. Unless you experiment like restoring nv data bins. but then you need bak file and all with original emei which I suspect you dont have. Imei is issue but depends on country and provider blacklist. Only Samsung or cvxcvx can help you if thats the case.
your emei however was gone before the tar backup was made.
good luck sir this is all I googled for you
at own risk

Forget my inquiry I got my ansver !!!
Hi
Thank You for Your prievious help.
1) I had to get gingerbread 2.3.6 on my phone and full root before he could restore my imei. I did this and rooted With abyss kernel. The Method I used did the following. I got the triangle and binary Counter was set to 1. Now I have emei but I cant get my phone to update to jb because of this. Now I did not found out any other way to root gingerbread.
Then I flashed Gingerbread once again using Odin With gingerbread tar file, Nordic countries. Afterwards it restarted as it suppose to do. I tapped my sim pincode when promted. Now nothing happened to my phone other than that I lost my root. The sms and historik data is still there. but the triangle is gone but my binary Counter is still active, thus I cant get the Samsung jb update.
1) think I now should do a wipe data/ factory reset and then continued to 2)?
I wanted to use this Method to resett my binary Counter by using triangle away: video cursed4eva ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aa-t-8ypcYs ) written description ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114). But does only work With Stock kernel. I have rooted With abyss kernel which is custum if I am not wrong. This is the only way I know to root gingerbread on my Note.
I also have Stock firmware ics Nordic countries which I want to flash using Odin. And this I can root With philz kernel which is Stock I think. And then I can go on With resetting binary Counter(video above cursed4eva).
2) I want to get my Stock ics on my phone using odin.
NOW THE MAIN QESTION IS DO I HAVE TO ROOT GINGERBREAD WHITH ABYSS KERNEL AGAIN SO THAT I CAN FLASH STOCK ICS USING ODIN OR CAN I JUST FLASH ICS WITH ODIN WITHOUT A ROOT? OR SAID ANOTHER WAY DO I NEED ROOT TO FLASH ICS USING ODIN?
Hope You can answer me 1) and 2)

Hi
Thank You for responding to my thread .
(Ok I want to flash straight to jb but i dont find the Stock firmware for Nordic countries, so I use my ics firmware and update from there With Samsung update)
I did a factory resett on GB and then I flashed ics using odin(Odin3-v1.85). . when on Stock ICS kernel i did not do a wipe/faktory resett. I then went right to root my phone With philz kernel With this kernel on ext. sd card( Root_SuperSU.0.95.Only-signed ) using Method volum up , Power, home and then selected update from ext. sd card and so on. Now I tried to Connect to network and it does not Connect. i still have imei. when I go
into settings and mobile network. When I tap network operators it only finds network operators like , Telenor, Netcome, mobile Norway but not Onecall(which I am using). Then I tap Select automatically, I then get a Message in small letters on my screen saying; network registered (googled mobile norway + onecall, and it seems that Onecall is getting their net from Telenor and mobile norway, thats somehow I get the Message registered on network I think). So I am able to download the JB update from Samsung over wifi (I have downloaded but of course not run it?), but I dont get to Connect to mobilnetwork and surf With f.ex my net-browser.
What do I do now? Og back to GB and see If it function again? Or just go on to resett my binary Counter or do the jb update which I have downloaded and se if that Works.
and if I am to go on to resett my binary Counter using this Method safe. I am a littel scared that I have to brick my phone totally using this method, but then again I am getting tired and running out of options it seems.
Have to say loosing imei has been and still is a true nightmare. promblems doent seem to stop

last week, I upgraded a gifted i9000 for testing and fun purposes to CM10 from GB, and for that, I lose my IMEI (I have now the generic 0049990106400). I tried some methods to restore, but no one works.
The first of all I tried was back to GB. it didn't work. still 0049...
Then I tried to flash another GB using a pit file. it didn't work. still 0049...
Then I tried to flash a FROYO (JPU). it didn't work. still 0049...
Then I tried to wipe data / cache. it didn't work. still 0049...[/I
I didn't make a backup, but in my internal memory appeared a backup folder with an efs folder and nv_data file... I tried to restore using root explorer in a froyo version, checking the owner an permissions but it didn't work.
Trying coping only the nv_data, log and md5, but guess what?, didn't work.
Erase entire efs folder,
flash another FROYO checking "clear EFS" with odin... still 0049...
I back to GB but nothing happends...
Then I flash CM9 and CM10.2 but still the same. Can't restore the IMEI.
I checked the nv_data of the backup with an hex editor, and is filled (not 0's).
So... what can I do? I think I've readed every possible solution...
Any help is appreciate.
Thanks .

dont flash the gb again reset the ph. and try and flash the stock jb rom..
and then check the imei..
I'll post the links to restore asap.. but till then do this , as it tends to solve the issue..
And also check through file manager that is efs folder there.. it's in the phone ( root of phone )..and copy it to sdcard
open it and see that the imei is different or the same 1 as u said
do you have any backup..

Sorry, I think I haven't explain right.
Remember that the Galaxy S, the lastest stock rom by Samsung is a 2.3.6 JW6. The jb only exits thanks to CM10. I think the phone was on 2.2 when I bought it... But I've already try to flash a 2.2 but didn't worked. Should I flash the branded version?
I've copied the nv_data and open with an hex editor... But I cant understand anything. Lots of 00's and FF's and sometimes another string.
I have a backup that CM automatic did. But didn't work.

LOL you are in wrong topic.
There are no stock JB roms for the i9000, not even "I scream sand witch" for the i9000 was ever released.

when nothing works
Final Solution:- solve efs problems
When NOTHING works and its going to drive you nuts, just walk down to your nearest Phone repair shop, find out how much they will charge for using their Riffbox to edit/fix the IMEI, and it can be resolved in a few minutes .
on the otherhand, when phone functions without any network issues, having 0049 IMEI is not a problem that needs serious attention, as it is only your Identity and most people don't want an identity that can be used to track their movements

The problem is that I cannot do emergency calls with that imei... thats why I want to change it... I'm worried about if a day I need to make that call... I can not do it...
I've read your topic lots of times... but nothing works... I suppose I must surrender and get the phone to the shop... I was asking if there was some news methods or something...
The only one I can't understand was: "Replacing keystr file ( If missing) in efs > imei folder " I checked another two i9000 that has their IMEI, but they didn't has the file...

yup, Samsung had them in their earlier versions, but as people found ways to edit and alter the NV Data files, they also made it impossible to edit, most people had resolved this issue by using their efs backup files when they jump from Gingerbread to Jbean immediately after losing their network connection, but some have tried everything possible and NEVER resolved until its done with the box

Last week an XD paid 20 pounds in UK, after trying everything possible
initially he told me they asked for 30, and it was ridiculous in my view as it will only take a few minutes.

ok, lets give it one more try cause many do not understand the procedure needed to be done when copy paste is involved.
when using root explorer, you need to save after copy paste (means over write existing efs folder with backed up folder) and use exit in menu of root explorer before rebooting.

[Q] No network and CSC Unknown

Hi
I need some help. I flashed my i8190N with Maclaws CM11 KitKat ROM but have now lost network and sim and CSC data. My baseband is showing ok along with my IMEI.
I flashed back to stock ROM but still no network. I think I need the CSC file. My baseband is i8190NXXALL6 and im on H3G UK network. My wifes stock i8190N is on same network and her CSC is i8190NH3GALL2. Is there anyway I can pull a file from her phone to mine?
I have read on a couple of threads that Tyson can supply a modem file. Does this contain the CSC file that I need?
Thanks in advance
Matt

Yes, if you have the same device (I8190N) you could technically do a nandroid backup (excluding EFS if choosing TWRP full nandroid backup) on the 'working' device and restore this backup on the 'broken' one. But its highly advised to make a nandroid backup on the 'broken' one prior this (suggest using TWRP and taking a full nandroid backup - including EFS).

OK, I will try this later as wife now wants to use her phone. It is exactly the same phone, with just a different colour shell. Baseband and rom the same. I did just do a full nandroid backup f the working phone but I think I included EFS as well. I will try another one without EFS.
Will post how it goes.
Thanks again.

Its crucial that you only restore a backup from and to the same model, which in your case is i8190N. Furthermore be assured that you do not include EFS in your transfer attempt, as it contains IMEI, potential carrier lock and other vital device specific (unique) information. The recovery partition can be excluded too.

It worked. I backed up the working phone excluding the EFS and recovery folders using TWRP. Renamed the backup folder to match the non working device ID. Restored backup using TWRP on non working phone. Rebooted and everything now working. CSC data now showing correctly.
I also did a factory reset/wipe as it had all the other phones settings etc.
Can make calls etc now.
Thanks for your help.

How to back up my factory ROM?

Just got a new unit and would like to make a full backup of the factory ROM before proceeding to try out different ROMs. I did find an old thread from 2011 [HOW-TO]Create Custom ODIN Images for Backup/Restore but I'm not entirely sure if this is still accurate advice.
Also, it says that the device needs to be rooted in order to make the backups. My understanding is that if I root the system it will be detected by the system and OTA updating will then be disabled, which is not what I want. So my second question is: Is it really necessary to root and if so what is the best temporary method?

Small piece of advice my friend, be sure to include EFS in the backup to be on the safe side, also I suggest making a copy on a external SD or transferring to a PC
Why efs?

According to TWRP they say:
Some devices have “special partitions” like WiMAX, pds, efs, etc. These partitions almost never need to be included in a normal backup.

I already did one restore from my backup which had not included efs and it worked ok. What exactly is efs and why would we need it?

The EFS folder contains important information from the phone, like the IMEI for example, and if it gets erased by error it may affect your ability to successfully connect to a provider. Backups in TWRP will give you the option to backup important partitions one of those is the EFS folder, alternatively you may also use an application to make a backup (requires root) like EFS Manager(IMEI)-Note4 on the play store.
