[Solved] Internal - External SD Swap, in recovery? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, so this is abit of a head scratcher, but I have and old galaxy s not being used, problem is that internal sd is "burnt out" and no longer "mounts", was told It needs a new motherboard. My question is can I use an external card to mount and instal a rom to, bypassing the internal card altogether, is there a way to mount the external card in recovery and flash it?

Ive looked through all those, ive gotten somewhere but nothing close to a mounted sd. Ive formatted my external sd card with 2GB ext4 and 1.8 fat32 but the system doesn't use it as a replacement, and every time I flash it attempts to mount the internal sdcard and fails.
I think ill need some more detailed help, after I format the card, is the phone suppose to "automatically" use the external card, because every tut I saw just jumps to flashing and doesn't mention anything after formatting the card and inserting it.

With the link I gave you, I use the latest version of ROM 1.32 (only one that worked for me) and i partition the external card from the PC using SD adaptor and MiniTool Partition Wizard with 2GB EXT2 or EXT4 at the END of card and the rest of space at the beginning of card to FAT32. Make both partitions PRIMARY. put in phone flash modified ROM and fingers crossed.

AND IT WORKED! Once it was the partitions were in the wrong place and wearnt primaries. Thanks Guys!!!!

So Using both xsenman and RuffBuster suggestions I was able to get the card mounted.
Its quite simple once you get it.
1. Format an SD card (Post Suggests 16 gb, but I used a 4) using MiniTool Partition.
2.The First Partition is Primary 2gb ext4.
3. The Second is a Primary Fat32 with the rest of the space.
4. Download the Rom Provided here. http://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=520348 but since its in spanish, all you really need is http://www.mediafire.com/?mb5m89qwy6ma46y <-- From what I understood its a special rom that enables the use of the ext4 and fat32??
5.In odin put the corresponding files in each field.
I left the pit out because it just bricked my phone.
6. After its flashed the files, the phone should reboot into recovery and if all went well it will write the roms onto the external SD and you should have a working phone

After i've done this, how to install ICS or JB for next step? Please give me tutorial dude..

[MOD]App2SD Script! - Use 64GB microSD for App Data on Note 10.1!

Here's App2SD Script you can use to "swap" your internal storage and microSD card storage space.
For example, if you have a 16GB Note 10.1 and use 64GB microSD card, applying this script will allow you to get 64GB for your apps instead of just 16GB.
When you first use the script, you might see missing app data. To fix this, simply copy the whole contents of your internal storage to microSD card beforehand (or you can do it after too). You can also use Titanium Backup app to backup apps/app data before using the script then restore your apps with data.
Now, you can enjoy 64GB easily without paying for it!
To disable the script, you can simply erase the file below using ES File Explorer with Root Explorer/Mount enabled in settings:
/system/etc/init.d/11extsd2internalsd
OR you can also disable the script by leaving your microSD card out during boot then plug it back in after booting.
Requirements:
- You will need a rooted ROM/kernel with init.d support (OR you can probably use Script Manager app to run the script at boot, I haven't tried this but let me know, it should work just fine)
- Works on ALL stock or TouchWiz based ROMs
- Works for ALL Note 10.1 including N8000,N8010,N8013
To install:
- Simply flash the zip file in CWM Recovery or TWRP!

Quick question:
I'm new to the whole Android roothing thing. When you say I need a rooted rom, does that just mean I need to root my device? As in, if I root my device but continue running stock TouchWiz, can I enable this mod?
Yes it should work with any rooted on stock tomorrow with script manager although I haven't tried. If you have trouble just install my rom.

After I already returned my 16gb and ordered a 32gb..lmfao should be here Thurs.
Greatwork though..it'll likely come in handy as I have tons of big games. This is good to have for offline map use also.
wouldn't the microSD be slower than the internal storage? Basically if you swap them then it would also maybe take longer to save/load files etc?
How are your experiences with this, do you recognize any differences? Maybe also do some benchmark tests comparing pre swap and swaped versions of your note.
I think this would help me consider using your method maybe it would help also others who aren't sure about it yet.
great work though!
EDIT:
I also have a second question: What happens if you take out the sd card? wouldnt it take out the "system" as it is on the sdcard storage due to the swap?
Ah OK let me see if I get this. What your script does is make my tablet see the external SDCard as if it is the internal memory and vice versa? So if I run this I need to basically just copy everything on my internal card to my external card?
Is the internal memory faster than the external if I have a Class 6 SdCard for instance? Will this cause lag in launching Apps?
And i guess we need to flash your rom so we have unit.d support for this to work?

Yes exactly, I don't really see much lag even with a Class 2 but I do recommend higher Class 6 just in case. You need a ROM with init.d support or kernel yes OR you can try using Script Manager app, I heard it works but haven't tried it.
I have always used a2sd on my phone so I am quite used to this all. But now that I have this and am looking to get a 64gb card I am starting to wonder if there is anyway to still utalize the 16gb that the device would have since it would be writing 90% to the card. I know a tiny amount still goes to the internal but I wonder if there is any way to pick and choose when you have so much space on either side.

Hi zedomax!
Thank you! Your trick is great!
I have just ordered the 16 GB version of this tablet today, not sure if I made the right choice, but here in my country the only version available at present is the 16Gb, with option for 3G or not (which I choose to tick).
Well, I'd like to know just a couple of things, of which I'm shure you have the answer:
- Why does the photo in your first post only show 32GB internal memory? Shouldn't these be 64?
- Are there any downsides (read/write speed in particular) in using a microSD card formatted as FAT32, instead of exFAT?
Hi Can I just confirm this - does this mean the Internal Memory is off limits to the device or just mean it becomes like the Ext-Memory right now (you can put your own stuff on there, but the system doesn't store apps on there).
Really disappointed that Android decided to stop the Move To SD option in Android!
Work well with 32GB microSD class 10. However, Task Manager's and camera's storage don't know the MOD. May be they use different path. Otherwise, this is awesome.

[Help] Can't access sdcard from stock recovery.

Hey people!
I am kinda new to Android and have an I9070 with an official firmware (XXLQ4) I want to root it for tweaking purposes. But some problems came up:
Looks like my internal memory is located in /storage/sdcard, and the external memory is in /storage/extSdCard. However, when I boot into the stock recovery to flash a .zip, I select "apply update from external storage" and it shows me the contents of /sdcard.
Q1) Could you explain to me what these directories are?
Note that the SD card on this phone was previously on a SE x10 Mini Pro, which was rooted and running mini CM10, but I formatted the card before installing it on the I9070. There is still some folders in /sdcard is from my old phone, how can it still be there even after formatting the card?
Q2) How can I delete everything from the SD card, including the contents of the root?
In addition, I can't access my zip files since I have no way of navigating to /storage.
Q3) How can I access /storage/extSdCard so I can flash my .zip's?
Please tell me if I didn't explain my issue correctly, any help is appreciated!
Thanks.

See is there any "install". Update is for some prepared file for update, not for flashable zips I think. That is why you get nothing when you use it. I am on Touch CWM from new CoCore, and I can't tell you exact what is writtenf for that, here it is writtet "Install zip".

Backup your SD card files and re-partition it (external one). Guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SD_card_partitioning
DO NOT do any of that , just format your SD card using your phone , settings/sd card and phone storage/unmount sd card , after unmounting is done format your sd card and then reboot and you can access your sd card in recovery mode .
(T stands for thanks button )
One way to access sd card files is to use an sd card data recovery software, you may download from: sd card recovery tutorial
It helped me last time.

Formatting the card as FAT32 is a waste.
Put it in the device before you copy anything to it. That'll format it as exFAT and ensure the device can read it. Then it should be readable everywhere else.

Edit: here's an SD Card Benchmark
I'm seeing very poor R/W speeds from my card. It supposed to be a class 10, 64GB
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009SK57ZQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
In the Benchmark tool, it gets detected as the Internal SD card for some reason. But regardless, this card should be performing faster, IMHO.
5MB/s read and 4 MB/s write seems very slow. In fact, if I set my pictures to save to the SD card, it gives me a warning that my SD card is too slow.
I just tried formatting via the phone menu (Settings > Storage > Format SD Card), but still pretty slow.
Any thoughts on how to speed it up? Did I purchase a bum card?

Guide for those struggling with 'Adopt SD as Internal Storage' in Marshmallow

The first time you boot up your marshmallow device, you will receive a notification asking if you want to use your SD card as Internal or Storage. If you use storage its like any other external storage. But if you choose Internal, it will format your SD card to ext4 just like you would if you were to use Link2SD.
Now most of the apps will be stored on this SD card. However some won't and that's when you'll start running out of space. But that's not the case. Hidden inside is the option to move these apps to the SD card as well (along with the entire data and obb files). This is what you gotta do:
Go to Storage & USB
Go to Internal Storage
Go to Apps
Select the app
Select the option 'Change' and select your SD Card and then select Move from the 'Move Authenticator' and it's done!
Mind you, that the pre installed apps and the bloatware cannot be shifted this way. However it won't matter. you will still have around 900 MB free and even if the pre installed apps take up cache space there is plenty of space.
Enjoy!
Edit: Restart your phone after that otherwise the partition won't show up if you connect your phone to the PC.

So far as I understand, one can only move data to the internal memory and then migrate that to the ext4 partition using the migrate data option. So yes, one can't move large files in one go as the max amount of free internal memory is around 800 MB., and will have to do in batches..
Edit 1: I realize you don't have to do that in batches if you restart your phone after migrating your data to the SD Card. The phone shows the entire partition on the Computer after you restart. Clearly, there is some clarification that Google must come out on this or most users will be left confused and frustrated.
Migrate Data
What does the option 'migrate data' do? It says it will take 10 minutes and free up 5.8 gigs of sd space.

Don't migrate from SD card to Internal else your storage will be full. Migrate from internal to SD. I think yours has already migrated to SD.

Yep, I had to reset my phone after that.
Are you facing unnecessary restarts? It started after I moved some apps to SD card.

Nope, haven't faced a restart yet. However I moved WhatsApp to SD and after it got an update it was automatically moved back to internal causing it to lose its chat history. Moving it back to SD let me restore my last backup though.

Just faced this problem after updating whatsapp, messenger, docs. Had to restart to move it back to sd card. This feature is still buggy.

Yeah but I love how I don't have to wait for root to use Link2SD to install more Apps. It's more or less working quite well. Just a few annoyances like the migrate data issues. O too had to reset data after making that mistake.
Disregard my post. Found a solution.

After I upgrade to Marshmallow, I'd like to format my sd card, but suddenly i hit the "FORGET" button. can i restore the setting without any root or any methods?

Huawei Honor 4x Che2-L11 / App2SD / Link2SD / Marshmallow

Due to the insufficient storage I've tried to partition my SD card to move apps there. I know that I can move them through system, but using APP2SD gives even more space. I've used Partition Magic and built-in APP2SD partitioning tool. Without success. 2nd partition is unrecognisable by any of those apps (i've tried to format it as ext2, ext4, ext3 and f2fs). Because of this app is unable to create mount script on 2nd partition. I was reading that EMUI 4.0 (with Marshmallow) is not working with adaptable storage (just like AOSP or CM when you can switch SD card as internal memory) and you can move only particular apps. Are there any solutions for the insufficient storage working on EMUI (Marshmallow)?

Yes, there is a solution on MM B515. Link2SD didnt work, but Apps2SD does work. Just make sure root functions properly. You can check my post in Che-L11 q&a page for instructioslns on how to do it. This is mine now. 128gb microSDXC card, 8gb (8192mb) as Ext4, rest is ExFat. Ignore the Link2SD screenshot, I only use Link2SD for freezing stuffs.

Looks kinda complicated because of Magisk "root" issues. I wonder if this will work on b506 because this is the one I'm using (European variant).

b506? is it latest stock? i only upgraded to b510 via update.app then b515 via OTA update.zip this week, also installed magisk this week, even though that toggle doesnt seem to work, root works properly. Looks complicated, but once you do it, theres nothing to worry about. just make sure you partition the microsd properly. tell me, are you using 128gb now? its harder to do it for 128gb (ExFat issues) than for 32gb one (Fat32 is easier)

I'm using 64GB but I can switch to 16GB becasuse I currently don't have 32GB. B506 is the latest stock valid for my region (Eastern Europe) and I've downloaded it from Huawei Support website because for my region Marshmallow update wasn't distributed via OTA, later I've installed it through "force update".
So I did everything as in APP2SD tutorial - Partitioned my 64GB SD card as FAT32 (primary) than later I've separated from it a 16GB EXT (set as primary as well) partition (ext2, ext3, ext4 - I've tried with all of them). I tried to do it with partition minitool on Windows PC and built-in APP2SD partitioning tool. Without result. APP2SD is not detecting the EXT partition (it calls it 2nd partition), thus it's unable to create mount scripts there. So, after partitioning my SD Card, phone restarts and when I'm entering APP2SD it gives me and error about not detecting it. Do you think i should try the same with 16GB card? Can lack of Magisk may be the issue?

i think your root is ok. 64gb is fine. i think you did it like this:
1 fat32 of 32gb
2 ext4/ext3/ext2/f2fs of 16gb (you tried all, right)
3 the unallocated space
correct?
you cannot leave unallocated space, even though youre using fat32. app2sd / link2sd will not work. if you really want to try with the 16gb, its ok, as practice. just remember, only windos diskmgmt.msc will be able to format properly to ExFat. Fat32 on the other hand, no problems.

Almost. I've separated 16GB in ext filesystem from fat32 64GB card. I left no unallocated space. Only aaprox. 44GB of fat32 and 16GB of ext. Maybe Ill try exfat instead of fat32... Hmmm I'm running out of ideas. If not I'll try to split 16GB card in half
just by the way, if you are using minitool to partition, you need to make the fat32 partition first, then the ext4 partition with the unallocated space after you created the fat32 partition
and B506 is the first european MM, now they have B570
Ok, solved. Thank you. Trick with 2 partitions (ExFAT - 40 something gigs and Ext4 - 16 something) did the trick. Everything is working now.

how do you make a fat32 partition with 44gb size? i cant seem to do it, only ExFat works though. Fat32 cant be selected if the size is biggee than 32gb.
Sent from my Che2-L11 using Tapatalk
Mostly yes.
This is how I did it:
First i've cleared out my sd card totally, leaving only unallocated space. Then i've created 44gb fat32 partition using dskmgmt. Rest, about 16gb remained still unallocated. In the next step I've converted that 44gb fat32 to exfat in dskmgmt. I don't know why I couldn't format it directly to exfat and I had to do it through fat32 first. The 16gb of unallocated space was formated as ext4 with use of mini partitioning tool on my PC. Voila. Mounting script installed. I have about 20 additional apps installed and still about 2,5gb free internal space. Now I can call it a decent phone. Next step - installing XPOSED. I need it for Youtube background playback module.
EDIT: Chrome Beta ver. 55 have an feature to play YT videos in background. So I don't need XPOSED for now.
here is how i do it:
1. delete all partitions
2. split into 2 partitions, currently 109gb and 8gb (128gb microsdXC)
3. format 109gb into ExFat directly via diskmgmt.msc (diskmgmt.msc didnt allow me to pick Fat32)
4. let it finish, refresh disk list. confirm that 109gb is properly formatted into ExFat.
5. open minitool partition, format that 8gb into Ext4.
6. let it finish, refresh disk list using minitool, confirm that you only have 2 partitions and there are no unallocated space.
As usual, make sure that Ext4 as primary, bla3x all that partition stuff.
Why Ext4? Starting from ICS 4.0 /system/ is already in Ext4. Pick whatever format that you want. I just want to match it, make it the same is /system/ and /data/ and you know the rest.

I have ICS 4.0.4 and is not ext4.
I will not update my device, to a new, untill all manufacturers stops and forbid these horrible filesystem named extended v2/3/or4 that serious damage and destroys any kind of ssd cards.
What about suggest you, NTFS?

Exactly. But I had to format it through Fat32 to have exFat option available. Weird.
Dosen't matter, it's working now.

yeah, i dont get it though. why would you want to go to NTFS. You will need FUSE-3G kernel driver and stuff. NTFS is not open source. I have used Link2SD from old skool Xperia X8 stock (Ext2), X8 GingerDX (Ext3), Xperia Play (Ext3), then this honor 4x (Ext4). I havent tried F2fs yet. I dont think its supported in my stock b515. You only need to use a reliable microsd. Clearly NTFS destroys my microsd way faster than this ExFat Ext4 combo. i have tested my microsd using it as a win7 + xp + lubuntu multi installation boot card.

I'm on ext4
I only wanted to show that androed is installable in various filesystems yaffs, and now i am experiencing crazyness and fast performance with ntfs and modded link2sd. Not only 4.0.4 how our friend said, that 4.0.4 is only ext4
Comments apparted, i need to cut the ext4's hands creator. You can lpass me information about this horrible and repugnant person (s) ?
Thanx>

If ext4 or ext (any version), was a good filesystem, the Biggest company Samsung , had never invested Giant money to create a new substitute to tgis trash like f2fs or another fs.
Noh?
I don't understand much about this, but I am happy satisfied with what I have
NTFS is open source yes, according with this site:

Sorry, your informations are not corresponding to reality about ntfs on sd.
I modded link2sd to start ntfs sdext2 sdcard, with full app+data inside the sdext and today completed 20 days of usage, and i see a crazyness fast experience and performance that i never had on my 4 devices that i have someday, at least yaffs2 that is "the best filesystem" is comparable
