[Q] Note 3 and Music on an microSD Card Crash - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a weird problem that is happening with my new Note 3. It seems that if I power up the phone with a micro-sd card that has any MUSIC on it, the phone goes into a continuous reboot cycle where it gets to the lock screen and then reboots over and over again non-stop. Even taking out the battery for a while then reinserting doesn't work. However, if I take out the SD card everything is fine. Furthermore, if I put in any other micro-sd card from 16GB to 64Gb that does NOT have any music on it, everything works fine even if it contains other media such as video. If I put a different micro-sd card from the original that has music on it, it goes through the same reboot cycle. Note that if I boot up without the card, and THEN put the card in, everything also works fine - so it's just something with the initial boot sequence. I'm using the stock USA ATT Note 3 (not rooted or anything else done).
I do believe this is a software and not hardware issues. The music was loaded from iTunes using iSyncr in both cards I tried. I will try to copy / paste over music later (not home now) and see if that makes any difference, but in the interim I'm wondering if anyone here ever experienced anything like this or are NOT having problems with music on a micro-sd card. All of the micro-sd cards I am trying are Sandisk 64GB Class 10 - even the ones that DO work fine. The difference is solely seems to be the content on them.
Any ideas?

Have you tried reformatting the card? (Copy the contents off 1st of course)

I have a couple thousand songs on my SanDisk microSD card and I haven't had any issues.
Could be a bad file during the transfer causing issues. Let us know how it turns out when you take the songs and transfer them back. I would do a little at a time and reboot just to test

My AT&T Note 3 doesn't even recognize a 2GB and a 32GB MicroSD card. Any Thoughts anyone? I think I may have a defective device. AT&T model.
Thoughts? It doesn't see the card as an option to format or mount in the storage settings and I formatted it on my pc just fine. Both FAT32 and NTSF formats. Brand new card (32GB) and the 2GB is just an older card I ha lying around. Neither one is recognized.

I had the same problem using a Samsung 64 gb card. To solve the problem I removed the card, left the back cover off, rebooted the phone and inserted the card while the phone was on. I haven't had the problem reoccur.
Although you may want to have a backup of your card before you try the above.

Yes - If you read my original post, I indicated this does work. HOWEVER, if I then reboot AGAIN with that card in, I again get the reboot cycle over and over unless until I again remove the card, boot back up, and reinsert the card again. Does this happen to you?
To test what's going on, I started with a completely new empty 64GB micro-sd card (Sandisk Class 10), which I inserted with no booting isues. Then I began doing a simple copy / past of music onto the card a little at a time and then reinserted and re-booted. Everything was fine for awhile, and then it began have the rebooting issue after loading a certain amount of music. Thinking it may be a bad file or something. I wiped the card again and did the same thing with completely different music files, which again was fine for a while until a loaded a number of songs and it happened again. Note that NONE of the rebooting isues occur until I trigger an initial reboot manually (i.e. with power off or restart).
So now I'm thinking that this is some type of issue with the number of song files loaded on the micro-sd card. At the time when the reboot issues because, I had probably loaded about 4000 - 5000 music files (maybe 25-30 GB). I have about 13,000 files that I normally load on the card (around 60 GB at 128 kpbs). 95% are AAC files purchased from iTunes (all without any DRM). Android does a mediascan at boot-up time so maybe there is an issue with Android's media scan in 4.3. Note that I did NOT have this issue on my Note 2 running 4.2.1 (I think)
So for those with OR without the issue that have music on there, do you know how many song files approx you have and of what type?

After performing the steps I described I have not had the problem occur, even through many reboots.
I have 2000 music files, most are in FLAC format, occupying approximately 58 gb.

Thanks.
Is anyone else that has 5000 or more songs on their SD card either experiencing (or not experiencing) the boot up problem?

The reboot cycle problem is bigger than having music files on your sd card. I recommend you check out this thread:

Possible workaround
I may have stumbled upon a workaround for the continuous boot problem. It seems that if you turn-off 'Always allow scanning' in the advanced Wi-fi settings then the problem will not occur. Your mileage may vary.
Follow these steps:
1. If your Galaxy Note 3 is in a continuous boot cycle or suffers from it then remove the back cover and remove the battery. Leave the back cover off.
2. Remove the SD card.
3. Insert the battery and boot. Wait for the device to fully boot.
4. Go to Menu -> System Settings -> Wi-Fi -> Menu -> Advanced
5. Uncheck 'Always allow scanning'
6. Use back key until you're home.
7. Turn off the device.
8. Insert the SD card.
9. Attach the back cover.
10. Turn the device on.
To confirm, I tried booting the device three times with the 'Always allow scanning' Wi-Fi setting checked and it ended up in a continuous boot cycle. With the 'Always allow scanning' Wi-Fi setting unchecked the device boots fine every time.

What if we don't have a SD card at all? Has this issue got anything to do with the SD card?

In my case, and from what was reported here by other posters and the original poster, the issue seems to be related to having a 64 gb card installed.
If I don't have the 64gb card installed then the device always boots fine regardless of the 'Always allow scanning' Wi-Fi setting. I do not know if others that have posted here have their device exhibit the problem without the 64 gb card installed. I can only infer from others posts that the problem does not occur on their device if the card is not installed, regardless of the aforementioned Wi-Fi setting.
Hence, if your device is going into a cyclical boot without the card, then the problem with your device may be due to other factors.

SD Card Corruption with Nexus One (has happened twice)

Twice in the last two months my 16 GB Class 6 AData microSDHC memory card has popped up as being "corrupt" and needed reformatting after powering back up from reboot on my Nexus One.
The first time happened on CM 5.0.3.1, the second time was with CM 5.0.4.1 with the UV kernel. Both times, data could not be read either through the N1, my old G1, or my friend's Droid. Thus a reformat was required and data loss ensued.
Anyone else experiencing occasional data corruption on their SD card? Another friend had it happen to his G1 with an 8 GB microSDHC memory card recently, running the latest CM for the G1, also on reboot and battery swap.
Is there a common thread here? Could it be HTC hardware-related? CM software-related? Just coincidentally two bad memory cards? Me using chinese replacement batteries when swapping out? The UV kernel? Not trying to point fingers or throw stones, just trying to get to the bottom of this...just lost some great pics of a recent vacation I just got back from. Suggestions or hints are welcome!
TIA!
this has happened to me a few times but I was still able to get my data through amon-ra recovery. I think it have something to do with an improper dismount of the card.
I'm curious, what brand of memory were your friends using?
I actually had this happen when my n1 was still stock (16gb class6 card)
I put the sd card in a card reader on my pc, everything was intact so I backed it up, reformatted and still had the n1 report it was corrupt. I ended up having to shut down, remove card, boot up w/o a sd card in, then with the sd card back in I never had the problem again
I know I did a full format the very first time, that 2nd time I had done a quick format. I've done a format recently also via amonra for ext partition and still no problems.
I happend to me few weeks ago. After turned it on ... I couldn't do anything because the screen was black and any key or type of touch was useful ... so I removed the battery and at the next start the SD wasn't readable anymore!
sry 4 my bad english!
erikikaz:
i'm running a 16 GD Class 6 AData memcard in my N1, my friend is running an 8 GB class 6 SanDisk memcard in his G1. Neither of us is running Apps2SD or anything weird.
glad to see i'm not the only one with this issue. was gonna buy a new 16 GB card but saw an article yesterday that sandisk is coming out with a 32 GB class 6 sdhc card in a month so i'll just wait for that one.
Same here
Same thing has happened three times on my Sandisk 16gb. I am running stock everything on nexus..nothing funky app wise.
After the first time it happened I replaced the sd card. It still happens. I have never been able to fix the card other than reformating. Chkdsk /f on win7 gets to 98% then throws an i/o error.
There is something majorly wrong. It seems that it happens in all android phones from time to time not just the nexus one. The consensus online seems to be that it is a mount/dismount issue that corrupts the card. I never mounted or dismounted the card at all with PC and it still happens so not sure what else it could be.
Do you think it is a phone hardware issue that would resolve with a new handset?
Has this ever happened to anybody using the standard 4GB card?
Where did you purchase your micro SD cards? There are a lot of fake/faulty cards being sold. I bought a fake one (unknowingly, obviously) and it kept getting corrupted until I tested it properly using h2testw.
I have the same problem on my nexus! I use an LG 16GB Card and CyanogenMod-5.0.5.3-N1! Any way of recovering the data without amon-ra?

roman

+1 Make sure you dismount from computer first...otherwise this problem will pop up again...and may not be correctable next time. (There's a reason why the phone asks you to properly dismount from computer first)
no **** my n1 has the error message damaged sd card. restarted the phone a couple times and same message. what should i do? i see peoples solutions on this thread but idk where to start. i have a rooted n1 running cyan 5053 with apps2sd
I have had this problem a couple of times too, the latest being this morning
I have a stock N1 with a 16GB Sandisk card. The first time this happened, i went to use the camera and it said insert SD card, even though there was one there, I rebooted the phone and then got the Damaged SD card message.
This morning I was on the train, had been using the phone to read the news earlier with no problems, I got it out of my pocket and screen was black. and the phone completely unresponsive. Removed and replaced battery, booted up and got the Damaged sd card message again.
Both times I have been able to recover most of my files by putting the card in a PC, the first time I found that a couple of my photos were corrupted and unrecoverable, indicating that possibly it was the camera app that may have caused the issue the first time.
This time though, I found that some of my music tracks were corrupted along with one of my videos, and also a directory on the SD called LOST.DIR. Everything else was fine.
Not sure why only these files were affected, as I was not listening to music or watching any videos, so I dont see why the nexus one should have been accessing those parts of the card when it corrupted.
I could not delete the corrupted files, even on my PC, accessing them causes the PC to lock up. The only way to get card working again seems to be a format.
If only the format would work!
Regards,
Roman
Just happened to me as well. Genuine 8gb Sandisk, class 4.
After a reboot Nexus reports corrupted card. It really seems corrupted, I'm unable to read it in a PC or anything else:
[ 1042.673542] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
[ 1042.673551] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Sense Key : Medium Error [current]
[ 1042.673561] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Add. Sense: Unrecovered read error
[ 1042.673571] end_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 10248
I'm using CM 5.0.4.1 with UV kernel.
It's happened to me, even using the "safely remove hardware" function on the pc. i started just using the unmount on the phone which seemed less problematic.
Yep...add me to the list. Running stock N1 was playing music when it ocurred it started skipping through the tracks fast right before it stopped. It has affected/removed all my pics and left the music.
I'm with you all:
2 times on my Motorola Milestone, using a 16GB class 4 "unbranded" card
3 times on my Nexus, using that same 16GB class 4 card.
2 times on my Nexus, with a 16GB class 6 SanDisk card.
Most times, the data has been available by mounting the card into a PC or Mac directly, though my Mac has seen the card as "read-only" in these cases.
I seem to have this problem after mounting the card onto my work PC, though I don't often do that. I mostly use ADB to copy files. Maybe it is linked to leaving the debugging interface up all the time? I do that and I'm sure that most of you do as well...
Me too
I am using FRF91 MRCr21 and I am on a 800mv 070810 .35 rc4 kernel. Newest 5.00.08.04 radio.
Twice now after using quickboot my phone has reported my SD card damaged and it says I will have to reformat. It is a 8gb class 2 sandisk, real. One time I used quickboot to enter recovery mode and the other was only to reboot the phone. Has anyone else had this problem? What is the best fix? Both times I rebooted my phone was stable. I wasn't downloading or installing anything. Thanks!
My phone can't read the card. If I pull the card and put it directly in my computer it won't read either. Both OS can't read the file system and want me to reformat.
Neither happened due to not dismounting. Anyone correlate the problem with quickboot?
have had zero luck with adata 16GB classs 6 cards. i have gone through 2 of them however their 8 GB card has been awesome
Just had this with a Sandisk 16GB Class 2 card. Inserted into card reader, copied something, popped it back into the phone, corrupt card message. Even the computer says I have to format it.

HELP: Formatting a new SD for use with SGS?

Do you have to format a new SD card (Sandisk 16 Gb class2) in any special way before using it?
My brother is testing my new SGS for me (I live in Brazil, he is in USA), and he is reporting that the phone becomes SLOW with just the new card inserted, and sometimes it stops and says "preparing mass storage" or something.
Nothing copied or running on the card yet. Blank.
Stock JFB firmware.
Please help me. Is this possibly a hw problem with my phone?
I have just one more day left to return it.
Thanks,
Paulo
No. That is normal. Everytime you cold start/insert card or unmount from desktop it does a media scan to cache and thumbnail your media for use in Gallery or any media app. In the end it saves time as its all indexed. It gets annoying yes but without it your system would either not work or be slower. Its also on every android device.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
But please note the the card is completely new and blank.
How much time should my phone be doing this "indexing"?
Shouldn't it be only once just after I insert the card and then stop?
It appeard that it is doing this indefnitely...
Please help.
Thanks,
Paulo
What I mean is that my brother is reporting that the phone is slower not just when you isert the card, but forever.
And it keeps saying "scanning for new media" every now and then.
It should have stopped indexing by now, shoudn't it?
Thanks.
It will scan the card every single time you reboot the phone or unmount/remount the card. For example when connecting the phone to your pc for uploading new files.

[Q] sandisk ultra microsdhc uhs-I (32GB) heats up my d410 ! Solution???

I had recently opened a thread here asking the possible cause for the heating up of my phone. After getting it diagnosed at the local service center, I discovered that my 32 GB Sandisk class 10 microsd card is the culprit that is causing the heat-up. Unseating my microsd card from my phone does the following things/improvements:
1. Phone doesn't heatup (isn't prominent with back cover) while playing hd videos & while browsing data
2. Battery lasts longer
After I insert the microsd card, I would notice that my phone would normally heat up below the rear camera & below the ear-piece, as it would previously. I have witnessed my phone getting hot upto 47 °C (under mild to moderate usage) ! That's unbearable.
Possible causes
1. Is the SD card defective ? Please note that... I have noticed this exact issue on two different 32 GB Sandisk Class-10 cards which I own. The local service center told me that your sd card might have short-circuited & would be causing the heat-up. They couldn't test it since I hadn't take it there.
2. Is the android indexing service running constantly & triggering the heat up?
Some Additional Info:
1. Most of the data in my sd card are multimedia files/ android apks
2. while taking out the concerned card from it's original adapter/reader(inserted in my pc) , after copying, say 6-7GB of data, I had also witnessed it getting really warm. Is this normal ?
3. A similar concern here can also give you a better idea
Can anybody please confirm & tell if this is a known issue with large capacity sandisk high capacity cards (16GB>) so that I can switch to a sd card of a different make that most of you use & recommend or should i purchased a lower capacity sdcard?
Any other workaround that will likely work (formatting the card on the phone instead of PC/ using custom rom)

Some more info please.
1. What if SD card is freshly formated. (not quick format). An empty SD card still causes it?
2. Did you install any software like Xposed module or SD mount? Or have you swapped internal mem for SD card? (Some do it)
3. Does stock ROM also cause it?
4. Use move to phone option in the app. Move media to internal memory. Play it. Still heat?
I own 16 GB Trascend. No issue.

thank u for taking the time to write back Coming to your questions, I will answer them in the order they are numbered
1. I haven't tried inserting an empty SD card & check if this issue comes up
2. No I don't have any xposed module installed but I do have an app installed called "folder mount" but I have disabled it from starting up automatically (on boot/ when network connectivity changes)
3. Ya..all this I have witnessed on stock v10d ROM & I haven't installed any custom rom on my current phone yet.
4. I will try doing that but that won't be a fix because my video library won't fit in there
I would like to also add here that a day before I took my phone to the service centre, I was at a friend's house where he had deliberately put his 16 GB microsd card (Transcend Class 10, in this case) so that we could check if the phone heated up & surprisingly IT DIDN'T !
We had tried playing a full hd vid in mx player at full volume & brightness for 4-7 mins & there was no sign of heating.
Did this happen because the card was of 16 GB & had considerably less videos/ because card was of different make?
I don't have own a 16GB card personally since my previous phone was a moto g & before that I owned a P500 (optimus one) in which I put a Transcend 8GB class IV card.

Still cant know if its a software problem or a hardware problem until you test all of the above.
Does folder mount make your SDcard the internal memory?
Internal memory is heavily accessed by all Apps.
A 32 gb sd card will have twice the address length compared to a 16GB. At high speeds and at a high access rate, it may lead to a problem.
If you did swap SD an internal storage functions, you should consider switching back.
SD fix in Xposed module gives you full access to SD card. I think it is better than folder mount.
I do not own any 32 GB card of any company and hence cannot comment on hardware.

no it doesn't! it just makes mounts the app data so that the respective app understands it's in the internal memory. I haven't installed that xposed module for swapping external sd as internal memory yet but yes..I do have full write access to my sd card by installing SDfix app from playstore.
I think, I should insert a freshly formatted sd card (as u recommended), move current data to internal memory, test & then report here. Let me see how it goes.

Yes while playing video on YouTube, playing games, it heats up and drain battery very quickly. Right now i m traveling so cannot do any sort of testing. But during travel, within 2 hrs of music listening using ear phones, it drained 10% battery.

Micro sdcard phantom wiped/erased

What a nightmare! I grabbed my Tab S 10.5 this morning and the stupid thing was showing there was nothing on my sdcard at all! All my apps that used it are now complaining and have no data at all. What a nightmare. The most annoying thing is that it's a Samsung branded micro sdcard to boot. Come on man!!! Some top of the line tablet this is!
Update:
Well, I pulled the micro sdcard out of the Tab S and put it in my PC and the data is still on it. So, the Tab S is apparently just not reading it. The only thing I can think of is backing it up on my PC and putting it back in the Tablet and reformatting it, then putting it back in the PC to restore the data. WASTE OF TIME for a so called Top of the Line Tab from Samsung!
Update 2:
Well, I put it back in the Tab S and it still wasn't reading it. So, I went to Settings/General/Storage and selected 'Unmount SD card'. Then I pulled it and put it back in the Tab S and it is now reading the thing. I imagine that's the trick if the micro sdcard is showing nothing on it all of a sudden. Strange behavior for a top of the line tablet...Anyway, problem averted...

Is it still working for you? I ask as I had the same issue with a Tab S 8.4 and a Samsung EVO 64GB card, and tried your solution several times, but it did no good whatsoever. After a week or so I gave up and put in an old Sandisk 16GB card and it has worked flawlessly. However, it is full and I could do with the space of the 64GB card.
I have the same issue with my Tab S 10.5. I have a 32 Gig Sandisk Ultra and it randomly does the same thing where it shows no data. The fix for me is to just reboot my tablet and it usually works for a few days but it is a repeating problem for me. I agree this is very frustrating to have a flagship device that has such issues with SD cards. FYI I have used that card in several other devices with no issues what so ever. I am holding out hope that a software update may fix the issue? Maybe Lollipop?

Nope. It finally just completely died. I'm using a Sandisk now.

Question New 512gb micro sd card ''issue with card'' and needs to be formatted after inserting, does not happen on Galaxy S8+

I recently bought a San Disk 512gb micro sd and while it works perfectly fine since I've inserted it I wanted to transfer files without my phone being plugged to the pc so I dismounted the card and directly transferred files from the pc. After finishing up I inserted it back but to my dismay it I get the error message ''Issue with SanDisk SD card'' and wants to format it. The card was with the stock exfat format when it arrived and worked fine. I plugged the card back to the pc, did the windows repair and it couldn't find anything defective. I inserted the card back and it still didn't work. I then tried it on my S8+ and it works flawlessly there. And for some reason after inserting it back to the Note 10 pro it was suddenly working and I thought this problem might be gone but today I was not able to put some files via usb connection to my phone for some reason and did it again directly over the micro sd card and inserting it back the same issue occurs, only on the Redmi note 10 pro. No issues at all with the S8+. But this time I couldn't get it working on the Note 10 pro. I then reformatted it via I also tried a 64gb micro sd in both phones and that seems to works fine, no issues. I then used ''MiniTool Partition Wizard'' on my pc to format the micro sd and in my first test it seems to work in the Note 10 pro but after transferring my files back the issue occurs again and it does not work. Any idea what to do? I'm very annoyed with this and this issue is driving me mad and steals a lot of time.
Now I'm trying it for the last time, directly formatted it via the phone as a media storage, safely ejected it and started the copy process which will take a couple of hours (200gb). Is there anything I should know? This feels like a issue with the software/phone.
Edit:
Yep, this is a bug in the Note 10 pro (maybe only with bigger cards?) and you can circumvent in by renaming specific folders which causes conflicts if you try to mount your sd card.
I'm not sure if all these 4 cause this but when I've renamed every folder and the sd card mounted successfully.
The new 4 folders created (Pictures, Music, Movies, Android) might caused some kind of conflict for whatever reason. I think the issue is with the music folder, its the only folder of these specific ones I had filled with a lot of data, I already deleted the Android folder in a previous attempt but did not guess any other could cause such a major issue with mounting. Weird, but man I'm glad this is over.
Edit: Does not seem to work after a update again and this time renaming/deleting those folders does not do the trick. Now I'm stuck again without a way to fix this, any Samsung device my family members have have no issues mounting the card except my Redmi Note 10 pro. This is a massive problem for anyone using a big exfat micro sd card.
I had this same issue and it was not ROM dependent. I have a 1TB MicroSD card from Sandisk. It would normally go from wanting me to format to eventually not asking and would pop up from time to time. It stopped when I switched to EliteROM. But as stated, it is random. I don't know why it happens. But once it shows up eventually, I delete every folder it created and leave my defaults. Don't format it. It will just do the same and you would have lost time and files for nothing.
In a nutshell, it is just a bug that goes away on its own.
