Nokia Lumia 521 - can i swap WP8 for Android OS? - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So the wifey accidentally DESTROYED her Galaxy S2 (tmobile). She completely underutilized the phones capabilities, basically just using it for FB and to play Candy Crush Saga. Well, the phone was past warranty so i got her a cute Nokia Lumia 521 from ebay.
She HATES it...No Candy Crush! The sky is falling!
I wanna learn everything that I can about modifying and technology...and maybe look like a hero at the same time.
So what I am asking is:
Can I format/erase the 521 and install an Android OS (or Android stock based ROM) onto the Nokia Lumia 521?
If not, why not?
And could someone point me in the direction of some resources that could help me to learn how to construct something from the "ground up". Should I start by learning everything about linux code? And maybe there is another way...She hates the WP8 layout, but would be content if she had Candy Crush. Is there a way to translate the game so that it could be played on microsofts mobile OS?
ANY kind of knowledge or imput would be immensely appreciated and not lost on me....consider it paying it forward
Thanks

You can't install Android on a Nokia Lumia 521 basically because three reasons:
1.- The phone basic firmware is EFI based and Android doesn't run on EFI based systems
2.- Since the phone is based on EFI, the OS that is installed must have a valid signature in order to boot and right now, only Windows Phone 8 has the required signatures to tell the bootloader that it is "safe" to boot the system.
3.- Even if you manage to change the EFI based bootloader and get Android to boot (which is extremely unlikely), there's the drivers problem. Since Windows Phone is a closed platform, all the drivers are closed source and most of the hardware used in Lumia phones is specific for Windows Phone in e sense that it runs smoothly only on that platform. You can't expect to have the same performance of 512 MB of RAM in Windows Phone than in Android: in Android, 512 MB makes the phone laggy for many tasks, as Android is poorly optimized.
I hope that answers your question.

thanks so much for your prompt response. It is great that there are people out there willing to share any bit of knowledge. I guess what I am looking for is a phone(remote if you will) that can integrate everything in our lives. im going to ATTEMPT to learn everything that i can...that's why i was wondering about switching her phone to android. WP8 really gives you no sense of control. I don't like only being able to do what is on the surface. i have an old Verizon HTC Thunderbolt that I wanted to enable for use with our Tmobile account but that keeps getting shot down too. No SIM so i cant update Android so that she could play Candy Crush on that device...so im just gonna research and get some experience by rooting and updating to JB or a stock based ROM.
Thanks again

Well, over at Windows Phone Central, they had news that MS was looking with HTC to have dual-boot phones with Windows Phone and Android on the same device. I don't remember when that was reported though.

i don't think they want to work on actually dual boot but i think they want to do something like Samsung Ativ Q
an emulator of android runs under windows phone. And windows phone will able to run android apps!
dual boot needs an internal storage over 32 GB that most phones doesn't have

Sigh... Yet again
1) WRONG THREAD.. You're asking a question so your question should be placed in the Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting section
2) Search before making duplicate threads... You will get results that return the same exact answer. NO.

I remember the old HTC HD2 was only released on windows mobile. But thanks to the hackers and tinkerers out there people were able to load android on it. Also they have been able to get multiple OS on it like Ubuntu.

Windows Mobile devices are different they are based on Windows CE but WP8 is based on Win NT .
Maybe we will be able to run Android on SD with something like HARET but the most important thing is that we have to first Interop Unlock WP8 devices then we will able to use more Capabilities maybe we can do something.*Maybe*

There are no "engineering ROMs" in the meaning you're talking about - they only differ by Microsoft packages. Nokia turns devices into R&D the other way.

look at the picture , can you download it ?
the rom's are of course "online" but this doesn't mean you and me can download them.
next is that you can't get them on the phones (other EFI)
and it will after download and flash on a dev phone download the dev packages from MS servers

this is from the downloaded rom ( i just download the rom ) .. the one shown above ..
i dont have the same device else i would have downloading this rom onto my device and could have tried.
just to add i have a rm-937 device but im using a rom not meant for my product code.
and if you have the PRODUCT CODE known for a particular device chances are that you might be able to download them.
from the developer rom .. these files ( hope they will be useful for someone )

This ROM isn't anyhow different from "normal" ROMs. It is the ROM installed on devices given away on different shows/events. It doesn't provide any additional features/capabilities.

I'm sure it will be possible but not officially.
Some members have used it successfully but only at 25MB expenses. So if you have few memory available you won't be able to try it.
With ARM knowledge and SPL tweaking i believe that it will be possible to write the OS to the DOC chip and have SPL load it directly (now it's being called from RAM)
cheers
First we need for it to be officially released, because drivers for our mobile phones are missing...
Why can't drivers be either made or found elsewhere? It is linux based, and therefore probably already has a driver out there for most of the stuff in it. Or I am sure there are some good driver hackers here that can reverse engineer the windows drivers for all the system calls that are passed onto the hardware.

Just install Windows XP in a virtual machine and pass through the USB device. You might have some luck with wine. I haven't tried.
I've tried Wine, wouldn't set up properly.
Would I need to have Windows or a special version to use a VM?
I've got a spare hard drive, I would just install Windows on that if I had a copy.

All I see in that .zip file is a Windows batch file, a few .exe and .dlls and a load of zip files to be flashed onto the device.
Also, back in the days when this thread was first created and the question asked, all we had was v1.0 - which was an unsecure boot, a couple of old kernels and superuser - no way at all to flash KDZs with it.
I don't want to get into an argument with you, but it really does help if you sometimes check back on the dates that things were posted before criticising someone.
This was the exact menu structure from the version available at the time;-
1- Root
2- Unlock Bootloader (For JB EUR-xxx Devices)
3- Flash TWRP Recovery
4- Flash Un-Secure Boot
5- Flash Secure (Original) Boot
6- Flash CWM Touch Recovery
7- Flash Original Recovery
8- Flash Gmod-Boot-Menu (Not Recommended In This State!)
9- Flash Kernel
x- Exit

Ah. And, forgive me the stupid remark: What was the topic of this thread? What did the OP want to achieve?
Besides, same issue here. I'd really like to put a custom ROM on my O4X. And to have CWM on it. But "Justin Case" I need a way to flash the original .kdz images on Linux. And no, don't start with things like Wine or VMs. It's stupid enough that one has to buy a Windoze license to maintain an Android device. Here is M$ free zone, the only Windows I have are for light and fresh air.

first of all, the way mentioned to flash kdz is through the lg support center. did u see any lg support center for linux based os ? so u cant complain here for the windows its lg fault !!!
so for the lg support center to work, u need wine or virtual machine to run windows.
now if there is another way to flash .kdz in linux based os, i'd wish to know that way too.
<<EDIT>> and forgot to mention, since u get all the way and unlock the bootloader, u dont really need to find a way to flash kdz. the worst case scenario is if u cant boot and cant go into recovery. u can just re-flash the recovery which is about 4 seconds work. its lame to go flash back all the stock recovery and rom if u gonna go again for a custom.
kessaras, I didn't blame the community. My point was just the question being for a way to flash .kdz using Linux, and the recommended tool didn't cover that at all. But don't we start a flame war here: I fully agree with you it's totally LG's fault. I wonder why most (not all!) manufacturers come up with their own proprietary formats, which all require OS dependent tools to be managed in an official way – while it couldn't be too complicated to support the update.zip variant, which would be completely OS independent (and work wonderfully, as all my tablets prove with stock support).
Re-flashing the stock ROM is still required if you need to send your device for service, and for that we need a way to flash .kdz. So let's get back to that topic

Depending on the Linux distribution, and the architecture of the system (64bit is tricky), you might have to look at the errors, if any, when running it from a terminal. I'm sorry but at this point I don't exactly remember the exact steps for the procedure; so, it may be straight-forward as far as wine goes.
I have to say, though, I may have jumped the ship on saying that "it works". I got the GUI to run among other things, but I wasn't able to get the file flashed. I gave up after 3 tries, and used a WinBlows7 laptop. Sorry to get your hopes up; however, I'd like to know if you or anyone else gets this thing to function correctly in Wine. Sadly, it always seems much easier to just use a Windows PC than having to debug Wine.

Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)

I've made this thread to help people who have some problem and make new threads instead of searching the common questions. In my next post I will start posting the FAQ's and since it's not possible for me to be online 24/7 so it may take sometime but i will keep updating it. And if anyone have some doubts feel free to ask. BTW Ifeel free to PM me if you have some ideas or nice questions to improve this thread
Q1: I get bootloop after installing a custom rom. What is the problem?
A: Have you done everything correctly?
-Firstly post your problem in the ROM thread as the devs there may help you better.
-Check your mobile compatibility with the ROM
-Check if you have installed the correct kernel for your ROM.
-Check whether you have done the correct wipes as mentioned in the ROM thread.
-Some ROMs require formatting system. So if it is mentioned in main ROM thread then you must do it.
-Some releases may require stock rom first before flashing the custom rom. So flash the stock rom and then the custom rom over it.
If nothing works just download the stock ROM for your mobile and flash it using flashtool. This may solve your problem.
Q2: Can you suggest me the best ROM or kernel or something like that for my smartphone cause i'm really lazy to do a bit of searching...?
A: as per XDA rules a user is not supposed to ask for Best rom, one can go to dev forum and try some roms and decided which is best for them
Q3: I have rooted my phone successfully, now how can I install CWM (ClockWorkMod) Recovery?
A: go here download the the cwm and follow the thread properly to flash there
Q4: I have a problem with this ROM and what should I....
A: It's a ROM specific question, better post it in the ROM thread. They will help you better.
Q5: What is the safest way to root my phone or unlock its bootloader?
A: There no such thing as safest way. If you do everything correctly you will be successful in rooting you phone and unlocking the bootloader

A: go here
Q9: From where i do download stock ftf files
A: go here where u need to flash these files through FLASHTOOL
Q10: How do I OC(OverClock) or UC(UnderClock) my phone?
A: If your kernel supports the function and if your ROM has inbuilt option for the fuction then you can do it directly from ROM or else you can buy/download apps like SetCPU for your phone and can use it easily to OC, UC or change governer of your CPU. *Playing with your CPU is at your own risk and if you go anywhere wrong your phone might not be able to recover(permanent brick). So if you are a newbie(noob) just stay away from these things*
Q11: How does Thanks Meter affect my profile?
A: Thanks Meter actually is not useful in becoming Recognized Contributor/Themer/Developer. It is actually the appreciation you get on you works. Thanks Meter has been made so that members of XDA stop posting just THANKS on threads and thread could be clean and helpful.
Q12: How to be a Recognized Contributor/Themer/Developer?
A: Recognized Contributor is a role intended for members who produce some of the best original and helpful guides for users, as well as helping other users who have problems, in a friendly manner. Recognized Contributors will get a custom user title and the faster ad-free XDA template, as well as access to developer tools currently being created. Any Senior Moderator on XDA can add Recognized Contributors, should you feel deserving of this title.
Recognized Themers are those users who work (often tirelessly) on designing new theme graphics and user interface overhauls for ROMs. Users who aspire to be Recognized Themers should be creating original graphics work for their themes being released, demonstrate a commitment to crediting other users’ work when applicable, and seek the relevant permission in advance from the original creator. Recognized Themers will receive a custom user title and the faster ad-free XDA template, as well as access to developer tools currently being created. Any Senior Moderator on XDA can add Recognized Themers, should you feel deserving of this title.
Recognized Developer, as the name suggest are those who develop really good ROMs, kernels, etc. Anyone who is skillful and publishes his own creation other that just copying and pasting can be termed as recognized developer.

Q13: Why does my phone say Bootloader Unlock Allowed: No?
A: It's most probably a simlock. The mobile you bought has a simlock of the particular company whose SIM is being used. Normally the companies used to provide the unlocking code after sometime but now I think it won't be provided from now since simlock unlocking has become illegal. But you can break your simlock through WotanServer, Omnius or some local shops.
Q14: Can you tell me how does thanks meter increases with regard to number of thanks?

I need 12.0.a.2.254 for c5302
I need 12.0.a.2.254 for c5302. Can i get the link to download the ftf file?
hi. i just bough my xperia sp last week. i have a very noob question since im all new to these: will this rooting method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2440375 (doomlord's method) work on a stock xperia sp? (literally out of the box, with the latest firmware v.254). thanks a lot. im quite undecided if im gonna root mine cause im afraid ill brick it.
Unlocking No or Yes?
I have a question: in my fisrt attempt to unlock bootloader, on the step to confirm that it is possible to unlock the boot loader, the configuration "Bootloader unlock allowed" sayd "No". So, i´ve flashed the newest firmware for C5303 (2.254) and now, the configuration "Bootloader unlock allowed" said "Yes". It´s "YES" really? Or am i risking to brick my phone on unlocking bootloader? (Sorry my bad english)
DELETED. Worked it out myself
Root 12.0.A.2.254
Hi Guys.
Sorry for the newbie question, but I didn´t find the answer...
If I follow the thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2440375) to root my phone I will loose my data and configurations?
It is necessary to make the Wipes?
My phone was with firmware 211 and I had done the root successfully, but he upgraded to 254 and lost the root. When I open the SuperSU it presents the message that the binaries are not installed. Is it really necessary to do this procedure or is there another way to retrieve the binaries SuperSU.
Thanks,
Rafael

Hello
I don't think there is any wipe needed in this method.
If you really don't want to setup your whole phone again, try without any wipe. In the worst case you might get some force close. Do some backups anyway before trying to root because you might loose data accidentally. It sometimes happen and more often when you try to tweak / root your phone.

Even if you are rooted you can still flash an official ftf (for example official 4.3 when it's available). You might need to use flashtool instead of pc companion though ( I'm not really sure of that but I think you can easily find more info about that when you need it).
Bootloader unlocking is only to use a custom kernel. It is for example needed if you want to install a ROM based on aosp (pure android) instead of the stock Sony software. You won't need it and you should avoid that if you are not really sure of what you are doing.
Back to your Wi-Fi problem, the fixes available for root user don't really enhance it. They only make it a little more stable. It's not really worth it to root just for that and unless you have lot of free time to spend in this you should wait for version 4.3. There's many chances it will be fixed.

[Q] HTC M8 to dual boot Android and Windows

Hi Everyone
Just read on several sites how the latest model for Verison will Dual boot into Windows 8.1 and Android.
Is there a way to add this to the existing / original Android M8
Where did you read that?
Theres no way they would release a verison with 2 operating systems especially when android has been widly available for the device. Theres currently no version of a bootloader that has the right environment for windows adding an android boot to there bootloader "to try and even get back to android" Unfortunetly android is open sourse and windows is not, they would have to release there sourcecode to the developing world if they wanted to dual boot with android and they wont. so its up to us to exctract it on our end to make android 's boot loader able to dual boot into windows and hopefully find a way to get back.

it's not the source code which Needs to be released...it's the bootloader which Needs to be extracted and opened to get it working on the android Version! and that's difficult unless someone like cotulla will work on it!
Agreed im just saying we wouldnt need to extract it if they just handed it to us to work with and i hope cotulla does!

From http://www.anandtech.com/show/8390/htc-announces-the-htc-one-m8-for-windows
For some users the most exciting prospect of the HTC One (M8) for Windows may come from the fact that it shares the same hardware as the One (M8). It's possible that the developer community will be able to load the firmware from the HTC One (M8) onto the device in a dual boot configuration with Windows Phone 8 so users can switch between the operating systems as they please.

This is one of those, "Well it might be possible to if developers can figure it out" quotes. As the others have posted, there will be no absolute easy way to do this and a lot of the pains will be on the bootloader side. If someone DOES happen to figure it out, I don't see it happening for a LONG time (This also counts as hope for someone to prove me wrong ). We can only be hopeful that HTC failed to lock down something they should have done.
The HD2 was like the holy grail and I don't see that same sort of configuration happening again.
Htc has in m8 wp8.1 version something like s-off for android devices...in one m8 wp8.1 forum there is a thread where a guy is writing about the whole thing why it won't be that easy to mod the OS etc
I'm a daily "hourly" reader of engadget and they have posted about the version with windows but Verison is not releasing a dual boot version it is up to us to make that happen! Read alittle more carfully before making assumptions. Its possible "maybe" but its allot of work as snickler said its saying whats possible not whats out. Also im with One-M8-Master on this one, check out the thread it should clear a few things up on the boot loader side. lets all hope someone gets lucky and does it!

In another thread, this has been released. here
I moved this thread back to One Q&A since the moderating team decided that's where it belongs, but I'm closing it since we now have a single discussion thread for porting Windows Phone 8 to the current m8s. Please continue the discussion there.

Running Android APK on Windows Phone, current status

I found some old thread about installing APK files on a Windows Phone 8/10 (let's say Lumia 640).
It seems that it was possible to do so, but isn't anymore unless you install a specific verson.
Did I get that right? What's the current status of runnung Android or iOS Apps e.g. a game like HayDay on Windows?
I found this here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/win...apk-installed-unsupported-devices-sd-t3175843
This was found by a Google "last month" search:
https://tunesgo.wondershare.com/windows-phone/run-android-apps-on-windows-phone.html
Is this still valid or is it outdated?
This is all way outdated, Microsoft has already said they wont be adding the android subsystem.
Ah ok. I thought it might still be possible to get an older version on the phone where this still is enabled.
But obviously not.
No. Microsoft removed the Simple android subsystem kernal. Its not possible now
