Lte frustrations - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm in austin, had the galaxy note 2 before the 3, and I've noticed that the 3 just doesn't want to stay on LTE. The note 2 would always connect to lte immediately but with the 3 it likes to stay on 4g. Has anyone else experienced this? I already exchanged my first one thinking it was just defective but the new one is doing the same...

You can set it manually to lte only via the service menu however when you do that gsm (phone calls) will be sent straight to voicemail. There are a few threads on this issue already as well
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using xda app-developers app

yeah mine is less likely to say LTE when i wake it up for whatever reason.
but if i cycle airplane mode on/off, i'll come back into lte.
but i don't normally have a problem in general.

I know that AT&T's LTE in the Tulsa area is messed up currently. Speeds are crazy slow in spots. I do not know how he knows but I know a guy who works at AT&T and he told me that AT&T knows of the issue and is working on it. Of course. I guess it could also be a Note III issue.

I'm just curious if they are truly working on it, don't get me wrong, I love the power of this phone!

LTE -117 to -120dbm

Has there ever been a radio update to change this a little higher on any other phone? Dropping to 3G from LTE is killer.. I usually leave my phone in CDMA only in my home town area but I went to a launched area this passed week where the roll out is in the 90% complete zone and it still drops from 4G to 3G a lot..
Just wondering if a radio update has ever fixed an issue like this on any other devices in the past.

There have been radio updates on the past on other phones that helped but thus far not for the ONE yet

Yup, I think we r over 80% here in austin Texas and it happens to me all day long. My bud just got his T-Mobile One and he hits 20-25 mbps no matter where and when he does a speed test. I could kick myself in the ass for staying with sprint.

I don't think the phone is the problem buddy. I think it's a network issue. So unless u are planning on actually leaving sprint it shouldn't be a deal breaker.

I don't think it's a phone issue but my Note II holds LTE like a champ but damn I don't want to lug that thing around anymore after having the One for this long.. dbm levels are the same on the Note it just doesn't drop to 3G until the -130 range where as the One drops it around -117dbm... I'm holding out on a possible radio update before I do anything drastic like going back to the Note II.

If that's the case then my s4 would have those issues as well but it doesn't . not trying yo start a phone war but HTC or sprint need to get it right .

It's network and phones that are the issue. First off, it shoildnt be that much of a problem to drop to 3g, as long as the data still works. Buut 3g is worthless usually with no throughput.
Then these HTC phones can't hold on (or wont) to lte for ****, for whatever reason. The iPhone 5, gs3, and 4 all held 4g, and when they dropped it, it quickly moved back up to 4g. This phone, on the other hand, will drop 4g, sit with NO data connection for a while, then connect to worthless 3g while still in a 4g blanketed area.
Then on the LTE topic...I've been waiting and waiting but this crap seems to get slower and slower as time passes. Plenty of times I will get less than 1mbps. Ive been waiting almost 2 years for them to get it together but it seems that it won't be happening. Back to tmobole (<10 mbps always) I go
Sent from my HTCONE using xda app-developers app
Well I keep telling myself I need to try a galaxy but the build of the HTC phones keep luring me in. Maybe with this phone being a more popular model because it is across different carriers unlike the Evo line the devs can find away to adjust the settings of the hardware. It is very annoying when my T-Mobile buddy constantly pulls 15-25 mbps on his speed tests and I look at mine and see 3g icon on top. I know there is lte out there we r 80% complete here

Poor signal reception on AT&T with AT&T Note 3

Switched to Note 3 from Lumia 920 (phone upgrade, had my SIM replaced as well). Now on all places where I previously had stable LTE signal my Note has couple bars of HSPA or from time to time HSPA+. I still can catch LTE signal from time to time but not in the area I live (and had stable LTE for a year on Lumia).
What may be the reason? Is it a phone problem or just Nokia modem has better sensitivity?
Don't want to initiate replacement procedure, the phone seems perfect in all other aspects...
I've also been disappointed with the reception vs the S4. I'm also having trouble installing apps from the play store >.< even on wifi.
I have bad reception also
I am thinking of returning, I have had to switch to airplane mode twice in the past hour to get it to reconnect to LTE. It sometimes drops out all together when accessing the play store. I am in Baton Rouge, and didn't have any issues on my iphone 5.

That's crazy, I'm in Baton Rouge too.Just got my Note 3 from the Best Buy Mobile on Bluebonnet. Maybe its borked because of the impending hurricane doom.
Yes, switching airplane mode on and off helps to establish LTE link everywhere... But it switches back to HSPA in 20-30 min and never return back by itself. Definitely software bug
I'm getting much better signal than I ever got with my 920 or S3. I'm in Houston FWIW.

I'm from just south of Baton Rouge, reception has either been great or next to none for me. I can manually put the note 3 on lte but the speed at that point is slower than the 4g. Sadly my s4 active was nearly the same way...

Yeah, maybe the storm is causing issues ,I'm going to give it a few days.
In the same room, my wife's iphone has 4 bars and this one has 2
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using xda app-developers app
I'm east of Baton Rouge, in Hammond, and I've seen the same thing! lose LTE and sticks to HSPDA! Airplane mod does fix it as well. I hope it's the storm, but I don't thinks so!
For you guys with a Google play issue...
If you connect to a VPN like privateinternetaccess.com (also avaliable on the play store) and select a country other than the US it will more than likely work.

I'm in the Sugar Land/Missouri City area. That's strange because my house is a dead zone. I'd get 1 bar on my S3 and 920. I get 2-3 with my Note.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using xda app-developers app
I live in SF Bay area and this definitely not storm, it's some software/modem firmware fault. It seems not trying to switch to LTE once kicked to HSPA. If I do airplane mode switch on a place I have good LTE signal it would jump to LTE and keep connected for a long time until I move and it loses it. After that it jumps down to HSPA and not trying to return back on LTE even if I go back to same place where it had full bars of LTE before
Well good to know it isn't just Southeast Louisiana. Also, just plain nuts to me that we're all posting in the same thread miles apart, go figure.
I haven't had time to switch my Sim back to my S4 to do some testing. But I feel like my speeds are definitely suffering.
Post your speed tests for comparison. BTW one of my favorite features about the s pen are the easy screen captures and edits.
Maybe it's just an APN issue? Has anyone tried playing with that? I tried a few from rootzwiki but don't really know what I'm doing in the APN neighborhood.

For what it's worth, FL is having issues as well. Play store has been wonky and the reception has been less than stellar. With all these reports I'm willing to bet it's something on their end.
I am going to try and swap it out at the local store tomorrow even though I ordered it online. I should be able to according to the terms. I am willing to give it another shot, although at work today I had absolutely zero signal just a circle with a line through it. I normally get at least phone and text functionality at work.
All your phones are perfectly fine - they just need a firmware update or two.
I've seen mine even drop off to edge just sitting here at my desk.

Swift kick in the throttle

So just got my note 3 Tuesday and am now experiencing blazing fast 0.45 mbps avg speed tests. I've tried searching for solutions, including the *# combinations that some people have luck with in the dialer, and none work for me to try and switch the signal. I don't mind settling for hspa only if need be as it's not long until the cycle restarts, but some repeatable solution would be fantastic. It is not rooted, but I do not object if there is no other solution at all. Any ideas, input, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

I can't edit, but forgot to mention that it is dropping LTE signal everywhere I was fine on a note 1 and 2, and sitting right next to a gs4 with a good LTE signal, it would continually be on "4g". A restart or airplane mode on and off quickly will get it back on LTE but only temporarily. Is this typical behavior of a throttled phone, or could I potentially have a defective piece of junk?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
The note 3 seems to not like lte in my area either, I don't think it's a hardware issue since it traded my first one back in and the new one does the same thing

Mine was doing the same thing. I did a hard reset (or 2] and it's running great. Locks onto LE and I'm getting 30mbps +. You will lose all your data though. ?

Make sure all your APN settings are correct and that your network mode is on LTE/WCDMA/GSM.
Thanks for the replies. I don't mind resetting the phone, just want to make sure it isn't a physical defect that needs me to return the phone. The lte here is normally very solid, I had no trouble on note 1 or 2 really.
How do I check the APN settings and see the lte/wcdma/gsm menu. When I searched I only found dialer codes that didn't work no matter how or how many times I tried them. None seemed to be specific to note 3. Google searches as well as using the xda app don't return anything, but maybe I am not searching correctly?

I tried the gsm lte settings and it never worked no matter how I tried. Restarts combined with changing the settings with that #* method and no such luck. Will I have to root to find a solution?
I never had been throttled before last month. Now I just got it again as I tipped 5gb.
I have 10 days left too on the billing cycle. That is gonna suck as it just got me again today.

That can't be a one off. This phone is on "4g" a number of times I see other phones on LTE. I'm not sure how next generations get worse as it is weaker than my note 2 was, but you are not alone for sure.

Signal strength issues

I'm having a lot of signal strength issues as of this morning. Losing data signal and going in out of service. This is in a high data strength area, downtown. I never had this issue on my S3.
I love the phone but I might have to sell it.
Any help would appreciated

my signal hasn't been worse with my moto x. It could just be service being done for your network in that area. I know a lot of things started changing across networks recently. Just a few months ago I believe att and vzw sold different bands to each other in different areas in the US that changed things drastically. Also, vzw has been having trouble with 4g in certain major cities recently (or i saw reports recently). And other carriers are doing new upgrades to their system that are slowing things down. Get someone with an s3 on your service and bring look at direct comparison at work, should solve your problem, or let you know if there is one i mean.
I don't think I get LTE as often with the motox as I did with my S3

Might have to switch to cdma only to cure this till sprint gets their updates done. Same problem on my lg g2 on towers that are not fully updated.
I am having a similar issue, though not to the extent that you are having it. In areas where my Galaxy S3 would have strong LTE, my M8 has trouble connecting to LTE, occasionally stays on, and then drops to 3G. I often get the issue where I am on 3G or LTE and it drops to having the X over the bars, showing no signal. I bought through Best Buy, so I am thinking about going in to get it replaced (of course all of the Best Buy's around me don't seem to have it in stock...), but if even a replacement phone isn't working, then maybe it's worth it to just admit defeat and get the plastic trash GS5...

This is what I have to do at the house. The LTE signal is not strong enough and the phone switches from LTE to 3G every few minutes. This keeps me from getting calls. I changed the network mode to CDMA only at the house under Mobile data. When I level the house I change it back to LTE/CDMA. Now if I could get Tasker to do this for me I would be set.
This issue was the same with the LG G2. That is the reason I did not keep that phone. The Note 3 did not have this issue. That is the phone I had before moving to the M8.
