[Q] All files are gone! - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, big problem here.
I was backing up, preparing for the 4.3 upgrade. I was cleaning some files off the storage using my pc, including the weird storage folder that only contained (more) titanium backup stuff.
Well, next thing I know, my phone doesn't see any of my files anymore. They're not there on PC now either, and no root-enabled file manager can see anything. However, 9gb of space is still being used by "other"!
Please help!

If it helps, I think I broke the symbolic links. Any solution? Or have I screwed this?

There might be an adb pull command to grab all files in /media. However I don't know the full syntax. Google adb pull sd card and you should hopefully find the correct command. You might have to play with the path a bit to get it right. It's something like /data/media/ on the One.
I'm not close to a pc so can't see what it should be.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 4

No luck. After major research online, the files are gone - I'd have to use recovery software after performing a very long backup in order to retrieve, and there wasn't that much that I lost since the last backup, a few photos just.
More a pain in the ass really. I never would have thought that those directories could do that. Kinda dangerous.

Cracked Screen, How to blind copy data to replacement??

I just got my captivate 1 month ago (first android). I rooted the phone and installed Cognition 2.3b6 right when i got it. I have never backed up the phone.
2 days ago the phone dropped from about 18 inches onto the bathroom floor. Cracking the interior of the screen. Origintally i could see the top half, the touchscreen hardly works. Now i can only see a faint blue color when i boot hte phone. It still works, i get alarms and feel it vibrate.
I understand that I might be able to do a nandroid backup (is it possible to do it blind?), but is that the correct thing to do? Will that change the deviceID of my replacement phone from AT&T (insurance replacement).
I would like to get the data backed up and transferred over asap so i can pack the old phone up and ship it off before the holidays.
Thank you guys!
adb pull /sdcard
Some one else might be able to help you with the specifics, but pull the /sdcard data from your phone.
From a phone
what?
I figured i need to probably copy it to the sd card. But from what i understand, some applications rely on DeviceID's and not the actual phone. Ergo, if you do a complete nandroid backup it will also copy over the DeviceID (from what i understand, correct me if i'm wrong).
Or is that something different than what you are suggesting?
Your data is stored in /sdcard. The external sdcard is /sdcard/external_sd for froyo, cant remember file path for 2.1. What else could you be wanting to transfer to the new phone?
From a phone
I've never done it before, I want to be able to transfer all data (ie, installed apps, cached notebooks for evernote, preferences, etc) to the other phone.
I have never done this before on an android phone and don't know the best way to tackle this using a cracked screen (can't even unlock the phone)
I think I can manage to do a nandroid backup ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEqbjUb4WxM ) but i'm concerned about the device id

There are 2 way i can think of.
1- Like mentionned in prior post do a adb pull /sdcard
2- Boot into recovery and try to a backup from there blindly (following online pictures/video of the different menus and pressing the buttons accordingly).
I don't see the big deal about your deviceid. Many users have had a auto generated id with roms. It will be ported with the nandroid. Not sure just how wide spread the use of deviceid is used in apps.
Thanks I was really confused about the whole DeviceID thing. Figured it was best to play it safe.
I'll give it a try, i'm sure i can manage to do a nandroid backup on my phone
I'll keep you posted
There are ways of getting your device id back. First of all theres a market app that can backup the device id on your new phone and restore it back after you restore the backup http://www.appbrain.com/app/android-id-changer/adaptive.cogid Or you could search around the forums and/or google for ways of changind and backing up your device id, there are multiple ways of doing it. And don't forget about backing up your sdcard, like boborone said, do an adb pull /sdcard from the clockworkmod screen (adb works from recovery in case you didn't know).
Hell man, you can adb pull the whole phone if you want.
From a phone
Can you send the link to where i can find out how to do and adp full pull from the pc? The only instructions i'm seeing are for the android sdk (bit confused)
the sdk is downloaded to your pc, and then you run that command from a terminal/command prompt with the phone connected.

Thanks, the screencast helped, but i honestly think that 2 days before i did this, I turned off usb debugging (so i could use my phone as a hard drive)
I think that is why whenever i plug in my phone, it vibrates really hard and droid explorer doesn't find any devices. Suggestions?

[Q] un-deletable 0kb files HELP !

Greetings from sunny ??? nottingham
I have a folder with a bunch of files that all show as 0kb that i can not remove.
Does anybody have an idea how i can get rid of these?
The story so far....
I am/was on rocket rom v2, previously i had put the google currents app on, but that was a couple of roms ago and i have not put it back.
I started having a few odd problems and realized my int sd was full. i eventually narrowed it down to a google currents folder. this was not so easy as any app that tried to scan the int sd in any way would crash or freeze. Even in manage apps it would only show details of apps from a to c any after that hung on 'computing'. i managed to delete over 5 gb from that folder, all except one folder.
Now i am left with a folder on the int sd inside the android/data folder called 'com.google.android.apps.currents' inside that is a folder 'cache' inside that a folder 'blobs.120.1184434912' inside that a folder thats a bunch of letters and numbers, inside that a folder 'att' and finally inside that a bunch of files all with single letters, numbers or symbols as there filename and all 0kb in size.
These remaining files and folders i can not get rid of.
I have tried....
Delete with root explorer and a couple of other file apps crash's or locks
Cut and paste elsewhere fail
Connect to computer and...
Delete fail
Move fail
Erase fail
Unlock freezes pc
Change permissions blocked
Re-name fail
Scanned with virus and spyware progs clean
Delete with dos fail
Factory reset fail
Factory reset with format usb crash's or locks
Flash a pit file in pc odin Still there
I wouldnt mind just leaving them there, but as i say any app that in any way scans the int sd crash's or freezes this makes the note almost un-useable.
I'm sure I've missed a few things i have tried but you get the point.
I have searched xda and the web as best i can and tried pretty much every idea I've come across.
Help !!!
Please !
What an odd problem....
have you tried aroma file manager?
Thanx p107r0
I havent tried that particular file manager, many others though.

Unfortunatly i have formatted it several times now and those files still remain.
Are you familiar with adb tools? You could try using adb to delete the files.

It's fairly simple once you get the hang of it, but i don't know any guides off the top of my head.
Not on my laptop at the minute but once I'm downstairs I'll give you a quick run through of what to do to delete that folder. Might not work, but then again it might

it won't let you rename or delete because they reside on googles servers, that's why they are showing 0kb. u can't change permission because it's on sd card and w don't have the ability to do so on sd card. i promise a format got rid of them but u didn't notice it because google cache server put links back as your phone started. the explorer crashes because as fast as is trying to remove them the server is already putting them back. basically what im trying to say is just ignore them cause there not really there anyways.

as above, these files seem to be causing problems.
my google currents folder has a lot of these folders, but none of the files are empty.
although having said that, it may be an idea to deselect the option to have google back up your app data.
i'd also maybe try installing the currents app then (if you can) go into the app settings and clear the data.

that thread gives a good guide to getting adb installed, and gives a good grounding of what it can do. it's a bit more in depth than what you need though, all you need is to install it, add the path to the environment vaiables as described in that thread (that is an optional step but it makes things much easier)
the path you'll be looking for is /mnt/sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.currents
be sure to remember that the case of the letters in the linux (and therefore android) file systems is vital - ie mnt/sdcard/Android is an entirely different folder than mnt/sdcard/android.
so basically once you've your note connected (with the screen unlocked) open a command line and type (minus the quotes) "adb devices"
it should (hopefully) list your note in there.
then type these commands in order, being careful to observe the correct case when typing filenames or folder names.
adb shell
rm -r /mnt/sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.currents
it could take a while if there are a lot of files. once it's finished, you should be back to a line with a flashing cursor, then just type exit and it should take you back to your standard windows command line.
i would try taking off the "back up my settings to googles servers) and installing currents and wiping the data first though.
OK time for an update.....
Aroma file manager same as all the others, it either freezes or crash's out altogether.
I have already deselected back up to google, no effect.
I have already tried re-loading google currents and populating it with fresh downloads. Then clear data and un-install, no effect.
Finally took me a while to get adb set up and working, but............
wait for it............................................................................
No effect !!
It starts the process, and scrolls info very fast. I left it for about 20 mins and it was still going. eventually i clicked on the window and it said something along the lines of no such file or directory then endlessly scrolls att.
I appreciate the suggestions given, but i do hope there are some more.
I am completely lost with this now.

Seems kind of similar to problems I used to have in the good old Palm OS days, sometimes due to some app errors 0b files would appear on SD card, and - to make long story short - the only thing that would help was taking the card out and formatting it on the computer.
Maybe flashing with repartitioning could help?

If you cannot delete the folder with del or erase command in dos I think you have a bad block there. In this case you have to leave this folder alone.
Hi, thanx for the further suggestions
tknguyencsu leaving alone is not a good idea as it does affect how the note works. Anything that scans the int sd freezes or crash's out when it gets to that folder. for instance if i go to manage applications it will only give me detailed info on apps from A to C any after that it wont display the size of data etc, just stays on 'computing'. so i really need to get rid of this folder.
p107r0 Any idea how i try your suggestion of 'flashing with repartitioning' ?
I have done several full wipes inc usb storage, i have formatted usb storage from recovery several times also.
There are a couple of options in recovery i have not tried because i dont know what they really mean and so im a little scared to try with all the bricking thats been going on.

Lots of reading to be safe, but afair there is Dr ketan's guide on flashing LBF with repartitioning, which should be theoretically safe when performed from/over GB ROM. I'll look for the link later.
Here.
P.S. There's also app by chainfire which checks if your device is prone to superbrick: Got Brickbug

Are you still on the same ROM? Maybe formatting int sd from other one would do the trick?
Hi p107r0
Yes i am on the same rom, but now a later version.
I am using Rocket Rom. the problem first came to light after upgrading from v1 to v2. since then i have been back to GB to RR v1, RR v2 and am now on RR v3.
I am out of time tonight, and on the road all day tomorrow, so will try a completely different rom as soon as i can.

[Q] Deleted root folder (/, not /sdcard)

Update 2:
So now I can see most of the files with ES, but OI file manager isn't seeing them. What the heck is going on? Ghost files?
Alright, so I'm in a bit of a pickle.
I was having problems with Rdio and wanted to wipe all traces of it from my phone to install an older version. Using ES File Explorer, I searched for all the files related to the app in "/" and once I found them, I foolishly used select all and delete. Problem is, it seems "select all" actually selected all the folders in / and not only those found using the search function.
The odd part is I can see all the folders in / when I use OI file manager (though some are empty, namely /data and /datadata), but not when I use ES.
Does anybody have an idea as to what I can do? Odd thing is the phone is working fine and not all files on it have been deleted (the files inside EFS seem to have been though, but I still have signal). I'm afraid to reboot it since I figure it might become bricked. I've got a recent Nandroid backup which wasn't deleted, so I'll be fine if I can get to recovery, but is there any chance of that not happening?
Anyways, I'm feeling really dumb and stressed out.
Thanks for looking and/or helping!
Cheers!
Update
Making a call seems to have restored the files (.bak and others) in the efs folder and some other files seem to be reappearing. Maybe if I just wait it out all the files will come back from the dead? Files that weren't showing 10 minutes ago are back and are dated earlier than today.
Again, I'm mainly looking to know if I can reboot into recovery (or normally?) without many problems.
Thanks!

Flashing an 4.2.2 rom and file structure issue.

I decided to start this thread as both assistance for some as well as a collaberation on workarounds when you a person flashes a 4.2.2 rom coming from a 4.1.2.
Just like some (maybe most) I flashed CM 10.1 and played around a bit with it and decided it was just not ready to be run as a daily. Being the flashalohic that I am, I made sure I backed up before flashing CM 10.1 so when I went into recovery and went to restore imagine my surprise when it was blank, yep nothing was there. Why did this happen? Well doing some research and reading/searching I found out that the update from Android 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 changes the file structure of the 'virtual' sdcard on our devices. Actually it changes it for every device. What has changed is that the ability to add user accounts, similar to any regular computer, has been implemented. However, if the proper steps are not taken before you flash a new 4.2.2 Rom, you will end up with a huge mess and run out of room on your device in a hurry.
The actual location when viewed with a root file manager has been here on 4.1.2:
/data/media
And though you will see the same files in /sdcard and /storage/sdcard0, those are just symlinks to the same info, just like a shortcut (on a windows box) or alias (on a mac box). Once you flash a 4.2.2 ROM, the actual location gets changed (and all the files moved) to here:
/data/media/0
And the symlinks get changed to /sdcard/0 and /storage/sdcard0/0. On the surface, no big deal, right? Wrong. The problems arise if the version of your custom recovery is not compatible with a 4.2.2 ROM. If it is not and you keep flashing 4.2.2 ROMs you might soon end up in trouble. If, while using the 'older' custom recovery, you continue flashing, your sdcard ends up somewhere around here:
/data/media/0/0/0/0/0/0 (etc.) with all your files copied to every '0' directory and your symlinks end up the same way, and your device quickly runs out of space (the dreaded "your device is low on storage" message).
This may also make it very difficult to restore your nandroid of a 4.1.2 ROM as well. If you are already in that situation, not to worry, the solution for that is later in this post.
So far I have only been able to to copy all the files found in the last /data/media/0/0/0/0 (?) folder to my computer. Then using a file manager that will show hidden files and folders, copy/move the files in the last '0' directory to:
/data/media/0
And then use file explorer to delete all the other '0' directories until I have just this one:
/data/media/0
leaving nothing else in the symlinks but /sdcard/0 and /storage/sdcard0/0. This techniques is if you end up with a huge file structure.
****BACK UP YOUR SD CARD FIRST!!!!! before deleting any 0 folders!!!****
NOTE: A reboot of your device is essential at this point.
If after flashing a 4.2.2 ROM you decide you don't like it and want to restore your nandroid to your saved 4.1.2 ROM, how does that work out?
1.) Get yourself a (good) root file browser.
2.) Brows to /data/media/0
note: this is where android (and almost everything else that uses a Linux kernel) mounts anything that is considered "external" storage.
3.) Do all of your file fixing from here. It will make changes universally.
4.) select all within /data/media/0 and then paste everything back into /data/media selecting merge and/or overwrite. Once done, just delete the /data/media/0 folder, reboot your phone and Profit.
This is a pain and I agree but at this point is the only way I know how to get around this. If anyone knows other ways please share.
* While writting this I came across this info from user elfaure. I havent tried this yet as I am at work and get crappy signal but please post results if you try and if it works, please thank him! *
elfaure: Ok folks for next guy who decides to upgrade to 4.2 but does NOT want the multi-user environment, give this a try.
1. Download the attached file
2. Remove the .txt extension
3. Copy it to your /data directory
4. Open Android Terminal Emulator (Free Market app if you don't already have it)
5. At the prompt type "cd /data"
6. Type "chmod 644 .layout_version" on the file in /data (/data/.layout_version)
Code:
cd /data
chmod 644 .layout_versionNow when you upgrade to 4.2 you should stay single user and have no /data/media/0 directory when you are done. If anyone tries this please let me know if it works and thank me if it does.
ps-its just a special file in a special location, the presence of which tells Android NOT to upgrade your system to a multi-user environment. If you later decide you want multi-users, delete the file and reflash (from recovery) the stock or custom firmware or ROM or recovery. If your custom ROM or recovery wipes the entire /data partition less /data/media including this file, obviously then this will not help, but with latest versions of ROMs and recoveries that should not happen any more.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40911246#post40911246
It also looks as if he may be working on a script to help as well and I will keep track and update as needed.
So far this is what I have come up with and I hope it helps some and I hope others that are smarter than I can correct me if I am wrong on any of the above or other add information on other ways to correct this.
I think this is part of my issue but I don't have any 0 folder under data?
I too flashed the 4.2.2 ROM, and noticed that every everything on my sd card had somehow moved to my internal memory? When I went to reflash the ROM it failed. It I also tried to reflash the ROM I was originally running and it too failed. Luckily I was able to do a nandroid restore so the phone is "usable" but TWRP 2.5 still does not see my my external sd and that seems to be that make reason I can not do anything within in the recovery.
Any suggestions?
The op is telling you exactly how to fix it.

Let my clarify:
I have used two different file managers and even used to terminal emulator using ls -la to make sure i have no hidden files
sdcard0/data/ there is no media directory
Maybe this isn't my problem, since I don't see any file/dir with a 0, but all this mess started when I loaded up a 4.2.2 ROM?

Weighing in, worked like a charm for the most part. TWRP recreated another TWRP folder inside its original TWRP folder (it has to be left at /data/media/0/TWRP for you to be able to reinstall a nandroid backup) [also forgoing obvious yo dawg joke here], but besides that my phone is back to being right as rain.
Nice write up on this issue. Thanks

I'm sure it wouldn't work for doing a nandroid restore, but on my Galaxy Nexus I would just make certain I had the latest version of TWRP, boot into recovery, format the SD card, and then push the rom files to /data/media/ and flash. That is my only complaint about this change, really...truly "clean" installations are inherently more risky or difficult, dependent on your knowledge level.
It won't let me delete folder 0 no matter what. Inside that folder is a ViperRom folder that won't delete as well no matter what I do!
Thanks for this info. I think I'm going to take the plunge this weekend so this will be very helpful info.

I think it moved my ROM data into the 0 folder, how do I get it out? Everything else from the 0 folder is deleted except for ViperROM's folder, and whenever I try to move or delete it, it just fails the operation. I already have a copy out of the 0 folder, but I still want it out, because otherwise I can't flash things, since it just shows the the almost* empty sdcard/0 folder. Help? Should I just put my mods in the 0 folder and deal with it?

So can we delete the legacy file now? I haven't done anything with my internal storage since coming from 4.1.2 for the first time. It looks like twrp 2.6.3 copied all my files correctly to the 0 file but all the files are still also in "legacy" folder. Is it duplicate that I can delete from legacy or are they just symlinked? I am never going back now that we have official 4.3 release.

I am never going back now that we have official 4.3 release.

I am not certain to be honest. It looks like the file structure didn’t change with the release of 4.3 so it’s possible that they are symlinked. If all your files are moved to the /0/ folder and you have nothing in the legacy folder it would make sense that you would be able to but I have yet to test this.
I suppose this weekend I could back up the phone and file tree and give it a shot
Thanks for the response. I haven't tested out yet either but will post back if I do.

Can't move TWRP folder off phone

I recently unlocked my bootloader using sunshine and installed TWRP. After rebooting into recovery, I immediately made a backup of my phone. When I plug my phone in, I can see the TWRP folder, but it shows as empty. None of my file explorers can see anything, either. TWRP, however, is able to see it when I go into the file manager. I can't get ADB to see the device when hooked up to my computer while in TWRP. MTP also doesn't work. Chmod 755 and 777 doesn't do anything. I was able to initially copy the TWRP folder into the downloads folder in the TWRP file manager, but now it just hangs there if I try to move it again.
How do I get access to my backup?

Unfortunately, there aren't any solutions in that thread.

There are two solutions in the first 4 posts:
ruledrbrt1 suggests http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64048593&postcount=2
And GeoFX has the great : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64049328&postcount=5
Both work on my phone so they should work on yours too.
Have you given file explorer root privileges?

I didn't even see GeoFX's post for some reason. That looks like it worked. Thanks!
TWRP and NAND Backups
I had the same question, and found the previous thread too. So what's the difference between these 2 locations?
/data/media/0/TWRP
and
/sdcard/TWRP
From my point of view, they are duplicates - same data in both folders, just duplicated into separate partitions. If this is true, then my 7.5 GB NAND backup, is really taking up 15GB of memory. Can that be true? I'm doubting it, but you never know.
I started to dive into this, because I was also wondering if NAND backups made copies of my media or not (photos, music, etc). After digging into it a bit, it looks like it does NOT make a backup of anything in the root folder "/data/media" in order to prevent it from non-stop backing up in a loop (you can't back up the location your backing up to, at the same time). This is also noted on github: https://github.com/TeamWin/Team-Win-Recovery-Project/issues/276 Logically, this would make sense since I currently have 25 GB of data in my /sdcard/ location. That's one helluva compression if you were able to get this down to 7.5GB! So I'm guessing this isn't included, which is also why I'm guessing that these are really the same. /sdcard/ must be a shortcut to the /data/media/0/ location, that's my best understanding.
So my original question still stands. What's the reason for these 2 locations, and is there a difference?
This also brings up the next question, what's the best way to make an all-encompassing backup? NAND + Titanium Backup + copy all the contents of your /sdcard/ over to your computer (or OTG drive)?

The way I understand it, and I might be wrong, is that before Android 4.0 (or maybe 5.0), the partition containing user data was called /sdcard and apps were stored in a separate partition. The partition where apps went was significantly smaller, which could result in people running out of space for apps while still having a ton of free user data. To remedy this, the newer version of android places apps and user data in the same partition (called media). The /sdcard that you see is a symlink (shortcut) to this new partition, and is included so that older apps that were designed to expect the /sdcard partition to be there will still work.
