[Q] Is the HTC one a great phone for gaming? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This might sound crazy, but I'm wanting to sell my gaming pc to get a nice gaming phone. I had 2 phones in mind, the HTC one or the galaxy s4. Now I know the galaxy s4 is faster cause of the 1.9ghz quad. But for a fact its not better. Because of the HTC one having the front speakers and the metal body and with HTC sense I just love it. Anyway my main question is will the HTC one keep up with games for awhile cause now the nexus 5 is coming out and the note 3 is already here. Also if I get the HTC one which one would be the easiest to s-off. There are a lot of companys that have it. I won't be activating the phone but I will be wanting to s off and unlock..etc. At the moment I have the HTC evo 3d and its good. But mobile gaming is going to get really nice and I'm on my phone much more than my pc anyway. So yeah..the HTC one is what I'm aiming toward but just for some reason i am not sure. Last thing is-will I be able to push the HTC one a lot more with over clocking the GPU and CPU? I watched a video and the highest they got was 1.9ghz cpu if stock is 1.7 why does it mess up only at 1.9? I was hoping at least 2.3ghz to sorta be up to par with the note 3. Anyway I know this phone is still a beast without overclocking if its to much of a hassle for it. Thanks for any help I get. You will be thanked.

HTC is still a top tier phone. It is rootable and easy to s-off. If you install a custom rom and kernel, you can over clock the cpu and gpu up to it's maximum for gaming. But in doing so the battery life will be horrible and the phone will heat up quickly (because of it's metal body). I would recommend this phone 100%.

You can overclock it to 2.3ghz... but the benefit is only extremly minimal! You burn through your battery life.. not the life time for this one cycle.. you **** up your battery if it gets too hot for a longer period of time.. so my advice.. overclock it only to 1.9 if you really want to then you should be good to go

And what about over clocking the GPU could it be about the same speed as the adreno 330?? Also should I wait for the nexus 5?

well it does have the next step over in processing power, and should technically be better at what you want it for, but i still think that the htc one as a whole better package even with the "older" 600 is still a powerhouse that should hold up for a good amount of time into the future.

get the htc one. the s4 may be clocked faster but also has tons of bloatware preinstalled.

Thanks guys. Heres another thing. Please tell me why the HTC one max is using the same parts as the HTC one? It makes no sense..imagine if it had the snapdragon 800 and the adreno 330. That would be the best phone ever!!! But only difference I saw was the screen size and the fingerprint reader (on the back of the phone???)

I love gaming and I bought my htc one for that reason. Its gaming is superior to any other phone I've had. There's no lag in most games. Its awesome I'd say yes.

I say the galaxy s4 cos gaming feels much more stable than the HTC. The amount of customisability on the s4 surpasses the HTC by miles and the s4 is less likely to crash every app you have when over clocked.

I do agree that the s4 is nice and installing custom ROMs will fix the bloatware problem. But one fact is, the HTC one is better than any other smartphone as of now simply because of the front speakers. When you are playing a game you actually feel like you are in it. But god.....I wish the one max was improved performance wise still.....

[q] htc incredible s benchmark and lag

Hi,
I just got the HTC INCREDIBLE S after selling my desire DHD
The phone is awesome, I find that there is some LAG, so I decided to run a quadrant benchmark test and it only came up with a score of 1560 compared to my DHD which was 2000+ every time.
The specs seem to be exactly the same except for the new processor
I believe it may be a slower one, though it is the latest one.
Any ideas people why this phone is slower and lagging??
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOF2T1Whm9Y
Video shows quadrant test.
enable usb debugging...battery will last longer too.
see specs on wikipedia, DHD is most powerfull, processor is better

They use identical SOC (MSM8255) and have the same RAM so I don't knwo what you are talking about. In fact, Wikipedia doesn't even have a page about the Incredible S.
oops, my bad
Do you think sense UI could be the issue?.I notice that a lot of devices that natively run sense run a lot slower than those that dont... Imagine what a cyanogen Rom will do to the incredible s, well be saying HTC desire hd Who? Jk . ... I can't wait for root lol

I have to totally disagree, I had a hero for nearly two years, rooted it very early on and started putting custom roms on it... when I came to sell it, I put it back to stock and it was a smooth as butter. CM always had some problems, lockups, occasional lag... stock rom just worked. I;m not saying there aren't improvements to be made, but I am purely sticking to modded stock roms from here on out

Disappointment

XDA's vote for the best smartphone of 2011 is here! Sadly, the Incredible S wasn't in the list, nor any other single-core phones which came out this year.
Is any one else disappointed in this?
Of course, dual-core phones have more raw power under the hood, but does it really make them that much better? Physical build quality is an important aspect to take into consideration as well. Furthermore, as far as the single-core phones go, I personally believe that the Incredible S deserves some merit as one of (if not the) best.

Incredible S is the best single core phone HTC has ever made. I wouldn't expect the Incredible S to beat out a dual core phone for phone of the year. If there was a poll for the best single core phone the winner will either be the Incredible S or Nexus S. Devs on Xda love the Nexus S.

I know most of you coming from the Vivid will hate me for saying this but i will go to the HTC M7 as my next phone. I got to love sense, if you dont, no need to be staying with HTC, but i need my fix of sense
Well... I'm really happy with my Vivid. GLAD I DIDN'T GO TO THE ONE X! And as much as I'd love to stay with HTC (still have a G1) their newest phones are a disappointment. The One series was a huge disappointment. So many hardware defects it really made me lose faith in them. I think my next is going to be a an S4 or I might buy a used SII, switch back and forth and ride it out until I'm eligible for an upgrade and see what's out then.
Gonna see what's available after mwc in February...if nothing interests me ill probably wait for the sgs4...but I've heard rumors that it might not have android but Samsung's own firmware instead...if that's the case...idk lol
Only time will tell...as of now nothing is really catching my eye :/ one x+ looks nice...bit you can't even get diff yet...AMD nexus 4 just doesn't have enough storage for me...I need at least 32gb so I can have music and a couple roms handy (about a 1-2gb worth of Roms)

Nexus 4... Oh wait already have one!
This phone rocks, if you don't need the extra storage I'd recommend it to everyone... Of course there is the issue that it's really not for sale right now... Ugh. Supposedly February they are coming back in stock, we'll see I guess.
Anyway the device is epic. Pure android, no bloatware, screen is gorgeous, speed is ridiculously fast, put it this way you may not think you have lag on your vivid, until you play with this thing. It's literally iphone smooth. No lte? No problem! Make sure to copy your apn from your vivid and you'll get fast stable hspa+ that you'll never notice a difference from lte on stock. Camera is almost on the same level, maybe a tad bit weaker, but no shutter lag and the 4.2 camera app is very very nice. Build quality is solid, right on par with the vivid, feels sturdy and looks great.
The only issue is 4.2 needs patching. Battery life out of the box is actually worse than the vivid. This is due to the location service being borked on 4.2. Go into maps, Uncheck "report from this device" under location settings and battery life is much better than the vivid, however you don't get the most out of google now with it shut off. It won't show places of interest near you with the option shut off but until google patches it its the best only option.
So to summarize, once google patches 4.2 it'll be perfect. If you can deal with the wait and don't need the storage, I fully recommend it's awesome!

The new sony phones look nice
Sent from my Vivid 4G using Tapatalk 2
I guess I should mention this about the nexus 4. The screen size is a tad too large. The vivids screen size is perfect honestly, large enough to watch videos, small enough to use one handed. The nexus 4 is a tad too large for a good one handed experience. And the worst part? It's 4.7 inch screen will be considered small by the end of the year.
HTCs new droid dna design is basically going to be the reference design for HTCs next flagships and at 5 inches it's too big, I've played with one too so I can attest to that. The galaxy s4 is also rumored to be 5 inches, and the note 3 is rumored to be a whopping 6.3 inches!
When does it stop? Ergonomics are just going to hell here! I remember when htc released the Evo, my Samsung eternity fit in its entirety inside it's screen and I thought there's no way I'd want a phone that big. I was wrong there, 4.3 to 4.5 is actually the best sizes available hands down. But now screen sizes have just gone haywire! Before you know it people are going to be carrying 22 inch monitors with cell radios!
What's really frustrating is they still make smaller screen sizes but they all blow. Typically feature low resolution screens, dated hardware, and extremely outdated versions of android such as froyo or gingerbread with no plans whatsoever for android updates. Samsung releases about 50 of these Galaxy Rubbish phones a year!

I would go for the HTC One
There are several reasons why I would get the One over the Nexus 4. The main reason is, that I've always been a fan of HTC phones and build quality. I've also not been a fan of LG. I currently have a One XL and it is awesome. The N4 is better for developers but its going to be more and more behind as far as specs go.
I think for other people the main deciding factor should be interface. With my One X I can choose Sense roms and AOSP roms. With the N4 you're pretty much stuck with AOSP roms.
A friendly advice is post this thread on the General section http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=256
Obviously you're posting on the HTC One forum. Why would an aspiring owner of HTC One let his dream device down over any other device?
*Except for the trolls here who got no life and just come in the HTC One section just to say how they dislike the device*
This phone does seem amazing but again it's going to be crippled by delays in updates so that's why I picked the nexus. The 2gb ram, 720p screen and quad core is more than enough, for me at least

I think everyone knows that nothing beats nexus devices when updates are to be compared. But there are some people like myself who rather prefer usability and unique features than updates. I myself am satisfied already with ICS. The sole reason why I decided to get this and ditch my phone is that my phone doesn't officially support ICS and unless I see very significant changes I won't upgrade.
I have a nexus 4 and really want the HTC One. Only reason I'd miss the nexus is the updates.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
One smashes n4. Aside from that, as stated before, with HTC device you can run sense ROMs or AOSP ROMs. More choice. Also, Google makes a point to make sure nexus devices are not top-spec, officially. They do this cuz it's a development device. What good is it to develop on a device that only 10% android users have the specs to support? Also, I checked out n4 cuz all reviews said it felt Luke a million bucks in your hand. I thought, it felt like junk, personally.
From my Evo LTE, yup.
M7 no contest. I'd take a Note II, GS3, Lumia 920, or HTC HOX+ before I went back to the N4.
Monetarily the N4 is great for the no-contract price. In no other way would I pick the N4 as my phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38664009&postcount=9 (my opinion)
Who cares about prompt updates anymore anyways. Are prompt updates that important anymore? This is xda. We can have any update or Rom.

All comes down to price 349 usd vs 650 usd. P.s if you post this in n4 section everyone will say n4, if you post this in HTC one forum everyone will say HTC one. If you have enough for the HTC one go for it i've tested the nexus 4 it has washed out screen, bad camera , and very fragile BUT.... for the price the nexus 4 is a very good phone

Should I jump off the Samsung ship?

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a bit of advice...

It depends.
Why do you want to leave Samsung?
HTC One is excellent in my opinion.
Especially if you don't root Sense is miles better than Touchwiz.
The phone feels, looks and behaves as premium.
And the software is excellent.
I'm not sure about the battery, maybe the S4 is better (not sure).
About the camera there are situations that S4 gets better pics and situations that One is better and it comes to your needs. I'm talking about camera performance here.
Because regarding camera "lag", Zoes, video highlights etc, the One has the advantage.
