Insurance coverage? - Glass Q&A

Anybody know of a way to insure Glass against things like theft?
I'm just super wary of wearing $1500 on my face when it is so easily removed.
It's one thing to be carrying $1500's of cellphones on my person, in deep pockets -- it is another when it's just sitting idly on my face.

Do not buy the seidio innocase II

After reading such great reviews of this case I ordered it. I've been using it about a month and it's great. The rubber feel is nice, the case is durable and protects the phone well, very thin so it doesn't make your phone too bulky.
BUT
The damn rubber coating is flaking off all over this damn thing!!
I take pretty good care of my phones, there is no reason for this. It lives in my front shirt pocket by itself or placed on a flat surface.
Slowly the rubber coating is deteriorating and I'm left with a cheap plasticy case. I contacted seidio about this and received a "copy-and-paste" computer response to send in proof of purchase, pictures etc. It honestly isn't worth my time and am really upset on the garbage quality of the case. I'm going to pickup the silicone verizon case next...
I recently bought this case too, but I haven't experienced any of the problems you're describing yet. I don't notice any peeling on mine whatsoever, but then again I've only had the case for a few weeks. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Haven't had that happen to me. Had mine for about a month now.
I probably got a bad batch then, but if you notice it happening update your posts in here.
Had two of these (black and purple) for my wife and me, not had this issue on either and bought them in early July.
I have the same case, I've seen a few spots where it's flaking off or rubbed through. I will have no qualms about making them send me a new one when it starts to really look bad. I know some people that have already gotten 3 or 4 replacements. They are a good company, let them fix it for you - even if they have to fix it over and over again.
Rather than coming in here and claiming the case should not be bought by anyone, stop the drama and send them what they want so you can get a brand new one. Why would you spend that kind of money and then blow it off because you're too lazy to send them a few things??

It's good to know that they will cover it if this ever happens to my case, thanks for the info.
does this case push up the screen protector? i recently purchased a case from ebay and thats the problem im having. im having a hard time finding a case that will protect my phone without pushing up the sides of the screen protector
Same is happening on mine and I've had it for about 2 months. In the bottom left corner, the soft rubber is coming off significantly. My first Innocase was too loose so this is my second one. After they cancelled the car dock I don't see myself using it for much longer.

Unforturnatley it does push up on my ghost armor screen protector. The screen protector itself is slighty a little to small . But it is just enough for the case to catch the edge of it and push on it. If the screen protector was an exact fit it might not do it. But all of the protectors that I have tried are never an exact fit.
I don't have this case, but was seriously considering buying it. On amazon there's a review of a guy who said it scratched his phone all up (inside the case). According to him it's happening to everyone - "just check the forums" he says. When I saw the title of the thread I expected it to be about that, but it's something totally different. Soooo... what's a good case for this thing?
It's true.
I have this case and all around the front housing (the black edge) are scratches.
Mainly they are at the top part of the case and I don't even understand what caused them.
Though I still use the case.
i am experiencing this flaking too. it's looking like ass.
No issues with mine. Had it for 6 weeks or so. If it starts flaking, I'll buy a new case. Not like it cost me 50 bucks or something.

Not trying to get you all fired up or anything, but a good company doesn't only mean they have good replacement warranties. In my mind at least it means they make a good product too. I would definitely not be happy with any company if i had to replace their product every few months and get another one. Building a brand name starts with a good product and good customer service together.
I'm not a big fan of cases and sleeves because in most cases you can "see" and "feel" the phone; i have the zagg shield on mine and i have been absolutely happy with it.
I don't think I've had any of mine long enough to have the rubber flake off. Mine have all fit like ass, especially at the top left corner. I'm on my third case since June. The bezel of my phone is all scratched up due to the poor fit allowing the case to rub dirt/dust/debris into the phone. Seidio has been very prompt in replacing the cases... The first 2 times. Now they've apparently realized they're losing their asses on shipping (the same poor quality) replacement product and are expecting me to advance ship the case at my expense before they'll replace it. They're also refusing to replace it with a different Seidio product that, I've heard, doesn't have the same issues.
In short, I agree with the OP. Don't buy the case.

Full body. Be aware though that the curved edges and sides are not covered. So in other words if you drop your phone a lot this might not be the solution for you. It's also really easy to install the zagg shield on your own but if you prefer them to do it then its $10 extra. Cheers!
This is not to attempt to discredit the OP; I've had my case for 2+ months and it still looks great and functions well. There is some contact rubbing on the corners but then again i take the damn thing in and out of the holster 100 times a day and have dropped it a few times as well on brick.
Hey guys,
This is something I see alot of with iPhone cases at the Apple Store. The most popular cases, similar to how Droid seems to favor Siedio, is the Incase Slider Cases. These are generally plastic cases, with a matte-finish paint on them (my friend has the Innocase, and it's the same material). That paint is known to, over time, deteriorate.
For every customer that comes in with it flaking away after 2 weeks, I have one that comes in a whole year later with just a tiny flake. It depends on the batch, sometimes, and from what i've been able to see exposure to heat, sweat, and sun. The more it's exposed to those elements, the more it flakes away, I believe.
Also, if you're having problems with a case pushing up your film screen, you might not have it properly aligned. With the same aforementioned slider cases and the anti-glare film screens, if you're screen is even slightly off center to the right by a smidgeon, the case is super tight and pushes it up/causes those nasty bubbles.
So, you might want to try re-appling it and making sure it's perfect center.
Hope this is some helpful information.

[Q] Can you protect the screen without a case?

Having come over from HTC phones I have been reading with horror how easy it seems to be to shatter the screen on a Streak.
My previous phone, the Desire, was probably dropped a dozen times; back comes off, battery flies, but the screen is intact.
Personally, I find these neoprene / plastic cases hideous and really feel that they not only detract from the elegant lines of the Streak but make it look really cumbersome and unpockeable. The leather ones just make it another thing to carry around in your hand as you would not get one of those into your trouser pocket, and lets face it, bits of leather dangling off from your phone during a call can only add to the impracticality.
I really want to keep the phone as small as possible and to feel the quality materials in my hand, not rubber. Otherwise, why was it not made of rubber in the first place? I really cant see how Dells form plastic case protects the screen either?
My main concern is the screen (I am not worried about scratches on the body) and am wondering if a good screen protector could give the screen added resilence to cracking if dropped, because at the end of the day, those cases still leave the screen exposed dont they?
Has anybody a product to recommend or does this phone really need to be wrapped in cotton wool all the time?
i used mine withouta case for a good few munths drop it lots without any damage to sreen and been lucky i geuss but got a tuff love now
Yet you read some accounts of people dropping theirs once as soon as they get them and the screens shattering at relatively low heights.

This is what happens when your Nexus 7 falls. (+attempted fix)

I thought I'd share what happen to my Nexus 7 already, bit shy of 2 days of owning it. Hopefully this doesn't happen to you, but if it does, please share your photos and story.
Note: The Materials and build quality are top notch and comparable to a $500-1000 product. The "scratch resistant" glass is, rather easy to scratch. The metal bezel, is actually plastic.
I had it charging on a pillow when it suddenly slid between the crease of my bed and the wall. It did not even get to touch the floor.. Not sure what it hit. To tell you that I am one that baby's electronics, and usually when I resell, people are impressed how well the "used" device looks when they get it..
For those contemplating the need or not of a screen protector and or a protective case.
EDIT: I am seriously considering trying to fill in the nicks with grey epoxy, but reading the conspiracy theory threads about defects and such that might arise, I am not sure if I should in the event I have to exchange mine.. (so far so good)
FOLLOWUP: So I tried using plumber's epoxy to fill the nicks. Picture attached.
You know how you get sympathy pains when you watch a fellow man get kicked in the junk? This pains me to see.
On another note, my official case can't get here soon enough.
I just ordered mine, thank you for the forewarning

Oh laawdd! I'm gonna be walking on eggshells until my case arrives. My sympathies op
The Nook Color/Tablet has a metal (not aluminum) band that runs around the tab, so the aforeshown damage would've been avoided. Its front face also has a raised bezel (instead of edge-to-edge glass) that would obviate surface scrapes.
The downside is that it's heavy and large for a 7", and said qualities would be judged as "inferior" in reviews. People like edge-to-edge glass displays, and thin and light. They also like stuff for cheap. Something has to give.
Sorry about your accident. Screen protector should hide most scratches, and the corner damage is an aesthetic, not functional, mar. Take it as a battle scar for a (hopefully) well-used item.

I had a Nook Color, enjoyed the size and screen. It was nice for it's time. The bezel adhesive started to lose it's grip and open up. Returned it within the 30days.
I've grown rather fond/sentimental of "my" N7, the story behind getting it, and who gave it to me. Otherwise I have none of the other issues others have reported and consider to be lucky it's such a solid little guy. Since it's aesthetic and really just a corner that now allows me to feel which direction I'm holding my tablet in the dark (a feature). I was just considering filling it in with epoxy.
Oh man, that's a bummer. Sorry to hear that! I thought the scratch resistant glass would fare rather well, but I suppose it's food for thought for screen protectors. Sigh...
It saddens me to see that people are already dropping and breaking them even before I get my shipment notification email from Google about my own preorder.
Just get a case and don't worry about it. Now you won't have to be so careful with it. The first nicks are the worst, then it's smooth sailing.

That's how I was with my phone. "omgosh such an epic device want it to look perfect forever", but then I look at it now and I realize there's drywall compound in some of the creases of the phone's body from spackling the bathroom last week. I think the honeymoon with me and my crappy little low end Android has worn off.
Speaking of cases though, anybody got a recommendation for something that ISN'T a folio style case? I have a neoprene case to use but I'm curious if there's a hardshell case available that snaps on.
DUDE I feel ur pain!!!! id be on my knees crying..
That really sucks!!! My condolences.
i would buy a new one, that would drive me nuts

Suuuuure. I've never met a phone or tablet that can take a 3-4 foot drop directly on the corner and come out unscathed. If the nook color had 1/2" rubber around its body I could see your argument, but steel vs. aluminum is hardly an argument when you're talking about around 1/64" thickness. Then increased rigidity of the frame will actually inact more force upon the rest of the device as less is absorbed by the metal. There's a reason why your car is made to crush like a tin can when you get hit after all.
Any drop on the corner that doesn't shatter the screen is a win in my book. I know we never like to see any damage on our new device, but this is like slamming into a pole and having a small dent on your bumper.
I really feel for your loss. I'm about as anal as they come concerning keeping my devices mint. Little things like that just drive me nuts which is why most of what I have is entirely overprotected. Blame it on the OCD in me that I've probably spent at least 150 dollars on cases and screen protectors for my galaxy nexus alone.
The sad fact is, that even if it were made out of something harder, it would still incur damage. A nick, ship or the glass shattering because the device is thin, and when dropped, all of the weight is concentrated on that one corner. The amount of PSI on that spot on impact without a big rubber pad to disperse the force means it's going to get damaged. I also have a Nook Tablet, and I know for a fact that when it's dropped in the same manner, you will see some sort of damage. Either you will dent the perimeter ring of metal, chip the paint off it, etc. It's not nearly as fragile as edge to edge glass, but you will damage it.
That blows man. I wanted to share this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28869651

The wrapping alloy band is 5mm (0.2 inch) thick as measured with a caliper. It's robust.
>increased rigidity of the frame will actually inact more force upon the rest of the device as less is absorbed by the metal
Yes, the weak point is always the front-facing glass. But an edge-to-edge glass face design, as in most tablets to date, will fare more poorly than one without, cp. I feel good about the Nook's survivability from a waist-high fall. I can't say the same for any other tablet.
That said, tablets don't sell on the basis of durability.
>I wanted to share this thread [charging port damaged].
It's inevitable; usually it's the external connector that gets bent. As another said the micro-USB port is flimsy. It's another carryover from smartphone design.
Would suggest trying a 90-deg adapter to alleviate vulnerability.

Screen protector Rant....

I was at the Mall today and people were lined up at an "Armour screen protector" kiosk. I don;t understand screen protectors. They are paying $25 for a screen protector to keep their screen from scratching. But they are also playing $25 for a screen protector that WILL get scratched up and then maybe another $25 in 6 months to replace that "ugly" one.....all while at the end of the day delivering a pristine phone to .......someone else.
My take is I want to use the phone as designed. I have not found any screen protector that is as smooth and clear as the glass. I want to enjoy the phone not protect it from scratches. My screen is pretty scratched up from pocket carrying but when i turn it on they all magically "disappear" Only when the phone is off and in my pocket does it look like its used.
Now some will say they will get more for their phone when they sell them if they are flawless. I would rather save all the money spent on cases and screen protectors and sell the phone at a $50- $70 discount to market and in the mean time enjoy the phone as designed. When I sell them I explicitly state anal buyers and those who "wear" their phones should pass despite the price. When I buy a used phone i will take the discount for a wear and tear phone rather than a pristine one.
Plus one can always throw a screen protector on and "erase" all the scratches if they are that OCD about these things. My Note will sell for $290 all day long with hairline scratches all over the screen which is about a $50-$100 discount to what they are selling on Ebay used, I will throw it up with no reserve and a buy in now price of $270 and see where the bidding goes. I'm betting either it goes for $270 very quickly or it gets bid to $300. now I know there are cheap Hong Kong screen protectors and they may be good. But nothing is as good as glass......I even am aware of the glass screen protectors which i found rather ridiculous as they can scratch as well..scratched screen protectors look as bad as a scratched phone!
I did get one of those $3 Hong Kong "gel" cases but hated it as I could not get it out of the pocket. The phone is big enough without a sticky rubber case. If I drop it.... my bad. but $25 for a "screen protector? Really? I think the people who make the claims that screen protectors are "better" then the glass...probably sell them at huge Margins....I am guessing 300-400% or more. Fear sells and OCD people line up for $35 "screen protectors" at Mall kiosks. I don;t know about many but scratching a $25 piece of olohenfdgc mastedfde" plastic would piss me off. That is not supposed to scratch its scratch "resistant"

I totally understand your point. 25 dollars is ridiculous for screen protector. I do try to have to get one around 10 dollars though.
It is more of a feeling like if your car gets dinged or scratched. I dont think I ever cared about scratching my phones before the smartphone era though.

People have become conditioned by cleaver advertising to viewing these tools as Jewelry for profit. The funny thing is these are not items we even keep a long time. The Zagg people really have created a business from nothing but fear and obsessive compulsion. I have witnessed people who would lose sleep if their phones got dinged. This is not a $25,000 car here with a door ding. Its a $600 cell phone, a tool, I guess I am not an OCD type about anything. I don;t understand "glass" (on glass) screen protection. LOL
I simply use things and don't obsess over them except that they work perfectly and do what they are designed to do each and every time. When I buy something used I want to know one thing. Does it work like it was designed? Not is that a small ding I see photo on the corner in that 200% zoomed or hairline scratches on the screen. When someone starts asking those questions on my sales I tell them to move along and spend another $50 or $100 bucks.

You get a giant scratch going straight down the middle of your screen.
Its horrible, you see it during games, movies, browsing, EVERYTHING.
In short, I'm not making the same mistake twice. I'll pay an extra $15 every 12 months to see a fresh scratch less screen.

My Note screen is full of small visible scratches. The flip cover created most of them since I live near the beach sand would get in there and scratch the heck out of the screen. I bought the phone used and it had the flip cover on it. I took it off and went naked. Many here would likely break out in sweat if they saw my screen and its really not all that bad LOL.
I have couple deep ones as well but I don't see them when I am using the device. A scratch has to be pretty much a crack for me to be bothered by it while using the device. A lot of mental anguish for nothing. I can understand someone buying a $4 screen protector and dealing with any issues it causes that may take away from the phones display or user experience to avoid the dastardly scratch. But people are being conned into spending $25 to $50 for a device that will keep the real screen no one is using pristine for the next owner and it will get scratched easier than the screen itself !
A case I can understand for those who fear dropping their devices and cannot replace them. But the Note is too big already. cannot imagine it with a case even though its clumsy size and one hand handling begs for one.The Iphone looks like a Key FOB next to it.
I guess I will never understand agonizing over minutia only to sell a pristine phone for another to enjoy and not stress over. Although if a scratch on the screen of a mobile device is the only thing one really worries about, I have to think they have a great life going LOL...

So this. $25 for a screen protector is highway robbery. ..but you can get protection in the event of *it* much more reasonably. My evo4g I never scrern protected, my note2 I did as the S-pen is an unknown quantity in how hard it can be.
At work my phone lives in a case and holster. Need my phone at work, and a naked phone falling on concrete floor is a shattered screen waiting to happen.

The OP obviously hasn't tried an SGP Ultra Crystal... but should. The S-Pen feels like a skate on ice right after the Zamboni worked it's magic!

OH hell no...No way I would pay $20 for a screen protector.. Got to buy a screen protector to protect the screen protector........What if the screen protector it gets scratched? then I am out $20 and my phone looks like the Shyte I was paying $20 to prevent!! Then another $20 has to be blown Before ya know I have $100 in screen protectors protecting a phone thats dropping in value faster than a hooker at a bachelor party.
Screen protectors are very much a personal choice. There is no right/wrong decision on whether you should use one.
I would say for the everyday office commuter, they are probably overkill. When a desk or a conference table is the harshest environment your phone is ever likely to see, there is no need to sped $15-$20 on a screen protector. You don't wear steel-toe boots and a hard hat to the office for the same reason. It is important to protect your head and feet, but you don't need that level of protection if the environment your in doesn't provide that type of danger.
That being said, I work construction. I work in a technical field (so a phone like this comes in handy), but I'm constantly around dust, debris and micro-particals. I work on hard, filthy surfaces; I climb ladders; I'm around power tools. It just isn't a very nice environment for consumer electronics. I use a screen protector. I also wear a hard-hat and steel-toe boots when I'm on the job. The protection is needed.
In regards to gorilla glass, it really is just a matter of physics. Sure you can rake your car keys up and down the screen all day long and not see a scratch. After all, car keys are soft metal. But a single grain of sand, a small rock, or a piece of silica debris can make your $700 phone look like a cutting board. All that is required for a scratch is an object with the right hardness combined with the right amount of force. This is not hard to achieve.
Another thing to consider: As your phone gets older and more used, you will develop wear spots. These are micro-patterns that develop in the glass over the most frequently used parts of the screen. They are hard to see, and can only be seen in the right light, but they will develop. They would develop even if your screen was made of pure diamond. Friction will eventually wear down any surface. But as the above poster points out, how long are you likely to own this phone before you upgrade? You may not have to worry about this.
Only you can decide if a screen protector is worth it for you. For me, I believe they are. For others, not so much. The fact is, there IS a legitimate market for them and it is not all sensationalist nonsense.
Thats my $0.02

My auction for my immaculate Note 1 ended on this past weekend at $400+30 shipping. I had a screen protector and case on it since I bought it on launch day last October.
I completely understand where you are coming from and sometimes I wish I were more like you, but I'm not. I wish I can just toss my phone around and not give a damn as long as it works, but I can't. I, like some of you guys mentioned, have OCD when it comes to screens and damage on my electronic devices. I can't stand the thought of having a scratch or ding on my device, but I can deal with light scratches and dings on screen protectors and cases. Just knowing my phone is in immaculate condition puts me to ease. For me, it's more of a mental state of mind. I think this applies to some people here too.
Some people do it for the resale value, which I understand. I did not expect my phone to sell so high, but I guess the condition of it really attracted the buyer.
There are many other reasons why people get screen protectors. I hope you understand that not everyone is the same and maybe you can look at this from a different point of view. We all have our reasons and preferences.
It's all about peace of mind. Plus, screen protectors come in many different flavors to suit your preference. You can get completely clear ones that you will never even notice or matte protectors that drastically reduce greasy fingerprints and glare. You can get most good quality protectors for around $10-15. So I would argue that it doesn't make sense not to get one for such an expensive touch screen device. I do agree that the Zagg protectors are terrible, but for some reason they are the only ones carried by retailers like Best Buy. Many people swear by them though.
Let me also that you get what you paid for. Some people say "hey the screen protector sucks" well that's probably because he paid 2 dollars for it on Amazon.
When you get a screen protector, quality matters, don't judge based on those that China dime store crap.
At this point if you do your research and apply it right, it feels and looks like nothing is on your phone.
Plus, better resale value and peace of mind.
Don't ask me how, but I dropped a fork right on my screen, it warped the hell out of my screen protector and I freaked out, pulled off my screen protector, and not a scratch was on the glass.
We all make mistakes, and accidents happen, I for one would rather play it safe, and seeing as a measly screen protector for a small amount amount of money is all that separates my phone from having a non repairable scratch on the glass forever or a simple screen protector dent that can be replaced, then I'm fine with using them.

Uh, I just bought a pair of SGP ultra crystal protectors on amazon for $14 shipped (I have amazon prime). So, I guess we're in agreement that I, too, wouldn't pay $20 for a screen protector.
The flaw in your logic is the part when you say "What if the screen protector it gets scratched?" Remove the word protector from that question, and now you know why we use screen protectors. Would cost you a lot more than $7, or $20 for that matter.
We can all agree that 25 bucks for a plastic screen protector is over priced....
But really, I don't quite comprehend how a sensible person can state that a screen protector is "a waste of money" or "worthless" or follow the logic that simply because the protector will itself get scratched that somehow that correlates to the use of one being illogical....
The WHOLE point of the protector is insurance that your screen won't get scratched AND has less chance of getting damaged in a drop where the screen is impacted.
If you don't want to use one fine... but to argue that this is somehow a scam is like arguing that airbags are a scam, or that race car drivers don't need multi-point seat belts. They may never get used but you won't find a driver in the world that wouldn't wear one just in case.

Equating Screen protectors with seat belts or multipurpose seat belts in a race car makes my point. Lets see.......... a scratched screen or dead body....Yeah that's a good analogy and appropriate for the anxiety some people feel about these devices I think the rant is more about being anal bout a device people don;t keep for sometimes even 6 months. Then bump a sell for weeks because no one wants to pay top dollar for a year old device anyway, Very few Note s are going on Ebay for even $350 . If someone wants to pay $400 for a Pristine old Note God Bless them. I believe most would rather pay less than $300 and cover up a scratched screen with a $3 screen protector if that bothers them. But that's just me. Personally I would pay less for a wear and tear phone than a pristine one because I use the phone. I don't wear them. If it looked that bad I would skinnit.
$25 screen protectors are a scam IMO.
If one believes they will drop their phone, put it in a good heavy duty case. No screen protector will prevent a screen from cracking if the phone is dropped on one of the four corners the corner, It may only suffer one or two cracks though
I understand what you say. I never buy screen protectors, mainly because many of them degrade the quality of the screen, but also like you said it doesn't feel as nice to the touch as glass. But maybe I'll change my mind if I see that magical screen protector that can't be detected on the screen and feels as good as glass.

I guess I want to enjoy the phone as is. Slim slick body. Slick glass. Slips in a pocket easy and undetectable for a huge device. The only thing I know that will mar the glass is sand. That is what made the hairline scratches on mine. But even most of those scratches cannot be felt with a fingernail I have two small ones that can be if one tries hard enough. The stylus is completely safe and way softer than glass
The screen protectors they were selling at the mall felt like smooth Zagg. Rubbery and they did show a difference in screen quality. I was astonished at the prices more than anything. I thought Best Buy's $19.99 screen protectors were a stretch. The box looked really important though.Marketing is a wonderful thing.

Please get a case/screen protector. This thing is fragile.

I don't know how the other reviews were able to beat the hell out of this thing, but I was on day 12 of my 14 day "trial". My case and screen protector was in the mail, I was getting it the next day. Well on day 12, my phone fell from a counter, onto the linoleum floor. 4 foot height. I didn't notice it until I was putting it on that I managed to crack the screen in the corner:crying:. Thank god it was not spiderveined, or in the touchscreen area (right on the edge/corner).
Also, when applying my just like glass screen protector I did my cleaning, and held my phone horizontally at eye level to make sure it was dust free, and lo and behold, micro scratches galore.
It is hardly noticeable and decided to try to swap, using the excuse I want the white one instead, but they didn't have any in stock. So, I decided to take the high road and am just dealing with it.. I will replace the glass when the hardware warranty runs out, or if it spreads.
With this situation I am trading in my sleek, thin case and going with the otterbox commuter like I had with the past phone. If I can find one.
I don't care what videos show people smacking keys, knives etc on this Gorilla glass, I had the Droid RAZR before this and the screen naked, and it is more pitted than a teenager with a bad case of acne.
Sorry to hear that sometimes when u intend to crack it stands well asif a tank and weirdly smallest falls crack it
I regret that I did not get a screen protector before I got my phone.
I was told the CORNING® GORILLA® GLASS was unable to be scratched on.
It was totally WRONG!!!!!
After using this phone for two weeks, there are some minor scratches already.
Wow. I'm glad when I purchased my phone, my carrier recommended and installed my screen protector for me.
Although I've dropped my phone a few times, I haven't experienced any scratches or anything but I will definitely look into buying an otterbox as well!

Sorry to hear of your difficulties, but I think your recommendation is too broad. I prefer to avoid the cost and bulk of a case, or the image degradation of a screen protector. I've used my phone extensively for a month, carrying it in my pants pocket or backpack, and the screen has no scratches. And I've never dropped and broken this phone or any other. The desirability of a case or screen protector really depends on what conditions your phone is subjected to.

So here is a true story, I had a motorcycle accident. I had all my protective gears but I still had to go through surgeries...my rest, spine extra because my rest, spine was not starched but actually fracture or broken.
So does the screen protector works against starches but you still get a screen cracked.....so in the video they show keys and knife banged against the screen, that's true....but not when you drop it......
I got two cases, one is the ultra thin while the other is a dual layer kickstand.....I like the ultra thin case to help against body starches, while the dual layer just to use for kickstand, you have to be very careful against these phones.....I had dropped my Galaxy S3 with the screen protector and case, my phone was not scratched, but when I turned off the phone and or in ultra black screen I was missing some pixels.

A knife or a set of keys is not a test for scratching glass. Try getting some grains of sand from a peach or a rock...
Even if you don't get a case for your $700 phone, get a screen protector. Hell, I even left my phone untouched and unactivated until my screen protector came.
I've had the nexus, s3, and ip5 and never used a case before but I think I'll have to make an exception for this phone. It's soooo slippery! Plus the fact that it's this big won't help either.

I made the mistake with my Razr with the original corning glass (which is made 45 mins from my house.. shoutout!!). I didn't know that sandpaper was the devil.. I was usually cautious, kinda. I would keep keys and coins in there if it was an accident, but was always nervous of having stuff in my pocket, with phone, and leaning against something putting pressure on the device and breaking the screen.. that never happened but what did was I actually had a piece of emeroy cloth (like sandpaper) in my pocket with my phone. 5 mins later and I had a scratch. I think this was like 4 weeks in of having the device.. the other scratches I mentioned happened later.. yes, aside from the emeory cloth scratches, the rest you couldnt see when it was powered on, but they are there, and can get worse.
On a side note, my wifes Razr was ran over by a truck with furnature (she was helping her brother move) and not... one... scratch...
I was kinda pissed, but happy at the same time.

I HATE screen protectors, I had the philosophy that you know what, it's my phone, if I want it to show wear, I want to to do it. Not have it perfectly preserved, then sell it in perfect condition at the end of its life. But I have to admit, this "just like glass" is really well done. Unless I am looking for it, I can't tell it is there.

Exactly. Suppose a case/screen protector would add 5-10% to the cost of my phone. Then unless I would otherwise break 5-10% of my phones (which I haven't been doing--I've never broken one), the protection will cost me more, in the long run, than doing without it will cost me--even if I eventually do have a mishap. (And that extra cost is in addition to the cases' extra bulk.)
Hence my point: the desirability of a case depends on the conditions that your phone is subjected to. What's good for one person may not be good for everyone.

having a case with a good grip also decreases your chances of accidentally dropping your phone. and also the probability of impressing the ladies.
Had mine for 11 days with a simple belt clip holder. The phone slipped from the holder 3 feet above a tile floor. Small crack in the corner as well. Fortunately I bought the monthly Best Buy insurance and they gave me a new phone for free after waiting 6 days. First time I ever bought monthly insurance and it saved my A$$.
I agree. The only thing i dont like about this phone is the plastic bezel around it. The titanium looks beautiful and its a shame u have to cover it up.

That's not a good analogy at all. Unless you sell your phone today or very soon, you're assuming you will never get a scratch, bump, or ding on the phone for the entire duration of you owning it. That's like saying you will never wear a jacket when it's cold because you won't get sick...

The only difference between you and the OP is luck.
Don't fool yourself by thinking you take far better care of your phone than someone who has got scratches.
Don't make the same mistake I made. Get a screen protector.

The other thing to consider is that the cost of a case and screen protector will most likely equal or exceed the cost of replacing the backing and faceplate from ebay. Id rather enjoy the naked phone and replace those pieces once they are scratched up.
