Dont you think this phone got old too fast? - LG Optimus 4X HD

Just as the title says. This phone hasnt gotten the best of time really, its just been 1.5 years and it got replaced by Optimus G, Optimus Gpro, optimus G2 and other iterations of LG. WHat makes me kinda weary is how bad this is compared to the likes of S3. I mean that phone got the 4.22 and still has a n active community, I hardly see any posts here.
I percieve this as unfair because this phone, i feel, is better than some if not all midrange phones that are available today. Some people got shafted by issues such as dust underscreen but I never had that problem.
Would this phone still be a good buy compared to a midrange phone such as Moto G? The moto g is cheap and powerful but what about build quality?
I must say, the moto g is the only midrange phone that is extremely worth to what it is offering, most midrange phones new or old are too expensive compared to old flagships, like comparing the S4 mini with our phone...
I think that too many phones are pumped out just for the heck of it. There is no real evolution compared to last year.
Bigger sizes + lots of gimmicks that could easily be added with a software update and so on.Most seem to have bigger batteries and beter screens but heck, I can buy a bigger battery and the higher PPI does not bother me because I cant see individual pixels...So, whats the point in upgrading?
The only phone that seems innovative on LGs side is the G flex, it seems both from the material side and the way it looks as a change that is noticable and useful.
You know, I wish old flagships at least did not die because 500 other flagships got released. Things age too quicly.
And no, apple is not the answer. i cant stand apple products... I hate their design,iOS and their pricing is ridiculous.

Yes ..this phone was the most under rated phone .
Its actually better than s3 ...
Feeling sad for the 4x hd users ..
Shame on you LG ...
They haven't even provided software updates

Yep
I'm getting the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini soon (read 2 weeks), just because i want a phone with the same price range (~300 euros) and one which does actually gets new updates

The problem with this phone is due too LG releasing too many top of the lines model at very rapid succession. Plus most Android manufacturer are too focused on their hardware and less on the software, making continuous software updates not exactly a priority. Samsung seems to be aware of this and are improving whilst LG & HTC are still in this trajectory. Sad, really. This phone is really good but the software is holding it back.

This is business! They put out, back to back, new phones and neglect software updates so that we, stupid consumers, could spend money on the new phone! If they update software for a great period of time, there would be no need for new phones and technologies and they would ran out of business! Simple as that...

Apple made 3 year old phones that are still compatible with the latest software updates, also the latest iDevices have less ram than the latest android whilst also ran faster. The problem in android's core engineering used to made manufacturers reluctant to update their software since the hw might not be able to handle the software. But then Jelly Bean came out and ran faster in older devices, and things should change accordingly. But they're not. So yes, it might be their business mindset that needs to change.

I agree to this.. Someone mentioned that they even can get KK 4.4 on their Samsung Galaxy 1!
I'm also thinking about buying a new phone, but it's sad since the Optimus 4X is a good phone! I don't want a phone with the actionbar or what they call it (the back, home and menu buttons on-screen). And IF you gonna buy a new phone these days, i'm thinking it's smart to go for a phone with 1080x1920 screen. I'm thinking HTC One..

Don't buy a new phone.
The industry wants you to think that you have to upgrade your phone every year, but really, what are you missing?
Is it that important to have 480ppi instead of 320 although you can't really tell a big difference? Is it necessary that your processor is twice as fast, although you can play pretty much every game completely lag free?
Back in the days people had their cellphone for many years, they were solid and bug-free. I think it isn't good to support the development of the ever-growing mobile industry, this isn't good for the environment and it isn't good for your purse

Surely our beloved phone got old too fast, but I guess it's perfect time to sell it for quite higher price and add about 35$ (in Poland) to get for example SGS 3. Then you'll get much better support from almost all sources (SGS 3 is receiving official 4.3, so..). I really hoped that our O4X would be easily developed by any dev, but now when I see that we won't even receive 3.4 kernel with OTG capability I must say, that in my opinion we already have our peak of developement (of course I know that unofficial 4.4 is comming, but for me there is no diffrence with causal kernel).

Why would you buy a s3?? I mean it is also an old device with similar capabilities. Nexus 5 or even a nexus 4 seems like a better choice. But, for god's sake guys, did you buy phones for development purposes or to use, which, in my case, I bought it to use as a smartphone and it hasn't disappoint me too much, exact, may be other than battery.

I've saved up too much for this and I have the confidence in our developers.

Both Nexus phones doesn't have SD card slot, so it's not worth me, currently I'm using built-in 16GB + 32GB card, also N4 - tegra, and here it costs around 500$, nexus 5 - 700$ (sick pricing). I need a phone that would in some cases replace a PC, so OTG is must have. I wanted to stick to this phone for 2 years, but for now it's impossible, and I really liked this device, it looks so beautiful.

This will be my last phone of LG...Had HTC Trophy 7 before this one and it received updates regulary issued by Microsoft. Now I have this phone which on paper is amazing and its good in RL too, but I am stuck with old version of Android just because LG wont bother their overpaid devs to release new versions. So basically my LG is in graveyard regarding software. Next time I will go either with Nexus line from Google or go back to MS...at least when they upgrade system all manufacturers receive it...

Just shortly. The only thing i am missing probably is battery of something like 3000mAh.
Everything else fits price and in compare with other phones is just perfect.
You shouldnt request full developers forum as this phone is not a popular model. However with such users population it is just great to have at least few devs!!!!
For those who talk about MS. Probably that is wrong forum to talk about it...

Thoughts on 2X and your next phone?

The phones over a year old now. I only picked mine up used almost half a year ago for 200 USD. The phone's price really plummeted in just over half a year didn't it? Even now it hasn't dropped further as it hit its rock bottom way back then. High end phones that are older and with less specs cost the same as this as its really unpopular. An example being the Galaxy S.
So in a way its a pretty unsuccessful phone. Reasons? Software support has been terrible, suffering from radio issues. The stock firmware was appalling for a long time. Then the announcement ICS wasn't coming which soon after you saw the price hitting rock bottom. Leading to LG to counter its previous comment and proceed with ICS. Which it probably had no plans to before the backlash. Since the update was due rather late and has since been delayed a quarter.
Hardware wise its not bad. But still outdone by S2's larger screen, double ram and better camera.
All said i'm extremely happy with my first Android especially considering what I paid. But only with the developer support providing the best solutions. If I were a stock user i'd be sorely disappointed, only feeling better for the price.
In terms of my next phone, I want a larger screen 4.7ish but not pocket busting like the note. A better camera but equal to 2X is fine. More RAM because Opera Mobile keeps shutting down when I multitask out for a second, even with an extra 48mb ram hack. Amoled would be nice but not necessary, mainly for its benefits if its sunlight legibility is good. HD is unnecessary in my opinion.
As it stands I probably won't be upgrading for awhile until the likes of the S3 gets cheap. Except its design looks unprofessional. Optimus 4X anyone? :-D They couldn't make the same mistakes again right? Right?

i am happy with the phone. the only complaints are the screen outdors and the camera (well not the camera itself but the plastic cover that ruins the quality).
i dont even dare thinking about a new phone but seeing how fast the market moves today's pick will be outdated in 2 weeks.

some people arent that rich to change expensive phones every 12 months.
My next device will be WITH a good battery, a SD card slot (dumb htc with their one series..almost made them perfect), a good camera (likes of SGS3 or more likely htc one x), and an ARM cortex-a15 based cpu (or krait). and quite importantly, a wolfson micro sound chip (also supported by supercurio ) i dont want screens as large as 4,7 inches though
oh, and i hope it will be a nexus...i want good updates... fuuuu LG
this would be a freaking dream phone. but i aint buying anything until the 2x gives up on me, i still really like it
So far i had 2 android phones with the optimus being my second one. I have noticed that all those "specs" do not matter. What matters is a good software. Therefore i would move to a nexus devices when my optimus gets completely destroyed or really useless. No need to keep throwing money on phones if they cannot completely replace my laptop.
I will go for a SGS2 or 3 or a Nexus.
Hopefully soon. Tired of all the probs with my LGOS
currently, my o2x running temasek kang, it give me what i want to do
still waiting for the stable cm9, then will use it about a year
my next phone maybe the galaxy s4
I think I'm buying a S3 or nexus. And what Arkara said, I agree that specs don't matter as much as the software support.
Seeing as the S2 a friend of my has, still running stock since launch and no factory resets: Smooth as hell, fast and long battery. Galaxy Nexus is also stable.
Maybe my phone has a bad chip or something like that but the FD issues are to much and the battery life is overall the same for me no matter the BB or RIL. No more Tegra for me.

Nexus seems like the popular choice among us. I think specs matter still otherwise you wouldn't be after a high end phone. I personally have grown accustomed to CM's flexibility and features so i'm not really after software support. Except as we know in our 2X case it lacks drivers for us to update to.
Of course a stable good software release is important, afterall custom ROM users are a minor aspect in comparison to sales. But in the S3's case Samsung are trying to differentiate and add value through the software extras. That's great for most but if your not using it you're paying for nothing.
At least the idea behind the S2 was hardware and just the right software to make it run. This time around Samsung are making moves inspired by their biggest rival in their eyes, Apple. They like to poke fun and criticise Apple but they would prefer nothing more than to be them. The design, the marketing and the software are all in their footsteps.
What do 2X users here think of the iPhone anyway? I think it's like our polar opposite in the high end. The super expensive overrated and over hyped hardware with good closed software popular phone compared to the piss cheap higher spec phone with miserable software and success.

Well, they sure as hell have a long way to go as far as design goes. Pretty much all android phones do. They are butt ugly. The Optimus 2x is actually one of the prettier ones imo! The Galaxy S2 for instance is a design disaster.
I'm not a fan of the iOS, though. When I use it, on my Ipod Touch, I get the feeling that I am being treated like an idiot.
I will have a close look at the ASUS Padfone.
If it only had a 720p screen, I would have bought it.
When the Rumors about 5 new Nexus devices for Jelly Bean come true I hope ASUS makes one of the phones. I love their build quality and design. They also are the fastest when it comes to updates and patches.
I also think that the Optimus 2X is among the prettiest phones. This was the reason I picked it instead of the Galaxy SII (the price was similar at launch).
With CM7.2 UNOFFICIAL (I also use temaseks build) the phone is very good and I get a good battery life lately since I turn my phone off and back on right aufter I unplug it from the charger in the mornings. The only thing I don't like is the Battery life when I use it a lot for webbrowsing and games.
My next Phone will have a 720p display, a bigger battery and more RAM.
SD Card slot, swappable battery are things I would very much miss if they were not available on my next phone. Optimus 4X maybe, Huawei D Quad maybe, Jelly Bean Nexus possibly or the Padfone?
I´m tired of the 2x....
...because of the politics from LG.
The stects of that phone were really good, but as it was said before: Good software ist more worth than good hardware.
I think my next Phone will be the next SGS or a Nexus.
What i need:
SD-Card
huge RAM
720p Display
LTE
NFC
good Cam

Opinion on this phone from an LG hater

I've absolutely bashed LG for every phone they made because in all honesty, theyre crap. They are horrible cell phone manufacturers and they should stick to TV's.
After seeing the Optimus4X I was pretty impressed, but it was an LG so I wouldnt buy it anyways.
Then I saw the Optimus G. Hmmmmm theyre getting somewhere, the specs are there and the phone actually looks nice. But its STILL an LG.
Then the Nexus 4....holy cow this thing is amazing. PRICE, specs, build quality (that i can tell from videos)
But its an LG...........
IDC
The fact that it doesnt have LTE or a removable battery or expandable storage was nothing new. They had already said that it was not going to happen. Except for the LTE I mean. Thats not that important. Only ATT is a GSM carrier with LTE right now and they hardly have any. So pretty much no one cares..
BUT ITS AN LG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I could just care less. Maybe they had to use them to keep the price down. Its ok Google. With that firepower, it could be a ZTE or something crappy like that and I would still buy it. Put a case over it and cover that branding LOL.
But all in all, how can you hate a phone this cheap with these specs from Google?
If you do, im sorry but go away. go buy an iphonecrap
I was literally about to pay full price for a galaxynote2. but then this was announced.
I can buy 2 of these if i want for the same money.
Enjoy the phones my friends. I will.

LGs typically sucked because of the horrible software builds. This being a nexus pretty much eliminates that big issue.
The s4 pro has great battery. The optimus g gets 8 hours screen on. The issue is the prerelease software the reviewers got. Expect the final version to do similar if not better the optimus g.

I'm in the same boat, always bashed LG ever since I recommended the original LG Optimus (A budget phone when it came out) to two friends and never heard the end of it.. apps were crashing without reason, the whole phone would lag up randomly and it was just chaos, I ended up installing CM7 on them both and it stopped some but not all problems.
I didn't even pay attention to the LG market up until recently, I thought well if it's LG then it will have a childish UI and be built for idiots. Wow was I wrong with this one. I haven't been this impressed with the design of a phone since I got my iPhone 4 on launch day. The iPhone 4, if anyone remembers is the only iPhone that I actually appreciate because it was completely different and built to look good while remain more powerful than the competition at the time.
I am going to buy the Nexus 4 as soon as I can and hope that it's just as good as the hype makes it out to be, I've already found a buyer for my S3 i9300 (not LTE version) for a cool $400 which gives me enough money to get the 16GB for $399 here in Australia and only spend $20 on shipping. But if it's anything like the original Optimus, this phone will be finding a place in a drawer and I'll go back to Samsung, Exynos sources/documentation or not.
TL;DR This phone better be good or else my newly regained faith in LG will diminish as quickly as it came.

I'm still using my LG Optimus. It's been the most reliable phone I've had. I've thrown this thing, quite literally, across rooms before, and it's 2 years old and I've yet to put a single scratch on it. Development has been amazing, I'm currently running a completely stable CM9 on it, and there is MIUI, AOKP, CM10, CM7, CNA, you name it, that are all slightly less stable. It might not be the best phone in the world, but it's good. My phone before this was a non-android LG phone, and it was pretty solid too. Software sucked (it was a feature phone. All software sucked for them lol) but once again, the build quality was solid. So far, I've only had good experience with LG Phones, and I'm guessing this Nexus will be a fine addition.

No but I hear people are fine with that since it has 128gb internal memory, LTE and a reinforced aluminum back and dual removable battery

Make me feel good about Nexus 4 again

Hello Dear Nexus 4 owners and friends,
Holiday greetings. I am finding it so difficult to stay satisfied with my Nexus 4. With all the great deals this past weekend and then the Moto X (Android Central Phone Of The Year) for only $350 Wednesday and next Monday I just am having identity issues with my current phone. I mean it "feels" fast enough, I get GREAT battery life, I've got KitKat, and mods.... I just want more. My ideal phone is the LG G2 but thanks to good ole T-Mobile's un-carrier foolishness I can't get one for free with a contract or upgrade anymore. The Moto X seems nice but it's got the same size screen and the camera appears so so.... I don't want so so... I've already got that... I want bad a$$ blow your mind fast with awesome camera and a solid battery life to boot.... Then at the end of the day I think overall My Nexus 4 has been good to me today. It easily gets 14 - 15 hours battery life with 3+ hours screen on time... Plays games fast... I think if it only had a slightly better screen and camera I would be happy... Anyone else going through this during this festive shopping season?
Thanks folks!

Well, you have listed all the best things about nexus 4 there and to add, active development support from this community. If you're still unhappy about it then buy a new phone. LG G2 seems to be a good choice if battery life and camera is what you're after. Nexus 5 is good too though I'm not sure about its battery life.

GF has the LG G2 and its a nice phone. wish development was more active for it. soooo wanna put CM or whatever on it. im not a big fan of the UI, but she loves it. Mind you shes an ex-craPhone user. Imo its a good phone on looks, battery, and features. i love my N4(miss my Gnex as well). its a great phone and lovethe development going for it. yea camera is eh, but i dont take that much pics. enjoy the nexusness about it. dislike the rear glass back(gf dropped it out of my hands while taking my car keys. thank god for my slip on case). only thing i want is a bigger SD. the G2 come with a 32gb SD from tmobile and the N4's 16gb makes me cry knowing that i have 2gb of space left. If you like the stock feel of android, pick between the Moto X or the N5. If you want a new phone with something different you got the G2. have you checked out sony's new baby yet? step-padre has one and its a nice phone.
Got a nexus 5, it doesn't feel as premium as the 4 does with its curved glass and solid feel.
Battery wise, I only use 2g with data off and WiFi only, my nexus 4 edges it.
You're having issues with yourself, not with the phone. Get a psychiatrist.
Well I just learned that with the t-mobiles uncarrier plan and with the jump thing every 6 months when you trade your phone in they squash whatever you owe on your phone and let you upgrade to the next one without a penalty.
So I'm not sure I'd exactly call it foolishness. I think the LG G2 is 0 down right now and 17 a month. . . you can either keep it longer or trade it in at 6 months...

i think that anything that is not nexus can't be considered an ANDROID phone, so I'll stay with n4 because the n5 doesn't offer anithing that can justify the deal.

I think 17 is AT&T G2?
"Jump" is a way to generate more revenue out of customers...
Current price of T-mobile LG G2 is 24 a month(never seen it drop to 17, the most is 50 off- 0 down) 10+24+taxes add up to about 37 a month...
You would be constantly paying more after 6 months ($10 jump fee plus the monthly payment on the new phone or existing phone.)
I bought a like new LG G2 for $450 total 2 months after manufacturing date.
I think it's a good deal...
Honestly I really love the Nexus 4. If I had T-Mobile coverage at home, I would not have to upgrade. However Nexus 4 does not Wifi-calling which I realize I really need when I'm at home. The camera and faster CPU are added benefits. However Nexus 4 seriously is fast enough to me and the LTE is nice when I go out. I was planning to switch to AT&T for a free phone and better signal but their 25% price increase forced me to drop the idea.

Got to agree here, its just a phone for God's sake. You want a faster better phone? Then what? A better faster phone? Then another? Save some money and take up meditation or something before its too late!

Well for me other factors to consider is that I'm broke.... Lol. To get a new phone outright I would probably have to sell my Nexus 4 and 2012 Nexus 7 tablet. I'm already paying $20 a month on my wife's Galaxy S4. So I don't wanna up my cell phone bill yet another 15-20 dollars a month for my phone. I guess I just get bored easily. Lol. Had the HD2, Then Galax S2, now my Nexus 4...i just get bored and wanna check out new stuff. At one point I said "The Nexus 4 is gonna be my last phone"..... Guess not.. I will probably figure out something after the new year. I can make more changes with my TMO plan in January. I don't wanna just run out and buy a Moto X because it's the cheapest... Don't really wanna settle.

I'm just gonna sit here with nexus 4 and await the new camera apis to come out. Really don't think anything out right now is worth buying to upgrade from the n4.
I don't mean nothing I better but nothing is going to be worth the money to outright buy vs the slight gains I might get

Feel good about Nexus 4 again? Still loving my N4! 4 Reasons below!
1) NEXUS 5 PORT 4.4 KRT16S odexed 26/11/2013 Fully merged with MAKO binaries
2) Qualcomm-optimized Dalvik libraries from MOTOX 4.4
3) 36dpi nav bar
4) KERNEL][GPL][N4] franco.Kernel - r197
The Voice activated Google Now! Alone makes it worth its wait in gold for me when driving and need to send email or SMS! The N4 is still a great phone! Yeah would love the N5! But not got the funds or the inclination to replace a device that has not once shown, its not up to the task it is set! My Wife has the Galaxy Nexus! Another great phone that is still performing for what she needs and its her i will be upgrading first to the N5. Think too many people get side lined by the speed of how quickly our phones are surpassed with newer and shiny models! Its like the camera on phones! What do people expect? Your not going to take your wedding photos using your phone! My phone is and always will be a tool! Not a fashion accessory otherwise i would have bought into the iOS crowd (Mac user so not Anti-Apple). The N4 is still performing and with the great Dev's on XDA don't really see me getting bored anytime soon!

Oh I didn't realize that that wasn't the price. I called yesterday about looking at an upgrade and was offered 0 down and 17 a month on a GTO and on a nexus 5. Maybe those were just holiday deals or something. Also I don't ever talk to regular customer service I always go straight to the I want to close my account department.
To me its not a bad deal though that means every 6 months at that price I'm spending about 120$ .. and get a new device.
However all of that said in understood I'm not looking to go from my Nexus 4 for a while. I'm running a stock kitLat rooted with faux kernel and love it.

It's a freaking phone, it's not supposed to replace your wife. Just do something else when you're bored with it. But it's your money, if you can afford another phone, go for it.
I have been down this path before, getting a new phone like every month. But with the unlimited customization I can do with the Nexus I couldn't get bored with it. I love the speed of KitKat with ART, I don't even feel the need to get a Nexus 5 yet. I can't see myself dealing with TouchWiz, Sense or any other third party bloated UIs again. If I have the urge to, I can install skins or theme it, just take a look at what people can do in this thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1990251
The fun with Nexus devices is the tinkering and hacking you can do with it, without losing a large chunk of your wallet. If you just want the latest, greatest and fastest, you will be chasing an endless target.

My reasons:
-Fully working sweep2wake and sleep with NEO kernel, LG G2's knock knock feature got nothing on this.
-Faux color and sound kernel features
-PSX rom (I'm normally not convinced by roms that claim to be fast, but this is clearly fast translated to real experience, not just benchmarks. Just hope it'll continue to be supported in some form at xda.)
-The vast amount of roms and their features.
-And the number one reason: MultiRom

Replacing mako...

I'm feeling sad. Because I know my mako will soon be spreading its wings and going to a new home. My contract is up and I promised a friend who had an S4 nicked only a couple of weeks after getting it that she could have my N4 when my contract is up for renewal (I wouldn't really want anybody to be stuck with a Desire running stock 2.2...) But my real question and purpose for posting here is what do I get to replace it? I know there's an obvious answer and the Nexus 5 is probably what I'll end up with, but I thought I'd throw this out there for the advice of you lovely netizens
I've played with an N5 in the O2 shop and it really doesn't feel like much of an upgrade to the 4. I'm not particularly fond of the very generic industrial design or the in-hand feel. I'm sure given a bit of tinkering and a custom ROM it could be quite nice, but with the stock ROM on the N5 (obviously) and the modded colour profile on the N4, I actually prefer the LCD on the mako! The camera is much better on the 5, not that I use it much, and I suppose the battery life ought to be a bit better. It really didn't feel any faster but I'm sure SlimKat + over clock vs stock is not a fair comparison. It just seems silly to be stuck with a phone for 2 years which has already been made obsolete (in my mind) by this years' MWC launches and which doesn't really represent a big upgrade from the phone I have now.
So what about the S5? I've pretty much discounted it due to the fact that it's a Samsung, which means AOSP ROM support will be poor, it will suffer from SOD and probably also fry its eMMC after a few months Although I'm sure there are people willing to endure that for a removable battery and a microSD slot, I'm not one of them. Funnily enough, several of my friends who own/owned S3s have said they'll not buy another Sammy...
The Z2? Well, I guess it's likely to have good AOSP support so long as I can get my mitts on an unbranded one (no prob, I'll just renew through Carphone Warehouse) but it's also GIGANTIC and I'm not sure whether it uses the easily broken dragon trail glass and that daft easily scratched plastic outer layer like the original Z.
I presume there will be a new HTC One (two?) very soon, which has a chance of being a more reasonable size and probably better build quality than the competitors but I don't know what the situation with bootloader locking is like on current HTC Qualcomm devices? (Assuming it will be Qualcomm) After my One X debacle, I pretty much told myself I wouldn't buy another HTC but I have had many over the years which have been great so it seems mean not to forgive them for that one terrible device.
I presume LG won't be in on this round of upgrades (aside from phabletty ones) but I had considered the G2 due to its larger battery but otherwise similar hardware to the N5?
Yeah, I guess I'll just get an N5.

If you cant wait (until nexus 6 is released), i would suggest new htc one or lg g2. Lg g2 has a great screen size, its sharp, but too saturated cartoonish colors, if you like that. Awesome battery, 5,6 hours of screen on time, great camera. it has a great devs support but its not working as smooth as nexus 5. So in order: nexus 6, new htc one, lg g2 (or nexus 5 if you really like aosp and smoothness).

I heard so as well.
Hardware and Price definitly make it a great Phone.
After a quick personal test I have to say coming from a Stock/Custom Rom the UI is really ugly, but there are custom Roms.
OFF: Just saw that the 4 years old iPhone 4 got the latest version of iOS and it runs awesome considering the specs of the phone (tested my self). I wander if Google "got it"?

So? My equally-4-year-old HTC Vision runs KitKat. I mean, sure, Apple officially released their latest OS for the iPhone 4 (and hopefully the performance will be acceptable this time) but I've never run a shipping ROM on any device I've owned since my original iPhone, anyway, so the crappy long term support of Android device manufacturers not a big deal for me. Also, there seems to be a lot of pro-Apple sentiment for long-term device support but I don't think that's a gesture of kindness or 'different' business behaviour to other manufacturers. Really, they have to keep support, since they keep crummy old devices on the market a lot longer than other manufacturers. I know a few people who still have remaining months on two year contracts with iPhone 4s, but I'm fairly certain that's not going to be the case with any Android handset which was launched around the same time.
Incidentally, I think I've settled on the G2. Given that the cost to me will be the same with an N5 or a G2, it seems silly not to go for the bigger battery, (much) contrastier screen and better camera since I'll run CM/AOSP either way. It means dealing with nasty Samsung-like glossy plastic, but given that it's already good, I'm thinking the battery life ought to be insane once all the LG OEM crap is gone

I think lg makes the best short term support phones.
They wont see life beyond 4.4.2. I wouldnt buy a lg without checking the activity in the xda forum. Because lg is very crappy updating the android, and if theres no support from the comunity, because of a locked bootloader, for example, then its all over.

I think (perhaps too optimistically) that all the current Qualcomm-based devices are so similar that even after LG give up, some form of CM/AOSP support is pretty much a given. Especially given the shared roots with the Nexus 5...

That's what we're seing in the Optimus G forum. The development follows the lead of N4, but not at the same pace. My GF has one and simply love the lg UI and the miniapps. But the device is great and stuck in the 4.1.1
There's a lot of great devs there, like XboxfanJ, and many many others doing a great job porting things out, but it's a shame that LG is failing to provide a update to any other android version. Even 4.3 would be great in that device.
I had to root my GF Optimus G just to use fstrim, because it was becoming laggy as hell. And while google is doing a magnificent job puting the Gapps avaible in the playstore, she misses some nice features, like the notifications listener, or immersive mode, but at the same time, being with the device since november of 2013 (here in brazil mid class people just have to be one generation or two behind every single eletronic stuff, because they are expensive as hell) she doesn't want to void the warranty.
The really bad thing about LG is that they launch their flagships with old android versions, update short after the relase and then go with the excuse that the device has already seen a major upgrade.
OG came with 4.0 and then was updated to 4.1
LG Flex came with 4.2
G2 came with 4.2
And that's the way they do their business.
If I were you, I'd wait about a month longer. See if the new Google Edition phones start popping up. I quite like Samsung's hardware, but their support absolutely sucks. For me, SGS5 GPE would solve that issue.

No, I literally will not buy Samsung hardware on principle. I've seen too many dead S2s, notes, S3s, etc. That is a company with zero concept of quality control, to keep releasing b0rked eMMC controllers, generation after generation. Plus, if you begin to read the CM device managers' posts on Exynos support, you see what a ****ty attitude they have for the development community, even if most current devices are Qualcomm based and a lot easier to work with. Plus I'm not and never have been enamoured with their hardware in general. Sadly, the G2 looks and feels like a Samsung, but I guess I'll have to live with that. Oh, and what good is a GPE unless you're buying your device outright? AFAIK a Nexus 5 is the only chance you have of getting a shipping 'stock' android device here on contract.
Edit: I reaslise I probably came across as a bit of an arse in this post. Sorry, Samsung make me angry. It might be worth waiting for the new HTC One but I'm fairly certain the camera will be rubbish and it still has a small screen with a massive bezel (or it's a massive device, not sure which )

Hmm, it's a nice theory. But you could easily end up waiting forever with that outlook. The G3 isn't even rumoured to come out for several months yet, else I'd be waiting for that. And the Nexus 6 (I doubt the name unless it's a phablet... It'll probably be a new Nexus 5) is sure to come even later, the Nexus launches haven't exactly been immediate availability gigs, have they? By the time that come out, people will tell me to wait for the Samsung GS6 and so on. Mobile phones are launched so close together that anything you buy will be 'obsolete' a month later. Frankly, I could gladly live with my Nexus 4 for another 2 years. The only reason I'm replacing it at all is to give it to somebody else. So with what is available now, it seems pretty clear to me that a G2 will do the job just fine.

People shouldn't tell you what to do, they can only make a suggestion. It's about what you want from your phone. If you want software optimized with hardware, get most recent updates and roll the smoothest devices on market, go with nexus line. My brother has LG g2 and with that beast of cpu and gpu, it's much slower then my nexus 4 (on both aosp rooms and lg ones). I would never buy g2 just because of that. Also Samsung devices, bloat bloat bloat, and sluggishness. I would buy n5 in no time because I want speed and fast updates, and a camera to take quick and decent pictures. Yeah battery is a little bit weak but, there are kernels for that

Poll - If S5 Prime is released this year should we take action?

Just interested in how current S5 owners will feel if Samsung brings out an upgrade to the current S5 this year after stating clearly this was not going to happen. Personally I would have not purchased the S5, kept the S3 and waited for the super model.
Also do you think we should do anything about it, spam Samsung's facebook account, write letters of complaint, or will we just have to lump it?
I know this has been discussed to death already, just interested in numbers and whether as a group we should do anything about it, please dont discuss anything else here but that.

I doubt anything will make a difference, plus most people probably didnt understand the Exynos issue on facebook, they will however understand being lied to, this is why I think spamming facebook might achieve something this time, if only to make a statement.
I really don't see why do you care, your S5 will be less powerful than when you bought?
What is the problem?
LG g pro 2 and they release G3
HTC m8 and they will release htc prime
Sony z and they rilis z1 last year
Samsung s5 and they release prime
Its about providing the latest tech to customer at the earliest available time and tech war among them and apple.
So if s5 is not attractive for s4 owner, they can now buy the prime version. S3 owner already happy upgrading to s5.
Do u want samsung to delay s5 to july waiting for the better tech in Q2/Q3 2014? Or htc/sony delay m8/z2 waiting for the same? S5/m8/z2 is using the latest tech available to mass produced on Q1 2014. Why complain?
Technology always moving fast.

You know the same happened with the
S3, I9305 - got an upgrade to I9306
S4, I9505 - got an upgrade to I9506
and in a few months..
S5, G900 will get an upgrade to G906
This doesnt mean that the original version is junk, it's still great, but the technology is advancing so fast that for a flagship to hold true to its name (best of what that company can offer), it must be upgraded more often.
For example, Sony's official policy is to bring a new flagship every 6 months.
This is how things go.
You just enjoy your s5 and quit thinking about this. It's a great phone, and will remain that for this year at least!
for me the s5 was a hesitant buy, it was a fairly decent upgrade on the S3 but not the S4, I had an S3. However I was still on the fence as there were rumours that the prime would follow. I then decided to wait but shortly after Samsung's CEO stated categorically there would be no prime, so I bought the S5
No, my S5 wont suddenly loose its potency as soon as the S5 prime comes out, I wont even care the S5 is not the top phone anymore, its that this new phone is going to be a lot better and I bet it will be much more on contract than the S5, therefore I would have had a far superior phone if I had just waited a while longer.
Given the choice I would have waited, I dont like being lied too either, this is why I have a problem, thought more people would fee the same way, obviously not.
ho hum
This is the exact reason I dislike sony

for me the s5 was a hesitant buy, it was a fairly decent upgrade on the S3 but not the S4, I had an S3.

You know that 6 months after the s5 prime, the new s6 will be launched, right?, a lot better.., and the cycle continues....... .......

This! And months later a new phone exceeding the Prime will come out, and months after that another Prime (or whatever they'll call it) and the cycle continues till kingdom come lol. Doesn't bother me if they release a Prime version at all.
Some leaks suggested that it might come in limited quantities so it may just be a korean availability..just like last year with the LTE-A version of the s4..

Same... I really hate as a customer the 6 month release cycle.
But as someone else mentioned technology moves so fast that it's the only way that your latest flagship remains competitive to the rest of the latest offerings from other companies.

I highly doubt that Samsung would make such a stupid move. To release a flagship device one month and then release ANOTHER flagship device which would essentially supersede the S5 2-3 months later would be utterly stupid. I am personally not a fan of the Galaxy line to begin with, I simply got one recently because I got temporarily bored of the iPhone 5S I had and wanted something new to hold me up until the iPhone 6 comes out, but I know a lot of my customers (I work for T-Mobile) will come to me on a daily basis wondering what in the world is going on. No, the S5 won't just magically become outdated hardware that doesn't work, but to a lot of people it will be a slap in face because a lot of these said people want the "latest and greatest" not the "latest and greatest....last week."
the flagship phone (S) model has, up until now had a 12 month release cycle with a couple of minor exceptions with slight differences in versions, not six as some of you have stated here, I'm not including the note Range here, I've never wanted one.
I honestly couldn't care less how often they release phones, the more the merrier, I just don't want to be lied to, I simply would not have bought this phone had Samsung remained silent about the rumours.
This is the first time a company has outright lied about a release date in order to ensure their current phones sell, this for me is a step too far. If they had remained silent I wouldn't have bought it, I would have waited to see if the rumours panned out.
Obviously this is all assuming Samsung do release the Prime, there will be a lot of egg on a lot of faces if it turns out just to be the note 4 or something else.
This could be other manufacturers spreading the rumor also to get Samsung owners mad at Samsung.

Finally, some sense in the forums.
Here's Samsung's reply in advance to all those who want to start a revolution.

Remember the Galaxy Round? It was a bent N3 at a 35% price premium. A "better" more expensive SGS5 takes nothing away from the version anyone's using. Name one mobile device maker that announces in advance a new device while they are still trying to sell current ones? People find out by rumor and leaked stats which is what started this thread. What grounds would anyone here go after Samsung for? Failure to maintain flagship status? If the new device is stylish and metal I'd imagine there will be more happy that Samsung's finally offering a premium option than those pissed their current phone's been upstaged. Personally, I have no interest in a metal phone for durability reasons; better yet paying a premium for it. To each their own.

Dont get me wrong, the S5 is great, I am very happy with it, i'm not up for a metal case either, however given the option i'd have waited and taken the QHD screen and 805 cpu, the issue here, if the Prime is released is that we were lied to, mislead into buying the S5 when there was a better model just around the corner. This is unacceptable behaviour in my opinion, its not that a new phone is coming out, its that they lied about it to protect their sales.
Perhaps its a sign of the times that so many people think this is ok, normal even, getting shafted appears now to be the norm.

Those were tweaks, not upgrades really, small CPU / RAM speed / size hikes, the prime has a next gen CPU/GFX and a QHD screen, not the same at all.
