[Q] Updating Sprint Samsung Ativ S Neo to Microsoft's direct GDR3 download - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've looked through the threads on updating the Ativ S Neo to GDR3, and I really want to make sure I properly update my phone to GDR3 from Microsoft, not from Samsung, so that I can still do the interop-unlock.
What do I need to do to get the Microsoft GDR3 update? I know that Sprint's already pushed the Samsung update, so how can I ensure that I'm getting GDR3 directly from Microsoft?
Thanks!
ETA:
It turns out my fears were for nothing - I thought Sprint had already pushed GDR3, but it appears they haven't. I did the developer unlock and installed the preview for developers app, and the only updates that came through were from Microsoft directly.

very helpful. thanks.

[Q] firmware update included with windows phone updates?

will the firmware be updated along with the regular windows phone updates or do we have to update ourselves manually? I know microsoft said they will be adding software/updates from the device manufacturer included with the windows phone updates.
The updates each phone receives are phone specific. That is to say that in addition to the OS update there can be phone specific updates such as firmware updates.
OEMs can send firmware updates out, whether or not they will is up to them
yes, my "Omnia 7" firmware was updated by Zune
My "Omnia 7" firmware was auto updated by Zune on 30/03/2011 (Samsung Specific Update), now is I8700HUIJK1 (previous was I8700HUIJID)

It makes you wonder if we can force the Samsung specific update onto our phones with ChevronWP7 NoDo Updater....
Does anyone have an idea on why certain phones get the Samsung update and some dont?
Anyone have a idea of that?

[Q] Samsung ATIV S Neo [SPH-I800] latest ROM?

I’ve been looking for a ROM (.WP8 file) for the ATIV S Neo that has the latest firmware which is 2216.14.01.2
The only one I’ve found on this forum has the older 2216.13.07.6 version. If there isn’t a ROM with the newer firmware is there some other way to flash the newer firmware other than over the air?
I'm in the same boat, and I've been unable to find a solution. Fairly sure that it is an OTA update only, and MS says it's controlled by the carrier.
Annoyingly/Interestingly, Samsung lists the Kies software on the support page for this phone, and that software has the ability to download and flash firmware...but Kies is, by everything I've read, only for Android devices. Why it remains on the Samsung support page for this device is beyond me.
Of course, I went ahead and tried it, couldn't connect to the phone as expected. Asked Samsung about it and then told me to send the phone in for repair without addressing the software question.

[Q] Interop unlock on SGH-t899m

I have a Samsung SGH-t899m that is on the Telus network at the moment. I need to get it interop unlocked so I can add the registry tweaks needed to see the full filesystem.
Can this device be interop unlocked in the manner of the others that I have seen?
Is there anywhere I can buy a device that already has interop unlock and full filesystem access?
Thanks,
Kevin
The original WP8 interop-unlock hack was developed on a phone exactly like yours, as it happens! However, it doesn't work if your phone has the firmware version that normally comes with GDR3, or if it has any version of WP8.1
However, -W_O_L_F- has produced some fake carrier customizations (part of a ROM, but not a full custom ROM) that can be flashed to such phones, and will do the interop-unlock for you. It's pretty straightforward. Check the Dev&Hacking subforum for threads about custom ROMs or CSCs or MBNs.
Thanks for the help everyone!
So it turns out I had to buy a sim card so I could get access to the dialer to get the Diagnosis app unhidden. Fortunately, it looks like my phone has GDR2 and is carrier unlocked already. Yay!
Now if I can just figure out how to get all capabilities so I can install the native webserver all capabilities version.

If you're using an interop-unlocked Samsung on WP8.0, just run the standard process in the interop-unlocks thread; it's not too complicated. Install an app, run it, install another, run it too.
already on 8.1.xx.xxx
I have the SGH T899M and already went into 8.1.xxx.xx.
Reg edit and hidden diagnosis menu have since been removed after gdr3 I believe, this we know already. I have also purchased the developer account and have dev unlocked this phone to allow use of deployment.
However we cannot have full app capabilities with just a dev account. Is there any safe rom to downgrade to be able to make use of reg edit , interlop and gain full app rights? I am sorry if this has been covered somewhere else but I have been searching everywhere for this info before I made my post here.

[Q] Updating AT&T S4 Active to Android 4.3+

Hello,
in my company we are developing an android app. The lowest android version this app supports is android 4.3.
The company bought several testing devices including a AT&T branded Samsung Galaxy S4 Active. With Android 4.2.2 (Buid Number: JDQ39.I9295UCUAMF3)
I tried it for a while now, but I can't get the OTA Update to work. It says "Software update interrupted. Try again in 24 hours".
I can bypass the 24h lock by changing the date of the phone. But even after ~30 tries the phone is not updating.
There is no SIM Card in the phone. Is a AT&T SIM Card needed to update the device? I am not able to get one, because I am located in Germany.
Can I update the phone manually with Kies or something?
I don't have admin right on my machine so I need to know what to do, before I contact the admin to install a required software.
Could a blocked port be an issue? I do have access to the internet, but if Samsung (or AT&T) uses some non standard port, my company could be blocking it.
(Root is not an option.)
Kind regards
Cliff

Hi Cliff. I can't say for sure, but my guess is you can't access the OTA because you're not in the right region (someone correct me if I'm wrong). As far as I know, you shouldn't need a SIM to update, again could be wrong. More importantly, there are other ways to update. You could probably try Kies, but I wouldn't recommend it, it seems like users always have issues with Kies. I would strongly recommend you try updating the phone with Odin, a tool by Samsung that let's you change around your phone's firmware (among other things) when the phone is in download mode.
There is an exhaustive guide linked to here that thoroughly explains how to go from any version of android (official, for this phone) to any other version. In simpler terms, that link shows you how to manually update, which is what I think you're looking for. Also the files you'll need to download are located here. Hope I've helped, and good luck updating! :good:
Oh, just re-read your caveats: you almost certainly don't need a SIM for Odin to work, and you definitely don't need root either.

Thank you for your answer. Yes, maybe AT&T does region lock the update -.-
I've used Odin on my old Galaxy S2 some years ago.
I'll have a look into it and decide if this is the way to go.
Odin will do it as long as there are full install files for you to use.

You need an AT&T SIM card in the phone in order to install AT&T OTA updates. You can't use Kies to update because AT&T won't let Samsung post AT&T firmware on Kies. So your only option is to use Odin and the guide posted above.

att galaxy s5 wont update

Hi. My fiance has the G900A galaxy s5 and it will not update. Its on 5.0 lollipop. Ive been trying to update it to marshmallow for months now and it won't. It always says software is up to date. It has enough room to update cause I know marshmallow is a big file. Does anyone here know why it won't update?
Its never been rooted or tampered with at all.
Anybody??
I'm having the same issue
I'm having the same issue, however, my daughter's ATT S5 is on Tmo. I put an ATT SIM in it yesterday and it showed the update available, but won't pull it down because we can't turn on her WiFi. I wiped the phone and restarted and still cannot turn on WiFi. Now I'm looking for a way to run the OTA update over ADB.
I had a similar issue. I missed one or two previous OTA updates and found that my phone would not update to 6.0 Marshmellow. AT&T store could not assist and was referred to Samsung employee at Bestbuy whose kiosk happened to be not working. I tried with Odin, Kies, and Samsung Sync all of which do not work since ATT does not supply them with their firmwares. They all just showed my phone as up to date. I found a thread on how to manually update via emergency mode. I followed the directions and downloaded the firmware. Dropped the file into my external sd card, named it update.zip, and rebooted in emergency mode. I was able to update with one of the in between firmware and after that then allowed me to use the OTA. I am on an ATT S5 active. I bet you would need to do something similiar since you're still on 5.0. I believe there was 2-3 in-between updates before the latest.

Updated do not show up unless a valid AT&T SIM is in the phone. For some reason it checks to see if you have a valid AT&T service account before accepting the request to connect to the OTA update server. You will not get an update otherwise.
