Much like AT&T and T-Mobile locking their devices as well? Sure you can unlock the phones but you have to be a customer for X amount of months, and that's the same with Verizon. Much like how AT&T for a while didn't like anyone side loading applications on their Android devices? Much like AT&T not allowing their iPhones to be unlocked?

Yah but on a att or tmobile phone you can simply buy the code and voila you are good to go. You unlock a vzw phone and you still cant use it since they put custom software that specifically blocks u from using it in the U.S. so when you unlock it its still not really unlocked. Its a douche move.
Reread what I said, and think harder about what I said. Regardless if you can pay or not. It's still locked from the moment you purchased it. You have to wait Months to get an unlock code or pay someone to unlock it for you. Just because Verizon locks you out from using it from other carriers there are way to adjust it. You could always purchase a milestone which is the same thing right?

Actually, most unlocked AT&T and T-Mobile smartphones won't work on 3G on the other's network. Different bands. Same sort of attempt at locking the phone from being used with other domestic carriers just like Verizon. When the companies pay for an exclusive within the country, they want to do their best to protect their investment and keep it exclusive.
This also applies for GSM carriers outside of the US? I live in Barbados and we use 1800 I believe, was looking at picking up a D3 unlocked once the bootloader lock had been circumvented.
Actually I was referring to the carrier lock that needed to be removed for US bands.

according to the wikipedia entry it does not support 1800Mhz bands =\ If I'm not mistaken, that's the same as Tmobile in America for UMTS 3G bands

Regardless of where you buy your phone it will be locked to Verizon. Verizon will provide an unlock code to customers based on certain prerequisites. This code will allow you to use another carrier's sim cards while outside of the US, but you can not use any US based GSM providers.

If it has the Droid 3 name (which means it's the Verizon version of the phone), the SIM slot will be locked regardless of where you buy it. Some versions released in other countries (like the XT860 4G in Canada) may or may not be SIM locked. That remains to be seen.
But all those restrictions are software based, yeah?
According to GSM Arena, the Droid 3's hardware supports HSDPA on 3 of the four 3G frequencies, including the two that I think AT&T uses (850/1900), and one that I think T-Mobile uses (2100), and it supports 2G GSM on all four frequencies.
If the bootloader ever gets unlocked and we get custom roms, will that potentially remove the carrier restrictions for GSM networks??

Potentially.
The only other way is to have the required files from Motorola to unlock the bands, which aren't publicly available. Team Black Hat evidently has what's needed to do that for the Droid 2 Global and the Droid Pro, but you have to send your phone into them along with $100 to get it done. Maybe there will be an option like that in the future for the Droid 3.

I seriously hope so. I messed about with the Droid 3 at the Verizon store and I really liked it. I'd love to be able to use it (or Bell's version) on T-Mobile.

Yes, a non-Verizon rom can solve the problem. A lot of Chinese user bought Droid 3 from ebay and flash it to China-Telecom rom (major carrier in China) and get all bands unlocked, no GSM unlock code needed in that case.

Is the restriction in the rom, or in the radio file?
There's a CyanogenMod 7 alpha version being developed, and people are reporting that something in its build.prop gives them better gsm reception overseas. Would it also allow a US Droid 3 user to use a US GSM carrier, such as AT&T?
This is probably a really stupid/simple question, but how locked down is the AT&T version of the Moto X? I'm interested in jumping to T-Mobile and am off-contract on a MVNO carrier. Would I be able to take a MotoMaker version of the Moto X and unlock/run it on T-Mobile without any issues, if I bought it outright?

no because the motomaker edition still can't have its bootloader unlocked.

If you paid for the phone outright they will [should] give you the lock code. Worst case is you can go onto any number of sites and get the code for $10 or less.
The ATT version works fine on TMO as long as you aren't in one of the few remaining areas that hasn't been 're-farmed.' HSPA on AWS is in very limited use now, but markets that still depend on this protocol on this band will not play too nice with an ATT version. Most of TMO coverage though has been re-farmed so that LTE runs on AWS. These areas are fine. If I recall (don't hold me to this) all TMO markets will be re-farmed by the end of the year.

No difference, same model. I'm using t-mobile motomaker on at&t with LTE just fine. Just don't let them change the IMEI on their system if you get a new sim card. Tell them to leave whatever was on there, or you'll get a plan without LTE. This applies to dev edition as well.
There are many discussions and many answers to this question. The answer I saw the most was to get a T-Mobile version for use on T-Mobile. The reason is the T-Mobile version supports a particular band for HPSA+ that other versions don't support. If your not in an LTE area, you will fall back to EDGE if your phone does not support the HSPA band needed. I can't confirm, only passing on what I read. I bought the T-Mobile version.
It appears as if you intend to use it on AT&T so it might make no difference. Why can't you use Motomaker on AT&T? Have they discontinued it?

Thanks. Understood that your not confirming but reporting what you've observed. The reason why I would choose T-Mobile and use on AT&T is simply because I want the freedom and flexibility to move between different GSM carriers and their MVNOs just like I am able to do on my Nexus 4.
If the T-Mobile version works on a particular HSPA+ band that the Dev Ed does not, yet has all the other bands that the Dev Ed has, then that would make the T-Mobile phones a better and more flexible phone imo. People who need to root or unlock would feel differently since they have different priorities.
I really want to be able to use T-Mobile since they have the best monthly pricing (especially a family of four) and I love how they have shaken up the market, but T-Mobile indoor building penetration is so poor at my current residence that I really need to go with Straight Talk or Net10 with an AT&T sim, yet if I move or the coverage improves I would switch to T-Mobile.

Does the t-mobile Moto X allow you to tether on AT&T without restriction?
I'm planning on ordering up a MotoX here shortly and have been wondering about the DE vs Tmo question too. After a LOT of google searches it seems they are the same phone with the Tmo version supporting extra bands. According to this article there is NO carrier branding or bloatware on the the Tmo version. The article also states that the Tmo Moto X comes sim unlocked with an unlockable bootloader via Motorola's unlock program. Given this, I cant understand why anyone would order the DE and not take advantage of the Motomaker customization.
There is NO difference at all. Same bands, same internals, same everything. The DE is more expensive because it's the 32GB model. The tmo one IS sim unlocked (some people don't believe that), and has an unlockable bootloader. Doesn't have a carrier logo stamped on the back either.
As for T-Mobile USA vs Dev edition.. From what I know, they support the same bands and both are SIM Unlocked. While both allow you to unlock their boot loader, doing so on the T-Mobile USA device will void its warranty where as unlocking the boot loader on the Dev Edition does not. That is why some would order the Dev Edition rather than a 32gig T-Mobile version.
As for T-Mobile vs ATT versions...

later in that discussion, someone else says... "the T-mobile and Dev variants have the same LTE bands (B17/B4/B2), so they'll be equal. On AT&T (in the US), they'll both do just as well as the AT&T variant. Bands 5 and 7 aren't used by these operators in the US." So not having LTE Band 5 & 7 on the T-Mobile US X wont be a factor unless you are traveling to a non-USA country that uses Band 5 or 7 for LTE.
The T-Mobile can unlock the boot loader, where as the ATT variant can't.

That make me think if I can do the same.

It can make your head spin, but from the thread it appears T-Mobile X and Dev Ed X are the same, but AT&T X has them beat with LTE Bands 5 & 7, but that's moot in US since 5 & 7 are used outside US.

I should add, from what I've gleaned from what people are reporting in this thread, is that the
1) T-Mobile X and Dev Ed X, have an HSPA+ band that the AT&T X does not.
2) Therefore, in the US, the T-Mobile X and Dev Ed X are fully functional on AT&T's network.
3) But AT&T's X will be lacking some HSPA+ capabilities on T-Mobile's network.
Again, I'm not confirming or asserting any of this as fact, but only trying to summarize as best I can what we have been discussing.

Are you absolutely sure about this? Do you know it for a fact, or have you just read it somewhere?
I contacted Motorola today, to verify that the t-mobile off-contract version indeed was sim-unlocked, but they replied that it WAS sim-locked, and also was carrying the t-mobile logo on the back.
I think it's really hard to figure out who to believe, since many are reporting that it comes sim-unlocked, but wouldn't Motorola be the one to know for sure?
I am going to buy a Moto X at Mondays sale, but haven't figured out if I should just go with the dev version, or try the t-mobile version, which may or may not be sim-locked.

If you gain any further insight into this between now and Monday please do report back to this thread. I have zero knowledge one way or the other, but this is the first I've heard that there is any branding on T-Mobile X.

I bought a t-mobile motomaker moto x. Mine arrived the 21st. For a FACT it is unbranded and sim-unlocked. Using on AT&T. The phone has nothing to do with T-mobile other than it came with a T-mobile sim card.
edit: as you can see the phone has no branding.

Yes. I'm sure. As another use posted above me, the device has NO tmobile logos, and is Sim UNLOCKED. I've put an ATT sim inside and it works fine. Moto chat is useless, they don't know anything about their own products. Get the motomaker tmobile version unless you don't care about colors. Then get the dev edition because unlocking the bootloader doesn't void the warranty on that one.
Tmobile doesn't really sell this phone, moto does. Tmobile didn't touch it at all, it's the developer edition with 16gb of storage and without the "Developer Edition" engraving.

Republic wireless phone only works with republic wireless.
Start with your carrier then go from there. If GSM and you NEED root i suggest t-mobile or dev edition so u can unlock bootloader and always guarantee root.
What carrier are you on? As the other guy said, if you have a GSM carrier (AT&T, tmobile, other mvno's of those carriers), then go with the tmobile version. You CAN unlock the bootloader and root it, and it comes sim unlocked so you can use it on att/whatever other gsm carrier you want. If you have verizon, then get the CDMA dev edition.

I want it as a non contract phone. Currently I'm on straighttalk and they have a system where you buy a sim from them. But I may go elsewhere. I'm debating between a moto X or a nexus 5.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm repeating questions, but I'm not from the US.
So I'm not too familiar with mobile phones being locked and sim locked and things like these.
My question is, I'm thinking of bringing a Moto X into Singapore for my daily use.
Just wondering, according to all the above comments, I should bring in a T-Mobile version instead since sim and bootloader is not locked to any carrier?
And I got one more question
All these different carrier version, the radios are the same? or do they all differ slightly? I'm asking because in Singapore, I think the radios here are a little different from the US

So I'm not too familiar with mobile phones being locked and sim locked and things like these.
My question is, I'm thinking of bringing a Moto X into Singapore for my daily use.
Just wondering, according to all the above comments, I should bring in a T-Mobile version instead since sim and bootloader is not locked to any carrier?
And I got one more question
All these different carrier version, the radios are the same? or do they all differ slightly? I'm asking because in Singapore, I think the radios here are a little different from the US

The radios all differ slightly. And yes, you should get the tmobile one since it's sim unlocked. I don't know the bands of your carrier, so you might have to look it up and compare it with the US bands.
Ok just checked. Seems like only 3G will work in Singapore. LTE here is band 3 and 7. whereas T-mobile seems to be just on band 4.
I want to get a Moto X that would work if I decided to switch from T-Mobile to AT&T. My first preference is to buy it from Best Buy (I have some gift cards) but the guy at the store said if I bought a T-Mobile Moto X from them it wouldn't work if I switched to AT&T because it would be locked. From what I understand, T-Mobile can and will unlock this device for me if I ask them (nicely) meaning I could then use it with AT&T. Is my understanding correct?
My other options are to buy one from T-Mobile or get one from Motorola's website. Same question with these phones: Even if they are locked to T-Mobile at first, can I get them unlocked and use them on AT&T?

Friend..the best way to do it, is to purchase an unbranded, no carrier Moto X from Motorola Website..then you can use whomever you wish..I'd suggest the Developer Edition..otherwise you'll probably have to purchase a "branded" model..
Tip: do everything in your power to purchase an "unbranded" unlockable device..
Here is a list of devices that can be unlocked..look in Moto X list..which can be unlocked..I don't see AT&T listed as unlockable..but they do offer the Moto X..but if I was to guess..I'd say theirs is also unlockable.. but verify this before a purchase..
But..if your budget doesn't allow for the price of a Moto XDEV..then certainly consider the new Moto G 4G LTE..the two are VERY similar is size, and the G will run right along side with the X..I have both..and a budget certainly will justify the new Moto G..and its not carrier branded, runs LTE blazing..consider the Moto G..I have one on AT&T..all my devices are now on AT&T..but of course, depends on your area, to which carrier..

I don't know that there is a "T-Mobile Branded" X, and I don't think T-Mobile sells the X directly (at least it isn't on their web site).
Your choice, is the GSM UNlocked (includes T-Mobile sim) from Moto Maker web site, or the GSM Developer Edition... why?
These are the only way to get a Moto X that supports HSPA/HSPA+ over AWS (1700mhz) that T-mobile uses. History or why is this a consideration: When T-mobile started rolling out their HSPA/HSPA+ network, they did so on AWS(1700mhz) and are the only carrier to do so. While they are re-farming their 1900mhz from EDGE to HSPA+ in many areas, that isn't complete, so if the phone doesn't support HSPA/HSPA+ on AWS, it will fall back to EDGE in those legacy areas which remain.
Now, what is the difference between the GSM Unlocked and GSM Dev Edition? Kind of simple...
The GSM Developer Edition comes only as 32gig with black face, woven white back, silver accents (buttons and camera ring), and says Developer Edition on the back.
The GSM Unlocked (includes T-Mobile SIM) on Moto Maker can be ordered as 16, 32, or 64gig, and the face, back and accents can be customized, along with other customization.
BOTH are SIM unlocked out of the box. Both can be bootloader unlocked, however doing so voids the warranty on the GSM Unlocked version but not the Dev Edition.
Both of these editions support the same GSM/EDGE/GPRS/HSPA/HSPA+/LTE bands and frequencies. In fact, they are the same "board' inside, use the same roms, etc. i.e. other than the look of the outside & customization options, and bootloader unlocking voiding vs not voiding the warranty, they are the same phone. (hence the GSM Dev Edition being the preferred choice so you can unlock the bootloader and easily root it without voiding the warranty).
If you are on T-Mobile today, you could buy the ATT version at no contract direct from Moto, BUT... you can't unlock the bootloader (moto doesn't give out the codes for ATT, Verizon, Republic wireless and a few others), ATT Wont sim unlock it (so you could use with T-Mobile) unless you are their customer for a certain period of time, and it doesn't support HSPA/HSPA+ on AWS. While the ATT X does support 2 extra LTE bands, those bands are not currently used in the USA.

Yes, that is correct. The only caveat being that if ATT ever starts using those two extra LTE Bands (band 5 and 7) in the USA then the GSM Unlocked will have a slight disadvantage as it doesn't support them (hardware wise).

I bought the T-Mobile/GSM unlocked version from MotoMaker and it's working on my AT&T GoPhone plan no problem. I cut my micro-SIM down to nano and it works in the X just like it did in my Nexus 4. Interestingly I get better signal in many areas on LTE than my N4 got on HSPA+.

I have this device on the AT&T GoPhone plan and very pleased with LTE here in the mountains of NC..out performs my Moto X Dev Edition and Droid Maxx Dev Edition (Verizon) here..
