[Q] Moto X persistent OTA download popups. - Moto X Q&A

Hello,
Im getting pesistant notifications to update my Moto X to 140.44.3 which has the KK update.
1. How do I stop these? They keep showing up every 5 mins!
2. If I download will I be prompted to install (like the Nexus for eg.) Or will it auto install the update after downloading? I was thinking the notifications to install would be less pestering.

Is your phone stock? Rooted? Unlocked?

It's stock, unrooted.
Should have pointed that out at the start, my bad

I get them too. If you're rooted you could freeze the apps causing the update nag with Titanium Backup. If not rooted, just stopping those apps doesn't seem to help. It's just become part of my morning routine to reschedule the nag by 23 hrs 58 min into the future.

But does downloading the update necessarily mean installing it? I mean if you choose download the update, will the phone automatically install the update without prompting the user again?

If you download it you will continue to get notifications to install. Your best bet is to either take it or root and freeze the updater.apk

Root - Titanium Pro - MotorolaOTA

I do not know how to prevent the notifications if you don't have root. Once you have root, if you get Titanium Backup Pro, you can freeze apps. I froze the app called MotorolaOTA and the notifications went away. Freezing the updater app did not get rid of the notifications for me.

So... why don't you want to accept the OTA?

Came across this thread searching so figured I'd post this here for future searchers. Long press the System Update notification and click "app info". Force stop MotorolaOTA, and you can disable the notifications there, as well. Doesn't seem to be a way to disable the app entirely, at least without root, and it starts back up on its own eventually. Hopefully the notifications will stay gone, though. Looks like it still updates in the background after it starts back up, but hopefully the nags to install will go away.
*Nope, doesn't stop the install nags. Must be some other service involved.

I accidentally installed the update and bootlooped my phone... I can fix it but it's still annoying.
Always backup your stuff...
Using Nexus 5 as my backup phone for now till I fix my moto X.

Hey if you click download you WILL still be reminded to finish the update. I chatted with a rep and this update is persistent and mandatory! & on purpose from chatting with the moto rep. Picture is below.
Other option apparently is buy a new phone lol. Since you're reading this on XDA it isn't a huge deal considering we all know how to work around such things.

I'm still really confused as to why you wouldn't just update to 4.4 when your phone is completely stock...

Well, if you want to freeze the updates, you need to either have root, or get a signed motorola img without the update, and flash that. Either way, your modifying something, so your not going to get out of doing that. There is no setting that I am aware of to turn off the notifications. Just update. The battery life isn't as bad as they are saying, and I haven't noticed any broken features. 4.4.2 is already out for t-mobile and is coming out for the other carriers soon so just update. If you can't stand it, enjoy knowing that your going to have a better version very soon

There are reports of volume issues after the update. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And none of the updates listed apply to my phone. Battery life has been fine, I don't use MS Exchange, and I've not found the need to print from my phone yet. The only issue I do have, besides the wallpaper zooming after every reboot, is bluetooth volume control doesn't work on Win8.1, though it works fine on my desktop with Win7. Volume control works on both machines with a Galaxy S4, so I've at least narrowed down to the phone.
Anyhoo, I just did a factory reset trying to fix the BT issue (with no luck), and so far haven't gotten another notification about updating. Have only had the phone 2 weeks so may not be an option for other people, just throwing it out there.

ROOT ONLY. Install Disable Service from the play store. It's free. Find MotorolaOTA and disable all the services under it. Reboot your phone. Done.

I don't recall which of the OTA screen it was, but you should notice that there's a time on it. If you click the time (it's not highlighted or boxed, so not obvious) you can enter a new time, which is when it will remind you. Mine somehow defaulted to the current time and I got stuck in the OTA screen until I noticed you could click the time and change when it next alerts you.

[Q] Can't receive MMS

About a week or so ago maybe, it started that I can't receive MMS messages. I can't figure it out for the life of me. I can send them fine, but if someone sends me a picture in an MMS, I don't receive it. No errors, no picture, no notification of it, nothing. But if they send it to my mms address ([email protected]), then I'll get it.
I normally use the default messaging app that comes with android, but I tried a third party app (the go one) and same problem. This is all on a Samsung Captivate currently running Slim Bean 3.1.0 (Android 4.1.2). I want to say the problem started when I went from Slim Bean 2.4 to 4.1 rc1, but I'm not really sure if it started then or not. Since then, I've deleted the caches and formatted and all and put the latest Official Slim Bean release on here and the problem persists. Straight Talk (my provider) is pretty much useless for support. I have quadruple checked my APN settings and they are all correct.
Any ideas?
Good Morning! I had this same problem of not being able to receive MMS. I had frozen the default messaging app because I use Go Messaging. I finally figured out that Go Messaging (and maybe other replacements) relies on the default messaging app to download MMS. I have been receiving MMS, now that I leave the default messaging app unfrozen.
Good luck!
That's not really the problem here. I dunno what is though.
sounds like some of your APN settings for mms could be messed up. are you on AT&T or another carrier?
if at&t, here are a couple of screen shots of my working settings

Okay, here's a little bit more of some extra info. I'm just noticing this, but when I send something, it's shrinking the pictures. I sent a screenshot to my email last night and it's shrunk...

That's because there's a maximum size that can be sent (often app dependant) using our androids. Most likely can be changed in the app's settings or by using another app.
I had this problem while upgrading my daughters fascinate. I goofed up the flash along the way and lived without MMS. I called Verizon. Did a manual upgrade successfully and still no mms. I went back to GB stock via Odin for another reason and checked MMS for the hell of it. It worked. I had to flash the Pit file, the tar all in one package together and viola! MMS. Good luck

It didn't used to do it. This is new. It wouldn't let me send large files, but it didn't reduce quality and/or shrink them either.
I'm wondering if I should attempt getting the thing back to stock, but I really am not sure how to do it. I found a thread here, but I'm still confused really, lol. And 2.3 seems like a pretty big downgrade from 4.1
There has got to be a setting or file or something somewhere that's causing this. Or maybe something missing, I dunno. I wish now I would've just left the damn thing using slimbean 2.4 and not upgraded it. It was all fine till then, except for Google's retarded f'ing Play store telling me apps wouldn't work when I knew better...

Going back to stock is fairly easy, just grab Odin KK4 without bootloaders (stickied in the Dev section).
But Imo, go ahead and give another ROM a shot if that one doesn't satisfy you.

It's just going to take some time and patience. Learn how to Odin. Get all of the necessary files and watch some tutorials. But above all else don't panic. You won't be able to focus on what you are doing and that's what needs to happen for you to get your phone in order. Getting back to stock is really easy. You'll be fine. Go on YouTube for video instructions.

Safe Mode

For those of you who don't know, Safe Mode is similar to what you find on a Windows computer. If your phone seems to have some sort of Malware, Virus or even an annoying bootloop then you can put the phone in Safe Mode to remove the app that you suspect is causing havoc. Its a great tool for anyone with major software issues.
HOW TO GET INTO SAFE MODE: Press and hold the POWER button then you will see 3 options (technically 5 but who's counting). Press and hold POWER OFF until the Safe Mode option pops up and your phone will reboot in Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode you will see a water mark that indicates that you've successfully done it correctly.

Hey, this is very interesting. As Nexus users, I trust most of us shouldn't need to use it due to recent nandroid backups we should all be keeping, familiarity with adb we should all have, acute awareness of sketchy looking apps we should all possess, and the end-all fix of factory image installation readily available.
But still, this is interesting. I booted up in to it to experiment. I tried launching Pandora and it worked at first. It got to the splash screen and even a screen after that; one telling me about a new feature of Pandora, but then it force closed after about 3 seconds. I was kind of surprised it even got that far. I wonder how far, programmatically, it got. That feature screen I saw might have been downloaded prior to me booting up into Safe Mode, was cached, and meant to be seen the next time I launched the app. Either way, it was interesting. I also noticed all non-system apps were removed from the app drawer. The only way I could launch Pandora is because it left the icon on the tray at the bottom of my home screen. I find that interesting because it was programmed to remove the icons from the app drawer, but not from the home screen? Also: its claim of all third-party apps being disabled is technically incorrect. It just disables all non-system apps. I have SuperSU, Cerberus, and AOSP browser installed as system apps and they are intact in Safe Mode. Under normal circumstances, I suppose the claim could hold some substance. Although, with carriers and their bloatware apps, the term "third-party" kinda gets skewed...
Anyway, whoa. Back to the original post. Nice find, OP. It's pretty cool that Android has such a state.

Yeah, the SAFE MODE feature should only work for SYSTEM APPS and not 3rd party ones. Its a great feature for anyone having bootloops with apps such as SETCPU (if you mess with the minimum CPU speed and you run into constant bootloop).
I'm glad I could contribute my find with others in this community.

I'm honestly not sure how to do SAFE MODE unless the phone is booted up. If you can get into recovery then your best bet would be to WIPE the data & CACHE.
I'm not sure what even caused your boot loop since you posted limited information. If that doesn't work then tell me more and maybe I can help solve your issue.

Hello, I'd like to solve a problem with the annoying google search widget on recents @Lollipop and a user says in order to solve it I need to jump into safe mode and hit the recent button once, after that the widget should be gone.
I followed the instructions to get into safe mode, but I went into bootloop ?
I had to restore my backup afterwords
Why this could happen? Thanks for reply!
Thanks! Somehow I managed to trigger this on my standby HTC 610 and had no idea what it was. Had the same watermark in the bottom corner so it's built in to android

[Q] AT&T Visual Voicemail. Anyone get it working?

I'm unable to find AT&T VVM in the Google Play Store which I assumed to mean it wasn't compatible. I manually found a link to it and sure enough it says it's not compatible with my device and wouldn't let me install it.
I made sure my older S3 was up to date and pulled the APK off that and put it on my N6. It installs just fine and seems to start the setup process OK too. It asks me to call my VM to activate it, it auto calls my VM for me and then when I close out of the call I see the VVM app says its activating but after a bit it says it was unable to activate and to check my connection etc and asks if I want to call my VM to try again.
Someone made a post about no Verizon VVM either and I made the comment same on AT&T. Someone had replied in that thread with the following:

However, this did not work for me. Same issue as the one I pulled from my S3.
Question is, did anyone get AT&T VVM working and if yes what APK and how?
Thanks!
Did you try turning off wifi before the setup? I've seen some say they have had to in the past, that only cellular activation would actually work. In any event, it works great for me...

Used same apk as you, on LTE, worked fine for me on my unlocked Nexus 6.
Still not working.
I just spent the last 30 minutes on the phone with AT&T trying to figure out if there is a server side issue but they had to escalate the case.
Funny side note, the AT&T tech support guy tried to remote into my phone using their AT&T remote access app but I was unable to open the page to install it because the phone is not carrier locked. Apparently per the tech, the app only loads on carrier locked phones. He put me on hold while he went to talk to his supervisor and who said yeah won't work on N6's, they are not carrier locked.
During the process I let it slip out that the phone was unlocked, rooted and decrypted. Shouldn't be an issue warrant wise or insurance wise if ever needed should it? They don't keep track of that stuff I assume?
using app version 2.7.2.1
transferred app and setttings using helium from my nexus 5
works with no issues
Works fine for me. Worked fine on my T-Mobile sourced Nexus 5 and Play Store Nexus 4 as well. I don't think it is available on the Play Store though.
I was able to download the APK and just installed it directly. Opened it up just fine and set it up as normal (i turned wifi off as I always do for setup)
Specifically I installed version 2.10.1.27, got it at the link below
Visual Voice Mail Topic
Still not working and I'm running down the list of APK's at that link. I just keep getting what you see in the picture below.

OK I just tried ALL of the AT&T VVM apk's on that thread and they all gave the same error.
I am getting a different error. When I search up the application in the play store it says its not compatible with my device (AT&T Nexus 6 (Motorola). Anyone else seen that? Happened to a game or two as well.
I just installed the one in your link and it worked fine. Bone stock N6. Anyone have an apk for latest version that includes the sensor setting to turn off screen when phone is brought up to your ear?
Yeah I don't think it's been int he Playstore for Nexus users for a LONG time for some reason. That is why people pull the APK and put it in that XDA thread mentioned in this thread, because people need it and can't get it from the Playstore.
Still haven't gotten this working yet.
Worked fine here
Still not working today either! =(

I've used Google Voice for VVM ever since Galaxy Nexus because of install issues with AT&T's VVM app. If you use Hangouts for SMS it is even more convenient because voicemails are merged with SMS and Hangouts conversations in the app keeping everything in one conversation thread.
I just had to make sure my wifi was off when first starting app but its worked fine on the last 2 custom AOSP roms I have loaded.

Marshmallow Gmail Notifications

I thought i had fixed this problem after setting Gmail as my default email but alas no.
The only way to recieve emails is when i pick the phone up and unlock the screen.
When the phones screen is off no emails are recieved.Whatapp and Text work ok.
Gmail is set to sync its the default in advanced settings. Its not even listed in protected apps so i cant turn that on.Im not sure if its the phone or marshmallow just wondered if anyone else was experiencing this.

Have a look here different phone but same problem and try some of the fixes, one may work for you.

Personally i dont trust the phone anymore to deliver messages so im looking to a Xiaomi Mi5.
Ive downloaded the Inbox app that has restored notifications.... or i thought it did FFS.
Apparently the Nexus 6P suffers this bug too.

Interesting if Nexus 6p has it as that huawei built, assume they doing something off with standby app handling in kernel & it should of been resolved many devices ago.
Unsolved ssues like this is killing huawei's sales & brand image.
If devices had been more popular in rom development all these flaws would of been fixed by the unofficial rom & kernel masters lol

Apps closing after upate
Hello
Please let me know if you have any similar issues like this case below:
After opening and playing a game for few minutes, the game close. This happened with many games. It only occurred after installing that latest update and this was the only problem I have not only with games but all apps in general

Someone with similar issue told me he fixed it by applying factory rest. I haven't tried it becasue i need to backup my device first and I dont have time for that

hmm, I am a fan of MobileLegends MOBA. Play everyday and I dont encounter such issue after the update B162. The only issue is GPU tends to underclock so much that game frame rates during battle are quite unbearably slow.
Maybe try to wipe cache and see first.

I will give this a shot
However, until now and even though I have this exact update B163, I am still having the force close problem
I have the same issue, can't download anything from the app store, there's often a couple of hours of delay. I would click the download button and it would show downloading, but nothing would happen. I'll leave the phone over night, and when I wake up it would have installed the app.
This also happens with imgur. I try to download an image, but nothing happens, then afer a few hours I would get a notification that the image is downloaded.
It seems they are aggressively closing background task responsible for downloading, to increase battery time.
But it's not working, I'm stills getting around 2-3 hours of screen on time
Cache was cleared more than 1 GB

The problem is still there. I guess I need to wait for the new update to come. I hope it will not take long but for now I will contact Huawei support
Disable Chrome
Hi, the constant force close is caused by chrome update, roll it back to v56 or disable it and it all works fine. I did the reset but as soon as i updated chrome to v61 force closes started. My phone is good now. I actually bought this phone yesterday and updated as the notification came.
