So how is the new mic in newer HTC One's? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am considering this phone and I would lie if I said that this HDR mic I've seen in action in some clips, is not one of the biggest thing I admire in this thing. There was much rumours and constant mentioning about changing mic's in newer HTC One's and somehow as of today it's impossible to find any comparison or even mention about how this new MIC works compared to Nokia HDR. Anyone care to shed some light on this? It would be much appreciated.

My Nexus One not cutting it

every few years i like to buy a high end phone just because i do a lot with my phone. Ive owned phones like the sony w900, nokia n95, iphone 3g, and my nexus one. Besides the iphone 3g which i ditched and went back to my n95 in two weeks. after nearly half a year now and with the release of froyo that doesnt fix my complaints with the phone, i find that the nexus one has been my most disappointing. It seems either google or htc cut many corners with the phone (speaker, sound recording, phone overheating, weird problems with the touchscreen).
im not a fanboy or anything, i just prefer to buy the best possible phone when i buy one, and was considering an iphone 4 until steve jobs basically gave the middle finger to all those with the antenna problem. so now im looking into getting a galaxy s when it comes out.
anyone know if the poor sound in video recordings is exclusive to the n1, or all android phones? thanks
Well the Nexus uses an inferior codec for encoding its sound in video (AMR.)
Currently people are working to enable the AAC codec for video to allow for better recording. Since Android is open source, manufacturers can install their own codecs for use with their cameras, so its possible/likely that the Galaxy S will have better video capability (they also have included the DivX codec for watching movies I believe)
The Nexus really has a terrible speaker though

haha yes i know G1 was just as bad (a lil better imo,) but the nexus one is supposed to be a superphone! it sucks coming from nokias which cost $250-300 less than the nexus
The Moto Droid came with an outstanding speaker AND a 16gb microSD card. Those are the only two complaints I have with the N1. We should bombard HTC with emails demanding that they use speakers on par with Moto's going forward.
I'm glad I never use my speaker, lol.

If sound quality is your only complaint about the Nexus One, perhaps you should switch to a SE X10.
Speaker sucks big time, Motorla Mielsotne/Droid is way more powerful speaker, even on the low end it sounds good (but doesn't create bass)...

HTC HD7 Camera and sound issues

Hi guys,
For those unfortunate owners of HTC HD7? Any updates on the camera and sound issues.
The camera does not focus properly on distant objects not very far though.
The sound on the speakers is weak during calls. Need a booster app.
Thanks,
Get the Sound Enhancer app in the HTC Hub. I haven't used it yet but it gets good reviews.

I'd highly recommend re-thinking your thread starting structure. You're not going to get many answers if you begin like this.
I personally believe (and you'll probably find 99% of other users who frequent the HD7 section of these forums feel the same) that there isn't a better device on the market today. So to call us "unfortunate owners" is kind of insulting.
But i'll tell you what i've told others on similar threads, i personally haven't noticed any problems with the camera and i haven't really noticed the volume not being loud enough. Perhaps it's due to personal use, or maybe you've got a dodgy device, i dunno.

Yes, I do own an HD7, and no, it's not really for just EQ settings. In fact, unless I'm mistaken, you only get EQ options when you use headphones.
It allows you to Choose Dolby or SRS for both Audio and Video. Equalizer specifically says for headphones or external speakers only. If you want to lump Dolby and SRS into that definition, fine.
All I can say, is that it makes quite a difference when playing youtube or netflix. Quite noticable.
( I use SRS )
you guys know if the htc 7 surround has a better camera? i heard the camera on this was horrid. may be getting the hd7 soon

To be honest it isn't like he isn't somewhat justified. I mean how can you mess up the speaker and camera on a phone that is nearly identical to its predacesor. My old school touch pro 2 speaker must be at least 3 times louder than this and the camera is just a joke. I put it side by side with an hd2 and it was like night and day.

its mostly to do with the software. yeah i had the htc pure and the speaker was awesome in it. the camera is awesome on my mytouch 4g, the software is also awesome on sense. WP7 has sh*t camera software. thats all our cameras our pretty much, crappy cameras, and software to make them look good. Nokia is the only company that has made cell phone camera that are actually good without the software. and the touch pro two had two speakers in the back, or thats what i remember lol. it was one of the big features of it, just like the HTC surround. the HD7 has the big screen, thats the feature. HTC wont put all their quality into one phone cause then nobody would but the rest. you want good speaker - surround, you want big screen - HD7, you want awesome keyboard - HTC 7 pro, etc. they wont make a phone with a nice keyboard, perfect screen size, amoled screen, good speaker all into one. the closest they got is the incredible.

[Q] how is the loudspeaker?

we've known the old desire(dhd inc)'s speaker is almost a crap.hope htc do well this time.
it is the only point that may break my deal!
Interested to know this too. Although some have said it seems ok I would like to hear from anyone who can directly compare it to the DHD or the original Desire.

yes. but i don't think "ok" is enough,as that can mean they don't care about the loudspeaker/sound quality. hope they compare to samsung or nokia devices.
Had a play today - speaker is pathetic. Just like the Desire so HTC have learned nothing here!
It seems you can compare the speaker on the IncredibleS with the Desire, Z & HD. That's really a shame.
Currently I'm still on the Touch Pro2 mainly because the speaker quality is actually pretty good. Was thinking on buying the DesireZ a while ago but decided to skip it due to the bad speaker. Now the IncredibleS suffers the same problem.
Wonder if my next device will be an HTC. But look at the alternative. Devices from Samsung and LG suffer from LED notifications. What's wrong with these manufacturers?
The saga continues...
Not at all .....i have both phones and the incredible s is noticeably different to desire hd....i mean its no beats by dre.....but there is a noticeabe improvement.....when holding both phones hand in hand and playing same song.....you can barely hear the really tinny sound of dhd over the sound of incredible s.......dont get nme wrong there is till a lot of room for improvement by htc
I dont have a DHD but had the original desire and the incredible s is definitely better sounding from the speaker phone. Its not great & I wouldn't listen to music without decent headphones but it is improved none the less. I only use it for sat nav & its perfectly fine for that.
Well this is encouraging. My time with the Incredible S was very brief and the sounds demo'd to me were those that come on the card. When I asked for a demo of the speakerphone the assistant was unable to make a call so I wasn't able to test this.
Interesting, if it really is better than the DHD it may just be worth a shot for me ... Sat nav instructions were barely understandable from the Desire when I had it due to the poor quality - one of the reasons I ditched the original Desire and also the DHD.

It is a tad bit louder that DHD but i think the noticeable improvement is depth of music...for instance the DHD will just sort of play snares and lound sharp sounds where as the incredible s has a wider range of sounds that you can hear

That's kind of what I was hoping for but is not something I was able to hear from the time I spend with the IS. Guess it needs more thorough testing to appreciate the differences.

Sat-Nav is one of the main features of the phone for me, I used it on the Hero all the time but the screen was tiny. I use Co-Pilot, and the instructions are nice and clear for me, and the bigger screen makes a huge difference.

Hmm as for sat nav i doubt either phone will really be on par for such a task on the audio front but as stated Incredible S has shown some improvement in music quality....but to be able to play turn by turn direction over car noise and traffic.....i doubt it will.
Also...
Visually both phones are good......as for use as a sat nav....the DHD has a larger screen for maps etc but the Incredible S has a better anti glare screen and much more vivid colours.....
Played with the HTC Incredible S. Loudspeaker is better than on the DesireHD. But my HTC TouchPro2 is still louder and the has more "body".
Currently also looking at the Optimus 2X by LG. This has a better sound chip. But haven't tested this in real life just yet.

It looks like recent HTC products have speaker problem (at least it happens on my nexus one and MT4), but my TP2 doesn't.
The speaker on the I-S is without doubt 1000 times better than the garbage HTC put on the DHD.
The DHD speakerwas rubbish for music and I could never hear youtube videos without cupping my hand over the back of the phone but still to no avail.
Having got an I-S the first thing I did was compare the two side by side, and I cant even hear the DHD playing due to the loudness, clarity and depth of the I-S when both on SRS ...such an improvement, well done HTC.
For such a good phone, HTC really did betray the customer with what they put in the DHD...yes, its great with earphones, but who always wants to put earphones in..do they think nobody ever wants to show other ppl things they are watching.
Anyway, that isnt the only area of supremacy IMHO..the screen is much better, I dont know if its cos its smaller, but its clearer, not washed out, and has colour depth comparative to SAMOLED...you dont realise how bad the DHD screen is until they are side by side..you feel as if you have been robbed from day 1.
The viewing angles are amazing on the I-S cos of these issues too, clearly viewable at all acute angles.
The moulded handset is very comfortable, lighter which is betteras regardless of what ppl say, why would anyone want a heavier handset????
The lip around the screen is much better than the DHD too, almost non existent, certainly not noticeable...the on off button is more distinct too.
I dint mean to bash the DHD, Im just annoyed as I bought one when it first came out and it was very expensive and apart from the solid build quality, HTC really did rob the purchaser at every level...so my contentness with the I-S is a consolation
I think the speaker is pretty good as well!
But then again, I'm coming from the Xperia X10 so quite everything is better on this phone! xD
Such an awesome toy
hell ye, the speaker is banging
Having used the HTC Desire HD and Desire Z, and now having switched to Incredible S I can say both the earpiece and the speaker phone are way better on the Incredible S.
I also used the TP2....the earpiece on the I-S is as good as the TP2. The speaker phone is not as good...as I have not seen any phone with a speaker phone as good as the TP2 till date (that was awesome).
Having said that, the speaker phone is quite decent on a stand alone basis and any day better than the D-HD which was SH*T!!!

[Q] Basic Problems with HTC One M7

I'm a HTC One user..and i had to search so many pages just to find out all the basic problems with HTC One device..so now i'm making a specific thread for this..
This list will help those people who are planning to buy HTC One, have planned to buy HTC One or have already bought HTC One.
I'm gonna list down the problems with this device in 2 categories..first the very common problem with the device and second the rare problems that only few people are facing..
This post will be regularly updated depending on the people comments..so if you have any problem with your device people do comment on this thread..i will read each and every comment and update the data..
Common Problems
1. Gap Problem : The gap between the speaker grill and the body..both at top and bottom. Since HTC is promoting this phone as 'ZERO GAP' phone..this manufacturing fault is unacceptable.. http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/628/img2897q.jpg
2. Camera Problem : I have personally faced this problem.
Picture : http://i.imgur.com/vQ0b0np.jpg
Video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4p7a9tdNVYo&feature=youtu.be
Thread for this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317507
This problem is noticeable when you take pictures in low light. By default if you take a picture in a dark room..the picture should be black..since no light source is available..but in defective HTC One it's red/purple.
Again this is totally unacceptable since HTC has marketed this phone as the best phone for low light pictures..
3. Loudspeaker : This problem was there in my first device..when at maximum volume..there is a hissing sound from the speakers.. This sound/vibration is also visible when calling someone..or when you play music at max volume.
Again HTC has marketed this device as the phone with the best sound speakers..so i have no idea whether HTC has a Q&C dept or not..because the quality is really poor..
4 Dead Pixels : Many people have reported dead pixels..
5. Proximity Sensor: The proximity sensor is not working in few devices.
Other Problems
1. The home and back button weren't working properly..but after the update i think it's working fine.
2. Few people have noticed purple tint in the center of the pictures taken by the camera...
3. Mic problem
4. Death Grip
5. Cracked Camera Glass
There is no possible solution for the above issues..the only possible thing to do is to get it repaired or replaced..
I have already got one device replaced and will be getting another device replaced this week till i don't find a perfect device!
So please do let us know if you have faced any problem with your HTC one..so i can make a check-list for the new HTC One users..so that they can buy a defect free HTC ONE!
I had to return 1 phone because the back mic didn't work so I had no speakerphone. I have read that HTC has since changed the type of mic being used during manufacture.

The easiest way to test is to take a video in HD mode as it uses both mics to record video sound in stereo. During the recording run your fingers over the 2 mics one after another.
When playing it back you should hear the noises from your finger touching the mics.

Just for those who have no idea where the mics are..there are two small holes..
1. Right side of the USB Charging port

Well. Honestly, I don't see the gap issue since mine is black so I can't really tell. The only problem I've had is 7 dead pixels and with a 1080p screen, the only time I was seriously able to figure that out was in recovery mode at night when all the lights were out. So, I don't really see any major problems.
I have a flawless phone besides a bulging volume rocker and the biggest issue - TERRIBLE signal... No dead pixels that I've noticed, speakers sound fine, maybe a little buzzing but nothing out of the ordinary...
Coming from an S4... Which was flawless... I'm not happy about the signal issue and the usual fanfare of going through ridiculous steps to unlock the bootloader, get S-OFF, etc., but it seems like a decent device. Definitely a much better screen overall than the S4, not very laggy (I haven't gone to 4.2.2 just yet because I literally just started using it today but the S4 blew me away how quickly you could use it from power off to power on but the lag goes away after Sense loads) but I'm having radio issues all the way around (except the "death grip") - my GPS doesn't want to lock, mobile handshakes not only take forever but I can't get LTE with my case on, etc. And the speakers really aren't THAT impressive. The S4 is similarly loud although I heard HTC turned the volume down on a firmware upgrade because people were complaining they were too loud so who knows.
I just might have to start the damn warranty exchanges for the signal. *sigh* I see HTC's quality control has not improved over the years...

Just saw your video..and according to me this much drop is acceptable..the plastic part on this phone is meant for signals transmission..so if you block those areas..it will automatically effect the transmission..
Let's us wait for more response..

[Q] nokia microphones and microsoft acquisition

Now that micro$oft is acquiring nokia does this mean the haac microphone technology that stmicroelectronics sold to htc early this year will never make it into future non-nokia devices? I know that agreement between nokia and stmicro was until the middle of 2014 but with ms taking over the nokia smartphone division in this same year I doubt they would want to license out anything to potential competitors. I guess the htc ones with these mics are about to become even more valuable. My real question is do existing htc ones still have the dual membrane microphones? Htc did remove this feature from the official specs page but hdr video recording is still listed on the back of every htc one box from what I have seen so I am assuming they still have stock. And if they still have stock will there be enough for when the one max comes out later this year? I'm a noob not only to this forum but to a lot of cell phone tech and tech terminology so if anyone had any opinions or answers I would appreciate the input. Thanks.

The mics were supposed to be removed from all future HTC One's as the tech was sold to HTC without proper licencing (they didnt go through Nokia) so i doubt the Max was ever supposed to use it. As for HDR recording I dont see what that has to do with the mic technology. HDR is typically a term used for lighting.

I recently read a thread here in the htc one forum that the way to know if you have the nokia microphone in your one was if it said hdr video on the back of the box. I guess that person who said that was mistaken.
HDR means high dynamic range... It commonly refers to an audio or video sensor's sensitivity to high and low inputs, whether sound or luminance.
I have a launch day One, and get impressive high spl audio recordings on video clips. I had an old thread around somewhere trying to figure out if the mics required special drivers, since audio only recording apps didn't sound as good as video from the HTC camera app...

Thanks for that clarification. I am really only familiar with HDR from gaming which refers to lighting processing.

It's actually the same thing. Audio and video are branches of signal processing, with techniques used in both cases. 1D vs. 2D signal processing.
None of the HTC One boxes I have seen mention anything about the microphone on them.
Closed, next time please read the rules before posting.
