[Q] Galaxy S3 LTE i9305 Battery drain (Even in Airplane mode) - Galaxy S III I9305 (4G LTE + 2GB RAM) Q&A, Help &

Hello,
I've searched the forums about battery drain problems regarding android phones in airplane mode but each subjects seemed different to mine.
I own a Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE i9305 under Android 4.3.
The phone is rooted, Greenify installed, hoping saving battery life but...
I've tried to do a full data reset + reinstallation of Android 4.3 official, with no success.
I've done the folowing experience 3 times with the following similar behaviour as last time :
- Phone fully charged before to go to bed, Airplane mode activated.
7 hours later :
- Battery is at 80%
- 0 minute in deep sleep, all the time in awake state.
Several behaviours noted by Wakelock detector and Gsam Battery Monitor :
- Device Idle and androidOS consumed 80% of the 20% used
- Misc processes seem to have used a lot of battery among them :
- AlarmManager
- PowerManagerService.WakeLocks
- KeyEvents
I'm including screenshots to illustrate all this.
If anyone has been thru this problem I'd be glad to know how to solve it.
Thank you !
Emmanuel

Hi,
I do not have the exact same problem, but my phone drains battery more than often. With wifi, mobile data etc turned off, i have ~10% of drain overnight (7~8 hours). But my phone does enter in deep sleep and battery stats shows me nothing weird (most of battery is being taken from phone iddle /standby cell), it is driving me nuts! My wife have the same phone as mine, same firmware, same system apps, the only diference is mine have the new bootloader, but her phone drains almost half than mine. I'm now reinstalling the firmware with the exact same steps i did in her phone and if someone want i post some screenshots later.
Did you tried installing some custom roms out here who have not all the system apps the original package have?

I am using 4.3 Alliance Rom with boeffla kernel. I had the same problem with battery drain during airplane mode. While I was at work with airplane mode on, I lost nearly 20% in one hour. Because of it I switched to 4.4.2 aosp rom "aosb 1.3.0. Probam" (meanwhile there is 1.3.2 published) but there I had music stuttering and camera issues, but perfect battery life. Because of the problems I decided to go back to 4.3 and gave Alliance Rom another chance. And now the battery life is wonderful like on 4.4.2.
Maybe try the same way, first to update on an aosp rom with excellent battery life and then go back to android 4.3. Maybe this will solve your problem, too.

Hi,
By any chance, do you have XPOSED framework enabled and do you use for example Wanam Xposed module ? If an option like "Turn on screen when unplugged" is unchecked (ie if you don't want your phone to wake up after you unplug it from USB), you may encounter battery drain. It seems that sometimes the phone doesn't enter in deep sleep if the USB cable is unplugged from a PC in this case. I have this kind of battery drain and since I've checked "Turn on screen when unplugged" option, no more battery drain after a reboot.
I'm not sure but you must give it a try as it worked for me. No problem so far.... I hope it will help.

Hi and thank you all,
I'm taking good note of your advices.
I did install Xposed and Wanam. I didn't pay attention to this option and since then completly reinstalled 4.3 official ROM. Battery drain vanished.
I now have the phone going to deep sleep normaly.
I've been reinstalling all my apps slowly one after the other, and didn't try yet to reinstall Wanam Xposed, as I know it modifies the system relatively deeply.
But the envy is here and I think I'll install it again. Ok, let's go, I'll do it tonight. I'll pay attention to "Turn on screen when unplugged" option and will ensure it is checked !
It's worth trying, though all these battery draining problems seem mysterious...
I'll post a reply in a few days with the results...
By the way, I installed Agni kernel wich uses Boeffla engine too. After activating "Extreme battery save" mode, the battery life has doubled or so. I'm happy about this.
Thank you again, and let's see how xposed wanam behaves...

GREAT.

Note not sleeping

Been using the note without any issues for a few days
XXKKA Rooted
AbyssKernel (1.2) -since yesterday night-
Stock ROM
just when I started to brag that had no problems to whine I noticed that my note isn't going to deep sleep anymore ! (it was sleeping this morning, the problem should have started a few hours ago)
What I tried
- restoring the Stock Kernel
- Freezing all apps I could think off (newly installed or not) basically i freezed almost all apps with auto start mode
- enabled flight mode
still nothing the phone won't sleep!
Can anyone help me identify the cause of this ?
Have you checked monitored wakelocks?
I went to Better Battery Stat -> Kernel Wakelocks
showing
vbus_present 84.7%
deleted_wake_lock 5.4%
*EDIT*
I read that the vbus_present is normal when charging so i unplugged and testing again. any help wld be great
*Edit 2*
Go figure ! CPU Spy is now showing deep sleep again ! Could it be that on lower battery voltage something is causing the wakelock

Xperia t JB Battery Life

Hi. I've updated my xperia t to Sony's official JB 4.1.2 9.1.A.0.489 firm.
I'm noticing that the battery life is no as good as expected. If I charge it up to 100%, and leave it locked all night, in the morning it has 80% , sometimes 75%. Some days, i can let it locked for 6 hours, and it's still in 100% ( strange at all). Of you look at the screenshots, it looks like it's always awake!
I've also tried with Battery Guru app, but I feel like it wastes more than it saves.
A friend has a Samsung galaxy ace ( i know, i cannot compare) and the battery literally doesn't go down if he doesn't use it.
Thank's guys.
P.S: Any idea about 9.1.A.1.138 firm? Changelog? availability?
Odp: Xperia t JB Battery Life
Battery problem is already known for this .489 FW. It's just a very first public release of JB, don't expect it will be completely bug-free. We just have to wait for the next releases with fixed this and that so the battery life would be correct again.
I have the same problems like you but I got used to them. For the first few days I was really pissed off and thought about flashing back ICS .195 (which had incredible battery life) but number of the advantages of having JB on my phone was the main factor of not going back to ICS.
That happened to me also lost more than 15% during sleep.
I disabled google search, facebook, android wakeup, etc and turned off auto sync and i lost 1.3% per hour.
In ics, i'm losing less than 1% per hour. So this is pretty decent to me. I'm still getting 3 hours of screen time.

I have everything possible running on my phone but don't know why the battery isn't lasting.
How?

You say that yoy've disabled android wakeup.. how do i do it??? , also in better battery stats, I see Alarm Manager and another alarmManager ( this second apparently from Sony) , with 811 and 2686 YES, 2686 wakeups each. Any idea? what are they about?

The Sony Alarm is Fast Dormancy
The other one is most likely the combined total of a number of apps - to see them you need to be rooted, then you can access "Alarms" from the dropdown menu.
How do I use:
adb shell dumpsys alarm > AlarmDump.txt
What app..cant find anywhere how to do this?
I have a V but generally same things apply.
I think there are simply too many items switched on that would not allow the phone to fall into deep sleep.
Also, a battery usage of 1.3 % / h when idle would hint to that.
I have around 3000 wakelocks, too, but under normal day usage and not during sleep. During sleep there a few only, wakelock time over night is 0 %, and the phone uses close to no battery. Straight segment is the night time usage.
Compare with the pic from above, that phone was used lesser than mine.

Battery Drain issues

I have been facing issues with Battery Drain in Samsung Galaxy S Advance i have tried all possible options
- Rooted and moved to E6.2 ROM the issue was persisting
- Installed the India ROM freash with ODIN without any applications just plain stock rom
Tried several battery calibration applications no hope i have 40% battery drain in just 2 hours without 3G or Synch enabled no applications like Facebook and others also installed
any help will be greatly appreciated.
What did you do with your device in those 2hrs?
Try a wake lock detector. See if any apps are causing wake locks.
My Device : Rooted GT-I9070
ROM - 4.1.2 Stock I9070DDULP8
Kernel - CoCore-E-6.2
Recovery - TWRP 2.5

Make sure that brightness is not full, set it down to lowest and test battery again. If you'll use the Power Saving mode, it'll easily give you 2-3 hours extra, try turning it on and see if it makes a difference.
Some users also suggest draining your entire battery and then charging it continuously for 5-6 hours switched off. That shows better backup results as well.

And the maximum brightness that is not why the battery drained so fast. In just 2 hours battery too low. Try a battery recalibration and uninstall the application that processes in the background.

This looks pretty normal to me because you don't post how long your screen was on..how long your calls were..and I can see wifi is on almost all the time. There's bluetooth on too. And the total percentage of thw battery used in the ss inly accounted for 84%..where's the other 16?

Yea, on the screenshot there is no point where battery was 100%.
Discharge battery untill phone shuts down, then charge it to 100% when it is off.

Unusual battery drain

Hi,
I know there are many topics on the subject but I didn't find any solution to my problem.
So, since a couple weeks, about when I moved from Europe to the US, my phone drains significantly more battery than before. This has apparently nothing to do with screen brightness, wifi or cell data, since it occurs even in airplane mode during the night. I used to lose about 1-2% during a night, but now it's at least 15%.
You can find a couple screenshots from BetterBatteryStats there (sorry for broken link, it does not work otherwise): n.ethz.ch/~bauera/uploads/Screenshots/
So as I noticed, there are a couple wakelocks but nothing that could explain this large drain. Any idea what could be the reason and how to fix it?
FYI I am using the stock rom 23.4.A.1.232 with Android 5.1.1. Phone model is D5803. The OS was rooted directly when I got the phone in October 2015 and as I said, I did not have any battery problems until recently.
Thanks for your help!
Alex
that's the lollipop battery drain bug on mobile radio, marshmallow should have fix this
Thank you for your reply. However are you sure of that? The bug you are mentioning is apparently linked with mobile data, which I haven't even turned on since a couple reboots at least. Moreover, the battery stats for the night (from the built-in battery menu) show that the mobile network was fully off during that time (airplane mode).

BBS - Better Battery Stats is your freind. There's also lots of tips in the thread on how to limit most of the common wakelocks.
There are several services in the new Play Services that are keeping your phone awake. With the introduction of wearable bluetooth there are new fitness services that are looking for your wearable devices constantly, disable them and your battery gets better. Obviously if you use fitness bands/trackers then this fix is not for you.
If you have a rooted phone download Disableservice from the playstore, it's a lot easier to use than Xprivacy and you don't need to install Xposed.
Once it's installed, open the system tab, open Google Play Services, then untick (disable) the following:
ConfigFetchService
FitnessSyncAdapterService
GoogleLocationManagerService
GoogleLocationService
NetworkLocationService
ProximitySettingInjectorService
UserPresenceService
WearableControlService
WearableService
WearableSyncService
then reboot your phone.
Disabling these from running should have no impact on your phone, it doesn't for me, and will give you 10-15% more battery life.

Solved Battery drain for Me
I was also suffering from the same battery drain issue, but after doing a lot of research on this forum, few tricks mentioned here worked for me.
It had been 6 days I bought the phone, so was very disappointed by battery life, did upgrade from PC to Lollipop, but still the problem persisted and even worse. So I decided to go back to Kitkat and followed steps here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-c...d5833-t2906706
After downgrade the battery got somewhat better not satisfactory, so I followed the trick of complete drain upto 0% and charge to 100% (switchded off) after reading posts: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-c...5#post59797105 by Sydr08 #182
and cache clearing trick after 0% to 100% charge http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-c...harge-t3207737
After doing 100% charge I turned ON with vol+ pressed but phone did not respond (I guessed that it didn't worked, so switched ON normally) but after booting I found few settings to be reset so I guess it worked
So finally this trick seems to work for me, now the drain has slowed down to a lot extent. I have used phone regularly (calls, games, whatsapp, Music etc), the battery has dropped to 76% in around 8 hrs ( without stamina mode ) just expecting it to last for two days, and more than that with satmina mode.
Firmware: .77 (India)
Model: D5833
Hi Aakm,
As you said, the tricks mentioned so far on this thread were not really effective, at least for me as well. I could live with that 25-30% left at the end of the day (it is still much better than my old Samsung GS2), but I would be glad to be back to the 2-3 days of moderate use as I had during my first months of ownership.
So I'll try this out over the next days and hopefully it will work, thanks for suggesting! It sounds a bit like magic to me but let's give it a try
Best regards,
Alex
Unfortunately the full drain+charge did not change anything for me. I did not try to downgrade to Kitkat but as I've had good battery on Lollipop for several months, I doubt it would help.
Anyway thanks for your help, but I guess I'll simply wait until Android M comes out and take the opportunity for a full factory reset, hoping it will solve the issue.
Please guys mark the star on the bug report, the more people agree, higher will be the chance that google decide that it's time to fix it

Factory Reset does NOT solve S10 Battery Drain (15-20%) when Idle

I noticed my Samsung S10 T-Mobile Snapdragon would drain about 15-20% overnight while asleep (6-8 hours) since last week or so. The drain during the day is also significantly worse, but it's easier to compare the numbers when on idle. The first weeks that I had the phone, I was losing less than 5% overnight (6-8 hours). I am not sure if this was caused by the security updates, carrier updates, or a rogue application. I made no changes to the phone settings that I can recall. My phone was connected to WIFI overnight, with cellular, cellular data, and Bluetooth on. Prior to going to bed I would charge the phone to about 80% and unplug it.
I installed AccuBattery after reading some forums and it showed that my battery drain overnight was about 2-3% PER hour. AccuBattery also indicated that my phone was in deep sleep +85% of the time. The breakdown per application does not total the 15-20% so there's something else draining the battery. Eventually, I uninstalled AccuBattery to see if it was contributing to the drain, and it made no difference.
Below are most of the things that I have tried and tested overnight while I slept (6-8 hours), all of them have been UNSUCCESSFUL at solving the battery drain. I might have forgotten some other settings that I have changed. Keep in mind that this took me over a week of playing around with these settings, and checking the battery right before and after I went to sleep.
Restarted phone (There's always someone who would suggest this if not written down)
Cleared Google Services, Google, and other Apps Cache and Data
Cleared Cache Memory (Through recovery menu - Tried this about 5 times at this point)
Reset the big 3 (Reset settings, Reset network settings, Reset accessibility settings)
Enabled Airplane Mode (Cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth Off)
Disabled Location
Disabled Sync
Disabled Always on Display
Disabled ALL Motions and Gestures (e.g. Lift to Wake, Double tap to wake, Smart Stay, etc.)
Disabled Video enhancer
Disabled Game Launcher
Disabled Bixby Routines
Disabled Nearby Device Scanning
Disabled WiFi Scanning and Bluetooth Scanning (Improve Accuracy)
Disabled Show icon when screen is off (under fingerprints - from Samsung Forums)
Disabled certain Apps (AR Emoji, ARCore, Briefing, Chrome, Game Launcher, Google, Facebook, Secure Folder, etc.)
Forced Stop certain Apps (Bixby, Secure WiFi, etc. - they seem to all come back after a couple of minutes anyway)
Enabled/Disabled Adaptive Power Saving (Tried both settings, made no difference)
Enabled/Disabled Auto Optimization (Tried both settings, made no difference)
Switched between Power Modes (Optimized to Medium, made no difference)
Change lock screen and home screen to a 100% black wallpaper
Ran Safe Mode overnight with ALL of the settings above (Airplane with Location and Sync Off, etc.) Still got a 15% drain overnight.
Last night after I got fed up with playing with the countless of options, I decided to Factory Reset the phone thinking that this would solve my battery drain problem. Well, WRONG. Still got a 15% battery drain overnight with only the core apps installed, in airplane mode, location and sync disabled, and other settings disabled. I did NOT restore any backups from Samsung or Google, nor installed any additional apps that did not come with the phone.
I have complained to Samsung through their Samsung Members application under Feedback. If you guys are on the same boat, I suggest we all start complaining so that they can start taking a look at this and hopefully release a fix.
If you guys have any tips or anything has worked for you guys, please let me know.

If its still draining that much even in flight mode, then something is definitely wrong. Seems like you've tried everything. Can you not get a replacement under warranty from where you purchased it? Sounds faulty.

I have had this same issue with my S7. Hence my reply. At that time I have traced it down to a certain kernel process. The only way to resolve this was to replace the motherboard. A factory reset didnt helped either.
Later when i investigated it further it was like an Interrupt request for sleep mode. Eleminating the phone going to deep sleep. Than you will see drains like this
My advice. Get the device replaced. It was the only way to resolve the problem on my S7. Hardware replacement

Later when i investigated it further it was like an Interrupt request for sleep mode. Eleminating the phone going to deep sleep. Than you will see drains like this
My advice. Get the device replaced. It was the only way to resolve the problem on my S7. Hardware replacement

I installed BetterBatteryStats and got a ~20 drain over 9 hours of standby while sleeping. The phone was untouched for 9 hours, airplane mode on, location off, sync off, and other settings off.

Also, how did you manage to get your phone replaced? By Samsung? I am past the 30 day return policy so I am not sure how easy/hard it will be for the to replace my device/motherboard. What did you say to them exactly?
Reflash firmware?
Which update are you on?
After the ASCA, but before the finger print sensor update, I had amazing battery life, less than 1% per hour on idle.
But after finger print sensor update, it's about 2% per hour on idle.
Maybe reflash ASCA without the fps update? If it's possible

Spoke to someone in Reddit and he flashed his phone to the Febraury update. It still had bad idle drain.
Additional things I have tried recently overnight with no success
Disabled fingerprint
Removed SIM Card
Cleared memory cache again
I'll wait for the April update and see if that solves things. If not, I guess I'll drop by one of their service centers/genuis bars.
What a terrible experience...
Yeah that does not seem normal.
With airplane mode drop 0.2%/hours.
Sorry you are having bad issues. I would try to install U1 firmware and see if that helps.

I'm having the same issue after the recent updates on AT&T. I used to get close to 9 hours SOT and now I barely get 4. Nothing unusual in the battery stats either so I'm not sure what's going on.
Same here. The idle drain is completely insane! It's a shame that the phone suffers from issues like this when you compare it to the price we paid for it. From what I can tell the issue stems from the kernel not being able to figure out the proper frequencies for the cores in idle which leads to **** performance. I'm gonna try to flash the asd4 firmware via odin once. If it doesn't work I'm gonna get a replacement if possible. Currently I get around 4 hours of sot no matter what I do. Doesn't matter what I do which is super weird. My s7 edge which was at least 2 years old gave me a better sot more regularly, so I'm definitely pretty irritated with this. Will update once I flash over odin.

To all who has this issues. First thing to check is .. Does the phone ever enters deep sleep ....
I used this app on my S7..
Wakelock Detector. Can be found in google play.. Sorry cant post links due to my new status here.
A teraz Rozwiazanie . Wychodzimy w MENU - ZAAWANSOWANE FUNKCJE - RUCH I GESTY* - i odznaczamy opcję DOTKNIJ DWUKROTNIE ABY WYBUDZIĆ. następnie w MENU - EKRAN BLOKADY - ALWAYS ON DISPLAY - TRYB WYŚWIETLACZA zmieniamy opcję DOTKNIJ ABY POKAZAĆ na którąś z pozostałych lub całkowicie wyłączamy ALWAYS ON DISPLAY . To powinno rozwiązać problem z baterią w moim przypadku kończąc**pracę**z telefonem w kieszeni po 8 godzinach miałem 30% Baterii a teraz 70% .

BetterBatteryStats shows it goes to deep sleep 99% of the time overnight. No abnormal kernel wakelocks/partial wakelocks/alarms.
A couple of other things I have tried recently unsuccessfully while sleeping (6-8 hours) over the past week:
Safe Mode
Safe Mode + airplane mode
Safe Mode + airplane mode + cache wipe + Google services wipe
Safe Mode + airplane mode + cache wipe + Google services wipe + Remaining Apps in Sleep Mode (Battery Settings>Sleeping Apps)
Safe Mode + airplane mode + cache wipe + Google services wipe + Remaning Apps in Sleep Mode + Max Battery Mode (instead of Optimized Mode)
The best idle drain I got overnight was 15% drain over ~6 hours (~2.5%/hour)
I'll try disabling the Adaptive Battery/Auto Optimization while I have all my Apps in Sleep Mode an Safe Mode. I'll also try another Factory Reset this weekend.
If that doesn't work, I'll schedule an appointment with one of their service centers.
This sucks. My 2-year old S7 Edge still has better battery life than this.
I remember reading a post on Reddit from a guy saying he had a current leak on his faulty motherboard. Maybe you got the same issue on yours.

After reading your comment, I decided to test the phone completely off overnight.
To my surprise the battery drain was still present. From 5PM to 730AM my battery went down from 87% to 60%!!! So about ~2%/hour while the S10 was COMPLETELY OFF.
I'll be taking my phone to the service center sometime this week. For anybody else having crazy drain problems, turn your device completely off and see if the drain is still present. It might be a hardware issue
