SD Card - One (M8) Accessories

Hi everyone,
just ordered the htc one m8 and am looking for an sd card. I have found some decent prices on uhs-1 sd cards but was wondering if the phone actuallu supports this type of card or should i just go for a standard class 10. For everyones information the card is a 64gb transcend micro sdxc class 10 uhs-1 300x.
thanks in advance.
Can't wait to get my hands on this badboy

Can confirm it works ordered one off of amazon for myself and have had no issues. Same one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CHHTOII/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Yes those will work just fine.. It's essentially a class 10 card.

I have the Sandisk 128g card running fine in my M8. One thing I noticed is that it's possible to slide the card in and *not* have a clean contact with the port (but not know that). If you haven't slid it in correctly, when you check storage the card won't appear.
Note also that my card came formatted exFAT. I reformatted it FAT32 so it could be read in my Rezound. Not sure whether the M8 reads exFAT. The major difference is the 4g maximum file size for FAT32. That's not a problem for me.

Cool, I was trying to find out if I could use a 128, I noticed one of the reviews said you could but I always take those with a grain of salt until actual users chime in from the real world. I wonder if NTFS works....

I'm looking at the sandisk 128GB, pretty hard to get a decent price in the UK though.

Does the phone take advantage of high speed cards?, an example being the extreme plus 80/50 micro sd card, most phones seem to only be able to read and write at around 20-30mb/s, I was wondering if newer technology or memory interface of the 801 chip would harness that extra speed.

I have the class 10 64 gb working fine

Depending the phone you are using. For example, in my gslxy s plus, theese speeds are almost impossible

I ordered this one from New Egg for my M8, its a class 10 by Samsung.

When you talk about microsd class 10, are they all equivalent ? Or do they have different speed in class 10

Which one ? Class 10? Xd uhs 1?

FWIW, the 128g comes formatted exFAT. You will need to reformat it to FAT32. Not sure about NTFS. I note on the HTC Dev site they specifically state that they do not have licensing for exFAT use.
Specifically, their FAQ states:
Why are drivers for exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table) missing from kernel source code?
The drivers are subject to non-GPL third party licensing terms and therefore are not included in the kernel
Why doesn’t the exFAT SD card work after loading modules built from this kernel source code onto my device?
exFAT driver code is not included in the kernel, the version numbers and singed signature of the exFAT module on the device and the modules built from the kernel do not match. exFAT module will also not work if developers modify any of the kernel data structures, types or functions that exFAT module uses.

They all vary depending on make and manufacturer specified specs, class 10 only means 10mb/s write, so anything over that even cards capable of 80-90mb/s are still technically in the same class as cards that are only capable of 10-20mb/s. Notably UHS 1 cards are much faster than regular cards.

ExFAT-formatted cards work fine. I'm using one in my M8 right now. They just can't include the proprietary stuff in the kernel source.
No reason to reformat anything.
EDIT: To more thoroughly explain, since Android 4.3 Google has included exFAT compatibility via the open-source fuse daemon. That compatibility continues to exist in KitKat.
The one place an exFAT-formatted card *might* not be recognized is in the bootloader. But I'll have to confirm.
EDIT 2: Confirmed that bootloader will read from exFAT-formatted card too. So all good to go.

So the best type of microsd is the uhs 1 cause they are faster right ?

SDXC support?

I was wondering if this phone supports micro SDXC cards? it would be nice to pop in a 64GB card. I keep running out of space on a 32GB micro SDHC.
Not sure about that but...
What I do when I run out of space is find out what flashable zips I'm currently using and keep those. Then I put the rest of them onto my computer in case I need them later. No need to keep every single zip I've ever used on my SD card.
Also GoogleMusic saves a lot of space that would normally be taken up by all my music.

yeah i already use google music and backup .zip's on my PC... however i do a bit of downloading with my phone + usually keep tv shows/movies (720P) on it as i am away from home frequently and use my phone as my source of entertainment. i'm tempted to just go and buy one of those 64GB cards and try it out but if it doesn't work i'd hope the store will allow me to get a refund on the card.

From Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital#SDHC_and_SDXC_compatibility_issues
"SDHC and SDXC compatibility issues
In the 3.0 specification, the electronic interface of SDHC and SDXC cards is the same. This means that SDHC hosts that have drivers that recognize the newly used capability bits, and have operating system software that understands the exFAT filesystem, are compatible with SDXC cards. The decision to label cards with a capacity greater than 32 GB as SDXC and to use a different filesystem is due solely to the limitations in creating larger filesystems in certain versions of Microsoft Windows.[citation needed] Other operating system kernels, such as Linux, make no distinction between SDHC and SDXC cards, as long as the card contains a compatible filesystem.
SDHC and SDXC cards and hosts have these compatibility issues:
Existing SDHC hosts will only support the SDXC cards at up to UHS104 speeds.[45]
SDXC hosts are backward compatible with SD and SDHC memory cards.[62]
The operating systems that support SDXC, as of 2011, are: Linux (with a proprietary driver for the exFAT filesystem),[63] Microsoft Windows 7, Windows Vista SP1+,[62] Windows XP SP2 or SP3 with KB955704,[64] Windows Server 2008 SP1+, Windows Server 2003 SP2 or SP3 with KB955704, Windows CE 6+, Mac OS X 10.6.5 or later.[65]"

64GB's on HD7!?

Is it possible? I recently bought an HD7 and am ready to upgrade my memory!

Any insight appreciated.

This would be great anyone else have any info on this
UPDATE: I've found two posts by dorianmuthig on this thread referring to the situation.. Still craving a definitive answer!
First of all - big thanks for the post - I'll actually be donating something to u if it works for me -> now, my main qestion is whether SDXCs are recognized - specifically 64GB sdxc. I'm planning on going all out and purchasing a 64GB SDxc MicroSD from Amazon (the Komputerbay 64GB Micro SDXC MicroSDXC Class 6). Theyre relatively new, definitely less than a year old - so I'm wondering whether that file format will cause performance or other issues against windows Phone 7.5 (mango). Thanks
No, SDXC cards are not supported. SDXC cards will simply not be recognized by the phone, the HTC SPL doesn't support them. You can only use microSD or microSDHC cards in the phones, and due to the fact that there are almost no microSDXC cards on the market as of yet, it can take quite a while for the first phones (not just Windows Phone 7 Series) to support them.

I was wondering if 32GB is the biggest you can put into the phone. Maybe I can put in a 64GB Micro SD.
Thoughts?
Yes, 32GB is the largest capacity SD card you can put inside the device, because that's the limit of the SDHC standard. Larger cards are SDXC cards and those aren't supported by the phone. If you put an SDXC card in the phone one of two things will happen: Either the card is smart and pretends to be an SDHC card (see Kingmax cards) capping itself at 32GB (might show as corrupted at first) or it simply won't be recognized. Many Android phones do work with the recently released SanDisk® Mobile Ultra™ microSDXC™ memory cards (http://sandisk.com/products/mobile1-memory-products/sandisk-ultra-microsdxc-card) and odds are that HTC Windows Phones with a recent SPL bootloader do recognize them properly (even though they are UHS-I cards), but I don't know if they'll pass the performance test, nor are they very cheap. If you want to try it, be my guest.
Available card models are: SDSDQY-064G-U46A (Europe) , SDSDQY-064G-A11A (Americas & Pacific)

Side-question - What 32GB MicroSD Card are you using? I might be stuck with 32 measly gigs! I really wanted to stick it to all the 64GB rockin' iphone users who laugh at WP7 [but, not my Galaxy Note though!]
Anyone can add the final word to this?
if it's possible, reliable without decreasing its performances, i'll look for sdxc soon!!
I think they take the card and reformat it fat32 so the phone can read 64g card.
Sent from my Desire HD using xda premium
Nothing more about that??
As far as i know there is no support for sdxc that is 64 gb card type..... As for the lower gb's are sdhc which is suported.....
Here some info from wiki might help you understand a little better.....
Host devices that comply with newer versions of the specification provide backward compatibility and accept older SD cards, but older host devices do not recognize newer cards.
A newer card may offer greater capacity than the host device can handle.
A newer card may use a file system the host device cannot navigate.
Use of an SDIO card requires the host device be designed for the input/output functions the card provides.
SDXC
The Secure Digital Extended Capacity (SDXC) format supports cards up to 2 TB (2048 GB), compared to a limit of 32 GB for SDHC cards in the SD 2.0 specification.

well there are 2 methods:
using official rom to upgrade the card, i believe only certain cards are supported: [Tutorial] Upgrade your HTC HD7 memory to 32 GB
The other method is using a custom rom called xmod , which claims u can use any type of sdcard : [Tutorial] How to recover SDcard using HD7
It is better if u go with option 2 which is a more viable method, but it requires installing a custom rom.
I'm pretty sure the HD7 can take a 64GB card - the HD2 uses the same software as the HD7, and it supports 64GB SDXC.

[Q] Razr i and 64gb cards

Hi
All the specs i se say that the Razr I has a 32gb limit for microc SD cards - a few people here have said (in passing) they have 64gb cards. So I was wondering whjat people have got working - the price of 64gb card in the UK is getting around the £35 - £25 was my "Buy pint" for the 32gb I have - doubling that would be cool.

I use a 64GB microSD class 10 card on my RAZR i. It doesn't use all of the storage, just about 53+GB but it still works fine.

'Sandisk Ultra 64GB Class 10 Micro SD Card with SD Adapter - FFP'
53gb seems like a big loss? Maybe the cluster size you chose wasn't the best choice?
The 32 limit is to do with windows by default will not make a fat32 partition bigger than 32gb so just use a 3rd party partition tool to make it 64gb.
I use the one from www.partitionwizard.com
Also don't format to exfat as the phone won't read it.

Yeah, if you can swing it, make sure to get one that is minimum of UHS1 (which is equal to or better than Class 10). The IO pathways appear to be _MUCH_ better on this model. If it can swing USB3, it can handle the IO throughput of a higher rated card. I would imagine with a better kernel we might eventually be able to handle larger SD and Micro SD cards.

I feel stupid posting to a thread that's 4+ yrs old but I need to know. Does the dock have issues reading a micro SD Card with adapter? I bought this device last year used. All is good except I prefer to watch movies from the dock SD card port. The card goes it great and a firm push it clicks into place, but no response from the device. Does not show up in ASUS File Manager app. Completely stock and locked bootloader running v4.4.2 and 11.4.1.29 with DEC 18 2014 kernel. Every thing else on dock works well except for the wobble. I cut two pieces of credit card like strips to tighten the fit and it work well. My micro SD Card w/ adapter is good and works fine in my Win7 PC. That's how I put movies/music on the card. Best MicroSD Card for the M8.

So I'm trying to find out some technical information for the M8. I'm in the market for an SD card. There are different read and write speeds on the Sandisk cards. What is the theoretical maximum speed that the M8 would benefit from. Such as loading games and running media off of it. Is there one or in the real world, would I literally not notice the difference between an Ultra card and Extreme Plus card?
Wouldn't notice the difference. Speeds vary between same cards anyways so it is also luck of the draw.
Sent from HTC One_M8 using hofo app.
you probably wouldn't notice much as far as loading media. That said I did get one of the sandisks and noticed improved transfer speeds. I was too used to using the internal memory on my Gnex and for the month I used an S3 before the m8 I was getting sick of the slow card I had.
As far as between the extreme and ultra I can't tell you.
Whatever card you do buy, make sure not to buy it on eBay. The majority of them on there are counterfeits.
This one is supposedly pretty baller... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA12K0PF3125
Up to 70 MB/s! People say real world up to 20 MB/s writes and 60 MB/s reads, which is great for a MicroSD card.

I have a Sandisk 64 ultra in my device currently. I also have useed a 128g but those come formatted exFAT. You *can* use exFAT cards in the M8, but you will have to be rooted and running a custom kernel that supports exFAT (I believe there is only one such kernel or possibly two). Otherwise, you need to reformat the 128g card as FAT32. Since my current kernel does not support exFAT, I'm using the 64g until I need the space.
Cards
Sandisk is the best and you must have to search internet for technical assistance, writing and reading speeds etc.
128gb exfat works just fine with stock kernel and at least two custom kernels. I use it with mrjaydee82's gpe rom with no problems.

Yeah i couldve sworn my sandisk 128gb is formatted exfat. 64gb can be formatted exfat also. I think the big difference is trying to move a file larger than 4gb to fat32 is a problem. Exfat is fine. I wonder what f2fs would be like for SD cards though.

128gb exfat works just fine with stock kernel and at least two custom kernels. I use it with mrjaydee82's gpe rom with no problems.

I ran Codecraft's kernels for a while and they support exFAT. Currently running scrosler's "stock" modified kernel which supports init.d and it specifically states that it does NOT support exFAT. I haven't gotten to a point where the 4g limitation is meaningful, though.
I have a few... Like 15. Kingston, Transcend, Samsung and SanDisk. 8GB to 128GB. Most are 16-32GB. All rated Class 10, but some rated 95Mbps and lower. In general usage, I don't feel any difference.

Those who are using the Sandisk 128gb card, would you say it's fast enough to set as the destination for pictures and video? I'm thinking of getting one and moving my photo and video destination to the external, but I'm worried that the shutter speed (and video quality) will suffer because of it.
I've left the cam to internal NAND but I tend to use the 32-64GB typically. I've only used the 128GB on two outings and it worked fine although it was nearly empty. It mostly goes in my XS-1.

As long as its Class 10, it should be fine. And it looks like all 128 GB MicroSD cards from Sandisk are Class 10, UHS-1.
I have a Class 10, UHS-1 Sandisk card (although only 32 GB) and it takes video and Zoes (those would be the most speed intensive) seamlessly as well as pics.

Yes, is there a reason why it wouldn't?
