lock screen message pop up quick reply - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

Hi, I'm new to touchwiz.. I get message notification on lock screen, but doesn't look like i can click it, or open it directly to message app. is there a setting somewhere? or do i have to unlock phone, then swipe down notification area or open message ap..thanks

Just go into your messages app, then settings, and click on notifications. You should be able to set it up from there.

Can someone show a video of receiving a text with the phone off? Wanting to see if Samsung got rid of the way it was on the S4. I hated the way you had to access the text message from the lock screen on the S4.

I would also very much like to see how this phone handles text messages on the lock screen. I am debating between this phone and the M8 and I loved the way my M7 handled lockscreen notifications. Also I heard this has the text pop up like the G2 when you are in another app.

Yeah I here ya. I was in the store yesterday and couldn't make my mind up on M8 or S5 lol. Tomorrow is the day so hopefully I'll know all my answers. My wife has the G2 and I like how text are handled.

Everyone's needs are different, both are good phones, if you want dev support M8 and all metal construction all day everyday...if u need the better camera, waterproofing S5...screen is personal preference some like amoled some like lcd, the cpu/soc is the same, yea s5 is running at 2.5 u can easily make that up with a custom kernel on the m8 (running mine @ 2.6) storage 32gb internal vs 16gb at launch for the s5..do u like sense or tw...everyone's needs vary.

The 2 things holding me back is TW vs Sense & Dev support. This locked bootloader on S5 has got me worried. Not sure if we will at least get Safestrap like on the Note 3.

Yea the lack of development worries me. I loved the dev community on my M7 and the M8 is already off to an excellent start. I am usually ok with just root but it seems like knox will trip even with root so that turns me off. I also am a bit lukewarm on touchwiz but I haven't used it since the note 2. I really like Sense though but I want water resistance and a removable battery. As you can see I'm very torn lol.

[Q] What makes the Nexus One?

So I am a G2 owner, and I've been thinking about getting a Nexus One for a long time. But I am curious as to why people have held onto their Nexus for so long. Can it access the HSPA+ network (t-mobile 4G) would it be worth owning the phone? I am not trying to get rid of my G2 but I would love to own the equivalent to the G2
It's a developer device No HSPA+, but it can do about everything else. Plus it get the latest OTA's first, and the best chefs have cooked up some awesome Roms!!

Since this gets OTA's first does this make the G2 the second device to get the OTA's since it runs vanilla 2.2 out the box?
its just awesome. no 4g, but as was said before me gets the OTAs first, many apps are developed on the N1 so compatability isn't really an issue (like skype and fennec). its easy to root with or without voiding your warranty, and it just works
IMHO Nexus One is one of if not the best android device out
Its the daddy of android phones thats why its by google not with google

Unlikely and the G2 doesn't run vanilla 2.2.
you won't understand until you have one
that's what happened to me
OS Updates, and in some cases apps
RGB trackball
though I'm not sure which order
It's the feel of it in your hand really.
There's only three other things that feels better in my hand.
It's a very fast phone and it can run anything the way it's supposed to be run and it is always very responsive. It's really thin, mostly because of no physical keyboard but that's why I don't like the keyboards. I have it exactly the way I want it with CyanogenMod and HTC_IME soft keyboard, why would I want to get anything new? It has a lot of practical features, like an ambient light sensor for auto backlight adjustment, a SUPER bright LED, 720p video recording, wifi hotspot and a real headphone output.
The nexus one is an awesome phone and really the only way I think it could be improved is with more internal storage for apps. Although, I usually keep the larger apps like games on my SD card anyway.

Nexus 4 to HTC One GE

Hello,
I currently have an Nexus 4 with RootBox. I have been thinking about buying the HTC One GE because of the speakers and other things. However, I am wandering if any one out there moved from a Nexus 4 to an HTC One. What's your experience? What do you miss? Or what advise would you have for someone like me? I am happy with my Nexus 4 but the HTC One looks and feels awesome!
i strangely miss the onscreen buttons.... but love everything else

It has been a while since I had the Nexus 4, I had a Note 2 between it and my HTC One. Here is what I miss:
Software buttons.
(Generally) more stable custom ROMs
That's all. I really liked the extra flexibility over hardware buttons, and I'm not a fan of HTC's button layout for the One
When I used my Nexus 4, I actually used CM 10.1 nightlies, but on the One I'm running the 4.3 GE ROM with no complaints. I have no reason to move to CM (but I keep manually adding the CM messaging app).
I wasn't a fan of the Note 2 so we'll just ignore it. These are the things I LOVE about the One coming from the N4.
32 GB Storage
USB OTG (without requiring special kernel or Y cable)
Front speakers
OPTION of running the Sense ROM

Thanks! I like the design of the HTC One. I am a little concerned about the buttons lay out. I have the menu button permanently in my nexus 4. But I have heard that you get the menu bar of death on the HTC one. Is this an issue in the HTC one with 4.3? Can I remap the buttons in the stock ROM?

How did I forget LTE as a plus?
Anyways, YES you can get rid of the black menu bar on the One thank goodness. I'm running the stock GE ROM with Faux kernel 005 (haven't had the chance to upgrade to 006 yet). I just use Logo to Menu (pressing slightly above the HTC logo acts as a menu button press) and then use a buildprop edit (qemu.hardwarekeys=1 or something similar, acting from memory right now). to disable the black bar.
That one change made the HTC layout bearable but still not my favorite. If you like the One's design and are coming from a Nexus 4, there are few reasons you should have any complaints as long as you're content with Google's stock ROM. CyanogenMod is far from bad, but still has more bugs on the One than the Nexus 4. The Google Edition ROM does a GREAT job of alleviating the annoyances of ROM flashing for those who just want Sense gone and a reasonably stock Android with speedy updates

Thanks dude. You are being very helpful. A couple of more things, how is Faux's kernell? Also, where is the info for rooting and recovery? You are convincing me to just go ahead and order it.
Hi,
I have both devices and I'm not disapointed with the One: sound (realy awesome compared to the Nexus 4 for both volume and quality), screen (brighter and "cleaner"), apn (ok it's not perfect but compared to the Nexus 4, the One is better) are better. HTC did an awesome work with Sense 5 (fast and smooth) but if you prefer an HTC One Google edition you have almost the look of the Nexus 4 software plus the pros as I mentionned above.
The two hardware buttons are an error in my opinion and when we're used to the back/home/multitasking buttons... it's a little hard at the beginning with the One. But with some rom's you can have them like with the Nexus...
Just two things is for the Nexus 4 (like the other Nexus), it have a better development support, and about the updates (Maybe the One Google Edition will receive the update faster than the "classic" One).
And a Nexus is... a Nexus... simply a different device
But for me it is worth...
About root, etc... All is in the dev sections.
I do not own a Nexus 4 (but a friend of mine does). And i would definitely recommend you to buy a One ge (speakers, screen, performance, metall).
I LOVE my HTC One

I have absolutely no complaints with Faux's kernel, in fact I've just about ALWAYS used his kernels on my devices since the Atrix 4G, as long as he had one available. Mine is ridiculously stable and my battery lasts all day. I was overclocking to 1.9 GHz but decided to drop back to stock 1.7 just because OC was unnecessary.
I'm pretty sure this should still work for rooting, recovery etc. If not, there's an All-In-One somewhere around here. Shouldn't be too hard to find http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2273376
I miss the N4 but the battery was just not good. I also had the Note 2 in between.
To be honest, the One is probably my stepping stone until the N5 comes out, assuming the battery is decently sized.

I just oder it!! Where can I find more info on setting up the menu button and removing the menu bar? Thanks!
Logo to Menu information will be within the kernel threads, I just use the Fauxclock app since I already owned it from N4. TricksterMOD has the same option.
Some kernels use aroma and let you choose to get rid of the black bar during installation. I'll post my exact buildprop edit in this thread so you already have it

Congrats on ordering it! I'm not going to go into too much detail on the two devices since you have already ordered it. The only thing I miss about the N4 is the onscreen buttons as previously mentioned. The ONE's button layout doesn't bother me much at all though and after a couple of days it becomes second nature. The black menu bar really isn't bad since you are used to sacrificing that screen real estate with Nexus onscreen buttons anyway. The bar only appears on a few apps (depending on the ones you use) but if you absolutely hate it then a custom kernel is your solution. Other than that the ONE is an upgrade to the N4 in almost every way especially with sound quality and music. Let us know how you like your new device!

It's not hard at all. It's basically just like a Nexus. When I got it I told myself I was going to sell it when the N5 comes out but I listen to a ton of music and I am so spoiled by the amazing sound quality both through the speakers and headphones that I don't think I am going to make the change. Not to mention it is the best display ever made on a device. You made a good choice

Right. I also think the bump in specs from the N4 to N5 won't be that great especially if they plan on selling it at similar price points. My only concern with the ONE GPE was how quick the updates would come and now that I know they are just a few days after the Nexus devices I can rest easy knowing it will be supported for some time to come.

Yeah, that was the other thing that convinced me. The update came fast and the kernel came even faster. It will be interesting to see. My guess is that the price will go up by $30 to cover the LTE license since most surely the nexus has to come with LTE.

Sell me on the S5....

Hey guys, I got the M8 last Thursday but am not totally convinced that it is the phone for me yet. I have some gripes with it, but overall I like the phone. First I have two questions about the S5, and then I will post the gripes that I have with the M8 that I posted in the M8 forum. After that, let me know what you think. Here are my two questions about the S5:
1. Will the Touchwiz lag from the S4 be gone? I was always a Samsung phone guy, but I just couldn't deal with the lag on the S4. It drove me absolutely nuts. I'm hearing some rumblings that the new UI on the S5 is free of lag? Has anybody played with the phone yet and can chime in on this?
2. I know the speaker won't sound as good as the stereo speakers on the M8, but will it at least be as loud? That's all I care about, I don't care about the quality. I will use headphones most of the time, but I want it to be loud enough for notifications, etc.
Ok, now on to my gripes about the M8 that I posted earlier in the M8 forum:
1. After all the constant "excellent build quality" praise that the M7 and now M8 constantly get, I really just don't see it. Based on materials alone, yes, the M7 and M8 are excellent in materials. In actual build quality, they are both quite poor in my opinion. Both of my M7's from last year had screen fitment issues where they weren't flush with the top and bottom speaker grills. It annoyed the heck out of my OCD self and was one of the few reasons why I returned them both.
My M8 has a very similar issue. On the right side of the phone, the top and bottom speaker grills are raised above the glass. So my finger snags when I'm swiping up or down on the screen. Super annoying and I'm going to exchange it for sure, if I even keep this phone in general.
2. The LED notification light....if you can call it one. Is HTC the only smartphone manufacturer that doesn't understand the importance and desire from consumers to have a bright, legible and multi-colored LED notification light? The one on the M7 and now M8 is pathetic. Might as well not even have one. It is the size of a pinhole, can only show green or amber, and it is next to useless.
To HTC's credit, the one on the M8 does seem to be a bit more visible than it was on the M7, but it could be in my head. And also keep in mind that I knew exactly what I was getting into when I bought the M8, so it's my own fault with this issue. I still wanted to mention it however as it still bothers me.
3. The camera. I will keep this one short as there is constant discussion about it and people have varying opinions. My opinion is that it's lackluster, and I never thought I would say my Nexus 5 camera is better than a premium flagship phone. But it is, and I will leave it at that.
And once again, I knew what I was getting into before I purchased the M8, but I fell for HTC's duo camera marketing thinking it might somehow make 4mp's better than 4mp's. It didn't and I'm disappointed for the most part.
4. Software....I don't know what it is, but Sense 6 feels cold and empty to me. Coming from the Nexus 5, I know this might sound like a bizarre statement, but something feels off and I can't quite pinpoint it. It feels, dare I say, boring. Yes it is fast and smooth, I will give it that. But that's about where it ends for me.
I also can't wrap my head around HTC still not addressing their messaging app oddity. On the M7, when you got a new text message and opened the app, the new message wouldn't immediately appear and it would refresh quickly and then it would show up. I don't know about anyone else, but that is super duper annoying to me. And it's sadly still present on the M8.
Some might say, "use Hangouts or a 3rd party app". And I would say "nope". I hate how Hangouts handles SMS and MMS and I don't like to use 3rd party apps for text messaging. Just personal preference.
5. The physical aspect of the phone itself....it's just too tall. I understand they had to cram amps, a bigger battery, etc into the phone. But almost as tall as the Note 3? Come on. The phone feels good in the hand however, but it's just a little cumbersome. And I still hate the top of phone power button placement even thought they moved it from the left side to right.
After all of that being said, do you think the S5 is the device for me? I'm in quite a dilemma because my 14 day return policy of the M8 expires on the say that the S5 starts shipping. So I kinda need to make a decision blind unless I can get my hands on an S5 to test before then.
Thoughts? Thanks!
1. Yes. 110% gone. Dalvik to Dalvik as smooth as the stock Nexus 5.
2. It's pretty loud, sufficient enough for me when I tested it.
What area are you in? Most AT&T stores and some best buys have the S5 on display. Oh, and I'd for sure recommend the S5

M8 doesn't have an on screen menu button... But with either phone I'm sure you could change functionality if you rooted. I'm happy with a multitasking button instead of menu though. It's not too hard to reach the top for me.

I had the same feelings about the M8. I had actually gone to Verizon planning to buy it, but was disappointed with the phone hands on. The phone obviously looks great, but it's got some issues otherwise. It was sitting next to a G2, which actually looked much nicer in terms of the screen, and smaller bezels. The camera got terrible reviews, and as someone who doesn't listen to music from phone speakers the large speakers at the top and bottom of the phone were unsightly and make it seem longer than necessary. I also didn't like the software, and particularly the navigation bar, it felt uncomfortable to use. As a Verizon user, I also want bootloader access which is particularly tough to come by with HTC.
I haven't gone hands on with the S5 yet, but I consider the S4 to be superior to the M8...So I hope to be pleased.
S5 is miles ahead of the S4 IMO. I used it and was VERY impressed. DisplayMate said it was the best screen they'd ever seen on any smartphone.

Hey WizeGuyDezignz, hello from a fellow San Diegan.
I am in a similar position to you.
Either of these phones will be a quantum leap from my HTC Vivid.
Having owned HTC phones for years I really want to like the the new One.
Not having handled one, I still think that it's awkward size will bug me as will the lack luster camera (not that I usually need 16MP but it's nice to know it's there in case you do).
Things that don't having me rushing to get the S5 are
1. Touchwiz is unknown to me
2. Linked to 1. the fact that there is the Knox issue as far as rooting is concerned.
3. I think the dust cover over the charge port could be a weak point and would drive me crazy having to fiddle with it to get access every day. Specially seeing that regardless of which phone I get they will be protected by a case-mate tough case which has been outstanding for me on my Vivid.
I look forward to more hands on reviews once the S5 starts selling here.

I will 110% get the wireless charging backplate/charger from Best Buy (I'd recommend it to anyone getting this phone ).
Also, the new TouchWiz is quite intuitive IMO. It's very simple and you should have no issues picking it up.

The inductive charging is a great idea but I am sure it wont work through a protective cover.
Oh yeah with a case it's unlikely to work, unless you get a wireless charging capable case. I go naked on my phones, so it's no big deal

S5 may have improved upon s4's display, but I am waiting for a comparison between S5 and Z2's display.
From what i have read Z2 has a better display than M8.
So yeah i am still waiting for that[emoji6]

tmobile note 5 i need help

Ok so im a long time tmobile galaxy user.. started with the S2 went all the way up skipping the S5 switched to note3 and here i am with the note 5..
1) on the note 4 when i used the keyboard that came with the phone if i typed the word happy or sad, dog, cat, crying, baby, love.. anything, it would suggest an emoji... i can't seem to find a setting for the note 5 to do that. Is it possible?
2) i do not do not do not like the call popup if i get a call while I'm doing something else is there anyway to get rid of that?
I love having the Spen but I'm wondering if i should have chose the S6 edge plus. The note seems to be more for business purposes now.

You can ignore the call now like before... is better now because it the popup covers up less of the screen and you can ignore it or answer it on speakerphone and continue working...

I know that but i don't like it. Its not better to me personally. I guess i can/will get used to it.
No comment on my emoji Suggestions hu? Lol. I want to find my receipt because i think tmboile gives 14 to switch. Im wondering if the s6edge plus is more like the note 4. It would be hard to say goodbye to my Spen though.. urg sometimes i don't like change.
Not sure about the emojis

Is anyone going to get the s8 active??

So the s8 active goes on sale this coming Friday. Anyone going with this. I know it's not as aesthetically pleasing but 4000mah battery and 600mhz band 71 support has me seriously thinking.

Just got it yesterday, it's awesome. Needs root but so far so good.
I agree. Just got mine as well. Sapped on a glass screen protector just to prevent scratches and installed substratium dark theme to black out all my apps. Happy

Just got mine last night from S7 Active. Everything is awesome but the position of FPS is hard to locate!
I'm super happy with mine aswell! Hopefully the install base can eclipse the regular s8 on T-Mobile and we get some great roms cause the signal where I work is amazing now.

also received mine few days ago and my friend got it sim-unlocked. What a great device!!!!
I purchased one for my wife who abuses phones (she previously broke 2 phones in a matter of 3 weeks) and so far so good. I would like to root it. I found this link in a different forum but I am not sure how reliable it is...

Has anyone rooted their phone?
I wonder how many people will get this phone and hopefully we will have some love from developers! ?
My cousin got it and I was able to check it out in person. I wouldn't mind switching my S8 for an Active. Seeing it and using it made me start thinking about it. Hope to hear about everyone's experiences with the phone!
I have one and love it
Got it first week of December. GREAT phone. Battery life is incredible (coming from S6 Edge) and screen is amazing. No root, and I always root my phones, but I haven't had many issues or circumstances where I miss root.
