i am about to buy a smartphone (for the first time since my dumbphone SE W595)
and i want something perfect that'll stay with me like 2 years or so
i checked all of the new phones (Desire + n1 + Galaxy S and millions!) and honestly even with all these teachy stuff and zippy processor .. i didn't like a phone more than the Milestone
Big screen + QWERTY keyboard + pretty good camera for a go-go price !
but .. it was released on the end of 2009 and have a 550MHz (though it can be overclocked anytime) and that locked bootloader (ugh!)
wat i want on a phone is 1-watch movies & videos , 2-loading my almost 5500 set of music in it 3- hardcore 3D gaming , 4-good camera , 5-QWERTY (regular teenager stuff) and Android !
is it really the right phone for me or i should wait for something better (e.g Milestone 2?) (as the international Droid 2) ?

I would wait, the milestone has been out for a while now and there should be some new models coming out soon. If I were you I would wait for a new qwerty android phone to be released.
I would also wait. The droid does sound like the perfect phone for you, but the thing is, all the stuff you really look forward to doing kills your battery. I have a rooted droid clocked at 1ghz. Battery life really isn't that great, but overall i sincerely love the phone.
I would wait, too...I have the Milestone, is a really great phone (as you said, big screen+QWERTY is just perfect) but buying it now is pointless, in my opinion. I would suggest to wait for new devices similar to the Milestone to come out and then make a choose.
And the camera isn't that great, really.

so there's nothing new about your dilemma.i'd suggest you go for it, because new would come but then it's price will delay or postpone you a prized possession. secondly, nowadays a mobile phone is more worthy if it it's most popular in hacking community, like Xperia X1, in my sane mind i'd never suggest this phone to anyone, but imagine ubuntu and android along with Winmo, the phone is a must have. And my dearest SE P1i.
Go for it, you'd never regret a moment of it am already looking for Xperia X1 and Milestone (second or even third hand).

everytime i try to convinve myself to buy the milestone by saying (i'm just a teenager .. why would i need a 1GHz CPU and stuff like that ?) but honestly i just can't help it .. for god's sake the galaxy spica is faster than that !
beside that locked bootloader .. when i thought about it for like 2 minutes i say what's the joy having an android when you can't root it/install ROMs ? because back in the days when i had the w595 i used to change themes & flash menus like a maniac !

I literally just picked up the Milestone on Telus two days ago, and don't regret it. It's pretty sweet, and I don't see the Droid X or the Incredible coming (I assume you're in Canada, as you're looking at the Milestone..) any time soon up here.
With the customization and rooting available, it's a pretty sweet phone.
Just me though. Good luck with picking a phone.
The driod 2 is released any day now but I wonder how long we have to wait for a milestone 2
Edit: I bought my Milestone 2 weeks ago. And I love it.
it will outdated in term of operating system, currently we only get android 2.1 which everybody already has 2.2
and next time 3.0 released we can only bite our nail ^^

Hi guys, actually i've more or less pretty decided to get the milestone already due to it's nice form factor and android, also pretty much i'd like to have a qwerty keyboard for a change.
I'm currently rocking a HD2, and i don't intend to sell it yet. But was interested in android after running froyo 2.2 and sense desire build on it. So i was like pretty much wanting to get an adroid device to play with and see how it goes. No suitable options in the marketplace for nexus 1 and it's way over my budget, i reckon i can get a milestone (brand new) over here in sg for around 550 Singapore Dollars, so i thought i get it! (TODAY, LOL)
So i thought i'd pop by xda for trusted opinions and rooting possibilities, and i'm faced with little support for the milestone as compared to the crazy HD2 forum, LOL. So i'm wondering is it possible to root my milestone? And what do you guys mean by bootloader locked? And why? Pardon me as i'm pretty new to android, had a g1 in the past, but didn't play much with it and sold it, now i'm back! Haha.
I'd appreciate any links to other sites for help and more info and prolly more support than what we're getting here? If you feel uneasy to post, you could pm me. Thanks!!

Oh ya, there's no wireless teethering on milestone? Meaning my laptop uses my phone's network?!

Man, it's really lacking in support for milestone over here at xda, or there's nothing to support at all? LOL. For the first time, i'm a little disappointed with xda. Hahahaha, i hope people could point me in the right direction for milestone news and tips etc. Anyways, heading to get it now!!
Quick answers:
- You can root the phone, as in, have access to modify the system at root level.
- A locked bootloader means you can't use any other kernels except those signed by Motorola themselves. We're all hoping for methods like 2ndboot and kexec to help us out here
- You can tether via USB,WiFi, or Bluetooth.
i have a Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 with windows mobile.. I originally wanted the Milestone but since i could get the X1 for half the price of the Milestone i decided to get it. I am now in the process of selling the X1 and getting the Milestone (probably next week)

Thanks. I went ahead and get it anyway. Haha. I'm hoping for more support and some flashing goodness soon! Plus 2.2 froyo!! Some issues or concerns i found so far. I realised that the device gets hot pretty easily and not normal kind of heat, rather at the area below the camera at the back when holding landscape. And in gmail app, you can never empty your trash permanently. This kinda sucks, as the trash always restore.

where did you get it for 550? I was at a starhub shop the other day and it wasn't even close to 550.
If you don't want to wait, there's always the Samsung Epic 4G or Galaxy S Pro, whatever it is called in your region. If you don't mind that there is no camera flash.

Are those phones even out yet ? Would you be able to install custom ROMs for them in the future?
The milestone looks better in my opinion.. (physically) but seeing how its got a locked bootloader... im afraid of buying a phone (with so many options at this day) that could be already stuck on its final OS version.
If only the Xperia X10 had a physical keyboard (i dont like the mini pro version) id probably buy it. I want an android phone with a physical keyboard not only for texting but also for emulators and the milestone seems the way to go ... as its about $420 too. (amazon)
I'm in the same boat as some of you. A former Xperia X1 user who got tired of flashing with ROMs that aren't stable and sluggish. I don't want to get an official ATT phone cause I am on the MediaNet unlimited plan and I like to tether to my laptop. I also like having a QWERTY keyboard and been wanting to try Andriod OS. Some questions:
1) What specifics should I look for to ensure I'm getting the Telus version of DROID and unlocked for AT&T to ensure 3G?
2) I saw recent news that there is no official support for Tethering or wifi router mode on DROID, but are there apps (even the Xperia X1 did).
3) Can anyone tell from just what's listed on Overstock and Amazon whether those phones will work on ATT 3G? Many thanks.

With the HTC One having such high specs is there really any need to flash custom Roms? In my opinion all of them seem the same and don't look or feel any different to the stock rom on the One. The only benefit I can see is for Root access.
Im sure there is a lot of "under the hood" tweaks that are done but are these really noticeable or beneficial to the end user? Other peoples thoughts would be interesting.

Actually yes, I wish to get CM working fully on HTC One.
It gives us an alternate experience than what HTC wanted us to.
Best of all, you don't have to wait so long for HTC to update their phones.
Especially when they abandon the One, we rely on CM.
But I'm really hoping for the success of the One, nobody could resist the look and feel of the One.

I totally agree the updates and the benefit of getting rid on Sense if you dont like it is a real benefit. But is there a need for multiple Sense custom roms?

That's subjective I guess. But for something like example HTC DROID DNA or Butterfly, Sense 5 gets ported before HTC did. So I guess it's also a huge benefit.
Earlier updates is the main reason why I will be rooting, these phone networks take ages to update it's unavailable!!
Also there are some very nice skinned roms out there
I won't be unlocking my bootloader for a while. Not until I am at least sure that my device is working 100% and that will take a couple of weeks. I was eager to root it etc but I was reading about HTC's warranty and it seems as though it is a very long winded process. Maybe you wish to do the same?

yep ill be in no hurry either.
when i finally get a device im happy with yea i will root and flash custom rom, but not CM - Sense 5 is great and IMO is much better than stock JB - there are a few minor things I would like added, but I have no doubt they will be added to custom sense 5 roms in due course.
to me, there is no point in being a flashaholic. flash the latest stable base, and then keep up with custom kernels for battery.

Personally something that will push me over the unlock bootloader line is when either when A) IF the HTC logo can become mapped as a button, or B) A full relock becomes available lol
For me, absolutely. I consider some features (such as long press vol key to skip tracks) essential. There are also always some visual things I like to change no matter how well it is made
I just need root to enable volume key wake, and ill want to remap the keys. Everything else looks flawless

No. To my knowledge, the built in browser has flash support.

While there's obviously no NEED, a lot of people will prefer to flash ROMs for a variety of different reasons.
I'd say the main reasons are;
*The ability to have a pure AOSP look which is preferred by a lot of people (especially those who come from a Nexus device). Also, a lot of people don't like the look/feel of Sense and will therefore want to change the UI to something which is more preferable to them.
I, for example, have never tried Sense before and could quite possibly hate it once I finally test it. On the flip side of that, I may love it but at least custom ROMs will give me the ability to completely change the UI whilst giving me a ton more customizations and optimizations than a custom launcher would do.
*As mentioned at the end of the first reason, customization is a huge part of what a lot of people do with their devices. For example, when I had my SGS2 I used to love the ability to flash a simple ROM and have a ton of customization at my fingertips, so I could edit the look of my phone to my hearts content.
*Some people are simply flashaholics and have ORD (Obsessive ROM-flashing/updating Disorder). I'll normally flash every ROM in sight if the device is new and there aren't many ROMs available yet. This way it gives me a good early decision as to what type of ROM I'd prefer on said device. However, once the device starts getting more development and more ROMs start appearing in quick succession, I'll then make my mind up about which ROM to choose and generally won't change ROM for the vast majority of the devices lifetime.

I unlocked, rooted and flashed now because in a few months time the phone will be setup perfectly; all the right apps, all the right data, all in the right place (and HTC might of discovered a way to do a Sensation on us (S-Off))
With the phone rooted I can be relatively confident of getting it back to my currently backed up state after any major updates (and, when I finally install some games, get their progress restored as well)

Sense means HTC. I don't see any reason to buy HTC if I'm not gonna use sense.
Because HTC makes great hardware. I buy HTC exclusively, but I rip sense off it ASAP and put AOKP or CM or something without sense. Nexus devices are generally not top of the line hardware, they're supposed to be a benchmark for development (i.e. midrange). That said, N4 has more impressive specs than usual, but I can't imagine buying an LG phone. I have never realized LG even made smartphones, only flip phones until the N4 was released.
Still, HTC makes best hardware, I just generally don't like sense. That said, sense 5 does look interesting.

To a certain extent, yes, I agree with you on that statement. However, sometimes you just need a change and it is nice to have the option of running AOSP roms as well. I would much rather go back and forth between Sense/AOSP than TouchWiz/AOSP after having my GS3.

any one regret rooting the one ? i had a htc sensation rooted but alll the roms seem to have some thing that did not work...the one seems to be fine the way it is so before i root it i wanted some option ..... do the the htc one also have roms with broken parts of it ?

Really depends on how you use your device and how you feel about the stock setup. I didn't like having all the bloatware that AT&T packed on and really wanted to play around more under the hood, but obviously that is not for everyone and comes with all of the standard risks.
I'm running the latest ViperOne ROM and really love the options that can be set and tweaked. So many ROM options available for the device the choices are almost endless.
You haven't tried Trickdroid 9.0. Amazing rom that's not missing anything! insane battery life also

I've rooted every android phone I've had and flashed numerous roms on each one but this is the first device that I've left completely stock. I don't even have an unlocked bootloader. The phone is just fine the way it is, I will not be rooting or unlocking the bootloader on this phone anytime soon. Myself and many other users used to root our phones and flash custom roms because android phones used to be incredibly laggy and we always wanted better performance. Overclocking our processors was the norm but now android has matured so much and devices are ridiculously powerful now there is just no need to change them. Even if we were to still overclock our devices you wouldn't see a change in performance.
It's completely up to you though.
Personally, I think rooting is worth it just for the ad blocking it allows; i.e. editing the hosts file. Running a custom rom, being able to backup with titanium and nandroids, and changing radios is just gravy. And if you've ever had a device go south without a custom recovery already on it it's incredibly difficult to fix.

The wife bought a refurb Acer tablet - no warranty (I think it was thirty days.) Was ridiculous to restore. I learned my lesson, well! And I'd rather be able to fix it myself than be without while I wait for someone else to. To each their own...

yeah if this was a slow phone or laggy maybe i would,but a have read a few tread with custom roms and some are having trouble with them,think i'll wait on update....although the 4.2.2 update seems to not be coming to t-mobile,all i got so far was a small update.
I have only had the One for a few weeks, but I rooted it and flashed CM10.1 before I even put my SIM in it. Definitely worth it. No reason to deal with carrier restrictions.
t mobile told me there is no 4.2.2 update for the htc one......HTC said the same thing,so now im wondering how come people are saying there receiving this update..

There will be no 4.2.2 update from tmobile, my guess is they are gonna skip that and go straight to 4.3 plus they said it on the internet on the news that htc said it themselves and that there would be no customer benefit for an update like 4.2.2 so they said they were gonna skip it and bring up 4.3.
The update started along the lines of outside international countries that aren't big market carriers and then it rolled on slowly...so no one's lying you just have to do some research on the internet but that 4.2.2 update never got to the US thats why it was never rolled out to large carriers to their customers..
Hopefully this gave you some insight on things that are currently happening.

It had to have been those in the UK or in some parts of the world because it started from one small part of the world, I mean those that are not on carriers, and it did end up in parts of the UK but it never got to the US and if people who are in the US saying they got the update they changed their CID to a region that had the update rolling out so really no one on this side of the US has that software except verizon because they shipped those one models with the current software, and the GPE ones got an update first because well those aren't sold by carrier they are sold by htc themselves on their website. So yes people have said that they receive it but unless there is proof I wouldn't go off of their word, they more than likely did something to their phone to get that software, they might have a custom rom on their phone or done something to get it officially but here in the us there is no word of 4.2.2 ever coming to their customers....of course except verizon....

Not always. Running a stock 4.2.2 Rom or something without major modifications will be smooth for a long time. I ran Mike's stock build rooted for almost a month with no issues at all.
It all depends on what you want from it. If you want all the themes and icon changes and modify this and that, you will have issues. But if you JUST want the newest version out there then I would say go ahead and run a stock build, get it odexed (not deodexed) and you will have buttery smoothness

Hi, I am looking for ROM with better battery life than Stock.
My average battery drain about 1% for about 4-5 minutes while using Internet via WIFI for browsing using JB's 4.2.2 default browser, chatting via WhatsApp, reading emails and using Blink Feed.
How about using this ROM?

My main reason FOR rooting, was to theme the phone red. I have the HTC one Red edition. And just love red. I also hate blink feed. Ive flashed Venom rom, and desensed it. Battery life is amazing, I cant find anything that don't work, well nothing I need to use anyway. Plus they have there own red theme, and with the help of a few icon designes from Seriously Crazy. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091654 This is what ive come up with.
So worth rotting for me, if only for the theming, and gtting rid of blink feed.

I purchased the HTC one from a sprint store. It is the M7_wls hboot 1.44.00. I promptly rooted it by unlocking the bootloader with fastboot and installed TWRP and cyanogenmod 10, since I used and loved cyanogenmod7 for 3 years on my EVO before physical damage and processing inferiority finally made me throw in the towel. It was perfect. beautiful. best device and ROM combo I ever saw. The HTC one and cyanogen 10: a match made in heaven. But then, quite unexpectedly, after allowing the phone to die on a job site one day, it would not take a charge. The good news is that sprint will not attempt to open the phone and so no unrooting was necessary to replace it. In fact they did it there in the store since I was within fourteen days of the original purchase date. No removable battery! It was their contention, and I tend to agree, that it simply became unseated within the case, although I hadn't dropped it. fine. new phone. I once again unlocked the bootloader and installed TWRP and cyanogenmod 10. used it for a day (which was quite cold and humid, but I was inside primarily) and the audio stopped working. No music, no in-call audio. While frantically texting customers, I managed to download the nightly cyanogen update and flash it. My in-call audio came back, but ringtones, notifications, music, games and all other possible audio remained null.
I unrooted it by running the RUU in a virtual machine (I use a mac) and, even returned to stock, no sound. In-call audio remained (thank god). I took it in again and after the obligatory sea of clerical errors, sprint ordered me a new one. I really don't want to go through this again. I love the phone, but business is suffering. Is it possible that either of these issues were my fault? I've heard the inside of the M7 is quite convoluted and littered with coaxial cables like older HTCs and I did drop the second one twice. It had a nice case and simply slid out of the angled, inside breast pocket of my coat maybe three feet onto the floor each time. No such occurrence on the first. It makes sense what some are saying that the sound card simply became disconnected inside the case, but now I'm wondering if I'm mussing the root up somehow. My new phone will be here in a few days and I'm simply never going to use Sense 5. I'd rather eat discarded blowpops out of a sandbox. How can I make sure this doesn't happen again? Is it possible that these are both hardware defects and I'm the most unlucky customer ever? I see minimal cases of the latter issue occurring on the stock ROM, but it does happen. Usually it is fixable however. Mine was definitely not. Are these phones as unreliable as they have been for me? They seem to really impress even the picky crowd, so I'm thinking no. Help! Were these really both hardware issues, or did I mess them up?

I would unlock, root, and S-off your new device as soon as you get it, and try something different. CM10 is pretty outdated as it is, and even if you are hesitant to go to a newer version for fear of having a less stable experience, there are plenty of 10.2 ROMs that should be stable. Not only that, but there are numerous stock-based ROMs that will offer a great user experience with the ability to disable sense or remove it completely. RENOVATE is a great choice for that sort of experience. If you are looking to try something new, my latest build of Beanstalk is 4.4.2, CM based, and offers a lot of custom features not found in most other ROMs here at M7SPR. It does have some small bugs here and there, but nothing that impedes your ability to use it as a daily driver. Not pimping my own build, mind you, just offering options. So, give something new a try and hope for the best is my advice. Oh, and try harder not to drop the damn thing.

Thanks for the advice!:highfive: Out of curiosity, why do you say to get s-off instead of just HTCdev unlock? Also, I find alot of files that I assume are for the m7wls with m7spr in the title. I don't really not follow most of what people have posted about the different modes and titles, but I gather that as long as the ROM says m7 and is a CDMA version I'm good? I'm going to superglue this new one to my hand. not really. I need to be more careful though. never had a nice phone before. I would like one that has kitkat... I never had that phase of, "I hope I don't mess my phone up," with the EVO, but I like the one so much that I find I'm apprehensive about ROMs now. For the sake of calming my paranoia, what do you think the likelihood is that either of those issues had to do with CM10? It feels low to me since I unrooted and the problem persisted on the second one. Do you use your kitkat mod? I kinda do want kitkat and I'm such a fan of CM. admittedly partially because I like the color, but still. I like it. Where can I download?

Finally I have decided to move on from my beloved HTC Incredible S which has been my companion for more than 2 years now and I chose HTC One to be its successor (Yeah I am a HTC Fanboy so my obvious choice was HTC itself). But there are couple of questions that I would like to get answers to before I zero in on it.
1. If I get a HTC One Sense Version, is it easy to install the Google Edition ROM on it? because I love switching roms often and like Latest Updates on my phone just to experience it
2. How is the future of this handset? I am asking it because, my Incredible S had begun with GingerBread and now with awesome developers, I can install KitKat in it too Thats a whole long journey on it.. Just wanted to know if the hardware and processor is future proof because after spending wholesome money on it, I dont want it to get stuck at kitkat
I checked the forum and found that there are whole lot of ROMs available for HTC One and I am excited to go for it. So any guidance here would be wonderful

Oh the Google Edition will be supported max till 2 updates eh? Didnt know that..
Also, why I was asking because, even if official souce code was stopped by HTC.. Devs had developed kernels from scratch and kept the In credible S Alive.. I would love the same happening here..

Didn't say that. Said sense will be supported to either 4.5 or 5. Whichever comes first. I.e. one more big release.

BTW, There is an Indian Variant of HTC One.. One which has Dual Sim and seems like Single SIM HTC Ones have stopped for no reason :/
Will the custom Firmware of this Single Sim Ones work on that?? Or there is a separate forum for that?
