[Q] Anybody used progressive lenses like ... - Glass Q&A

Has anybody here tried using progressive lenses with Glass? I tried Glass over my progressives and it seemed fine, but of course wearing Glass over a separate pair of glasses is very ugly. When I got the prescription frames, I discovered they were apparently incompatible with progressive lenses (as well as bifocals), or at least that's what the local stores said. This greatly limits how convenient Glass is for me.
I recently saw the Wetley GGRX Adapter w/ Custom Multifocal Progressive Lenses for Google Glass advertised. Has anybody tried these? I am pretty squeamish about ordering expensive corrective lenses over the Internet and would welcome any feedback.

I got the Google Bold frames and had my progressive prescription put in them. They work extremely well. It was also a fun way to turn a $1500 purchase into a $2300 expense. But it's only money. If I didn't spend it on that I'd probably just waste it on food.

Thanks. I tried two local eyeglass chains and both said the "thin" Glass frames I have were incompatible with progressive lenses. Maybe the "bold" frames are different in that regard.

I have the split glass frames which aren't that different from the thin frames and it wasn't a problem at all. I did go to a doctor that was glass certified, not that I think that should make that much of a difference.

I went to two Glass approved optometrists and neither had an issue with a progressive in the thin frames.

Modding your Camera Lens

I'd like to say Thank You to everyone in this forum and providing such a great site for us. I am very admire all yours talent that I wish I have, but I don't. I did I a little mod to my Tilt camera lens and it came out good and I'd like to share it with you all. This mod require no drilling to original lens and look oem.
1. A piece of Micro Slice Glass. 20 cents
(used for microscope, you can get it from science store)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914039158/
2. Knife sharpening stone, fine gain.
3. Glass cutting tool $6
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914039484/
4. Qtip
5. Double side tape
Instruction:Sorry I don't know how to attach pictures into my post. Have to link it to Flickr. Hope you don't mind.
-To remove the lens, use a Qtip & push the lens out from the back side of the cover, use your figure nail to lift the lens out from the chrome frame.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2913195413/in/photostream/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914041602/in/photostream/
-Use the lens to mark the size onto the Micro Slice Glass and cutting it with the glass cutting tools, you may need to try a few time to have a straight cut. http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914039158/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914039484/
-Now you have the piece cut out, here the fun part. use a sharpening stone and work near the sink cause you need to wet the stone during the sanding.
while sanding the new lens, use the original lens to check the shape. I made my a bit bigger then the original so it can be fit in tight without using any glue. Double side tape used just for insurance purposes.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914080332/
-Here the final product.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914250782/
-That's it folks, this is the best and the cheapest and the oem look camera lens mod ever. Here some shots I took before and after. Let me know what you think. Pictures are in order, original lens->Moded Lens->no cover.
1.http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914040902/
2.http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2913194597/
3.http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914040044/
I will take some picture tomorrow for you to see. Time to sleep.
Those before and after pictures just show what a Mickey Mouse lens cover HTC has provided us with. How about a petition for a new back cover with a glass lens cover?
Top mod, gonna do this one.
BS...
Thanks for the heads up. Amazing how something so simple can improve the clarity of the camera so much.
What is a qtip?

The generic name would be a cotton swab.
Without cover is still better, and having done the mod many months ago, the dust problem is overblown.

I don't know how many kaisers are out in the market but a manufacturer in the far-east (due to cost) can make such back cover with integrated fixed lens in the cost of ~$0.10 (go for worst case 1$) each and I'm sure most of us are willing to pay... lets say $15 each ? so here is a win-win opportunity waiting for an entrepreneur.
I did a similar yet cheaper fix.
Pop out the stock lens.
Cut some plastic (used the package some RAM for my pc came in)
Use the double sided tape and place it there. It's not that noticable but the picture quality improves a great amount.
Great mod, just took my back cover off and the picture is much better. I'm going to try just removing the cover altogether.
Lol, this is so much nicer than my ghetto fix! I had just popped out the plastic lens cover (and succeeded in breaking the little chrome-painted piece in the process, of course) and put a little piece of extra screen protector over the actual lens to protect it from the dust and what not.
Gotta' try this!
my lil camera lens cracked so i removed it and it has been off for over a month. i dont really have issues with debris getting under the battery cover. besides, its not hard to remove the back and clean it with my shirt and put it back on
nice, I will have to try this
You really can notice the difference. I just quickly take the back cover off, take a photo and then put it back on. I really notice the difference now. Thanks heaps!!!!
Thanks for the info... from now on, when I want to take a picture, I'll remove the back cover
I was thinking of doing this mod but using glass designed for optics instead of standard glass. A quick web search found http://www.astraproducts.com/i_ptsheet.asp. Are there any photography experts out there who know if this type of glass work any better than standard glass?
Also, if someone (possibly myself) were to bulk purchase pieces of optical glass "pre-machined" to fit as a replacement to the tilt, would there be much interest in purchasing these? I suppose it would all depend on cost and I have no idea what the cost would be, but maybe worth looking into.
This is just my opinion, but I see no point in going through the trouble of modding a phone that was never really meant to be used primarily as a camera.
I think this makes even less sense when you take in to account the fact that it performs really bad in certain conditions.

My reason for the mod is because the lense on my back cover is cracked right down the middle so the camera hardly works at all. Replacement covers run $50-$60 so I'm looking for a less expensive fix. I don't really want to remove the lense entirely because of allowing dust into the case and also the actual camera lense would be exposed and liable to scratch.

I Need Different Lenses for my Glasses

Yes, I'm quite aware this is off-topic... even for off-topic xD, but in all glasses forums I've found online, there's just no activity going on -.-
I'm nearly 17, and I wear fairly high-prescription glasses. I hate the lenses. It is becoming nearly painful to look at things now!
Things are clear and sharp. No complaints there, I'm complaining about the type of lens! I'm forced to use the horrible polycarbonate lenses because I'm under 18? I want CR-39 (plastic) lenses because the visual quality is MUCH better. On poly lenses, on the edges, there's significant color distortion.
I requested plastic lenses and the lady was asking me why as if it was the most far-fetched thing she had ever heard, and I explained fairly clearly why I want them instead. Then she was all "Ok, but plastic lenses are gonna be about twice as thick" I stopped her there and said "Honestly, I could care less about that. I take pictures and view 2 fairly large computer screens for a good portion of my day, every day. I have a wide view area, and I'd appreciate no color distortion for the minute 'con' of being thicker. I really don't think anyone else will care either."
she had this look on her face like I had just explained to an iPhone fanatic how the Galaxy Nexus pwns it. And she finally says "Well... umm... our policy is that anyone under 18 HAS to have polycarbonate lenses because they're shatterproof."
It was so difficult to say "Oh... Thanks anyway...." but I did without even sounding rude -.-
she seriously wasted my time to hear me explain, only to tell me I have no choice? and what kind of bs reason is they're shatterproof? Who cares? Plastic isn't going to ruin my eyes when they break from an impact unless it's an impact that would cause it to break in a similar matter to glass. I don't play sports, so polycarbonate lenses makes no sense.
On top of it all, plastic lenses are MUCH cheaper. Better visual quality and cheaper.
What do I do? I've had these glasses for about a month now and had the lenses changed today because my prescription was off. what are my options? I can't do contacts because they're expensive and I have astigmatism. There must be something I can do.
If you're in the USA you could try Costco for contacts. They're loads cheaper there. I only buy 1 box of each prescription at a time, then use the lenses until they wear out. I take them out each night and clean them with a solution called Clear Care. If you want to go that route I recommend the AirOptix lenses. In the long run, it's been cheaper than glasses.

+1 on hating poly lenses. With mine, I get some color distortion, but what bugs me the most is they're blurry around the edges...I always have to look right at something for it to look clear.
Only good thing? They're practically indestructable.

I actually would get contacts, but I like the looks glasses give me and hate the extra effort required to use contacts. And I have astigmatism. I think the eyecare places only push poly lenses to minors because they costs 2x the price and have "incentive" from the companies to push them. Sickens me. :/
In the US, the glasses have to be shatterproof for legal reasons (If they break and you bust an eye, you could potentially sue the company who sold them to you). However, it might be possible if your parents accompany you and agree to sign a waiver stating that they accept full responsibility blahblahblah ....

Do they even have forums for eye glasses? Seriously!
Contact https://www.glassesuk.co.uk and see if they'll ship outside Europe or find someone to forward them on to you. Plastic lenses.
I feel your pain OP. All my life my lens prescription has been horrendous. I will never be able to get Rimless glasses, contact and custom lenses are almost $300 for me. Thankfully I have good insurance.

Have your eyes lasered, I did.
Now when I get angry I fire laser beams out my eyes.
The laser they used on me was a Japanese slit eye laser.
Only one of the above statements isn't true.

I'm one of those goofs who get's kinda mid-priced frames because I like the style glasses give me
I'm gonna attempt to find out if I can get a waiver or something stupid like that. I have asperger's syndrome and my mom thinks requiring cr-39 lenses might be a sensory thing..
Couldn't they treat me as special needs in this case or we could sue for not accommodating for my needs? Poly lenses give me headaches.
Hi, how high/strong is your Rx?
Instead of poly, try trivex or a high index plastic 1.60+.
Trivex is a mid index material, like poly. They both are thinner than CR-39. The big difference is that trivex is optically clear & has a high tinsel strength-which is on the opposite end of the spectrum of polycarbonate. At our shop, we highly recommend trivex to CR-39 and poly. Poly has the worse optical clarity ever-we try not to sell it at our shop.
High index is the thinnest you can go-recommended for high Rx.
Getting an anti-reflective coating should definitely help in terms of optical clarity. It cuts down on glare, reflections, and is also scratch resistant. This should have a warranty as well.
You might want to get the aspherical lens as it makes it thinner & not bulge out with a higher Rx.
These will cost more than poly obviously, but well worth it for what you are needing.
Oh one more thing, there's something called digital lens. What it is, is that a computer software is used to make the lens have better optical clarity from edge to edge- better than traditional lens. This might be something to look into as well.
Keep in mind that if you use your glasses for distant vision (-X.xx), the edges will always be thick with a high Rx.

I'm going in for yet another eyecheck tomorrow. What are some tips to make sure they test me right this time? I know this seems picky, but I don't want things in the distance to be the least bit blurry, it bothers me. How do I tell the optometrist "Can you just keep increasing strength until I decide the bottom row is crystal clear?" without sounding like a ****? What are the chances that they carry Trivex because I've been considering that, since my rx is kinda high (anything past half a foot is out of focus) and I fear that even if I did get CR-39, I don't mind lenses being thick (especially for optically superior lenses!), but I don't need glasses to magnify my eyes from the thickness lol.
What we'll do is I'll have my granny explain and explain myelf as well that I have Asperger's, and imperfections in vision do give me genuine headaches, and because of this, I cannot deal with polycarbonate - it makes my retinas feel like images are burned in from the color fringing... for lack of better explanation.
I'll go with Trivex if they offer it, but what if they don't? Then what should I do? These are my only glasses and they give me headaches. Ask to speak to their manager to agree on a waiver for CR39?
Than you.

im -5.00 in the left eye and -5.25 in the right eye (blind) but with my contacts in im 20/15 and i never have to tell my eye dr anything they always get it perfect. you may wanta try a new place. i dont wear glasses bc even when they give me the thinnest ones they are still coke bottles i get six pair of contacts and the exam for $100 only have to get the exam once a year, after that its only $50 for the six pair. oh yea and they always give me a pair so i dont have to open my new ones.
You could use the high index plastic-they are already aspheric I believe since your Rx is high. Trivex is impact resistant. They should be able to offer any of these to you with an added cost.
Trivex & high index plastic are indeed optically clearer than both Cr-39 & poly.
The material can make a difference, but if you believe it's the Rx, you should tell the optometrist to recheck your Rx- it's your right.
Make sure you are specific when you answer during the exam, miscommunication can give you a wrong Rx...

Higher index results in lower abbe number, resulting in more color fringing. Slightly better than polycarb (highest is 42 vs poly's 30) but I think if they deny me CR39, I'll probably just ask for aspherical Trivex. (does that exist?)
This time, I'm also gonna try not to be so quiet. I usually let them do most of the work with me communicating if something is better or worse, but obviously we need to go further than that. I'll have to communicate that I would like him to keep increasing power until ALL the letters are crystal clear, maybe hold my phone at a distance with some text, or have him open the door so I can see down the hall to the room that's usually empty (lul) whatever I have to say, though! I DO NOT want to go there again! Anyone have any tips as how to explain my "get it perfect or it's unacceptable" way of thinking? Another thing I'll do is I'll ask for a copy of my records, because, honestly, I don't Atlantic Eyecare and want to go elsewhere. Btw guys, my insurance only covers 2 year terms, not 1 year (makes me think of new every two lol)

Gear VR blurry?

Hey everyone,
I just got my Gear VR and I just finished setup. I have tried to adjust the focus on the headset but it seems no matter what I do it always has a bit of blur to it? Is this normal or should it be able to focus into a perfectly clear image? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

So playing around with it, I found that certain experiences like in tutorial just aren't very sharp.. The quality looks much better in other VR apps like Oculus Cinema.. Its still a little blurry but nothing terrible..

I have a screen protector and noticed the same thing . . . guess that is the culprit?
by screenprotector.. You mean plastic or tempered glass ?
I would say both. We might be introducing the blur because we are placing a additional layer of glass or plastic on top of the primary glass. Under normal conditions we do not see pixels right. But with Oculus Rift the ideal resolution is 16k! That's because we have the screens so close to our eyes and you're using lenses. I'm not sure if the lenses are used for magnification or if they allow us to refocus on the top layer of the screen. You might be seeing the bad quality of the protector first, then a possible inner layer of dirt or moisture followed by the actual screen. I always use the shower method to apply my protectors. Maybe there is still a layer of moisture trapped that the naked eye cannot see.
Please don't remove your expensive screen protectors and blame me if you still have a blurry effect. I do plan on removing mine because I have this nasty halo effect. That too can't be good for this application. Also make sure that all the plastic film protectors are removed. Seen this one unboxing and it appears that both sides of the lenses have those protectos applied.

Yes I have a spigen screen protector. It's extremely clear with no halo effect. Most people can't even tell it's on however as Chrisonxda said it's possible the additional layer is causing the blur as the image passes through.

Don’t have good news regarding screen protectors. Per the Gear VR operator’s manual page 6 of 61:
“Remove the mobile device screen protector to get clear visibility. “
Sadly I won’t be able to confirm with my own glass protector because when I went to order this morning Samsung was out of stock again. I should have ordered earlier but I was concerned with Verizon compatibility and I wanted to see more feedback from people.

Sadly I won’t be able to confirm with my own glass protector because when I went to order this morning Samsung was out of stock again. I should have ordered earlier but I was concerned with Verizon compatibility and I wanted to see more feedback from people.

I ripped my screen protector off. Didn't make a difference. Some of the content is just more blurry than others. But wow is the over all experience amazing. I brought mine into work. It is a pretty cynical crowd since I work for a video game company. Everyone who has tried has been floored.

I actually see this blur people are talking about and has nothing to do with the video. It's just a dirty lens. Whenever I get that smudge due to eye lashes etc, I just wipe it with the glass cloth and it's back to clear. I thought I had an issue with my eye or something lol.

ditto. i ran the Gear VR with two different Note 4s: one with and one without a screen protector (film type). they both looked the same in terms of clarity...besides the scratches on the unprotected one. lols. Samsung is probably thinking about those who have damaged screen protectors or those crazy rubber ones that have that orange peel effect. and maybe those tempered glass ones as well since they just add onto the phone which might cause difficulty in docking the phone to the headset.
I think I figured out the blur and why it's there somtime when I swear I didn't touch the lens. Fog. (I think the weather also affects this) It's defintely fogging up. When I take the headset off, I see the fog vaporize off the lens. So maybe I should apply some anti fog.. hmm
Mine fogs up too. I wonder if the anti-fog spray for glasses will work?
well technically the gear vr is mostly the same as the oculus dk2.
i have the dk2 at home so i can confirm that its allways somehow blur and not perfectly crisp. you have a "sweet spot" at the middle and the more you look at the sides the more blurry it gets...
this is how the optical lenses work now and will only get better with better hardware.
nethertheless dont get too much distracted by it...
for best results:
- adjust the right ipd and also try to find the optimal vertical alignment
- keep the screen and the lenses clean (hopefully the lenses are not as fragile as the dk2 lenses are)
gl and have fun! :highfive:
I put some anti fog spray I use on my hockey visor worked perfectly.

Is there an ipd adjustment on the gear vr?
In preperation before my Gear VR arrives, i already ordered anti fog spray and a rocket blaster for blowing away dust particles.
http://www.amazon.com/Giottos-AA190...&qid=1418732129&sr=8-1&keywords=rocket+blower
I have the same issue
I can get each eye clear, but it has to be so precise, it's on the verge of annoying. Maybe my head/eyes are shaped weird.

Finally Pulled The Trigger!

So after months of waiting, when it was released on Monday I couldn't help but feel hesitant about picking one up, lol I'm not sure if it was justifying the money for a piece of plastic or the idea of it coming out was more exciting than actually buying it, for me the main seller is the cinema, I'm a huge movie buff and watch movies a lot before bed on my Note 10.1 2014 or Note 4 (If too lazy to grab my tablet) so this is right up my ally, i hope. The other sell is the Harmonix music player, I'm hoping its included because I haven't heard anyone talk about it since launch, I'm hoping they just forgot and it doesn't mean that it sucks or isn't included, being able to lay back on the couch and basically meditate and vibe out with immersive visuals to my favorite music sounds pretty awesome. Lets hope. Honestly those reasons and the fact I specifically opted for the Note 4 over the Note Edge in anticipation for the VR kind of pushed the sale, Otherwise getting the Note 4 would have been in vain lol.
Honestly I'm pretty excited to get it now that its ordered, needless to say I sprang for the Next Day shipping from Samsung because of my hesitation to grab one early in the week, and I wanted to get it to play with over the weekend, so It SHOULD be sitting on my doorstep ready to rock when I get home from work tomorrow.
Questions to the people who already have one in their hands:
Any tips or tricks I should know before getting this tomorrow?
Any cool features I need to know about?
Is the included content easy to run through within a day and does any of it have playback value? (I.E. The ocean, concerts, Iceland etc.)
Loading your own Movies from SD, simple?
Overheating?
Battery Life?
Worth the money?
Gaming?
Current Content & Does it seem like future content will be coming pretty regular?
Is there a content store or just what's on the Included SD card?
Etc.
Any and all thoughts appreciated, I've been reading the threads people have posted who have already picked one up and it's helped me find some validation in grabbing one.
Thanks Guys, Pretty jazzed up due to the wait and the reviews I've been reading and watching, but nervous I just dipped into the savings (especially during the already expensive Christmas time) to buy a tchotchke lol I mean I'm no stranger to Early adopting, especially with Samsung but you never know what you are in for!
Again thanks for any help!
To be honest, I don't want to ruin the surprise for you. But i would save the gaming for last...
I just ordered a Gear VR as soon as I installed the Verizon VR update (wanted to wait for that to happen before ordering- this was quick for Verizon).

Lol I'm intrigued, do tell! What am i in for?
So that the picture isn't blurry you have to put the Gear VR up and down on your face till you find your sweet spot by adjusting it with the headstrap.
And don't forget to remove all plastic covers from the lenses, they are on the front and back of the lenses.

Thanks!
Use the Cinema first, it's probably the most impressive and intuitive mode.
Games haven't impressed me much.
I concur that moving it up and down on your face is probably the most important thing for clarity, which Samsung doesn't elaborate much in its manuals.
This is very important if it's pretty cold where you live. If the Gear VR is cold, it will fog up for the first few minutes of use due to it being heated up by the phone and your face. You will notice this because a small fog will form on the lens. What I do is lift the Gear VR off my face about an inch and just blow up into the glass. It will then defog. I have to do this a couple times initially until things warm up. And I'd recommend you watch the Gear VR Intro Video first. And Cinema is real cool with 3d movies / videos. Good luck!

That's weird... I did not have any plastic things on the front of my lenses (only had them on the lenses inside of the goggles) S: I had something on the tinted cover thing though? Hope no one played with my VR before delivering X_X
Anyways~
My VR starts getting warm after about an hour of normal use without the cover thing on I leave my cover off because I like walking around with the see through function :silly:

Ok i got my Gear VR today and i had the exact same thing as you, only had a plastic film on the lenses inside of the googles and was also worried if it was already used. But the rest looks pretty much unused.

It's probably nothing then XD This thing is so fun with my big ass headphones :silly: I feel like a cyborg when I walk around with it
Apparently if you have Titanium Backup or whatever you can use your phone like normal-ish(?)
And don't forget to wipe your phone's screen so no smudges if any XD

Getting my Gear VR by UPS later today and also wondering about this. I watched a few unboxing videos and saw that there is an adjustment for nearsightedness...a dial you turn at top center it looked like. But one of the people in the video wore glasses and said it was OK.
I did also see that there is apparently a risk of damaging the lenses in the Gear VR by wearing glasses so we should take care as we try. Let us know your experiences as you test it out.
i am taking into consideration buying, if it can be used ok with glasses and if i find a reasonable price in EUROPE.

Just tried it with glasses and it works fine! There's a bit more pressure on your nose, but it definitely is possible. Didn't notice a big difference between having my glasses and not having them, as I'm near sighted. :good:
It really depends on the glasses. My tiny wireframes work just barely, but neither of my thicker frames even come close.
I was hellbent on wearing my glasses for awhile, but I have gradually learned to go without. The extra pressure on them kept worrying me that they were going to end up getting bent.
If you are nearsighted you might try without glasses since the screen is quite close - it works better for me that way.
i got these types:
http://www.ray-ban.com/international/products/optics/RB8411
i will try them when i have the occasion, but in EUR i cannot find them neither in stores, nor online with 30 days money back guarantee.
Mine kinda pinched my nose bridge too hard and i think it looked the same without them
