Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk

Yea, Android is making it extremely hard with each release to root. Eventually, it's not even worth it
Sent from my SGNote 3

Yea that's for sure but that was what the biggest appeal to me I know we I could get elsewhere and be stuck with what they gave me but with Android it was open and could truly make it mine not just another same old phone that the person next to me has

Just my 2 cents..... I would highly recommend the HTC M8. I had the S5 for 3 days, took it back and got the M8 and LOVE IT! I have had a couple Samsung devices (S3, Tab 3) and was really looking forward to the S5, but the no-root/locked AT&T bootloader was a deal breaker for me.
Went with the HTC and have no regrets. Love the Sense 6 interface and you can customize anything, in terms of graphically. Have experienced zero lag, hiccups or any other glitches that are inherent with Touchwiz systems (typically).
The Note 3 is a nice device too, but rather big for my taste. The m8 is sleek and I like the metal body vs the plastic samsung has been using for the past couple years.
Again, just my input from someone who left my tried and true Samsung s3 (and briefly S5).

^^ Good post. However, the Note 3 still reigns supreme.
Sent from my SGNote 3

You could trade if the person is willing to add some cash to it as well. But personally i prefer the S5.

Not sure where the idea of Android being harder to root comes from. Google is removing holes in the firmware but with unlockable bootloaders rooting is easy. It's Samsung and their obsession with locking and encrypting their bootloaders that make it hard. I have A Sony Z ultra and it was fairly easy to root of you are willing to lose your warranty. Same with the M8 anything but Verizon.

Unfortunately it's at&t & other carriers that requested the locked bootloader. They're really going after corporate customers hence the added security. T-Mo knows they don't really have a shot at the big accounts & therefore don't care about the bootloader.
Root is really what matters to me but it's a lot riskier without nandroid backups. I'm still using my T-Mo Note 3 for that reason. My S5 is a Samsung sponsored demo but if I could, I would trade it for a T-Mo version. Almost feels like a waste of time transferring everything & giving up root when I'll have the Note 4 in a few months.

You do realize that the main reason for this ATT only situation is that ATT locks down the boatloader?
The S5 certainly has root and many custom ROMs available if you start out with a S5 sold by another carrier. One pragmatic solution is to buy your S5 elsewhere e.g. TMB and have it unlocked. Then you can use it on ATT complete with a rooted, custom ROM.

[Q] Galaxy SII or Galaxy Note?

Yo!
So, i'm looking for a new phone to buy but i can't decide between the Galaxy SII (the white one which IMO looks hawt) and the Galaxy Note.
I can't decide if i want a 5,3" screen or 4,3". I know, it's stupid not to go for the 5,3" screen, but i'm not sure on size of the device itself.
What whould you buy? (Btw, is the Note's bootloader open/crackable?)
(Mods, i know i'm in the wrong area with this post, but i want to check what my homies here @ Off-topic think)
Either way your getting an absolute f******g beast of a device....
Not sure if the note would be just that little bit too big for a phone but I havent handled one so I can't really comment...
The white one looks putrid though (jm2c)
Yeah i know! But i've tested the Galaxy S WiFi 5" and it's huge, and the Note is even bigger BUT it's way way thinner, so.. i don't know! But.. but.. just LOOK at that screen!
I've got the S2 and absolutely love it, but I would (after a try) probably swap for a Note if I could, so I voted for that.
Either way mate, like Conan said you're getting a BEAST! Get one of each and then give me the one you decide not to keep
Even tho i think the note is WAY WAY WAY TOO BIG!!!
I voted for it as it is faster
Hmm, looks like the Note will be my new device! The only thing i'll have to do now is to wait...
It's not released here yet.. Booo!

i'd have gone for a Galaxy Note, if they made it for the Tmo USA AWS 1700/2100 network
Yup, i'm super into the Note now after reading Engadget's review and watching a lot of YouTube videos. I must have it! Come to papa!
Either is great but the Note has a Pentile screen so some say white looks green especially whe magnified (Best iimage I can currently find) But either choice is awesome
(Also below only shows a SGS1,)

Because we are talking about a Super AMOLED display and not a Super AMOLED Plus, the display is based on a so-called PenTile pixel structure, where pixels share subpixels. A PenTile OLED panel was recently introduced with the Samsung Galaxy Note, and we were not impressed. In real world PenTile means loss of details and sharpness, as well as a bluish/greenish tint around letters (depending on the background color). See how it looked on the Galaxy Note in the picture below.

Actually, yes it can. Don't know if you've tried to hold it, but if you have "normal" man hands it'll work fine. I can do most things with one hand except writing on the keyboard.
And remember that the Note is only 9mm thick, so it slides easily into the pocket

Who will make my next phone?

Hey all.
Basically i just want to hear all your thoughts on your current devices, and what you think of the next device in that product family.
My thoughts.
My first android device was the Motorola defy which really sold android for me, the fact i could treat a phone horribly by accident and it not care was a really solid selling point. The developer community for it was really quite strong too, it even receiving CM10 before my current S2.
The original transformer isn't the prettiest, lightest and fastest tablet anymore (not that it was ever lightest SO MUCH GLASS) but it was and is my first tablet and still works amazingly today. Good job Asus.
My current phone is the Samsung Galaxy S 2 which i bought outright after everyone that had one giving raving reviews and a quick view of the forum showed a very active community. Little did i know the issues the developers faced to get the aosp roms working properly, it is not pretty and it is entirely the fault of Samsung and their hardware partners (I am looking at you, yamaha). I know this and love the developers for supporting my S2 so well, especially codeworkx whom has been moving devices lately.
I love the idea of getting the S3, but i would only be going for the larger screen and if all i want is the larger screen why not go even larger and get the Note 2? Especially after its drop test video. It is a tank of a phone.
The One X+ Kind of interests me with unlocked bootloaders etc. But the fact i have to flash the kernel separately to the ROM every time (or at least that is my understanding) would really annoy me.
After the defy i would rush to a unlocked bootloader on a Motorola. That and screen size were the only issues i had with my defy.
But my current plan runs out in December which is only a few months away and i would love some ideas on devices coming into Christmas season.
Currently i am thinking Note 2, but i don't want to have half baked aosp roms because of hardware support. Ideas?
And yes doing a BYO 6 month plan with my local carrier is an option.
How bout this one?

HTC 100% of the time.
There are some really cool devs and contributors who have written apps and scripts that enable you to flash everything all at once, kernel included.

I have the SGSIII and the One X. In the case of the One X (not the One X+ but it's basically a refresh of the One X) yes, you do have to extract and flash the boot.img via your pc using fastboot and the flash the modules via recovery...not as bad as it sounds. It's a great phone.
The SGSIII not only has a bigger screen but a higher resolution than the SGSII. There are many ROMs for it and in the case of the US variants I've flashed ROMs made for the AT&T variant on my T-Mobile one. (The international version also has great development.)

Hey Tommy thanks for the reply, i take it your experience is from the EVO?
Thanks Babydoll one of my friends has the one x which i rooted/cm10ed for him the other day, it was an interesting look into HTC custom roms and i must say it is not overly difficult or anything. And i did see the scripts Tommy was talking about, they would be nice in easing the transition. How do you find the one x build quality? I heard it was hit and miss between users.

I see that only the Galaxy S4 and Note 3 are listed for Galaxy gear support for phone. When 4.3 comes to the note 2 any idea if the Galaxy Gear will be supported? Maybe someone will be able to create a custom firmware with this if not?

AT&T may get it in October, but you won't, at least not officially.
Just b/c the Note 2 will support Gear, doesn't mean the Note 2 will get 4.3. They could just roll out an app through the Samsung app store to make it compatible.

They NEVER officially said. There were plenty of unofficial reports of skipping 4.2 to 4.3, but nothing from Samsung.
No mystery, just don't want people to be surprised if it doesn't come soon if at all. Samsung wants to sell the Note 3, holding the 4.3 update back on the Note 2 makes sense. They could just cook up an app to make it compatible to Gear.
Look at the Galaxy S3 and S4 by comparison. The S4 released, the S3 sailed along with 4.0/4.1.

When it comes to updates, it's not just a matter of which phone but also which carrier. For example, I can guarantee you that Verizon will be dead last to introduce the update. Also, don't expect your Note 2 after the update to function like S4/N3. Samsung is not stupid enough to give away freebies for your old phone; they want you to buy a new phone model now.

wishful thinking? or do you have additional info to support it?
In theory, once it's released and rooted - it will support everything lol!!! But considering a hefty price tag I don't think it might get as much attention from developers community. Remember Sony? It got VERY popular once LiveView was available for $20 brand new on ebay and original SmartWatch was down to $99.
Price price price?

I think it should be illegal, they are infringing on owners of their phones. Not to their software and at their will. I made the sad sad mistake of picking up an unlocked att s5 and I'm on T-Mobile service since att phones work and I had an s3 running on 5.0.2 for months and loved it so I got this phone with intentions of running a custom ROM because that is what android is all about and after purchasing the hardware I should legally be able to use any software I'd like, not the previous service provider. Does that sound unreasonable?
Depends on the agreement made when buying the phone. Its all very on the second hand market because I'm not sure what the original contract states ... I would not be surprised to find very restrictive verbiage in the AT&T contract, whether enforceable or not.
The true solution is to look to the vendors selling open devices from the beginning and stay with them. Unfortunately this will almost always rule out true leading hardware devices as the prime carriers will lock them up.

So utterly bummed out upon the discovery of this issue with the Galaxy S7 being locked down like Fort Knox. AT&T Offered to hook us up and give my wife and I the "buy one get one free" on the S7 and S7 Edge without adding a new line ( which was the requirement to get the free one) since we've been long-time customers. It was the last day of the promotion and we really needed new phones so we jumped on the offer... My heart sank when I hopped onto this forum hoping to find an easy root method and saw how frustrated everyone has been over trying to accomplish doing anything with the US version.... *sighs*

You picked a good time. There's a guy that posted in the AT&T Root bounty thread last night with his Skype ID saying he'd achieved root. I was doubtful and messaged him on Skype and he presented me with his evidence. I posted it to the forums, and went to bed. Woke up, and since then he's helped another user achieve root and Chainfire has offered his help on SuperSU if needed. It's looking brighter for us AT&T S7 Edge users!
Sweeeeeet! That is great news!
Check the S7 thread. Root had been achieved!
