How do you use your Gear and what did you miss? Devs Tizen or Android? - Samsung Galaxy Gear

Hi guys,
i'm just interested in how do you guys use your gear and which features you guys miss. i would suggest that all of you put it in a Format like i'll Show you. So it's easier for devs and maybe Samsung to overview this thread statistically. Maybe some of them will get inspired. who knows....
(sorry for the formatting of the text. but i have to use Internet Explorer and it automatically fixes it in a bad way. but i do not really care...sorry about that. )
Reason why i bought my Galaxy Gear
I thought my note 3 is too big for pulling it out that often just to know which time it is. Plus the uneccessary times when nothing important beeped like a new thread or a uploaded YouTube video. I thought it would be handy to have again a good looking watch for using my phone less.
Cause we all know how often we pull it out to check the time and begin to senseless checking here, replying there...For me this worked. Plus i thought it would be pure awesomeness to control music with this.
How do your needs changed or which features you began to miss when you had it quite a time?
-Seeing and changing wifi state, mobile data and maybe more but that 2 are most important to me.
-Broswing through the Music library of the currently used musicplayer. Missing this one was the most dissapointing thing to me.
-I had moments where it would have been very good when i could have used the camera a a silent security camera without time limitations and keeping the Screen black. So the thief won't recognize that he got on tape. This would be good to for uneccessary Police violence too.
- i would like to read all incoming Messages with a Speed Reader app like spritz.
-General Spritz like speedreading Integration
-Better capability of short replys from the gear to Facebook Messenger and apps like that.
-Ofcourse Google Now Integration instead of useless S-Voice...
- Clockfonts! MOAR JUST MOAAARRR or direct font using Integration...oooor zooper on tizen....xD
Android or Tizen?
After using Tizen a few days i say i am surpised about Tizen. Ofcourse there are no apps not even a calculator. But the System is more responsive and the Batterylife actually is much better for my usage. On Saturday at 17:30 o'clock it was charged to 100% now it's at 15...Before it lasts a day. Batterylife is more than tripled for me. Plus the voice recognition for taking photos is there. I missed that.
I am hoping that it will be possible to convert android apps for tizen and that it will last not that long till this day Comes. Cause the batterylife and the better response of the system are good arguments to me for having Tizen on a featurewatch like this. Yes you read right. For me this is a Feature watch. It isn't smart at all imo.
But as soon as i am familiar with Tasker i am instantly back on Android at this state to workout the missing stuff... Android APK compatibility is a huge Thing for pushing Tizens usability an acceptance Forward imo.
I am a Developer an my thoughts About "Android or Tizen" are:
Especially your guys opinion is interesting to me.
I am a Developer and got inspired to (currently) work(ing) on
Do not Forget to mention if it is for Tizen or Android if it isn't already obvious.
Would you buy it again or do you regret?
I would buy it again. Cause in first place it was what i expected. I do not really Need 2 Smartphones i only want to do not pull out my phone so often a day. But not browsing through Music is a pain in the ass to me...i paid 200 Bucks. i think this was a ok Price. Look around what normal watches can you can pay much much for for just seeing the time. If the battery wasnt that small it is totally OK to me.
Now it's your turn ladies guys and devs.
If you do not want to answer all of that just take the ones you want and make it fat.
sorry for my english
cheers

i purchased mine after the gear two came out, specifically because i prefer android, and i was excited to try out the null rom - i installed null rom within hours of getting it in the mail. i initially had CARBONROM (aosp based) running on my s3, and i had to jump through some hoops to get it to work at all, even with a custom rom on it, and it spurred me to switch back to touchwiz (i also got a note 8.0 around the same time).
initially i just played with it all day, like killing it immediately (there's a good amount of novelty to having a fully functional computer on your wrist), then i started just using it as it was meant to be used, to check notifications and what not. ive just managed to get offline voice recognition working, as well as the google now launcher, and autovoice with google search api - i've only just gotten into tasker because, although i didn't find it too useful for just a phone, for the phone/gear combo i think a lot of cool stuff is possible.
so yeah, in a nutshell, android all day. with regular use, my battery lasts plenty long - i don't understand why anyone has a problem with one day, i have to plug all my other stuff in at night anyways, and i have outlets, chargers and cables to spare, so... i just plug it in at night. a day is fine.

Waze a free turn by turn

Over all this look like the most promising turn by turn nav app. The best part is it is free on the market. What do you guys think about it?
This app is terrible IMO
I thought it was a nice app. Nothing amazing though.
If you want a nice turn by turn, I would recommend the Sprint Navigation app off of the Hero dump.
I don't use the turn by turn as much, but I think the concept of the social commuting is a novel idea. I do run the program when driving and report traffic delays and police. I usually clear the running apps before starting Waze and it runs fairly smooth. just my .02.
The biggest issue I ever had with Waze is that fact that you can almost watch the battery level go down when you run it. It's one of the few apps that drain juice so quickly that my phone won't charge using my car charger when it's running.
Cool idea when it wants to work, but I get better success with sprint nav
The client seems quite stable now. Anybody here with a few weeks of experience? (Preferably in an area with bad coverage).
How well does it do, without user interaction, in creating the road network? (as shown in http://world.waze.com/guided_tour/ => "Behind the Scene")
I tried it for a few days but could not resist fixing the errors on my own since I wanted to have my most important route functional to test how well it gives voice directions. I did not manage to do much driving on other routes yet. As far as I have seen, driving a road two or three times is not enough for the automatic routines, i.e. it still has many gaps. Will it actually work (fixing all gaps, creating intersections, etc.) if I drive it like 10 times or more? Or will I rather end up having 3 parallel roads (due to GPS inaccuracy) if I limit my contribution to activate "record new roads" when I drive incomplete routes?
I hope there are users with waze-experience here. I could of course ask in the waze forums but I think that here at XDA is the better place to get an accurate (=non fanboy) response.
to be honest, i just downloaded this app today. i hate and love it so much. It is extremely useful, but it seems like nobody in my city uses the app so the directions it gives me are horrible. It's VERY laggy and kills the battery so fast. But I can't resist it because I want to try to see if it actually starts to improve if I stick with it. Sucks that I bought a Garmin the other day too lol. I'm running a rooted 1.5 CLIQ (which is why I just got tired of waiting on google maps navigation)

7 days with CyanogenMod 7

This is work in progress and I will update it for 7 days. Original posting can be found here
I'm sure you have heard someone telling you would spend way too much time with your smart phone. As if one could spend time with or without a tool. My phone, besides some rare occasions, is always with or near me. Yet it doesn't mean I spend time with it! I spend time with people, and I might spend my time spending time with using my smart phone to write an email. An if I spend time adjusting it to my needs or the latest desire aroused reading some blogs, so what? I do this for the sake of communication!
How come nobody understands that find difference in concept?
Day 1
25/05/2011, 11 a.m.:
Been checking my emails on the go twice, surfing on xda forum, chatting with the HTC support, writing an email to a friend, again checking my mails but also the market updates - what a pain to see there are no updates available for my installed apps. I check if it is not Sunday. No it’s not Sunday!
I discover how handy Evernotes can be. Copied an address out of the chat conversation and send it straight off to Evernotes. Must admit it was a little fight until I had marked the exact text line I wanted to have copied as it did not recognize it on its own. It would have blown me away had it read my thoughts.
I’m really thinking about one of those tables all the time. I’m kind of pissed somehow about the unfortunate fact there is no real handwriting recognition function on phones or tablets yet that really works - would be mind-blowing! I read the HTC Flyer does make advanced use of the stylus pen for note-taking somehow. I’ve seen some handwritten notes and compared them to the scribbling I am producing this very moment on real paper and there doesn’t seem to be that much of a difference.
However, I will have to type that later and I question this concept of me thoroughly doing it without giving up after a couple of minutes.
I’ve had way too many thoughts die due to the lack of an adequate and effective tool to digitalize my thoughts. I’m way much more impressed by my analogue brain-eye-arm-paper-to-key motion sequence I’ve happily produced as I realize I have really typed and added almost everything I wanted to say.
25/05/2011, 5.51 p.m.:
I wonder if I should give cyanogen latest night builds #87 a try again and get rid of my perfectly working Android Revolution ROM setup. I’m downloading, charging and backing up my phone for every eventuality...
Day 2
26/05/2011, 5.33 a.m.:
I have CyanogenMod Nightly Build #87 setup & running. Will see how it gets through the day. Fingers crossed the battery will not drain exaustingly.
26/05/2011,5.45p.m.:
In the mood for taking some screenshots and willing to do a brief review of my cyanogenmod 7 experiences...
Day 4
28/05/20011, 7.55.a.m.:
Can't hardly believe I haven't changed that much. Phone is working pretty fine, except there seems to be a problem between Fullscreen Caller ID and the call recorder that came with the modified kernel I flashed yesterday. I just won't use FSCI, instead, when I make a phone call it will try to use both the default dialer as well as the full screen dialer as the same time. The result is devastating: it will dial the number twice.
Day 6
30/05/2011, 1.53 p.m.:
Left home at 7.30 pm, battery went down to 51% by 12 a.m. and 32% by 2 p.m., whilst all I did were a few twitter & google mail updates, no phone calls, watching videos or other heavy-consuming processes.
Seems like the un-official CM7 nightly ROM I have flashed (Chezbell-cm7-20110529) is a battery killer! SetCPU is enabled, with a powersave governor profile activated when display is off, undervolted –25mA script running and I am nevertheless more than half-way out of battery within not even 7 hours – not really a full working-day yet!
Feeling unhappy and unsatisfied, after that the phone had been running so smoothly during the weekends ( some heavy 3G and EDGE-surfing in bad reception areas, gps navigation etc etc without a problem and far less battery drain). Phone was way more responsive with CM7 #87. Will switch to LORDmodUE 2.1 kernel tonight and see if it helps.
Day 7
31/05/2011, 3.13 p.m.:
I did it! I ruined it all! My sd card is totally erased! Holy frigging s’#!§t! What happened I still can’t recall exactly but I guess in any case I should learn to be more careful and most important: read and think before I act! I flashed a kernel while surfing the xda on my way home and now I don’t even find that stupid thread.
I guess it is a good point to stop my documentation now and draw my conclusions of my 7 days with cyanogenmod nightlies now.
Admins: please delete this thread. I've posted it to HTC DesireHD thread as I think it is more suitable...

Galaxy Gear, and why I'm selling after five days.

I've been using the Gear with a Note 3, running on 4.3 MJ6 firmware.
I've uninstalled tons of bloat of my phone. I don't use the stock email program, I use the apk from the nexus 5 which works great.
Here's my problems with the Gear.
Weather would not work. That's fine, I can live without that.
I could not play multimedia audio through the watch, again fine, I can live without that.
The killer problem for me appears to be the multiple notifications. I've only got one email account set up to produce notifications. When an email arrives to this account, the notification is sent to the watch multiple times.
I've tried various Gear Manager 1.6 APK's in my quest to fix this basic but serious fault including the one directly from Samsung Apps. I've also tried the 1.7 version downloaded from the thread here. It seems as though the only "fix" is having no lock screen security at all and dismissing the notification via "view on phone". Obviously this is unacceptable to me.
I also use a Sony SBH52 Bluetooth handset, This manages to handle it correctly.
If anyone has a fix for this, please let me know, otherwise it's on eBay at a very low start price.
There's no problem with playing audio on mine.
Weather works too.
Gmail and other 3rd party notifications all work.
Of all the phones you could have had, you have the best one for this watch. Somehow thru indiscriminate debloating, you've managed to turn it into an unsupported phone like nexus.

The debloating is not an issue. Like I said, I can live without weather, and it playing media. All I want is one notification per email, not 3, 4 or 7.
My Sony SBH52 can manage that, regardless of my debloating.
For sure all the notifications including gmail works. And I don't get duplicated notifications. If anything, it may miss one or two because the service on the phone stopped sending them.
Does your svoice work from the gear?
It's great for sending sms.
Also, does your lock screen (pin, password, pattern, etc) autolock when the gear is near?
You could be missing some of the dependencies required for Gear Manager to function properly.
There's a reason why installing Gear Manager on phones other than Samsung's phones, don't work...
---------- Post added at 11:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:44 PM ----------
Samsung's software is full of dependencies, it's written such that, it's either functions their way or the highway.
Well if you decide to sell let me know

I use the Gear with a Platronics Voyager Legend headset and a SGN3 with a Zerolemon 10000mah battery and case.
So far I have been very happy with the way the phablet, watch and headset seamlessly link - no issues whatsoever. My only gripe is with Gmail and the inability to block individuals from email you.
In the past I have had HTC devices and within a matter of a few months I have rooted and debloated these devices installing a thin ROM for speed and battery life. I have so far decided not to root and debloat the SGN3 - firstly my main reason for doing so is the battery life is no longer an issue with the Zerolemon and even with the samsung battery it's not bad at all. Secondly, this is the first Samsung phone I have had and so far I have no issues with the software, yes the SGN3 carries a lot of superfluous stuff but just like my Alienware Laptop, which also carries a load of bloat and rubbish I don't use, its not an issue due to the relative power of the phone compared to the current stock of apps. I can see a point in a couple of years when I may well root and debloat but only when apps reach such a greedy level that new hardware is beckoning. as said above, the interconnectivoty of Samsung stock software means that for all to work properly, removing one part, like svoice for instance, can have a huge impact on the usefulness and reliability of things like headsets and gears. Personal choice I suppose but IIWU I would reinstall the stock rom and give it another chance.. It's an expensive bit of kit not to get the full functionality out of when, unless you are using the SGN3 to remotely control a nuclear reactor, chopping and modding the phone drastically is likely to result in a package that won't give you decent return on investment. Just an observation, it's personal choice at the end of the day.

Pretty much the same setup as you plus i run a chromebook and chromecast. I find the headset, watch, chromecast and handset work seamlessly together. I recently got the SGN3 and decided to keep stock on it after my S4 which has had every rom on (which i finished with 4.4.2 kitkat google stock rom).
I can pause and skip tracks that are being casted from my phone, on my watch, that alone makes me happy.
Im actually quite enjoying the stock samsung experience. There are a few minor annoyances, but that is mainly due to licencing (netflix, tap and pay etc)
For blocking individuals from emailing you, you can set up a filter in the Gmail web app on your computer. If you just want to delete their messages, you can set them to delete automatically. If you just don't want to see their emails right away, you can set them to 'skip inbox' and go to a label (kind of like a folder) and just read it when you have time.

[Q] Gear1 to Tizen or Not?

I have a Galaxy Gear (1st gen) and it's still on Android.
Curious if I should stay on Android or move to the Tizen update?
I don't really plan to do much tinkering or hacking, but don't see much on rolling it back to Android if I don't like Tizen so thought I'd ask first.
TIA!
~poz
I updated mine and think its much better. I dont tinker much with the watch (i do with my phone) and generally just use the watch for its intended purpose.
Ive seen a thread with a working rollback to android. Although i think it takes abit of luck to make it work. Dont plan on rolling back though as i dont see the need.
I would suggest the update but thats just my opinion
Like maskerwsk said. If you're not tinkering with it then I think Tizen is the way to go. I upgraded shortly after I got mine. The battery life is better. I hear the performance is better but I can't vouch for that, I didn't play with android enough. The app support is much better and the launcher is visually more appealing, if that sort of thing is important to you. I like to check out the available stock options and then I cant resist the urge to mess with it. I have successfully downgraded back to android with out to much trouble. I have a custom recovery installed. The next step is to get Null loaded on it. If you intend to use it for it's intended purpose then you probably wont regret upgrading to Tizen.
Going back to android is easy, follow the thread and it's fine. I used tizen for the most part and everything worked fine for me using it on an lg g3 however I wasn't able to get gear manager working when I updated to lollipop on my g3 so back to null for me.
Null, when you set the cpu up properly easily last a full day, could probably get 2 days out of it if I don't play with it a lot. It's really a toss up. Try both and see what fits you better, or if non Samsung and lollipop, right now your only real option is android and with that no reason not to run null.
What's the video recording time limit on Tizen?
I get 3 days of battery on my Gear now because it's only for notification and occasional camera use.
Performance is much better than Android. And no side loading either!

15 seconds.
I love to tinker so it's null all the way for me! I look at tizen and I think no: zooper, tasker, popup widget, gmd gesture control etc etc etc it's my device and I enjoy seeing how far I can push it and also workaround things that frustrate me like not being able to reply to a notification on whatsapp. But it's each to their own. I hope you enjoy your device whatever path you choose to take
It's a much better device on Tizen, with one critical exception, at least for me: the battery drain is horrible. On Android, I could still be in the low 90% range at the end of the day. On Tizen, it drains at an average rate of 7% an hour. Worse if I'm really active with it (video recording, etc.). It died mid-afternoon last week. I've reset the Gear and reinstalled Gear Manager, but no joy. I'd go back to Android but I like Tizen a lot more -- save for the drain.
Edit: This fix -- downgrading to the previous version of Gear Manager -- seems to have fixed the battery issue for me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-gear/help/battery-dying-12-hours-t2887770.

Some possible problems and concerns about my new Note 5

Hello there,
I recently got a Note 5 and I am coming from a iphone 5s. This is my first android device ever and I am trying to get used to it. Thus, I noticed a few things that bothered me a little bit. When I scroll down faster than usual in apps like facebook, shaman, play store, whatsapp emoji menu etc. I get a laggy/jittery behaviour. Some people mentioned browsing as well but I think samsung browser seems decent, I feel no lag after it completely loads the page. I dont wanna believe that this device cant handle even Facebook app, maybe its a network related problem (I am sitting on a 10-25mb internet depending on where I am). I feel an extremely small stutter when I switch between menus for the first time in simple apps like dialer. I just pop it, for example when I first go to contacts and favourites, it kinda stutters for an extremely short time. I am aware such concerns might sound stupid but I am really not sure how it is supposed to be. Next, I am getting about 5-6 hours of SOT battery life. Location is on (wifi and cellular), android device manager is off, NFC off, wifi is always on where I dont have to use mobile data. I noticed that android system is draining the highest amount just after Screen. Usage was mostly Whatsapp, some facebook, phone settings (since I am trying to figure out stuff), a little bit of gaming and twitch. Brightness is auto and at about %30. I also got a geekbench score of Single Core: 1450ish and Multi Core: 4500ish.
Finally, I wonder if these concerns are expected and possible to solve. I did some reading but unfortunately never had chance to come across to a clarifying explanations to all these things. I thank you in advance for your time taken and effort reading this.

Being an ios and android user, what i can say is android can never(as of now) be as smooth as IOS. This is the truth as android is made to support all the variety of devices, however android users get more customisability more useful free apps and more control over the device they own. 5-6 hours of SOT is considered not bad, it really depends on personal usage i think it is acceptable, i guess the ability to see what your phone is using may be a good or bad thing. For what you know maybe on IOS the system actually drains as much or even more than android just that we are unable to view. hahaha :highfive: cheers not looking for flammers just my two cents.
Thanks for the input =) Hopefully this will be solved with a software update later. Still some confirmation/consultancy will be much appreciated, cheers
