No Screen Mode? Any apps to improve color? - Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2, 10.1, 8.4 Themes and Apps

On my Note 3 there is a Screen Mode setting which allows you to choose between Dynamic, Standard, Photo and Movie. No such thing seems to exist on my 8.4 Pro. Would like whites whiter and blacks blacker - much same as raising contrast and dropping gamma.
Any solution here? An app maybe to adjust color?
Thanks.

I don't have the 8.4, but on my 10.1, it's in Settings-Device-Display-Screen Mode. Any chance it's there on yours?

That's what is so weird. I have owned multiple Samsung phones and tablets and the Screen Mode option is always there. But on my 8.4 there is nothing. So so so odd. Can anyone else with an 8.4 confirm?

Again freaking weird. Why only on this device? Is there an app which will give us some control over gamma? I'd like to make text a little blacker. I know that the Nexus has a great app for that.

Any sort of gamma or color control would require heavy kernel changes. Unfortunately there's not a lot of kernel development going on with this device. It's a pity this is such an underrated tablet.

Yes it is a pity. I have always wondered why Android seems to keep gamma settings under lock and key as if we are not to be trusted with them. In windows 8.1 you can adjust gamma all you like, one reason my laptop looks so great. If I could just turn down the gamma a few notches on this my blacks could be every bit as dark as AMOLED.
Damn you Google and your strange ways.

That answers my question. I have it on all of my samsung phones. Why the hell is it not available on this so called "PRO" version ...

Is this because it doesn't have a AMOLED screen? Or the other tablets pro do have this option?

It seems to be a regional thing rather than a amoled/lcd thing. The original reviews of the pro 8.4 made comment to being able to alter the colours (American reviews).
I personally used this mod (for the S4) to install the X-reality engine,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2358133
for me this worked very well, removing the excess saturation on the Reds and overall balancing the colours. I tried the Bravia 2 engine (port) and found only a very slight change. The Bravia 2 plus the X-reality engines dulled the image too much, so in the end settled for the X-reality engine only. I hope this helps...

[Q] Milestone: limited color display abilities?

Lately I've noticed that my Milestone has some problems with displaying colors.
I have attached the screenshot of my home, where you can see terrible transitions between similar hues.
lso, there is wallpaper file attached, which seems to be okay to me.
Is it common with those screens or it's just my Milestone?
my milestone does the same :/ could it be that it does not have 16 million colors?
24 bit images on a 16 bit display will cause the banding you see.

i find it weird that no reviews mentions this or even the specifications sheet, :/ the desire has an 24 bit display?
That's what I thought, pretty much.
Still, it being not mentioned is strange, as it seems to be fairly serious issue. Unless it's possible to convert images with no quality loss visible on the screen.
The proper term is dither, in cyanogen you can enable surface dithering in cyanogen mod settings > performance which should improve image quality at the cost of performance. Not sure about other roms.

im curious to know about the display used in the droid 2 and droid x, the htc desire, are they using a 24 bit display now?
The Droid/Milestone does have a 24-bit display: http://www.displaymate.com/Motorola_Droid_ShootOut.htm
In fact, the Droid 2 uses the same LCD.
That gradient problem with your image is probably caused by several problems:
1. The picture is not a true 24-bit image.
2. Google's Gallery is limited to 16-bit!
The Milestone/Droid has one of the finest LCDs on the market, and if it had not been so expensive when it was first released in Canada ($600!), I would have bought it in a heartbeat, despite the locked bootloader.
EDIT: I've just examined the photo on my 24-bit Aquos, and it looks perfectly smooth, so the problem is being caused by Android 2.1. FroYo's Gallery is also limited to 16-bit.
So what gallery could I use to put wallpapers on?
Flikie does pretty much the same, as it uses Froyo gallery.
Well, it seems that application named Wallpaper Set and Save (find it in market, it's free) is the easy way out.
This app lets you set the 24-bit wallpaper keeping the desired quality, more or less.
Though, it may make Launcher Pro FC a couple of times right after setting the new wallpaper, then it works flawlessly.

Yeah, I agree. Apparently, Samsung's Galaxy S Gallery is a bit better. Not truly 24-bit, but the Galaxy S adds improved dithering. The Galaxy S, with all of the hype about SAMOLED, is not even a real 24-bit display You Milestone/Droid/Droid 2 folks have the best Android screen, IMO.

what about the heat issue (i'm normal user -internet, facebook, camera, music- ) and glass crack

As stated here, no cooling fans etc, high cpu speed packed into small bundle, very limited to disipate the heat generated. No phone is not going to head up significantly when under load, the more Cores and GHz the more heat
Hey guys I also upgraded to Xperia z from the note 2 (went for the looks, ignoring the inside cooks)...
and I also made the dealer apply a screenguard on that phone straightaway...
But the picture quality of the phone seems to be a little bad than note 2....
I compared both the phones having same pic on both the phones but note 2 seems to have sharper images....
Do I have a problem with my phone or is it like this originally.?

I got you perfectly.
Turn off Bravia engine and see what you think, I feel it affected the sharpness, I came from an S3 and think the display on the XZ is incredibly sharp.
As for the "dull" colours, it's probably because the SuperAMOLED screens in the GN2 and the S3 were very saturated compared to the LCD in the XZ, personally though, I always used my S3 in "Standard" display mode which removed much of the saturation and I'm a lot happier with the more realistic colours of the XZ.
The camera on the other hand is a different story, and I find it difficult to get photos that come close to what I could take on my S3, too much post processing I presume on the XZ, and they don't do a very good job of it.

Take into consideration the resolution of the image you are testing. This is a full hd screen so it needs full hd images to compare or it will just stretch them causing blurred.

Does this issue show up in a screenshot? Perhaps there is some strange graphical issue with your device.

[MOD][PORT] Sony BRAVIA Engine 3

Sony BRAVIA Engine 3 Ported To The Galaxy Note II
The Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine 3 is a video enhancement program for Sony phones. It uses filters and algorithms to create a clearer and more contrasted picture and an overall smoother experience. This is perfect for the Note II's huge HD screen but can be a little to saturated for people like photographers who want to see how the photo looks exactly with out any enhancements. The change is not huge but is definitely noticeable if two devices are compared. This program is very light weight and works with all models of the Note II so far.
While the latest BRAVIA ENGINE 3 builds on tried and tested BRAVIA ENGINE technology, it does so with the advantage of a new picture processing software.
This new technology has allowed BRAVIA ENGINE to improve - even in respect to its own dazzling performance:
Contrast. Increased depth and clarity, as well as new light control technology to control peak brightness levels, means stunning images even on the brightest of scenes.
Colours. New colour histogram technology detects and optimises overall colour distribution of each frame. This technology delivers breathtaking colour by making millions of improvements to each frame before you even see it.
Detail. Advanced Noise Reduction lies behind BRAVIA’s ability to show you every blade of grass on a football pitch and really put you at the heart of the action.

Only Chuck Norris can judge me

What screen mode are you using?

As with previous Samsung devices you can choose between various display modes, some are more accurate than others and different people prefer different look. Which mode are you running?
Adaptive display- Far too saturated colors, white point is too high(blue)
AMOLED Cinema- less saturated than Adaptive display but white point is still too high
AMOLED Photo- colors are slightly too saturated, white point is pretty good(right around 6.5k).
Basic- This is suppose to be the most accurate mode according to display mate but the UI and icons look washed out(perhaps because the UI colors were designed with very high saturation in mind?) . This mode is great for photos and videos though.
Update - I've started using basic mode. It took much longer than expected to get use to it but once I did I won't look back.
I'm using cinema as I think it looks the best
I personally always go for the most technically accurate, which is funny cause it's called basic mode lol.
I just use adaptive. Then it aaaaaaaaaadapts. Which is fine. Basic is too washed out for me. Maybe Ill do a week basic and see if it grows on me, though.

I don't think adaptive display does a great job at adapting lol at least not from what I have seen....I've compared Note 4s side by side at work and adaptive doesn't really seem to adapt at all regardless of the type of media that is being displayed, still looks far to saturated and the white point is too high. Some people like that though which is why it's set to that by default.

I though the same thing as well, at first. Cinema mode looked more like my Galaxy S4 which I was use to. I decided to give photo mode a go though since its significantly more accurate and it grew on me after a few hours. It takes a while for your eyes and brain to readjust.
Yeah I think I'll try out basic for a while and see if it grows on me.
I've just switched to basic. I used the equivalent of it on my Galaxy Tab 7.7 which also had an amoled display and I soon got used to the correct colours. Every time the phone rebooted it would start in the default before switching and you could see just how over saturated the colours are.

Yeah, same here. After using the stock color mode for years, it took me a while to get used to the accurate colors. But once I did, I could see the difference in how over saturated the colors were on stock mode. But it's definitely a preference, some people like the colors to pop.
Oversaturated colors are the best thing about AMOLED in my opinion.
Still using basic here. HAHAHAHA. But planning to try Cinema soon
I use adapted display. Don't care how accuracy color is Basic, it just wash out to me.
Cinema is crazy saturation.
Photo mode a bit yellowish, too warm.
I like cinemas cool color as photo is too warm for my tastes. I never use adaptive and basic looks off to me.

Do you think adaptative display, for obvius reasons, consumes more battery than the others?
I use photo for now because I like the high saturation that comes with it (it's not that high anyway since I use it dimmed back a bit).

color calibration?

I saw someone who did a really indepth color calibration for his Nexus 6, i cannot find the thread anywhere...help?
(note: I am color blind, so calibrating the colors to be perfect for normal eyes helps me out more than you can ever imagine)
(note 2: no, the color blind options do not help me out, my eyes are abnormally color blind, and i am used to not compensating for it, so the compensation screws me up worse)
It's in the lean kernel thread. Do not know how to add the link from the XDA app. For a cooler/more blue screen, its 237,235,255
for anyone else who is looking here is the link

No I haven't done a direct comparison with the Note 4. I don't have or want that phone so I have no need to compare them.
Do you mind taking some pics/vids before and after from default to cooler?
I wrote a wall of text after but I'm on my phone and somehow it got lost :/
Anyways basically I wanted to say that it might help more people who are on the fence about this display and it may shed some light on the positives of the screen vs the other flagship competitor the Note 4.
Ive searched all over the web and I've yet to see anything comparing the different settings.

I have both. Note 4 all the way, looks nicer than nexus 6 and more premium. The screen is way brighter than nexus 6 and no one can deny that and sharper. If the time goes back 1 month would never by a nexus 6. Also don't get me wrong nexus is a good device overall you just need some sort of work around to get it how you want it. Note 4 is good out of the box.

But if you tweak it, doesn't it look much better and is it slightly on par with the Note 4? I know the brightness is low on the N6 but as long as it's a little brighter than my Note 2 I'm OK with that. And they both have the same resolution, is that why the Note 4 is sharper because of its smaller display?
I really like everything about the Nexus 6 but the Note 4s display blew me away.
Is the only way to change the color settings via a custom kernel? I'm happy with stock kernel, but would live to tweak my colors a bit. Thanks

You already decide what you are going to get Go with the Note 4.

Thanks for the answer.
I hope this is not heresy, but after playing with a few different kernels on my N5, for me it just became a)an obsession and b)a hassle. However, I did like the tools to do the display color changes. I will wait for the CM official rom or maybe play with one of the kernels available. It would be nice to have the stock kernel with only the color capabilities, but I suppose if you mod a kernel, you might as well put in additional features. And yeah I know its easy enough to flash a custom kernel and go back to stock, just my laziness.

No I haven't done a direct comparison with the Note 4. I don't have or want that phone so I have no need to compare them.

Does the Nexus 6 still have that slight pink hue on the whites after setting it to a cooler 7400k?

Pre-calibrated gallery viewer
There's a new app "Calibrated Photo Viewer" on Play Store which is a gallery viewer with pre-calibrated color and gamma corrections for the Nexus 6. Both sRGB and Adobe RGB color spaces are supported.
Here's the link
