[Q] Wife pried the back off, internal components damaged, much sorrow. - Moto X Q&A

So my wife was home alone when her new Moto X arrived. She read somewhere on the AT&T site that she needed a number off the battery, so - being used to her old Galaxy SII - she proceeded to pry off the back case. Obviously it came off all at once and tore a good amount of stuff off with it, and now I'm home early from work looking at a bit of a mess.
I'm a layman, but I can see that the following components are damaged:
Volume rocker / power button ribbon torn at the power button side
Antennae torn off completely (ribbon cable intact), square grey segments left behind on the battery
Camera ribbon detached from circuit board but seems to be intact
Random black tape torn off
Needless to say, with a busted phone, void warranty, and wife in tears... I need some help from XDA. What are my options? Repair it myself? Take it to a shop? Call it a loss and buy a Nexus off-contract? We don't have any upgrades left and can't really afford to buy a new smartphone at full price.
I uploaded photos of the damage to imgur, but I guess I don't have enough posts to supply the link. I uploaded them as attachments, hope that works.

Was what she read from the site from a att employee?

No, she found a YouTube video for disassembling a Moto... G.
Something about knowing enough to be dangerous.
Anyway, I got on the phone with Motorola support and (shockingly?) they're replacing the phone at no cost. Even paying for return shipping. Go Motorola!
This thread can be locked now, sorry for the disturbance.

You're probably gonna have to pay for a repair. Warranty is more than likely void. They will obviously know the back was taken off.
Sorry!

Just read post above me. Lol
How awesome of Motorola. ?
Tell her not to do it again....or I'm sure they're not helping again. Lol

Bricked/Broken Thrill? Get a Nitro HD Through AT&T FREE

I recently turned my LG Thrill in to AT&T's insurance claims service, and they apparently don't make the Thrill anymore, so they are sending the Nitro HD at no additional cost! Just the deductible, and then you get a new and better phone (at least in my opinion) just putting all of this out there just in case anyone wanted to take advantage of this!

Or you can hassle an get the s3.
I told them I wouldn't extend my contract unless I got to choose my own phone. They tried offering me the one x but I wouldn't take it.
I've also been a customer for 10 years so I have a little more room to argue.

How did you get them to go along with that
I just got a thrill in the mail today to replace the broken one I had.....What did you have to say to them???? I hate this phone just because of the ghost call issue and I am done with it.

I was about to scream that you turned down a quad-core phone for a dual, and then remembered that there's not a single quad-core in the US consumer market as of now. I really wish the carriers would take the hint from their European divisions/brethren and open the market already. I'm happy with my Thrill, not broken (we'll see if that changes) and I'm not even with AT&T anymore sooo yeah.

I actually got the S3. I know its only a dual core, but I honesty dont need a quad. The lack of removable battery or expandable memory on the one x was a killer for me. But now I'm stuck with AT&T for another two years

Isn't the dual core Snapdragon S4 faster than all quad core processors on phones (Tegra 3, Exynos 4412) thus far? WHy would you want the quad cores given they provide less performance and consume more power while doing so?
Well I got them to see things my way .......They are sending me a Galaxy S II Skyrocket.....and they told me to keep my thrill............zero charge plus they are sending it to me over night at no cost also..........I am a happy with ATT..............WHOA did I just say that???????

You are technically correct, it does get a bit better on the numbers, however the quads, when overclocked just a little still beat out the dual-cores, and can be OC'd a little bit further due to application load being distributed to more cores (higher fault tolerance at higher clock speeds).

Would you possibly be willing to donate that Thrill to me so that I can see about restoring it and in turn donating it to a developer here such as Lestat? Or donating it directly to Lestat himself since you get to keep it anyways?

No It has already been sold for 200 bucks and I am buying a google tab with the cash. I have already tried to give Dark another Thrill that I have here that has a broken screen and it would only cost 45 bucks to replace and he didnt want it. Dark has an SGS II now I think he is about as done with the thrill as the rest of us are.

You can't say that he likely wouldn't have wanted it, they were 2 completely different phones. One was a thrill with a BROKEN SCREEN, the other with no physical issues that required detailed and meticulous repair (of which there is no guarantee of success). I already have plans to donate my Thrill when I upgrade to a dev here on the forums. Already way ahead of you, already got the dev selected and they already said yes to receiving my Thrill. Don't think that I'm *****ing for no reason, ever. I intended to get the dev a Thrill a lot sooner than "sometime in the next six months," and have been ACTIVELY trying to either get one for free by getting somebody to donate, and I have even TRIED to purchase a used Thrill (multiple times) for this dev to work on, and been turned down because the seller wanted money sooner than later. So even though I was looking for it for free to donate to a developer sooner than my time schedule, I am still willing to SPEND MONEY on a dev here in the forums to "help the cause" as you say. My phone is "sometime in the next six months" because it's my ONLY GSM phone right now and I can't get the one I want until I save a little bit first.
I'm glad you can work on the delicate intricacies that are the internals of a phone without doing serious damage, you obviously have done it before successfully as the last phone I tried working on ended up becoming junk when trying to just replace a screen like you. Yes, I speculate a little bit on the difficulty level with a thrill, but that's based on my own past experiences with trying similar surgery, on a bigger phone.
if you guys could give me the number you are calling that would be awesome, I would like to try my luck for a One X. What were you guys complaining about when you called? ghost calls or a bricked phone?

LG thrill replacement
Well After talking to ATT after seeing this post. She is positive she can only send me an ATT lg thrill that i thought they didnt make anymore. i was hoping for an LG nitro to get out from under this mess of a phone. she did upgrade me to 2 day shipping but says she can only send the thrill.
My question for you guys is does it just show her the thrill on her screen and when it gets to logistics they will find they dont have it and send me the nitro or am i getting the same phone?
Thanks

White screen replacement on black model?

Has anyone gotten a white screen replacement on their black model? I need a new screen because one part of my screen is unresponsive and I'm out of warranty. I'm planning on buying a new phone later (hopefully nexus 6) but for now I've decided id like to fix my g2 and keep it for a while longer now that I saw its getting lollipop.
So I was wondering does the white screen fit same as black? I'm kinda bored of. The black and since I need a new screen I thought I might as well get a white one. Please only respond if your 100% sure because I don't want to buy it and take apart my phone only to find it doesn't fit the same (which I don't see why it shouldn't but just v want to make sure)
After I may also order a new back cover in white since they're only like 10-20 dollars and just remodel my whole phone
The back cover I have now is adjudged and scratched so I might as well.
Thanks!

Bump. Anyone? I guess I'll just grab a black one just to be safe and just get a white back to get a nice contrast like the nexus 5

That's what I was thinking too but just wanted to make sure because the materials are slightly different. I'll just send an email over to lg and see if they can give me any useful info.
And does anyone know a good video to follow for replacing a screen? I've never done it with a g2 and it looks pretty complicated when I looked one up. Is there no way to do it without removing the whole mother board and buttons and everything? The guy looked like he was ripping things off so I'm worried about following that video. If anyone knows a reliable one please link it thanks

I repair phones for a living.
Swapping the colors will not matter, they all fit the same.
Order the assembly (glass and LCD) part by your G2's model number, as the ribbon cable connectors are different sizes varied by model numbers.

Great thanks. And do you have any advice? I used to work at a cell phone store but only for a year and the only phone I've fixed was an iPhone because they're relatively easy to do and there lots of guides. For g2 I found only one video for vs980 and it seems really complicated. Should I just take it to someone. who does this for a living? I wanted to do that in the first place but they v wanted to charge me 175 dollars. to fix when I can get a brand new screen for as low as 50-75 dollars so I think the extra 100 is a bit much considering a g2 can easily be bought for 200-300 dollars

The video link I posted should help.
Basically they are all the same internally except for different cable connector sizes. All the repair steps are the same.
Watch the video and if it looks like something you don't feel confident doing, I'd definitely recommend taking it somewhere to get repaired.
My shop does take mail-in repairs and we charge $100 flat for G2 screen repairs. Let that be an option too if you feel you must have it repaired. Of course waiting on shipping and all that sucks but you'd likely save a chunk.
But yeah, definitely have someone repair it IF you don't feel confident... you don't want to mess it up beyond repair.

Thanks for the offer but I don't think I'll be able to do a mail in since currently this is the only phone I have. It's really not a bad repair. If you decide to do it, just follow directions and take your time on it. In my opinion, the hardest part of repairing a G2 is getting the plastic back off. Lol.

[Q] I got a 50$ N6 but need advise

Ok, So, I found this girl on my local face book and she sold me a Nexus 6 that has a shattered screen for 50$ I couldn't pass up the deal and I did contact Motorola who said that they would replace the screen for 175$ So, I am getting a great deal. The kicker is that I have no clue if it is reported stolen or what. She let me come to her house and assured me it wasn't and that she just didn't have the money to pay the 175$ for the insurance. Anyways, what do you guys think? should I send it in to Motorola? Can they keep the phone if there is something shady going on with it? It is from T Mobile from what she said. But I didn't get anything but the phone. I do have some sign of life. I just plugged it in and a green light came on up top but I have no screen action. The screen is shattered but the rest of it is in excellent condition.
As of now I have the One Plus One and I am debating on which phone is the keeper if everything does work out with it. Is there anyone else coming from the OPO who has an opinion of the 2 phones?
Any advise on my situation is highly appreciated!
Motorola won't keep it, they're not the mobile phone police.
With that said, who is this idiot girl? Why on earth would she sell a $650 phone, even with a crack screen for $50?
That's sounds shady if you ask me. Check the IMEI online and see if it might be black listed. If nothing cones out its at least worth fixing because that's a steal.
---------- Post added at 10:11 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:10 AM ----------
Also T-Mobile will black list phones if they aren't gift l bought out right and the account holder doesn't pay for it.
Even with a crack screen and bad IMEI number it's still worth more then the $50 he paid for it.

I don't know why she would do it but I do know a good deal when I see it. LOL! The digitizer isn't working so there is no way for me to get an IMEI # unless I open the back? I hate to invest in the new screen and it be blacklisted. Does anyone know if the IMEI # is located in the device if I took the back cover off? I don't know of another way to check unless I go ahead and fork over the $ for the new screen.

I just ran through a teardown of the N6, and it doesn't appear as if there are any stickers on the inside that would list the IMEI on the inside of the device. It would seem that the only way to know for sure would be to take the gamble on having the screen fixed.
Personally I'd get it repaired and take the gamble. It is very suspicious that she didn't give you the included box, if she did buy it what good would she have by keeping the box?
$50 is not that bad and the repair cost isn't too bad either. Take the gamble and see what happens.

Repair it because its worth the risk. Worst case she senario you will need a new imei but we aren't allow to discuss pushing new imei numbers to black listed phones on XDA but a quick google search could help you should you need it.

I believe you can find the IMEI on the SIM card tray. She should have provided the payment receipt so you could prove it wasn't stolen.

Well, Great news so far. I checked the IMEI # from the tray and it came back legit. So, I am winning so far! Thanks for all of the advise from everyone.
Now, I need to decide if I want to keep the Nexus over my OPO. I love my OPO but have been having an itchy finger to get the N6...We shall see!
Thanks again everyone!
DUDE!!! I have to share this...I called Motorola and told them that I got the phone from someone who didn't want to pay the insurance to fix it. They ran the IMEI # and I pre paid 175$ on a credit card and they sent me a new nexus 6 in the box with everything! Unopened!!! All I have to do is send the old phone back within a few days and I have just gotten a new N6 for 225$!!!Ya baby!!!
I couldn't honestly decide on what phone to keep between the Oneplus one and the N6 so I posted both on Craigslist and I said the first one that sold is the one I will get rid of and keep the other. Within 15 minutes of my post someone bought my One plus 1. So, fate has it that I have an N6! Now time to get this puppy flashed and dialed in. Thanks again !

I came from a OnePlus One, you won't regret it. Yeah the N6 is more wide but you'll get used to it, once you use the N6 you'll wonder why every other phone wasn't wide to begin with. OnePlus One does have better battery life but thats not to say that the N6 can't survive a full day without charging.
But congratulations, nice to see Motorola's customer service is quite nice.

Yes sir! I remember you! You helped me in the very beginning when I first got my opo. I was stuck and you helped pull me out of a bind. Good man, good man.
Well, I am loving the N6 so far. I have had the N5 so this is going to be fun. Time to start digging in and seeing what this puppy can do.
I had the OnePlus One and loved it but the N6 is better

My N6 is rooted and I'm running the Franco kernel for better battery life but once it's replaced the 4K AMOLED screen alone is a big difference.

Yeah your name sounds pretty familiar. I missed the Nexus community and it felt more true to "AOSP" as OPO ROMs/kernels heavily relied upon CM as they had a number of device specific code/commits.
I'm glad you're enjoying the device, a lot of N5 -> OPO -> N6 converts. I probably will skip on the OnePlus Two (or whatever its called).
I made my own custom ROM if you wanted to give it a try, if not then no bad feelings

T-Mobile Replacement process

I'm new to t-mo, and I'm gonna need a replacement (i'm just not getting the same battery life as others, regardless of what rom \ kernel combo i use final step is replacement).
How is the process?
how's the quality of the replacement units?
Is anyone using a replacement unit?
Edit: Would like your input ASAP as i'm possibly ordering the replacement today
(former Verizon customer, where CLNR (certified like new replacements aka refurbished) were trash and expected to fail as soon as humanly possible)
The replacement process is fairly painless.
Just call 611 and don't tell them you are rooted.
Odin to stock. Factory reset for good measure.
They send you a new phone and you send in the old one. You usually get an extra back cover and battery out of the process.
I never have received a refurbished unit, but others may have.

Thank you for your advice sir.
Kind of doing this out of not finding any other solutions to my battery woes.
Def gonna do this, they are charging me a 5$ warranty fee? (never experienced such with verizon)
Have you tried a different battery?
You might just have a bad battery.
I'm on firekat v10, and my battery life has never been better on any device.

Haven't tried a different battery. I have done spin test and tested it via multimeter and all came out well.
Got a couple replacements. All were "refurbs" but they were pretty much new with all the plastics unpeeled. I didnt have a battery issue, so standard shipped is just the unit without battery, cover, stylus. I just use what I had on original and send my old unit back in the same box. It was painless and I didnt have to sacrifice my phone first, just waited for the replacement to come in.
The downside to the replacements that come with no extra cushioning, the Note has moveable parts in the camera since its got an optical stabilizer. Got 2 duds that where I had to slap the phone in order to focus (apparently a common problem). So on the 3rd replacement, it was all good. I'm still a happy camper, as long as it didnt cost me, I was good.

I actually rooted and rom-ed all of them. LOL! But I odined back to stock before sending it back. Still triggered knox, but oh well...
just flash a stock looking rom like firekat and send it back; Tmobile couldnt care less if you are rooted or tripped knox
I got a replacement Note 4 from T mobile a month or so after the Note 4 was released. The phone did not come with a back cover nor anything else. Although it appeared new, it still had the factory screen saver on as well as the side bezel covers. There was an app that tests for refurbishment which indicated my unit was new. Not that it matters as I sent it back and kept my original one.
As I was not a jump customer they wanted to charge me quiete a few for postage ( I think $20 ) and processing, and it also took a week. They tried to sell me jump, by saying if I had jump it would have only cost me $5 and that I'd get priority mail 3 days. I dont buy into that rheteric, that also is not very Uncarrier of them - my opinion.
I dont rate their replacement program at all, only because they dont offer centers whereby you could walk in and get it swapped out like ATT. As well as them charging a premium to swap a defective phone.
And as for madmike23 not paying for replacement I guess he got that fee waived. Like I did. But like I said they charge for this service.

What is replacing the device gonna do in this instance .....sigh this is why rates go up and up every year.....stop comparing yourself to others and worry about you. Get a new battery, two even it's removable. You could have poor coverage so battery drain or app running in background etc your usage isn't the same as the nexts, and I hope they deny your claim.
I was gonna say something else and it slipped my mind but I digress

Got mine replaced about 3 months after getting it due to my screen cracking. I received a new replacement not refurbished along with new battery, wall charger with adapter, headphone, battery cover and new sim card. I originally had a White Note 4 and because they didn't have any White ones in stock they sent me a Titanium/Gray color one. I paid $175 for the replacement so I called of course to complain and was given a $30 credit towards my account, so I really only paid $145 fore the new replacement which ain't bad if you ask me.

I never heard of ATT allowing a direct swap in store unless you're within the return period.

And who said T-Mobile will replace or replaces phones? The only way that ever happens is if you're still within the return policy timeframe which I believe is 14 days from date of purchase.

My coverage is fine, I don't live in the boonies.
Actually rooting doesn't affect battery life, this is completely unfounded, and to entertain your thoughtless theory sir, i already went back to stock and tested it there too, same exact results.
I'm not claiming a phone insurance claim, WARRANTY, as i wrote.

Samsung sends T-Mobile returned re manufactured phones to use for in-warranty replacement options . Same process as verizon and all carriers as this is a industry agreement.

ATT has stores specifically for device replacement. Well they did two years ago when I was with them.

Warranty Replacement

I just processed an advanced replacement request through Motorola for my Nexus 6 with display uniformity issues. Just wondered for anyone that has received a replacement from Motorola, how was the replacement? I assume they're all refurbished phones. Has anyone had issues with the replacement like screen burn in or other issues upon receipt? Thanks!
I had two replacements come in last month, one which I am letting someone else use. Mine is working great. The other phone started having battery issues a few days ago.... The phone will shut off with no warning at random percentages all day long. 15%, 68%, 98%, etc. So, it looks like it's going to have to be RMAed.
I got my replacement today. Looks brand new. The screen is good, no burn in at all. November 2015 build date. Thumbs up so far Motorola.
Just sent one nexus 6 in for broken wireless charging and got a different phone sent back as a replacement with wireless charging also not working. Should I just give up everything seems good other than the wireless charging issues? I have so many wireless chargers it's sad to have to plug it in every time. Has anyone ever gotten a refurb back from Moto Care and had wireless charging working? I think they either stopped adding the coil or stopped hooking them back up when refurbishing them.
I had a replacement from Google which was a refurbished phone and it looked to me like a factory new one. Perfect.

Yea mine all look good, but did wireless charging work?
Yes, everything was perfect. I remember watching a Youtube review of the N6 by the tech god Marques Brownlee and one of the things that he mentioned was that even on his review model he couldn't get wireless charging to work. Maybe the N6 is a bit fussy about the type of wireless charger you use? I've been using a ChoeTech one for 18 months and it works fine - I occasionally have to re-centre the N6 to get it to pick up the charge, but once it's in the right place it charges perfectly overnight.
You probably got a new one back then, I'm talking about right now at the 2 year mark. I have 7 different wireless chargers, all work fine with my note 5. I think the refurbs at this point are the issue or I'm just extremely unlucky right now. Google and Motorola are two different companies. Motorola probably took out the part to save $1.
I just tested the replacement i just received and wireless charging doesn't work! WTF Motorola?

I think XDA should do a front page story asking people that have refurbished nexus 6 to check wireless charging and then we all make some noise at Motorola. I'm 45 minutes into a call with a supervisor and he is trying to transfer me to a level 2 tech! WTF I told him this is crazy and he just sent me over anyways.

For God sakes, I tried chatting with them and they kept trying to tell me to call accessories support saying wireless chargers are an accessory. I may just take the back off an fix this myself.

LOL, I am still on hold. They better not charge me for this replacement. I received the perfect device display wise too. I don't use wireless charging that much but it's really bugs me that it's broke.
I'm half tempted to open this sucker up to verify if there is a coil there at all.
